THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF OUR VEST STUDY.
WE'VE HAD A CHANCE TO WORK ON VESTS THAT INCORPORATE BLOCKS ON THE BACK AND THE FRONT, CRAZY PATCH, STRING QUILTING, AND OUR STENCIL DESIGN.
AND NOW WE'RE GONNA TOUCH ON SEMINOLE AND A COUPLE OTHER IDEAS ALSO.
WE HAD SEEN CHERYL BRADKIN'S BOOK EARLIER AND HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO SEE SOME OF THE MARVELOUS THINGS THAT CAN BE DONE.
I WANTED TO SHOW YOU HOW THAT CAN BE WORKED INTO VESTS ALSO.
IN THIS CASE, IT'S JUST A PATCHWORK VEST.
IN OTHER WORDS, YOU CAN HIGHLIGHT, IN THIS CASE, JUST THE SIDE AND THE UNDERNEATH ARM PORTION OF THE VEST AND NOT PUT ANY BATTING IN IT.
AND IT MAKES IT REALLY AN ALL-SEASONABLE VEST.
BUT THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE GOING ON ON THE BLACK ONE.
CHERYL HAS BEEN NICE ENOUGH TO SEND ME A SKI JACKET, A DOWN JACKET, AND I THINK THAT'S A GREAT WAY TO ACCENT YOUR SEMINOLE.
SHE'S CHOSEN A PATTERN THAT I THINK IS HIGHLIGHTED WHEN IT COMES TOGETHER AT THE CENTER.
CERTAIN OF HER PATTERNS LOOK BETTER WHEN THEY'RE PUT TOGETHER IN THAT FASHION.
I THINK THAT'S VERY NICE.
DON'T FORGET ABOUT EVEN DECORATING YOUR TOWELS IN YOUR HOUSE.
THERE ARE MANY WAYS TO DECORATE WITH SEMINOLE.
IT GOES VERY NICELY.
I EVEN TOOK THAT SAME IDEA AND PUT IT INTO SOME SUSPENDERS.
SO THERE ARE ALL SORTS OF WAY THAT YOU CAN WORK WITH SEMINOLE.
I AM ALSO GOING TO USE THIS ON ANOTHER JACKET IDEA.
THE CONCEPT BEHIND THIS JACKET IS THAT YOU CUT OUT THE LINING.
NOW, THIS HAPPENS TO BE THE BACK AND THEN THE TWO FRONTS.
AND THIS WILL BE THE PERMANENT LINING OF YOUR JACKET.
THEN THE BATTING IS CUT OUT-- THIS WILL, OF COURSE, BE FOR WARMTH.
THE BATTING IS CUT OUT AND BASTED TO YOUR LINING.
THEN ALL THE DECORATION-- AND IN THIS CASE, THE SEMINOLE AND MAYBE OTHER FORMS OF STRING QUILTING AND MAYBE EVEN SOME PATCHWORK-- WILL BE PLACED ON THIS.
AND THEN MY BANDS WILL BE CUT OUT AND SEWN AND FLIPPED SO THAT THE MACHINE SEWING, THAT IS THE BOBBIN THREAD, WILL BE RIGHT ON THE LINING OF THE JACKET.
SO IT MAKES SENSE TO HAVE SOMETHING THAT HAS PRETTY MUCH OF A DESIGN BACK HERE, AND YOU WON'T SEE MUCH OF YOUR MACHINE WORK.
BUT THE NICE THING IS THAT YOU'RE REALLY MAKING THE WHOLE JACKET AT ONE TIME.
AND THEN THE IDEA ALSO IS THAT WHEN YOUR JACKET IS COMPLETE AND YOU HAVE ALL YOUR DECORATION ON THE SLEEVES AND THE SIDE PANEL, IT SIMPLY SEWS TOGETHER LIKE THIS.
ONE FELL SWOOP ALL THE WAY OVER, AND YOU'LL BE COMPLETELY DONE.
NOW, YOU CAN COVER THOSE RAW EDGES WITH SOME GROSGRAIN RIBBON OR SPECIAL BINDING OR SEAM TAPE IN EITHER THE SAME COLOR OR A DIFFERENT COLOR.
