Nine, gonna shine, life is good I'm doing fine.
Ten, Gonna do it right then do it again.
Yeah yeah.
I look up to the sky with all the beautiful color but, there's more than just for me so gonna share it with another.
I got to show, to give, let out, I want to sing and shout.
Take a look and see A beautiful morning that turns into beautiful evening.
And together make a beautiful life.
And if you want see, then come along with me.
That's right.
Welcome to Experience Michiana and I'm the show's producer, Kelsey Zumbrun.
Thank you so much for being with us.
We're really enjoying the summer and the beautiful weather and there's just so much to do in Michiana And this week, we're going to feature some great activities, but they're also great causes.
And so we're going to head down to Nappanee, to the Neighbors Mercantile Company.
And they're celebrating one year in business.
And it's going to mean a party, Right?
So live music, free food, but it's also this really cool shop.
And Courtney and Dave got to go in and meet the owners and experience the neighbors Mercantile there in Nappanee.
We're going to head to Goshen to talk about the car and motorcycle for a cause auto show.
And this is a really cool event and it's going to feature a lot of cool, classic cars and motorcycles and music and food.
And while you're there, it also means you're supporting Bashor children's home, who does so much for our area as far as helping our kids, those kids who really need some help.
And so it's a chance to give back while enjoying a great day of cars and motorcycles.
But first, we're headed over to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Michigan.
And the reason we're doing that is we wanted to experience volunteering in Michiana And there are so many nonprofit organizations that do so much for us and give back to us in our time of needs.
But how do we go out and experience volunteering for them?
What does that mean?
What what do you do for that organization if you volunteer?
And so Dave had a chance to sit down with the CEO of the Ronald McDonald House Charities here in Michiana to find out what does it mean, How do we give back and how do we volunteer Michiana?
So I am here at the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Michiana with Kiersten who is the chief executive officer.
And you've been here right from the start, almost right since 18 2018.
So and this organization does amazing things, help so many people.
And we want to find out about it because on Experience Michiana, normally we go out and we experience a lot of fun things.
But I also want to find out ways that we can experience volunteering, experience, giving back to people because I think giving to others is the best gift that you'll ever receive.
So that's why I'm here with Kirsten.
So.
Kirsten, tell me first a little bit about the organization and what exactly you do.
Yes, our mission is very simple.
In my opinion.
We we take care of families of hospitalized children ages 21 and younger.
So whether you're 18 year old is injured due to an accident or your newborn is in the nicu are we take care of those families.
So we like to think of it as the hospital takes care of the child while we take care of the families and provide all the amenities they could possibly need.
And you have a skyway that goes right between the main hospital and here.
So people are never they're never far away.
They're never far away.
And they never have to travel in the inclement weather that unfortunately, we have here in the Michiana area where it could snow on May 1st like it did this year, or it could be 90 degrees in November.
So we're really grateful that we're able to have an enclosed walkway for them.
And we love to, you know, share the fact that they are truly steps away from their child and all at no cost to them.
And, you know, we we do have one of the best nicu units in the entire area in all of northern Indiana.
So it does get used a lot because of the expertise that we have there at Memorial.
So that means, as you said, it could be an 18 year old or a newborn.
But I'm sure you guys are serving a lot of people.
We are.
Yeah.
We serve hundreds of families a year and this year alone, we've actually already served through the month of May over 7000 meals to individuals.
So we actually have a new program now called Lunches with Love that actually was born out of the pandemic, where we now will take the lunches over to the hematology oncology floor because it's more of an outpatient unit.
And we didn't realize that they weren't able to come over to our side to actually get a meal.
So now we serve them on the hospital side, and we're just so grateful that families are coming in to actually dine with us and that we're able to, you know, feed as many individuals as we can.
Again, all at no cost to them, which is the best part.
So what are the big barriers that you're breaking down?
Because like, what would people have to do around McDonald House wasn't here.
They would have to pay an unfortunate amount of money for lodging and food.
And, you know, maybe they forgot their toothbrush because in the moment of an emergency, when your child is sick in the middle of the night, you're not thinking about grabbing your toothbrush.
You're not thinking about grabbing your wallet half the time or even your cell phone.
So the fact that we're able to provide those those little amenities, those those tiny things that you wouldn't think are a big deal until you go without.
