But when it comes to creating their daughter's nursery, they're overwhelmed and they're at a standstill.
So, hopefully, with our help, we can get them back on track today on "Baby Makes 3."

-That moment when you go from couple to family, everything changes.
When you bring the baby home, you want to create a warm, comfortable, and safe environment for them.
Step one -- the nursery.
-Well, my name is Jenn.
-And I'm LeVaughn.
And we're having our first child.
-Our first baby.
-Uh, Victoria.
-Victoria Marie.
-I'm from Philadelphia, big city.
I guess I was always, like, a science geek [ Laughs ] 'cause I've always been in, like, different programs where I'm doing something scientific, something dealing with engineering or something like that.
I have my PhD in behavioral neuroscience.
And now I'm doing a post-doc at Duke University.
-Well, I came out of, uh, Detroit.
Did a couple years in technical school to become a graphic designer.
We met online.
She reached out to me.
No, I'm just kidding.
-No.
Yeah, no.
-I actually reached out to her.
-[ Laughs ] Get it right.
[ Both laugh ] We love having get-togethers and stuff with the family.
You know, we're a really close-knit family.
-We were married, looking at about a year, over a year, and she was actually staring at being done... -Mm-hmm.
-...getting her PhD.
And the, of course, I guess, with any kind of -- with newbies -- newbie -- or newlyweds [Chuckles] the conversation, I guess, will typically come up, "Well, when are we gonna look at starting a family?"
And, of course, being the scientist, you know, her biggest concern was, "Well, sometimes these days, it takes a lot longer.
And, you know, it might take a year.
It could take a few months."
-Literally, a month later, like, I just couldn't eat something.
So he was like... -I would tell her.
-..."You might be pregnant."
-I was like, "You might be pregnant."
-I was like, "No, that's not the case.
It's too soon."
-I'm like, "I know you."
-You were like, "You love this."
-You love this.
-Well, my thought behind for "Baby Makes 3," it was just more of, like, I know I might have, like, so many ideas, but then having a designer to actually hone in and then just, like, create something that's, like, "Wow, this is very beautiful."
-Remember, I'm a graphic designer.
Nowhere near -- Not an interior designer at all.
-So we have 7 weeks left.
-Whoa.
Yeah, 7 weeks.
Wow.
-Why'd you just get scared?
-I didn't get scared.
I was like, "Whoa."
-He's just like, "Whoa, really?"
-I mean, whoa, as in that's not -- -Like, you were here for this whole entire -- entire time.
-That's not far away.
-Yes.
[ Laughs ] -I'm Melissa Lozoff.
And today, we're here to meet our couple for the first time.

-Jenn and LeVaughn are living in a modern and spacious three-bedroom home.
It has numerous architectural details that young families are often expecting.
Our nursery is located upstairs.
Yes, that's right.
That's right.
The sound I'm hearing.
-Well, here is our nursery.
-Oh, this is a nice sized room.
-Yeah.
-This is great.
And I see you already have a crib with a changing station attached.
That's very functional.
-Yes.
-Yes.
-Saves room.
Smart.
-Exactly what we wanted.
-I know, 'cause -- -Something that saves room.
-Pick the baby up.
Put her right there.
-I know, right there.
-Yes, ma'am.
-That's right.
-Have the drawers there.
And, like, all right.
This is what we need to do.
-Right, and this has a lot of light, beautiful big window.
-Yes.
The window, yes -- One of my favorite things about the room is having an actual window and, you know, get to see the trees in the woods and stuff.
-Trees.
Yeah, it's very calming.
-And we also have a walk-in closet for her.
-Yeah, I guess part of the struggles is of us trying to figure out exactly what we want to do... -Yeah.
-...you know, with the nursery.
So, it's been -- -I think after looking online and seeing, like, different nurseries... -Yeah.
-...I was, like, peach and gold sounds beautiful.
-Oh.
-And, like, we're trying to go for more of, like, an elegant, antique-y.
-Ah.
-Right.
-Not too princess-y, but it's got -- -More queen.
-Yes.
Yes.

