QUILT FESTIVAL ANNUALLY ATTRACTS OVER 20,000 VISITORS WHO ENJOY THE EXHIBITS, AND MORE THAN 2,000 QUILT-LOVERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD REGISTER FOR THE SHOW'S 100-PLUS CLASSES AND LECTURES.
EACH YEAR QUILT MARKET AND QUILT FESTIVAL WELCOME VISITORS FROM ALL 50 STATES AND FROM DIFFERENT FOREIGN COUNTRIES.
TOUR GROUPS FROM JAPAN AND AUSTRALIA ATTEND, AND QUILTERS FROM AS FAR AWAY AS INDIA, NEW ZEALAND, DENMARK, AND WEST GERMANY.
I WAS THERE, TOO, AND SO WAS DOREEN SPECKMANN.
WE HAVE GRABBED DOREEN SPECKMANN RIGHT OFF THE AIRPLANE FROM MADISON, WISCONSIN.
WHAT HAVE YOU GOT HERE TODAY TO SHOW US?
WELL, I BROUGHT ONE FINISHED THING AND A COUPLE OF UNFINISHED, AND MOSTLY UNFINISHED.
I PIECE QUICKER THAN I QUILT.
THIS IS A LITTLE THOUSAND PYRAMIDS THAT I MADE FROM THE SCRAPS OF THE 17-FOOT QUILT I MADE FOR THE QUILTERS, AND I MADE ONE FOR THE DIRECTOR, AND I LIKED IT SO MUCH THAT I MADE ANOTHER ONE FOR MYSELF.
THE FIRST TIME I'VE EVER DUPLICATED A QUILT IN MY LIFE.
BUT THIS WAS MY ONE BRIGHT MOMENT IN THE PERFORMING ARTS UNTIL NOW, YOU KNOW, BUT FOR THE DIRECTOR, THERE WAS ALWAYS ANOTHER PLAY COMING.
OK, ALL RIGHT.
NOW, YOU DO THESE SCRAPS--DO YOU TOTALLY DO SCRAP QUILTS?
IT'S TAKEN ME A LONG TIME.
THE FIRST AT LEAST 3 TIMES I TRIED TO DO A SCRAPBOOK, I KEPT ORGANIZING IT.
IT'S A STRUGGLE.
ANYTIME YOU SEE ANYTHING THAT LOOKS LIKE RANDOM, YOU HAVE TO KNOW THAT I WAS POUNDING MY HEAD AGAINST THE WALL TO MAKE IT LOOK RANDOM.
OK.
THIS ONE IS-- IT'S HARD TO DESCRIBE.
IT'S A RIGHT TRIANGLE ROTATED AND THEN REPEATED, AND YOU GET THESE INTERLOCKING PINWHEELS, AND IT WORKS NO MATTER HOW YOU DO IT.
I'VE DONE 3 OTHER PIECES CALLED "AMERICAN PIE."
THIS IS KIND OF NAMELESS YET.
BUT IT'LL COME TO YOU.
YEAH.
I DON'T KNOW ANY RED AND GRAY FOOD EXCEPT OVERDONE MOLDY SPAGHETTI.
ANYWAY, SO THIS IS QUILT ONE.
OH, A SERIES.
WELL, YEAH.
I DON'T KNOW IF I WORK IN SERIES OR IF I JUST KEEP DOING IT TILL I GET IT RIGHT.
YOU KNOW, IT'S ALL A STATE OF MIND, I THINK.
I DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL AFTER I LOOKED AT A WHOLE BUNCH OF MY QUILTS, BUT I LIKE ANY COLOR SO LONG AS IT'S RED.
AND THIS IS THE SAME QUILT.
THE SAME 3 TEMPLATES WENT TO MAKE IT ALL, AND I THINK THIS ONE MAY BE CALLED CATTYWAMPUS BECAUSE THAT'S HOW I'VE BEEN DESCRIBING IT.
BUT THIS IS THE SAME TRIANGLE TURNED AND TURNED AND TURNED.
AND MORE SPECIAL FABRIC.
ISN'T THAT WONDERFUL?
IT'S ITALIAN.
