(upbeat music) This is Joe with Tree Pittsburgh, and this is my Teachable Moment.
Did you know that some of the trees around you may be older than the city of Pittsburgh?
Today I'm gonna show you how to estimate the age of a tree.
You'll need a tape measure, a calculator, an age chart, and a tree.
We need to measure up 54 inches from the ground.
Measure around the trunk of the tree, and divide that number by pi, which is 3.14.
Take that number and multiply it by the growth rate number for your tree, and that's the age of your tree.
I've calculated this Pin Oak to be 82 years old.
Be sure to get outside and explore the trees in your park, school, or neighborhood - [Narrator] IQ Smart Parent Teachable Moments are funded in part by the Grable Foundation.
