IT'S A PAINT TECHNICALLY BUT IT LOOKS LIKE A DYE AND IT CAN KIND OF ACT LIKE A DYE IN THAT YOU CAN MAKE IT VERY WATERY AND PAINT IT ON AND IT'S VERY FLUID AND YOU CAN CONTROL IT OR YOU CAN LET IT CONTROL WHATEVER THE PATTERN TENDS TO MOVE TO.
- WELL LET'S GET TO IT.
- OKAY.
- AND I THINK THE BEST WAY YOU HAVE SUGGESTED STARTING WITH WHAT WE CALL A STARTER FABRIC OR A BASIC FABRIC.
- YES WHAT WE'RE GOING TO WORK WITH TODAY IS IS JUST A COTTON MUSLIN AN UNBLEACHED MUSLIN AND WE'RE RIGHT NOW WE HAVE A PIECE OF IT SOAKING HERE IN THE WATER BECAUSE WE WANT TO MAKE SURE IT'S WET BUT OTHER THAN THAT WE HAVE MUSLIN, WE HAVE SETACOLOR AND WE HAVE WATER AND THAT'S ABOUT ALL WE NEED -- - OKAY.

THE SETACOLOR TO PREPARE IT FOR THE FIRST THING WE'RE GOING TO DO WHICH IS A COLOR WASH AND THAT'S JUST PUTTING A WASH OF CAN BE ONE COLOR CAN BE MULTIPLE COLORS DOWN ON YOUR FABRIC.
AND TO DO THAT YOU WANT THE SETACOLOR REALLY FLUID.
YOU WANT IT VERY WATERY AND SOME OF THE COLORS WE'VE ALREADY MIXED UP AND ONE COLOR I'M GOING TO MIX UP FOR YOU SO WE CAN GET AN IDEA OF JUST HOW EXACTLY SCIENTIFIC IT IS.
WHAT I'M GOING TO DO IS POUR SOME IN.
- SO IT'S NOT REAL FLUID RIGHT NOW.
- NO.
- IT'S ACTUALLY PERFECT FOR STAMPING OR FOR STENCILING.
POUR SOME WATER IN.

AND THIS IS WHERE SOMETHING CLEAR IS KIND OF NICE TO WORK WITH OR EVEN WHITE BECAUSE WHITE YOU'LL SEE YOUR COLOR BETTER WITH BUT WHEN IT'S CLEAR YOU GET TO SEE WHAT COLORS THROUGH IT.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO GO PEEKING IN THE TOPS.
- NOW ONCE YOU'VE SHAKEN IT, SHOULD I SHAKE THIS AGAIN OR.. ONCE IT'S DILUTED IT'S - IT'S PRETTY GOOD UNLESS YOU'VE -- YOU'RE GOING FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT BECAUSE THESE WILL JUST KEEP AND KEEP AND KEEP UNTIL UNTIL YOU USE THEM ALL UP.
BUT IF YOU'RE GOING ONE DAY TO THE NEXT THEN YES IT'S A VERY GOOD IDEA TO SHAKE THEM UP BECAUSE THEY DO SETTLE OUT A LITTLE.
- ALL RIGHT NOW IF YOU GET ANY OF THIS ON YOU WILL IT WASH RIGHT OUT?
- IT WILL WASH RIGHT OFF YOUR HANDS.

- SO WE HAVE ANOTHER VERY SCIENTIFIC APPROACH HERE.