So the fact that we're able to have those here stocked and ready and to consider this a home away from home for them is the most important thing to us.
But of course, on top of that, you know, your kid, all of a sudden is in the emergency room.
You've to stay close by for five days.
And ordinarily that might cost you over $1,000 on a hotel.
Oh, absolutely.
You know, and you're not right by the hospital.
Then you're a couple of miles away, which seems very far to someone whose child is in intensive care and some unit.
So to have it, it's really peace of mind to that when they come here, they can also get a little bit of a rest.
Yes.
In between seeing their loved ones.
So, yes, they do.
And and think about it for even around here with Notre Dame weekend, you know, sometimes there's a three night minimum the whole football game weekend.
So if you can afford it.
If you can if you can afford it.
Yeah.
And your child isn't hospitalized.
You don't have all these hospital hospital bills coming your way and things like that.
So we want the families to have to worry about the least amount of things.
And so the fact that we're able to take that cost burden off of them is huge.
And as you said, they're able to come and relax.
We have two queen sized beds in each of our 20 bedrooms, all with its own bathroom.
So they have this en suite that they can come and just kind of step away for a second, because the best medicine for a child is always the parent and they can step away without leaving.
Yes, absolutely.
Because they're still here.
Yeah, it's connected.
We've all been to the hospital, right?
Whether you're the one that's hospitalized or you're visiting a loved one and, you know, having a park in the parking garage or even in the parking lot and kind of navigate the hospital can sometimes be tough.
And, you know, they have to serve a ton of people.
And that's why they have such vast resources and so many parking spots and things.
So let's let them think about one less thing and just walk over the skyway Bridge with just themselves.
All right.
So obviously, it's a great mission.
People can get involved.
There's something very simple that they can do and start doing at home because you have a big event coming up at the end of the month and what's the name of it.
So we're doing a pop tab palooza with our amazing partners over at United Federal Credit Union.
And on June 29th, we're going to have a pop tap drive through.
So for anyone that's been collecting pop tabs for us off of either pop cans or maybe other beverage type cans, you can come and donate those pop tabs to us.
And we actually recycle those with omni source here in town, which is also partnering with us.
And we're so grateful for their partnership and they're going to actually weigh that for us.
And then they will cut us a check for that pure aluminum that's in the pop tabs.
So it's not the pop can.
It's just the pop tab, because that's the pure aluminum part.
So we're really excited.
A lot of Ronald McDonald House is across the nation do things like this and this is our first one here in the community and we're really excited to host it because, of course, all these facilities to offer free of charge to the families, but not without cost.
So you got to find ways to fundraise.
So where can people drop them off?
So at the United Federal Credit Union branch in Edison Parkway, Edison Lakes Parkway, I should say.
So, yeah.
And that will be from 11 to 3.
So, yeah, come on out.
And it's going to be literally a drive thru so you don't even have to get out of your car.
Me and a few of our staff members will be there.
We'll have some volunteers there.
We're going to try to make it a fun day.
Hopefully it'll be a beautiful day and we can celebrate all things Ronald McDonald House so we can keep this place at no cost for families.
How can people actually can they volunteer?
Can they come in?
Absolutely.
Yeah.
So we actually this place is run off of about 200 volunteers and we truly would not be able to keep their doors open without being on the backs of these volunteers.
They keep our house pristine.
They are organizing constantly.
They're really, truly making this this house a home.
And we could not do it without them.
So we offer volunteer shifts starting at 9 a.m. all the way to 9 p.m. in three hour increments.
And that is Sunday through Saturday because we're a 24 seven facility bringing in 65 days a year and you can sign up for one of those shifts and or you could just do kind of some one offs so you could come in as a weekend volunteer, you could come in and just cook a meal for us or with us.
So we have a beautiful kitchen upstairs.
You do that, you can come and cook in and you can actually make it a team building experience with, you know, your team at your company.
You can come in with your own family and you could do something as a give back.
Maybe on a Sunday.
You can do all sorts of different things with us, volunteer voluntarily, so our website's the best place to check out the different opportunities we have, which is RMHC Michiana dot org.
And you can usually find what you need there and or our numbers on our website or you can call us directly.
