>> I wanted to be on the radio.
I wanted to be on the radio since I was six.
>> I ended up in Mississippi College.
I met Bruce Owens.
And apparently, he liked my voice.
>> Well, after I graduated from Florida, I went in the Army.
So after I got out of the Army, I started tuning around the dial, and I heard WJDX FM.
And I think the first song I heard on there was “Summer Breeze” by Seals and Crofts.
And I said, “Hmm.
This sounds like a station I’d like to work at."
>> My first job out of college was at Channel 16, WAPT.
My goal was to work at WJDX and WZZQ.
And the program director at the time, Bob Burton said, “I'd like to hire you, "but I don't have anything open on air.
"But we do have an opening in News.
Would you consider that?” I said, “Absolutely.” >> Well, the main thing in radio... well, in life, for that matter... timing is everything.
I was playing at Zodiac.
It’s a club in Jackson.
Somebody had said, “Man, I think they might be looking for somebody at this radio station.” I went down and I got hired because Bruce Owen was leaving the station.
My timing, that’s what I'm saying, timing is everything in life.
I got the job.
>> I started through the Junior Achievement Program.
I just kept showing up, and got to be friends with everybody there, and just wanted to work there with all my heart, and eventually figured out how to get employed there, which was to say I'll work for free.
And of course, they'll hire you quick when you say that.
>> I applied as both a deejay and as a newscaster.
It turns out they only had an opening for a newsperson.
And so they offered it to me and I took it.
