NOW HOW LUCKY CAN A QUILTER BE TO HAVE HER OWN SPACIOUS SEWING STUDIO INSIDE HER HOME?
IT TOOK 8 MONTHS TO REBUILD THIS 1930S LAKE HOUSE, BUT WHAT FUN!
TO PUT COLOR ON WALLS, TO DECORATE AROUND PILES OF QUILTS, TO CONSIDER VISITING GRANDCHILDREN, AND TO PLAN AN EXCITING SERIES FOR YOUR VIEWING AND LEARNING.
ANOTHER PART OF EACH SHOW IS ON THE ROAD.
YES, THE QUILT SHOP ROAD.
WITH THE HELP OF THIS QUILTER'S TRAVEL COMPANION, AND OF COURSE MANY SUGGESTIONS FROM FRIENDS, WE VISIT QUILT SHOPS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
WHILE WE START ON THE EAST COAST AND GO ALL THE WAY TO CALIFORNIA, OREGON, AND WASHINGTON, MANY TEACHERS WILL SHARE THEIR LESSONS WITH US AS WE VISIT THESE SHOPS.
NOW LAP QUILTING LIVES ON.
ON THIS SERIES, YOU WILL LEARN SOME NEW LAP QUILTED IDEAS.
BLOCKS THAT HAVE BEEN PUT TOGETHER WITH STRIPES ON THE BACK.
ROW LAP QUILTING CONNECTED WITH CURVES ON THE BACK SIDE.
OLD-FASHIONED QUILTS DONE IN ROWS.
THE BACK OF EACH OF THESE QUILTS BECOMES AS INTERESTING AS THE FRONT.
SO YOU HAVE A 2-FOR-1 QUILT ARRANGEMENT.
SOMETIMES WHOLE QUILT TOPS ARE ASSEMBLED, BUT YOU CAN STILL QUILT THEM IN YOUR LAP WITHOUT A LARGE FRAME, BUT MAYBE A SUPPORTED LAP HOOP.
OUR FIRST STOP ON THE SERIES WILL BE CAPE COD, HENCE OUR FIRST QUILT.
IT'S CALLED COAST TO COAST SEASHELLS.
I HOPE YOU CAN SEE ALL THE SEASHELLS THAT ALTERNATE WITH WAVE CIRCLES IN EVERY OTHER BLOCK.
20 BLOCKS THAT ARE QUILTED IN YOUR LAP AND THEN ASSEMBLED ONE ROW AT A TIME.
NOW I FOUND IT EASIER TO GET TWO ROWS DONE THAN ANOTHER TWO.
YOU CAN EVEN SEE MY NEEDLE RIGHT HERE AS I FINISH ATTACHING THE SASHING TO THE QUILT TOP.
THE SASHING REMAINS LOOSE UNTIL THE MACHINE STITCHING ANCHORS THE ROWS TOGETHER.
I'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU FOUR STEPS IN MAKING THIS QUILT.
BEFORE STEP ONE, WE NEED PATTERNS.
THE ENTIRE QUILT IS BASED ON AN 18-INCH SQUARE THAT HAS A WAVE DESIGN ON ALL FOUR SIDES.
NOW I WENT AHEAD AND INCLUDED THE QUARTER INCH ON ALL FOUR SIDES, AND YOU CAN SEE THAT WHEN I FOLDED THAT QUARTER INCH BACK AND THEN FOLD, YOU GET THAT NICE CORNER DIAGONAL MITERED FOR ALL THE CORNERS.
I GO AHEAD AND PRESS THAT ON THE BACK SIDE OF MY FABRIC.
NOW THIS MEANS THAT THE TWO RIGHT SIDES ARE ALIGNED, AND ONCE THAT IS PRESSED IN PLACE, I'M THEN READY TO CUT OUT.
NOW, BY THE WAY, I USE THIS PATTERN FOR ALL 20 BLOCKS, AND YOU CAN SEE I HAVE A FEW TEARS IN THIS.
I'M GOING TO PATCH THIS UP WITH MASKING TAPE RATHER THAN SCOTCH TAPE, BECAUSE MASKING TAPE WILL TAKE AN IRON.