-Well, yeah.
Right, right.
-Elegant queen.
We can make something really unique and different... -Mm-hmm.
-Mm-hmm.
-...rather than just your pink.
Right?
-Yes, yes.
-So you came up with those colors.
Anything else that you thought about that you wanted in here?
-Well, I think the biggest thing we both want to do is try to do something, you know, have something that'll grow with her.
-Yeah, so it won't be, like, something, like, when she turns three, where we're like, "Okay, now we need to get all new furniture."
-Yeah.
-Everything has to be changed.
-Right, exactly.
-Not baby-ish.
-Yes.
Exactly.
-Not baby-ish.
Right, right.
-That's the plan.
-And is that as far as you got, or are there other ideas that you wanted?
-Initials or some type of lettering.
-Of the baby's initials?
Yeah.
-Mm-hmm.
-Some kind of lettering, so.
-So I can be like, "This is her room."
Yes.
-Ah.
And you two are very family-oriented.
-Extremely.
-So you want -- Do you want to incorporate, like, family photos or something like that in the room?
-Yeah, that would be nice.
Could we do, like, photos and... -Yeah.
-...just kind of, like, make the room homey, too.
-Yeah.
-Yeah.
-...since this is gonna be the room we pretty much probably gonna be in for a while.
-A while.
-Yes, that's right.
So, you both have come up with a color scheme and a little bit of this style, but you got stumped.
So what we're gonna do is we're gonna take your ideas, but we're gonna add to them and create a nursery that you're gonna love, all right?
-Yeah.
-Yeah.
That sounds great.
-We are meeting our designer, Lauren, at a local fabric shop.
And this is House of Fabric.
Isn't it beautiful?
-Ooh, this is nice.
-Wow.
-Well, come on in.
And we'll see Lauren and lots of fabric right this way.

-This is really pretty.
-So, Melissa sent over the dimensions of your space.
-Mm-hmm.
-And I got a little bit of a feel for what you're going for.
-Um, but can you tell -- just describe it a little bit more?
-I just didn't want the cookie-cutter princess with, like, crowns or anything like that.
-Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
-Just more of, ah, as you go into the space, and you're like, "Now this is -- this is it."
-Mm-hmm.
-Like, I want her room.
That type of vibe.
-Well, you probably recognize this.
This is your crib.
-Yes.
Yes.
-And then laid it out with everything just so you can kind of see the overall design scheme.
The crib or bed in any space really becomes the focal point of the space.
-Mm-hmm.
-And so this will go on the long wall in the room.
And behind it, to accent that wall, I'd love to do a striped treatment.
Now, this is shown in just slightly different colors with one color being done in a higher sheen or a high-gloss finish.
-Mm-hmm.
-So it really adds a lot of elegance to the space.
-Mm.
-Above everything, I'd love to hang a really nice kind of crystal chandelier.
-Wow.
-That's really pretty.
-Yeah.
That is really nice.
-Thanks.
-I like that idea.
-Yeah.
-Good.
And on the floor, an elegant rug.
This actually almost has a look of lace.
-Yes.
I was just thinking about my wedding dress 'cause it was lace, too.
-Yeah.
-So I'm like, "Yay.
She's gonna have fun with that."
-So, beside the crib, we'll do this glider.
This is actually slip-covered, so -- -Okay.
-Should baby spit up or anything, it'll be really cleanable for you.
-Okay.
-All right.
-And then to pull in a little bit of gold, we have this gold ottoman.
-Oh.
Fancy.
-Mm.
-And then I know it was important to you to personalize the space, so I found this beautiful peach pillow with a V on it for her name.
-Aww!
-Awesome.
Yeah.
-I really do like that.
-Yeah.
That is really nice.
-Okay.
Good.

-This is looking good.

Above the crib, there will be a canopy of fabric hanging down from a cornice.
-Mm-hmm.
-That's gonna add a lot of elegance and really just establish a focal point in the space.
To the left and right of that, I'd love to do some word art.
-Okay.
-Great.
-That's pretty.
-These finishes show the scheme for the space.
And so, you know, your crib is already in this dark, espresso wood.
And then I'd love to bring other furniture in, in a white finish... -Okay.
-...just to provide a brightness to the space.
-Mm-hmm.
-And then for the wall color, we talked about doing a really light peach... -Mm-hmm.
-...that will be really girly, really soft, really elegant.
-And then bringing in accents of gold for, again, that touch of elegance.
On the left wall from the crib, we'll do a dresser with a very elegant, beautiful mirror hung above it.
And then to accent that, I'd love to hang some metallic gold butterflies kind of scattered on the wall.
-Oh.
-Oh.
That's gonna be pretty.
-Wow.
-Yeah.
She's -- I'm gonna want her room.
-So I also believe storage was a really important thing to you, right?
-Yes, definitely.
-Okay.
So, we have a couple ways we want to incorporate that.
The first is with a toy box in the room.
-Okay.
-To go in the room.
-Okay.
-So for even more storage, we have an armoire.
Love to do some gold polka-dots on the inside of it and then hang some gold bow hooks on the outside edge, and then even add a mirror to the door so that... -Oh, wow.
-...it can serve as that kind of fun dress-up area for your daughter.
-Mm-hmm.
-You see -- -When do we get started?
-Yeah.
We got everything together, so we're ready.
-Oh, good.
Well, I think the last thing we need to select are the fabrics for the canopy over the crib and the draperies.
-Okay.
-Okay.
-Okay?
-All right.
Sounds like a good idea.
-Good.
-Ready to look at some fabric?
-Yes.
-Yes, ready.
♪♪ -I'm Ruby, and the name of our shop is House of Fabrics and Design.
And we've been here for a year.
In the fabric industry, I have worked for about 20 years.
Fabrics are very interesting.
The creative side of you, it brings it out.
For a young family that's on a budget, and you want to do something that's unique, selecting fabric is a great way of showing expression.
And a young couple just starting out should not be afraid to venture out and do something on a custom scale because you're pleased with it.
It's your dream.
And you're trying to suit your environment.
And I think it would just make you happy when you can think about something that's going to bring a smile to your child's life.
-Hey, guys.
-Ah.
They are back.
-Yeah.
We're back.
-Yes.
-Hey!
-You have some choices.
-Yes.
-We got some choices.
-Great.
-What'd you find?
-We were trying not to come back with the entire store.
-Yeah, we were like, "Okay.
Let's get something that's close to what we're supposed to get.
-Right.
-This is for Victoria, not for us.
Um... -This is everything, so hopefully some of these will work for it.
-Yeah.
-Yeah, I think so.
Well, looking at the selection here, I feel like these two feel a little bit dark for the room, overall.
-Mm-hmm.
Okay.
-You know, we're going with a really light wall color, so I think it'd be nice to keep things kind of light and airy.
-Yeah.
-Okay.
-I could see a sheer for the canopy fabric, but this texture is just really neat.
-Yeah.
-Mm-hmm.
-I just loved this.
-Yeah.
-It just looks beautiful.
-Yeah.
-It has a little gold.
-Yeah.
-Right.
It's almost, like, a little metallic.
-Yeah.
Metallic.
-Really shiny.
Yeah.
-Yeah.
I like the sheen.
Yeah.

