Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipGood evening, everybody, I'm Doug Brown with Chuck Patton and C.P.
We're happy to be bringing this 10th anniversary season to the people.
We've enjoyed it.
A great deal.
Yes, we certainly have.
And later in the show, we're going to give you an opportunity to to write to us We'll show you an address and we'd like to have your comments and criticism sent in.
And it's only appropriate that we finish the season with the two top teams and they definitely are.
They've been the top dominant teams in this sport since the late sixties.
Oh yes, for 15 of the last 17, national championships have been won by these two teams.
And of course, everybody knows I was on a roll.
They won ten out of eleven themselves, probably pulled away from the pack as much as any team ever.
They now have established a clear dominance between everybody and themselves.
So when you say that there are actually three categories now there's Iowa, and then there's Iowa State which is pulled away from everybody else too.
Well, that's true.
And I think a lot of the credit there goes to Jim Gibbons, the new head coach at Iowa State.
What he's done is he's taken a snap of young coaches.
He's put Ed Manning coming over from Iowa, Kevin Darcus just out of the ranks as a competitor, less Anderson after 18 years an assistant, he's taken those men put them together into a staff and that staff has given the young wrestlers from Iowa State renewed enthusiasm.
A new kind of spirit.
And it's begun to show, and I think nobody appreciates that more than the big rival over in Iowa City.
Dan Gable, who's here today?
Well, that's true, and Dan really likes to have competition.
He's got it now.
Of course, you know, if there is going to be a national poker game and wrestling, Dan Gable would want to be at the table because he's used to picking up all the chips this time of year.
Oh, this is this is the big season for Dan.
Now, the last time he won big, he had a 25 to nine wind down at Iowa City.
Well, that's true.
That was a big win.
But there are a lot of close matches in there.
You know, some of those things could turn around this time.
I'm anticipating a lot of close matches again.
You know, we've got some lineup changes now.
We have a new 26 pounder for Iowa and possibly a new heavyweight.
Yes, those a Penrith and are in there could make a difference.
Who knows?
We had some terrific matchups last time in the middle.
There were two classics between number one and number two ranked wrestlers.
They're still that way.
The last time they ended in a draw at £142 for Iowa Kevin Dresser.
Well, Kevin's coming off a disappointing loss to score from Oklahoma State eleven to ten after a 71 lead.
Real outstanding technique here across NI Pick takes his opponent down to the mat and scores near-fall points.
He's up against Joe Gibbons, who is still ranked number one and the defending national champion.
Here's a young man who has really been in a class by himself Joe's got great technique here.
You see him in on a double.
Good penetration, then good lift hips under.
Takes his opponent off the mat and then down to the mat for the takedown And we have the top two men at 150 again.
Also, there is no one.
Jim Heffernan.
Well, Heffernan has great technique as well.
one of the things you'll see him do is instead of being like with the left here, he's in on the double, but he changes the angle, cuts the opposite brace and scores the takedown.
And his opponent is about the most talented freshman we know of.
Tim Krieger, really a talent.
Here's a young guy who's great on top here.
He's controlling the opposite arm and then rolls his opponent through to score three near-fall points.
His best position?
The top position?
Well, we're going to go through just three matches before we get to those, and they could be great too.
We're looking for outstanding matches up and down the line and what is always an interesting interstate rivalry and one in which very strange things happen from time to time.
It's Iowa and Iowa State, and earlier I had a chance to talk with both coaches about tonight's big duel.
Why?
Last time at Iowa's place, you had some close matches, but you lost by a fairly big score.
What do you think will be the difference for you this time?
Well, we're hoping that we can go out there and rustle somewhat of the pace that we've established since the Iowa mee with Russell, Wisconsin, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma , and you and I.
We've really put it to my thought as far as the pace of the match, and we want to go out there and do that again this time.
And I think we'll see as close to me and the crowd should help.
I feel the crowd will help.
It's going a lot better having 15,000 people cheering for you than against you.
Last time at your place, you established dominance over Iowa State fairly early.
How do you get dominance at the other guy's place?
Well, I guess it'd be nice to start out a similar fashion because momentum in wrestling sometimes carries a big weight.
And right here in Hilton Coliseum, it'd be nicer to have the momentum going our way at the beginning because once it gets switched around the other way, it's going to be more difficult than whatever it was at Iowa.
So right now, we're going to have to just Russell on the strength of our team in the beginning and hopefully that my kids are good enoug to be able to start that dominance off at the beginning.
But this is the kind of meat that that really, even if you do loser or upset somewhere, somebody else could upset the other guy.
So who I'm looking at, it is hope to have a good total meat, but let's wait and see, and we will.
It's Iowa versus Iowa State coming up next on Iowa Public Television.
Never mind the cold, never mind that the Sun disappears for three months and that winter lasts for nine.
And never mind that it's quite a migratory trick for birds and animals alike.
This is where they come to the Arctic, to the land of beyond at the top of the world, because in that brief summer that transforms the frozen tundra, their young will take their first steps and their first amazing leaps join nature up north in the kingdom of the ice of their.
Join us for the wonders of nature tonight at eight.
We're back at Hilton Coliseum and aims for the big rematch between the number on ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and the number two ranked Iowa State Cyclones.
You see how they got that way.
Iowa State's only loss was to Iowa Adobe you saw earlier.
Iowa, now under Dan Gable, has moved into the lead in the series.
25 to nine was that score in Iowa City last time.
You see Hilton Coliseum and the red and gold colors cardinal and gold of Iowa State, Iowa, lining up at the mat has won 36 straight dual meet.
The last time they lost to Iowa State was here in 1981, and that was a big one.
You'll see something of that later on.
one of the big moments in that what a fine season Jim Gibbons has had.
It's really outstanding.
And the matchups tonight are not quite the same as they were last time.
We'll show you what we have here.
118 through 151st excellent against Summit Penrith is in that 126 member Kelly lost last time to Glen.
Then comes some big ones Randall against Jeff Gibbons and at one, 42 and 50, those number one and two men we were showing you a while ago at 158 to heavyweight.
There are any chances from last time out to take Kessler Savannah's Dale Chip earl and Gasol, and then we might have a change at heavy at the 190 or heavyweights.
You see, there are some options open for people and that depends on what's happening in the team score when you get that late Iowa State against Iowa in Hilton Coliseum.
I will try to get a crowd estimate for you a little bit later on, it's not a full house, but there are a lot of people here and they're making a lot of noise.
It certainly is a nice to see the crowd improving like this.
So that's what Iowa has done this year against great teams.
They've beaten all of them.
And you don't see any close friends there either, do you know?
So some of those, they were still in the process of developing a lineup and that's the Iowa team and Iowa State.
You don't see very many close friends in there, either.
The only loss was to Iowa, but this is the second chance for the Cyclones.
We've seen some interesting things happen, as we said, and past meets here.
When one team was favored, Phil Henning of Marshalltown is the is the official as he was in the first eight, he's out with the captains.
All the Iowa State seniors are captain to tells Larry Jackson at his restaurant to close.
This will decide who gets the choice in the second period of the first match and then the teams will reverse for the second choice in the evening.
All right, Iowa State has the choice of the match.
Those are all graduating seniors, those three co-captains and there goes Larry Jackson.
You see him sometimes this year at £158 and Gibbons and Propolis with the other two at £180.
Here we go.
Everybody knows how important these first matches are.
You've seen all these swings and what happened a lot of £18.
That's right.
And a lot of times when you get a big crowd at home, that's what makes the difference.
We have a microphone, as you know, half past watching on Phil Hennig.
It's Matt Egeland of Iowa, ranked number eight, down to 118 for good now against Perry Summit.
We know that Eklund had a little trouble making way to the edge.
Yes, he was having some trouble all the way until noon, I believe.
And he's sort of a fast starter.
We'll watch this and see if he's going to try to conserve himself.
Some trust the first time around, they Matt Hagelin, beat up ten to eight, beat some a eight, although he was well ahead going into the third period and then ran out of gas.
As I recall, he was.
That was his first time down at £118.
Well, this is almost going to be like the first time when he was four or £5 overweight to start with.
He's going to have a little bit of trouble being able to replenish that fluid supply and get himself back in here and get going.
We'll see.
He tends to be a fast starter.
He likes to get out and get his points early, as he did the last time.
He's not starting that fast this time.
Maybe he's going to try to conserve.
And of course, that never works.
When you're out there, it's the same as if you're going hard or you're going easy Somebody you can see trying a leg sweep.
He's a he's a thrower from up high.
England is more of a low shots man like that is in my youth right there.
Just missed the leg.
He went shaking.
So far, he missed the leg.
No summit hasn't that high cross.
Just like that, he gets in, he goes the other side.
Some outside cracks will come with his left arm coming through to the to the leg and he'll come from this side.
And England's goes the opposite way.
I think one is, you know, he's had an up and down year, most of it 126.
But last year he was a runner up in the Nationals at this weight and he gets down and stays down.
He's a tenacious competitor to back up the edge.
Guys got the shot first period, £118.
The Cyclones and the Hawkeyes very summits come on very well for Iowa State this year.
He's put himself in the picture now as the man likes this weight, likes it at Iowa State after transferring from northern Iowa.
He's got, he's Amanda.
They're really threatening a lot of people and even though he's not in the rankings, he's in the right program with the right coaches.
Having a guy like Dickerson, the rest of them every day certainly hasn't hurt anybody.
We have about half the time gone in the first period, a beautiful low tackle by eagle and four points to nothing.
The first takedown I came up with two on one and when he called on the two on one and then stepped into .
Got to deal with two areas of prosperity.
Take.
Welcome back to the lead, Doug.
Here's the high prices, yes, indeed, now.
Just as important post-race to sit and hold him, dump him over.
But all this is a real good job right here.
Some are coming back and trying to free his arm to pull across and get the two point.
Out, there were no back points in there.
It's three to two in favor of the summit.
You saw Dan Gable shaking his finger at an excellent time to look at the time, and here's some it's good to go to the legs on top.
He can get this in and put a lot of pressure on him.
He can wear England out right here because even though it doesn't look like you're doing lots of stuff not to get to go over as well as not get hurt down here.
three official is telling somebody better improve this.
His job is to tell him to improve and call it a stalemate, and then he's going to tell somebody, it's your responsibility, whether it's the top man at the dam, man is a judgment decision on the official.
Well, two points each man for a take down summit had the escape.
For one, it's three to two in favor of the cyclone here in the first way.
Try for a tilt, not quite himself, all the way through without stopping the flood that was close This is what this is, what you got to expect out of the summit, he really believes that he can go with this right.
He thinks that the weight reduction that they're going through is going to tear him out and it's giving him a new kind of enthusiasm and zip at the whistle.
No big move.
We have about 25 seconds to go in this game.
Now we're even 33.
That's a good move on Edwards Karate Kid.
He stopped the summit's ability to reach across and catch him to get the legs and then came up and scored.
That summit didn't want to let him off.
That was earned by agreeing Good job.
We have 15 seconds to go in the first period.
This is where you can score and maybe not be scored back off.
Almost got him in the foot sweep that time.
He's been trying out a couple of times.
This time he almost got it.
Well, there'll be no scores.
33.
At the end of the first period of Hilton Coliseum was Iowa State, Iowa, coming against in its tempo and crowd.
That's what that's what they're looking for in Iowa states.
Now, the last time these two met Eagleton was well ahead at the end of the first period certainly was ahead at the end of the second period 44 seconds, right time.
You got right for them on there.
You heard Dan tell Eglin how much riding time Summitt has, so he'll probably try to ride for a while and erase a little bit of it and maybe get some bad points if he can.
Well, it tends to be a little more conservative than that, Doug.
He may try to keep the referee off his back by doing some, some things, but he isn't really going to try to lose anything by turning him.
He just tends not to be that aggressive and that he's going to try to get him off here.
If he can't pull his man off rather than get caught, they're sitting on his rear 33 score.
That's Perry, somebody who comes from Bloomington, Indiana.