BUT FOR THE SHOW, I'VE DONE A NICE NEW PATTERN FOR YOU THAT'S BEEN PRESSED IN PLACE, AND YOU CAN EITHER USE YOUR SCISSORS OR IF YOU USE THE ROTARY CUTTER AND YOUR NICE RULERS, GO AHEAD AND MOVE THE RULER WITH YOUR ROTARY CUTTER AT THE SAME TIME, AND YOU'LL FIND THAT THAT WORKS VERY WELL.
THE NEXT STEP THAT I MADE IS DUAL.
IN OTHER WORDS, I PRESSED TWO PIECES TOGETHER, AND THAT GIVES ME NICE STABILITY, AND I CAN REUSE IT MANY TIMES.
I'VE MARKED A DIAGONAL, AND I HAVE A CENTER LINE.
SO WE'VE DONE STEP ONE.
WE'VE CUT OUT THE TOP AND THE BACKING, AND I'M THEN GOING TO PRESS THE TWO DIAGONALS.
NOW IN ORDER TO DO THAT, I NEEDED TO PUT THIS PARTICULAR TEMPLATE IN PLACE, MARK MY CENTER, AND EACH CORNER.
THAT ALLOWS ME TO GET THAT DIAGONAL PRESS AND THAT CENTER MARK.
MY NEXT STEP IS TO CUT OUT A BATTING, WHICH IS 18-INCH SQUARE, AND I CAN SIMPLY USE THIS TEMPLATE AGAIN.
STEP TWO IS TO APPLY THE STENCIL DESIGN.
NOW I HAD LOTS OF FUN DESIGNING 10 SEASHELL OR NAUTICAL MOTIFS.
OF COURSE, I WENT TO THE SEASHELLS THEMSELVES, DID A LITTLE RESEARCH IN MY BOOKS, AND CAME UP WITH EVERYTHING FROM SEAHORSES TO GIANT CLAMS.
I DID ONE CIRCULAR DESIGN, A WAVE DESIGN THAT IS REPEATED IN EVERY OTHER BLOCK.
NOW YOU HAVE CHOICES TODAY IN MARKING STENCILS ONTO FABRIC.
OF COURSE, THIS IS GOING TO BE MARKED ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY COLORED FABRIC.
THIS IS WHERE I'LL BE DOING MY QUILTING.
SO YOU CAN EITHER USE THE PAPER TEMPLATES AND A LIGHT BOX, OR YOU HAVE THE CHOICE OF USING PLASTIC PRE-CUT STENCILS.
BOTH OF THESE WORK VERY WELL, ESPECIALLY AS THE FABRIC GETS DARKER, THE PRE-CUT STENCILS WORK VERY NICE.
WHEN YOU'RE USING THE MARKING PEN, SOMETIMES THE BLUE IS TOO MUCH A COLOR OF THE SAME FABRIC.
BY THE WAY, MY TIP OF THE DAY IS THESE PENS GET MIXED UP TOGETHER WHEN YOU HAVE AN ACCUMULATION, SO GO AHEAD AND PUT A LITTLE MASKING TAPE AND MARK THE MONTH THAT YOU BOUGHT THIS PEN, AND YOU'LL KNOW YOU'VE GOT THE NICE, FRESH ONE TO WORK WITH.
MY NEXT STEP, ONCE THESE ARE ALL MARKED IN PLACE-- AND OF COURSE, HAVING THAT CENTER MARK REALLY MAKES IT EASY TO MOVE MY STARFISH ALL AROUND THE TOP-- MAKE CERTAIN THAT THAT RIGHT ANGLE IS IN PLACE, BECAUSE THAT IS GOING TO BECOME YOUR STITCHING LINE TO PUT THE BLOCKS TOGETHER.
MY NEXT STEP IS TO TAKE THE BATTING AND BASTE THAT ON THE BACK SIDE OF MY COLORED BLOCK.
I WOULD ALIGN THE FOUR CORNERS, PIN THOSE IN PLACE, AND BEING CERTAIN WITH A NICE, LONG BASTING STITCH THAT YOU'VE GOT A KNOT AT THE END, PUT THAT KNOT ON THE FRONT SIDE AS YOU GET READY TO BASTE THE BATTING IN PLACE.
