Nikkolas Mohammed says discarded materials spark his imagination.
He is one of the artists featured at Creative Resilience, a community art experience this fall in downtown Los Angeles.
Its goal to support essential workers.
And Ive got these two photograp theyre stuck together.
It was a mother daughter and then just a daughter on their own.
And then it was this text of I know The Godfather in the streets, but I am the father and a mother to your child.
And I know that statement in my life..
But you've created this incredibly beautiful, sweet relationship there.
With the contrast of heavy paint.
I definitely need to see a glimmer of hope now with my anticipation with color.
Hello, I'm Bonnie Boswell in downtown Los Angeles.
Now, it's been said that art and culture enriched the substance of our lives, reminding us of what we have in common.
Rosemarie Molina is the Program Manager of the People's Project.
This grew out of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor.
Throughout the pandemic, it was nonprofits and unions and other organizations that fed over a million people.
In the first year, we've had people who need housing assistance, rental assistance, diapers, food.
But sometimes people don't receive information in that way.
Art is like another language.
It almost transcends languages.
And so we thought by doing something artful and still grounded in community cares, then maybe it would just be another way for folks to become connected to the work we're doing.
We got 1100 people on Saturday and it was beautiful and many families were there and babies were dancing.
I know that community is ready for this.
Judging by its success, the intersection of workers and art is an idea whose time has come.
For KCET, I'm Bonnie Boswell.