WHEN THIS IS DRY THIS IS THE COLOR YOU GET.
AND UNLIKE WITH DYES WHERE YOU HAVE TO ALWAYS WASH SOMETHING OUT AND THERE'S ALWAYS A LITTLE BIT OF SHADE SHIFT AND COLOR CHANGE AND VALUE CHANGE MOSTLY.
WITH THIS IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY.
- OH MY.
AND IT DOESN'T HURT IF IT BLEEDS INTO... - NO THAT'S ACTUALLY PART OF THE BEAUTY.
- AND LOOK YOU'VE GOT A LITTLE RED DOT RIGHT THERE.
I BET YOU'RE GOING TO COVER THAT UP.
- NO, NO, BECAUSE WHAT WILL HAPPEN AS THIS WHOLE THING DRIES WE'RE JUST GOING TO TO MAKE IT DRY QUICKLY.
WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO YOU CAN JUST LET IT JUST SIT HERE AND DRY ON ITS OWN.
BUT WHAT WHEN THERE'S SOME SUNSHINE I PREFER TO JUST GO PUT IT OUT IN THE SUN.
AND WHAT WILL HAPPEN IS THESE YOU CAN SEE THE THE LINES ARE ALREADY STARTING TO TRAVEL AND THERE'S SOME VERY INTERESTING KIND OF FEATHERING THAT BEGINS TO HAPPEN.
- NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT THIS RIGHT AT THE VERY BEGINNING ELIN BECAUSE I KNOW IT'S A CONCERN.
WHAT SETS THIS PAINT?
DO YOU NEED TO SET IT?
- YES YOU DO NEED TO SET IT AND IT IS SET WITH HEAT.
AND HEAT CAN BE FROM A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT SOURCES.
IT CAN BE FROM FROM AN IRON.
ONCE YOU FIRST YOU INITIALLY LET IT DRY TO THE TOUCH ALL ON ITS OWN AND THAT ALL ON ITS OWN CAN ALSO MEAN FROM THE SUNSHINE.
BUT YOU LET IT DRY AND AFTER IT'S DRY THEN YOU HEAT SET IT EITHER WITH AN IRON OR YOU CAN AGAIN LEAVE IT IN THE SUN LONGER.
THE SUN CAN KIND OF BAKE IT FOR YOU OR YOU CAN THROW IT IN IN A DRYER.
IN THE CLOTHES DRYER.
- SURE.
- AND THEN SHOULD YOU PRE-WASH IT BEFORE YOU PUT IT INTO A QUILL?
WOULD IT HELP TO DO THAT OR IT'S NOT NECESSARY?
- NOT NECESSARY.
NOT WITH THIS PARTICULAR TECHNIQUE.
IT'S NOT NECESSARY.
SOME PEOPLE DO LIKE TO WASH THINGS JUST TO MAKE SURE THERE'S NOTHING WHATSOEVER ON THEM AND IT'S PROBABLY NOT A BAD IDEA.
OKAY.
BUT IT'S NOT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
ONCE WE GET INTO A COUPLE OF OTHER TECHNIQUES THAT WE'RE GOING TO USE WITH THE SETACOLOR THEN YES IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO WASH IT BEFORE PUTTING IN YOUR QUILT BUT NOT THIS PARTICULAR ONE.
AND FROM HERE I'LL JUST TAKE IT OUT AND PUT IT IN THE SUN.
LET IT DRY.
- ALL RIGHT, GREAT.
OKAY ELIN IT'S ALL DRY.
- YES, YES AND NOW THAT IT IS DRY CAN YOU LOOK AT HOW THE COLORS HAVE MIGRATED.
THEY'VE REALLY CHANGED.
THINGS HAVE MOVED IN TO ONE ANOTHER AND THEY'VE KIND OF FEATHERED AND AND GIVEN IT A WHOLE NEW CHARACTER.
- WELL WE HAVE EXAMPLES OF SOME OF THE OTHER COLOR WASHES BUT I THINK WHAT A QUILTER WANTS TO SEE, OF COURSE, IS HOW IT ENDS UP IN A QUILT.
AND THIS IS ONE A VERY CONTEMPORARY QUILT THAT HAS USED THE COLOR WASH AND THERE'S SOMETHING ALSO SPECIAL ABOUT THIS.
- I DON'T QUILT.
MY MOTHER DOES AND SHE SAW THIS PIECE IT WAS JUST KIND OF A TOP.
I WAS GOING TO TURN UNDER THE EDGES AND THAT WAS GOING TO BE IT.
AND SHE SAID, "NO NO NO NO NO IT HAS TO BE FINISHED."
AND TWO WEEKS LATER A BOX CAME IN THE MAIL AND THERE IT WAS.
ALL QUILTED.
[LAUGHS] - THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS.
YOU COLOR THE FABRIC AND YOU'VE GOT SOMEONE TO QUILT IT.
- SOMEONE TO DO MY QUILTING, YES.
- WELL WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE NEXT EFFECT THAT WE'RE GOING TO TOUCH ON TODAY AND THAT'S THAT SUN TREATMENT.
YEAH SUN PRINTING, WHICH IS REALLY IT'S LIKE A LITTLE BIT OF MAGIC.
YOU HAVE TO ALMOST YOU KNOW GO BACK TO BEING REMEMBER THE CHILD IN YOU.

