♪ >> Nate, where are you?
Nate!
>> Nice work, guys.
So what's this rocking test do for your plan to spend the rest of the afternoon?
>> Well, I think I might need a trip to the bathroom.
I wet my pants out there.
>> Yeah, you wet your pants?
>> I say we need to start working on the outriggers as fast as possible.
>> All right, let's get going.
We've got a boat to build.
>> Yo, to connect the two hulls, let's put two-by-fours across.
>> Yeah, yeah, let's do it.
>> Cool.
>> Put some foam in it to make it float.
>> I think the thing I like the most is that we don't have a client.
It's 100% our design that's going to decide who wins.
The best one's going to win.
At first, even Juan was freaking out, because, you know, he knows he's a big guy.
But we did all the math about how we were going to distribute the weight, and I think we did a really good job.
But we don't really know yet, because we haven't tested, like, the first hull we made.
We don't want to sink in the middle of the ocean.
>> I'm working on the outriggers right now.
We've going to have a two-by-three back there mounted to the stern, and also a two-by-three mounted to the bow.
And we're going to have... see those plastic tubes?
I'm going to have two side by side.
>> Hey, Wes?
Wes?
>> One second, Annelise.
That looks good.
We have enough caps, right?
>> No.
We have four, but if we do this we have eight ends.
>> Why can't we ask Green Team for those?
>> Juan, I was wondering if I could have these four black caps... >> Hmm.
>> ...that you don't need.
>> I love how she comes over and goes, "Can I have these caps you don't need?"
We don't need them, but... >> We need these for aesthetic pleasure.
>> For aesthetic pleasure?
>> Great.
So what do I need to do to negotiate?
>> Screws.
>> Yeah, we want screws.
>> So the longest screws we have.
>> Yep.
>> Let me go talk to my team leader.
>> Are you going to go over?
>> Yeah, Juan, come with me.
I brought Juan over.
He'd like to negotiate for their black end caps.
>> What do you want for those?
>> We want the biggest screws you guys got, longest.
>> Can we look at what screws we have?
>> Yeah, we'll come back.
>> Okay, we're going to talk about this.
I'll find you.
>> Good news, guys.
>> You took them back?
>> Well, they gave them back.
>> By the way, I found a whole box of screws, too.
>> I say we give them the short end of the stick and not give them any screws.
>> Yeah, no screws for Juan.
Let's go.
>> Why don't we just take the PVC?
>> I mean, it's easy to seal, it's stiff, and we can mount it a lot easier.
>> That's fine by me.
>> Yeah.
>> All right, I got these done.
>> You guys want to focus on the sail?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> A square sail, like, a rectangular sail, like this?
Connected at all four corners?
>> They used it when they discovered the New World.
They don't use them that much anymore.
I mean, it's pretty much straight, but... >> I'm sorry, Ana, you're funny.
Okay.
A rectangular sail would be awesome if we're going downwind, like, but again, you never know where the wind's going.
>> I mean, as long as we can rotate the sail, we'll be okay.
>> Okay.
>> Ana, you want to work on the sail while Zach and I work on the mast?
>> Yeah.
>> Ahoy there, you landlubbers.
Here's the deal.
Green Team got their sailing lesson already.
Ready for your sailing instruction?
>> Yeah, definitely.
Let's go.
>> Purple Team, this is Rosemary.
Rosemary is an expert sailor and a very experienced sailing instructor, so you guys are in good hands.
>> Awesome.
>> Great.
>> Purple Team, let's go.
>> All right.
>> So you guys know how a rudder works, basically.
When I push right, we go left.
When I push it left, we go right.
So right now I'm pulling down the center board.
It's a big piece of fiberglass that sticks down beneath the boat.
What that does is it keeps the wind from pushing us sideways, simple as that.
All right, so does anybody know how a sail works?
>> Newton states that a force must be applied to an object to make it move in a curved path.
When air molecules hit a sail, it pushes them in a curved path along the front or windward side of the sail.
At the same time, air molecules are pulled in a curved path around the back or leeward side of the sail.
But Newton also states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
So the pushed molecules create a pushing force on the windward side of the sail.
And the air molecules being pulled create a pulling force on the leeward side of the sail.
These pushing and pulling forces combine to propel the boat forward.