And we just always want to find a really good fit for the volunteer and what the volunteers passionate about.
So if cooking's your thing, we're going to get you in the kitchen.
If organizing anything, you're like me, then we're not going to put you in the kitchen.
The families are going through enough without experiencing that we don't need food poisoning.
What better, though, than volunteering and walking alongside these families when they're going through something that's really horrendous on them?
You know, So, I mean, if their kids are in here, it's not a good experience for them.
So you bringing your light and your heart and your skills in to help them is wonderful.
Yeah, absolutely.
It is a very feel good opportunity.
And our coffee cart's another big program that we have here.
So that actually goes over to Beacon Children's Hospital, 2 to 3 units over there Monday through Friday, around 10 a.m.. And we serve.
So basically we take our our coffee and our snacks and different activities for the kids, and we actually take it over there as a mobile unit to serve the children.
And that's a really, really feel good experience that people usually love and walk away just feeling so fulfilled because you've really done something good for someone else.
So that's another program we have.
All right.
So we're trying our best to encourage our audience to get out and experience local nonprofits, whether it's volunteering, somehow giving back whatever it is, because we're so lucky to have all of these organizations here.
So why don't you find out more find out more about the Ronald McDonald House charities RMHC Michiana dot org.
Well, today we are in Nappanee, Indiana.
Downtown, there's a wonderful space called Neighbors Mercantile.
And we are here.
And I've already been shopping for a while, but I have one of the owners with us.
Marcus, thanks so much for joining us today.
Thank you.
This is a beautiful space and this is not what it was just a year ago.
Really?
Well, it a number of years ago, it was a hardware store for for many years.
Martin's Hardware there sat empty.
For eight years it was empty, empty building.
And our Roastery Coffee Roasters across the street.
My office is across the street.
Okay, so you had that space, too?
Yes.
And so I would come out the street and see this big empty building here.
And my wife, Debra, and I would talk about how somebody should do something with the building.
Right.
Because we we don't like seeing empty buildings here.
And it's always somebody and then it ends up being so.
Well, that was our we were wishing someone would do something.
Finally we said, Well, maybe we should do something.
Yeah.
So?
So we actually bought the building in the summer of 2019 and started renovation kind of dreaming in 2020.
Well, you know, COVID hit every turn of that process.
Did you even know what you were going to do with it?
Yes.
So we had a dream of we want it.
We knew we wanted more retail space in Nappanee to just offer more, more options, retail options.
So that was our main goal.
I had always had a dream I grew.
I grew up here in Nappanee and there were a couple of little dime stores and you know, those types of things where as a kid I'd walk in and see little bins, toys and candy and stuff, and that's kind of the feel I wanted.
Yeah.
So that was kind of the the, the initial vision was to have an old timey feel to the place and with with, you know, the hardware, original hardwood floors.
I mean, you get the creaking floor, you walk by, you get the brick, the brick.
So, so yeah, we so yeah, we bought the bought the building from used to be a hardware store and did a total renovation.
Took us two and a half years and so we opened up last summer almost a year ago last summer in June.
So you're rolling into one year being in space.
How's it been for you guys?
It's been, it's been great.
Yeah, it's we've learned a lot.
We're still learning.
I'm sure we will continue to learn, but we had a great year last year.
The partial year was great, wonderful traffic and sales through the end of the year.
It's a little bit slow after the beginning of this year, which we we noticed that, you know retail's sure we're sure, but it's starting to pick up again with summer summer coming on.
So now why do people come to a mercantile?
Well, they come for the shopping carts, I guess.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Part of it is I like to think for here one of the things that that Deborah and I are passionate about is creating space, creating a, well, welcoming space and atmosphere.
And that was part of what we wanted was to have that welcoming feel where people feel like ownership or, you know, just Sure, a welcoming feeling here.
So hopefully that's part of it.
That's what brings them back, hopefully.
Yeah.
There's all of our our products are there's, there's a wide range of products There is.
Can we check out some of those?
Okay.
So I've already been checking out a few things.
Of course.
Here's my buddy Dave.
Oh, okay.
Hey, Dave, I love this because you walk straight in the door.
There's a chair here because I don't like shopping, but my wife loves shop.
There you go.
Although your respite, although that was the intention, was that.
Yeah.
