I'm so excited, because there's a big event happening at my school today!

It's Camp Day.

And, we're gonna spend the whole day outside with sleeping bags, tents, snacks, and lots of fun games!

(bell ringing) Wha-?

There's Barry!

I wonder if he's gonna be camping with us, too.

Anyway, I gotta go, but I'll see you there!

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] I just love camping!

I remember going with my Papi when I was a little bell.

Ohhh!

So many great memories!

We would go fishing, grill hamburgers and hot dogs.

Well?

(laughs) He would grill them.

I would just eat them!

Then we would roast marshmallows, and make s'mores by the campfire.

Ahhh!

That sure was fun.

I think I'll join in on Camp Day and set up my tent.

I still have one, you know!

Let's see.

(plop!)

First, we start with the big pole.

And, then-- No, wait.

Um?

The stakes go in the ground first, and then-?

Hmm... Well, uh?

You better get on over to the athletic field.

They're getting started over there.

I'm sure that by the time you get back, I'll have it ready!

Go on, hurry!

¡Apúrense!

(bell chiming) (playful horn honking) - Welcome, campers!

I'm Miss Kristina and I am so excited for our Camp Day.

It's so cool being able to teach outside today, and being outdoors is always so much more fun, right?

There's so much to do when you're camping, like going on fun hikes, putting up tents, telling scary stories, and singing songs around the campfire with family and friends.

You know, modern camping can be traced back to the mid-1800s, that's the 19th century, when people traveled by horse and wagon.

After a long day, they would camp together, sit around campfires at night to eat and just relax.

And, that's kind of what we're gonna do today.

But, first, we're gonna read a story that takes us on a family camping trip.

It's called "My Campout," and it's written by Jordan Foster.

(reads the book) "My family went camping.

"I packed my own backpack.

"I had a flashlight, a toothbrush, and a raincoat.

"Raindrops fell as we made camp, "I opened my backpack and put on my raincoat.

"When it stopped, I saw a rainbow.

"At sunset, we went out on the lake in a rowboat.

"We caught a giant catfish.

"Later, we made a campfire to cook dinner.

"We ate hotdogs and catfish.

"At nighttime, we slept out in the moonlight.

"It was a wonderful trip.

I hope we go camping again!"

Cooking catfish over a campfire?!

That sounds so cool!

You know, I've never tried that before, but it's always good to try new things, right?

And, maybe you've never camped before either, but I think you might like it.

It's a lot of fun.

There are a lot of campsites to choose from.

Some are in the forest among the trees; others are near the beach with the nice ocean breeze.

You can also camp in the desert, or the mountains where you can see more stars than you can even imagine.

And, you know what?

You can even go camping in your own backyard.

(bell ringing) Oh, there's Barry the Bell!

I wonder how his tent is coming along.

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] Well, as you can see, I'm having a little bit of a problem!

This isn't quite turning out like the picture on the instructions.

Not at all!

I think I'm gonna need to start all over again... from scratch!

Okay, while you head back over to join Eddie, I'm gonna keep workin' on this.

But don't worry, I got this.

I got it!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - [Eddie] Here we are!

Camp Day has finally started!

And, to make sure we have everything we need, I've got a camping checklist right here.

First on my list is a sleeping bag, un saco de dormir.

This is to sleep in and it keeps you warm at night.

Another important item on my list is a tent, una carpa, it's like a little house.

You gotta have somewhere to sleep, right?

The tent is like our home away from home.

It provides you with shelter, privacy, and a place to keep all our camping gear.

Next up: a flashlight, una linterna.

We need this so we can see outside at night.

It's also fun to use this when you're telling scary stories!

And, two very important things on the list are sunscreen and a hat!

These help you from getting sunburned.

It's very important to protect your skin when you're outside.

And, even if it's cloudy, you can still get burned.

And, if you've ever had a sunburn, you know, que no es bueno, not good.

And, the last thing you need to bring is your adventure-ready attitude!

There are so many great activities to enjoy when you're camping.

My favorite is going on a hike con mi familia.

The great outdoors is an amazing way to bring people together.

(playful horn honking) (bell chiming) - [Barry] Hey!

This wasn't so bad after all!

(mischievous music) Oh, no.

Wait a minute!

Ugh?!

Puh-leeeze!

I built this thing upside down!

(whimpers) Oh, no!

Oh, no!

Okay.

Well?