All right, so you guys feel comfortable?
>> Yeah.
>> All right, so want to head back now?
>> Definitely.
>> All right.
>> Thank you.
>> Thanks so much.
>> That was awesome.
>> Ready to put the mast on?
>> Okay, let's go.
>> What's up, what's up, what's up?
>> That good?
>> Actually, that looks pretty cool, dude.
>> Juan, that looks pretty.
>> It does look nice.
>> Hey, guys, can I talk to you guys about how big this sail should be?
>> Sure.
>> So I thought that we should probably maximize the amount of sail we have.
>> That would definitely catch more of the wind than just a triangle.
>> Okay.
>> I'll start doing that now.
>> Wow, you're kicking butt, Ana.
>> The grommet master.
Okay, we're done here.
>> Let's put it on.
>> All right, Juan, here you go.
This is the side, right down here.
It's where it's going to be attached to the boom.
>> The boom boom?
>> Mm-hmm.
>> You just want to zip tie it on?
>> Yeah, I'm just going to zip tie it.
>> Wow, I'm proud of myself.
>> You ought to be, too, Ana.
>> What's up, guys?
>> Is their sail square?
>> That's what it looks like.
>> Yeah.
>> Doesn't really look like a sail to me.
>> Yeah, but... >> I guess they do have more area, but this is coming together.
>> Just stop talking about them, all right?
There.
Done.
>> Beautiful.
It's so beautiful.
>> Hey, Green Team!
>> Hey, Green Team!
>> Anyway, you want to go out and test it real quick?
>> Let's go.
>> One, two, three.
>> Hey, guys, Green Team's testing their boat.
>> Okay, I'm going to get on first, and you guys adjust to me.
>> All right, hold on.
>> Juan's getting on right now.
>> Oh, it's floating!
>> Doesn't look really stable, though.
>> I hope he falls in.
>> I think he's definitely getting wet after this test.
>> Yeah.
>> It is stable.
>> It's really stable.
>> It's stable.
>> Hey, I'm trying to rock it.
>> Rock it, rock it!
>> I'm rocking it.
>> They're going to fall off if they move left to right.
>> Yeah, man.
>> Yo, I'm just going to lay down in this spot the whole race.
>> They didn't secure the top of the sail.
So they're not using all of it.
But to the proportion of their catamaran, I don't know if it'll sail.
>> Yeah, that's true.
>> It doesn't really matter.
Let's get ours done.
>> Let's do it.
>> So what did we learn from this test?
>> It doesn't take on water.
>> It doesn't take on water.
It's sealed, good.
>> It's stable.
>> In the race it can hold all three of us.
>> I have a question for you guys.
How about that upper corner of the sail that's flapping right now?
Is that doing you any good?
>> I noticed something.
When we were sailing, the sail by itself kind of made a shape, and it wasn't, like, a straight triangle down.
It was more of a little curve.
So what if we, like, get that shape right?
>> Cool.
>> Let's take it back and work on the sail.
>> All right, you guys ready to take it back?
>> Yeah.
>> Right now I'm using the leftover sail pieces to extend the sail that I already have and make the surface area a lot bigger.
Hopefully this will make our boat sail even faster.
>> The sail is done.
>> Okay, guys, I think that's the end of the day, so... >> What's the game plan for tomorrow?
>> We've got to test the sail.
So sail, rudders, and then... >> I'm going to go chill out, tan out on our boat.
>> I think we did a great job today.
>> Yeah.
>> All right, guys, great work today.
We know what we've got to do tomorrow.
So let's get out of here.
>> Okay.
>> Let's go.
>> I'm just happy that today was a really productive day.
I find it amazing.
I'm feeling good.
>> Hopefully we'll have enough time tomorrow to work on this, and hopefully smooth sailing.
>> I think we should add the rudder.
>> Can you get started on the rudders, one for each side?
>> Okay.
>> Ana, are you done?
>> Done.
>> I can make a way to connect them on.
>> Hey, Wes, I was thinking that since we need to beach our boat, we really need to have a rudder that will bend up so that it doesn't break in half.
So I'm going to cut this in half.
And add two hinges so the thing can bend up.
And then to keep it in place I'm going to have a swiveling board so that it can't bend.