-Great.
-And then I see this pattern fabric, which is nice, but it feels just a little bit more orange than peach.
-Mm-hmm.
-But actually, this would be great for the window treatments and the cornice.
-And it's -- Yeah.
And it's pink, so -- -Oh, wow.
Yeah.
-It almost matches perfectly.
Yeah.
-Oh, that's great.
-And these two together just seems like it would work very well.
-Yeah.
-Yeah.
-Beautiful.

I will talk to Ruby, the store owner, and I will put in an order, and we'll get that fabric for you.

[ Chuckles ] -With our fabric on the way, it's time to prep our room for paint.
♪♪ -We are painting our room in a two-tone variation of a soft peach shade.
We're using a zero-VOC paint, which doesn't have that paint smell and is safest for baby.
Our back wall will include our stripes.
But to create the effect we want, we'll do our base coat first and let it dry.
♪ Right now, Jenn and I are starting a new project.
All right, Jenn.
I found this really simple yet beautiful armoire... -Mm-hmm.
-...to put in the room.
But we want to jazz it up.
-Okay.
-We want to decorate it.
-All right.
-So this is gonna be a fun project.
-All right.
-So, a really inexpensive way to decorate a piece of furniture or walls... -Mm-hmm.
-...are these beautiful, little decals.
And they're simple.
They go on easily.
And if you don't get them on right, you can peel 'em off and put them somewhere else.
-Okay.
-So, we've got these gold dots that'll go with your elegant theme, right?
-Peach and gold, yes.
-Yes.
Gold is good.
Okay.
I want to put it in a pattern.
-Okay.
-So, I've already done five just to make sure it looks good, And then you bring it down here so you can eyeball it.
But you see each corner here is in the middle.
-Okay.
-So you make a dot there and there.
Then I'm gonna bring it down like that... -Oh, I see what we're doing.
-...and make two more dots.
Do it with pencil so you can erase it if it doesn't work.
Okay.
And then we pull it away.
And then you just want to make a dot right in the middle.
So now that we have these dots, you'll put the stickers on each one of these dots right here so we can put the die pattern.
And then we're gonna do this side, this side and this side, so all three sides inside.
-Okay.
-Okay?
-That works.
-We've got plenty of these.
So you getting nervous?
-Yes.
-I am nervous because I haven't even changed a diaper yet.
-Ah.
Don't worry, though.
You will be changing a lot of them.
-A lot of them.
-You will get good at that.
And you -- Yep.
Perfect.

This looks really good.
-I know.
I really love this.

-And last one.
That whole side is done.
-Yes.

-And it was pretty easy, hmm?

-So, you'll just put your board up here and mark those and then add the decals.

