Sometimes when a bee is pollinating the flowers of different kinds of plants, the pollen gets mixed together.

(Bernard): So, the pollen from the flower of one kind of squash like a pumpkin, ends up in the flower of another kind, like a warty squash!

And it's called cross-pollination.

Oh, I had a feeling you were gonna say cross-pollination even though I've never heard of it before.

Sometimes nothing happens, like when pollen from a cucumber flower ends up in the flower of a tomato plant.

But when cross-pollination happens between two kinds of plants that are related, like two kinds of squashes, the seeds that are made will hold characteristics of both plants!

And you end up with something that looks different than what you expect the following year!
