Lake sturgeon bring science to life and expand understanding of Native American culture.

The Little Traverse Bay Band in northern Michigan created a program with lake sturgeon designed to engage students in science curriculums while also teaching them more about Native American lifeways. Brooke Groff, a science teacher at Pellston High School, was the first to raise a sturgeon in school. Eight years and three tanks later, her students have released over a dozen healthy lake sturgeon.