While I try to fix this, uh, "little issue," why don't you take a hike over to the meeting area, where I hear there's a pretty tasty activity going on!

I hope they save me something!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - [Miss Kristina] One of the best things about camping is getting to make memories with your friends.

So, for this next activity, I decided to invite one of our friends to join us.

It's Principal Ted!

Come on, let's go!!

(playful horn honking) - [Principal Ted] I really love Camp Day, and it feels great to get out of the office and be here with you!

You know, one of my favorite things about going camping is making s'mores.

So, I thought it might be fun to make some together.

They're really easy to make, and they are super tasty!

First, you take a graham cracker and you break it in half, and set it down.

But, you gotta be careful because it could crumble if you don't do it just right.

Next, you take a piece of chocolate and put it on your graham cracker, just like this.

Okay.

Now, you might need to ask a grownup for some help with this next part.

Take a marshmallow and put it on the end of a roasting stick and once it's attached, all you gotta do is hold it over the campfire until it gets nice and brown.

But, be careful!

Don't leave it there too long because it will burn.

It looks like it needs just a little bit longer.

(fire crackling) And, there it is!

I think it looks great!

It's ready.

It's perfect!

Now, all we have to do now is put the marshmallow on top of the chocolate.

And, for our very last step, place the other half of the graham cracker right on top, and squish it down just a little bit.

And, Ta-da!!

There you go.

Now, that's a s'more!

Mmm!!

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] Those s'mores look delicious!

Maybe they'll have one or two left over!

Hm-mmm!

Anyway, I couldn't quite figure out my "tent problem," so I found a new solution: A hammock!

¡Una hamaca!

Can't go wrong with that!

Hah!

This has been an awesome Camp Day!

¡Increíble!

Let's review some of the things we learned and the great fun and amazing memories we made.

(tired sigh) All that tent building sure did make me sleepy.

And, this hammock is so cozy.

♪ I think I'll just... (Barry snoring) ♪ (playful horn honking) - [Miss Kristina] We've had so many great and fun activities today.

First, we learned about how much fun camping can be in the story we read, "My Campout."

"At sunset, we went out on the lake in a rowboat.

We ate hotdogs and catfish."

And, remember Barry?

Poor guy!

He had a few "challenges" dealing with his tent today, didn't he?

(riendo) Pero ya saben cómo es, ¿verdad?

Luego, preparábamos s'mores junto a la fogata.

Primero... empezamos con el poste grande, y luego, eh... ah, no, no, no.

Espera...primero clavamos las estacas en el suelo, y luego... Hmm... Ja, ja ja... Bueno, quizás sería mejor que se apuren ustedes y vayan a la cancha para el comienzo del campamento.

¡Estoy seguro que cuando regresen, tendré esta carpa armada!

(riendo) Ok, palo, estacas... ahh.

Ay!, ay, ay!

(sonido de campana) (bocina jugetona) - [Maestra Berenice] Hola campistras, y ¡bienvenidos!

Yo soy la maestra Berenice y estoy muy emocionada porque hoy, ¡es el día de campamento!

Me encanta poder enseñar aquí afuera, y estar al aire libre siempre es más divertido, ¿verdad?

¡Hay tantas cosas para hacer cuando estás acampando, podemos ir en caminatas divertidas, armamos carpas, hacemos cuentos espantosos, y nos juntamos cerca de una fogata para cantar canciones con amigos y familia!

El acampar, como se conoce hoy en día, comenzó a mediados del siglo diecinueve - the 19th century - cuando la gente viajaba en caballo y carretón.

Todos acampaban juntos y se juntaban cerca de las fogatas por la noche para comer y compartir con sus amigos.

Y hoy vamos a leer un libro que nos lleva en un viaje familiar como esos.

Se llama "Mi acampada", escrita por Jordan Foster.

Nunca lo he cocinado asi, pero siempre es bueno probar cosas nuevas, ¿verdad?

Y si nunca has tenido la oportunidad de ir a acampar, creo que te va a gustar, porque es muy divertido.

Hay muchos sitios donde puedes ir a acampar.

Algunos están en el bosque entre los árboles, otros cerca de la playa con la brisa del mar, y también en el desierto - o en las montañas - con el cielo lleno de estrellas.

¿Y sabes qué?

¡Incluso, hasta puedes acampar en el patio o jardín de tu propia casa!

(sonido de campana) ¡Oh, ahí está Barry!