He transferred over from University of northern Iowa, and this is his first season in the regular lineup for the Cyclones, Jim Gibbons says this is the Iowa State tournament lineup.
He's a he knows what he has to do here now.
What do you want to do is keep that arm free.
Make England move up off the legs and then get.
Border three now after that summit leads by 1:00, you got just kind of depends on what happens on their feet, how they reach their split takedown so far.
Yeah, a lot of it's going to depend on attitude right here.
Maybe the crowd at home can over.
Over here are the coach gave or say, Hey Glen, you got to be tough right now.
Beautiful.
Try to.
Kerry, but he couldn't make it work either time, referee Phil Hatton says they're out of bounds.
You can see there is a stressor.
He's complaining about the fact that his arm was hurt.
We went in so deep on that thing that he missed and missed the leg and then got He's probably got his lat stretched real bad right there.
I'm not too sure.
Here comes the trainer out for excellent and Jim Gibbons gets to Coach Summitt and watch how deep he goes in.
He's got the arm because if he steps in, he misses it right here.
His arm is reaching up there, trying to grab a hold of something and right.
And there is maybe one where he stretched it, something pulling down on one, reaching out with the other.
Sometimes you get a pull.
She may just be a little bit tired and trying to get a rest.
You know?
Eglin has been ranked the last amateur wrestling news survey as well, actually probably the survey of 1:41 or two everybody in the office.
It's ranked 8:45 going on now, some it comes out.
There's Eddie Bannock talking to the next man up for Iowa State.
No, Kelly.
He was the victim Kelly of Upset Donald Iowa City.
He's going up against Brad Powers for the first time.
This important starting matches.
Time remaining about a minute in the second period summit, which has a strong front headlock.
He does have a front headlock position, but a beautiful.
At every summit of Iowa State.
Here's what happened.
Mike stepped in and tried to go the other way, summit fell and going step the cross once he stepped across it, lock the legs.
It's just inevitable.
A matter of time.
Got the ball and it was nothing you could do about it.
Once they had those legs in one arm out high and the other outlets, it takes both of them above his head.
So his Iowa State six at the beginning and Iowa nothing.
Those are the kind of surprises that make it interesting.
We were accustomed to him in this big duel between Iowa State.
Aren't we look at the fact that the fall in four minutes and 24 seconds for Perry Summit over Madikwe.
Now we go to 126 rapid of Iowa against Bill Kelly, two tough guys.
Kelly has the single leg he.
And this is going to be a tough match.
Kelly feels he has no make up here.
He saw Premiere didn't on the double.
Kelly comedy now great action.
Well, this is the way Iowa State has wrestled all year, actuall very intense, this kind of intensity we're used to seeing all year long and still see you from Iowa.
Well, how's the leg?
He picked the ankle to start that, and now he still has the ankle pixel pin with can't finish it because he keeps the hips low.
Drops the hips then, which won't be able to finish that.
I'll see Penrith got into the crotch.
Now he can start to use that leverage against Kelly wanted to keep those hips down low.
Now, the question is, is pan rats in a good enough position to avoid bad points here, he's trying to reverse Kelly guilty.
Well, Kelly really hasn't put in there, a chemist calling himself on around here.
Depends on whether he can get that arm off the leg or not.
You see his hand coming through to take it off.
If he gets that, he's going to end up with a reversal in it.
Kelly keeps the hips down low.
He's got a chance.
Actually, that little flap helped Kelly more than it did Penrith.
You bet.
So now all he can do is hope for a stalemate.
And we've used up a lot of time, more than a minute of writing time for Kelly, and he likes to leg canvas.
Got a lot of lake.
No.
Well, I didn't get his hip checked on that grant attempt at Grammy, and this is Kelly spot right here where he feels good.
She helped him with counters out.
See what he does?
It's a dangerous, potentially dangerous.
Still having the.
At Iowa State, because here we are at the Coliseum as Dan Gable, he just saw his 118 pounder Matt Eklund get pinned to start to meet Perry Summit court Egeland and try for a Kerry got him flat on his back.
And here we are.
At 1:26, Kelly leads to do nothing over Brad Penrith.
Penrith is undefeated, come out Iowa State and got a move up.
We saw the same thing here just a second ago and put himself back in I don't think he's got coaching tables is going to be there very much.
Now he's into the fray where he's got the head levered with the back of the elbow and he's under the arm 23.
That count is here to tell Kelly that he's going to have to take.
We're going to have a stalemate, stalemate, the position.
Well, you'll let him get there again, but it won't last night.
That's Matt Hagelin.
He had trouble making weight today, and I don't know, is that made the difference in the match?
But it might have had it gone on, but he put himself in that spot to get trapped in Adobe.
Here's Kelly trying to get a chill on Canberra.
Never managed to find out Kelly's.
He's keeping him.
Where he wants him is keeping him down on the mat.
Just grab Penrith.
He's out.
Good, tall, angular type sophomore to New York, 34.
He's a two time state champion, so he's accustomed to type matches and that's where he's actually feeling this big when there's this much pressure, he's never been there where he had the win because they're down by six.
But sometimes can tell and oh, legs, well, that's true.
three, I tried to do something at work, something else go to change his position a little bit, takes the leg out and that gets the referee.
Yes, it does.
And.
Able to make it work, get Kelly knows it's coming.
And it isn't getting his hips down and out on that switch.
Well, Kelly got a tape down with 13 seconds guard of the match, and he's ridden Penrith all the way since only six seconds remain in the first period.
Top man, you're on done a great job so far in this match.
Iowa State six Iowa Nothing after an upset fall by Perry Summit at £180 Oregon's first period in.
Kelly to Penrith.
I was Steve's choice, and his choice to make a choice should go, I think, to I was choice to Penrith.
Up down on your feet, your first Panera's is not quite sure what he wants to do.
first to you.
I've done on your feet, so he defers.
Kelly looks to his coach.
What'll I do?
What do you choose?
You know how a state takes down?
All right.
Well, this is a spot where Pittman feels comfortable.
He's a he's a good top man.
He likes to leg as well.
And a part of the reason he's been so successful this year is he's good on top.
We'll see what he likes to do.
He likes to come in this cross, reach a seam, come across, then puts the legs on, reaches across and blocks the arm, then gets the leg in.
Though he's pretty, pretty successful, he's got a lot of length locks up a cradle now on Kelly on the far side.
They pulled out either because Kelly's going to control the legs It drew one, 23, Brad Penrith, a sophomore at Iowa stalemate.
He took over this position from Clarkson, and Glen was having a great year.
You know, he was in there after England went down, he'd gone undefeated or lost this match in a tryout to tell you something about the competition in that wrestling room.
It certainly does And neither one of them was a man of starters.
one was up there at the beginning of the season, knocking the head of.
And what he has is has got his hips up on top generals, got his hips on the bottom.
No good.
Legere wants to be under hips down like they always want that belly button up on top and toward the mast.
I see him trying to pull himself up out of way.
Kelly knows it.
And a reversal for Kelly leads for nothing.
Get put the leg back in himself, just get a hand.
Right, he kept back through that position until he finally made it work is now for seven.
Kelly has a lot of writing time.
Well, this is where they know piracy just he started.
Do that sweating just a little bit too soon.
Kelly still has the leg.
He's got he's not having that thing there, he forced himself, it's a reversal.
So that trend of reversals here and Kelly still leads by two for one or two.
This is Iowa and Iowa State.
It's six to eight, I think Iowa State after one match, a pin for some either 118 over Hagelin two.
This is Kelly in Penrith.
At 126, we have Jeff Gibbons and Greg Randall next.
OK, well, Iowa Public Television from Hilton Coliseum.
I'm Doug Brown with Chuck Papp for many years as coach at the University of Northern Iowa by myself writing time two minutes and three seconds for Kelly, Penrith is on top, with about 20 seconds left to go in the second period.
He put himself in the spot last night and.
Across the night, he jumped himself right back in.
Kelly trying to pull him down just didn't make it this time.
You know, you can't take a lecture, try to do that too often because he feels where you're going.
There's just not enough time, Kelly, to get out here and teach her second period and fortitude.
Riding time has slipped to about a minute.
42.
Penrith Panthers choice this time choice, and he's going down down to see starts that sweats Kelly's stranglehold on the league, but he blocked him from coming across with his knee.
Then he scoots his hips on after it.
That's what he hasn't been doing on those earlier switches.
He hasn't cleared his hips, got to be able to have hip freedom in order to be able to make that that hip freedom will get you out to the side.
There's Jim Gibbons looking at the beginning of the last period.
Kelly starts on top, Penrith gets to his feet this time.
He knows that he's got a switch, and he's trying to block the switch by shooting him on this side.
And it's Kelly's responsibility.
Put him back down.
And they go out of bounds for the referee counting.
Now they want Penrith to get back to his feet so he can clear his hips, make that switch effective.
That time, Kelly just shifted over to the same side.
Penrith wants to switch on so he might have to change off and go the other way.
Kelly, as the league and on camera that right at time point makes a lot of difference.
I'll tell you what.
And Kelly is protecting that point, he's now more than two minutes ahead, I guess it's going to be a factor of one, no matter what it does.
three.
This eats up a lot of time you hear the referee counting stalemate on legs.
two of a kind after they like to get in those legs and we're on a cold, eats up a lot of time and there's not much is happening of know you pretty quick for cutting the legs unless you can use them, right?
That's it, Tom.
But the referee is thinking, I'm going to call you for stalling if you keep doing it.
So neither man knows I've been coming here.
Neither man can go any place because the other guy's getting blocked out.
Hilton Coliseum.
We have about a minute and a half to go at £126.
Now we're going to get a warrant, stalling Tom in the stall.
He's not returning to the mat.
He's holding on while you're down.
first warning of the need so far.
Iowa State won the first match six to nothing.
I was actually a lead six to nothing on a fall by summit.
Mark Johnson, assistant coach next to Dan Gable on the Alabama.
Kelly gets the leg in the gap.
Well, he's done a good job of stopping Penrith and then blocking the path hasn't reacted to the lake.
Well, it's like he doesn't know exactly where he wants to go, and it's given Kelly an opportunity to be effective here.
Stalemate.
Stalemate.
Back to the center again with about a minute to go.
It's very important for Iowa State to do well in these opening, they couldn't do better than they did at 118.
Oh, they got they got them right where they want them right now to lead a winning from Kelly to put give themselves a chance because there are some weights up higher.
I doubt he.
Wow.
Now, the referees, Jim Kelly, is trying very hard to bring us back to the back.
As you know, he's got a rookie position right here for us to keep the hips down.
And is trying to sweat through at least get out of bounds, I think, now with only a half minute left Well, even if it, he just let him stay in here, even if he gets the reversal, it just eats up a lot of time.
Now, let's set it up for you again, it's four to two, it's a two point lead, but Kelly will have the extra point at just say, five to two because he has the riding time points, so Penrith has to get three points somewhere for a drop.
To be effective with his move.
But falling can make a difference.
Potentially dangerous on the need.
But there are only five.
Well, five seconds is five seconds, so some things can happen, things happen, you know, they say he's a cool competitor, though he understands what he's got to do.
You.
It's a three point plan for Kelly, five, the former.
And Iowa State is already well ahead of.
Iowa City.
It's the second time the Hawkeyes.
Nothing after two matches.
Hawks aren't accustomed to this, and it makes it interesting for everybody here, everybody knows this man is top of the way and they're tough right here.
Number three ranked Jack Randall goes against Jeff Gibbons at 130 for the last time out.
Randall 12823.
Randall But Gibbons in that match showed a lot talking to a lot of people.
I think he did a great job against the real seasoned veteran.
While the Hawkeyes need somebody to do something big here, of course, and Randall would like very much to do it.
He's a show.
He's a tough, strong wrestler.
Lost only five times this year.
two time all-American at £134.
Up ahead over the next two matches, our number one and two ranked men at both weights.
Randall.
The man who saw Greg Randall do something that is extreme, he's extremely good at and Gibbons needs to watch, and that's news his hips.
He's very dangerous.
