Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipWe are kicking off our very first episode here on the brand new campus of Helen Marie Smith Elementary School, home of the Superstars!
Now, this is one of three replacement schools opening this year.
I was lucky enough to get a tour of this beautiful new campus, and something that really caught my attention: the room we're in right now.
Welcome to the Star Lounge.
(Dawn Blinder) Welcome to the Star Lounge.
Congratulations!
(Melany) When kids come here, they feel like it's like a dream.
-The Star Lounge is a dream come true for students like Melany, a 2nd grader at Helen Marie Smith Elementary School.
-This room is so fun and stuff.
-In charge of designing this fun, interactive incentive room... -Here's some charms.
[children gasp] You can look through those.
-...School Counselor Mrs.
Blinder.
-So part of MTSS, which stands for our Multi-Tiered System of Supports, and they help fund the room.
And you can design it in your own way with the funds that they give you to meet the needs of your school.
We have a lot of STEM activities and building and creativity, and I like the integration of that within the room, too.
-On Fridays, each teacher selects two students who are then invited to visit the Star Lounge.
(student) I can't believe we go to Star Lounge.
-Students want to be motivated to make a choice and be recognized for that.
And when they come in here, they know that it's special for them.
-In the Star Lounge, it's playtime... (student) I'm going to wash you first, pig.
-...sprinkled with positive affirmations... -My favorite pillow is "Be Brave."
-...and important life lessons.
-Great job, everybody!
That is why you earn time in here, because you make really good choices.
-What make this room so special, there's, like, a lot of signs of like "Be Kind," and make sure you're, like, not mad or sad, because there's a rug that, to not feel sad.
And there's a lot of feelings in that rug.
-What are you feeling today?
-I am feeling happy.
-You can't help but feel happy the moment you set foot in the Star Lounge.
-You did it!
Great.
Oh, my goodness!
-You'll witness new friendships being made.
(student) And then I put two scoops in there.
-We're superstars!
-And these little superstars are creating special memories to last a lifetime.
-Every time I come to the Star Lounge, it just makes my smile bright.
-Good job, everybody!
Congratulations on making it to the Star Lounge.
Bye.
I'll see you later.
-So cool!
You'll want to stick around.
Joining us in a bit, Principal Jennifer Richards, who's going to show us what else makes Helen Marie Smith Elementary School so very special.
