Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipSo I'm here on Grape Road at Matt Parr, and I'm here with Jessica, who's the co-owner of this.
Jessica, tell me about this.
And why did you open it?
Yeah.
So, Nat, PA opened about three weeks ago, and the reason why we opened it was because we knew there was an opportunity for families, for individuals to come and golf indoors.
And during the wintertime, you know, you beat those winter blues.
So there's nothing much to do.
And why not practice your swings?
Why not come and enjoy the bar while you're here?
And the reason why was because my kids and my co partners, kids and our husbands play golf and we thought I wouldn't this be a great opportunity for all?
This might be a way for you to see your husband.
That's your idea.
Because, I mean it's such a big challenge.
It's a big, expense and big investment to start something like this.
Yeah.
And so people don't necessarily realize that, I mean, even a sign like this on your wall is expensive.
It is.
And so when you think of all these little things, I mean, how do you go from just thinking about it to actually doing it?
Because that's such a big leap.
It really is.
And, you know, the biggest thing is take small steps.
You have to take this.
You have to have the courage and take the steps forward to be able to get to where we are today.
So in order for us to make this a reality, we knew we needed to push past the comfort zone and invest like you said, and really think about what we wanted this to be.
So and so what is it?
I mean, obviously, like, I like the idea of going out and having a few drinks, but I don't necessarily like just like sitting and drinking.
Yeah, I like the idea of going out and doing something else.
Yes.
Your drinks.
So it's it's very social to include golf and golf is really big around here.
It is.
And I think one of the things we've noticed too is that people want experiences, right.
People want to get out of their house and experience, and the more you can provide a better experience for them, the more you can provide a great service.
You know, an atmosphere that's that's one thing we get a lot is like, this is such a good vibe.
I want to be in here.
I really enjoy it.
It's, you know, it's relaxing or it's a lot of fun.
So I think building that experience and giving that experience for the community and those who walk in those stories is important.
You talk about the winter blues.
I mean, we are today.
It's like super bright in here.
There's lots of windows, which I really like too.
It has that nice vibe for people that are not really into golf anymore.
You talk about the experiences, this experience Michiana.
So I do want to experience that here as I do like golf.
You know, I know how bad I am, but but for people that may not like golf, I mean, what else can they experience here?
Yeah.
So I'm not a great golfer myself, but I have a great time because we don't just have we have over 500 courses, but we don't just have the courses.
You can play different games on there.
You know, my kids or if you're not, like I said, I'm an expert golfer.
You still have a wonderful time.
We have so many people that come in here just as a family and play the games for two hours, and they're like, we couldn't I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
So that is true.
Well, talking about experiencing it, we want to talk more a little bit about, you know, what's happening here.
But how many simulators have you got?
Five.
We have 707.
Seven.
Yes.
Okay.
I can count four.
Yeah.
So so you talk about all the courses, so you can play anywhere or.
Yes, yes, anywhere around the world.
All right.
I want to go over and have a look at one.
Absolutely.
I haven't seen a golf club in probably like 2 or 3 months.
This is the perfect place.
This this is a good place.
I can't lose my balls.
That's right.
All right, so we're here in one of the simulators, and, I'm a golf person, but I didn't know.
Trackman is actually a really popular simulator.
So did you know that using it or didn't, did you have to do a lot of research into a lot of getting all this?
How much technology is involved in all this?
It really is a lot of technology.
And the thing about is Trackman is the top notch technology you can get.
It's the best of the best.
So we wanted to make sure we provided that.
Yeah, make sure our kids in the future like can go to college and come here and support it.
You know, this is a lot of investment right now.
And so over here actually it's funny because playing the courses is fun, but can I see some of the games.
Absolutely.
You know, I think about over a two and a half year old daughter and I'm like, yeah, you know she like swinging.
Just we have a little fake set at home.
So like so was it just all touchscreen.
So yeah.
So it's all touchscreen.
And you can see your different options here.
Shuffle golf bullseye adventure.
Yeah.