Being able to change the angle on a man's giving him too much pressure and use those hips that just flip you over.
Hawkeyes are going to have to show what they're made up here, and they're coming down nine points.
At Iowa State.
Jeff Evans, as I said when we started this match show to the people a lot last time with his goal is is determination.
He's doing that again, this time keeping Randall off his offense.
But by starting on it and no offense of his own edge we've used about him had no score.
Stay in here.
Jeff Gibbons is a redshirt freshman.
two time state champion Greg Randall, as you know, was a four time high school champion.
He's going to have to get some offense going now.
You know, you get caught up in the match.
You're in the rambles in here with Jeff.
Give us he does that little pitch.
Front page hits.
Did he call score or not?
We didn't get a chance to see the coast of Somalia right there.
His feet was off with the shoulders are still in.
OK, just a second, let me think.
Let me think, let me think it through.
Let me say go through and his feet were off the board and should There's just know.
Phil is trying to no take notes.
OK, here we go inside too much, it wasn't total control there.
Now what you see both of you outside of your poolside when they both go out and still is supporting you control, you'd have gotten two and two, but you didn't have the control.
So you're both up.
And Gable knew that because he wasn't off the bench.
Of course, Gibbons do that, too, so that's why it was outrageous to remind him you were right the first time.
And that's the way it came out.
And that is when the supporting parts of the wrestlers go out, you're out pushing the shoulders of the supporting part.
Well, one they.
Then you can still kicking them, but they were both off, both knees out.
Randall has been very strong in this match so far, he has.
But he is trying to exert his physical who is on the line dominance over.
Fate.
As I said earlier, this is dangerous with the hips.
It's hard unless you're a wrestler, unless you've been involved in a lot of times, you can't understand how somebody can be facing you All of a sudden, the hips can vary, but you get in there and they change direction on you so fast.
And he got in quickly, that time for up to a quick two, and Randall gives the Hawkeyes the lead in this match.
first time to do nothing.
Take going to go.
Well, it has almost a minute.
So here Gibbons comes and gets his head down out of shape.
Randle tries to counter them.
He just gets his own arm under and one arm over him slides in behind him for the takedown.
But my impression has been in the last minute or so.
Gibbons has been thinking defensive and look at this as a mind has his mind where he wants it, thinking defensively.
Economic landscape one.
Give us shots have come from a little far away.
You don't want to do that with a guy like some react so fast in which what you said is already true, I would started wrestling, defending, running against Kim.
They're trying to make a single leg out of this when you get there, here's another that those hips are the danger.
We know a lot of restaurants in these two lineups.
This is a small group for trying to get in behind, wants to get all the way down around behind that knee in order to be able to take one more off.
Let's go back to the center again out of bounds.
Phil Henning, Iowa State.
You were one for store and best practice on the edge.
That's important because next time it's a point.
And as we saw last time in Iowa City, those little single cars can make an effort.
There's a good offensive shot, right, chef, given the end of the first period, it's two to one Randall.
The attendance shows there is not a full House prospect, Shelton Santos.
He defers to you a noisy crowd.
Well, they've had reason to be down.
Yes, they have.
And it's nice to see 9000 people come back in and follow the cyclones again.
Perry Smith pinned Matt Egeland at £118 in four minutes and 24 seconds, and then Bill Kelly beat Brad Penrith five to two.
So the Cyclones lead nine to nothing as we come up to 134 system behind him because he had his hand like that.
Side by side, OK, you just like that?
Okay.
As long as it's touching a little refresher where we want to start with his hand palm down college and he just wanted me to do was just keep it the hand in there with the thumb closed in, this game pulls up at Randall's point.
first off, we don't want.
three to one, Randall, at £134, second period riding time is negligible.
Here's again, here's where he's dangerous.
Let's give them their vehicle and let him back in here.
We're going to hear the referee here trying to tell us Iowan let Iowa State back in.
Now he is.
Edge the other way says that given to smile states made some good offensive moves, but he hasn't finished them and he's going to have to go ahead and go all the way through them, or he'll get caught in there.
That's why Randall so dangerous.
He's got that great balance.
Good hips as gets in.
He hasn't finished.
And now if he tries to get out, here's where Randall can hurt you and catches you trying to get up too soon.
Then just whips wrestled a lot on the edge of the mat.
Randall has been a man coming forward all the time.
Gibbons has found himself with his back to the edge of the mat rut of his benefit a couple of times as it had escaped being taken down because of the out-of-bounds lock grant.
That's the first time Randall has made the move that he likes to do so well in this catch catch one, then do the outside shot right there.
He tried it again.
Boy is into him, pushing him with the undervote rate on what was the score Randall kept the hawk leads the Cyclones, lead on the team, score nine to nothing and Hilton Coliseum, Iowa and Iowa State.
No, no.
Now he's in again now single leg is not going to go off.
Close to the edge.
Good with her, though, by Gibbons, who's not going to score this time.
Well, he's not seen before.
Use his head to drive you over, but if they do get a takedown now, they're going to go up both up.
We don't want Randall.
All right.
As I remember, I said it was eight to three the first time I met as a close match for a while, and Randall put it away in the last period.
Sarandos done a lot of the offense in this match just every now and then.
Jeff Give us will do one of those, but he's had his back to the edge when I would.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him get called unless he keeps on with those little pops Yeah, yeah.
So those little ones keep the referee off your back.
You're not effective at scoring 18 seconds to go.
Gibbons will have to score.
Oh, well, he's down by two.
Randall just keeps coming forward.
Like.
He's probably in his mind, he's got no knowledge of the game.
That's the one he finished right there.
Greg, what happened to him doing the finishing?
I didn't give that.
Take that right away.
See, there he is as he came in behind, I still miss the leg.
And then Randall didn't know that he had given up, but he turned away.
And now let's not forget to take that.
Let's listen to the referee to that points until after he got it.
All right.
Let's see what you're saying.
I'm afraid there was only four seconds.
OK, so it's two seconds edition.
You had a tie.
Okay, that's correct.
Okay.
He fell down.
He felt he gave the points to some choice.
Was NCAA titles over the last 15, 16, 17 years, 15 out of 17.
Let's go down there.
Well, Iowa State started to get closer to that upper upper nuts, aren't they?
Yeah, this made is indicative of that.
33 is a score gibbons.
Starts the second third period now.
Randall on top.
What about?
The right time is only 13 seconds.
So it doesn't mean anything yet, unless can get a good long ride.
The strategy now.
Crowds get the.
Coaches are getting involved.
A lot of enthusiasm here.
What he's trying to do is get to his feet.
A lot of fucked up.
Well, Jeff Gibbons record is 16 and eleven.
But he comes from a family that has won two national championships and they have a lot of hard.
30 seconds to go.
It's on the line now.
That's for sure.
Iowa leads nine to nothing after two big wins in on the legs go scramble goes up around that.
They've got that seat belt came to the half board to take that.
Got the takedown when he had to get it.
It's able to get in close enough to be physically dominant again and prevent Gibbons from doing some of the slick moves.
But he's able to do, and he's asking his coaches, Do I let him up or not?
He needs 30 seconds or thereabouts to score a point right before he touches and releases them So they ask, you don't stay with him for a while giving you a great job.
Fight for Randall's got to get out of that leg to secure it out of our.
The clock is important here.
44 seconds of writing time for Randall.
Randall leads by one.
He needs to get his team on the board.
Just two seconds right at the end of that one period.
It becomes significant.
There's that.
And arms control.
Now he's got it locked up tight.
Probably try to keep him here for a little while.
He has a minute of riding time now.
Out of bounds with 40 seconds to go.
Well, neither man has let up a bit, but a great match all the way through this.
This is in Iowa Iowa State Park.
The crowd again and again, they're into it that they are.
Holmes got the first two from the Hawks, a pin by summit over London, a victory by Kelly decision over Penrith, and they want to see if I can get their young freshman.
I live here again, the number three man in the country, Greg Randall.
There's the whistle.
Way they go, rebel, just ask the referee, what is the score, what's the right time?
Come back to the center.
What happened here?
Well, they were they were asking, why did he lock hands with the referee said they were on their feet.
That's when it's OK to lock him.
Yeah.
And then when the gibbons come back down to his knees, they are fired some more as a scar.
And on top and leading great, great standing switch by gibbons and great reaction by Randall.
So far, that's done.
You see the clock up there in the south.
A lot of hard.
Oh, yeah.
Well, give us now needs the reversal in order to be able to get a tap to get one point.
This is going to help in containing.
Well, people like you hear.
But but Randall is making Gibbons wrestle that way, linear set a circular, if that makes sense.
He's taking it to the outside because that's what gives us momentum is going then when they make the movie go off.
Same thing was happening on those takedowns earlier, only it was the other way around.
Then Gibbons congressional level is keeping him in.
Randall, in a strong position here, but only five seconds to go, right, right off the bat, boys got to get out, guys.
He's got him over there, but they have guns drawn through his back So with their lawyer, Randall makes a seventh floor fighting time next on the floor.
Gibbons and by one point, a heck of an effort by Jeff Gibbons.
I mean, all that came right at the end.
He just did an outstanding job, really pushed great Randall all the way to the limit.
But the Hawks are on the board for the first time, if you can believe it If you just tuned in to fact, Iowa State won the first two matches on a pan-India decision.
Randall gets it up to nine, the three now with an eight to four victory over Gibbons, and now we go to the first of these top dog matches.
I see a big smile on your face.
Oh, great.
It's just great to participate in this, whether you're working on television or not, and we'll get it right away.
Just give us, I guess, Kevin Dressler.
At £142, Gibbons ranked number one for Iowa State wrestler number two.
They were a draw the last time and get that high cross right off the whistle and it still doesn't happen because the Wizards affected.
Now this is how wrestlers lose knees, so the refs referee is looking at this closely.
Being a competitor aggressor is going to fight.
This is all they can.
And as the ticked off, we got one Bob Dylan's each of these men have lost one this year is collegiate wrestler and wrestler lost the last time out to look Skull saw that perhaps an Iowa public television on last Saturday night at Oklahoma State very strangely ran out of gas in the last period.
Now he's got he's got a couple options here, Doug.
He's he can't turn the corner and get behind it because the West is a little too deep this time.
So he's going to have to try to get to his feet with the leg.
We're gonna have to try to get across very soon.
Get across that now has been a scooped up front.
What's his name?
So this kind of negates the wizard, and he's going to try to get himself this week and free the pressure on that arm.
It's really one patient.
Yeah, he is patient.
He'll want to get to his feet with it.
So you try to get up now.
And the presses are getting up, he's got to be careful, aggressive and take him down with him.
Oh now he should try to hold his arm if he doesn't want to get his arm out right now?
I thought.
Gibbons has wanted to start fast.
Has done that.
There you see Greg Randall, who won at Iowa £134.
Gibbons against Dresser Gibbons won the national title last year.
Kevin Dressler has had a wonderful season so far, just that one loss at Oklahoma State and a draw against Gibbons against college wrestling He also lost one time to Gene Mills for one of our international veterans.
Well, I think that loss may right in his mind a little bit because he lost just last week to score from Oklahoma State after leading 71.
It was a little bit of fatigue, so he hasn't really started real fast.
Just kind of let Joe Gibbons take the office, of course.
That's what Joe wants to do.
Now in the Senate, these are the two top in the country.
Number one and two, Yasar was the man who beat Gibbons, but who still ranks third after even with that victory over Gibbons in the East West meet.
Well, I talked to him about that early.
And he said that Yasiel did a real neat little trick where he tried to step inside with one foot when Gibbons pulled it back Then he stepped across the neck and behind the tripped him and took him to his back both times for ten points.
£142 Iowa and Iowa State nine.
The three Iowa State over the Hawks after three matches.
Iowa State's one a pin at a decision summit.
Kim Baglan Gibbons was the first Iowa State.
nine to three are eight to four.
Reminder that coming up tonight on a mission, we're going to meet Dave Osunbor off the mat at the conclusion of the Me Too.
Please stay with us.
I, Iowa.
