Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship[bright music] Hi, friends.
Welcome to my learning corner.
I was just thinking, what do you say when you see a cute little baby or a kitten playing or a puppy with those cute little puppy eyes?
Aw.
Aw.
That's right.
You say, "Aw."
Do you know what else says aw?
The vowel teams A-W and A-U say aw in words.
You wanna know something else?
If the A is followed by L and K in words, the A represents the aw sound.
Are you ready to learn about other aw words?
Great.
Okay.
Before we start reading today, I'd like us to get our ears warmed up using a phonemic awareness activity.
So I want you to stand up, and today, we're going to blend sounds together to make a word.
So I'm going to say some sounds.
You're gonna repeat the sounds, and together, we're going to blend them into a word.
I also want you to be careful.
Listen carefully.
You might hear our sound of the day, aw.
Are you ready?
Let's try one together.
G, l, a, d. Your turn.
G, a, d. Glad.
Glad!
Good job.
Let's try another one.
Listen first.
C, l, a, s. C, l, a, s. Class.
Class!
Excellent.
F, aw, n. F, aw, n. Fawn.
Oh, a baby deer.
Did you hear the sound of the day?
High five.
Last one.
F, ow, n, d. F, ow, n, d. Found.
Found!
Now we're ready to read.
Today we're gonna be learning about the vowel teams A-U and A-W.
They represent the aw sound in words.
A-U is found at the beginning and middle of words, and A-W is found at the end of words to make the aw sound.
But there's more.
But there's more.
I have more for you.
A, when it's followed by L and K, will make the aw sound in words.
And I just wanted to let you know that the L, I crossed it out, because it is, [shushes] silent.
You can't hear it.
So when I see this letter combination, I'm really saying aw, k. Aw, k. Okay?
Let's build some words together.
The first word I want to build is law.
Can you say that word?
Good.
Let's tap it together.
L, aw.
L, aw.
That's at the end of the word, so I need?
You got it.
I need A-W. What's that word again?
Law.
A law is a rule that you follow.
Let's go to another word I heard before.
The word is fault, as in "It's not my fault."
Fault.
Let's tap it together.
F, aw, l, t. Okay.
F, aw, l, t. I'm looking at the middle of the word for my aw sound.
So?
You're right.
I need this one.
[paper shuffling] Fall, t. Fault.
It's not my fault.
Have you heard that one before?
Now I'm going to change fault to haul.
When you haul something, you move something very heavy.
Let's tap it together.
H, aw, l. H, aw, l. Oh look, it's in the middle.
I need to have [paper shuffling] A-U.
What's the word again?
Haul.
Santa hauls presents every Christmas.
Santa's always good to me.
How about you?
Last one.
Let's build a few more words, but this time with, [Isabel imitates drum roll] alk.
Okay.
W, aw, k. Walk!
That's why that says walk.
I did not even know that.
What if I change, I wanna change walk to talk.
Can you picture what letter I have to put there?
What does it say?
Talk!
Great job.
Now you're ready to read some words.
Let's read.
What sound do these letter combinations represent when you see them together?
Aw.
Aw.
Aw, k. Great job.
When the word appears on the screen, read it as fast as you can.
If you need to sound out the words as you read, that's fine.
Let's go.
[no audio] [no audio] [no audio] How did you do?
Jaw.
Flaw.
Maul.
Draw.
Launch.
Chalk.
Great job.
Now we're ready to write together.
For our last activity of the day, we are going to build one word together.
So I need you to grab a paper or something to write on and a pencil or something to write with and come right back here.
[bright music] [bright music continues] Are you ready?
This word always reminds me of Halloween.
The word is haunt.
Can you say that word?
Haunt.
Okay, let's tap that out.
H, aw, n, t. Go ahead and write that word down for me right now.
Which vowel team are you going to use to represent the aw sound?
Good job.
Are you ready?
Let's go.
H, aw, n, t. Is that what you wrote?
Great job!
We have done some hard work today, and I am so proud of you.
I can't wait to learn more.
I hope you are as excited as I am.
See you next time, friends.
Bye.