THE BATTING DOES NOT COME OUT TO THAT SASHING EDGE.
IT ONLY ENCOMPASSES THE CENTER OF YOUR 18-INCH SQUARE.
NOW, STEP THREE TAKES US TO THE SEWING MACHINE.
STEP THREE IS TO ALIGN THE RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, PIN IN PLACE, AND THEN STITCH ON ALL FOUR SIDES.
IF YOU LOOK CAREFULLY, I HAVE GONE AHEAD AND ON THREE SIDES, STITCHED IT IN PLACE, SO I JUST HAVE A LITTLE BIT MORE TO DO.
I HAVE MY PATCHWORK FOOT ON, AND I LIKE TO USE A STILETTO AS I COME TO THESE CORNER ANGLES SO I CAN DROP MY NEEDLE.
I DON'T LIKE TO SEW OVER PINS, SO I USUALLY PULL THOSE OUT.
I GO AHEAD AND MAKE MY QUARTER-INCH STITCH.
WHEN I'M DOING THOSE CURVES, IT MAKES IT VERY NICE TO HAVE THIS LITTLE POINTER TO KIND OF HELP ME, ESPECIALLY THIS CORNER UP HERE.
[SEWING MACHINE WHIRS] QUITE OFTEN, JUST DROP MY NEEDLE, SEW A COUPLE OF STITCHES, DROP THE NEEDLE AGAIN, AND WHEN I COME TO THAT ACUTE ANGLE HERE, I DROP THE NEEDLE DOWN AND THEN TURN AND MAKE ONE STITCH THAT ALLOWS ME TO THEN CONTINUE THE QUARTER-INCH.
THAT MAKES A NICE INSIDE ANGLE WHEN I TURN THIS INSIDE OUT.
I CONTINUE WITH THIS STITCHING ALL THE WAY AROUND.
[SEWING MACHINE WHIRS] WHEN I GET TO THE END, I USUALLY STITCH OVER A COUPLE OF MY PREVIOUS STITCHES, AND I MIGHT WANT TO BACKSTITCH THAT IN PLACE.
I HAVE FINISHED STITCHING ON ALL FOUR SIDES, AND THEN I GO AHEAD AND TRIM THE OUTSIDE EDGES DOWN TO ALMOST AN EIGHTH OF AN INCH.
ONCE THAT HAS BEEN DONE, I MAKE CERTAIN TO SNIP AT THOSE ACUTE ANGLES AND THEN DRAW AN OPENING ABOUT 3 TO 4 INCHES ON THIS OUTSIDE EDGE.
NOW, THIS DOES NOT HAVE THE BATTING IN IT.
THIS IS THE EDGING OR THE SASHING ON THE OUTSIDE OF MY QUILT, SOMETIMES KNOWN AS THE BORDER.
ONCE THAT HAS BEEN CUT, AND YOU NEED TO PULL YOUR QUILT APART AND PULL IT THROUGH TO THE BACK SIDE, I WOULD FINISH CUTTING IN EACH DIRECTION ON ONE SIDE.
ONCE THAT HAS BEEN OPENED, I CAN THEN PUT MY HAND IN AND MAKE THAT PILLOW INVERSION COME TO.
ONCE I'VE TURNED THAT INSIDE OUT, AND I'VE GOT ONE HERE THAT'S ALREADY DONE, WE'LL START THIS.
I THINK YOU CAN SEE WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN.
IT'S A LITTLE BIT CUMBERSOME HERE AT ONE POINT, BUT THAT WILL COME THROUGH, AND I'M JUST DOING MY MARKINGS ON THE OUTSIDE.
ONCE THAT'S ALL BEEN INVERTED, THEN I COME AND SET THE EDGES.
NOW, THAT WOULD JUST BE WITH A RUNNING STITCH THAT GOES THROUGH TO THE BACK SIDE.
THAT WOULD BE A PERMANENT STITCH THAT STAYS THERE.
BUT THAT ALLOWS ME TO SET THE BLOCK IN PLACE, DO MY BASTING, AND NOW I'M READY TO DO MY QUILTING.
AH, SOFT CHAIR, A GOOD LIGHT, AND MY NEEDLE AND THREAD, PLUS A THIMBLE, AND I'M READY TO START QUILTING.
