♪ (playful horn honking) - [Eddie] I have to write a report on what I wanna be when I grow up.

I think I wanna be a firefighter (siren wailing) (horn honking) or maybe a police officer (siren wailing) because both of them help people.

But, I might wanna be a veterinarian because they help animals, (bird chirping) (dog barking) and I sure love animals.

But, I also love to cook.

My abuela says I'd be a great chef.

And, maybe I wanna open a restaurant one day and have all the people from the neighborhood eat delicious food.

It would be fun to be a soccer coach, (whistle tweeting) or a mechanic, (car starting) or a-?

(sighs) This assignment's gonna be harder than I thought.

(bell ringing) (gasps) Uh oh!

School's starting.

Well, for right now, I better be a good student and get to class.

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] You know, ever since I was a little, itty-bitty bell, I've always known I wanted to be a school bell.

It's a family tradition passed down for generations.

I love being a school bell.

I get to hang around campus all day, be a part of the action, and keep everyone on time.

Don't get me wrong.

It can be a lot of pressure, but it's good to be of service.

But, enough about me.

Why don't you head on over to Miss Gwen's classroom to see what all the commotion's about.

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - Okay, okay, everyone!

Please don't all talk at once!

I can't understand what you're trying to tell me.

(stick figures buzzing) (gasps) Oh, hi!

I'm Miss Gwen, and these are some of my friends.

(stick figures buzzing) They have something they want to talk to me about, but I'm having a real hard time trying to figure out what they're trying to say.

(stick figures buzzing) Commu, com, (chimes ringing) community!

Oh!

That's what you were trying to say.

Community!

A community is a place where different groups of people live.

And, the people in communities have a lot of things in common.

They might go to the same schools, shop in the same stores, work for the same companies, play on the same teams, and may have many other things in common.

They can also help each other and solve problems together.

Today's story is all about those community helpers.

It's called "My Community," and it's written by Dr. Josephine Baker with illustrations by Eduardo Ramirez.

(page rustling) (register beeping) (reading) "The cashier at the store rings up our groceries.

(bell dings) "Mom is always surprised by how much they cost.

"I can't wait to eat the food!

(page rustling) (drill whirring) "The dentist makes sure that my teeth are healthy.

"He tells me not to eat too much candy.

(page rustling) "I broke my arm.

"The doctor took an x-ray.

"He put a cast on my arm so that it would heal properly.

(page rustling) (siren wailing) (horn honking) "The firefighter drives a big red truck.

"He puts out fires and saves people's lives.

"Don't play with fire or you could get burned!

Ouch!

(page rustling) "The librarian "helps me find books that are fun to read.

"I go to the library once a week "to find new books to read.

"When I make too much noise, "the librarian says, 'shhhh.'

(page rustling) "The mail carrier delivers the mail to me and my family.

"I love to get letters and packages.

(birds chirping) (page rustling) "The nurse makes sure that I do everything "that the doctor tells me to do.

"She is patient and kind when I feel sick.

(page rustling) (siren wailing) "The police officer helps keep me safe.

"I like to see the lights on top of his car "and hear his siren.

(page rustling) "My teacher helps me learn.

"I love to go to school.

"My teacher reads books, sings songs, "and plays games with me.

(page rustling) "Sometimes we go to a restaurant.

The waiter takes my order and brings me my food."

Wow!

(page rustling) There were so many community helpers in that story.

You know?

I'm a community helper, too, because I'm a teacher.

I help young students learn so they can grow up and become community helpers, too.

I feel good about what I do.

(bell ringing) Oh!

And, there's another community helper, Barry the Bell.

He helps us get to our classrooms on time.

Barry, where are we off to next?

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] Well, I'm glad you asked that because you are in luck.

We're gonna go to that great community hub, otherwise known as the library, with Eddie!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - [Eddie] In doing research for my report about what I want to be when I grow up, I definitely learned that I want to help people in the community.

So, maybe I'll look up "community helpers" and see what pops up.

(mouse clicks) Oh!

This looks interesting.

Let's check it out.

- [Narrator] Community helpers are important because they provide services that people need.

These are some of the essential jobs that communities need to keep going.

Police officers, firefighters, lifeguards, and crossing guards all work to help keep people safe.

Doctors and nurses help people stay healthy.

Veterinarians help keep our pets healthy.

