[ Croaks ] [ Narrator ] It was a beautiful day on Lake Wanasink Lake.
Fishermen were fishing.
Herpetologists were herpetologing.
And monkeys were monkeying.
[ Chittering ] It's a boomerang.
You throw it, and it comes back to you.
Well, it's supposed to come back.
[ Chittering ] [ Gasps ] [ Exclaims ] Ooh!
Huh?
[ Chittering ] [ Gasps ] A Ping-Pong ball!
No.
It's an egg.
[ Grunts ] Where'd it come from?
A bird's nest, of course.
Huh?
Maybe it rolled here.
Poor little fella.
How do you know it's a boy egg?
I think it's a girl egg.
And I'm gonna name her Tiffany.
Still, it's a bad spot for an egg.
Eggs are great for some things.
The shell lets in air and moisture and keeps out dirt.
That's good.
But 'cause they're so thin, they let in cold and heat too.
That's bad.
Oh.
That's why birds sit on 'em-- so the egg is always the right temperature.
An egg without a nest might not hatch.
[ Grunts ] [ Narrator ] George had to get the egg back to its nest before it was too late.
Wait!
Eggs can break-- [ Snaps ] like that.
Plus, you shouldn't slosh 'em around.
We have to find her mommy so she can come and sit on Tiffany!
[ Chittering ] Good idea!
[ Gasps ] My paper route!
[ Sighs ] I'll come help as soon as I'm done.
It's up to us, George.
How 'bout I stay here and protect Tiffany while you find the mommy?
[ Squeaks ] [ Gasps ] I know!
Ask Grandpa!
He knows all about eggs.
Ah!
[ Chittering ] Halt!
[ All ] Yeah?
[ Animals Clucking ] [ Chittering ] [ Hoots ] Found an egg, huh?
Uh-huh.
Uh-huh.
Uh-huh.
That's one big egg.
Might be an eagle egg.
Huh?
That's the only bird around here with an egg that size.
There's an eagle nesting in the pine grove down by the lake.
That's-- [ Gasps ] We just want to have a picnic.
Sorry.
No "dresspassing" past this.
[ Chittering ] Did you find the mommy, George?
[ Chittering ] Well, hurry!
The egg might get too hot!
[ Gasps ] You found an egg?
Can we see it?
Nuh-uh.
Shells are thin.
You might wake Tiffany from a nap.
[ Groaning ] Want some watermelon?
[ Panting ] [ George ] Oh!
[ Narrator ] Allie was right.
It was getting hot.
George had to hurry.
Well, they've got to be here somewhere.
They couldn't just... walk away.
Well, they could.
I just hope they didn't.
Because that would be a disaster.
Ooh!
Ah.
Hmm.
[ Narrator ] Eagles sure did have big nests.
And really big eggs to go in them.
His egg wasn't nearly so big.
How could Mr. Renkins ever have thought his egg was an eagle's egg?
Ah.
He'd drawn his egg way too big.
[ Gasps, Groans ] [ Chitters ] [ Gasps ] George!
Did you find the mommy?
Uh-uh.
[ Narrator ] If George was going to find the egg's mommy, he had to make sure his egg drawing was the right size.
Ah!
That's our Tiffany all right.
Allie?
Whatcha doing?
Guarding an egg.
But hurry!
Tiffany might get cold when the sun goes down.
[ Chitters ] [ Narrator ] Now that the egg in his drawing was the right size, George was sure he could find the mommy.
If only he knew where to look.
Ah!
Maybe Mr. Quint knew who the egg belonged to.
[ Chittering ] That's a Red-Necked Grebe.
They nest on the water.
I saw a few over-- [ Chittering ] Ooh.
Hmm.
[ Narrator ] George had found the nest.
Oh.
But how was he gonna get to it?
You can't swim without sunscreen.
[ Chittering ] Ah!
Uh, nope.
Not here either.
[ Groaning ] [ Hooting ] [ Narrator ] Mr. Quint was right.
Grebe eggs were the same size as George's egg, but their color was all wrong.
George's egg didn't have spots.
But his drawing did.
Hmm.
That's our Tiffany all right.
Oh.
[ Chuckles ] And there.
Okeydoke.
You can go swimming now.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, could it be a sparrow?
[ All Groaning ] No.
Uh, did you find the mommy?
Uh-uh.
[ Narrator ] If George was going to find the egg's mommy, his drawing had to be the right size and the right color.
Yeah.
Uh-huh!
[ Gasps ] [ Narrator ] But he was running out of time.
The day was almost over.
Ah!
[ Sighs ] It's gonna be hard to find Tiffany's mommy in the dark.
Hey!
Let's ask the "eggsperts"!
They might know who the mommy is.
Uh-huh!
[ Slurps ] Anyone know what kind of egg this is?
Looks like a house wren to me.
I'd say it's a parakeet.
More like a house finch to me.
You got that, George?
A house wren, a parakeet or a house finch.
Uh-huh!
[ Chittering ] Find the mommy yet?
[ Together ] No.
[ Groans ] [ Hooting ] Oh!
[ Narrator ] House wrens had tiny reddish-brown eggs.
[ Tweeting ] Oh.
Hi.
[ Narrator ] And parakeets had little pink eggs.
Mm-hmm.
[ Narrator ] And house finches had light blue eggs.
Oh, George still lookin' for the mommy?
[ All ] Yup.
[ Narrator ] Why couldn't George find the nest?
His drawing was the right size, the right color-- [ Groans ] But wait.
It wasn't the right shape!
The other eggs were oval, but his egg was round.
Uh-huh!
Uh-huh!
Uh-huh!
[ Chittering ] Ooh?
[ Groans ] They all must have hatched.
Oh!
Oh, hi, George.
[ Chitters ] [ Narrator ] The Man was looking for eggs too?
Hmm.
[ Gasps ] Aha!
Ooh!
Ooh!
[ Chitters Excitedly ] What is it, George?
Let's face it.
George is never gonna find the mommy.
We'll just have to move the egg.
But... Tiffany could get sloshed!
Well, it's better than getting squished.
[ George Squeals ] Hey!
[ Shouting ] George?
Ooh!
Ah!
[ The Man ] What do you know?
A late bloomer!
[ People Gasp ] [ Chittering ] Hi.
Chelydra serpentina.
A turtle!
Why didn't I think of that?
Turtles bury their eggs in sand near water.
Maybe this one got uncovered when the other eggs hatched.
[ Giggles ] [ Giggles ] I think Tiffany wants to go swim.
As you can see, all kinds of animals lay eggs-- amphibians, reptiles, monotremes.
Don't forget dinosaurs!
[ Chittering ] Ooh.
[ Giggles ] [ Narrator ] Maybe George would find one of those eggs next year.
Bye!
Bye-bye, Tiffany!
So long, little turtle.
See you later, little guy.