Our popular ones are scrap yard and cannon ball okay.
So amp up putt.
So yeah those are I mean like as you can see there's different options that you can choose.
If you get bored of one, which usually doesn't happen.
Yeah.
But you do have different options.
How do you make sure with like to stay competitive or pricing and things.
Because I have I don't know what the pricing is, but how do you actually make sure that you can have all this, have families come in but not have it be something that like it's just too expensive for most people?
Yeah.
So, you know, with kids it's like it's crazy I agree.
Yeah I agree.
So it depends on the time of day and the time of the year as well.
Right.
Being an indoor golf facility, there are times where the season is busier than others.
So if you come on a Monday, it's going to be a little less expensive than if you come on a Saturday, you know, or a Friday night.
But yeah, it just varies.
And it's, you know, on our net par golf or on our app, you can see what fits your budget.
When would you be able to come in our schedule and kind of do your reservation.
Isn't that per actually like a nationwide brand or is that just something you created?
It's a franchise, a franchise, yes.
So it's a franchise.
They have different ones in Northwest Indiana, but I know New York, Omaha, they all have them as well.
Awesome.
I think I'm going to do okay, because I do like games, because the idea of just like doing a full course is genuinely like not that exciting, but I love doing closest to the pin.
So I try this.
Absolutely.
So yeah, it's kind of finicky there.
Okay, so oh so so I'm from Ireland originally so I see it there manners here turf which is in Limerick.
So I think we're going to try that.
Perfect.
I should have asked you how to pronounce it really before I just, I yeah.
Let me see 157.
Sounds good to me.
Yeah.
You kind of.
Yes.
Yeah.
There you go.
And then you'll just add your name on here.
Okay.
And then you can add it as a guest.
Okay.
Yeah it's fine.
I'll just do player one there for the sake of it.
And then you can just just play away.
Yeah.
You just play away.
It's pretty self-explanatory.
Seven, seven iron further.
All right.
Hey, that's actually not a bad shot.
Wow.
That's the first time a female's ever been impressed by golf game, so I appreciate that.
Thank you.
Let's just get this date tattooed on my arm.
I need to hit a bit harder.
So there it is.
There it is.
Impressive.
It's in the sand.
Oh, no.
Well, apparently I need to go down a club.
I'm not very good.
So.
Oh, gosh.
How do you feel about it?
How was the experience for you?
It's good.
You know, like, I like the social side of things.
Yes.
A lot of what our golfers say, it's so different from actually playing out on the course.
Yeah, it's always different than than being outside because half of golf is like, is it's like about being out in nature.
Yeah.
Enjoying it.
Yes.
But definitely in weather like this where you can't be outside as much like I definitely like it.
There's a couple of simulators that I've played in that made me feel like kind of, I don't know, not like queasy, but like it feels so big and so bright.
So it's definitely the standard of simulator is definitely way better than any one I've experienced before.
Glad to hear that.
But I do like the fact that you're interviewing me.
So this is great.
Yes.
And the cool thing about this is that whenever you whatever course you choose, the weather, the wind, all of that is accurate.
Oh, so what's going on?
What's really going on at that?
Crazy.
Yes.
That's crazy.
I can see what it looks like.
I can't believe it's actually, like, not raining in Ireland.
So can you change that?
Or does it have to be the net?
That's cool though, isn't it?
Isn't it neat?
That is a new experience.
Like it's there.
Yeah yeah yeah yeah.
Wow.
That's crazy.
I was actually just in Ireland over the weekend and very cool.
The weather was not as nice as that.
So today was a perfect.
Yeah, I should have said who knew that I'd go from Ireland, get here last night, come here today and go back and then go back again.
So yeah.
So that is cool.
But as you mentioned there's an app as well.
So is that just downloading the net right.
Yes.
So there's a, net part app and then there's a track man app.
So the man app allows you to keep track of all the courses and, you know, all the games that you've played.
If we have leagues here as well.
So that'll also keep track of all the courses you played in the, in the league.