YEAH.
I BOUGHT 1/2 YARD OF IT--$12 A YARD.
AND YOU CALL THIS YOUR FIREWORKS?
YEAH, FIREWORKS.
IT'S KIND OF A ZIPPY LITTLE PIECE.
IT CERTAINLY IS.
AND YOU'D THINK THAT I'D HAVE A RED AND GREEN HOUSE, BUT I DON'T.
I JUST LIKE THE COLOR.
THIS ONE, IT MAY BE "HEARTS OF SPACE," WHICH IS KIND OF A FUNKY ELECTRONIC MUSIC ON PUBLIC RADIO REAL LATE ON SATURDAY OR SUNDAY NIGHT, BUT ITS OTHER TITLE IS "THE ULTIMATE TEST FOR RED/GREEN COLOR BLINDNESS," AND IT'S THE SAME OLD BLOCK REPEATED OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
GO ON.
LOOK AT THAT.
EVERYONE'S GONNA RECOGNIZE THAT BLOCK, BUT THEY'RE NOT GONNA BELIEVE THIS QUILT.
AND HERE IT IS AGAIN, AND HERE IT IS AGAIN.
I MEAN, ONLY ONE OF THESE WOULD MAKE A DECENT SOFA PILLOW, BUT AS A QUILT IT LOOKS OK.
IT'S WONDERFUL.
OK, AND THIS DOES HAVE PEEKY AND SPIKE?

NOW, PEEKIES AND SPIKE-- THAT MEANS YOU NAME THESE.
I NAME THESE.

I DIDN'T INVENT THEM.
I FEEL SORRY FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE QUILTS AND NOW HAVE TO HAVE PEOPLE CALL THEM PEEKIES AND SPIKE, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT--WHAT DO YOU CALL THIS TRIANGLE?
SO I CALLED IT PEEKY, AND THIS IS SPIKE.
GOOD.
PERSONAL FRIENDS OF YOURS.
I HAVE TRICKY TRIANGLES AND NIGHT AND NOONS, AND HALF NIGHT AND NOONS, AND I DON'T KNOW.
IT KIND OF MAKES SENSE TO ME.
AND THEN THAT FIREWORKS HAS APPEARED AGAIN.
AFTER TRYING ABOUT 3 OR 4 OTHER THINGS.
I JUST WAS SURE THAT OTHER PEOPLE, WHEN THEY MADE A QUILT, IT JUST TURNED OUT THE WAY THEY SAW IT IN THEIR HEAD, AND I HAVE AS MUCH FABRIC LEFT OVER AS I DO.
I SAVE IT ALL IN BOXES THAT WILL PROBABLY BE MY ULTIMATE PIECE WHEN I SEW TOGETHER ALL THE BITS AND PIECES OF LEFTOVER QUILTS.
YOU KNOW, LIKE ALL OF THIS WAS JUST A BUILDUP FOR THAT FINAL.
I HAVEN'T DONE A FOOD QUILT FOR A LONG TIME.
I USUALLY DO FOOD QUILTS MORE-- NAMED FOOD QUILTS MORE WHEN I'M DIETING THAN WHEN I'M NOT, AND SO--BUT THIS ONE JUST HAD TO BE ANTIPASTO.
OH, IT IS.
I SEE IT.
YEAH, AND WE DON'T KNOW IF IT'S PEPPERONI, EGGPLANT AND MUSHROOMS AND ARTICHOKE HEARTS.
NOW TELL ME, YOU'RE ALL BASTED AND READY TO GO.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH THE QUILTING?
DO YOU KNOW THAT AS YOU'RE MAKING IT?
YOU KNOW, YOU'RE ALWAYS THINKING ABOUT IT, BUT I NEVER KNOW WHAT I'M GOING TO DO UNTIL I SIT DOWN TO QUILT, SO I HAVE SOME PLANS, SO I HAVE SOMETHING TO DO, AND I'M GLAD QUILTING TAKES SO LONG BECAUSE WHILE I'M DOING THAT, I'M THINKING OF THE NEXT THING.
