>> Hi.
My name's Andreas, and this is my house.
It's a nice house.
I've lived here almost all my life.
There's only one problem.
My backyard.
It's so boring.
There's nothing to do here.
I try to make the most out of it.
I need more fun out of my backyard.
This is where you come in, Design Squads.
I want you to build me a backyard thrill ride, heavy on the thrills.
I've got a second story balcony and this awesome spiral staircase, so I want my thrills in the air.
You're going to get a high tension cable, and the thrill ride must be from that corner of my house to the tree across the yard.
It's 25 feet long and 20 feet high.
I'm keeping the winning thrill ride in my backyard.
Good luck, Design Squads.
Don't blow it.
>> Pressure.
>> Wow.
>> Yeah.
>> Andreas means business, right?
Now, to help you guys out, we're giving you mats, climbing equipment, harnesses, slings.
We ran a horizontal cable across the ceiling to help you guys out.
Additionally there are more materials in your workspaces to help inspire you.
>> Okay.
>> All right.
>> Any questions?
>> Awesome.
( laughter ) >> All right.
Fear minus death equals fun.
Start brainstorming!
>> This is awesome.
>> Oh, this is cool.
>> Rope climbing stuff.
>> What is this?
>> A hammock?
>> You put, like, the cable through and whatever.
>> We don't even have to make a harness, because we have one already.
>> There's a harness.
>> Guys!
How are we going to do this?
>> We can make anything.
We are Team Man.
>> What do 12-year-olds like?
>> Everything.
>> Explosions.
>> Yeah, explosions.
Robots.
>> Action.
>> There's a rope, like a zipline 20 feet off the ground, that attaches the balcony to the tree.
And we can use that.
We can hang, like, vine-like things off it, and he can, like, swing from one to the other.
Maybe a platform that starts higher and goes lower eventually to the tree.
>> That would be exceedingly too much work.
>> So far I have him on a spring flying down to this trampoline, and then he goes over the fire, through the pungee pit, into the alligator's mouth.
>> Can we start now?
>> This is the problem with working... >> What do you want to do, Tomas?
>> Come up with something, guys.
Come on.
We don't have enough time.
>> I definitely expected us to fool around a lot when we started out.
I guess that just happens when you're on an all guy's team.
Tomas was really getting frustrated by the goofing around that we had.
With girls it's a little more focused.
But it's not as...
I don't think it's as much fun.
>> Okay, so you know how he has the spiral staircase to walk up to get to the top here, and he goes across?
He has to have some way to get down.
What if we had, like, a slide, or, like... like, around the tree trunk to get down.
>> How would we make that, though?
I'm just thinking in two days.
Because that would be wicked cool.
>> Yeah.
>> That's the thing.
I think in two days it would be really hard to do.
>> I like going up and down, up and down, flipping and stuff.
>> You know how in movies, like, when they have, like, people flying or something, they have double harnesses, where you can do, like, tricks.
>> Flips and stuff.
>> Those are so fun.
>> Yeah, yeah.
Wouldn't that be cool?
>> We could use this as the attachment.
>> So instead of just, like... >> I don't think that can happen.
>> ...pulling him forward, he could also, like, spin around, like, without tangling the rope.
>> I think this is perfect.
>> So are we settling on a plan now?
>> Yeah, I really like this plan.
>> Okay, so now we should get it down and start working on it.
>> I mean, we could probably do something really cool with the harness.
Should I try it out?
>> There you go.
>> Oh, oh, oh.
>> If we're having trouble with ideas, I say we gain some inspiration from that cable out there.
Nick, you're a braver man than I.
Go up a couple more rungs.
I'll get you less slack.
>> Again.
No, that's a little too much.
What does it do?
It wasn't adjusted right.
>> We need to rig up a different system with the ropes between the carabeeners, maybe to make me more horizontal as opposed to vertical.
>> Doesn't work at all.
>> This works wonderfully.
>> What's up, guys?
>> Hey, Nate.
>> So what exactly are you guys going for with this testing?
>> I was trying to see if I could get him so that he's just, like, sort of sitting horizontal, parallel to the ground.
>> I like the idea that you're hooking it up with, you know, different ways of riding.
That's a good start.
If you want to suspend him forward Superman style, you're going to have to really think about how you're hooking up the fixture point so you've got the lengths correct to put the single line where you want it.
Because you need this right over his center of mass.
>> And what is the center of mass?
When Nick is suspended from a single rope, he's like a mobile.
The point where he's balanced, tipping neither left nor right, is his center of mass.
It's as if all of his matter is concentrated at this one point, like a ball hanging on a string.
His center of mass hangs directly under the main suspension line.
So for Nick to fly, the trick is to adjust the lengths of rope so he's horizontal.
>> All right.
>> We can give that a shot.
>> Going to need the other trampoline on the other side.
>> Oh, yeah, that's a good idea.
Like, have him push off that?
>> Yeah.
>> Let's do it.
>> It's pretty awesome.
>> We got some good testing in, so I say we go back and try and get some, like, solid ideas down.
>> Like Tarzan.
Okay, so we have the trampoline here, right?
