I want to tell her how much she was loved.
[man] It is hard, and you think about it every day.
I'll never, ever give up looking for me mother.
[Davina] There are many reasons why people across Britain are searching for missing family.
It's a feeling that's deep inside that you're on your own.
Keeping secrets and keeping people locked away, nothing good ever comes of that.
Some need to know their identity.
You look at yourself and you think, "Where am I from?
Who do I look like?"
Others have difficult questions.
Is she okay?
Is she still alive?
Did she not want me?
And why did she not want me?
So imagine the moment when the answer you need is just around the corner.
I'm not that far away so I should be with you shortly.
[exhales sharply] Oh, it gets a bit real, doesn't it?
[Nicky] In this series we uncover unexpected truths... Two daughters?!
What?
Another daughter?
...find people that no one else could trace... [woman] He got knighted by the Queen!
Does that make me a princess?
[sobbing] ...and reunite families after a lifetime apart.
Mwah!
I think that's what I've wanted for 50 years.
[Davina] This week, as one man seeks forgiveness from his daughter...
I really and truly like to say to her how sorry I am.
...his search affects people across the globe and throughout generations.
[woman] Families tend to perpetuate the same mistakes.
Basically, what happened to me has happened to my daughter.
This story begins with our oldest searcher ever.
At 86 years old, he's desperate to find his long lost daughter.
I feel this is my last chance.
I'm of an age where, you know, I don't think I may have long, you know, right?
I would really like to see my daughter.
This is South America here, right?
And you will find Guyana down here.
There's Guyana there.
Born in Guyana, Roy David spent his working life travelling the world in the Merchant Navy.
I was 16 going 17 when I started sailing.
This is my Merchant Navy Certificate of Competency.
[chuckles] It was a more than exciting lifestyle.
I loved the sea so much.
You know, the salt air in my face.
There was so much of my soul in seafaring.
When Roy was still a teenager, his travels took him to New York, where he met a young student nurse called Sylvia.
[Roy] Sylvia was a very nice woman.
And, um...
I have very fond memories of her and good days of her.
The couple spent as much time together as possible, and it wasn't long before Sylvia discovered she was pregnant.
As a male, if you make a woman child pregnant, it was your honorable duty as a man to make her a wife.
Roy and Sylvia were married, but money was tight, so they moved in with Sylvia's mother before their daughter Cheryl was born.
[Roy] She was a lovely child.
One of my great experience of her, my first child, is, um, changing nappies for the first time, you know.
And taking her out in her pram, you know.
I felt very good as a father.
But Roy's job at sea took him away for months at a time and caused tension in the family.
When I came home, there was very ill words with myself and my mother-in-law.
She expected a lot of me.
I didn't live up to that.
Next thing you know, Sylvia said, "I think it's best you go away."
So they actually threw me out.
I didn't wanna leave, but they told me to go.
But as a young man who had a lot of pride, I gave up too easily.
I should have decided to fight for my rights as a father.
And I didn't.
Over the next five years, whenever Roy returned from sea, he went to visit his daughter, until the day she was no longer there.
[Roy] I found that they had moved.
This was like she has disappeared in thin air.
They made sure they left no trail to which I could follow.
Roy eventually settled down in England and has been married to his wife Itha for 40 years.
Thank you.
He has a son from a previous relationship and three step-children.
But he has never stopped thinking about his little girl.
[Roy] I've been looking for my daughter for a long time.
I missed her a lot.
I really and truly would like to, you know, say to her how sorry I am I was not there for her.
I should have been there.
It's eating away at me every day, every day.
I don't think I could go to my resting place with that on my conscience.
No.
[Nicky] Roy last saw his daughter in 1964, in the Bronx area of New York.
We began by searching city records, but we couldn't find any trace of Cheryl.
So we switched our focus to Roy's ex-wife Sylvia, looking for any signs of her living or possibly deceased.
We searched an American website which had records of registered graves.
And that's when we found this.
Sadly, Sylvia had died in 1991, but her grave was in New York, so we hoped the family had stayed in the city.
We broadened the search by looking for any relatives still in the city who might pass on our letter to Cheryl.
It paid off.
A few months later we received an email from a Cheryl David in New York saying that she was the person we were looking for.
We'd found Roy's daughter.
[phone dials] -Hey!
-Hey.
[chuckles] [Nicky] Cheryl is married.
She's a mother and grandmother with a large family.
How are you?
Nervous.
Shaking.
[chuckles] How did you feel when you found out that your father was looking for you?
I mean...
I haven't...
I don't even remember what he looks like basically.
So to get a dad at 64... [laughs] ...64 years old, it's... it's a new one.
So what are your memories of him?
The only memory I have, when this man came up to the steps and my god-sister said, "It's your father."
I just remember a lighter skin man.
I can't picture a face.
Can you imagine what that's like, you can't picture a face?
What did your mother tell you about him?
He wasn't spoken about.
So I just blocked it out my mind.
So tell me about my dad.
He's told us that when he came to America for the first time, he met your mother and you were born.
He wanted you and he loved you, and it was just the most fantastic feeling for him.
Oh, wow!
That's a wonderful feeling to know you were loved.
Knowing that you are loved.
So what was the reason that he left?
[Nicky] Well, he was in the Merchant Navy, so he was absent a lot.
And his mother-in-law told him that he didn't live up to expectations.
That sounds like my grandmother!
[laughing] Very strong, very strong woman.
If she decided that she wasn't gonna like you or if she didn't like you, she didn't... that was it, you're cut off.
[laughs] Well, according to Roy, both your mother and your grandmother wanted him to leave.
When he came back to the States, he tried to find you, but he was told you'd moved.
He's always regretted not staying for you and not being there for you, always.
Wow!
That's amazing.
That is really amazing.
Yeah.
I can't...
I'm speechless.
Do you have any pictures of him?
I'm going to hold it up.
Oh, my goodness!
Wow!
That's amazing.
Thank you.
To have someone to call you daughter at this point in your life, because basically after my mother died and then my grandmother died, it kind of felt like I was an orphan.
So I'm not.
[laughs] To have someone that's a parent... it's just amazing.
And did he always stay with the Merchant seaman thing?
Yeah.
He settled in England and he married his wife Itha, and they've been together for 40 years.
That's a blessing that he found love.
She had three children from previous relationships, but Roy has a son called Gerald.
I have a brother?!
I have a brother!
[laughing] Oh, my God!
Where is Gerald at?
Gerald lives in Long Island.
Oh, my goodness!
[laughs] That's... that's just a minute away.
I have a brother.
Oh, my God!
I'm still sitting here shaking.
I'm trying not to... sit here and shake, it's just wow!
Have you missed your father?
Now I do.
I'm missing him now, because I know he's there.
I can't wait to see him.
It's just an amazing, wonderful thing.
[Davina] I'm now on my way to see Roy, who spent decades longing for Cheryl.
I'm finally going to be able to give Roy the news he's been waiting for all these years.
His daughter has been found.
We've arranged to see each other at a pub near his home.

