- Do you think they'll like it here?

The Big Pond has the best fishing ever.

[laughing] - [chuckles] Hello.

How y'all doing?

[all chattering excitedly] - We're so glad you're here!

- La-la-loo!

- It is so nice of you to come out to visit the Pteranodons in their own habitat.

You'll find it's quite different from yours.

- It really is.

Even though I love the Jurassic Antarctic, it's fun to visit someplace a little warmer.

- Yeah, and here in the Late Cretaceous, we have flowers.

- [gasps] Oh, I love flowers!

- Well, I hear there's a whole lot of fish, baby.

Ha!

all: Yeah!

- The fish here are huge.

all: We'll show you!

- Well, what are we waiting for, baby?

Come on!

[laughing] - Yee-haw!

Let's see the huge fish.

- Uh, mind if I join you?

After that long ride, I wouldn't mind stretching my legs a little.

- Yes, please, join us, Mr.

Conductor.

- Ready, team?

To the Big Pond!

[together] And huge fish!

Whoo-hoo!

- Oh, man.

- [sighs] What a perfect spot.

- Uh, so, uh, this is where you do all your fishing, huh, man?

- Sure is!

They grew up catching their first fish in this pond.

- Ooh!

And eating them.

[laughter] - Whoa, Don, baby.

Well, how about a little demonstration, man?

- Okay, we'll show you.

First, we fly up like this.

- Then Buddy climbs up on a rock.

- I'm the spotter.

- Because of his keen T.rex eyesight.

- There's some over there, you guys.

- And then we all fly over to where Buddy spotted the fish, and then we all... all: Dive!

[splashing] - Whoo!

- Man!

Yeah, baby!

- Yeah, whoo-hoo!

Go, Team Pteranodon!

- Uh... Nice job, Pteranodons.

Oh, yeah.

Uh, no disrespect, man, but I thought you kids said all the fish were huge here, man.

- Uh, you're right.

These fish are pretty small.

all: Yeah... - They're pretty small.

- They're tiny.

- [sighs] It is odd.

I've noticed that the fish here have been smaller lately.

- And there used to be whoppers in this pond.

I remember catching one when I was a young Troodon as big as me.

Still keep the picture in my vest pocket.

all: Yeah.

- Hmm... - What's wrong, Crystal?

- Well, I've seen this happen before.

- Seen what happen?

- Buddy, since most of these fish are smaller than they used to be, it could mean that the Big Pond is being overfished.

- Uh.. Over-what now?

- Yeah, what does "overfished" mean?

- [clears throat] Well, Don, it may be that there are so many small fish in the Big Pond because most of the big fish have already been caught and eaten, which is causing smaller fish to increase as their larger predators are being removed.

- Uh... [splashing] - But as you can see, there are still some larger fish out there.

So it's not too late to fix this problem.

- Uh-huh.

- But if you don't do something fast, there'll be so few fish left in the Big Pond, it'll never recover.

- Uh, so what does all that mean, baby?

- It means that the Pteranodon family and everyone else will have to find a new source of food.

- A new source of food?

- [gasping] You mean eat something besides fish?

- [shrieks] But that would be terrible.

- We love fish, and we love the Big Pond.

- Luckily for you, you can fix this.

If you fish less now and eat some of the smaller fish, then you'll still be able to fish in the future.

- Wow, this is serious.

- It is serious, Buddy, but we can change our habits to make sure that we always have fish.

- Right, we can fish so that our kids and their kids someday will still be able to fish this pond.

[splashing] [dramatic music] - [squawks] Then we'd better do something fast!

- Um, excuse me?

- Yes?

- Hello, we're trying to save the fish in the Big Pond and wondered if you'd maybe catch any less of them so there will always be fish here.

- What do you mean?

There's plenty of fish in the pond.

- But have you noticed that a lot of them are really small?

- Uh, sure, I guess.

But they're still fish, right?

[splashing] - [sighs] Mom, Dad-- I don't know if this is going to work.

Look at all the other creatures still eating fish.

[all gnawing] - Hmm... You're right, Buddy.

