On the tenth of November 1775, in the early stages of the American Revolutionary War, the 2nd Continental Congress sanctioned 2 battalions of Marines to serve in conjunction with the newly formed Continental Navy. The intended function of the marines, were to be proficient in naval combat, maritime skills, as well as standard land combat.