IT COULD BE ON THE OUTSIDE, OR IT COULD BE IN THE INSIDE.
I WANT TO SEW JUST A LITTLE BIT OF SEMINOLE TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF EXACTLY HOW IT WORKS.
YOU WANT TO REMEMBER THAT IN THIS CASE OF THIS PARTICULAR ONE, IT WOULD MEAN SEWING THREE COLORS TOGETHER.
THESE ARE VERY, VERY CLOSE IN COLOR, SO IT'S KIND OF HARD TO SEE, BUT I HAVE A WHITE AND THEN KIND OF A BEIGE THAT HAS TEXTURE AND THEN A MUSLIN ONE.
SO LONG BANDS ARE SEWN TOGETHER.
THEN THEY'RE CUT APART, AND OF COURSE, WHAT DETERMINES YOUR DESIGN IS HOW WIDE YOU CUT THOSE APART.
THEN YOU RESEW THEM TOGETHER, BUT WHEN YOU RESEW THEM, YOU USUALLY SHIFT DOWN ANOTHER SEAM.
SO IN OTHER WORDS, INSTEAD OF RESEWING IT THERE, YOU CAN COME DOWN TO THERE.
AND PINNING AND JUST KIND OF GETTING YOUR LITTLE FACTORY SYSTEM SET UP IS ONE OF THE SECRETS IN DOING SEMINOLE.
I'M GOING TO JUST SEW ONE OF THEM, AND YOU CAN KIND OF GET AN IDEA OF HOW THIS WORKS.
ONCE AGAIN, YOU HAVE TO KIND OF WATCH YOUR SEAMS ALL THE WAY DOWN.
AND OF COURSE, I'VE KIND OF GONE AHEAD AND GOTTEN A LOT OF THIS DONE, BUT IT DOES GIVE YOU MORE OR LESS THE IDEA OF HOW IT WORKS.
THAT WOULD BE MY CONNECTION WAS MADE RIGHT THERE.
AND THEN LONG PIECES OF MATERIAL ON THE STRAIGHT OF THE GRAIN ARE CUT AND THEN WOULD BE SEWN TO THIS.
AND ONCE AGAIN, YOU'RE GONNA LOSE A LITTLE BIT OF YOUR TRIANGLE RIGHT THERE.
NOW, I HAVE A COUPLE OTHER IDEAS THAT I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU, AND I SHOWED MY STUDENTS THIS VEST THE OTHER DAY, AND THEY JUST EXCLAIMED AND SAID THEY COULDN'T BELIEVE I HAD USED MACHINE ZIGZAGGING, BECAUSE NORMALLY WHEN I WORK WITH APPLIQUE, I ALWAYS TURN UNDER THE RAW EDGES.
BUT I THINK THAT THERE IS A LOT OF ROOM FOR EXPERIMENTING WHEN YOU'RE WORKING WITH A ZIGZAG, AND ESPECIALLY IF YOUR MACHINE DOES DECORATIVE STITCHES.
IT'S A GOOD WAY TO LEARN ABOUT THEM AND TO JUST CHANGE AND DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
I HAD THE DESIRE TO DO THIS, MY BALTIMORE ROW HOUSES, OR YOU COULD CALL IT CHARLESTON ROW HOUSES, AND IT'S JUST A MATTER OF, ONCE YOU HAVE YOUR FOUNDATION CUT OUT, SITTING DOWN WITH YOUR CHOICE OF FABRICS AND START CUTTING DIFFERENT SHAPES OF HOUSES.
AND OF COURSE, THE ROOF LINES ARE FUN TO VARY ALSO.
AND THEN SIMPLY MACHINE APPLIQUE RIGHT ON THAT.
NOW, I HAVE A GOOD NEWS AND A BAD NEWS STORY WHICH IS KIND OF FUN.
DONNA GREEN, A FRIEND, BROUGHT OVER THIS LOVELY DOWN JACKET THAT ONE OF HER DAUGHTERS HAD PURCHASED, AND SHE ONLY HAD WORN IT ONE SEASON WHEN THE BAD NEWS HAPPENED.