I DO PARALLEL LINES A LOT, AND ON A GOOD DAY, I'LL SAY IT'S MY STYLE.
ON A BAD DAY, I'M JUST IN A RUT.
IT'S SO HARD FOR ME TO QUILT CURVES ON TOP OF STRAIGHT PIECES, I'M JUST IN AWE OF PEOPLE WHO DO.

WELL, THIS IS THE LATEST ONE.

I TRIED AT LEAST 6 DIFFERENT STARS IN HERE UNTIL I FOUND THIS ORANGE.
NOW, THIS IS A GAMBLE.
PEOPLE WOULDN'T DO THIS.
I CALLED IT--I ONLY HAD A HALF YARD OF IT, AND I COULDN'T REMEMBER WHY I BOUGHT IT, AND I'D RUN OUT OF ONE OF THE FABRICS, AND I'M CALLING PEOPLE, DESCRIBING THIS FABRIC TO A "T," AND THEY SAID, "YEAH, BUT I WOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT THAT," AND I SAID, "WELL, YOU PROBABLY HAVE PRETTY GOOD TASTE," AND IT DOESN'T GO WITH ANOTHER THING IN THE FABRIC.
WELL, I FINALLY FOUND IT FROM A STORE IN MICHIGAN WHO HAD IT IN HER SALE BUCKET, 3 YARDS FOR $4.50, WHICH MEANT IT WASN'T A HOT MOVER THERE EITHER, AND SO I ONLY NEEDED A HALF YARD, BUT I BOUGHT 6, SO WE HAVE IT AS A BACKING, AND I THINK IT'S A PRETTY GUTSY THING TO USE.
IT'S GUTSY WHAT YOU DID HERE.
THIS IS RADICAL.
OH, YEAH, SHORT-LEGGED, LONG-LEGGED PEEKY AND SPIKE KIND OF, ALMOST.

I KIND OF THOUGHT THEY MIGHT CALL IT TUTTI-FRUTTI STARS, BUT "SEA OF STARS" HAS GOT A LITTLE MORE-- WELL, THIS IS THE EXACT SAME DESIGN AND A LITTLE BIGGER SCALE, AND I MADE IT FOR MY SISTER, AND IT'S TOO BIG FOR HER WALL, SO SHE DOESN'T WANT IT.

I'LL BE GLAD TO TAKE IT OFF YOUR HANDS, DOREEN.

BUT SEE, YOU'VE INCORPORATED THOSE BORDER PRINTS THAT WE DON'T QUITE KNOW HOW TO WORK WITH SOMETIMES, AND YOU DID IT BEAUTIFULLY.
YOU KNOW, I THINK ALL QUILTERS HAVE--WELL, I AM SPEAKING NOW ABOUT COMPULSIVE BEHAVIOR, AND THERE ARE TIMES THAT I LIKE TO GRATIFY IT, AND THAT'S BY MAKING SURE THAT THESE ALL MATCH UP JUST PERFECTLY.
IT'S KIND OF LIKE, "LOOK.
I DID IT."
IT'S A SICKER SIDE OF ME.
BUT YOU KNOW, YOU CAN MAKE YOURSELF CRAZY BEING A PERFECTIONIST.
I'VE BEEN TALKING TO MY CLASSES ABOUT, I WANT TO DO WORK I'M PROUD OF.
I WANT QUILTERS TO COME UP AND SAY, "WELL, AND THE POINTS MEET AND EVERYTHING, AND HER STITCHES ARE NICE," BUT I THINK WE CAN PARALYZE OURSELVES WITH PERFECTION.
OH, I THINK SO.
OUR TOMBSTONE'S GONNA SAY, "AND SHE HAD 12 STITCHES PER INCH."
YEAH, AND I'VE SEEN SOME OF THE MOST BORING QUILTS IN THE WORLD THAT WERE SO PERFECT AND SOME OF THE BEST QUILTS IN THE WORLD THAT WERE WORKMANSHIP STANDARDS THAT I WOULD JUST--"ISN'T THAT AWFUL?"
BUT I THINK I LIKE THE MORE FUN ONES.