Teachers and professors help students to learn.

Construction workers help build and repair things, like buildings, bridges, and roads.

Plumbers and electricians help to make sure that there's plenty of water and electricity for everything we need.

Postal workers help by processing and delivering all of our mail and important packages.

Trash collectors pick up our trash and help us to recycle.

Farmers grow our food.

Fishermen catch our food.

And, servers deliver our food.

Bus drivers, taxi drivers, and pilots help us to go places both near and far.

Scientists work to find cures for diseases and create new inventions that help our communities in all kinds of ways!

♪ - [Eddie] This is really useful information, and it's given me a lot to think about, but I'm still not sure what I wanna be when I grow up.

Hmm.

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] Well, when I grow up-- Hey, wait a minute.

I am grown up, aren't I?

(laughs) But, I still feel full of energy and excitement just like I did when I was a little bell.

But now, my ring is filled with purpose because I help my community here at school.

I keep the time, I ring proudly, and I'm happy to be of service sending you to your learning adventures.

In fact, I'm gonna do that right now!

Why don't you get back over to Miss Gwen's classroom?

Because, there's still quite a buzz going on over there!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - When I'm not teaching in the classroom, my favorite thing to do is beekeeping and harvesting my own honey.

Bees are fascinating.

They have a community all of their own.

Wanna see?

(bees buzzing) A community of bees is called a colony, and all the bees in the colony have a special job.

The queen bee lays the eggs.

(bees buzzing) The drone bees fertilize the eggs.

(bees buzzing) And, the worker bees make all the honey.

(bees buzzing) There are a lot of other communities in the animal kingdom.

My bee friends here can help me list some of them.

(bees buzzing) A community of fish is called a school.

(water burbling) A community of lions is called a pride.

(lion roars) A community of camels is called a caravan.

(bees buzzing) A community of caterpillars is called an army.

(bees buzzing) A community of baboons is called a troop.

(baboon screeching) A community of dolphins is called a pod.

(dolphin clicking) A community of coyotes is called a band.

(bees buzzing) A community of ducks is called a flock.

(ducks quacking) And, a community of horses is called a team.

(horse neighing) In your home, a community of humans is called a family.

(bees buzzing) Thanks for the honey, Bee Colony!

It tastes so sweet!

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - Um?

I think one of (bee buzzing) those bees escaped the hive.

(bee buzzing) (Barry chuckles) Go back to your colony, worker bee.

Your community must be wondering where you are.

Yeah, that's right.

You're an important part of your community.

And they need you, too.

(bee buzzing) Ah, much better.

Okay, why don't you go on back to class now.

It's time to review all the magnificent stuff we learned today!

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) - [Miss Gwen] Hey, Community!

How's it goin'?

(stick figures buzzing) Today, we learned what a community is.

And then, we read a story called "My Community."

"The firefighter drives a big red truck.

(siren wailing) (horn honking) "He puts out fires and saves people's lives.

"Don't play with fire or you could get burned!

Ouch!"

And, as Eddie was researching different types of jobs, he learned about community helpers.

- [Narrator] Community helpers are important because they provide services that people need.

These are some of the essential jobs that communities need to keep going.

- [Miss Gwen] Next, we discovered the different types of animal communities.

A community of fish is called a school.

(water burbling) A community of lions is called a pride.

(lion roars) A community of camels is called a caravan.

(bees buzzing) A community is filled with people who do different jobs that help each other.

These community helpers are really important people.

When you go places in your community, like stores, libraries, parks, and even your school, notice how many community helpers are there to make it a better place.

I think you'll find that community helpers are everywhere.

You, too, can be a community helper by being friendly and kind.

It takes caring people to make a great community so we can all live, learn, work, and grow together.

(playful horn honking) (bell ringing) - [Barry] I am a proud community helper here to tell you that this has been one inspiring day!

I wanna give a shout-out to all of the people in this school, in this town, in this country, and in this world who make it a better place for all of us to enjoy.

We couldn't do it without you.

(bell ringing) (playful horn honking) ♪ - [Eddie] Well?

Even though I don't know exactly what I wanna be when I grow up, I do know that I wanna be a community helper, and that's something I can start doing today, ahora mismo.

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry] Sabes, desde que era una campanita, chiquitita, siempre supe que quería ser una campana escolar.

Es una tradición familiar ya por muchas generaciones.

