( laughing ) >> On Design Squad Nation.
>> My name is Jennifer and I want to be a pastry chef.
This is the spice cake that I made for my senior project and it looks very pretty.
I think I have a skill in decorating cakes.
I can show my creative side and my touch and my idea and my thoughts and how I think the cake will look better.
Making food, cooking, was a way I could bond with my mom.
>> Hi.
>> We'd spend more time with each other.
My mom's a better cook-- she's got that down pat-- but baking wise... Who wants cake?
>> Looks perfect.
Mmm!
She has it.
The question is, does she want to get going on it?
So she's ready to move on to the next level.
>> Right now, I wish I could just make the biggest, baddest cake I've ever done in my life.
I want to show the world what I'm made of.
>> So Jen, you're probably wondering why we're standing out here in the middle of the Theater District.
>> Yeah, I'm pretty curious.
>> So we have a surprise for you.
We have two surprises, actually.
So we're going to go check out Young Frankenstein, the musical.
>> No way.
>> You're going to love it.
>> You have to tell me the second one.
>> Nope, nope, after the show we'll tell you.
>> Come on!
>> Nope, nope.
>> You've got to wait until after the show.
>> Oh, wow, look at this.
>> This is huge.
>> Huge!
>> Look at that.
The monster is about to arrive.
( thunder booming ) >> I'm sorry, but like, I don't wish to embarrass you, but I am a rather brilliant surgeon.
Perhaps I could help you with that hump.
>> What hump?
( laughter ) >> ♪ Together again for the first time... ♪ It's alive!

Good.
Now, stand on your feet.
>> ♪ Different types who wear a day coat, pants with stripes ♪ And cutaway coat perfect fits... ♪ >> Puttin' on the Ritz!
( cheers and applause ) >> That was awesome!
>> That was so good.
>> Super funny, huh?
>> It was fantastic.
>> Yeah.
>> So Jen, are you ready for your second surprise?
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah?
>> You've been really patient.
>> You are going to make the cake for the cast party of Young Frankenstein.
>> No way!
>> So we're going to get someone to help us make this cake amazing.
Jorg Amsler from Truly Jorg's Patisserie.
>> And we're going to take you to him right now.
All right, here we are.
Truly Jorg's bakery.
Let's go meet the master chef.
>> So Jen, how did you like the show?
>> The show was great.
I had a lot of fun.
>> I did a little bit of research on it myself, because I understand that we're going to make a cake together.
What I did is I pulled some pictures up, and I was thinking that this is a very, very important part of the show.
>> That's the moment right there when the monster comes to life.
I mean, that's.... >> Right, that's it.
>> Yeah, I think that, you know, for the cast that this is, you know, this is for, I think they will recognize it right away and they'll be like, really pumped to see that.
>> It seems like it would be a really great opportunity to make this cake do something other than sit there.
Like, you were talking about some engineering into these cakes, you know?
>> Right.
>> We'd love to help.
>> That's really what's going to set this apart from a regular cake, with the great engineers we have and your ability to do those great movements.
If we want, we can do a platform where actually the monster lays on with, you know, his little scars and stuff, and his body here.
And if we wanted to, we could kind of split it in half and have the back part like, laying here, and then the front part could go up.
>> I think this is awesome.
I'd have his like... his arms coming out here, and then the classic sort of like, Frankenstein zombie... ( roaring ) >> Very scary, right.
>> Do that again.
>> ( roaring ) >> Is there some way we can incorporate shocks and static into the cake?
Because I know at the end of the show, there's a lot of that going on in there.
>> Yeah, kind of bring that crazy laboratory scene back into the cake again.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah, I like that idea.
>> So we're talking about a table, and then the monster is going to be on the table.
He's going to sit up, arms are going to come up, and hopefully in the background, we've got lightning flying and electricity going on?
>> Sounds great.
Sounds like something we can definitely do.
>> In two days?
>> Yeah.
>> In two days?
>> Yeah.
( laughing ) >> I like her confidence.
( laughing ) You're a true pastry chef, I like that about you.
>> You guys better be good.
>> If we're going to make this moving cake sit up in two days, we've got to get started.
>> Let's get going.
