When you read books with your child, look for connection points to their experiences.
When you read books with your child, look for connection points. Readers make connections between what they read and the world around them. For example, try connections to family members: "That character reminds me of your Uncle Juan! They both love telling funny stories." Or, "She's sure a picky eater — just like your little brother."

"What does Alvin doing?"
one student asked.
We take turns reading aloud and then we talk about it.
We try to connect the story to real life.
- So he's telling everyone what to do?
- Mmm hmm, that's what choreography is.
This is a great teaching tool.
It helps them to remember what we read and better understand the story.
He can also empathize with the characters which is a great skill in reading and in everyday life.
It's really cool when he was on stage, wasn't it?
- [Boy] It was.
- After I ask a few questions we take it a step further and write it all down.
Can you think of ways that you're like Alvin?
- Yeah.
- Okay.
Let's write down some ways that you're like Alvin.
This time, he'll come up with his own ideas so he's using critical thinking skills and practicing writing.
When we connect books to real life our reading time is even more engaging.