WELL, YOU CERTAINLY HAVE JUST TURNED OUT A WONDERFUL ARRAY OF COLOR HERE AND DESIGN, BUT I DO HAVE TO ASK YOU ABOUT THOSE EARRINGS, DOREEN.
WELL, I'M FROM WISCONSIN, THE DAIRY STATE, OF COURSE, AND I'VE OFTEN THOUGHT THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SHOULD SEND ME OUT WITH THESE EARRINGS, BUT THEY HAVEN'T DISCOVERED YET THAT I'M TRAVELING AROUND--BUT ANYWAY, THESE WERE MADE BY A FRIEND OF MINE WHO CUTS THEM FROM WOOD AND PAINTS THEM.

I STARTED IN QUILTING--I TOOK A QUILTING CLASS AT A COMMUNITY COLLEGE JUST FOR SOMETHING TO DO.
I WAS TAKING CARE OF MY MOTHER, WHO WAS ILL, AND I DID TRADITIONAL QUILTS FOR QUITE A FEW YEARS, AND THEN I MET MICHAEL JAMES, AND I ALSO HAD AN ART BACKGROUND.
HE STARTED ME USING MY OWN ART IDEAS BUT USING FABRIC AS A MEDIUM, AND THAT JUST--I JUST WENT CRAZY FROM THERE, AND THE MORE COLOR I CAN FIND, THE HAPPIER I AM.
I JUST LIKE LOTS OF COLOR-- HAPPY, BRIGHT THINGS.
I KNOW YOU TRAVEL TEACHING BECAUSE WE'VE ENJOYED YOUR WORK IN NORTH CAROLINA, AND I LEARNED A LOT FROM YOU.
I LEARNED TO TAKE THAT 360 DEGREES AND TURN LOOSE FROM THAT.
AND THAT WAS A PART OF YOUR "MANDALA" WORK.

THAT WAS MY FIRST BOOK, AND THEN I DID A BOOK SORT OF SIMILAR TO THAT BUT FOR BEGINNERS, "CONTEMPORARY SAMPLER," AND THEN I'VE JUST DONE A BOOK ON 3-DIMENSIONAL DESIGN, WHICH IS WHAT I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT DOING NOW, WORKING TO MAKE IT LOOK AS IF YOU COULD REALLY WALK INTO THE QUILT.

BUT A LOT OF THEM LOOK LIKE THEY HAVE STAIRWAYS AND WALLS.
OH, IT'S EXCITING, AND THEN THE COLOR IS RELATED IN KIND OF GLITZY FABRIC.
IT SHINES, AND NOT LITTLE TEENSY CALICOS ANYMORE.

THE 100% COTTON THEME IS NOT IN MY BOOK.
LAMÉ DOESN'T HAVE ANY COTTON IT, ANY NORMAL FABRIC IN IT.
RIGHT.
I'VE JUST STARTED SILK- SCREENING MY OWN FABRICS BECAUSE I CAN'T FIND THE GRAPHICS THAT I WANT, SO I'M DEVELOPING MY OWN THING.
YOUR AIRPLANES--THAT LEADS ME INTO THIS WONDERFUL WORK YOU DO ON THE AIRPLANE.
TELL ME ABOUT THAT.
WELL, I GOT REAL TIRED OF JUST SITTING ON THE PLANE WAITING TO GET TO THE NEXT QUILT STOP, SO I STARTED CARRYING THESE LITTLE 3-INCH SQUARES DOING REVERSE APPLIQUÉ CIRCLES.
A LITTLE BIT OF HANDWORK TO WORK ON SO I'M NOT WASTING TIME, AND THEN I SEW THEM ALL TOGETHER AND QUILT THEM, AND THEY MAKE JUST FUN LITTLE WALL HANGINGS.
OH, I LOVE THEM.
THEY'RE SPECIAL WALL HANGINGS.
Georgia, voice-over: THE STRONGEST ELEMENT OF KATIE'S WORK IS CERTAINLY COLOR.
I ASKED HER, "WHEN YOU'RE TEACHING, KATIE, HOW DO YOU CONVINCE PEOPLE TO TAKE SUCH RISK AND PUT AN ORANGE NEXT TO A RED?"