-In preparation for painting our stripes, Sven and LeVaughn have taped a stripe pattern on the wall.
-Pull it up and snap it.
-Sven measured the wall from floor to ceiling, marking the width of the stripes we wanted.
Then he and LeVaughn used a chalk line, an inexpensive tool you can find at your local hardware store, to ensure these lines are straight.
-All right.
Hold it tight.
-We're using awhile chalk because it's easy to erase.
Then it's just a matter of taping it all off.
-Just walk it down.
-Sven, this looks incredible.
You work fast.
-Thank you.
-I love this peach color.
It's bright, but it's also really soothing for the baby.
-Yes.
-It looks beautiful.
And this stripe, the stripes that we're creating, they're no-VOC paint.
-Zero VOC.
Correct.
-Good.
Very good.
And I love the two-tone effect.
I see, obviously, that you used a couple shades darker in the peach, but can you give us more tips about how to create the effect?
-Sure.
With the effect here, we want to use a semi-gloss versus a low sheen or a matte finish so that their contrasting stripes really pop out.
-Yeah.
-But still subtle.
Really opens up the room.
-Yeah.
I love the stripes because they do really open up the room.
They're beautiful.
So how long does it take for the paint to dry before we can pull this tape?
-Well, we need to do two coats, so after the first coat, wait about an hour.
-Okay.
-And then we can do the second coat.
Another hour, and then you can peel the tape.
-Okay.
-And voilà.
-So today, we're gonna build a cornice to go over your crib that'll hang the drapery canopy.
-All right.
And then when you say the cornice, it's -- so it's going on -- over it then is what you're saying?
Or...?
-It is.
It's going to go up on the wall over the crib.
-I see.
Okay.
-And similar to a canopy bed, it will have the curtain draping down from it on the other side.
-Oh, awesome.
Oh, yeah.
-Yeah.
It's beautiful.
-She's gonna love that.

-Yeah.
It's gonna look really nice.
The dimensions on that are 36 inches wide by 8 inches deep and 12 inches tall.
So the first thing we're gonna do is go ahead and cut two 12-inch-wide strips.
-Okay.
-And then we'll take those down to our second cut.
♪♪ When we're cutting our lumber, there's a couple of things we want to make sure to do.
One is to set the proper depth on our saw.
Just make sure that when we set our depth that we're just about an inch into our wood.
-All right.
I see.
Perfect.
Nicely done.
-All right.
-Really?
I did all right?
-You did great.
Did great.
-All right.
-Now we're going to take our two rough-linked pieces of lumber.
We're gonna cut this one down to 36 inches, which is our face panel.
-Okay.
-And we're gonna cut two 8-inch sections out of that one for our sides.
-All right.
It's coming together.
-Yes, it is.
Yes, it is.
♪♪ -Lauren's design plan calls for an arc at the bottom of the face of the cornice.
-Okay.
-Curves can be a little tricky sometimes, but lucky for us, the back of your crib already has a curved profile to it.
-Mm-hmm.
-So we're just gonna clamp on, trace our line and use a really fast, easy trick to make that curve not so bad.
♪ And the last thing we're going to do is take an orbital sander and just polish these edges just a little bit.
-Okay.
-And we're ready to upholster.
That's good.
Excellent.
-How's that look?
-Beautiful.
-So Jenn, this is the door to the armoire.
And this is one of the other projects that I wanted to do to jazz it up.
-Mm-hmm.
-So now what we want to do -- We're gonna take this really pretty, decorative trim, and we're gonna put it around the mirror.
-All right.
-Okay.
Now gently put that in place.
It won't burn you, but it is warm.
So just be careful when you're using -- Yeah.
When you're using it, you just want to be a little bit careful.
And just hold it there for a second.
It doesn't take very long to dry.
-Hey.
This is a very good idea.
I wouldn't have thought, like, oh.
I would've, like, "Can I just pre-buy it?"
-That -- and that's the thing, too, that I really love is you can't really pre-buy... -Yeah.
-...these kind of really interesting pieces.
You have to kind of create it, come up with it and create it.
-Yeah.
-And when your daughter's a little older, you can -- the two of you can change it out and do another craft project.
-It personalizes it.
-Yeah.
It personalizes the room.
It makes it unique.
I don't think anyone else can have a room like hers, right?
-Exactly.
-All right, LeVaughn.
We ready to put together the cornice?
-Let's go ahead.
So, yeah.
Let's go ahead and finish it up.
Yeah.
-Okay.
So, we've got our pieces cut.
We have pre-marked a few points on our end side boards.
We're going to pre-drill these holes first so that when we screw in our wood screws, we don't split the wood.
Once we get those drilled, the box is essentially going to assemble with a frame inside of it.
-I see.
Okay.
-And then we will be ready.
♪♪ -Well, I know you two are very family-oriented, so I wanted to create a really special project that kind of highlights that for your daughter.
-Okay.
Okay -So what better way than with lights?
-Okay.
-Oh.
-So I've -- I have this shadowbox, and we're gonna turn it into a lit family collage.
-Ooh.

-Yeah.
It's gonna look really good.
So, I'm thinking that we want to pick out really four special photos to go around.