This is the trampoline.
This is the piece of metal.
And then we can weld one piece this way, one piece this way.
That's a triangle.
>> Oh, okay.
>> So this is in the ground.
And we can make these longer so that he can't even put it on the ground.
The trampoline's going to go like this.
>> I get it.
That's so much better.
>> All right.
And that's it.
So even if it's in the ground, he's up here, he can still push himself.
Let's build it.
It's okay.
>> So should we go hook Deysi in and see how it goes?
>> Let's go, hook me up.
>> So you guys wanting to test stuff?
>> Yeah.
>> We want to test the flips.
>> If you want to do the flips, you really need the spreader bar.
>> The girls' design uses two suspension ropes that connect at a single swivel point above.
That lets them spin.
They also have swivels at the hip to do flips.
But the suspension ropes get in the way.
So to give them room to flip, Purple Team should slide the ropes through a bar to spread them apart.
>> So I'm just going to put the swivel on right here.
>> All right.
>> Ready?
>> All right.
>> Nice.
See if you can tip yourself forward.
>> It's, like, really, really hard.
That just makes me go forward.
>> I'll push you over.
>> Ready?
>> It's really hard.
>> You all right?
Not bad.
You set?
What do you say, ready to get down?
All right, let's get you off this thing and back to work.
>> It's just uncomfortable.
>> Yeah, it's very uncomfortable on this side, and that's why I couldn't really move my legs.
I feel like a lot of it is, like, over here instead of being, like, right here.
>> Yeah.
>> So it's like, this is what's pulling me up, but it's not really giving me that rotation to go backwards or forwards.
>> Do you think it would be easier if the linkages and, like, the swivels were down more and rigid on your hips?
Like, here's your harness, and the linkage pieces were coming up like this at an angle.
But if we connect a rigid piece right here so it's just coming straight out, and then the rope's coming down like this, then we solve a bunch of problems.
>> So basically it's, like, straight, straight, and then it curves around my back.
>> I think that would probably be a good idea.
>> That sounds great, but how are we bending heavy metal?
I mean, that's a great question.
>> Well, Deysi's really strong.
>> What if we heated it first?
Like, if we heated the metal up a little it would be easier to bend.
>> Y'all did see us, you know what I'm saying?
>> Yeah, I know.
>> Bend that, right?
That was great.
We did that.
>> Good work, ladies.
>> The girls are up there right now.
We haven't had any arguments, we all listen to each other's ideas, we don't bring each other's ideas down.
We're very comfortable with each other.
I don't know.
It's cool.
I like working with the girls.
>> I think I've got another idea.
Like, if we would just replace the climbing rope that's on there, if we replaced that with this bungee line, and you just clicked that onto the back of your harness, I think you'd be able to just go jumping around.
That'll, like, make you feel weightless, but you're not going to, like, smack into the ground or nothing.
And we can just use the trampolines and other stuff just to jump off of.
And that would just be fun.
>> I like it.
I like it a lot.
>> All right, cool.
All right, so what Nick and I have been doing is we just got a lot of extra lengths of bungee cord, and the idea is regarding... depending on how much bounce you want, you can just keep adding on more and more lengths of bungee cord.
You get a lot more tension.
Now you've got a knot you can tie a carabeener to and go bouncing around with.
>> Bent some heavy metal.
>> Oh, is it all cooled off?
>> Yeah, it's all cooled off.
>> Very nice.
>> Okay, so what if we actually tried putting the pipe on her?
>> Do you want to just, like, put your butt in there?
>> Yeah.
>> Will that fit right, though?
>> I think that works really well.
>> Okay.
>> That's good.
>> Go cut.
>> Anyone explain to me what's going on?
>> We're building a bungee system for our harness.
>> So it's going to look like this, pretty much, but with bungee?
>> That way if you're going you can just, like, keep on just bouncing around.
You can bounce off anything.
>> Like, he's pretty much, like, on it, but jumping from side to side.
>> So the one... the trampoline that I finished was designed just to stay vertical.
>> Like, what we need right now is for it to be this way.
>> This way, like this.
>> Like, trampoline this way.
>> Okay, then the comes, "Dink, dink, dink," and then he jumps and then goes back.
>> He goes over, like, this way.
And then you can... >> I feel like I'm not in this theme anymore.
They changed the plans without telling me.
So I have to start with a brand new design.
If you see the trampoline here, it's shaped 90 degrees.
Now, here I have to make it 45 this way, if you read it this way.
>> It's going to be... he's coming off the side.
This bottom piece will have these notches inside it.
And this piece will have a V- shaped tip.
>> Like a lawn chair?
>> Exactly.
Exactly like a lawn chair.
>> I like it.
>> Looking good.
>> Awesome.
>> Maybe swivels aren't the best idea.
And Deysi and I were thinking we'd use the ball bearings.
>> Are these the ball bearings?
>> Yes.
That were given to us.
We can put this kind of, like, sheet metal piece around it that we'll put a hole in for the carabeener.
And it will all move really smoothly, and, like, be able to flip over with it fairly easily.
>> And then we have to weld the rod with the bearing on.