WELL, A LOT OF THE COLOR COMBINATIONS I HAVE, IF YOU WOULD THINK ABOUT PUTTING THEM TOGETHER IN ANY OTHER WAY WOULD NOT WORK, BUT I THINK THAT IF YOU DO IT AND YOU DO IT WITH CONVICTION, YOU CAN MAKE ANYBODY BELIEVE THAT IT'S RIGHT.
SO TO JUST PUT IT IN THERE, AND IT WILL CONVINCE THE VIEWER THAT THAT'S THE WAY IT WAS MEANT TO BE, AND IF YOU DO ENOUGH OF IT, THEN IT ALL WORKS OUT.
IT'S JUST BEEN A NICE BRIGHT PIECE THAT ALL FITS TOGETHER RATHER THAN STAYING WITH THE TIMID COLORS AND THE SAFE THINGS.
JUST GO DO IT.
THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A FUN THING WE'RE DOING, SO MAKE IT FUN.
WE NEED TO TAKE KATIE'S ADVICE AND GO FOR IT IN COLOR.
WE HAVE HER TO THANK FOR A LOT OF WONDERFUL, COLORFUL QUILTS.
ANYTIME YOU MAKE A SELECTION OF FABRIC, WHETHER IT'S FOR A DRESS OR FOR QUILTMAKING OR FOR HOME DECORATING, IT'S A BIG DECISION BECAUSE IT INVOLVES TWO OF YOUR MOST PRECIOUS THINGS: TIME AND MONEY.
SO HOW DO YOU SPEND IT?
BEFORE WE GO TO THE COLOR WHEEL, I'D LIKE TO GIVE YOU A FEW POINTERS AND THINGS TO CONSIDER.
FIRST OF ALL, BUY A LOT OF FABRIC.
HOW CAN YOU GAMBLE AND HAVE FUN IF YOU DON'T HAVE A FULL CLOSETFUL?
GO AHEAD AND ORGANIZE IT, PRESHRINK IT, PUT IT INTO THE HUE, THE SPECIAL COLOR--THE REDS, THE GREENS, THE BLUE-- DIVIDE THE TINTS AND THE SHADES, THE LIGHTER FROM THE DARKER.
I WOULD ALSO, THEN, NOT RELY TOTALLY IN FABRIC SELECTION ON PREPRINTED FABRIC COLLECTIONS.
THEY'RE VERY NICE, BUT IT'S MUCH MORE FUN TO INTRODUCE THAT LARGER FLORAL PRINT RATHER THAN KEEPING ALL SMALL CALICOS ALL THE TIME.
YOU COULD ALSO PUT IN A ZINGER, A SURPRISE FABRIC, A BIG RED PAISLEY TO GO IN WITH THOSE LITTLE PRINTS.
DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE GEOMETRICS--THE STRIPES...AND THE PLAIDS...AND THE LITTLE CHECKS.
SOMETIMES EVEN WHEN THEY'RE PUT ON THE BIAS, THEY ADD A LOT OF INTEREST.
VARY THE SCALE OF THE FABRICS THAT YOU CHOOSE.
AND THEN LOOK AT THEM AT A DISTANCE.
DON'T SELECT FABRICS UP CLOSE IN COLOR.
SQUINT OR, BETTER STILL, IF YOU'RE NEARSIGHTED, TAKE YOUR GLASSES OFF.
THAT'S WHAT I DO.
AND DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE GEOMETRICS.
REMEMBER THAT YOUR SELECTION IS A LONG COMMITMENT.
YOU'RE GONNA BE STARING AT THAT FABRIC, QUILTING ON IT, FOR A LONG TIME.
A LOT OF THE COLOR SCHEMES THIS SEASON SEEM TO BE GOING TOWARDS THE LIGHTER SHADES.
PERHAPS IT'S THE DHURRIE RUGS THAT DO THAT.
LET'S CONSIDER THE COLOR WHEEL.
WE HAVE 3 PRIMARY COLORS-- OUR RED, OUR BLUE, AND OUR YELLOW.
