Using field guides can be a fun connection between reading and learning.
Field guides are a tool for kids to learn about the natural world. Not only do they offer information about native animals and plants, they also expose children to new vocabulary. Paired with a day outside, activities using field guides can be a fun way to strengthen the connection between reading and learning.

With technology all around us, it's nice to take a break from it all.
My kids like to play at our local park with field guides.
These guides have pictures of plants and animals along with facts about them.
- The blue is winter range so-- - [Dad] This helps them build their vocabulary by sounding out new words.
- [Girl] Red-headed, the red-bellied-- - [Dad] Not only do the books keep their interests, but they feed their curiosity as well.
- So, it could be this one, this one, or this one.
- [Dad] Reading about animals and plants in the book encourages them to scour the park for new discoveries.
Although, we don't see many of the creatures-- - It must be this one, right?
- It's a fun, interactive way for them to explore their environment-- - These change colors.
- And strengthen the connection between reading and learning.