How's that?
>> Sweet.
Awesome.
Looks good.
>> Yo, Juan, this works pretty well.
>> Cool.
I want to get this thing out to test it as soon as possible.
Let's just finish this thing up.
Let's tip it over.
And then I'm going to attach the rudders.
Cool.
I think we should go test this thing.
>> Yeah, let's go.
Do we need help?
>> Wait, wait, wait.
Okay, now let's go test it.
I'm cool.
Zach, how you doing, dude?
>> Good, man.
>> Hey, guys, they're testing.
>> Their sail looks a little small, doesn't it?
>> Yeah, it does.
>> Oh, well, it's not my problem.
>> Don't let them see our sail.
>> I won't.
>> Okay, so are you catching the wind?
>> It's not catching any air, so we're not really going anywhere.
Really minimally.
And it can't be left like that.
>> I think that we're going to have to make ribs.
If we have ribs, it's not going to fold.
>> Okay.
Maybe we can have two sails.
>> Catch some more wind.
>> That'll work, catch some more wind.
>> Okay.
Whoa!
There's a huge leak right here.
Whoa, that is ridiculous.
We have to seal that.
Check it out.
You don't see the stream?
Yo, I'm plugging the leak with my finger.
Let's get out of here, dude.
>> Come on, you landlubbers.
>> Ready to go test?
>> Let's go.
>> We want to catch as much wind as possible.
>> I hope there's more wind than this, because we're barely turning.
>> They're not really sailing.
They're just kind of floating.
>> Heads up.
Everybody duck.
>> Jib ho.
>> Oh, we caught some wind.
Oh, can you see it?
Can you see it?
>> Yeah, it's billowing.
>> Wow, look at their sails.
It's catching it, though.
You can see.
Their sail's doing what it...
I mean, it's doing the job.
>> Look, we even have a wake.
We're going to win this race.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Yes, look how far away we are.
>> Oh, my gosh.
Oh, they're moving.
>> Maybe you should, Skipper, steer us back to shore.
>> You guys want to go back?
Let's do it.
>> Oh, wow, look at us turn.
>> Dude, we're actually in a boat that we built.
>> I know, this is ridiculous.
And it's actually working.
>> Like, it sails.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah, we have to fix our sail, like, now.
>> Yeah, their sail's nice.
Do you guys think we should lose the curve on our sail and just do a triangle?
>> No, we should just stick with what we have.
>> Oh, so beautiful.
>> So we have this extra fabric.
We're going to make a jib to give us, you know, hopefully the extra boost with the wind so it catches more.
>> Okay, so here it's going to go like this.
>> Yeah.
And it's going to run all the way up to the top.
>> Have you got any ideas for a name for our boat?
>> How about The Dream?
>> Sounds good to me.
Like the Dream Team?
Like, the Purple Team?
>> Yeah, I like it.
>> Oh, two, three.
>> Yay!
>> Nice.
>> The Dream.
Good work, you guys.
>> I just wanted to thank you guys for working so hard.
I know you guys have nothing to gain from doing this.
>> Bragging rights.
>> Winning.
>> Hello!
>> That's true, bragging rights.
But it turned out really nice, and I'm sure we're going to do fine in the race.
>> Better than fine.
>> We're going to win it for you.
>> Yeah, we are.
>> Thank you, I appreciate it.
All right, Purple Team on three.
One, two, three.
>> Purple Team!
>> Whoo!
All right, guys, let's head to the starting line.
>> All right.
>> Yes.
>> The Dream?
>> That's their name?
>> Yeah, The Dream.
Let's flip it over.
You got it?
>> What are we going to name our boat?
>> We'll call it The Nightmare.
Just for kicks.
Nightmare.
Hey, guys, this is it.
>> What?
>> I'm speechless.
>> Let's get you the scholarship.
>> Yeah, Juan, let's go.
>> How badly do I want the scholarship?
It would be really nice to have it.
I mean, I need it.
>> I really want this scholarship really bad.
>> I'm pretty confident that our design is going to win.
I mean, I don't know what Wes has got up his sleeve over there.
>> I'm pretty confident we have what it takes to win.
>> I'm just really...
I really feel accomplished that I got an awesome catamaran-style sailboat.