I can't talk, you know.
Were you worried she might judge you or be angry with you?
This was my main problem.
She would have said, "No, I don't want to see him."
Because my mother-in-law's words resonate in me up till today, "You did not live up to my expectations."
But when we told Cheryl what her grandmother had said to you, she said, "Oh, yes, I can imagine that."
I want to tell Cheryl that very, very sorry I wasn't there for her, you know.
Very sorry I wasn't there for her, man.
I want to know...

Well, Cheryl is so excited to have a brother because she grew up an only child.
Oh, my God!
I'm wondering now what she looks like.
-I have got a picture of her.
Would you like to see it?
-Yes.
Oh, my God, no!
Yes, this is Cheryl.
This is at her wedding, which was quite recently.
Oh, my God!
She's written you a letter.
She wrote me a letter?
"Dear Dad, knowing that you are here alive and well is for me a joyous experience.
Knowing that I was in your thoughts all these years is beyond belief and a real blessing.
Growing up I felt I would have never, ever get to see you.
Tonight for the first time in a long time I will allow myself the joy and happiness of knowing I have been loved, over years, the hope and dream of having a dad.
I cannot wait to speak to you face-to-face.
With all my love, Cheryl."
-Can I keep it?
-Yes.
Oh, my God!
What these words have done for me, money can't buy.
-Mm.
-Right.
All the tea in China can't buy it, you know.
The hole in me is slowly filling up, but I do not think it would completely seal until I could hold her, you know.
Hold her, talk with her, you know.
Feel her, you know, in my arms, you know.
Oh, my God!
Look at my child, man.
Oh, oh, boy!
Oh, my God!
[Davina] Cheryl has booked a flight to the UK to meet her father.
[Cheryl] It means the world to me.
It's one of the biggest things that's happened to me in my life.
But today, it's Roy's 87th birthday and she's going to video call him.