A public television will present its traditional season ending compilation of highlights and memories.
Set the music and you'll have a chance to meet the crew two of behind the scenes Look at the people who make these telecast go.
Dave Osunbor, of course, was the winner of one of those tremendous upsets in 1981 and we may have started this meet with the same thing that Osunbor finished that one with.
Yes, yes.
Now, Dresser had choice.
He took off.
He leaves three to one as a strong front headlock position.
Well, he's let go of it now.
What he really wants to do is get his head off the top of that bat.
Now it's off to the side.
This is where he really wants to be.
Head up on top gives the bottom man an opportunity to go.
Either way, head off to the side, promising to only go one way and then you block the arm and he can't go that way either.
three to one given away at 142 dressers for dangerous.
He's had a lot of pimples this year.
I don't have my reference on a single leg again for about the third time by Gibbons.
He scored on one of them.
Now you see him, he's trying to reach through and find that foot.
See that free hand come in there.
Still, the Wizards are effective and I and I tell the the crowd, and you can duck.
This is a dangerous spot on knees.
r1 hard rip or twist right there, and Dresser could have a knee injury.
Even though it isn't happening right now, we certainly hope it doesn't.
That's a picture.
This is one of the first part right there.
And these just don't bend laterally.
I've seen kind to come across that other foot.
That's where he wants either a cross or up on his feet.
Here's where knees go right here.
321 No scoring big down here.
There's is man on top.
Gibbons has the single leg, but Pressler has a powerful wizard trying to pull it off with his chin.
Try to hit his head in there, full that whistler off with his hips.
And, of course, the coaches from our state, primarily those brother, Jim, wants him to finish this now.
You got the lead, you dominate the match.
Finish it off, right?
You bet it did.
And pressers on top and making writing time, it's 33.
That's why he's ranked as high as he is, but again, the need for potentially dangerous help.
All right.
You know, we're in the second period, we've used almost the whole period, eight seconds to go.
Well, that's a nice offensive move by Dresser surprise, given, you know, he hasn't done that to him before, and this time he just, yeah, as soon as they they were free and they came in to touch each other, he hit that penetrated deep, circled it, turned it, scored the takedown.
Not many people take Joe Evans down.
It's matter of fact.
Not that slick, either.
Not that.
Oh, that was a I was home right now.
But you know, that's why I hadn't seen it before.
On to the free scene.
Improve on that.
You can't stay back at 33 at the end of two periods.
I was choice, the choice, his dresser, he deferred in the first period, given stuff down and ended up a point down in that period.
Yes, and now his his brother coach has indicated to him that if he gets out, you're going to have to take him down.
Each man has to take down, each man has an escape.
Well, it would seem logical mistake for you to keep track of the score.
Let's say you're out there in a match like this for this kind of problem.
It's hard for you to remember who's ahead, who's behind it, but it's for free to do it.
Dresser reads Kevin's Iowa needs a win.
Because of the Indian high cross, beautiful hot off air to.
Now, try to hold him in court.
He doesn't want to.
three, Doug.
And that was potentially dangerous.
As for a situation.
Wasn't a takedown.
It was the takedown you.
Potentially dangerous to the.
Joe hurt his knee in that hit that.
To see coach people in disbelief, saying, well, how can he get out of that by doing that?
This will take them because he's still a chance for the elevator over the top and it's always been twisted.
Real bad over there.
It's a cheap call, but can't go unnoticed.
Phil Henning explaining to Dan Gable what was going on.
We're a different kind of twisted under a series and now he's got the foot and Joe is in this position and he starts to come in this position now.
As he starts to go here, he's pulling up on the need, walking out with the shoulde and the referee calls it off.
And you know, that's as long as there's no takedown.
You're still in a neutral position.
You can't give the automatic cue for the back like.
North Korean pressure leads four to three.
National feedings can be at stake here.
Oh, yeah.
This is a very important that we see what research is doing so well right now.
The standard is good stance.
He's keeping his knees bent, keep his body down in that position to counter Joe's offense, as well as having moments of his own.
We have one minute to go.
At £142, Russell leads by one, Gibbons has a front headlock.
His head is still not where he wants it to be.
We just got hasn't.
first weekend in office, the pressure might have on offense, and now there's a single leg by giving up people.
It's hard to penetrate through a man's head, you got to get up.
35 seconds to go.
Made the mood that you saw that off him.
I comes into his life to try to keep him out of it.
The crowd is in it again.
Out here after a nine to nothing Iowa State lead early, you see the tie.
That's a small warning against.
Him at all, it's too late for that.
If he gets like.
A big win for Kevin Mazur.
And that's what this Iowa State team is made of.
They need to get, the Iowa team is made up, they come down from nine nothing.
Are you going to listen to a referee talked to you through his headgear?
Oh, yes, we're taking the picture up and threw it all unsportsmanlike conduct, unsportsmanlike conduct, throwing headgear due one time points against Iowa State, but it happened here against the Hawks.
A lot of kids lose track of what's going on.
That's that's a really an unnecessary 18 point deduction there.
That's in the rule book.
You throw the headgear and it's now instead of nine to six instead of nine to six, it's now nine to five.
And here we go with the other one and two man trigger against Harper that would have got him rolling now.
And it's going to be up to trigger to go to Iowa State back in Premiere August and momentum reader.
In Iowa City, Krieger pushed a good deal, Heffernan was not terribly aggressive, but he is here watching it and there are people out.
And the soon as you said, soon as you say it, it comes back like a like a plague against you, doesn't it happen now with Kreeger on the bottom?
That was a slick move by the Iowa all-American ranked number one.
Well, it started with it right away last night.
As you say, it was a little apprehensive now.
He's pretty tough.
He's got that leg stuck inside.
He's got the arm up around the head and under the other arm.
It does not look like much, but I'll tell you, you can get pinned for that thing.
That's how a statesman just hits and catches him off guard, they just drives right through just a straight single high above the five for the takedown.
And Iowa has begun to sketch comedy matches a little bit here now two to one of the scar half an hour after the escape still leads by one year.
But we'll see if Heffernan keeps that offense last time, as you said.
Krieger was really the pusher, and Heffernan wrestled a little apprehensive.
This time he opened up with the shot, but it's a long match, and we'll see if he can keep that and keep that attitude that I'm the number one ranked guy and I can do this nine to five.
It's Iowa State over Iowa City, back to the middle guy scoring an Iowa loss.
There was one point deducted for unsportsmanlike conduct after Kevin Dresser in happiness threw his through his head here.
Yeah, and he just pitched it over to the safe and he did it, you know, because he was excited, not because he was angry.
Still, it's the rules are rule appear to just let it lay there and pick it up, maybe throwing it in the air and caught it himself and his joy.
But when you pick it up, start to pitch it around.
Who's to say the next one doesn't go all the way up into the bleachers?
Krieger in the Red Granite State, Heffernan in the black hole, the Iowa Hawkeyes go back home Coliseum and here's to my nose first, tying up two to one.
Heffernan got a takedown and Krieger has this game.
Now again, Doug, here's a guy Traeger from Iowa State that's so dangerous with was talking about Randle being dangerous with his hips.
Here's another guy that's the same way.
Sometimes when you get him, you really don't have it because he's got that great balance and that ability to change 90 degrees, really, sometimes 180.
If you're coming into it with enough force and those hips will hurt you.
So, you know, we haven't seen all of that yet.
We really haven't had an opportunity to witness it on our show.
But he's a dangerous young wrestler because he's got great balance and hip control.
Heffernan is handling things really well here.
He's right.
He's been in twice on dangerous takedown shots and once made a score almost had it here a moment ago.
Oh, well, he's the guy like that he's against like that.
The whistle still has the arm block radius does.
Scored when he was there was.
He was there.
Get up here.
Krieger dodged a bullet.
What we're seeing so far basically is as Heffernan's really quality shots and gives Krieger scrap and his ability to defend himself.
We're going to have to have an offense.
He's got to be able to generate penetrating offense of his own.
He doesn't seem to have a big hole that he goes to house, maybe where Kruger would prefer to be hit with a nice job going home and score.
And he'll get burned on that.
You don't see a guy like he's giving this much to take it away from him sooner or later, he's going to get it triggers choice and he's asked where he wants to be dug.
I mean, Iowa City, he had a choice.
He didn't take up.
He took down.
And our experience looking at trigger this year is he's very strong on top.
And if he's going to make a win of this against the number one ranked man, you'll have to do it on top.
He's got the arm and the waste.
You saw him synching up the waste.
He starts to put that leg in there.
You know, he look at the arm come around the waist.
That right arm of his is wrapped all the way around, strap on the backbone to the other side.
And that's when he starts to load you up.
He'll pull you one way.
Leggere block cradle, yeah, he's just very good on time, referee referee's counting toward a stalemate here, but heaven is going to fight this, get stalemated all the way through the night, get turned over everyone.
This thing still way too old every time you get this out.
Instead of instead of it having the top man's offensive negligence and his inability to score, Heffron is going to try to take his offense away by by being flat on him.
Keep the hips low.
Nice move by Hepburn at a very nice quick move, but it just in the change right there.
Here's where Kruger's even though it looks like he's in trouble He's got to get his hips up over top to score.
He still has the army to control.
Still, it was a good time for him to hit that switch, right when Glenn Krieger was changing directions and changing pressure.
That's the time to go.
Pop it right when there's a change in pressure.
Jim Gibbons or coaches 69,000,368.
This is his first year unless Anderson is all sitting next to him on the whistle again with a minute and five seconds to go in the second period.
Krieger, trailing 21, is riding Heffernan, the number one ranked man from Iowa.
Sam, he's got that leg on know, starting to play around with the leg and get the aura that he's.
The cyclones lead nine to five.
For weeks.
Kevin Dressler beat Joe Gibbons and Greg Adobe.
Jeff Gibbons otherwise.
Different from last time.
Well, he's got the arm, what is?
There is a warning against Heffernan on the matter.
And of course, that could be significant.
Here's where he wants to be.
Not quite.
That is what he's so good at.
He's really a tough man that.
He is, even though he's underneath, he's got that arm tight, tight.
Now he's lost his shirt to work his way up.
So here takes a lead three to two.
It's going to help Coliseum.
We saw the number one man in the 142 cyclones are hoping that can happen here.
So he's got the arm now.
Watch him, he'll just pull himself over.
He's got the arm and then he'll start to pull the other man up on top of him.
Tell those hips are loaded, then he'll lift up with the toe.
You see us right toe.
They're lifting him up, scoring the back points.
Heffernan takes his choice and takes down.
I don't know if that's a very good decision.
Well, three to two.
He knows he has to score.
I say maybe take off.
He puts himself right back in the snake pit stop and you know, you fish around on the beehive.
You'd like to hunt for honey and for bees He's pulling right back where he wants them again.
He's tougher.
No, you don't break your heart.
No bad points.
Here it comes again.
Still no back points.
It's only three to two triggers.
This goes both could go either way, but he's got a couple of minutes riding time on him and he's piling on it now.
This is not going to happen.
It's great fun.
We'll take another crack.
But as we say, it's only a one point match.
Well, heck, you know, you can take neutral and then try to take them down and win them back.
Your worry so tough how he pulls in the leg on the other side He does.
Is he coached him on that and he's got this leg tied up on one side and he'll.
Kerry comes in for his.
Got an arm tied up.
Oh, no, he's got his hips.
Oh yeah, he lost Evans for four.
He's got the lake tied up, too, but it is right in time for.
Mark Finger, yes, enough that he'll have a point on range up, he's got to get off the bottom first.
God, be able to get up.
Krieger needs to get his head up off the mat, get up out of it.
Heffernan really has to put on the mustard here to try to get Krieger on his back.
It's a 44 score on the board, but Peter has a right at 5.6.
He may let him off and in the.
I think he's going to try to put it to him.
Do you think he's afraid of turning?
Credit turning here for a second.
All right.
Let's see what happens.
five to four finger, but I picked out will tie it a takedown, what for Heffernan would be a draw.
And there are only 14 seconds to go.
Oh, boy.
