HECTOR (sighs): Look, this camera's on Ulrich, the bear.
This, on the armor, the French cabinet was a wedding present, and that painting's an original.

I can't believe you've been sat up here the whole time, watching us.
(sighs) A few months ago, some drunken louts smashed my medal cabinet.

Bly, you're aware there's a murder investigation going on inside your house that you're now a viable suspect for?

HECTOR: I must say, this is a complete affront.

Especially since you were having an affair with the victim.
How on earth do you jump to that conclusion?
TANIKA: You requested a receipt for a hotel room booked under Freddie's name on the night of the reunion-- and you told us that you didn't see him that evening.
I wasn't having an affair with Freddie.
JUDITH: So, how do you explain the receipt?
It's complicated.
I'm not denying I asked for it, but... SUZIE Oh!
(chuckles) It's awkward, idn't it?
I mean, sometimes people do stuff.
They don't want to be seen by anyone or caught.
And that's it, idn't it?
You might not have been having an affair with Freddie, but you knew that he was having an affair.
JUDITH: And why would you ask for the receipt, unless it was useful to you for another reason?
(sighs) Things have been rough at work.
There was a partner position opening up.
It's competitive, so I had to bring something big to the table.
What does that have to do with Freddie?
His wife's company developed a hybrid solar generator system.

It's amazing for the environment, and it would have brought in a ton of money.
I saw him with that woman at the hotel, by accident, and it was like it just fell into my lap.

I'm assuming that's what you did.
JESSICA: After a little push, Freddie agreed to help.
But the contracts weren't signed yet.
I mean, why would I do him any harm before the deal was done?
You stalled us by a day.

The woman, the one Freddie was having an affair with, her name's Sasha Hill.

And we think we can pinpoint the moment of Freddie's death.

Una is in the frame at 21:21 and 34 seconds.
(key taps, computer chirps) That's where she hears Freddie shout.
It also means Una's alibi checks out, so that's a good start.
Well, this is even better.
There's a camera in the entrance hall, pointing at the bear.
(mouse clicks) Becks passes it seconds before the shout, and immediately afterwards, her and Jessica enter frame and head towards the stairs.
(key taps, computer chirps) BRENDAN: So, that leaves Ryan and Oskar-- anything?
Look at this camera.
(mouse clicking) Wait for it.
(key taps, computer chirps) TANIKA: 21:21 and 34 seconds.
So, Oskar.
You might stop enjoying this so much now.
(mouse clicking) (key taps, computer chirps) JASON: 21:21 and 34.
TANIKA: Well, that's all of them.
ALICE: Yep.
Yep, they were all on camera at the time of death, or immediately afterwards.
What about Hector Bly?
Well, there's a camera blind spot around his secret room, but we did a sweep of his computer to check his alibi, and he was playing internet chess at the time.
Yeah, it's called Blitz Chess.
It's super-fast.
Every move is recorded on the server.
He didn't have time to leave his desk during the match.
That's impossible.
So, if it wasn't any of our houseguests, and it wasn't Hector Bly, then who killed Freddie?
♪ ♪ I don't understand.

You know where we were and what happened.
OSKAR: And you said we're on camera, so it can't be one of us.
TANIKA: Our problem lies in the fact that two of you saw another person outside the library.
JESSICA: But if the evidence suggests there wasn't, then surely that's the most likely option.
It was dark-- I don't think they know what they saw.
We didn't just imagine someone.
OSKAR: He's right.
There was definitely someone there.
But I don't get it.
You find a secret room, with someone hiding back there, watching us, and you're questioning us?
Surely he was outside the library.

Bly has an alibi covering that period of time.

Oh, she speaks!
Just because I'm not getting angry doesn't mean I don't want to get out of here as much as you do.
JESSICA: No, you're loving the gossip too much!

TANIKA: In case you've forgotten, you're all part of a murder investigation.
We are trying to get to the truth.
OSKAR: We've told you everything we know.
There's even camera footage proving that none of us killed Freddie.

TANIKA: We're trying to get to the bottom of this as quickly as we possibly can, and for that to happen, we really need you to stay here.

Well, you hide smaller words in larger words or phrases.