So I have this because my wife is your first baby on June 17th.
So I'm hoping that I get my first Father's Day in.
There you go this year, and they'll have to wait a whole 12 months.
But, you know, normally when you come into these stores, they're kind of a more at women.
Oh, sure, Sure.
I'm aware of the home goods that you get.
Yeah.
So we have a wide variety.
Don't.
Yes, yes.
That's why I like it here.
There's like straight away there's a bunch of men's stuff.
So I'm going to actually go around and this is scented for men.
Yeah, I need that.
I need that.
But I'm going to go around.
I know there's a couple of places around here.
You even have a man cave upstairs.
Yeah, right.
Yeah.
All right, there.
That's.
That's really where you need to sit, is it?
Okay, let's go.
Head on.
All right.
Okay, cool.
Thanks, Marcus.
We're upstairs, and the first thing you see is this RV.
How in the heck did you get it onto a second floor?
Well, that's exactly what I wanted people the reaction to be okay when they walk up the stairs and see this.
The short answer is we took it apart piece by piece and brought and rebuild it here.
Okay.
So but yeah, it was it was an actual 1979 Newmar Country Air fifth wheel and we purchased it.
It's actually shorter than the original.
Okay, so they shorten it up and down a little bit.
This end is we turn into a kids kind of a kids area play area inside goes back.
I'm talking about, you know, this is really being a community space for.
Yes.
Yes.
And want people to feel welcome and enjoy being here.
Toy section is is behind the camper here on this side.
So these have a little place to play.
Yes.
while parents are shopping.
That's the idea.
And I know we were saying as we were walking up the steps and I said, I don't know if I have enough hours of the day.
You can be here all day.
Well, sure is there.
That would be great.
Yeah.
Keep me going.
You okay?
All right.
I love it.
I love it.
Let's go check around here, see what else you guys have.
So this is what all is involved in the second floor.
What do you have up here?
Well, so we have so more retail inside the camper a little bit here on this.
And then over in this section, we kind of call over here, This area, we call it the man cave.
Oh, where?
Go check out the beard more towards men's and my personal some of my hobbies and stuff.
Fishing and of course.
Oh, who do we find over here?
Get in the man cave.
Oh, this is sweet.
Courtney, you wouldn't go to the fridge and get me a cold one.
We're just.
Oh, my.
I already love it.
This is a great space.
Even if you have a man with you.
And maybe, you know, like you were saying, that you want to just sit and wait for us to do the shopping.
Okay?
What if my wife wasn't with me?
But I was just sitting here for her?
Is that okay?
You can come in and enjoy your afternoon just sitting here.
And as long as I get my coffee from your place across the road.
That's right there.
You know, you might have local vendors here, too.
We do have some.
Yes.
And we're always open.
We're looking for more.
We have a few.
We have a leather leather worker lady that makes purses.
And we have some clocks and some different different items that we do have local kind of local flair.
So overall, what would you say your general theme is in gift giving?
Is it home goods?
So, yes, broad it's a very gift, gift oriented gift stuff.
But camping, outdoor, enjoying the outdoors is a lot of it.
Okay.
Now that's we don't want to neglect our we do have a good variety of home goods and kitchen wares and stuff like that.
Can people, if they can't make it here, is there stuff they can order online too?
We do have some of our products online.
Yes.
Okay, great.
That's awesome.
And I know you guys are coming up on the one year anniversary.
I think we're going to talk to your wife about.
Yes.
Yeah.
All right.
Let's go to that.
All right.
Very good.
Thank you.
Now we're with Debra who's one of the other co-owners here.
And Debra, I just love this place And thank you.
Cool thing.
And thank you for coming up on your one year anniversary.
We are.
We're excited about it.
That's amazing.
What do you guys have planned for it?
So we're hoping to just have the community come out, whoever wants to, and just hang out with us.
We'll have the porch doors open and we'll have barbecue ice cream.
So I Yeah.
All right.
Like, bring the kids out.
Bring the family out.
Whoever wants to come hang out or just serve up some free food and hopefully just have a time where people can just kind of connect and spend some time here.
So that's coming up June two, June 23rd, 23rd, Friday and Saturday.
You guys are going to be doing special promotions?
Yes.