>> All right, Jen, I think you're going to stay here with me.
We'll go back in the bakery and bake some cake.
All righty, Jen, let's draw this up.
I think we've got to make this about three feet, okay?
Make a line here, okay?
So then this will be kind of our box for the cake, and then we have him on top here.
His body and his torso, we'll do cake.
Then we'll do his hands out of chocolate, and probably his feet we'll do out of chocolate too.
And the head we'll make out of chocolate, okay?
>> Mm-hmm.
So would you want me to start mixing the cake?
>> Yes, all right.
Let's do it.
>> Coming in today, well, I was kind of nervous, pretty scared.
I'd never been in somebody else's bakery making stuff.
>> One, two, three!
>> And working with Jorg, he does inspire me, because I kind of want what he has.
>> You want to just kind of push it all into the corners.
>> So it's really nice to just get an example and take his advice, just so I can do what he does.
>> On she goes.
That's done; we're good here.
>> Okay, let's draw it.
So we have the monster right here, right?
I love how like, raw and industrial it looks.
>> Mm-hmm.
I think we should put some lightning in here somehow.
>> And so how do we get that in the cake?
>> have you seen those tubes-- I think they're called mezmer tubes-- and it's got this beautiful light just dancing around inside?
A mezmer tube is a special type of plasma tube.
Here's how it works: Inside this glass tube, there's a metal wire surrounded by an invisible gas called xenon.
When we turn on the power, a high-voltage electric current flows through the metal wire.
Metal has particles called electrons that are free to move around and carry the electric current.
Xenon gas has electrons too, but they are normally held tightly to the xenon molecules so no current can flow.
But it the xenon molecules are hit with enough voltage from the metal wire, their electrons are knocked loose and create various paths for the electric current to flow.
When a gas carries an electric current, it becomes a plasma.
This plasma has so much energy that it produces light, like a lightning bolt.
And when xenon gas becomes a plasma, it produces a blue glow.
Let's get two of them going up here.
>> You know what else?
We need that... there's the straps, right, holding him down?
Because he's on the bed getting electrocuted, we have these big straps over him.
So we need... we need that in here somehow.
If he's going to sit up, right, we need the hinge going through here, and this whole piece right here is going to sit upright.
So if you work on the box, I'm going to think about the mechanism that's going to make him sit up.
>> Yeah.
>> Well, let's get on it.
>> All right, let's go build.
>> Ooh, it smells good, huh?
>> Yeah, they look good.
>> Yes, so they're nice and baked.
Keep going all the way.
I think we want to put a little bit of raspberry in it.
What do you think?
>> Yeah, that sounds great.
>> Do you like raspberry?
>> Yeah.
>> It's like a giant sandwich.
>> Exactly.
Now we're going to put the buttercream on it.
>> This is fun.
>> This thing has got to be really heavy.
>> I think between 50 and 60 pounds.
>> Come right to the edge... whoops, okay.
There you go.
Nobody's going to see the crack, because it's going to be all frosted.
We're going to rough carve it first, and then when I have rough-carved them, then I'm going to do really more like, the detail and really like, specific shapes.
>> So that's our cake right there, and I'm trying to make a model on the computer for what's going to happen, so check it out.
There he is lying down.
>> There's our monster, yeah.
>> There's our monster.
So he's going to sit up, all right?
There he goes.
>> Look at that!
Whoo!
We've got a live cake!
So show me how this is working.
>> Okay, so inside, there are linkage parts.
So you can see these bars right there?
>> Yeah.
>> So everything pivots around this point, right here.
>> Okay.
>> Down here, there's going to be a motor pushing on that arm.
>> Okay.
>> Pushing it back and forth.
>> Just one motion.
>> One, single motion, right.
And then all those bars are going to move when that happens, so it'll start right here, and watch.
I'm just dragging that bar around.
So it starts like that-- flat-- and then the motor's going to push right here, and that is going to make everything move.
>> Really, really nice, simple mechanism.
I love this.
>> Okay, so I'm going to start making all of the linkages to hook the parts together and make them move.
>> That looks really good.
>> It's pretty smooth.
>> Yeah.
Nice job.