Me encanta ser una campana escolar.

Puedo estar en el plantel escolar todo el día, ser parte de las actividades y ayudar a que todos lleguen a tiempo.

Claro, que a veces puede ser mucha responsabilidad, pero es muy bueno poder servir a esta comunidad.

Soy la Señora Erica y estos son algunos de mis amigos.

(figuras de palo zumbando) Parece que me quieren decir algo muy importante, pero no les entiendo.

¡Si - claro, eso es lo que me están diciendo!

¡Comunidad!

Una comunidad es un lugar donde viven diferentes grupos de personas.

Gente en comunidades comparten muchas cosas; pueden ir a las mismas escuelas, comprar en las mismas tiendas, trabajar en las mismas empresas, participar en los mismos equipos deportivos, y hacer muchas de las mismas cosas.

También pueden ayudarse uno al otro, y así, resolver problemas juntos.

El libro que vamos a leer hoy nos ayuda entender la gente que nos ayudan en las comunidades.

Se llama Mi Comunidad escrita por la Dra.

Josephine Baker, e ilustrada por Eduardo Ramírez.

(el papel cruje) Hubo tantos ayudantes comunitarios en ese libro.

¿Y saben qué?

Yo también soy ayudante de la comunidad porque soy maestra.

Yo ayudo a estudiantes jóvenes - como tú, aprender para que puedan crecer y convertirse también en ayudantes de la comunidad.

A mí me encanta lo que hago.

(sonido de campana) Y allí está otro ayudante de la comunidad, la campana Barry.

Él siempre nos ayuda a llegar a nuestras clases a tiempo.

Barry, ¿a dónde vamos ahora?

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry] Bueno, me alegro que me hayas preguntado eso, y que suerte tienes, ¿eh?

Porqué vamos a visitar a ese informativo, y muy famoso, gran centro comunitario conocido como... ¡la BIBLIOTECA, con Eddie!

(sonido de campana) (bocina jugetona) - [Eddie] En preparando este reporte sobre lo que quiero ser cuando sea mayor, me doy cuenta que quiero hacer algo para ayudar a la gente de me comunidad.

Así, que voy a buscar AYUDANTES COMUNITARIOS, (clic del mouse) a ver qué aparece.

Ahh, esto se ve interesante... a ver que dice.

- [Locutor] Los ayudantes comunitarios son importantes porque brindan servicios que necesita la gente.

Aquí están unos de los trabajos esenciales que ayudan a nuestras comunidades mantener orden y a funcionar bien.

Los oficiales de policía, bomberos, salvavidas y guardias de cruce trabajan para mantenernos seguros.

Los médicos, enfermeras y enfermeros ayudan a mantener la salud de la gente.

Los veterinarios ayudan que nuestras mascotas también estén saludables.

Las profesoras y maestros ayudan estudiantes a aprender.

Los trabajadores de la construcción construyen y reparan cosas como edificios, puentes y carreteras.

Los plomeros y electricistas aseguran que tengamos el agua y electricidad necesaria.

Los carteros y carteras entregan nuestro correo y los paquetes importantes.

Los basureros recogen nuestra basura y nos ayudan a reciclarla.

Los agricultores cultivan alimentos.

Los pescadores capturan nuestra comida.

Y los meseros y meseras nos sirven y entregan nuestra comida.

Conductores de autobuses, taxistas y pilotos nos llevan a destinos cercanos y lejanos.

Los científicos trabajan para descubrir nuevas maneras de curar enfermedades, e inventan otras cosas nuevas que también ayudan a nuestras comunidades de muchas maneras.

♪ - [Eddie] ¡Wow, esta información es muy buena.

¡Y me dio mucho en qué pensar!

Pero, todavía no estoy seguro de qué quiero ser cuando crezca.

Hmm.

(bocina jugetona) (sonido de campana) - [Barry] Cuando yo crezca... wait a minute, espera... ya soy adulto, ¿qué no?

Pero todavía me siento como cuando era una campanita chiquita, lleno de emoción y energía.

La única diferencia es que ahora mi timbre suena con más autoridad, y propósito.

Porque mi trabajo es ayudar a mi comunidad aquí en la escuela.

Mantengo el tiempo.

Sueno mi timbre con orgullo, y estoy feliz de poder servir con enviarlos a sus aventuras escolares.