[Davina] Roy's newfound relationship with Cheryl has had repercussions that are starting to be felt throughout the family.
Do you think that your life would have been different if you didn't have no dad?
You mean, if I had him there in my life?
-Yeah, in your whole life.
-Yeah, I think it would have been a whole lot different.

Getting to know her dad has led Cheryl to reassess the choices she made for her eldest daughter Derisse.
[Cheryl] Families tend to perpetuate the same mistakes.
Basically what happened to me has happened to my daughter.
She didn't get to know her father.
I want for her to have the same joy and happiness that I have.
I want her to get that connection.
I want her to know her father.
[Derisse] My mom has been so happy lately.
And this has been like the best experience in her life.
And I think this is why she thinks I will be happier to find my dad.
Cheryl was 16 when she met Derisse's father.
[Cheryl] 1973 was a different time.
His name was Frank Williams.
I thought he was fun, you know.
We went out for a while, we partied together, um... and then I found out that I was having a baby.
At first he didn't want anything to do with it, and I was really hurt.
And I think he contacted me when I was about 8 months.
I told him that, no, I don't want you in my life.
Took me years to realize how I don't give people a chance.
Even though I was only 16, I guess, I did that to Frank.
With the support of her mother and grandmother, Cheryl held down two jobs and raised Derisse as a single mum.
[daughter] Hey!
Who's that?
Who's that?
She went on to have more children and has become the matriarch of a big extended family.

Cheryl now wants to tell Derisse everything she can remember about Frank.

When Derisse was two years old, Frank attempted to make contact.

He showed up to my house and the bell rings, it's in the evening.
And here's this guy standing outside, your father, saying that, "Could I at least see my daughter?"
And I said, "No."
That was the second mistake I made.

He tried to steal it out of my house.
And then he asked, "Could I just see Derisse for a minute?
Could I see her?"
And I said, "No."
At the time I felt all those decisions, decisions that I made, were correct.
Now that I'm older, I realize that... that was not the thing to do.
I mean, I really didn't give him any chance.
And again, I'm sorry.
I mean, 'cause I really never explained it, you know, explained, we never really had this conversation.

That's not-- That's admirable.
Come on!

But these revelations have made Derisse view her father in a new light.
[Derisse] My mother told me that he wanted to see me and she said, "No."
Like, okay, wow, Dad, wow, you were looking for me like that and wow.
If he felt the same way as Roy did, then I will feel bad.
Because maybe he went through a lot of feelings and a sadness.
It would be great to have a dad and be like, "Okay, I love you, Dad," and you know.
Derisse has now asked us to try and find her father.
Despite suffering from a several visual impairment, she's writing a letter to Frank in the hope that we will be able to give it to him.
[Derisse] This is gonna be daunting.
"Dear Frank, as I place pen to paper to write to you, I find it hard to capture the depth of emotion because I am writing to a man I never met before that may be my father.
I believe that family is paramount, that is why I've decided to find you."
If and when they find him, you know, this is actually gonna be put in his hand, he's gonna get a little envelope with, that say "Frank Williams" on it, they're gonna say, "This is from your daughter."
He'll be like, "Oh, my God, this is from my daughter!"
You know.
This is more from my soul, you know.
I've seen how well it went with my mom and Roy, and I'm hoping that it goes the same way.

[Nicky] We knew Derisse's father had been in the US Army, so we began by searching military records.
Unfortunately, Frank Williams is a very common name in the US, so there was no way we could contact everyone of the right age.
Investigating Frank's old addresses and acquaintances also brought nothing but dead ends.

