Today you're going to learn two more letters that begin at the baseline with an undercurve.

They are the letter J and the letter P. Let's look at the letter J. This is the first letter that we have had that goes down below the baseline to what we call the descender.

It begins at the baseline with the undercurve, up to the midline, then a retrace and you pull down to the descender with the slant.

Then loop around to the left, crossing the slant at the baseline and coming up with what we call an overcurve to the midline and then a dot undercurve, slant, loop over and dot.

Now I'll make that for you on the board.

Beginning at the baseline with an undercurve, slant to the descender, loop around, come across the slant at the baseline, and end at the midline with the overcurve and then a dot.

I would like for you to hold your pencil in the air and write this as I trace it.

Under curve, retrace, slant, loop around, over, and dot.

Check your writing position.

Make sure you are facing your desk squarely and have your paper pointing in the right direction for you.

Don't forget to hold the top of your paper with the hand that you're not using to write with.

And put your pencil on the baseline.

We can do the letter J to the numerical count of three.

Watch as I do this.

Undercurve, which is one.

Slant, which is two.

Loop around and overcurve is three.

And then the dot.

Put your pencils on your paper and I'm going to count to three for you.

Now I would like for you to look at your letters and compare them with mine.

Check to see that you started at the baseline with an undercurve, that you came up to the midline and retraced, pulling the slant down to the descender.

Then loop it around to the left, crossing the baseline with an overcurve and then a dot.

Now look for the hidden letter J in this picture.

It's really hidden very well.

Look about a third of the way back in the jet.

See if you can find the J. And there it is.

The letter J. I would like to show you a letter combination that is sometimes a little bit difficult.

It is going to be the J combined with the letter U. Watch as I make this.

So far, we've only learned letters that begin with the undercurve.

So since this one ends in an overcurve, we're going to have to bring it over and then under again, coming up to make the letter U. And up for the finish and dot the J. Hold your pencils in the air and write the letters J, U, as I trace them.

Undercurve, slant, loop around.

Now over, undercurve, slant, undercurve, slant, finish, and dot the J. Put your pencil on the baseline and let's write the J, U. Begin.

Now undercurve for the U. Slant.

Dot the J. We can use this letter combination in the word just.

Let's look at it.

First we have the J, then the U, the letter S, and the T. Dot the J and cross the T. I'll write that for you now on the board.

Beginning at the baseline, undercurve, slant.

Now loop around over.

Undercurve, coming up for the U. Slant, undercurve, slant, now the S. Undercurve, retrace, curve back around, tie, undercurve up for the T. Retrace, slant, the finish.

Dot the J and cross the T. Hold your pencils in the air and write the letter J, combined with the UST for just as I trace it.

Undercurve, slant, loop over, under and up for the U. Slant.

Now the S. Undercurve, retrace, curve back around, tie, undercurve up for the T, slant, finish, dot the J and cross the T. Now I want you to write it on your paper.

Put your pencil on the baseline and begin.

Undercurve for the J, retrace, slant to the descender.

Loop over.

Now under and up for the U. Slant, undercurve, slant, now the S. Undercurve, retrace, curve back around and tie.

Now undercurve up taller for the T. Retrace down to the baseline and then undercurve for the finish.

Dot the J and cross the T. Now let's look at the next letter that we're going to learn, the letter P. It begins at the baseline with an undercurve up to partway between the midline and the headline like the T. Then a retrace down to the descender like the J. Looping around, crossing at the baseline, over, around, back with the tie, and then a finish.

Let's look at it as it appears again.

Undercurve, slant, loop around, back, tie, and finish with an undercurve.

Now I'll write the letter P at the desk in the left-handed writing position.

I'm going to begin at the baseline with an undercurve and remember that's as tall as the T. A retrace and a slant to the descender.

Loop around and the overcurve touches the midline.

Then back around, tie, and an undercurve for the finish.

Hold your pencils in the air and make the letter P as I trace this one.

Undercurve, slant.

Loop over.

Around, back, tie, undercurve for the finish.

Check your writing position.

Put your pencil at the baseline.

And let's make the P. Begin.

We can do the letter P to the numerical count of four.

The undercurve is number one.

Then the slant is number two.

The loop over, around, and tie is number three.

And the undercurve is number four.

Now I would like for you to look at this letter.

Check to see if you started at the baseline.

If you came up to partway between the midline and the headline.

Pulled down to the descender with the slant.

Looped over and touched the midline with the rounded part of the letter.

Closed it with the tie and undercurved to the midline for the finish.

Now I would like for you to see if you can find the letter P hidden in this picture.

Look carefully at the face.

I'll give you a clue.

Look around the eyes.

Have you found it yet?

There is the letter P. Now I would like for you to look at the letter P as it is used in the word put.

First we have the letter P, and since it ends in an undercurve, it's easy to connect to the letter U. And then the letter T, and cross the T. Now I would like for you to watch as I write this on my paper.

Going to begin with an undercurve.

Then the slant, loop around, cross, touch the midline.

Tie.

Now I'm going right into the letter U, undercurve slant.

Undercurve slant.

Now the letter T. And it should be the same height as the letter P. Finish and cross the T. Hold your pencils in the air and write the word put as I trace it.

Cross the T. Check your writing position and put your pencil on the baseline.

First, the U. And then the letter P. And again, a nice connection between these two with an undercurve.