I need to understand how big this cake is going to be.
What I'd like to do is make a full-scale model of the monster in pink foam.
There we go.
That's going to be the full monster cake.
>> All right, let's go to the fun part.
We're going to start clay molding and do the artwork for all the chocolate parts.
So I make this out of chocolate.
We have to make it out of clay first.
So you can make the fingers and the fingernails, and then I'll jump on the head because that's still a lot of work.
Looks good, huh?
>> Yeah.
>> This is actually the first mold I actually made.
I've never done that before.
>> These are the things I love, you know?
Just to be really creative and do like, artistic work and... >> All the details?
>> ...that's... yeah, you know, the little details?
>> And everything has to be... well, perfect, basically.
>> Right, right.
You know, it's almost like being in art class, you know?
>> Yeah.
So Jorg, what do you think?
>> Yeah, it looks awesome, huh?
>> ( laughing ) >> So I want to start building this platform here that he's laying on as well as this pedestal for the mezmer tubes and the shelf.
We're kind of taking this cake to the whole new level by putting engineering into it, right?
And the most nerve wracking part, honestly, is going to be is the cake going to stay on there?
Because if it doesn't, well, then that's our fault.
This is coming together!
>> I don't think we're going to have enough cake.
I think we've got to come up with more portions.
>> Well, looking at this picture, I think this should become a panel which opens, and once it opens, it'd be a drawer that when you slide it out, there's a lot of cake inside.
>> I like that.
( phone buttons dialing ) >> I should call Judy before it's too late.
>> Awesome.
>> Hello?
>> Hey, Judy, it's Jen.
>> Hey, Jen, how's it going?
>> Good.
Jorg and I thought under the monster, we would have a panel, and when it opens there's a drawer which is cake.
>> Okay, you got it.
>> Thank you so much.
>> Talk to you later.
>> Bye.
>> So this is the platform for the cake coming in.
It'll be sitting on rails so that when you're ready, the door comes down-- voila!
Cake comes out.
>> So Jen, we're going to just kind of mark our doors here.
Here comes surgery.
>> This is a... this is major cake for me.
>> So what we're going to do is we're going to roll out some chocolate.
All right?
Now we'll roll this up.
>> If I can do this, then I can do plenty more.
I just have to set my mind to it and achieve it.
>> All right, there she is.
We'll put on some handles and color this and we're good to go.
>> The last thing to do are the straps.
>> Start with his legs first.
So I'm just going to hand bend, eyeball it.
So we've got the servo motor mounted underneath here-- this platform.
It's attached to this metal strap, and when we turn it on, it's going to do this.
All three are going to lift up at the same time, and the monster is going to be free.
( buzzer ringing ) >> Oh, that's the buzzer.
I think our molds are ready.
Let's see.
Yup, that looks good.
Perfect.
So in order to make this out of chocolate, we have to make the mold first.
This is like a rubbery material that, you know, when you heat it up, it melts.
We let it set.
This is going to take about an hour, and then we'll come back and we'll take it out of the mold.
>> This is very detailed.
Everything is... is just there.
The lines of the hand that I drew, it's very exact.
It feels nasty, feels like my hands can get stuck here or something.
Right now I'm going to pour some white chocolate in here.
>> Awesome.
>> Yup.
>> So that's all chocolate.
Here comes the head.
Look at this.
>> That's great.
>> Yeah.
We still have to spray paint it all, but that goes really quick.
Boom, he's done.
>> We're going to put this big motor right here, and that's how we're going to lift him up.
Okay, let go.
>> All right.
>> Cool.
There it is.
>> Are we ready to turn it on?
>> Let's get on it.
>> I'm going to go get the pink foam and stick him on top.
>> Oh, cool.
You ready?
>> Okay, this is the moment.
>> Fingers crossed, Judy.
>> Oh, fingers, toes, everything's crossed.
Whoo-hoo!
Look at that!
>> ( laughing ) >> Okay, one more time.
This is amazing; nice job.
Okay, are you ready to bring everything together now?
>> I think it's time.
>> Lightning!
( laughing ) >> Yeah!
It looks great, but they don't make any sound.
>> You know those high-voltage sounds?
