During the winter of 1780–81 the Pennsylvania Line, a unit of about 2,400 men, was encamped at Jockey Hollow, New Jersey. Their living conditions were deplorable. To make matters worse, many of the solders hadn’t been paid in nearly a year. At the time, soldiers often served enlistments “for three years or the duration of the war.” Many soldiers thought that meant three years or less.