I'M GOING TO START IN THE MIDDLE OF MY BLOCK, AND OF COURSE I NEED TO PUT THAT FOOLPROOF KNOT AT THE END.
IT'S NOTHING MORE THAN TAKING THE UNKNOTTED END, HAVING IT PARALLEL, HOLDING IT IN PLACE ON MY NEEDLE, AND WRAPPING IT TWICE OR MAYBE THREE TIMES AROUND THE NEEDLE, AND THEN JUST SLIDING IT ALL THE WAY DOWN.
QUITE OFTEN YOU'LL HAVE A LITTLE TAIL AT THE END, AND YOU'RE READY TO START IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR BLOCK WITH THAT UP-AND-DOWN STITCH, HOLDING MY HAND OPPOSITE, PULL THE NEEDLE IN, AND GIVE THAT KNOT A LITTLE YANK.

YOU CAN SEE THAT THEY'RE THE SAME PROJECTS THAT TONI JUST RECENTLY HAS DONE-- THE BASKET APPLIQUE QUILT.
AND THEN THIS ONE IS THE EIGHT-TRIANGLE PROJECT THAT TONY DID THE HORSE.
AND I NOTICED THAT THEY'RE SIGNED, WHICH IS IMPORTANT.
YEAH, THIS ONE HAS SUZY KOTWAS, 1991 ON IT.
- AND I THINK IT'S SPECIAL.
THAT IS THE YEAR THAT LITTLE TONY WAS BORN.
SO WE CERTAINLY GO BACK A WAYS HERE.
AND YOU'VE ENJOYED QUILTING, AND TELL US ABOUT SOME OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT YOU'VE MADE.
WHY DOESN'T MARY HOLD THEM UP?

- THAT ONE WE ALL MADE TOGETHER AS A GROUP, AND WE HAD TO PICK FOUR OUT OF, LIKE, SIX DIFFERENT BLOCKS AND PUT THEM TOGETHER, SAME COLORS.
WAS THAT MACHINE WORK, OR IS IT-- YEAH, I THINK IT WAS ONE OF MY FIRST QUILTS ON THE MACHINE.
SO IT WAS MY FIRST EXPERIMENT WITH THAT.
OKAY, ALL RIGHT.
THE NEXT ONE IS A CHRISTMAS PIECE, AND IT'S THE SANTA CLAUS QUILT, AND THAT WAS ALL HAND-SEWN.
AND THEN WE DID A WATERCOLOR BACKGROUND, AND IT'S JUST BLOCKS OF SCRAPS TOGETHER, AND A BUNNY ON THE FRONT.
THAT ONE IS ANOTHER APPLIQUE ONE, AND IT'S MORE HAND-SEWN.
ALL RIGHT.
NOW YOU'VE PROGRESSED FROM THERE TO A TESSELLATED LEAF.
TELL US ABOUT THE THREE PROJECTS BEHIND AND HOW YOU'VE GROWN IN PATCHWORK.
THE FIRST ONE IS THE TESSELLATING FALLING LEAVES QUILT, AND IT INVOLVES A LOT OF SMALLER LITTLE PIECES, AND IT'S VERY INTRICATE, AND IT TOOK A LONG TIME, AND IT'S VERY PRECISE ON ALL OF IT.
I REALLY LIKE THAT PROJECT.
IT'S ONE OF MY FAVORITE QUILTS.
THE SECOND ONE IS ANIMAL STACKS, AND THAT WAS HAND-SEWN.
AND THEN YOU SLEEP UNDER ONE OF SEVERAL QUILTS THAT YOU'VE MADE.
WHAT ABOUT THIS FROG QUILT?
I REALLY LIKE THE FABRIC, THE FROGS.
I LIKE THE COLORS, AND I LIKED PICKING OUT DIFFERENT COLORS TO GO WITH IT.
IT'S MY THIRD BED QUILT, AND IT'S MY FAVORITE, AND IT'S CALLED "TRIP AROUND THE WORLD" PATTERN, AND IT HUNG IN A COUPLE OF SHOWS.
NOW WHAT ABOUT THIS CURRENT ONE WITH ALL THE PLAIDS?