Like buzz?
We should totally do some of that.
>> And I have to put all of my electronics here on the shelf to hook the parts together.
>> Man, we've done a ton of work in one day.
Look at this.
>> Yes, we have.
>> Look at that.
>> Looks great, though.
>> We're going to have a moving cake.
Tomorrow-- tomorrow we do the hand-off to Jorg and Jen and they're going to finish it.
>> Tomorrow, I think I will see something that I'd be happy to say I helped create and I helped thought of, so my ideas were in it, and I think I'd be very happy with the end result.
I am tired, but it was well worth it.
>> I think it's time to go to the bakery!
>> Last night, we had a lot of electronics to do, but it finally works.
And also, we're going to hear this audio of a recording that we made.
>> Life, you hear me!
Give my creation life!
>> We are headed up right now to see Jorg, to do the final drop-off of this lovely stuff right here!
>> Are you nervous about anything?
>> I think any time there's electronics involved, like, it just becomes a little tricky.
>> So a little scary.
>> All right, day two, Jen.
It's crunch time.
I'm excited to get this all done, carved right.
>> Okay, I'm making these little boots out of chocolate from the sole to the laces.
They probably look like kid's shoe size here.
Pretty cute.
>> Here we are.
>> Cake time.
>> Yo, guys.
>> You guys, you got to be kidding me!
>> You want to see it?
>> No way, man.
>> You haven't seen the half of it yet.
>> Wow.
>> Uh-oh.
>> You ready?

>> Wow!
>> So what do you think?
>> It's great!

>> What happened?
( laughing ) >> ( laughing ) What happened?
>> It's stuck.
>> It's wasn't supposed to do that!
>> I think it's great.
More than I expected.
>> You guys want to go change and come help us in the kitchen?
>> You got it.
>> We'll roll up the sleeves, yeah.
>> All right, we'll see you in a minute.
>> So Jorg's put us to work.
We're making some nuts and bolts.
When you pull out this drawer, it's going to contain a bunch of nuts and bolts.
>> We've been using real nuts and bolts all week, and now we're getting to make them out of chocolate.
All right.
>> Whoo-hoo!
>> I like it.
>> I've never made edible eyeballs before.
It's like Halloween.
>> Now we're going to put his shirt on here.
>> Playing dress up?
>> Yup, now we're playing dress up.
>> Buttons for the monster's jacket.
>> Cool.
>> Metal shavings.
>> The scraps, the shavings.
Just pour some of those on there.
( laughing ) I love it.
>> Okay, this is it.

>> Do you want a hand here?
>> All right.
Let me start with the head, actually.
>> All right.
Okay, are you sure you got it?
>> I can't believe this.
>> Do you like it?
>> Yeah.
>> I think it's so good, you guys.
>> Good.
We've got about two hours until the cast party.
Do you guys want to have a test run?
>> All right.
>> Yup.
>> Let's do it.
>> This is our first test of the cake.
It's literally everything.
We're going to get lightning and motion.
This is the scary part, because this cake looks awesome now, right?
I'm terrified to mess up this work of art, but yeah, hopefully no disasters.
>> Oh, yeah!
>> Yes!
>> Alive, it's alive!
>> Oh, no!
>> What happened?
>> Okay, okay, okay.
>> What happened?
>> Uh... what did happen?
>> Oh, that's not even funny.
>> Are you sure everything's connected?
There's a lot of wires going on back there.
>> That was the worst.
Like, that's... that's the moment that has to happen, right?
If the monster doesn't sit up... >> That's it.
What did you do differently?
>> What did I do differently?
>> Yeah.
>> I didn't do anything different.
>> Okay.
>> This is the kind of stuff that you hate to have happen.
It's a half an hour before we have to leave, we try everything out for the final time, and something really important doesn't work and you have no idea why.
So I'm just going to write a quick little program here to debug this real fast.
>> Guys, we're here.
This is it-- this is where the cast party happens.
>> All right, let's get this monster out of here.
>> You guys, I'm nervous, I'm not going to lie.
I'm a little scared.
>> I know, I'm going to be holding my breath the second you flip the switch.

>> Okay.
>> No, two hands.
