(light music) - [Peter] Fire is destructive.

(explosion booms) In myths and legends, it is the war-bringer and the harbinger of hell.

But fire is also creative.

When it erupts from the Earth's core as lava, it cools to become places of reverence, or places of rest, reflection and relaxation.

It creates our coastlines, and habitat for our planet's species.

It ignites the new.

Of the World's Greatest Icons, Fire is nature's rocket-fuel for cataclysmic change.

(dramatic music) (monkey grunts) (elephant trumpets) (light rhythmic music) The Islands of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean are renowned for their stunning beauty.

The rolling surf, sun-baked beaches and vibrant Polynesian culture, make Hawaii a must-see destination for millions of tourists.

But this isolated paradise would not exist, quite literally, without one thing.

(volcano booming) Lava.

Fire from the earth's core.

Hawaii sits in the centre of the Pacific Plate, where the earth's crust is thinner, allowing molten rock or magma to push through it and up towards the surface.

Emerging at temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees, the magma, now lava, radiates outwards, eventually cooling and hardening into solid rock.

All eight of Hawaii's principal islands, have been shaped by this fiery volcanic activity.

But none of them is as active as the youngest and most visited: Kilauea.

One of five volcanoes that form the Big Island of Hawaii, Kilauea started life about 250,000 years ago, as a magma leak on the seabed.

The magma accumulated over time to form a seamount, an underwater landform, before finally breaking the surface to form the island.

(light music) (helicopter humming) At the summit of Kilauea is a large caldera and lava lake.

Fluid lava spills from the crater and spreads in all directions, forming a vast lava bed.

Fittingly, in the Hawaiian language, Kilauea translates as spewing or much spreading, and the result is a shield volcano, named because of its resemblance to the flat profile of a warrior's shield.

The edge of the shield is the coast, where fire meets water, a spectacle that has inspired awe for centuries.

(dramatic music) According to Polynesian legend, Kilauea is the body of Pele, the goddess of fire, lightning and volcanoes.

Her gifts were the envy of the pig god, Kamapua'a, who tried to smother Pele's lava spouts and choke her with smoke.

Although it has periods of dormancy, Kilauea is still one of the most active volcanoes in the world today, exemplifying the continuous and cataclysmic creativity of earth's extraordinary fire.

Whilst hot viscous lava continues to push Kilauea's borders outwards, wider and wider, elsewhere, thicker, slower laval flow stacks mountains higher and higher.

As is the case with Mount Fuji in Japan.

(bright music) At 3,776 metres, Mount Fuji is Japan's highest mountain.

Whilst it looks like one continuous mountain, Fuji is actually a composite of three volcanoes.

The first, called Komitak, formed 600,000 years ago.

Followed by Ko Fuji meaning Old Fuji.

And lastly, the top volcanic layer called Shin Fuji, or New Fuji, which was active 10,000 years ago, and has continued to smoulder ever since.

On-going eruptions filled in the slopes of Fuji's two predecessors and added height to the summit, producing the mountain's graceful conical form.

Mount Fuji has become one of Japan's most recognisable natural icons, replicated countless ways from products to postcards.

Most famously it was the muse of artist Hokusai, who immortalised Mount Fuji in his 1830s woodblock prints called "36 Views of Mount Fuji."

(light music) Tourists find all sorts of ways to get their own 36 views of the mountain, including boat rides at nearby lakes.

Pirate-styled ships offer lots of kitsch distraction, if the mountain's too shy to reveal itself from behind the clouds, which is common.

Reflecting on the mountain from shore is often the best way.

(light music) Mount Fuji is a major feature of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, established in 1936 and designated a World Heritage Site in 2013.

Japanese people regard Mount Fuji as sacred, and climbing it is considered a religious practise.

Each summer thousands trek to the shrine at its peak, to pay their respects.

In ancient times, the ascent was only made by male pilgrims in white robes.

Women were banned until the Meiji Restoration in 1868.

Now Mount Fuji is for everyone.

(peaceful music) One religious sect called Fujiko, accords the mountain with a soul, and dozens of shrines and temples frame the volcano in a holy light.

Timing a visit with a fiery sunrise is apt.

It's believed the word Fuji is an ancient Ainu term meaning fire.