>> Basically what we're going to weld is this part to this right here, and then this part to this.
>> Okay.
>> That sound cool?
>> That's cool.
>> Here.
>> All right.
>> Think that's too much?
>> No.
If anything it's too loose still.
I think we should test it first.
>> Good to go.
>> This looks dangerous enough to try.
You ready?
>> Let's do this.
Low fives.
It's amazing.
The tension was just perfect.
I'm like... you can't go down much further.
>> How was the trampoline when you jumped in it?
>> It's amazing.
Like, I think maybe you can get those angles in you were talking about.
It really helps.
You can just, like, jump, and you can go backwards and stuff.
It'll work really cool.
>> We achieved our goal for today, which was to get... start welding.
>> I'm confident we can get this done tomorrow.
So what do y'all think?
>> I think so, too.
>> We've got this in the bag.
>> All right.
>> Day two.
>> Let's get you in the air, Deysi.
>> Ready?
>> Test the flips.
It's excellent.
Okay.
>> That's so much fun.
>> What about forward?
>> Okay.
Ah!
>> I think they're going for, like, gymnastics or whatnot.
Ours is so much better.
>> It's just like... it's really hard to go forward.
>> I think this is making the waistband move up.
>> Like, it's pulling up so much.
>> Can we, like, shorten this part of the harness so that it makes, lie, the waistband sit lower?
>> Let's try it.
>> Yeah, so Nick and I added about five doubled cables, so the tension's going to be ridiculously more than it was before.
All right.
Maybe just a little, little too much tension for me, because I can't really reach the ground anymore.
But it works.
>> The only other thing, we just try to make it more comfortable.
>> Yeah.
It is kind of... after a while it starts to hurt.
>> Yeah, it digs into you pretty bad.
>> Oh, better already.
Hello, ladies.
By the way, this pillow, it doesn't help at all.
The pillow just makes the strap slide where no strap should go.
Oh!
>> Get him out of there.
>> Oh...
Since so many parts of this harness were digging into various parts of my body, I've just gotten some strips of nice soft padding, just duct taped it on there, and cut some holes that'll fit.
All right, that's good to go.
Oh, yeah.
That works well.
Problem solved.
>> Basically we stitched right here, so that it doesn't move as much as it used to.
So now let's hope that this is the reason why I wasn't rotating forward.
>> You can't really bounce as much.
>> No.
>> Here.
Pull.
>> Uh-oh.
Do you hear that?
Something's snapping off.
>> You know what it is?
It's the stitches that we did.
>> Really?
They're coming out?
>> Yeah.
>> The stitches, the stitches, the stitches.
>> Okay.
Maybe we should just market it as, like, a backflip thing instead of, like, a flipping thing.
Just backflip.
>> You've just got to flip your legs up and go back.
>> All right, go.
Oh, yeah.
Things are getting cut, and then they're coming to me, and then I weld them on together.
>> All right, last test of the day.
Works pretty well.
I say we get this done as fast as we can and spend the rest of the time playing with this, because it is a lot of fun.
>> It's a backflipping rotating... >> And flying.
>> ...lovely flying machine that he can do whatever he wants with except front flip.
>> He can still have fun with it.
>> I have extreme confidence.
>> Let's do it.
Andreas, how's it going?
>> Good.
>> Design Squads, meet Andreas.
>> Hi.
>> Nice to meet you.
>> Green Team's going to be up first, right?
>> Yep.
>> Yeah.
>> All right.
>> So Andreas, ready to stick your harness on?
>> Yep.
>> Let's get on this and try it out.
>> All right, Andreas.
So there's a bunch of bungee cords up there, and there's some trampolines to bounce on.
Other than that it's pretty self-explanatory.
So... >> Okay.
>> Ready to get hooked up?
>> Yep.
>> Good to go.
>> Okay.
>> Have fun.
>> Whee!
>> All right.
>> Nice.
>> Andreas, see how high you can jump, just the middle one, up and down.
>> Wow.
>> Yeah, watch out for that.
>> This is really fun.
I like this one.
>> Cool.
>> Good.
>> Round of applause, Green Team.
Nice job, Andreas.
>> Good job.
>> Purple Team, let's get it rigged up.
>> Looking good already.
>> Okay, so what the Purple Team designed was a special harness that allows you to do flips, also do a flying motion across the zipline.
Right at the top where it connects to the zipline there's a swivel, so you can also spin around.
>> Okay.
>> All right, let's see it.
>> Are you dizzy?
>> Yeah.
>> Want a push back onto the platform?
>> The flips kind of made me motion sick.
>> Andreas, are you ready to judge?
All right.
Well, did you have fun?
>> Yeah, I had lots of fun.
>> Good.
So tell me about Purple Team.
What did you like about it?
>> The Purple Team, well, I liked the fact that you could do flips.
But then the flips were also the reason I didn't really like it, because it made me motion sick.
>> How about Green Team?
What did the boys do for you?
>> The boys, they had...
I liked their idea of the trampolines, but if the trampolines had been, like, a little bit bigger, maybe, then I wouldn't have been hitting the post as much.