Nice move by Heifer.
Oh, real nice.
And a warning against the we're going out.
For now, speaker has to go.
And trigger.
The freshman beats the all Americans, and for the second match in a row, we've seen the number one ranked man lose Amazing.
Or I should call the number two man win because I don't think anybody lost it.
Oh, stress where they asked him.
Krieger in Mason City and the score after £150 is Iowa State twelve and Iowa five.
We were laughing a while ago before the meet started.
They had a they had a score on the board and we said, What would it be for that at the time?
And it is here.
Well, was it was twelve to five and we were talking about it well after four matches, maybe five.
That's right.
The last time that Iowa State beat Iowa was when they opened up in Louisiana.
So they started this time with one of those unexpected pins, and that's the last one.
So.
And there's the score at halfway Iowa State twelve and the Iowa Hawkeyes five at its Iowa State, surprising some people in the lead.
We hope that you're getting a big kick out of this.
I'll tell you, I win Iowa states.
Always fun.
Each team wins one.
Maybe they didn't expect to win and loses one they didn't expect to lose.
Yeah, and the crowd's really getting into this myth has been tremendously exciting to be a participant, and it's been fun for us on Iowa College Wrestling this year.
I hope you'll write to us if you are interested in giving us a comment or criticism.
There's the address right to college wrestling and care of Iowa Public Television Box 1758 Box 1758 Des Moines 536 College Wrestling and its 10th anniversary season.
I'm Doug Brown with Chuck Patton and highest high school wrestling is still ahead of us.
We have that on Saturday Night Live.
I'd forgotten how many years we've been doing that in the role, and it's the the best in the state of Iowa, and some of the best in the state of Iowa have made these two teams here Saturday night, beginning at 6:30.
The State Iowa High School Wrestling Championships from Veterans Auditorium in Des Moines.
That is one of those people we saw for quite a few years in high school wrestling championships, Royce Alta at £158 for Iowa.
We're going into the last five weeks.
Iowa has a good deal of strength through here.
So the crowd Coliseum is off.
So an upset right at the start is hoping for some more here.
There's no state of Iowa State fought off.
Finally, a move and hurt injury time and injury at £158 right away.
The last time these guys wrestled, we saw a tape come out and get a quick start.
Here he starts to come in the same way, you know, I don't know exactly what happened.
You know, he starts right here starting to come in to him, has alger in the in the leg and I think maybe he catches a knee up in the groin, perhaps.
And I see him some problems.
Crowd behind us in the replay saw that and there was a big oh, so no question about it.
As we said in Iowa City, they wrestled Al Gore's victory eleven to seven over state.
He had to come from behind to do it.
Yeah, he was down four to start with.
I mean, he taped and that match opened up with a takedown and a near fall, which then sort of slowed down.
I think this is where maybe the biggest, biggest match of the meet right now for Iowa State, they can get this one.
They are definitely a threat to win because it's your starting early the second half here.
Everybody calm down a little bit for the intermission.
People went out, got a little popcorn, you know, and the teams have to start over again.
Well, you know, anything can happen, and we all know that and we understand that.
But Iowa is very strong in these these weights right through here.
The Bill State has been very representative with Al Gore in the past.
There's an inside trip and Tate has the ability here.
But.
He doesn't have much respect now.
He wants to throw.
What Insight trip takes got to throw the get out of it, Alger watches that insight trip.
There's the.
I'll tell you, I'll state has been a tough guy this year.
two to one, he pinned Johnny Johnson of Oklahoma his last time out, although he was far behind when he did it.
When he starts to think that he can.
He's going to be a much better performance.
Thinking that again makes a big difference.
So he's resting a little apprehensive against Al Gore letting Alger have the offense, although he's ahead.
Al Gore has been the guy that's been putting the pressure in.
And Bill needs to create an offense that can't let Al Gore have the offense like this.
Can't let him have the the push, the pressure.
Royce, sophomore from Lisbon, fits right into that mold of Hawkeye wrestler's.
Top ten come out from the opening buzzer and just go after he doesn't know how to go backwards.
Well, was one of his problems.
Hasn't been in the past.
He goes so hard.
Sometimes he wears himself out.
Yeah, he's done in five, five and a half minutes.
Single leg, guy.
Nice partner out by.
Dr.
Started to act as a shell.
Now you see his ability, you know, you watch him do those kind of things, and you know that that takes athletic talent that isn't coached.
You know that a reaction type of thing if you depend on balance and quickness and reaction.
So he can do it on the offense serious.
His really first offensive effort.
He doesn't quite have possession, but he's got to get through his feet first.
Holly.
Oh.
Nice counter by Al Gore.
Great.
Interesting as a final decision to keep from being taken down now, keep it in, got to keep it hard down.
Hit him with the hit.
LG was going to come in behind him, get the lake and come to his feet, nothing.
Boy, we picked up right where we left off.
Yeah, it's harder to take over after we have 27 seconds left in the first period.
£158 Iowa State twelve, Iowa five in the team score here comes out to around.
We'll take of to show a little bit, right?
There he comes out of it.
Well, we've had some tremendous scrambles here.
There's the end of the first period of six to two leave for take a lot of talent and let you know that he can.
Perhaps it will let him know that he can.
That may be the biggest factor.
So, you know, he tries to raise his hips, come up too fast.
Instead of coming in under with the hips.
He comes up too fast.
Alger sits underneath him.
Now LG is going to step across take feels.
The pressure changes goes right on through with it controls.
Now he drops the hips down low and scores that take down right there.
He'll take Junior from Waterloo.
He's only lost three times and so has an Algiers only lost three times.
These are these are great records from these men I'll take in.
The last rankings wasn't in the rankings, but I think it was mainly because he missed a couple of matches seconds.
Well, it beats.
This guy is going to be in the rankings, that's for sure.
And Royce, of course, is number three.
Now remember last time, last time out on top Tom him go to Gillette, actually have to have a seven to two lead That's a lot of confidence on your feet, isn't it?
It sure is.
Archer came back the last time, and one must be hoping that people will start to show defense and they're here.
Take this one.
And the Iowa State coach, he definitely doesn't want that.
They didn't want their man to get passive here.
No court looking backwards.
But it is really a mental thing.
I mean, we see it time after time from where we sit, and sometimes it's just like the athlete has to see himself say, Gosh, if I can get ahead of a guy, wrestle this stuff, all I can do is just stay tough and I'll get some more ahead because he does have the talent Royce out.
He doesn't play and he just keeps coming.
He's down by five.
Well, he hasn't generated an offense yet, but he's just pushing a little hard like he's going to score.
He's going to have to have an offense.
The state can score, and here he comes out of position.
Now he's in on a lake himself.
They're on the edge of the map.
They just have to finish the minutes for him, but he's going to he just has to keep his alger from scoring on him.
And he has to be very active, but Alger is also a pin or two.
I like to be able to turn paint right from this spot or is eaten up a minute, ten seconds right here.
seven to two coats gave us looking at that with a little bit disgust, wondering how the heck does this happen?
Ilja down by 58.
And on the labor camp, he's been there quite a bit.
Ross.
Stepping down and taking instead of getting back.
Let me step down a second, just let his whole body go with its right to the left.
We have 30 seconds to go in the second period and the referee is saying I'll have to give and have to do something or I'm going to call you off.
And he did both of.
five, seven, 22, Oh.
This is not going the way Al Gore wanted it to go when he took that top position.
They've been better off to just take neutral.
He's in a double.
The take follows.
It fights him off as the year goes by inside the garage, they're gone.
Things are going to get penalized, harassing him on race, telling him that he's pushing it out.
Gore got a little shot on the state.
Doesn't need to do this.
Just keep wrestling offensively.
17 seconds to go.
And counting, you see the time coming down.
We're in the second period.
A lot of time left.
Lot of time.
Nothing yet takes out of that one, but he's got a single right now.
He's got 72 at the end of the second period.
I don't think Gallagher expected him to go with that.
You know, he didn't foul with his hips.
Take one down to his to his rear.
And then he didn't follow it.
Or he might have had him on his back.
I'll take.
Notice he's grown some hair now, Doug.
That's right, he went through the first part of the year it and he starts on top five now.
Tate's going to take on top.
He's going to get caution here for having his head off to the side.
I miss it.
Tom in seven to two, take up three take downs in the first period and an escape in the second letyou.
Well, he's got the arm tied up and this is this is real dangerous, Ralph You've got the arm tied up and crushed at 1520 seconds of time and a lot of energy.
Boy, you don't have to be there.
An armbar now, the half Nelson to if he can get over to the other side, he's got some trouble.
We may not get him over, but he can just eat up a lot of energy and time.
The thing is that they wanted him over right now.
What if he is behind?
You know, if he needed it, he could get a canal system down there for it.
Right after this, use it.
He could get all four stone on top of this thing.
Just got to get out to the side on it.
And a stalemate.
It seemed like the Iowa State fans live in a waste of a good mood, a good positio you're behind by two.
I bet you could get out of that, you know, get out to the side and go to one of the smaller.
That's still Henning is telling Bill TV he's got to make use of that, or he'll warn him a minute 23 to go.
Also has five points to make up five points.
Iowa State leads in the Big twelve to five.
Now it looks like it might get to his feet.
Still nothing there yet still has that, but it still hasn't.
But here's.
That's what he needs, he has to either get back once.
50 seconds to go.
I'll tell you, it's going to be a wild 50 seconds.
I think Al Gore has lost some of the steam right now.
He's last one tired.
He's still making good on a state level with the states, got a chance to win, just wrestle with him and the crowd is up on a feet here.
Hilton Coliseum.
We've had a bunch of we've had some thrillers.
one after another here.
Again, take gets Ilja flat.
All right, this is it.
He's got the arm mouse right here jiggling at the stake.
This is the end of the market to keep it.
Got, you know, Rockwell.
He's trying to kill them if he can.
He looks like he would like to go one way or another with it, get back points, he's not going to quit.
We.
He got to that point.
Bodies on its feet and Hilton Coliseum needed to win this one, they can win this meet.
I think they didn't believe it to.
With right in time, it's tended to take and it's off the charts, a major decision Bill, take.
Browser twelve, 45.
Ted, the two major decision.
And now.
I'll tell you these horses here for Iowa.
The horses are really going to have to get to work.
They can't just be safe and get three point decisions.
They got to go out to try to pin somebody.
Now they've got a lot of plowing through right now.
I'll tell you that one team point deduction when they lost it and that made your decision against them, even though the people at the lost, those are going to be two critical points in this league.
Banners Dale on the Left for Iowa State against a national champion.
Marty Kessler, ranked number one for Iowa and our state is ranked fifth.
He's had a great year, but Kessler, of course, has lost the 158 pound national titlist last year.
He's lost one time this year, and that was to a wrestler, not stalemates and not eligible college wrestler Kevin Jackson, who is at Iowa State, who was not eligible this year.
Well, Man Hours Dale has a great deal of talent, and he's a real, dangerous wrestler from two spots.
one is from his feet when he gets in and he can throw, the other is when he's in that down position and he gets that standing switch working.
Kessler is just very well-rounded, real solid, doesn't give anything up and is intense and is intense.
And it can't go a can go the route through, say it out high in many ways.
To me, he he personifies the the Iowa wrestler program.
He goes, he goes that.
The banners has been tough this year.
Wednesday will wrestle with Kessler, this can be a very good match.
He is no slouch, believe me.
But I'll tell you, I'm one of the things we need to look forward to here sometime.
What's going to happen up to up to £190?
There's a little strategy.
Each man, each team has multiple wrestlers available and I know it depends on who's what the score is, as to who will go .
You saw a tape there.
He deserves to get a little congratulation and a little attention because he figured.
That's right.
Well, when we get that guy and we get the Goldman from Iowa and Volcker from Iowa State, it'll be interesting to see if they're going to make those decisions.
Iowa State has to put their man out first.
They could put out Metzger, or they can put out Volcker, and that will make a determination what Iowa decides to do.
Kessler is in on the leg but still manages to fight them off, snapped out drive by Kessler.