Maybe we need to split up into teams to get the word out.

- Great idea, hon.

[whistling] Okay, team, everybody find a buddy and pair up.

[together] Yay!

I pick Buddy!

- But I can only be buddy to one person.

- I think it would work better if each kid teamed up with a grown-up.

- Okay, then I pick King.

- [laughing] My buddy is Buddy!

Hoo-hah!

- Overfishing is bad for everyone.

[water splashing] - If you keep eating so many fish, there won't be any left.

- But if you eat less now, you'll still have fish in the pond for years to come.

- So basically, the idea is to eat less fish.

- Yes, or eat some of the smaller species too.

That's what our family's going to do.

Right, Don?

- Psst, Don!

- Oh, right.

Throwing it back.

[grunts] [splashing] - Job well done, Crystal, King, and Pteranodon family.

- Yep, we got the word out.

Everyone knows to eat a little more of the smaller species or fish a little less for a while.

- Um, do you think we should tell them too?

all: Oh, no!

- Oh, man.

Soon as we tell one of them bunch of dinosaurs, another bunch comes down here to eat, man.

- King's right; there's no way to tell everyone that comes to the Big Pond.

We'd have to stay here day and night.

- We need to do something different.

- Yeah, something big.

- [gasps] Wait.

Maybe we can explain it to the other dinosaurs and pterosaurs with more than just words.

- Uh, so what are you saying... with words?

- Maybe we need the power of music.

- Uh, music?

You mean like rock and roll?

- Yes.

- Well, what if we hold a huge concert to raise awareness for overfishing the Big Pond?

- Why, I-- I ain't gonna perform.

I just can't take the stress.

- I'm not sure, but I think they might come in handy.

[all chattering] [gentle music] - Hi there.

I'm Dr. Scott the paleontologist, and I'm here in the Dinosaur Hall at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

Perhaps the most fantastic dinosaurs of all were the giant long-necked sauropods: animals like Mamenchisaurus.

They're all herbivores, and they grew to be the biggest size of any land-living animals that ever existed.

Mamenchisaurus grew maybe up to 100 feet long.

And half of that length was neck.

That means the neck of Mamenchisaurus was as long as the whole body of Tyrannosaurus rex.

Now, paleontologists are still trying to figure out the wonders around sauropods.

How did they get so big?

Well, part of the answer is that their neck bones and the bones of the back were hollow.

They were filled with air instead of being solid bone.

♪ ♪ But the honest answer is, we're still trying to figure out the mysteries of these creatures.

How did they possibly eat enough to survive and get so big?

We're still finding the answers.

So the next time you're at the zoo and looking at a giraffe, look up at that long neck and be amazed.

They are incredible creatures.

But remember, giraffes are nothing in size compared to the giant sauropods.

That's not good, 'cause if we don't stop fishing like there's no tomorrow, there won't be any fish tomorrow.

I think everything is A-okay for the big guys.

- Tiny, have you noticed the size of the stage?

It's kind of small, and the dreadnoughtus are kind of-- [together] Huge!

[feet stomping] - Incoming!

Oh, look out.

- We got to find them a bigger stage.

- A bigger stage?

Good idea.

- [squawks] But our next act is The Cockroaches.

They're tiny.

They'll get completely lost on a stage that big.

- Hmm, what if we make two stages?

One big, one small.

It's kind of a nutty idea, but-- - You're right, Buddy; that is so nutty.

It just might work.

Most paleontologists think that Cryolophosaurus, like King, used their crest to show off to other Cryolophosaurus.

Why would we think that?

Because plenty of animals living today, such as birds, use strange features to display to each other.

Most often, it's the males-- the boys, that is-- that do the showing off.

Here's a male frigatebird, which puffs out a big, red pouch in its neck.

And how about the amazing tail feather display of male peacocks?

Sometimes, the male birds do crazy dances while they're showing off.

Check out the cool moves of this bird-of-paradise.

In other bird species, the girl and boy birds dance together.

Get a load of this pair of albatrosses.

Since many birds living today use strange features and wild dances to show off, it makes sense that dinosaurs did the same thing.