THE BAD NEWS WAS THAT SHE SPILLED A HUGE AMOUNT OF OIL RIGHT ON THE BACK OF IT FROM A SKI LIFT.
AND OF COURSE, THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT IT FELL RIGHT IN THE CENTER.
SO WE DECIDED THAT POSSIBLY, WE COULD SAVE THIS JACKET BY PUTTING A PATCHWORK BLOCK ON IT.
SO I GOT OUT MY PAPER AND MEASURED AND DESIGNED A BLOCK JUST THIS SIZE ON THE SHAPE OF A BASKET WITH THE SAME COLORS OF BROWN INSIDE THE JACKET AND WENT AHEAD AND PIECED THIS TOGETHER.
NOW, THERE'S JUST A HINT-- I WANT TO REMIND YOU ABOUT WHENEVER YOU HAVE A RIGHT ANGLE TO PIECE HERE, REMEMBER THAT YOU WOULD START AT THE OUTSIDE EDGE AND MACHINE STITCH DOWN TO JUST THAT SEAM, STOP, AND BACKSTITCH.
TAKE IT OFF THE MACHINE AND THEN TURN IT AGAIN TO FINISH.
SO THAT AT THIS CONNECTION RIGHT HERE, YOU'RE GONNA HAVE A LITTLE TAB THAT'S GONNA BE EXTRA.
BUT WHEN THAT'S FINISHED, I'LL PRESS IT AND THEN PUT SOME BROWN SEAM TAPE ALL THE WAY AROUND THE OUTSIDE AND THEN, PROBABLY BY HAND, SLIP-STITCH IN THE DITCH TO CONNECT THIS TO THE DOWN JACKET.
AND I HOPE SHE'LL HAVE MANY MORE TIMES TO USE HER SKI JACKET.

WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A DOUBLE TREAT, IN THAT THE HOSTESSES FOR OUR QUILT SHOW WILL BE MY ORIGINAL VEST CLASS, AND OF COURSE, THEY CALL THEMSELVES THE FIRST INVESTMENT.
AND AT THE SAME TIME, WE'RE GONNA HAVE A CHANCE TO SEE TWO VESTS THAT WE WERE WORKING ON ON THE SET.

THIS WAS DONE BY BETSY FREEMAN, AND I WOULD SAY IT'S A CROSS BETWEEN AN AUTOGRAPH QUILT AND A SIGNATURE QUILT.
WE COULD CALL IT A FAMILY QUILT.
HER DAUGHTER WAS GRADUATING, SO SHE SENT, I WOULD SAY, PROBABLY 8- OR 9-INCH SQUARES OFF TO EVERY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY AND THEN JUST WAITED BY THE MAILBOX FOR EVERYTHING TO COME BACK.

AND SO HOW NICE TO ACCENT IT ON THE BACK OF A VEST.
NOW, ON THE FRONT, PEGGY, YOU'VE GONE AHEAD AND YOU'VE DONE THE STRING QUILTING JUST AT THE BOTTOM OF THE VEST.
AND I LIKE THE WAY YOU'VE USED THE WIDER WIDTH DOWN HERE, AND IT COMES UP NARROWER AT A CERTAIN POINT.
SHE HAS REALLY CREATED A WHOLE ENSEMBLE HERE BY COMBINING THE PANTS FABRIC.
AND THE SAME FABRIC IS REPEATED IN THE TOP OF HER VEST.

THE LADY WHO MADE THIS CARDED HER OWN WOOL FROM SHEEP THAT WAS ON HER PLACE.
THE QUILT WAS MADE BETWEEN 1851 AND 1875.
DURING THAT TIME, SHE RAISED FIVE CHILDREN.
HER HUSBAND WAS KILLED IN THE WAR, AND I'M SURE THIS WAS A SOLACE FOR HER.

IT GIVES A SUGGESTION THAT IT'S DONE.

I RECOGNIZE THE QUILTER'S WORK AND THE COLORS SHE WORKS WITH.
THIS IS NESTOR HARBIN, AND SHE HAS USED THE SHOOFLY PATTERN, BUT SHE'S TURNED IT ON THE OFFSET THIS TIME.
