Woodsbound Outdoors
Eating Only What I Catch for the Night & Camping Out in the Inflatable Kayak

Summer bass fishing and camping with wildlife, coyotes, and a kayak-air-mattress setup.
In the hot, muggy summer, I hiked to a bass pond in northern Pennsylvania with my new inflatable kayak, which doubles as a comfy air mattress. I camped overnight under a tarp lean-to, surrounded by coyotes howling. Along the way I encountered deer, beaver, and a timber rattlesnake. Fishing yields a largemouth of bass and crappie, cooking over the fire while battling mosquitoes through the night.

I'm John with Woodsbound Outdoors, and I'm going to be spending the night out here deep in the Pennsylvania wilds.
There's a pond out here that I'm headed to.
It's the only accessible by foot or by bike, and it's a pretty decent hike.
So I'm going to be bringing my new inflatable kayak that I'm going to try out.
I didn't bring any food with me, so I'm going to be eating whatever I catch.
I'm going to be encountering a lot of wildlife.
It's going to be a great time.
So join me on my adventure.
It's a nice buck in velvet.
It's good to see.
Check this out.
So I was just driving along this road and came across this timber rattlesnake, black face right in the middle of the road.
Smaller one.
This is really cool to see.
This one buzzed me right away.
Soon as it saw me, it started rattling.
Sometimes they'll rattle at you to warn you when they see you coming.
Sometimes they won't.
I would rather them rattle at me than not.
And I have my snake guards on here just in case.
Because I knew I was coming to rattlesnake country today.
They like to hang out on these roads because this is where they can soak up the warmth, especially in the evenings and in the morning.
They don't create their own body heat, and they're not going to chase you down and attack you.
They just want to get away from you.
They want you to stay away from them, which obviously I'm not doing.
But really cool.
I just wanted to show you guys this.
They're important to the ecosystem.
They help to control rodent populations, which in turn can mean less ticks.
So less diseases like Lyme disease.
And if this stick wasn't really long, I wouldn't be moving it.
So I would not recommend doing this yourself.
If you're not experienced.
And I'm just going to get it off the road.
So nobody hits it.
Now as you can see, they don't want to bother you.
That's why it's a good idea to avoid walking through thick stuff like this as well.
They don't want to bite you.
You still don't want to step on one or get too close and startle.
A little garter snake.
Lots of snakes out to the found some ghost pipe.
This is a mild pain reliever.
Have a bit of a headache right now, probably because of the heat.
So I'm going to have some of this.
Check out these coyote tracks.
Some big ones.
Lots of coyotes in this area.
Last night I stayed at my family's hunting camp.
It's right down the road from here.
And today I'm going to be hiking into a pond.
The place I used to fish every now and then.
It's got some nice bass in it, some panfish.
Then after that, I'll find a place to set up camp for the night.
Somewhere around there.
Yesterday I wanted to drive around some of these backroads and do some exploring while I'm up here.
I'm always looking for new camping areas and places to hunt and fish.
It's mid-July and it is hot and humid.
That looks like a great spot to park.
So there's my inflatable kayak.
I got an inflatable one so I can take it hiking with me.
I'm going to have to figure out a better carrying case for this too.
What this will do for now.
Mosquitoes are thick today.
The nice thing is we got some yarrow here.
So I got my bug repellent yarrow here.
When they get real bad, I tucked this stuff in my ears under my hat.
I might look pretty stupid, but it helps for my fishing rods.
Follow this trail here.
It's actually a pipeline watching for snakes along the way.
I got about a two mile hike ahead of me, so it's going to be fun.
More ghost pipe.
That's a big fly.
Almost there.
So we finally made it.
And now I'm going to go inflate the kayak and do some fishing.
I've never fished it with a kayak or a boat.
There's not much shore access here.
Most of it's really swampy and weedy.
So with the kayak, I'll be able to fish places where I normally wouldn't be able to.
Oh, I did work up a sweat on that hike.
And I have the air pump in my backpack.
Let's drink some water first.
Oh.
Was the seat for it.
Got my paddle.
Tackle box.
First I got to inflate the floor.
I picked this up at Walmart for, like, 130 bucks.
Seems like pretty good quality.
We'll find out.
Thats one side.
This comes with two seats.
It's a two person kayak.
I'm just going to put all my gear where the second seat would normally be.
Give it some weight in the front.
So check your paddles if you buy one of these.
Because I got two right sided blades for this paddle.
I didn't realize that when I left the house.
Other than that, it's not bad at all.
It's very peaceful out here.
And there's a trail that loops around this whole area.
There's a ton of ponds here.
This is the biggest one.
This is the only pond I've ever fished.
So not really sure what the smaller ponds are like.
We're going to start this off with some yum dingers.
They're just like Sancho's.
Really good for bass.
Just looks like a big sparkly worm.
And I hook this to be weedless, something like that.
Just like to let it sink and just jig it every now and then.
If I don't get any bass, I'll go after panfish, just so I don't go hungry.
Just had a bite.
On my other line.
We're going to put a Nightcrawler.
See what happens.