Kessler is doing the portion here.
There is.
Author Eric Holder on the right, we haven't seen him since the last Iowa meet, when he broke a bone and a stress fracture in his match and he's lost a gold mine.
And I know they'd prefer not to use him.
I'd like to maybe save him until the Big Eights next week.
But you know, yeah, well, you know what?
We could do this.
We could see Iowa State putting out Metzger deciding not to wrestle Voelker and then they could.
Iowa wait in Raleigh, came from Biopsy Valley, and they could put him out there thinking he could beat both man stalling.
Metzger is going Goleman up to heavyweight to wrestle her atlas that Steve Metzger and Goldman last year used to beat her Apple+ at 190.
So they think he can do it again.
That weight may be a different this that's going to be real fun to watch Oh yeah, we've got some good ones.
Jeff Gassman and Chip Morelli coming up next on 177 Iowa.
The best you want to see the best do what it has to be and a six to five Iowa State right now.
So the Hawks know what they have to do.
They just have to win big here on.
Well, I'll tell you right now we're seeing a heck of a match by Wednesday.
He's keeping it real neutral position on.
And when we watch this match go, and so far, Kistler hasn't been able to do penetration one.
And that means that Wednesday has done a good job of keeping him off it You know, they both been one for star.
A lot of it neutralizing it.
John Garoppolo's back in the tunnel dam gave a lot of rice was down.
Mark Johnson, assistant coach on the left bottom.
You're looking at the potential to see that 36 match streak snapped right here.
Well, I think as I said, some people really began to think maybe it can happen as soon as tape came out on top of Ilja and by a big score of a four point win.
This time.
And our style to fight them still down just for half.
Yes, Della, neutralize them, they'll stand up if he can take that away He's got some, some potential to be tough on him, but then they'll get to his feet.
He has a great standing switch in the bottom in your set top man on.
Marty Kessler, two time Big Ten champions last year, a national title holder at 158, the runner up the year before.
He's doing is his right leg.
Drag on the game takes out a way to escape from an unassailable now one to nothing.
But of course, our style is going to have to get some offense going to know neither.
Both men have been warned.
Well, he has some walks.
It's just that he hasn't.
There's a little fake Reagan to the single.
He's got to try to step past the foot so he can get past the good.
Then he can start the follow up, follow the leg on out the Windsors keeping him down under.
We're very early in the period, a lot of time for to try to bring this old home, and he's OK. Well, he's got to do this, try to find the foot on the other side.
If he isn't going to get to his feet and he's got to try to come on the other side now, then ourselves, we'll try to switch him off of this.
No, no, no, no.
I don't know.
That's Goldman, Dwayne Goldman.
A lot is going to rest on this man's shoulders, Dwayne Goldman, wherever he wrestles.
That's right.
If you missed a little of this match, this meet so far.
Perry Summit pinned Matt Egeland, that was really the tempo start that got the ball going for Iowa State for 24 in the match, Kim Declan Kelly beat Temora 54 to.
Yeah, nice little duck me there.
Nothing yet.
At 134, Randall Heath, Jeff, give and take the floor, that dresser probably took over the number one rating by the Joe.
Give us another heck of a match for the three, but trigger upset.
Well, I don't know if you call up Stephanie Beech Heffernan at 150 for Iowa State.
six.
The more and then Bill Tate got a major decision over Royce Ilja in a surprising turn of events for a lot of people on the Hawks also lost a team fight when Dresser, after his victory, just forgotten what he was doing and threw his head here.
And that's a loss of a point for unsportsmanlike conduct its Iowa Stat 16 Iowa five or with a mismatch right now, they're ahead one to nothing.
Although Kessler has done most of the offensive effort, this you know, he's he just got penalized.
Oh, there's the point where even that's that's what I was looking for.
How long is that going to take for that to happen?
Well, it took it to the end the very end of the second period when I was doing all shooting.
So now it's 11.
That's a 1981 season, Iowa State v Iowa that you're in the match at Iowa State and Jim Gibbons, the coach won the title at £134.
Like this is only national championships I.
His choice choice goes confessor.
That's what he wants to go down.
He wants to score from the bottom, Kessler.
Kessler, I should say I'm back at 42 again, 11.
A lot of exciting matches to big to wallow back into the to the memory and just stay there and enjoy them a little bit 15 seconds later.
I got 15 seconds ready.
All right, just learning about that.
Mike Bandar's dale and hours, they'll strap on top.
He's got a lot of length and he can be very good here.
He likes to leg.
And if he gets his mindset right, he can be great.
This they're going to keep him off air so far, we've seen the Hawks have some trouble on the bottom and it cost them some matches.
I'm going to warn you next up next, I'm going to penalize your twisted dealer.
Phil Henning didn't like the way that he was going at all.
Well, what you can't do is put your foot one knee in front, step over the leg with the other one and then pull up to the side in order to try to attempt to pull the man's hips down.
It's a twisting knee lock and it's illegal and said, I'm going to warn you this time.
Next time I'll penalize.
And our still on top.
Time has switched over in his column, though it doesn't appear there's going to be a point here, but it's 11.
Well, it might be, you know, it's got.
Gets her on the back, and he's good enough to do that.
He's got to pressure himself.
He keeps letting get up here, eventually he'll he'll loosen.
Marty Kessler of Iowa with a 11 score.
Started on the bottom in this third period and wants to come out to.
For five.
Iowa State fans thought that phone call a little bit to kick their legs, but.
You've seen enough of the position, Marty Kessler.
He's worried about writing time, you got to worry about getting out of here, he's going to lose in that one .
The one is the score, an escape from an hour's jail, a penalty point against Bandar's jail in the second period, and Australia's is tough on top.
Now Kessler is out, and it's two to one.
Kessler.
Have an offense yet, but he's he's still in this match mentally, which means that he might, might generate an offense and score .
And he doesn't he doesn't he hasn't shown it on his face and his style.
40 seconds to go.
He's still in there aggressively if he'll go ahead and hit one or more shots, he might score on.
On the edge of the map, and he's been warned for Stalin also, so he's got to be able to press the advantage right here.
We have only 21 seconds to go.
Now, Kessler is where he wants to be.
That's what he wants.
Well, he's got a bill that he got to stay down toward the foot.
Don't get up for the hips can hurt him.
I got to hit the move right here.
He got an opportunity.
Can't wait for him.
You know that thing?
And Kessler, when did he get into no, no writing time?
It's a one point match, Kessler to Van Iredale one.
But if you're an Iowa State coach, you say I can beat him at the Nationals.
I'm right there.
The Hawks are wrestling tired of this man?
Yeah, I'm sure it is true.
All right.
three points now for Iowa.
That brings them up closer and closer, 16 to eight.
Iowa State still leads in this big meet at Hilton Coliseum we are watching on Iowa Public Television.
Kessler two to one.
We go to 177.
Iowa is definitely favored here.
It's Rico.
Jim Morelli ranked number three up against Bob Gassman, a gas.
Made the first offensive move, we've watched Gassman all year make offensive moves and bounce out of there now, the last time we saw him against northern Iowa, he did not bounce out of there.
He hit it on some of those offensive move and scored takedowns.
And if he'll do that against generally, he can score.
He's an excellent talent.
It's just a chip really is so dangerous you can kind of get afraid of going on in there.
He's another one of those guys.
Like I was telling Krieger and Randall, his hips can hurt you so much.
You get that you got a tiger by the tail.
Yeah, he's a great balance, good hip control, and he's an accountant.
In fact, he was a three time Pennsylvania champion with some wrestling that's going on.
Goldman is up as if he's going to go with £190.
We'll see.
It's eight points for Iowa State so far, 16 to eight.
However, Iowa won two straight the three straight decisions they would win by 1.17 to 16, which is what they are .
They're in a battle to keep that streak alive.
Let me tell you a stalemate.
They don't dare lose because of these very interesting things Iowa has that Iowa State has the number five ranked heavyweight in John Garoppolo's gap.
It's in Iowa.
He's been here before now.
Chip really is got to be careful when you try to take him down with that now, look at that.
Temporarily, but take down.
He's a good trader from the top.
He's a Pinner.
And if I ever needed a pin would be in this match Adobe here.
Or in the next one, I don't know who's going to be up yet, I don't see who's warming up for Iowa State.
Gas when it mattered most had made, in fact, all the offensive beautifully, but surely is so dangerous.
Well, this isn't helping them much right here, you know, it's just gas was down there to paralyze kind of putting pressure on on top of point scoring tanks going away.
If Iowa wants to win the meat, they got to have big wins out of this next two weeks because they're in trouble anyway.
Yes, if you just joined us and heard me say that, it's a fact that this is not the decided stalemate Iowa has won 36 straight.
There's Eric Bulker, there is Steve Massacre.
They're both getting ready.
They both weighed in, they both weighed £190 today, that's illegal, but he's down to.
I would anticipate that Iowa State would like Aspen not to get turned, you know, they don't need that at eight, ten, twelve point win going against them.
And of course, that's always going to be trying to do is to turn him.
So when that happens, sometimes you get a little careless and Gassman is very good wrestler.
He's got these capable of scoring.
He just has to look for his openings and wrestle to win, rather than not to not to go.
Right, right now, he's just walking out, kicking himself and getting turned over.
Still be on the legs.
16 to eight Iowa State over Iowa City Iowa State victories Krieger Decision Kelly Decision Take a major decision summit in Iowa has had decisions from Randall Dresser and Kessler top Enron.
This is what is generally considered the meat of the Iowa lineup.
That's the really tough guys know where their dominance against the Iowa State opponent might come.
But they thought they might dominate the last and they had to fight for their life.
Well, you never know, it's so far gone a long way.
He's not doing what he wants to do, I'm sure temporarily from Iowa is not getting over, and that's what he thinks he should be doing.
Imagine that.
Never, never mind what happens here.
That there's going to be a lesson in this for somebody.
Wrestling will next week.
I would imagine this is going to be a little discussion going on.
It's going to be a tough week for both these teams as they get ready for a competition.
The qualifying meets are their conference championships at the end of the first period.
two to nothing ship around.
I was to.
Generally gets his chance to defer your choice, gas goes down.
How state chooses down.
I mean, you said six to eight cyclones over the Hawks.
I don't think we've seen the last amazing incident yet today, so the crowd isn't in it yet.
They haven't been since early in the hour and hours dale match.
And I can make a difference.
Well, this is a real tough spot right here.
He's got the inside inside says around the lake.
He's got to be able to do is to free his arm.
The man on top temporarily has that arm tied up.
If he's got that arm free, he would have been able to go to post-trial.
He gets his legs.
But the referee say you're going to have to do something with a leg.
Well, I'm sure Colin on unusual that he'll take a chip rally.
If he does that, he'll take the perrelli out of his office For L.A. managed to get the Lakers in the game.
He's piling up, riding time, a lot of it, he leads to nothing, and he has almost two and a half minutes worth of writing time for.
But he really hasn't scored on top, except for that riding time, warning top man his blank and writing warning.
There's a warning that his Herald has to been pleased with the way his old charges are.
I'm sure he's excited about this.
Who isn't?
Oh yeah.
Whichever team you're from, it's just good wrestling.
This is a.
A lot of people are going to wish they were here.
I'll tell you 60 days.
I will say that generally sarcastically, with a lot of air time, he assumes he's going to have to go up on the feet.
Strongly call against temporarily early from Iowa for blank and right and on top.
This is going to really change.
The outcome of this match might go just this one.
But that's where he wants to be and it takes a little bit of time to work the offense.
Not that it's wrong.
It's just that he's got.
Really interesting.
I said, I'm afraid this makes it.
A lot of guys in those spots.
Well, you remember in 1981, Randy Lewis dislocated his elbow at this man in a match with Joe Jeff.
Left in this case, gallons.
Gassman was in on the leg and Chipper really counted it.
He's in here now.
Champ really steps in behind, holds it with his foot, walks in behind and keeps it right there.
You know, as soon as he hit it in behind the elbow, it started to pull it.