This name remains a warning.

For although Mount Fuji has been dormant since its last eruption in 1707, it's still classified as active.

Geologists warn a major eruption would disgorge millions of cubic metres of ash, smothering and paralysing Tokyo city just 100 kilometres away.

Time will tell if this great icon of fire, still has another top to blow.

(gentle music) Whilst some icons, like Mount Fuji, announce themselves spectacularly for all to see, others are a little more retiring, but, in their own way, just as extraordinary.

Less than 150 kilometres northwest of Mount Fuji is the high alps country of Nagano Prefecture.

This area is home to nine of Japan's 12 highest mountains.

And the thick snows fostered by sub-zero winter temperatures make Nagano a haven for winter sports.

But it would be easy to mistake this iconic place as being defined by ice.

Concealed beneath Nagano's crystals are flames.

Most of the mountains in this area are volcanic in origin, and the water lying beneath is superheated by volcanic magma.

(light rhythmic music) The water then rises to the surface and manifests as either a steaming geyser, or a hot spring.

There are 200 hot springs in Nagano, and the most famous is Yamanouchi.

(light playful music) Here wild macaques, nicknamed Snow Monkeys, escape the frigid weather by taking the plunge.

The explanation for this behaviour is simple: to get warm.

Bathing is a daily ritual for the troop, especially in the cold winter months from December to March when outside temperatures plummet below freezing.

Scientific studies reveal that bathing reduces stress and even increases fertility.

In this matriarchal society, older females benefit the most.

Their anxiety is high due to responsibilities in the troop and maintaining rank.

And their stress hormones markedly reduce when they take time out to groom and relax in the volcanic springs.

The only problem is, getting out again, to face the freeze.

(gentle music) Bathing is a practise shared by Nagano's humans, too, with over 700 bath-houses tapping into the hot springs.

The water is mineral-rich and believed to possess huge health benefits.

And, if proof were needed, Nagano prefecture boasts the highest life expectancy in Japan, with women averaging 87 years, and men 81.

So, whether you're a human or a macaque, bathing is no monkey business.

Ablutions are taken very seriously indeed.

(airy music) An allegiance with fire has shaped human cultures throughout the world.

In Aotearoa, New Zealand, Maoris harnessed geothermal energy for cooking and ceremony.

And Rotorua was their favourite cauldron.

(light playful music) Iconic Rotorua lies in the heart of the North Island, in the Taupo Volcanic Zone.

This zone has been volcanically active for over 2 million years, and is still highly active.

The best place to witness this activity is Rotorua's Waiotapu thermal wonderland.

(volcano hissing) This is one of New Zealand's most extensive geothermal systems extending over 18 square kilometres.

(uneasy music) (mud bubbling) Fire has been sculpting the landscape here for thousands of years.

sulfuric steam belches in all directions.

And mud pools bubble and boil, with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees centigrade.

This is as close as a landscape gets to being hot under the collar.

(dramatic music) And if Mother Nature really wants to vent her fury, then nothing's as good as a geyser.

The Pohutu Geyser goes off every hour, expelling superheated water and steam 30 metres into the air.

(bright music) And you can set your watch to the Lady Knox geyser, which erupts at 10.15 AM every day.

Beyond the geysers, is Lake Rotorua.

This body of water is ironically more evidence of fire.

It's the flooded caldera of an ancient volcano, formed by a massive eruption 240,000 years ago.

Rotorua city, dubbed Sulphur City, sits on its shores.

Life here is intrinsically linked to volcanic activity.

A quarter of the city's hot water needs are provided by Waiotapu's springs.

More widely, 17% of New Zealand's electricity is generated from geothermal energy.

When fire can be bridled, its uses are endless, from big picture to very personal.

Worldwide, the health and wellness industry is worth billions of dollars, and the by-products of fire are in hot demand.

Rotorua's volcanic mud is said to have medicinal and purifying properties, and the spa treatment industry is a big economy-earner.

With money to be made from the fire beneath the earth, the eyes of the world are on geothermal areas.

(majestic music) In Russia, those eyes are very much focused on Kamchatka.

This 1,200-kilometerr-long peninsula is called The Land of Fire and Ice.

