Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship-Edina: Good morning, everybody.
My name is Edina Lekovic.
You are free to just call me Edina.
So I was invited to come in today and talk about my faith, which is the Muslim faith.
I grew up in San Diego, the average American girl experience, except that my parents are immigrants.
I'm from Eastern Europe.
My family's been Muslim for generations.
And I looked like any other white girl at my school, but I was dealing with my identity issues all throughout, because for me, being Muslim was a very confusing thing, because I didn't really know anything about Islam growing up.
However, it was meeting Muslim students at UCLA, meeting young people who were choosing to be Muslim, and that's when I actually decided to read the Quran for myself for the first time.
And the Quran is the Muslim holy text.
-Teacher: All right, ready?
1, 2, 3!
Very good.
Thank you.
-Dalya: Being, like, a Muslim, and then, like, hearing this, like, I really related to you and, like, the way, like, you looked at at Islam.
'Cause the way my family looks at Islam is different than, like, how other people.
And I thought I was, like, am I being rebellious if I thought this, then but it's not in Islam, but I like -- For example, gay rights, I support gays, but that's not what Islam -- different ideas.
But when I saw, like, you explaining where you came from and, like, you explaining your everyday life and when you went to college, I -- I really, like -- I was, like, it feels like -- it was really good.
-Newscaster: Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump is facing heavy criticism after calling for a "total and complete ban on Muslims entering the United States."
-Trump: 'Cause we have a problem in this country.
You look at Paris, you look at the carnage that took place in Paris, but look at Paris beyond that.
Paris is no longer the beautiful, gorgeous city with all -- Paris has a tremendous lot of problems.
-Rudayna: He -- he put all the blame on Arabs.
Like on -- on Muslim, not Arab.
Like Muslim people.
-Trump: ...became radicalized... -Rudayna: ...is one person did something wrong doesn't mean that all Christian people are bad.
Don't worry about him.
He said this just -- -Dalya: A lot of people support him, Mom.
-Rudayna: Well, just -- just the sick people.
It doesn't mean -- his word doesn't mean anything.
-Dalya: Mom?
What does the hat have to do with anything?
-Okay, no, no, no... I don't know.
I disagree with you, but... you do whatever you want.