AND THEN SHE'S ALTERNATED WITH A SOLID OLIVE GREEN BLOCK, AND I THINK IT'S A VERY STRONG, VIBRANT QUILT.
IT HAS QUITE AN IMPACT, I'D SAY.
ON THE OTHER HAND, HERE IS BEA WARREN'S QUILT.
AND LOOK AT THE VERY SUBTLE COLORS THAT SHE HAS USED.
IN FACT, SHE HAS TAKEN THE SAME PATTERN, AND SHE'S USED FOUR DIFFERENT COLORS, BUT THE SAME PATTERN.
AND THIS IS OUR CARD TRICKS PATTERN.
AND SHE HAS LAP QUILTED THIS, BUT I LIKE HOW SHE'S DONE THIS.
SHE'S PUT HER FOUR BORDERS ON, AND THEN SHE HAS CREATED A FOUR-PATCH IN THE CENTER.
VERY INTERESTING IDEA.
EVERYONE'S BEEN ADMIRING THIS SAMPLER.
I THINK THE IMPORTANT THING HERE IS THAT SHE'S WORKED IN ONE COLOR, JUST THE BLUE AND WHITE.
AND THEN FOR MORE DEFINITION, SHE'S TAKEN HER PRINT AND GONE AROUND EACH 18-INCH SQUARE WITH A CALICO.
AND IT REALLY SETS OFF EACH BLOCK.
I THINK IT TELLS A LOVELY STORY.
I ALSO LIKE THE LITTLE GIRL AND BOY FACING EACH OTHER IN THE CENTER OF THE QUILT.
THAT'LL LOOK NICE ON THE BED.
IN GETTING SOME ADVICE FROM JEANETTE, WHO HELPED ORGANIZE THIS SHOW, THE ONE THING THAT SHE SAID WAS SO IMPORTANT IS TO START OUT A YEAR AHEAD OF TIME.
IF YOU'RE WELL-PLANNED, I THINK IT HELPS AS FAR AS YOUR PUBLICITY AND LETTING THE PEOPLE IN THE AREA KNOW SO THEY CAN CONTRIBUTE THEIR FAMILY HEIRLOOMS FOR EVERYONE TO SEE.
AND THEN WHEN THE ACTUAL SHOW TIME COMES, YOU CAN SIT BACK AND ENJOY MEETING ALL YOUR FRIENDS, AND IT BECOMES A SOCIAL GATHERING, AND YOU CAN TALK ABOUT THE QUILTS YOU'VE MADE THIS YEAR OR THE ONES THAT HAVE BEEN IN YOUR FAMILY.
THIS HAS BEEN A NON-JURIED SHOW.
SOMETIMES THEY ARE JURIED, AND OF COURSE, THEN YOU FIND OUT THE BEST ONES IN THE SHOW, THE BEST WORKMANSHIP, BUT I THINK IT'S FUN JUST TO SHARE AND LOOK AT ALL THE DIFFERENT VARIETY OF QUILTS.
YOU MIGHT EVEN PUT A SHEET OF PAPER AT THE DOOR AND HAVE PEOPLE PICK OUT THEIR FAVORITES IN CERTAIN CATEGORIES.
AND THAT GIVES YOU AN IDEA OF THE TOP CHOICE AND THE PICK OF THE GROUP, SO TO SPEAK.
ANOTHER THING THAT HAPPENS AT A QUILT SHOW IS, WE GET SO STIMULATED TO GO HOME AND MAKE A NEW QUILT.
IT'S LIKE GOING TO A SYMPOSIUM OR TO A CONVENTION.
WE LEARN NEW IDEAS.
WE LEARN NEW WAYS OF WORKING WITH OUR TEMPLATES AND WITH OUR COLORS, AND IT JUST SPURS US ON TO MAKE ANOTHER QUILT.
ONE OF THE OLDER PIECES HERE IN OUR QUILT SHOW HAS BEEN THIS ONE, DATED 1887, AND IS A FINE EXAMPLE OF CRAZY PATCH WITH ALL THE STAINED GLASS COLORS.