THE SECONDARY COLORS ARE THE VIOLET, THE GREEN, AND THE ORANGE.
NOW, IF YOU MIX THOSE COLORS TOGETHER, YOU GET 6 MORE COLORS, AND THEY'RE YOUR INTERMEDIARY COLORS-- THE RED-ORANGE, THE RED-VIOLET, THE BLUE-VIOLET, THE BLUE-GREEN, THE YELLOW-GREEN, AND THE YELLOW-ORANGE.
IF WE WOULD CONSIDER 7 DIFFERENT COLOR SCHEMES, IT MIGHT HELP YOU IN CONSIDERING WHAT FABRICS TO CHOOSE.
TO DO THAT, I'M GOING TO BE USING A SETUP OF POSSIBLY A NEW BORDER SELECTION FOR ME.
I ACTUALLY FOUND THIS ON THE TILE FLOOR OF A FRIEND'S ENTRANCEWAY IN HER FLOOR.
AND WHAT I'VE DONE IS TO DRAW THAT PATTERN OFF ONTO THE GRID GRIP, THEN SIMPLY CUT IT APART, IRONED IT ON THE BACK OF MY FABRIC, AND THEN CUT IT RIGHT UP TO THE PAPER.
AND THEN I GLUED IT BACK TOGETHER.
WE'LL START WITH OUR MONOCHROMATIC COLOR SCHEME, AND THAT WOULD BE ANY ONE OF THE COLORS BUT DIFFERENT VALUES AND SHADES.
I HAVE CHOSEN BLUE.
SO WE WOULD START WITH 3 DIFFERENT SHADES OF BLUE.
IN THIS INSTANCE, I'VE GOT A DARK, A MEDIUM, AND A LIGHT, AND IT CREATES A NICE CONTRAST TO THE BLUE HUE, VERSUS ONES THAT ARE CLOSER TOGETHER AND I DON'T THINK REALLY CREATE AS MUCH INTEREST, SO I WOULD SUGGEST HAVING A STRONG CONTRAST WITH OUR MONOCHROMATIC COLOR SCHEME.
THE SECOND ONE IS THE COMPLEMENTARY, AND THOSE WOULD BE OPPOSITES ON THE COLOR WHEEL--RED AND GREEN OR BLUE AND ORANGE.
WHEN WE THINK OF, OF COURSE, RED AND GREEN, WE THINK CHRISTMAS.
ONE SUGGESTION IS TO HAVE ONE COLOR DOMINATE.
IN THE CASE OF OUR CHEVRON BORDER HERE, IT SEEMS THAT WE HAVE AN EQUAL AMOUNT OF RED AND GREEN.
WHAT IF WE GO AHEAD AND INTRODUCE A MAROON, AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN, OUR RED BECOMES A DOMINANT COLOR, DOESN'T IT?
ADDS A LITTLE MORE INTEREST TO THAT BORDER.
OR, FOR INSTANCE, ON THIS PARTICULAR BORDER, WHERE WE HAVE OUR OPPOSITES, OUR ORANGE AND OUR BLUE, WE HAVE TO CONSIDER WHAT SHADE OF BLUE WE WANT.
THAT'S A PARTICULAR TEAL.
MAYBE WE'D WANT A BLUE THAT HAS A LITTLE MORE PINK IN IT OR A LITTLE MORE RED.
OR MAYBE EVEN GO DARKER.
THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN TELL IS BY PLAYING WITH IT TO MAKE THAT FINAL DECISION.
OUR NEXT COLOR SCHEME WOULD BE OUR SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY.
FOR INSTANCE, BLUE AND RED- ORANGE OR YELLOW-ORANGE.
COME ACROSS THE COLOR WHEEL AND THEN SPLIT ON EITHER SIDE.
I HAVE SELECTED HERE THE BLUE AND THE RED-ORANGE AND THE LIGHTER YELLOW-ORANGE, BUT SOMEHOW THIS SEEMS A LITTLE OVERPOWERING, DOESN'T IT?