Yes, we'll have promotions both Friday night and Saturday.
Just different savings throughout the store, different items on sale.
And both are monthly sales and have other special stuff going on as well.
So and I have to ask you, Debra, when you're here in the store, how do you not buy everything?
That's a challenge.
But yeah, it's fun.
It's fun to see what's coming in and just different new products that we find.
And sure, it's fun.
So.
Well, let's go out to the patio.
This is another cool place.
I know you guys have so many cool spaces and it really is all about community.
This, of course, here's my buddy Dave out here too.
Can we go over today?
Why do you keep ruining my piece so peaceful out here, though?
Really?
Yes.
Thank you.
It was inspiration behind this space.
So this space was here, but it was just kind of a flat roof that wasn't there wasn't really a lot going on.
So we just kind of decided to fix it up a little bit and create a space that we can do events on and just kind of hopefully create some just another fun space to do things.
So I don't know how many outdoor rooftops there are over here in that, but yeah, so this is a really unique space.
I love the big sign up here.
Thank you.
So is this going to be part of the celebration?
Yes.
This is where we'll serve the food and have the live music and stuff for the event.
So, yeah, you know, I think I finally found somewhere that I'll go shopping with my wife and not hate every second of it.
There's a thank you.
But seriously, it's very peaceful, pretty chill.
You can hang out, you can do your own thing.
The only thing that is kind of missing, I'm like, It doesn't have to be alcohol, but like, I could take a cold Diet Coke or something.
Yeah, yeah, we've had that a lot.
So we have to figure out a way to incorporate something like that here.
Just something.
Some cold beverage.
Yeah.
Oh, for sitting out here.
Yeah.
Don't have to get wild.
Yeah, you know, but not too well after a while.
Like, everybody needs neighbors.
Yeah.
All right.
Thank you.
I know a lot of people call you guys.
Just neighbors have.
Yeah.
Down to neighbors, right?
Yeah.
That's kind of what has kind of evolved, is just neighbors.
So I guess it works, right?
Well, I love that this space is working for you guys.
I think everyone gets a chance to come on down to downtown Nappanee and visit neighbors.
Thank you.
All right.
Thank you for showing us around.
Thanks for showing up today.
All right.
So I'm here with Terry Reamer.
Terry, how are you doing?
I'm doing well, brother.
How are you?
You look great.
I like your outfit, you know, I like all the patches and everything of it.
Yeah.
You look cool.
I know you're very active.
A lot of people know you in the community from all of the charity work that you do.
You do a lot for nonprofits.
So tell me a little bit about there's an event coming up on June 24th at Bashor's Children's Home in Goshen.
What exactly is going on outstanding?
Well, we're excited about the 100th anniversary of Bashor's Children's Home, and we've been doing a lot of work with them over the years.
And we're doing a car and motorcycle show with what we call a motorcycle and car show for a cause.
Yeah.
So.
So what made you choose Bashor's Children's Home?
First of all?
Well, our group wanted to engage with with a charitable organization that not only was in our community, but was serving children.
Children are very important to bikers in general, and children are our absolutely our future.
And we found that what they do at Bashor's Children's Home is extremely, extremely unique.
In fact, there's only two other places in the state that I'm aware of that help survivors of trafficking.
And that's our dig.
That's our we want to we want to help those kinds of kids.
So Bashor's was a perfect connection.
Absolutely.
And it's right here in our community.
So coming up on June 24th, on Saturday, June 24th, and obviously this is open to the public to come and see, but also it's open to people that actually already have classic.
Yeah, we want to see your cars and your motorcycles.
Yeah, for sure.
We want you to bring them.
Yeah.
And this is more about us, us meeting you and you meaning basher than it is about your wallet.
Trust me, we just want you there and we're going to have a great time.
We're gonna have a great time.
Absolutely.
Because it's like it's a minimum, like $10 donation if you want to register your car.
Because I know for a lot of classic car enthusiasts or current users who go around to different auto shows, awards and things like that are a big part of absolutely.
Yeah.
We're going to be we're going to be giving away awards plaques for the top ten cars, the top ten motorcycles.
We're going to give trophies to the top three cars, the top three motorcycles, also People's Choice Award.
And then there's going to be a best of show sponsored by Monteith Tire across the street here.
