Here's an example of how a torsion spring hinge works.
A bracket clips on to the lip of a composter.
A steel rod joins the compost lifter to the bracket, creating a hinge.
If the lifter is heavy... (man grunting) (lifter slamming) ...it's necessary to use torsion springs, like the springs in a mouse trap.
They provide a twisting effort, called torque, to help lift the load.
