Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- House with a History started when my husband, Jack and I went on a weekend to visit an open house.
I'd seen the advertisement in th and it just intrigued me.
This wonderful house with a Japa look to it and feel.
It was the Hart House.
- We just thought it was amazing that there's like this house her The gardens, the house, the arch both inside and out.
- And we were walking around.
I remember we were in the living room.
- And Marla then said: - You know, this would make a wo series, a house or houses that had interesting architectur and also a wonderful history.
- And we talked about it some more, I talked with it with my staff, and we came up with this idea for a House with - Hello, Im Marla Carr, and wel House with a History.
We like to look at houses, but tied to that, and what makes so very interesting is the histo And as people love houses, I think there are a lot of peopl that love history even more.
And if you live in Nevada and if you live in Reno, you really enjoy seeing the hist come alive in these homes that the wealthy and the not so wealthy built.
- Marla produced the show in the first year, and most of the seco And then Ethan Salter took over as producer.
I edited the first year and at the very top we have that open the House with that was an animated opening and that was created by one of o members, Bonnie MaClean.
She had said, can I work on this for animating the building of th And sure, go ahead, give it a sh And she came back in with what we used in the show, a I think it just set the right to in saying house with a history.
As you see this little house get and animated into fruition.
There are so many wonderful memo that I have from a House with a Interviewing people like Mella Harmon.
She had so much knowledge and was so willing to share it.
And then talking with the homeow Oh, they were so proud of what they had managed to pres and what they had done for this architectural preservation.
And they had delightful stories because I had done the research, but they had done more.
- One of my favorite memories is in the field shooting, helping assist in the And I remember at Thunderbird Lo that was a really fascinating pl to film.
inside of the house and then down in the tunnels.
We just had a great time exploring that particular house and the challenges it presented from a filming pers - The other thing I enjoyed specifically was the research.
I tend to be a researcher, I wan to learn about the house and every time I researched the and researched the architect, I found out more and more about Nevada history and I just loved The crew that worked with KNPB at the time was absolutely marvelous.
They were always willing to go the extra mile and there were extra miles, trus in filming this particular architectural detail or listenin to what I was saying in my scrip and going back to have to film i There was just so much.
And the homes themselves.
Oh, they were glorious.
Nevada's history.
Nevada has such a wonderful, div interesting history.
The whole experience was probably one of my lifetime - I am very pleased by people still watching it and people still saying, can there be more?
Because it speaks to two things: it speaks to the quality of the work that we did and it had a lasting impression; it speaks to people who want to learn more about our area, about historic houses.
Now they dont have to be houses governors or houses of businessm it can be simple houses and we had a few of those where the houses were there for people either rent short ter Reno because it was a divorce ca but also just because it was the simplicity of the house and yet the person who built it and owned it had a very interesting backgroun so I think theres that balance of history and architecture that people are fascinated by.
- And you never get tired of seeing those details.
You never get tired of hearing about the history.
And you never get tired of watching these homeowners just fall in love with the archi the building, and the people who built them.