Just because she wasn't having an affair with Freddie doesn't mean she didn't kill him.
And I'm still aware that Una lied and has been keeping a very low profile.
Ryan has a viable motive and Oskar threatened the victim.
Keep looking into them.
I need you to double-check everything we've got so far, and any time someone from that house appears on one of Hector's cameras, I want it logged.
As far as I'm concerned, any of them could still be responsible.
We're missing something.

Because I think this book is important, and he needed to keep it safe.
Another nice message from Ryan, exactly like the others.

It says "York University."
It's the front cover of a dissertation.
Oh, this is the essay that got Oskar thrown out of uni.
So, why would Freddie have this?
Well, he was working back at York.
Maybe he found it.

JUDITH: And brought it with him to taunt Oskar.

But shoving this in Oskar's face... (exhales) That could have pushed him over the edge.
We need to go and talk to him.
♪ ♪ We found Freddie's copy of Ryan's book.

JUDITH: It'd been hidden quite strategically.

Freddie brought it back to taunt you about your failure.

They found evidence of plagiarism in the essay, and matched the signature on this cover sheet to the one on my passport, and in their minds, I was instantly guilty.
Did you fight it?
OSKAR: I tried, but when I went to find the original essay on my laptop, the entire folder was gone.
I don't know if someone deleted it or if it was just a computer error, but... (inhales) There was no trace at all.
No proof it ever existed.
Nothing to fight with.
Well, that's convenient.
I swear I'd never seen the plagiarized version before.
You must believe me, surely.
♪ ♪ I, I don't want this.
We will have to tell the police about this.
(sighs): Yeah.
♪ ♪ It's all happening again, isn't it?
No one believed me then, and now no one will believe I didn't kill Freddie.

Well, it suggests they're only incriminating if they're together.
A clue hidden within a clue.

Look at the back.
The handwriting doesn't match.
If what Oskar said was true, then the writing in the book is his, not Ryan's.
So, why doesn't it match the handwriting on the back of the cover sheet?
I think someone forged this cover sheet to make it look like Oskar had written the plagiarized essay.
But who?
What if Freddie did it, Oskar found out, and wanted revenge?
Mm, maybe.
But we need to work out whose handwriting this is.
How are we going to get handwriting samples from a group of people who are already on high alert?
Well, if it's one of our suspects, this could point us towards the killer.
But is it enough to implicate them?
♪ ♪ Travel sweet?
Ooh, cheers.
How can I help, Mrs.
Potts?
Well, I know you're busy logging Hector's footage.
Mm.
But I wondered if you could kindly take me through some of it.
Sure thing, but all our suspects are accounted for.
SUZIE (scoffs): Yeah, except this person.

JUDITH: Well, that's exactly what we're here to try and work out.
JASON: They were mostly in the kitchen and sitting room.
(candy crunching) (mouse clicking) This is when they leave for lunch.
(key taps, mouse clicks) And then... SUZIE: Stop!
(key taps, computer chirps) Who's that?
It's at 4:17 p.m.
That's before the guests came back for dinner.
(key taps) That's Ryan.
He got back early to do the treasure hunt.
Course he did.
(smacks lips) Mm.
Got excited, thought I'd found something.
(chuckles) Could you take us forward to the moment Freddie died?
(mouse clicking, keys tapping) Here we go.
(key taps) (computer chirping, key tapping) Una.
(mouse clicking) There's Oskar.
And Ryan.
(key taps, computer chirps) I think this might be the quietest you two have ever been.

There's no sound.
SUZIE: Judith?
We need to have clearer conversations when this happens.

They're all turning towards the noise.
In their witness statements, they all say they heard the shout.
Now, if the shout came from the library, Oskar would have looked down and left.
But on the footage, he instinctively looks down and right.
Oh, that's very clever.
I think I know who the killer is.
We have to get back to the house.
And I need to make a call.
SUZIE: Well, we'd better get our skates on.
Becks said everyone's getting ready to leave.
My van's round the back, Judith.
(engine starts) (siren blaring) ♪ ♪ (tires screeching) JUDITH: Suzie, are you sure this is the right way?
SUZIE: Trust me, Judith.
♪ ♪ JESSICA: We gave them time.
We can't wait here forever.
We're heading to the same station, so it just makes sense to go, too.