AND WHEN WE -- WELL WE'LL SEE WE'LL DO IT AND I'LL SHOW YOU I'LL EXPLAIN ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS WHILE I'M DOING IT.
- ELIN THIS SUN PRINTING IS AMAZING.
- IT IS THAT LITTLE BIT OF MAGIC.
IT REALLY IS, BECAUSE THE WHOLE FABRIC GETS PAINTED FIRST AND IN THIS CASE WITH YELLOW AND GREEN.
LEAVES PUT DOWN AND TRUCKED OUT TO THE SUN UNTIL IT'S DRY AND YOU PEEL OFF THE LEAVES AND YOU HAVE YOUR IMAGERY.
BUT IN THIS CASE YOU STARTED WITH BLUE FABRIC.
STARTED WITH BLUE FABRIC AND ALSO THIS HAPPENS TO BE A COTTON POLY BLEND.
IT WASN'T EVEN IT'S NOT EVEN A HUNDRED PERCENT COTTON SO SHOW ME HOW A LOT OF VERSATILITY.
SHOW ME HOW IT'S DONE.
WE HAD ALREADY STARTED PAINTING THIS ONE AND AGAIN TO KEEP MY NAILS SO NICE AND CLEAN.
- YES.
- I MIXED UP SOME GREEN THINKING THAT AFTER OUR NATURE WALK AND PICKING UP FERNS AND LEAVES OUTSIDE I WANTED MOST OF IT TO BE GREEN SO I MIXED SOME YELLOW AND SOME BLUE JUST IN A LITTLE CUP.
- NOW HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT ON?
ELIN HOW DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH WHAT PROPORTION TO PUT WHEN FOR INSTANCE WHEN YOU PUT SOME OF THE COLOR IN THERE HOW MUCH WATER DO YOU ADD?
- YOU KNOW IT'S IT'S IT'S IT ISN'T ROCKET SCIENCE REALLY AND TRULY SO WHATEVER YOU ADD IS ALWAYS GOING TO WORK BUT WHAT'S GOOD TO KEEP IN MIND IS THE MORE WATER YOU ADD THE PALER THE SHADE.
- I SEE.
- SO THE MORE WATER WE ADD TO THIS THE MORE PASTEL OUR OUTCOME WILL BE.
THE LESS WATER WE ADD THE DARKER THE RESULTS WILL BE.
SO IT'S A DIRECT RELATIONSHIP AND NEITHER ARE RIGHT OR WRONG IT JUST IS YOU KNOW WHAT IS IT THAT YOU'RE AFTER.
SO IN THIS CASE I'M JUST GOING TO TAKE THESE FERNS.
THESE FERNS THEY'RE VERY SOFT FERNS WHICH WHICH SOME OF THEM ARE MUCH CRISPER AND DENSER AND THEY WON'T LAY QUITE AS FLAT ON THE FABRIC BUT THESE SINCE THEY'RE SO SOFT THEY'RE EASY TO MASH.
I'M GOING TO CUT THAT LITTLE END OFF.
- SO THEY ARE REALLY ADHERING TO THE MOISTURE ON THIS ON THE GREEN FABRIC.
- GOOD OCCLUSIVE SEAL THERE.
- ALL RIGHT NOW WE'RE GOING TO PUT THIS OUT IN THE SUN WHAT IF YOU'VE GOT A DAY THAT IS SUNNY BUT IT'S WINDY?
IS THE WIND GOING TO LIFT THESE UP OR?
- IT WILL SAIL THEM AWAY, YES.
SO WHAT WHAT WORKS VERY VERY WELL ON A WINDY DAY IS JUST TAKE TAKE YOUR FABRIC ONCE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR LEAVES DOWN AND PUT IT IN A SUNNY WINDOW.
THE WINDOW WILL LET THE LIGHT IN OR LET THE HEAT IN.
IT'S REALLY NOT A LIGHT THING IT'S A HEAT THING.
SOMETIMES WE'VE ALSO BEEN I'VE ALSO BEEN KNOWN TO USE HEAT LAMPS THE KIND THAT YOU'D FIND IN A MCDONALD'S HEATING THE FRENCH FRIES.
OH THOSE ALSO WORK JUST AS WELL.
SO THESE ARE SOME LEAVES FROM -- - SO YOU'RE REALLY PUTTING THEM ON UPSIDE DOWN I'M WATCHING HOW YOU'RE DOING THAT.
YES SOME IT DEPENDS ON THE LEAF IF I CAN PUT IT ON WITH THE STRONGEST VEIN TO THE FABRIC YOU'LL GET MORE PATTERN.

THE SALT TREATMENT ON FABRIC GIVES ANOTHER EFFECT.
IT CONDENSES THE COLOR, SOMETIMES IT MAKES A HARD DARK SPOT OR EVEN DISPERSES THE COLOR FOR SOME LOVELY RESULTS.
ALMOST AS IF RAIN HAS HIT THE SURFACE.
SALT IS SPRINKLED ON THE COLOR WASHED WET FABRIC.
NOW YOU CAN USE STARBURST SALT OR EVEN KOSHER SALT.
IT IS THEN BRUSHED OFF ONCE THE FABRIC HAS FINALLY DRIED.
REMEMBER THAT THE FABRIC HAS TO BE HEAT SET AND WASHING IS ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY BEFORE YOU PUT IT INTO A QUILT OR MAYBE EVEN A GARMENT.
ELIN, QUILTERS ARE REALLY GOING TO IDENTIFY WITH THEIR STASH OF FABRIC HERE AND AND THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT WE'VE LEARNED ALREADY TO WORK WITH THEM.
WHY DON'T YOU JUST START WITH THIS OLD-FASHIONED FAVORITE AND SHOW US WHAT YOU'VE DONE.