MAYBE IF I'D CALM THAT DOWN WITH A LITTLE DEEPER SHADE, IT MIGHT BALANCE A LITTLE MORE WITH THIS BLUE THAT WE'VE GOT.
OR SOMETIMES EVEN WHEN WE LOOK AT THINGS UP CLOSE, THERE IS YELLOW AND BLUE HERE WITH THE RED-ORANGE, BUT AT A DISTANCE, IT ALMOST COMES INTO A BROWN COLOR, DOESN'T IT?
WHAT REALLY HELPS THIS WORK TOGETHER IS THAT THE SCALE-- I'VE GONE LARGER, TINY, AND THEN INTRODUCED THAT GEOMETRIC.
OUR DOUBLE SPLIT COMPLEMENTARY, THE RED-VIOLET, ALONG WITH THE BLUE-VIOLET, COMES OVER OPPOSITE TO THE BLUE-GREEN AND THE YELLOW-GREEN.
IF WE CONSIDER THAT FOR ANOTHER COMBINATION, WE COME UP WITH A VERY INTERESTING COMBINATION.
WHICH ONE IS GONNA DOMINATE?
YOU HAVE TO DECIDE.
THIS, PERHAPS, COULD BE A LITTLE DARKER OR A LITTLE LIGHTER SHADE AND MAYBE WOULD BALANCE OUR COLOR OVER HERE.
OUR NEXT COLOR SCHEME IS ANALOGOUS, AND THAT HAS TO DO WITH 3 TO 5 COLORS THAT ARE NEXT TO EACH OTHER ON THE COLOR WHEEL.
ON THIS PARTICULAR SETUP, I'VE GONE BEYOND MY 5 AND COME OVER TO RED SO THAT IT ALMOST DISTURBS, DOESN'T IT?
IT'S ALMOST TOO POWERFUL.
WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS GO BACK TO THE ANALOGOUS COLOR SCHEME AND MAYBE INTRODUCE ANOTHER SHADE OF GREEN ON TOP OF THAT RED, AND IT PULLS IT TOGETHER A LITTLE BIT BETTER.
QUITE OFTEN ON THE ANALOGOUS, IT WILL BE JUST SHADES OF RED GOING INTO THE BLUE AND PURPLE AND THE TURQUOISE, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN WE HAVE COLORS THAT ARE NEXT TO EACH OTHER ON THE COLOR WHEEL.
POLYCHROMATIC HAS TO DO WITH FABRICS THAT INCLUDE THE WHOLE COLOR WHEEL, THE FULL RANGE, AND A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THAT WOULD BE MY SEMINOLE JACKET-- JUST A WHOLE ARRAY OF COLOR, AND THEN ONCE AGAIN IT'S THE BALANCE AND HOW YOU PLACE THOSE COLORS NEXT TO EACH OTHER THAT REALLY DOES THE JOB FOR YOU.
SOMETIMES WE'RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO FIND A FABRIC THAT HAS ALL THOSE POLYCHROMATIC FABRICS INSIDE, AND THAT'S WHAT THIS WONDERFUL PRINT DOES.
I SOMEHOW THINK, THOUGH, IF WE WOULD INCLUDE A MUSLIN NEXT TO EACH ONE OF THESE, THEN OUR PRINT'S GONNA SHOW UP A LITTLE BIT MORE, OR WE COULD GO ONE STEP FURTHER, INCLUDE LOTS OF CALICOS ALL THROUGH THIS AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE CREATE OUR SCRAP QUILT BY BLENDING ALL THE WONDERFUL SHADES THAT ARE IN THAT ONE WONDERFUL PRINT.
THE LAST COLOR COMBINATION IS THE TRIADIC, AND THAT WOULD HAVE TO DO WITH YELLOW, RED, AND BLUE TOGETHER WITH 3 COLORS IN BETWEEN.
NOW, I'VE CHOSEN TO PRESENT THOSE IN MY TRANSPORTATION VEST HERE WITH THE CARS AND THE BICYCLES, AND WHAT BALANCES EACH ONE OF THESE IS THAT SPLASH OF WHITE AND THE BLACK AND THE GRAY AND OF COURSE THE ROAD COMING RIGHT DOWN.