[Davina] Roy and Cheryl have both been tested so they can meet safely.
So how are you feeling now that we're nearly there?
[laughs] I'm getting more and more jitteries, jitters now.
I guess you've been waiting a long time.
[Roy] A real long time.
It means a lot to me, Davina, a lot, a lot to me.
[Nicky] You ready for this?
[Cheryl] I'm as ready as I'm ever gonna be.
I was shaking and now I'm not shaking.
I'm super excited, yeah.
I can't wait.
What do you think the first thing you're gonna do is?
-I'm gonna hug her.
-Oh, you are?
I'm gonna hold on tight and probably don't wanna let go.
[Davina] I'm gonna leave you here, okay?
[Roy] Yes.
-[strains] -There you go.
-Davina, thank you very much.
-Good luck.
-Thank you.
-You take care.
[Roy] Okay.
Thank you, Davina.
Thank you very much, thank you.
Well, it's gonna be just in here that you meet him, so not long now.
-Almost there, almost there.
-Yeah.
-Good luck.
-Thank you.
I'm gonna miss you.
But...
I'm off.
[laughs] [laughing] -You don't have to get up, stay were you are.
-I have to.
Stay where you are.
Oh, my God!
Oh... 50-odd years...
Sit near to me.
Sit near to me, darling.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
[sighs] -How are you?
-I'm good.
-I'm good.
How are you?
-I hardly sleep last night.
I didn't sleep at all last night.
You kept beautiful over the years, you know, beautiful.
-Thank you.
-But the only thing is... -What?
-...you look more like me.
-[laughs] -I love you so much.
Ah, yes.
All right, so I'm just gonna bask in this for a moment.
-God!
-Oh, my God!
I was on cloud nine.
And I feel like I was walking in space.
The moment was so great that, you know, that I just couldn't hold back, you know.
I just couldn't hold back.
Is this really happening?
[laughs] I ask myself, is this happening in truth?
Because at one time I said to myself, I said, "I'm in my late eighties now," I said, you know, "I'm going down," I said, "Will I find my first child?"
And my wife said, "Roy, keep on looking, keep on fighting, you'll find her."
And in the end... this is what happened.
When they told me you were looking for me and how long you was looking for me, you don't have no idea how that made me feel.
It made me feel like... to know that I was wanted.
I'll tell you something, this is not only my Christmas present, birthday present and all the presents I've been looking forward to all my life.
Oh, my God, girl.
Cheryl, this is the starting of something new.
-Yes.
-We're starting... Mwah!
Oh, God, child!
Oh, God!
[Cheryl] I was just laying on him, I could just stay like that for the whole night.
Like I'm a little girl and I got my daddy.
It was just the most amazing moment of my life.
I'm sorry very much for the years that I missed you growing up.
I missed you being there and I being there also.
I missed it very much.
Very, very sorry, Cheryl.
Thank you for the apology, but as I told you, -we're moving forward now, eh?
-Yeah, okay.
We're gonna move forward and we're gonna be together a lot now.
-Okay, Cheryl.
Okay.
-A lot.
It make me a new man, yes.
A real new man.
That guilt has lifted.
My life is completed.
I love you.
I don't wanna get makeup all over your nice suit, Dad.
I don't care about it, you know.
I'll send it to the cleaners.
[Cheryl] To have someone call you "daughter," it's changed, changed something inside of me.
And it's like you get exposed to the sun and you're like a flower and you just open up.
And... it's glorious.
That's all, it's just glorious.
[laughs] Oh, I've got something to give you.
Oh, my God, no!
That's you and Gerald.
Right.
And that's the Manhattan skyline.
Yeah, I know.
My God!
Ooh!
[laughing] -You both look like me, you know that?
-[laughing] You both look like me, right.
-You look beautiful, beautiful.
-Thank you.
And you have brought my granddaughter with you?
-Yes.
-My, oh, my, I'm dying to meet her.
My eldest grandchild too?
Oh, my God!
I couldn't ask for more.
I couldn't ask for more.
[Derisse] Pop-Pop!
Oh, my... Don't get up, don't get up.
Oh!
[laughing] -Granddaughter!
Oh, my God.
-Mm!
Cheryl?
Oh, darling.
[Cheryl] We're all together now.
Don't fall.
Hello, look at you, Pop-Pop.
I'm gonna call you Pop-Pop, is good I think.
Pop-Pop good?
-Look!
Good Lord have mercy.
-[laughs] I hope myself and my daughter and all of my grandchildren, I hope we can go a long way, a very, very long way.
I know I cannot make up for 50-odd years, but I will try my best, and I'll do my best with what I have now.
Because what I have now, I waited a long time to get it.
And I'm gonna keep it.
Thank you.
Thank you.
-I love you, Granddad.
-[Roy laughing] [peaceful music playing]