Now he's starting to come up the other way.
You can see the hill.
Yes, indeed.
His knee is kind of blocking so that the man's leg can't bend around it.
There's nowhere for that knee to go.
Now, the question for Iowa State absolutely is how seriously is this knee hurt?
I'll tell you what the big eights coming up right now you have to look at is the dual meet more important than the Big Eights?
Or is there ligament damage done to that thing?
That lateral collateral can go off easy in those spots, and sure, they're going to see how loose it is going to get the takedown because the screen took place.
No takedown, by the way.
Well, I don't know.
I was not.
That was not illegal.
The came from up here, and it was just he can straighten his leg up to prevent it.
You hear Phil Henning talking to Chip O'Reilly about the move.
There's the address the right to if you'd like to have no takedown, if you would like to make a comment or a criticism of.
Our broadcast towers, restful Iowa Public Television Fox 1758 in Iowa, 50306, Gassman was on his feet and he's going to go.
And that gets the crowd in it again.
Yes.
So let's listen to this before his control was an issue.
It's two to one.
Kimberly leads.
Has been there.
Here he is at one.
That's fine, it wasn't hard to change.
Yes, generally is like a he's like a cobra up there waiting to strike because he's so dangerous as a cattle rustling well, Gaspin can go ahead and do that offense.
He's been good at it.
You know, he attacks the legs.
He just wants to keep his attack a little lower.
I'm sure we don't want to get up for action hero.
His waist going up higher than that gives you trouble.
But good point to take down.
Kimberly.
And injury time is call again.
Well, they don't want they don't want to take this thing too far.
They don't want to lose six points for a default.
Gassman isn't going to let up.
Our instinct says, go ahead and wrestle, you know, I mean, you see boxers get up from being knocked out and they think they can go back in boxing He's a good athlete and he just feels like he can when they start to take a look at it.
Maybe they'll find that pressure point.
Here he is, snapping him down, starting to come in behind him, and he just catche outside three times and gets a boy.
But it isn't against the joints.
He's just sideways.
Yeah, but when it's hurt, it hurts.
That's right.
seven seconds to go in the second period, Jim Borelli.
Is leading by three.
Well, I just had a spiral right there.
Stop it.
All right now we got one for you to go.
Iowa State leads in Iowa six to eight.
We're at £177.
We have Goldman.
We don't know who's coming up next.
Adobe Goldman.
It may be Volcker and maybe Neil Metzger.
And maybe Raleigh can Adobe some coaching strategy here.
Chipper Morelli goes on the bottom.
Gasman likes the league.
I think that that's his good leg is the one that he's trying to protect.
Chip Roy took the chip the down position because he thinks he can score, it gives him one more point, gives him an opportunity then to come bac and maybe get that major decision to try it.
And I am generally at least five for one.
It's important that every point matters here because the meat so close take down four, temporarily seven to 12.
He might be wise right now.
Let him just cut him loose unless he can turn him over, just cut him loose because he's been penalized in this position.
I was just passing out, trying not to get turned on as a riding type.
And so if you were able to get out and take it on the ticket, it would be a major decision.
Gasoline against Chip Ali, there's Rico, only a junior.
Well, he's wrestling is as fresh as any of the guys on the team so far have, like he understands what's going on, what he has to do, stay in with this game and he does not let the escape go at seven to two.
It's actually a six point difference because generally we'll get a riding time point.
And if the take down comes, it's an eight point lead, that's major decision territory.
Arbor Gasman has not been warm yet he's.
He was the offensive wrestler, almost the whole mess.
All said he just.
A big take off for Kimberly.
It's almost like he's decided that if I can just keep it within eight, you know, instead of go ahead, getting that offense that's winning is so dangerous.
nine to two is the score temporally with riding time would have a major decision that would make the team score 16 to twelve.
And let me go into those last two matches.
Well, he's got 45 seconds.
I wouldn't be surprised.
Let him see him.
Let him go right now as try to get another, take them out.
He hasn't done it.
He's maybe he's going to try to find something Yeah, like that.
Yeah, I just try to just try to see.
Now it's nine, two, three a seven point jobs.
And here's the place where gasoline needs to go.
Makes a difference of a point.
This team, unfortunately, they'll lose it again.
And now, Jim, the rally definitely has a major decision.
eleven, the three, he said three takedowns in this period, gas been slowed down.
Now maybe the knee caused that, but I think it's more mental.
You know, he's trying to keep the thing close and it all of a sudden they got away from him.
He kept on wrestling the offense.
I don't know how badly that knees hurt.
We sure hope it's not too bad.
Keep him out of the gate, and it's an eight point difference with riding time.
As soon as there's pressure on that knee, Gastelum goes away.
He's trying to stay.
Stay loose with that knee.
Jim Borelli would like to get some bad ones, maybe a few things, but the chance.
Writing time or early.
To make the decision.
Well, for three or Rico temporarily over.
Gosh, one of Iowa State and saw the Hawkeyes have won two in a row, and here comes gold, when he comes out first, he doesn't have to do that.
It's going to be poker.
It's going to be Eric Bulker coming out for Iowa State at £190, the first time out since he wrestled against the.
There's electricity in this hall because Iowa State still leads by four and we have the heavyweight match propolis against and are still coming up.
A freshman against a senior and Volker Walker didn't win 18 matches in a row because he's just an ordinary freshman and he's an outstanding competitor and is out here now, apparently because the coaches feel he's ready and they want him to go in the big eight.
All they want to avoid a big major switch in points here.
Actually, Iowa State has to win one of these matches.
And that's it.
Yes.
That's it.
Then make a difference what happens in this way?
Even a pin, even a technical fall for Iowa.
Iowa State has to win one match that's having one of these two.
Well, I think what Volcker is going to do is try to stay low now, keep a low level attack on Goldman.
And if Goldman wrestles as a normal style, what we've always watched him do, he's going to try to keep his center of gravity and his hips low also and keep Goldman from going in underneath it.
The first time these two men met in Iowa City, Goldman one, ten to four.
And he also he really wanted to bowl for our top.
That's how it crested that ankle, a stress fracture in there.
This time, Goldman, can't you see him coming in with that while?
Beautiful shot.
But cutting a little off balance right there, he was gone one way and he came back and just had the arm wrapped almost got him on his back.
Goldman, such an outstanding wrestler, he's finished three years in a row as runner up in the Nationals after winning Big Ten titles.
He is undefeated in 20 60, and he wants a pin if he can get it or a technical ball to score.
Well, he's got so much pressure on the arm, he can't use it, so he's trying to let up and let it go.
Let it go, slide off to the nearest.
And of course, Invoker keeps his hips down flat.
Nothing he can do with it going on in the leg in.
This was where he headed last time to highlight that you have to block an arm out on one side of the hip to roll a guy over it and trying to block the arm that still.
Well, it's been a thriller.
There's her raffle, is talking to his coach, Eddie Bannock, who was on the Iowa team the last time Iowa State beat Iowa in 1981.
Eric Voelker, a freshman, went to Dallas.
Center, Dallas County, Grimes.
That was center high school.
Yeah, I guess I it's hard for me to know.
I can't remember sometimes which what's the name of the town and what's the name of the school from week to week?
And when Goldman comes from Colorado Springs.
Well, he's knocked him down here a couple of times, so he hasn't been effective at turning him over so that, you know, as long as that, the action goes the way it is right now, this plays right into Iowa State's hands.
Time slides by the man doesn't get turned over, so they don't have a big score going against the.
Crowd got into it a little bit, and but again, to do nothing old man over poker.
That's Gibbons.
He's about to experience the first real big win of his life, and he's had some big wins.
But well, if he can get it, it's possible.
Yeah, it's awful.
Close 16 to twelve the cyclones over the Hawkeyes.
We're at 190 Goldman against Vulcan.
Well, he's got the thought in his mind right now, so it starts to be the strateg of how do we do these next couple so we can get this thing back?
You see right now the elbow, Volcker's elbows, what's keeping him from going over right there, it's the elbow seat underneath Goldman.
That's what he can't touch.
And there's that like big news that people don't like the end of the first period, Goldman.
Nothing.
The choice.
Belongs to.
Well, ask the Volcker, well, we'll have to return to your memories of our college wrestling season for you to look at here after the meet is over, and we'll also take a look at the people who are behind the scenes when the camera turn the dial, switching the slider, moving the sliders and telling us what to to say on which because we we're CPR and I never say anything without having it checked out first.
Eric Eric Voelker ghost on top against number one ranked Dwayne Goldman at the whistle Goldman comes to the field immediately picks him right out of there, guys.
We're at Hilton Coliseum, Iowa Public Television and our big finish to our 10th anniversary college wrestling season.
Iowa and Iowa State.
The Cyclones still leave with just this match and one more to go 16 to twelve seniors.
The outstanding rest of us because they beat the defending national champion shade in that and some other people and a group of others.
He's got he got that cross.
When he's got to just keep the hips high, take him out.
Eric Gable's experienced this before his new book, both here at Hilton and at Harvard Tucker.
Well, you know, there's a part of him.
He doesn't.
I know that he he loves to see this meat become a big meat again.
But he'd like to win it.
And a couple of things going on in his mind right now.
one of them is how do we get to get two straight wins out of these people?
Goldman needs to win and the heavyweight to.
He's got a power.
Is a little upset with himself after that one.
Let's take a look.
He gets caught right here with the head and he's too high right now.
He's in a position where he could get reversed and Kim is just power.
Horse came right on through there.
And I think a little speed on the camera.
OK. three to nothing, Goldman, over Volcker.
So it takes his offense away when he holds him in there or takes place on the top.
That score where Iowa has to win, Iowa has to win both Iowa.
Oh, comes in for another nice take time.
I had anticipated you just keep doing that instead of trying to turn him over right now that he just start to intentionally release him.
Well, you know, when you look at it, it doesn't matter.
We say Iowa has to win two matches the matter what, no matter how you go about it, they have to win both of them.
That's Iowa State has to win one.
I would anticipate he's just going to try to take Parker down, let him up.
He's not doing anything on top of that.
Walker can hold him in here.
That's what he's trying to do now is just hold him in that tight position five to one.
Got an extended and extended.
And Goldman spins around and scores, makes it seven to one, seven or two after the escape.
nine, the two.
I was air conditioning is top for those for Volcker coming back.
And they took a chance when they put him out here.
Well, that's true.
And plus it's it's tough to start with.
Run this this big.
You go a month off and all of a sudden you start with a guy.
That's yeah, it's a shame.
Yeah.
Who was the last guy?
Russell was this guy.
And it's a big lead for Goldman, too.
The Hawks have won two in a row.
Choice was choice it.
Mark Sinclair is going to wrestle for Iowa at heavyweight and John Propolis for Iowa State just happened so many times in the past.
This stage comes down to the heavyweight match.
And it's what I must say to have it happen.
That's right.
You see that picture there of Coach Gable.
He's not sitting passively in the chair anymore.
He said these applications directions.
Well, it matters.
If this team can win that they've won three in a row.
Iowa State has not had anything happen here to their advantage since 158.
That's going to be terrible now Goldman is going to try to really establish a on Falcon nine to three all.
Equivalent of like ten to three, what do you want to do is not let Volcker hold on to it.
Don't get in these positions where Volcker can hold him a up.
Goldman, one of the most experienced one of the best wrestlers in Iowa, has and has had stalling this man.
He's also one of the best trainers.
A warning against Volcker.
Jim Gibbons is a little discouraged about that, and he calls the referee over and I have to watch what he says.
Erica, the shot to get him there in the first place knows this is over a period of time he's been tying.
He's holding on tying up He's been backing off.
He takes a shot of me once law.
But this has been over a period of time and he just backed off.
I understand what you're saying, but who's been for a period of time?
That's something Mark suggested starting center on the Iowa football team He's back out on.
three time state champion, he'll be coming up a heavyweight that he and Harapan decide this.
Right now, he's got to able to get past that arm to be able to score.
And it's interesting.
Iowa doesn't have Hammond in the lab, didn't come over with them.
