It's truly a fantastic piece.
One of the best pieces I've seen on this show.
GUEST: Thank you.
[Music] NARRATOR: Have you found yourself watching a vintage or special episode of Antiques Roadshow, guessing along with whether the appraisals have gone up, down or stay the same?
GUEST: Well, of course I'm curious.
NARRATOR: How we get the answer is simple.
We consult our experts directly before airing the new values.
GUEST: Her market has has been doing very well recently.
NARRATOR: Prices in the antiques market are impacted by a range of factors.
APPRAISER: So that may affect the value.
NARRATOR: The first might be obvious.
Discretionary income.
If the economy is good, so is the market.
APPRAISER: They've come down a little bit because of the economy that we're in.
NARRATOR: We recently spoke with longtime Antiques Roadshow appraiser and market expert Lark Mason.
NARRATOR: He told us... APPRAISER: In order to own something, you have to have the funds to buy it.
So we're limited by what we can afford.
NARRATOR: The second factor is shifting generational taste.
APPRAISER: You know, look at the number of Comic Con conventions that are taking place around the country.
Nothing like that existed, really.
Just a generation ago.
The kids that are just starting to think about this, they're going to have a whole different range of experiences that mean something to them.
So a percentage of people will always be looking back at, admiring Georgian furniture or Renaissance design or whatever it happens to be.
But it's not a as much of a trend as in prior generations.
NARRATOR: The third factor is the creation of online markets.
GUEST: I tried to look it up online and I saw a wide range.
NARRATOR: One example of this is books.
APPRAISER: And we've discovered that something that we previously thought was really rare, let's say a first edition book, isn't nearly as rare as we thought because it was just in short supply in Phoenix, Arizona, but it was not in short supply if you were in New York City.
NARRATOR: The fourth factor actually has its pros and cons.
As certain markets go down with the decrease of buyers from older generations, new markets are created by younger buyers with fresh appetites.
Thus, driving more opportunities for emerging trends.
GUEST: I think I'm going to be rich.
APPRAISER: The generation coming up, they're going to have a whole different range of experiences that mean something to them and it's very difficult to know what are going to be the items that drive their interest at a young age.
Then, as they mature and they grow older and they have the resources, they take that next step.