OSKAR: That's not my writing.
JUDITH: The university may have matched your signature, but no one considered that the most insignificant writing on the document could be the most revealing.
Someone framed you, Oskar.
And we can prove it.
(siren blaring, car approaching) (siren and engine stop) Yeah, I'll have that.
Thanks.
(police radios running) TANIKA: How did you get here this quickly?
Yeah, I know a few shortcuts.
(laughs) You are very lucky that the speed camera on Winter Hill is out of action.
(laughs) Is everyone else still in the house?
JESSICA: Yes.
Let's go, now.
♪ ♪ I guess wait there.
(house door opens) You see, people are surprising.
Freddie was surprising.
All weekend, we've been hearing about Freddie's faults, but you were still friends with him.
You wanted to spend time with him.
We were thinking about what Freddie did wrong that could have provoked his murderer.
What we didn't consider is that Freddie died because he did something right.
TANIKA: Last chance for a confession.
You can't still think that one of us did it?
Come on, not this again.
Judith, who killed Freddie?
Ryan.
Uh, would you like to continue, or shall I?
Are you joking?
Absolutely not.
He's also responsible for Oskar's expulsion from university.
(Ryan scoffs) Are you really suggesting I ruined one friend's life and, and then killed another?
We've been over this.
I didn't know about Freddie and Sasha, and why would I frame Oskar?
Well, let's start there.
I don't think you intended to frame Oskar, not originally.
Becks told us how you struggled at university.
In the foreword to your book, you say yourself, it was the toughest time of your life.
(scoffs) How you were suddenly a little fish in a big pond.
And?
SUZIE: When you got to your dissertation, you panicked, and you plagiarized material to get it finished.
(Ryan scoffs) But when it came to actually handing it in, you knew you wouldn't get away with it, so you put your cover sheet on Oskar's essay, forged another, signed supposedly by Oskar, and put that on the plagiarized essay.
It wasn't about framing Oskar, it was about self-preservation.
You knew you'd have to submit something to finish the course, and you couldn't bear the thought of failing.
Faking the signature of someone you knew so well can't have been hard.
You even deleted the essay from his computer.
Well, you lived together.
You certainly had the access.
Oskar was devastated.
He didn't notice the handwriting on the back of the cover sheet that would have exposed you.
♪ ♪ You hired me.
I worked for you.
All these years, you knew what you did, and you said nothing?
RYAN: I didn't... Oskar, I'm sorry.
But this has nothing to do with Freddie's death.
I didn't kill him!
We're getting to that.
JUDITH: Freddie must've been digging around in all your records, presumably looking for something funny to bring back to the reunion: dirt, gossip.
But what he found was the dissertation in Oskar's records.
SUZIE: He brought it back and confronted you, didn't he?
JUDITH: Did he give you an ultimatum?
We've all heard that you were both rivals.
RYAN: What's up?
We're about to go.
You know the unexpected bonus about my new job?
Access to all the records.
Everyone's grades.
The reports.
The disciplinaries.
There's not a shred of evidence for any of this.
You said that you grew out of the rivalry, and I believe you might have, but I don't think Freddie did.
That's why he was sleeping with your ex-wife.
Freddie discovered something huge.
He wasn't going to stand by with the knowledge that you had cheated, framed Oskar, and lied about it.
And it must have been a nice added bonus that he'd get to destroy his old rival's reputation, while restoring Oskar's.
FREDDIE: That's your handwriting on the back, isn't it?
Yeah, I'd recognize it anywhere.
You swapped Oskar's dissertation for yours.
Looks like you've got an apology to make.
(chuckles) You can't be serious.
You can't prove anything with that.
Oh, I bet I can.
I think Oskar would give it a good shot, too.
That lost him his entire degree.
Do you think he's going to be happy knowing the real reason he ended up as your lackey?
I mean, what were you thinking?
♪ ♪ What are you going to do?
Give you the benefit of the doubt.
And a deadline.
If you don't say something by the time we leave, I will.
Let me show you something.
♪ ♪ I'm on camera at the time of the murder.
We all are!
We went back over that footage a million times, and Judith found something we had all missed.
You told us yourself you had extra access to the house that day.
Your treasure hunt.
On the recordings, you move from room to room, all perfectly innocent.
RYAN: That's right.