There's some communication problem there between the coaching is heavyweight with a brain seller in.
There is much bigger than her obvious, Propolis has had good luck with some bigger heavyweights this year.
Depends on what kind of wrestling condition Salinger's him.
Right, well, that's the truth.
Right now we're seeing that basically poker from Ohio State is doing just what he want to do, and that's what he's been able to keep.
No Goldman story.
He told me.
I'm the three.
Like to make it a three point decision because this ruling heavyweight.
Iowa State.
That's right.
That's why this takedown that Goldman wants is so important.
They can't afford to let it came up like that versus just one arm rocket and all that gets it.
That was a big takedown.
Oh, such a big one.
Still, with two big things that I said at the time was when we had the headgear thrown off after the match and the wrestler and then when they got some major decision at 158, now those two team points loom large now.
Well, it's going to be exactly tied right now.
It is 16, all going to heavyweight.
A major decision for Goldman against Eric Holder.
I think Iowa State would prefer not to have Walker out there, but he wanted to go and he did go.
It's eleven to three, twelve to three with right in time for Goldman.
That's the third straight win for the Hawks in our poll for the first time, even with Iowa State.
And it's all up.
And the crowd at youth policy is on its feet above 9000.
Here's.
Number five, settling her is a first as a crackerjack wrestler, and he's a lot bigger than parabolas, so there's a lot bigger and I'm sure he isn't in shape to of the same kind of messed up look in wrestling.
These are three times the champion with a wealth of experience, but in high school, not in college.
And there's a lot of diversity training for football and training for wrestling.
What will happen her coming around now as well?
You can neutralize ProPlus, but it's hard to be able to take him out of position because he maintains he's back on his feet, maintains good position Going to be a little coaching in this match.
Yes, there's going to be a lot of excitement, but perhaps as that low level attack as the ability to get in there and shoot those outside shots, it doesn't absorb all the way to all the time.
Of course, there's coming off an ankle injury that's kind of prevented him from training a lot.
But he does have that background that will get in the way of events with the side.
It's Iowa states are ruthless against Iowa silica at heavyweight to decide, yes, if you just joined us at this site, the Iowa Iowa State hit Barack Obama's takeaway.
Oh, you don't think this crowd right now.
I think it's just the beginning that there's a lot.
Leading to the nothing fighting on to.
Go on to the other side.
Segment of the job here is to switch.
You can find it, and you can't.
I think some that.
Senators, while.
Well, you go over and get this.
What a kick that elbow up, the other side got the pressure down to the right spot.
Didn't work.
Centrelink is out.
That's the danger of it, of course, you know, you either put him money back or he gets out, all right, he's right where he wants to be anyway.
If he got him on his back, that's that's bonus because this is where her office left.
The Russell family are on his feet.
Salinger is tough and tough and.
He said he was the center on the Iowa football team that went to the Rose Bowl, a starting center.
He's six and one is preseason.
So far, Iraq was in on the league again.
You're right there, but he didn't take him out of position.
So here's the was back.
And the crowd and the Coliseum is beginning to.
They got the feeling.
He's a cheerleader now.
There's the end of the first period.
And it's.
Acropolis over somewhere simply gets his choice if he wants to go down.
You know, lots of bars got right here, watch him come off the block to me, right, right on through takes him down.
Great technique.
Great technique.
Oh, the crowd is up again, but a lot of excitement here, and we're happy to bring it to you on our 10th anniversary season of college wrestling and what a finish and how this plays out.
That's right.
Salinger is dangerous.
These are heady.
If he's got the cradle, Bruce Banner in a cradle.
And this is what can happen as much as hips are too high.
Now he gets them off to the side, Bosa hands they.
He's got to get droplets broken down on the other side.
There's got to take that outside knee away from him.
And there's a lot of time left in the second period.
A lot of time, a lot of time settling around in a good position for Iowa on the top, it's a.
16 feet, we're tied at heavyweight.
Some thrilling moments.
Well, he's got him in the same about the same position, no arms locked yet.
But he stays in that between the legs right there, he's got every option to take the whole period away from Somali and maybe turn him over now to keep between the lines.
It could happen because we're in the second period.
It's six to three.
Hiroko with over sending her a good match.
Very good match at heavyweight and it will decide.
This me, because we're tied up round of 16, all.
Iowa State.
Miraculous listening to his coach, Eddie Barnet.
They're telling him what to do next time.
Well, they all have to watch out for that role.
That's the thing they're caught him in the last night in the deep waist it up on a half.
And Dan Gable in Iowa, he hasn't lost to me since two years ago, 36.
He's.
And there was miracle on charge again on top, he flattened, settling her down, takes the arm.
So here he's walking the head again to really make this work effectively, he's got to scoop the head in underneath him.
He's got the arm out there, but it has to be able to scoop the head with the need.
Right here you see him start to take the knee.
Now he's got bill to scoop the head in and then walk.
But at the end of the second period, her the lost by three, now her office will get his choice and he's going to start on the bottom.
He's going to start on the bottom.
Let's see what's in the heart to do.
Mark is going to have to do something here on top.
He's not able to hold her office down.
And he.
Here's where her office's low level attack is going to be to his advantage silicon only win with a throw right now, droplets of shit that go back to that low level attack.
Take out rage.
A chance to win like that.
Good luck with that.
Iowa and Iowa State, I know some people from Sports Illustrated are here this week and they saw a thriller.
I suppose they're taking a chance.
Coming up, why?
It all for Sports Illustrated head mark, throw on top the top headlock by Salinger.
Waking up in.
Just to his advantage.
Just take the low level.
That's what he does best.
There it is again.
Salinger got a really.
That's what John Roberts does so well for Iowa, since he does not lose possession when he hits the outside of town.
That's what makes him, that's what makes him dangerous to.
A minute, two seconds to go.
seven, two, three, miraculously, let's set it up again at 16 all Iowa State 16, Iowa 16 number one team against the number two in the Old Coliseum, a rematch of state power.
And as her off, all of them heavyweight against settling her, don't go away after the meet, we'll tell you how it happened.
We'll show you a lot of what else is going on.
Acropolis made the shot, settling our needs, a throw it up in.
I don't think he's going to get it at all.
That's 30 seconds anyway, but look.
Blocking us from making the shots.
He's got good position.
It's beginning to look.
What about our health policy in?
They got the Iowa State coach, Jim Gibbons, up on his honor in all the Iowa State coaches.
They are getting a ride.
Well, are you glad you showed up or not?
I see Iowa State President Robert Parks is out on the map.
He's a wrestling fan and he's coming out to shake the coach's hand to.
Maybe you'll get a shot of him.
There is.
He's a big wrestling fan, and he been talking with his old coach.
The only sad thing for Iowa State is the possible condition of Jasmine's knee.
That's right, and I'm looking for him.
He's limping around and we're hoping that his injury against chip rally is not serious.
Well, we're going to try to get Jim Gibbons out here in just a minute.
See if you can line up the boss here at this young Iowa state team that just upset the Iowa Hawkeyes 19 to 16.
If you just tuned in to get Jim down off the ceiling first, well, let's see.
Here's how it happened.
The 118 pound match went to Perry Summit, a fall he pinned Matt Egeland that really started it all out for Iowa State.
And Kelly made it nine to nothing with a five to two win over Penrith.
We may cut away here for any time.
We got this interview lined up.
There is.
There is Gibbons.
He's shaking hands with and getting a big hug from Dave Cox to see what he looked at at the end of the hour.
At the end of the match end of the Meet Givens.
That's what he used to do when he won the championships and up until the shoulders he goes of his brother, Joe and Mike Manners Dale.
The victorious cyclone team, well, we'll finish up what the rundown was on that on the matches tonight after we talked with Jim Gibbons.
Chuck.
Coach Gibbons biggest win first time.
Well, I think it's a good thing for college wrestling.
I really do.
I think our guys at the beginning, the season, we told them that if they went out there and wrestling as hard as they could, they do something great for college wrestling and they've just done that right now .
They sure did.
And you had a great crowd here.
They really got with it all they did.
They were fantastic.
The students really got behind us and made these people back here that the general public, and it was just a fantastic experience.
Yeah.
And I know that you were kind of a cheerleader there, nor there that really got them going to.
Well, I find myself in that position.
Sometimes you're pretty helpless.
You know that feeling?
Yes, I do.
Well, kids really did an outstanding job today.
Yeah, they did.
They went out there, wrestle their hearts out, and we told you to give you a better match and got them.
We want it.
Well, I think I'll tell you, I really have a lot of admiration for you been able to get the coaching staff together and get the squad going.
A new spirit at Iowa State.
Have you got the best assistant coaches in the country?
Let me tell you that right now and we got a great group of kids, we've expanded our nucleus.
Michael talked about early in the season, and it's been a fantastic experience.
Well, good luck to you next week in a big then come on out of the national tournament.
We're definitely looking forward to this would be a good confidence builder for us We know I'll be back.
They've got a great program.
And Dan Gable's fantastic coach.
Well, good luck to you, coach.
Thanks a lot for the interview.
Jim Gibbons, the victorious coach of the Iowa State Cyclones 19 to 16.
Before we get out of here, I'll run down, though what happened tonight?
But we've come to the end of our 10th anniversary season of college wrestling on Iowa Public Television, and we hope you've enjoyed our coverage and will remember us with your support this March when Festival 86 rolls around.
And now, as it's our custom Iowa Public Television sports, we'd like to share our impressions of College Wrestling 1986 with you right now.
And that videotape piece was produced by Clay Smith of our staff.
But the memories of this wrestling year really could be wrapped up in that score, you see right on the board 19 to 16, the first win by Iowa State over Iowa for five years.
Well, that guy riding high right there.
He'll be riding high for quite a while, I'm sure.
Very quickly.
Let's let's say what happened here.
Iowa State got a pin from Summit over Eagle, and that was a big match at 1:18.
Kelly, we kind of saw that coming, though, you know?
Yeah, yeah.
Kelly beat Penrith and also other decisions were scored by Iowa State's Kreeger Heat beat number one ranked Jim Heffernan.
Bill Tait a big match major decision over Alger.
Who would have thought, I think Tate did that was he wrestled like it, didn't he and Harrop Plus at heavyweight when it was tied 16 all got the win that he had to win.
Now, Iowa had some big wins to Randall, beat Gibbons, Dresser beat Joe Gibbons.
There was a loss of a number one man, big match, big match for him coming out, especially off that last loss.
Now he's probably right in himself.
And the Hawks won three in a row through the middle and that didn't stop until you got to heavyweight Kistler 221 over man hours.
Dale Borelli beat Gassman on a major decision and Goldman beat Volcker was back on a major decision, too.
I think they I think they gave away a little bit too much right there.
In the beginning.
That first match was critical and it turned out to come back to haunt them.
Oh yeah.
Well, anyway, it's a lot of fun.
You know, those are the kinds of things that we think makes wrestling a lot of fun.
And Chuck Patton, here I there is a place you can write if you'd like to say something about our coverage, criticism or a comment.
College wrestling that's box 1758 in the mind.
Zip Code 50306.
Now we also want to talk about C.P here, because this man, Chuck Patton, you and I coach for so many years has been coming back from Washington, near Seattle and Everett, Washington to do these meets with us, and you're not probably going to be here this next year, and I don't know what we're going to do.
Well, I need to take a little bit time to raise my daughter.
I have a 16 year old out there with me and I leave her all the time.
So well, you're a great to have around.
It's been a lot of fun being here and I certainly have appreciate it, and I hope that the fans have enjoyed the analysis attempt that I made to try to explain wrestling and make it so that they know what the guys are trying to do, how well it doesn't come any better.
There's no doubt about it.
Well, also, we want to say thanks to of the many individuals at these universities who helped us this year have been tremendous assistance Athletic Director of Sports Information Personnel, coaches, facilities managers.
We can't name them all individually because there are so many, but please accept our sincere gratitude for a job well done one and all.
Now we're going to roll up these closing credits here in just a minute, and we will give you a chance to see some of the people behind the scenes.