And your scores and how well you're doing what you want to improve.
Now, what about because, like me coming in here, right.
So like me coming in here and just, like, hitting balls.
And then I could go out and play, like, the worst I've ever played, even though I played well here.
What about the idea of having, like, instructors?
Is that something that you've ever thought about?
We actually are in the talks of having a PGA do some nice.
So yes, I'm offering those lessons.
I mean, I think it would actually be really cool because then I'd feel like it was actually useful towards like not just having fun, but useful towards the summer of when I actually want to go out and play.
And nephew, I don't know if you know this, but Trackman actually tracks how this is really what your speed and how you hit out in the golf course.
Yeah.
So that's how accurate it is.
It was definitely accurate because it went off to the left.
So that's how I know it's definitely accurate.
So what about food here?
I noticed there was some people up at the bar eating because I wasn't really expecting that when I came in.
Yes, we do have a menu.
Trust me.
I started on the back, the whiskey.
Although after being in Ireland for the weekend, I think I'm good at am forever, but, so yeah, looking at your menu here, like, what?
What have you got going on?
So we have an elevated bar menu, right?
We have shareable as anywhere from tater tots nachos.
And then we also have flatbreads which are very popular.
Yeah.
Very good.
We have pretzels.
We also have a really delicious, warm chocolate chip skillet cookie that we sell a lot or I do for birthdays.
Sometimes we have birthdays or just having a sweet tooth, you know, so we have an elevated bar menu that we like to offer people to come and enjoy something to eat.
Now you're actually open like very early.
We are, well, very early.
I have a two and a half year old, so very early.
It's like 5:00.
But you're open from 8 a.m.. Yes, 8 a.m.. So yeah.
Is that every day?
It is every day.
Wow.
Okay.
Seven days a week.
Do you sleep or are you good?
Maybe like four hours.
Yeah.
And that's between like 12 and 14.
And so seven days a week, you're open, but you're open from 8:00.
Even on a Sunday.
Yeah.
Oh, Sunday.
So what times?
Sunday through Wednesday until 10 p.m.. And then Thursday, Friday and Saturday until midnight.
Okay.
So on here pretty late.
Yeah.
You are you are you like.
And you know we talked I was talking about affordability earlier.
Let me hear a little bit about like what it cost to actually come here.
Yeah.
So it depends on the day.
It depends on the time of the week that you'd like to come.
And it also depends on the season.
Right.
Winter is going to be a little bit more busier.
And yeah.
So it depends.
If you come in the morning you could golf anywhere from $20 up to $80 per hour.
So it's not per bay and it's not per person.
It's per hour.
Okay.
So you can have up to eight people at your bay okay.
So again it's like yeah that's at the busiest time that it's $30.
But if you came in when it's $20 and you had five people, it's just you know.
Exactly.
Yeah, exactly.
Okay.
Let's say you split it among your, you know, your group.
It's really not it's very reasonable.
Yeah.
No, absolutely it is.
And again, even if you just want to come in on your own, it's still reasonable exactly what you want to do.
Especially you want to practice.
So awesome.
And I see you have old fashioneds.
We do.
What time is it?
No go.
But, best of luck with everything to you and the other co-owners.
And, you know, it takes a it's a big thing to do this year right here on Grape and Day.
Yes, yes, here as well.
And, yeah, I always appreciate when people go for something like this.
Thank you.
Go and do it.
And I hope a lot of people come and just experience it and have a good time.
Thank you.
Yeah, that's what we're here for.
Just to give people a great experience to enjoy the Michiana area and come learn how to play golf or improve their golf skills, or just have a date night or friends.
Yeah, whatever it could be.
It's true.
It's so nice to come out and actually have fun.
And yes, at a bar.
Yes.
Although you can do that too.
That's right.
Hey, that was my best shot.
Watch.
Look at this.
Still short.
Okay, well, don't forget to check out this place.
Now, part of they also have memberships.
They even have weekly leagues, which is really cool as well.
And, yeah, support this local business.
That's really fun.