It's a vast wilderness area, about the same size in area as Aeotearoa, New Zealand and consisting of 160 volcanoes, the highest density of volcanoes in the world.

Its star is Mutnovsky.

(gentle music) This huge volcano rises over 2,000 metres above sea level.

It's called a complex stratovolcano, which is the result of not one but four caldera-forming eruptions over the past 100,000 years.

Over time these multiple volcanoes fused into the cone we call Mutnovsky, which is capped by not one but two calderas, shaped like a pear.

Fire and ice are unlikely allies here.

The earth boils, yet winter's weather can drop below -70 degrees Centigrade.

Glaciers interconnect craters.

Hot vapours freeze, and form ice.

Ice melts into stunning blue lakes.

Lakes freeze over, corking thermal activity, until the next eruption blasts ice sky high.

(airy music) Over the past 100 years, Mutnovsky has erupted 10 times, most violently in the late 1940s and again in 1960.

The last eruption was March 2000.

So its next shake-up is overdue.

As the New Zealanders have done at Rotorua, the Russians have harnessed Mutnovsky's fire-power for their own use.

Geothermal power stations near the volcano, generate almost a quarter of the energy used on the Kamchatka Peninsula.

(vapour puffing) That equates to less than 1% of Russia's energy use.

But with the world ever more determined to transition from fossil fuel dependency, Mutnovsky is perhaps a beacon of hope and possibility.

(airy music) There's literally no end to Mutnovsky's energy.

It rises from the earth's core in the form of heat and noxious gases, every second of every day.

Vents called fumaroles cover the slopes, emitting carbon dioxide, methane and sulphur dioxide.

The sulphur taints the fumaroles yellow.

Some of these fumaroles are thousands of years old, colouring Mutnovsky's walls and pumice slopes with various deep earth minerals.

(gentle music) If ever a volcano was a fire-breathing dragon incarnate, it's certainly Mutnovsky.

Even around its feet, fire still rages.

At the volcano's base lies a six-kilometer thermal stretch called the Valley of the Geysers.

90 geysers crowd this valley, the second largest concentration of geysers in the world after Yellowstone National Park, in the United States.

(light anxious music) Mutnovsky's volcanism has done more good than bad to the surrounding landscape.

Mineral-rich, highly fertile soil, makes the surrounding Kamchatka Peninsula a wilderness haven.

It looks idyllic, but the constant underlying threat of volcanism is a powerful deterrent for most humans.

Kamchatka is one of the least populated places on the planet, less than one person per square kilometre.

Most beat a speedy retreat after daring a visit to Mutnovsky, feeling lucky this great fire icon delayed its inevitable next eruption for yet another day.

(light music) Kamchatka lies in the fabled Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped rim approximately 400,000 kilometres long and 500 kilometres wide, and running around the Pacific coasts.

90% of all earthquakes occur along the Ring of Fire, and of the 1,000 or so volcanoes found here, a third have been active in recent times.

(light anxious music) The tiny island nation of Vanuatu lies in the Ring of Fire, and consists of nine active volcanoes.

The most famous is on Tanna Island.

It's called Mount Yasur.

Rising 361 metres above sea level, Mount Yasur smoulders away on the coast of Sulphur Bay.

One of the world's most active volcanoes, Mount Yasur has been erupting constantly for centuries, with eruptions occurring several times an hour every single day.

The reason, is a subterranean war.

Underneath Mount Yasur, the eastward-moving Indo-Australian tectonic plate is being drawn beneath the westward Pacific Plate.

(lava sizzling) This violent unrest enables deep-earth fire to rise up and escape via Mount Yasur, constantly.

(bright music) The result is a denuded wasteland around the volcano that is more moon-like than earth-like.

Much of this is a Permanent Exclusion Zone, and the entire summit is labelled a Danger Zone.

(car swooshing) Mount Yasur is promoted as the world's most accessible volcano, and it's this accessibility that helps make it an icon.

In just a quick drive and a skip and a jump, the crater is conquered.

And you're face to face with fire.

(lava explodes) (tense music) Burning chunks of lava, some the size of cars, regularly fly from the crater.

Embers singe the skin, methane burns the nostrils, and tremors are felt underfoot.

Mount Yasur is certainly one hell of a spot.