I'm going to try over by these dead trees.
Bass like structure like that.
Something big jumped.
Caught something.
Things pull me around.
Beautiful.
Nice bass.
Minimum size this time of year for largemouth bass is 12in.
So that's legal.
Be eating.
good tonight.
I'm glad it's calm, because every time there's a breeze, this kayak gets blown around.
It's the only downside to it so far.
I can't complain.
It's helping me catch fish.
Give it a jig every now and then.
Just kind of pop it along the bottom.
Theyll bite it usually.
Oh, had a bite.
Theyll bite it usually when you pause, when the worm's not moving.
There's a beaver.
And it's not happy to see me.
They'll slap their tail at you if they don't like you being there.
It's their way of giving a warning.
There's an osprey.
Had a bite.
We're going to try something smaller.
Let's try this curly tail jig.
Crappie, crappie.
All right, that'll go good with the bass.
Well, sun's going down, so I'm going to start heading back to shore.
Beautiful evening.
Couldn't ask for better.
Caught something else?
Trolling.
Another crappie.
I got enough to eat, so I'm just going to let this one go.
They are loving the white curly tail jig.
I'm just casting it out there and making my way back to shore.
And they're hitting it.
Nice buck over there.
All kinds of wildlife out tonight.
Wow.
These mosquitoes are bad tonight Getting attacked.
Got a little something to keep these mosquitoes away.
Cuz they're bad right now.
Incense.
I am getting eaten alive out here.
Look at this smoke going.
Any kind of smoke, it's going to keep them away.
Doesn't have to be a special scent or anything, but if it's a scent that they don't like, like lavender, for example, might help even more.
But for the most part, they just don't like the smoke.
It's definitely helping.
I like to surround my campsite with these things.
So I'm just going to get all my stuff packed up and head up to this campsite up here that I saw on my way in.
All right.
Let's head over to this campsite right here.
There's a picnic table, a little fire ring.
It's perfect.
There's already some firewood here for me, which is going to be plenty.
I'm going to go get the kayak and the rest of the stuff.
Let's get a fire going.
My blanket.
Coyotes are active tonight.
There's different packs of them howling at each other.
Not too far away either.
Let's get these fish cleaned up.
I'm going to take the scales off first.
Just run your thumb up like that.
Get them off nice and easy.
So I got all the scales.
Now take the guts out.
Now Ill Just clean that up some.
So we got this bass all cleaned up, ready to cook.
Now I'm just going to score it.
And then season it.
And I got some new seasoning to try out, too.
So I'm pretty excited about Smokey Bayou.
We're going to use this grate to cook on.
Spread those coals out a little bit so it doesn't get too hot.
Now for the crappie.
So I have it descaled and gutted too.
So we're going to score it.
I do love me some crappie.
If I didn't catch this big bass, I would have just probably ended up catching a bunch of these.
This is a nice, calm, cool night tonight.
And for my mattress tonight, I am just going to sleep in the kayak.
It will be perfect.
It'll be like a nice comfy air mattress.
It's actually a really nice kayak.
A lot better than I expected it to be.
That is looking good.
So those are about done.
This thing is nice.
Little swiveling.
Great.
I got to put something like this in my yard.
The fish is served.
Definitely happy with that seasoning.
The crappie was excellent.
Now for the bass.
Very good.
Some people don't like bass.
Not sure why.
It has a flaky white meat.
Slightly sweet.
Very juicy too.
It is good.
My ridge line.
I'll just put the kayak right under there.
So I got the inside of this kayak all dried out with my old shirt.
Since I brought an extra shirt.
So now it's nice and dry in there.
I don't think it's supposed to rain tonight, but either way, I'll stay dry.
Oh, this is comfy This kayak makes a great air mattress.
Have my hammock bug net here.
Oh, we're just going to drape this over me.
No mosquitoes tonight.
Well, I'm getting tired.
It's getting late, so I'm going to go to bed.
I'll see you guys tomorrow.
Well, it was a comfy night in the kayak.
Slept pretty good last night.
Turned out to be a nice sunny day today.
It's getting warmed up.
There were coyotes howling all over the place last night.
Different packs of them were howling at each other.
I'd get one over here and one over there and some out that way.
They won't bother you, though.
For the most part, you just got to give them their space.
They're more afraid of you than you are of them.
This is a beautiful area.
Tons of wildlife.
The fishing's good.
Definitely going to be back.
There's a little tarp folding trick Im going to grab the middle on each side.
Bring them together.
And then grab the middle of the center of the tarp and pull back.
There you go.
Now it's folded in half twice already.
You can even do that again.
And you just fold it up from there.
Quick and easy.
This ridge lines really easy to take down.
And I'll get the other side.
A little clamp tricks to make your life a lot easier and more efficient.
All right, let's get out of here.
I'm going to try carrying this kayak a different way.
Packs a little heavy, but.
We'll make it.
Well, I hope you guys enjoyed the video.
It was a short trip, but I plan on doing a longer one next time.
So stay tuned and join me in my next one too.
Crank that AC up.
If you enjoyed this video, Ive got plenty more just like it.