>> I also want to shut Juan up once and for all.
>> All right, Design Squads, this is it.
It's the race to the finish for the Intel scholarship between Wes and Purple Team and Juan and Green Team.
>> Yeah.
>> Now, you guys have done an incredible job with this build.
I know you guys are proud of the boats you guys made, and I daresay they're seaworthy.
I can't wait to see them out there.
You guys ready for your maiden voyage?
>> Yeah.
>> This is going to be good.
>> We are ready.
>> All right, let's hit the rules.
You're going to start just outside the cove where the wind starts.
You're sailing a half mile, right across the sound, to West Beach, all right?
Now, no funny stuff.
This is a sailing race only.
So no paddling, no oars.
We're going to be driving alongside you in case you get into trouble.
Only grab us if you're really in distress.
But we'll be along there for safety.
Now, when you guys get up to the shore, when you're about waist deep, then you can jump out of the boat and pull it up onto the beach.
Now, the first team to have all three members cross the finish line is the winning team for that Intel scholarship.
Are there any questions?
>> Let's do it.
>> Let's do it.
>> Good luck, you guys.
May the best team win.
>> Good luck, fellows.
>> Good luck, Juan.
>> Good luck.
See you on the other side.
>> Wes, we're going into battle for you, man.
>> Hey, guys, we built one heck of a boat.
I mean, this is it, though.
This is the last chance, guys.
>> We'll get this for you.
>> We got this.
>> I know, you've got to show everybody that (speaking Spanish) >> I will.
>> Zach.
>> Check it, yo.
>> Show me what you've got, man.
Let's go!
>> Purple Team!
>> Dream!
>> Purple Team!
>> Win!
>> One, two, three!
>> Hoo-rah!
>> Let's do it.
Five, four, three, two, one.
(air horn sounding) >> Here we go, here we go.
>> Yeah!
>> Yeah, we're speeding, guys.
>> We've got a need for speed!
>> Pull it in a little bit tighter.
Yeah.
All right, I guess that's good.
>> Yo, we're in the lead!
We're in the lead!
>> Any day now, boat.
>> Let's get a move on.
>> Oh, I need to bail.
>> Look at Wes.
He's taking water!
He's taking water out of the boat.
>> What's the matter, guys, you sinking a little bit?
>> Where are they, where are they?
Oh, dude, we're definitely in the lead.
On the back of our hull we should have written, like, "Hi, Wes."
>> How far are they?
>> A boat length.
>> Oh, we've got some wind, we've got some wind.
>> I feel it.
>> Come on, baby, come on.

Way to go.
>> Congratulations, nice job.
>> Good job, man.
>> Nice race, man.
>> Hey, everybody, that was great.
>> I'm going to miss you so much.
>> I know.
>> Well, Design Squads, this is the end.
Before I present this check to Wes on behalf of the Intel Foundation, I just wanted to say how ridiculously cool this has been.
This has been a bit of a different year.
We had fewer challenges, and they were bigger, but in the end, it still came down to teamwork and learning, and using what you knew in each consecutive challenge.
Because I saw a huge learning curve this time, and I was really, really impressed.
You guys are all acting like real engineers now, and I'm really proud.
So congratulations to everybody.
This has been awesome.
So Wes, on behalf of the Intel Foundation, I present you with this $10,000 college scholarship.
>> You deserve it!
>> With this well-deserved victory for everybody, I say we go swimming.
>> The Design Squad experience is definitely one of the best experiences I've had.
I've always grown up watching my dad build things, but I was never...
I was never able to do it on my own.
But after coming to Design Squad I definitely have more confidence in building things.
It's definitely changed my way of thinking.
It makes everything seem possible now.
>> Get out there, start building some stuff, and see if you like it, because it's a lot of fun.
>> It's just incredible.
I mean, it's taught me so much about engineering.
I had the time of my life here.
>> Girls shouldn't be afraid to want to be an engineer, and guys shouldn't be afraid either, because if you can dream it, you can believe in it, you can live it.
>> Hey, Lindsey, there's so much more action on our Web site.
>> Yeah, behind-the-scenes stuff like our blogs.
>> Not to mention you can watch full episodes.
>> Play games and build cool projects.
>> Awesome.
Let's go to pbskidsgo.org.