(light peaceful music) Just beyond Mount Yasur's hell, is a tropical heaven.

The locals of Tanna Island enjoy an idyllic lifestyle, and revere Mount Yasur.

Many belong to a religious cult which worships a mysterious American called John Frum, who appeared on Tanna during World War II.

According to locals, worshipping Frum will result in great prosperity if islanders reject white man's bible, money and education, and adhere to traditional ways.

Cult members believe Frum lives in Mount Yasur, and claim the volcano as their territory.

(uneasy music) Mount Yasur has not only shaped religion but also history.

(lava gushing) The glow of the volcano attracted the attention of Captain James Cook, during his journey through the Pacific Islands in 1774.

He ordered his crew to steer towards Tanna and land there, and recorded in his journal, "being guided by a great fire we saw upon it."

The fire-show Captain Cook observed had been going on unabated for at least 800 years before him.

And promises to continue for centuries to come.

Mount Yasur, a light-house of an icon, burning bright in the Ring of Fire.

(light music) Indonesia is also in the Ring of Fire, and volcanoes are a hallmark of its landscape, with more than 200 popping up across its islands.

The most iconic volcano in this region is found on the island of Java.

This is Mount Bromo.

Its name is inspired by the Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu god of Creation.

(uneasy music) The Tengger mountains, of which Mount Bromo is part, has been shaped by fire for over 800,000 years.

(rhythmic music) Five overlapping stratovolcanoes make up the Tengger volcanic complex, with the ancient Tengger caldera over 16 kilometres wide.

Inside this caldera is the Sandsea Caldera, which formed 8,000 years ago.

And inside the Sandsea, Mount Bromo erupted into life.

(rhythmic music) Volcano, within a volcano, within a volcano.

(uneasy music) Mount Bromo is the youngest child of a huge family of volcanoes.

Nearby is the sisterly figure of Mount Batok, with her classic reddish shape and etched surface.

And behind is the peak of Mount Semeru, looking down on Mount Bromo like a haughty big brother.

(airy anxious music) What Mount Bromo lacks in size or beauty, it makes up for with attitude.

Bad attitude.

It erupts every few years and its volcanism has made world news on many occasions.

In 2004 an eruption killed two tourists.

(siren wailing) (people murmuring) In November 2010, violent plumes of ash closed airports.

And in December 2015 Mount Bromo ejected so much ash that surrounding homes and businesses were abandoned.

(gentle music) And an exclusion zone was established around its base.

A vast volcanic ash landscape encircles Mount Bromo, and is a protected reserve called Laut Pasir, meaning sea of sand.

(light rhythmic music) Despite the dangers, countless people cross this sea of sand to climb the volcano.

Mount Bromo's deathly beauty inspires myth and legend, and is especially important to the local Tengger people.

Every year they make a pilgrimage to the rim, casting food, money and animal sacrifices into the fire.

They do this to appease the gods.

And the gods do need appeasing here.

Mount Bromo, or Brahma, isn't done with creation yet, nor destruction.

(energetic music) While some areas are left undesirable, even uninhabitable, due to the force of earth's fire, other places owe their entire identity to it, and offer safe haven because of it.

Such a place is Cappadocia.

(rhythmic music) Cappadocia lies in central Turkey, on a plateau north of the Taurus Mountains.

Cappadocia's landscape is dominated by soft volcanic rock, which has eroded over millions of years into towers, cones, valleys, and caves.

(light music) Towering boulders and honeycombed hills give it an otherworldly beauty.

The most iconic formations of this iconic place are these so-called fairy chimneys.

Like the rest of the landscape, they consist of compressed volcanic ash topped with lava.

On sloped areas, cracks formed in this substrate, and these created isolated pillars, which then eroded into conical shapes.

A fairy chimney exists until the neck of the cone erodes through, and the protective cap falls off.

Humans have lived here for centuries, carving storerooms, stables, houses and even entire cities into the ashen rock.

Incredibly, more than 40 subterranean cities have been discovered in Cappadocia, many connected via tunnels.

Used well into the 20th century as a refuge for people to escape persecution during the Ottoman Empire, it wasn't until 1923 that the subterranean cities of Cappadocia were finally abandoned.

Today, many pinnacles are still used for habitation or storage.