Vamos a ver cómo le va con su carpa.

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry] Bueno, como pueden ver, ¡estoy teniendo un pequeño problemita con esto!

Eh, no está saliendo exactamente como la imagen en las instrucciones.

Y otra cosa muy importante, es una carpa, ¡a tent!

Es como una casita - un lugar privado, donde dormimos.

También nos da refugio y un lugar donde guardar todo este equipo.

¡Otra cosa que necesitamos es una linterna, "a flashlight!"

Para poder ver - por la noche.

¡Y es muy buena para contar los cuentos espantosos!

Y otras dos cosas - muy importantes son; bloqueador solar y un sombrero.

Estas cosas te protegen del sol, para que no te quemes.

Incluso, aunque esté nublado, todavía te puede quemar el sol.

Y si alguna vez has sufrido de un "sunburn", ¡ya sabes que duele mucho!

It is not good!

¡Y lo último que debes de traer, es tu deseo aventurero!

Hay mucho que hacer y disfrutar cuando estás acampando.

Mi actividad favorita es ir en caminatas con mi familia, porque podemos explorar juntos .

¡Estar al aire libre es una forma increíble de unir a la gente!

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry ¡Oye, al fin y al cabo, esto no me fue tan mál!

(música traviesa) Hey!

(música traviesa) Ah, wait a minute!

¡Espera!

¡Monté la carpa al revés!

Mientras yo trato de resolver este "problemita," ustedes tomen una caminata hacia el campo deportivo.

Decidí invitar a una persona muy especial - es una de nuestras amigas, la Señora Marissa.

¡Vamos!

¡Y qué bien se siente estar aquí afuera con ustedes!

Saben, que una de mis cosas favoritas de acampar es hacer - y comer - s'mores.

¡Y siempre es más divertido cuando los preparamos juntos - con amigos!

Son facilísimos de hacer, y super, super deliciosos.

Primero, tomamos una galleta Graham, la partimos por la mitad, así.

¡Pero con cuidado, porque se pueden romper en pedacitos pequeños!

Y, la ponemos en la mesa.

Después, tomas un trocito de chocolate, y lo pones sobre una galleta, así.

Y, ahora quizás para esta próxima parte, necesitas ayuda de un adulto.

Cojes un bon bon - a marshmallow - y lo pones en la punta de un palo - para asar.

♪ Hmm, ya que lo tengas bien pegado, lo aguantas así - sosteniéndolo sobre la fogata hasta que se dore bien bonito.

¡Pero ten cuidado, eh!

No lo dejes que se queme.

(fuego crepitando) Hmm, solo necesita un poquitito más... (jadeando) ¡Ya parece que está!

¡Ah, está perfecto!

Solo nos falta ponerlo ahora encima del chocolate.

♪ Y para este último paso, poner otra galleta encima, así.

Lo vamos a aplastar un poquitito, y... (gasps) ¡Ta-daa!

¡Ahí está!

¡Esta listo!

¡Mmm!

¡Eso sí que es un "s'more"!

¡Delicioso!

¡Mmm!

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry] ¡Esos s'mores de veras se ven bien sabrosos!

¡Mm!

¡Mm!

A lo mejor les sobró uno que otro, ¿eh?

(riendo) Bueno, de todos modos, como no pude resolver por completo el "problemita" de mi carpa, si encontré otra solución: ¡Una hamaca!

¿Y saben?

Este día de acampar no solamente resultó bastante divertido, sino que también - ¡fue increíble!

Vamos a echar un vistazo a las cosas que aprendimos, y memorias que creamos hoy.

(bostezando) ¡Ay!

Toda esa actividad - montando mi carpa - me dio un poquito de sueño... ja ja.

Y esta hamaca, se siente tan a gusto... que quizás... sim...ple... men...te... (Barry roncando) ♪ (bocina jugetona) - [Maestra Berenice] Hoy ha sido un día lleno de actividades bien divertidas.

- Y Eddie nos mostró varias de las cosas que necesitamos cuando vamos a acampar.

- El acampar y las aventuras al aire libre, pueden ser muy buenas.

Alegran a la gente y nos hace sentir más unidos.

Vayan a acampar cuando puedan y se van a dar cuenta que estar con amigos y familia, compartiendo experiencias nuevas y divertidas, pueden ser la parte más importante de acampar.

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry] Resulta que Eddie si hizo un s'more, ¡especialmente para mí!