Yeah.
And I know that on the day as well.
You know, for the public who want to come along, it's completely free for them if they want a day out with their kids.
Yeah, I'm sure there's going to be opportunities for them to support.
But we're going to have lots of food vendors.
Yeah, pizza, ice cream, you name it.
Pops, pretzels, popcorn, all kinds of cold drinks and whatnot around.
You better believe it.
It's going to be a great family event.
And what I really love about it, too, as you said, you know, everyone that comes, it's about seeing the cars, the motorcycles.
It's about hanging out with each other.
But it's also an opportunity to educate people about what, Bashor is Right?
Yes, That's a really important issue.
Absolutely right.
That's key.
And our mission, one thing I'd like to mention is not only is our community involved here, let's talk about Elkhart, Indian motorcycle, Hoosier, Harley Davidson, Janis motorcycle.
Let's talk about the tire rack.
Let's talk about once again, Monteith Tire.
Let's talk about the Blue Knights Riders group, the police officers that are supporting us.
It's amazing how this community is coming together for Bashor.
And this is going to be a fantastic show.
You need to be there.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
No, you're right.
Yeah.
And I know that we can put a link on screen and things like that, but people can register.
A lot of people who attend these kind of shows, they tend to just show up with $10 cash on the day, which it's fine to do that, right?
Yeah.
Registration opens at 9 a.m.. Yeah.
So.
All right.
Okay.
All right.
So registration at 9 a.m. then open to the public between ten and two.
And what we decided to do because obviously all the cars are not out of bashor's right now.
They're not sitting out there for a month.
We decided to come to Rock Solid motorsports.
Yeah.
South as beautiful place.
Yeah.
Because they've got so many classic cars so is there any that you'd like to show me that are your favorite?
Wow.
Well, my, my 65 Plymouth satellite's not here, but look at this beauty.
Yeah, yeah, Look at this.
And who doesn't like an SS?
Wow, that's a monster automobile.
When I see a car like this, I think about, like, back in the sixties or seventies where you might show up to a girl's house to take her out on a date and, like, there's no way she wouldn't fall in love.
Yeah, Yeah, for sure.
Yeah, yeah.
And she with that car, she could sit, scoot over and sit next to you.
Yeah, you could do the whole yawn Oh, yeah.
Click the door shut and everything else in Ireland.
We couldn't do that because it's all stick shift.
So we have to, you know, we have to keep our hands on the driving at all stages.
So.
Yeah.
All right.
So, so many great opportunities for people to come out and bashor's such a great organization.
And I love that you guys are doing this.
So anything else you want to mention before we hit the road?
Yeah, just one more thing.
I, I can recall a relationship with a friend of mine that had one of his children landed there and it's amazing the transformation of this young man.
They were afraid that, one, they were going to wake up, his parents were afraid they're going to wake up and that boy would be dead.
And that was a true fact.
And he somehow landed at Bashor's Children's home.
He finished this.
He got his GED.
I'm sorry.
He got his high school graduation and he was able to fly an airplane with a license before he could get in a car and drive a car.
Legal love it.
So that's kind of just one of the short testimonies of what Bashor's Children's Home can do for your family and needs.
So that's wonderful.
Yeah.
And you talk about that, like obviously we talk about human trafficking.
They have a whole unit dedicated to that.
That's us.
Yeah, that's what we love to help.
They have the residential program where kids are there who've been abused or neglected.
But what people may not understand as well is, is that they also have alternative schools where kids who are at risk of being expelled from school in the area, they if they're if they need extra attention, you can go to Bashor too.
So there's not every kid that's there stays there.
There's a lot of kids that go there for school on a daily basis, too, because they need extra attention.
Absolutely support to get through it.
So, yeah, probably like your friend.
Absolutely.
All right.
So support this June 24th.
Yeah.
Car show and motorcycle model on anniversary motorcycle and car show for cars.

We really loved experiencing volunteerism in Michiana It's a great way to give back to organizations who are doing so much for us.
Remember, if you volunteer for an organized mission or one has helped you out, let us know about it, post about it on Facebook and use the hashtag experience michiana and we'll find out about it.
And maybe we'll do a feature on them as well.
We had a great time at Neighbors Mercantile.
They're celebrating one year.