And subterranean hotel rooms offer visitors a taste of life below ground, albeit with a bit more finery.

To experience the spirit of Cappadocia is to be underground.

(bright music) But to truly appreciate its physical oddity, there's nowhere better than mid-air.

Beneath the basket stretches the district of east-central Anatolia and the fried folds of Turkey.

Being in a hot air balloon is a great way to remember Cappadocia's red-hot origins.

Turkey sits at a place of friction, between the Asian and European continental plates.

Friction causes fire, and recurrent volcanoes blanketed the area with boulders, ash, lava and sediment, from which Cappadocia evolved.

This great icon of nature is an extreme example of a fire-shaped landscape, tamed then sculpted, by water and wind, to incredibly beautiful effect.

(gentle music) Most fire icons are easy to spot.

They advertise themselves with flame, lava and ash.

But some, conceal their true natures.

This is the country of Tanzania.

It's home to Africa's most recognisable landmark and an undisputed icon: Mount Kilimanjaro.

Called the Roof of Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro rises 5,895 metres above sea level, and is the continent's highest peak.

And the tallest free-standing mountain on earth.

At the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, the role of fire is invisible.

The lowlands are lush and grassy, the foothills are forested.

Quintessential African wildlife abounds.

Life is easy in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The Kilimanjaro National Park, covering an area of almost 76,000 hectares, is a wildlife haven and UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering food and protection for many endangered species.

(majestic music) But to know this icon, you must ascend.

As the air thins, rainforest turns to moorland.

Moorland turns to alpine desert.

And desert turns to ice.

Tonnes of it.

Incredibly, this mountain, sitting just 300 kilometres from the equator, is covered in a permanent ice cap.

(light music) Astride this ice is a throne made by fire, a huge crater which reveals Mount Kilimanjaro's true identity, as an ancient volcano.

It is in fact a classic stratovolcano, formed over millions of years, gaining height as each eruption added a new layer of lava, rock and ash.

Three cones form its summit.

Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.

Kibo is the largest, and was last active approximately 200,000 years ago.

Although classified as dormant, scientists warn Kibo could erupt again.

But for centuries, ice has kept fire in check.

During the Pleistocene era of approximately 3 million years ago to 12,000 years ago, the ice cap covered 400 square kilometres down to an elevation of 3,200 metres.

Even in the late 1800s, the ice cap covered 20 square kilometres, and giant glaciers thousands of years old, flowed down the southern and western slopes.

The endurance of ice seems improbable.

Not only because of the mountain's inner fire, but the fire of the sun.

(light music) This close to the equator, solar radiation is high and the rays burn.

When early explorers first reported ice on top of an African mountain, they were ridiculed.

The last laugh might be with us, after all.

Although Mount Kilimanjaro has maintained its marriage of fire and ice for aeons, climate change may now err on the side of fire.

In 2011, over 85% of Mount Kilimanjaro's ice cover disappeared.

And scientists believe at the current rate of global warming, most will have melted by 2040 and it's unlikely any will remain by 2060.

Fire and ice are our planet's Yin and Yan.

Totally opposite forces, of equal power.

Sometimes they coexist, like at Mount Kilimanjaro.

Sometimes they go rogue, and change the world.

(light music) Eyjafjallajokull Volcano is a fire icon like no other.

Ironically, it's located in Iceland, and it is completely covered by an icecap.

This icecap covers a vast area of approximately 100 square kilometres.

The only way to appreciate the size is from the air.

(cheerful music) Even from above, it's almost impossible to comprehend Eyjafjallajokull Volcano.

Like a gigantic bruise, the landscape is black and blue, black volcanic ash mixed with blue compressed ice.

Several steep glaciers protrude from the ice cap, especially on the northern side.

Liquid mud and meltwater create waterfalls on every face, which feed countless streams and rivers that snake towards the sea.

Iceland's coastline once lapped the foothills of the volcano, but over thousands of years the sea retreated five kilometres away.

Now the area between volcano and coast is a flat lava bed, and the nearest beaches are black.

(light music) Because of its icecap, Eyjafjallajokull is called a subglacial volcano.

It lies in the country's East Volcanic Zone, and is part of a chain of volcanoes that stretch right across Iceland.