THIS ONE I HAD THE IDEA OF DOING A CRAZY QUILT WITH JUST PLAIDS, AND AFTER I FINISHED IT, I PUT A LOT OF DIFFERENT EMBROIDERY AND FLOSS AND BUTTONS ON IT BECAUSE I LIKE TO DECORATE IT.
THAT WAS MY FAVORITE PART OF IT.
I'M STILL WORKING ON IT.
OKAY, LET'S LOOK AT THE BACK OF THAT.
IT'S ALWAYS INTERESTING.
I SEE A LOT OF CRAZY PATCH PROJECTS THAT COME IN, AND SURE ENOUGH, IT IS BUILT ON THAT FOUNDATION IDEA.

YOU START WITH A PIECE OF MUSLIN SQUARE, AND YOU JUST PICK OUT TWO PIECES OF FABRIC THAT YOU WANT, AND YOU SEW THEM DOWN IN THE MIDDLE.
SO YOU SEW THEM LIKE THAT.
YOU CAN GET--YOU JUST-- LATER YOU'LL TRIM THAT OFF.
BUT NOW, WAIT A MINUTE.
NOW THIS IS WHAT I CALL GETTING UP THE CREEK.

HOW DO YOU GET RID OF THAT?
TO GET RID OF THAT, I WOULD TAKE A LARGER PIECE, AND YOU CAN PLACE IT RIGHT OVER IT, AND IF YOU SEW RIGHT HERE, LATER WHEN YOU OPEN IT UP, THIS WILL GO RIGHT OVER IT, AND THEN YOU TRIM THAT.
(SEWING MACHINE) IT'S KIND OF NICE WHEN YOU HAVE A STRAIGHT LINE TO FOLLOW, ISN'T IT?
SO THAT'S WHY YOU USE THOSE GEOMETRICS.
(SEWING MACHINE) - MARY, LET'S ELABORATE ON SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF THESE YOUNG ADULTS TAKING QUILTING CLASSES TODAY.
WELL, I FOUND OVER THE YEARS THAT A LOT OF THE CHILDREN ARE NOT BEING EXPOSED TO THE SEWING LIKE THEY USED TO BE IN YEARS PAST.
SO I THINK IT REALLY IS IMPORTANT THAT THE QUILT SHOPS AND WHOEVER HAS THE SKILLS PASS THEM ON TO FUTURE GENERATIONS.
I'VE ALSO FOUND THAT THE KIDS ARE ABLE TO INCORPORATE THEIR QUILTING SKILLS AND USE THEM IN THEIR SCHOOL PROJECTS.
I'VE HAD KIDS MAKE QUILTS TO GO ALONG WITH HISTORY REPORTS AND ENGLISH, CREATIVE ENGLISH PROJECTS INSTEAD OF LIKE A MOBILE OR A COLLAGE KIND OF THING.
I EVEN HAD A COUPLE OF GIRLS TEAM TOGETHER THAT THEY HAD TO DO A CREATIVE PROJECT, AND THEY ACTUALLY ORGANIZED A WHOLE QUILT SHOW THAT HUNG IN THE SCHOOL CAFETERIA.
ALL KINDS OF SCHOOL-- MATH PROJECTS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
THEY WERE TOLD TO GO HOME AND CREATE A TESSELLATED DESIGN, AND THEY QUICK WHOOPED UP A TESSELLATED BLOCK AND BROUGHT IT IN.
IT WAS VERY IMPRESSIVE.
JUST THINGS LIKE THAT.
SOMETIMES WHEN THEY GET INTO HIGH SCHOOL AND GET REAL BUSY, THEY DON'T QUILT ON A REGULAR BASIS, BUT THEY STILL KEEP GOING BACK TO IT.
I HAD ONE GIRL JUST RECENTLY SHOW UP THAT HAD CUT A PAIR OF BLUE JEANS THAT SHE HAD TAKEN 1/2 INCH, 15 1/2 INCH STRIPES OF RAINBOW COLORS AND PUT THEM ALL THE WAY DOWN THE SIDE OF HER JEANS.
I SAW THE SKILLS BEING USED YET AGAIN IN A CREATIVE, DIFFERENT WAY.