JUDITH: You spend just over a minute planting a clue in each room except for here, where you spend nearly six minutes in the camera blind spot, right by Hector's secret door.
Why would you spend so much time in this small space unless you'd found something?
Hector's cameras.
There was a man hiding in there.
(laughing): How did I supposedly find his hideout?
He'd have seen me.
Because he wasn't there the whole time.
I reckon you didn't have much of a plan until then.
And with only six of you in the house, you knew that hurting Freddie would be too risky, because the police would know it was one of you, and you couldn't let the news about the dissertation get out, because that would ruin everything that you'd built up.
Your charitable foundation, your... Well, your reputation as an honorable man.
Knowing about the cameras, it gave you the ingredients for the perfect alibi.
You even planted the idea that there was another person in the house first.
The figure outside the library.
OSKAR: But I saw that person-- there was someone there.
Exactly!
JUDITH: You did see someone.
You saw Ryan and Ryan saw you, and he knew that if he corroborated what you'd seen, then you'd both look innocent.
♪ ♪ A shared witness statement and the suggestion of another person in the house who could have carried out the murder, something that ultimately led us to Hector.
♪ ♪ SUZIE: When you walked into the library and saw Freddie... 13... SUZIE: ...you spotted the knife... ...14, 15... SUZIE: ...you took it... ...16, 17... SUZIE: ...and you killed him.
(knife stabs, Freddie grunts) (gasping) RYAN: Very entertaining, but you're forgetting that I was on camera when everyone heard the shout.
You were.
We'd always assumed that it was Freddie who shouted, but, in reality, it could be any man's voice.
Which explains why Oskar looks the wrong way when he hears the sound on the CCTV.
Because the shout didn't come from the library.
It came from you in the hallway.
Freddie was already dead.
JUDITH: You knew exactly where the camera pointed.
And, with your back to it, you shouted.
(shouts) JUDITH: Then you turned to the supposed source of the noise, knowing everyone else would, too.
TANIKA: It's quite an impressive sleight of hand, but the only thing you didn't find was the dissertation cover.
I'm guessing you searched the house when you set the treasure hunt, but you had no idea Freddie would've hidden it so well.
JUDITH: Freddie knew you'd be after the evidence.
He anticipated that you'd try and steal the dissertation cover back.
That's why he went to such great pains to hide it, paired with a sample of Oskar's real handwriting.
He didn't realize how far you'd go to silence him.
(house door opens) COLIN (in distance): I'm here!
UNA: Who's that?
JUDITH: Perfect timing.
COLIN: Nearly there!
Is that... Colin?
Yes, it is.
(room door opens) I'm sorry I took longer than expected, but I've got it.
It was at the bottom of the ottoman.
I think you're right on time-- thank you.
Becks, do you mind if I borrow this?
No.
Suzie, have you got the dissertation?
"Happy Birthday, Becks.
"Here's to another 20 years "of friendship.
"Love, Ryan."
The handwriting matches.
Conclusive proof.
(exhales) ♪ ♪ (scoffs) ♪ ♪ I didn't want to hurt him.
It all spiraled.
You've got to believe that.
But after everything... I couldn't risk the foundation-- everything I built-- being exposed as a cheat and a liar.
And, what?
All as part of Freddie's ego trip?
If there was any other way... I don't know.
What else could I do?
Think of how many people the foundation helps.
It wasn't about me.
It wasn't.
It was only ever about you.
(gasps) (handcuffs clicking) (police radios running) ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Mind your head.
I don't understand why I can't keep hosting.
(car door closes) I can't afford the upkeep-- I'll lose it.
We've been over this, Mr.
Bly-- hidden cameras are illegal.
JUDITH: You might not be able to host anymore, but why don't you open it up?
Let people see it, wander the gardens.
Charge a modest fee for the pleasure.
You could even officially install cameras that way, too.
Well, something to think about, but the public, uh, not sure how I feel about that-- more people.
Well, you're lucky that none of this lot want to press charges.
I still think the courts would side with me.
Uh, Tanika.
Can I ask you a favor?
This case has got me thinking, and it seems I could do with a bit of help.
And I'd much rather ask my friends than a stranger.

I know exactly the person you should call.
You'll have your degree within a week and an apology-- make that a public apology.
Just a degree will do for now.
I hate how everything's turned out, but I'm so pleased for you.
I just hope I can salvage the foundation.
With Ryan gone, it's not going to be easy.