The volcano is fed by a magma chamber directly beneath it, which in turn is fueled by the volatile Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

This 40,000-kilometer-long crack in the ocean floor sits beneath Iceland, formed by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

Put simply, Iceland is being torn open, and fire is its blood.

(volcano erupts) Eyjafjallajokull erupted in 920 AD, 1612 and 1821.

Concealed under the ice is a crater four kilometres wide.

As each eruption cooled, Iceland's frigid weather reapplied the icecap.

It kept Eyjafjallajokull's volcanism out of sight, out of mind, until April 14, 2010.

The first sign of trouble was lava spewing through fissures in the summit's glacier.

Ice vaporised rapidly, and gases expanded.

Water mixed with magma, nature's equivalent of a Molotov cocktail.

Suddenly, Eyjafjallajokull roared into life, a series of explosions sent plumes of steam and ash 11 kilometres into the atmosphere.

800 people in the immediate area were evacuated, mostly fearful of flooding from all the melted ice.

Thankfully the impact was minimal in Iceland.

But an eruption knows no border.

Prevailing winds carried the ash across the North Atlantic Ocean and over much of Northern Europe, halting air traffic for a week.

The economic impact was in the billions.

The eruption was a reminder of how far-reaching a volcano's impact can be.

And put Iceland back on the map as a country of concern.

(uneasy music) Iceland is less than half the size of the United Kingdom.

But it's made up of 30 active volcanic systems.

And over the past 500 years, its volcanoes have produced one third of the globe's total lava output.

This place packs a punch, and its fire has changed the world.

For Icelanders, Eyjafjallajokull's eruption wasn't a one-off.

It was a potent deja-vu, jolting them back to this place.

Lakagigar.

This 25-kilometer-long volcanic fissure, bisects Laki Mountain, and cuts through the southern Icelandic Highlands just north of Eyjafjallajokull.

(ominous music) Today, Lakagigar fissure is a beguiling and seemingly benign landscape of basalt, ash and ice similar to Eyjafjallajokull.

But like the volcano, a burning secret lies under all that ice.

In 1783, this area erupted violently.

130 craters opened up.

Fountains of lava exploded sky-high, reaching heights of 1.5 kilometres.

For five months it continued, the largest lava eruption in modern human history.

The ash cloud was so dense, it closed ports across Europe and created a haze that lasted months, turning the sun blood coloured.

(volcano hissing) Billions of tonnes of hydrofluoric acid and sulphur dioxide filled the atmosphere and poisoned the earth.

Half of Iceland's livestock perished, and one third of its population died.

The noxious cloud altered climate, killed crops, and caused famine as far away as Asia and Africa.

It's most known for its impact in France.

The collapse of grain production led to bread shortages and unrest, contributing to the French Revolution.

(light music) Fire icons like Eyjafjallajokull give valuable perspective.

They're not just geological marvels.

They have the power to alter history and humanity in just minutes.

In Iceland, the threat of volcanism is daily.

Evacuation drills are part of life, and everyone knows where to run to if the ground rumbles.

In the meantime, Icelanders make the most of what fire has to offer.

Geothermal energy heats over 90% of Iceland's housing, and glacial meltwater offers hydroelectric power.

All this clean energy, makes Iceland one of the least polluted countries in the world.

And while the country awaits its next life-threatening eruption, people ironically flock to the many hot volcanic pools to wash away any sense of danger.

(bright music) Wildlife also capitalises on the perks of fire.

Fertile soils, rich flora, and dramatic black cliffs entice seabirds here year-round.

A staggering 4,500 seabird colonies exist on Iceland, including breeding pairs of terns, gulls and skuas.

Iceland also hosts over half the world's population of Atlantic Puffins, with eight to 10 million birds migrating here each spring to breed.

All told, the country of Iceland is a fire icon in itself.

(majestic music) Time and again, it's cast off its ice cloak to reveal this true nature.

It's a place where nature rules, and where humans know their place.

Where new fire icons are born every few years, and where fire-power changes destiny.

(bright music) Fire is both a creative and destructive force.

It connects the skin of our planet to its molten heart, casting forth minerals to form some of earth's most unearthly landscapes.

Sometimes it burns and scars.

Other times it builds and beautifies.

Untamed, it triggers mass extinctions.
