- [Alessandra] The San Diego region is home to many artists who work in a variety of media.

As a curator, an educator, I want to know what inspires these creatives.

This is "Insights Into Art."

I feel transported.

- So welcome to The Garden.

(upbeat music) - Essentially, it was about building community.

Who am I within this community?

- I like to imagine that I'm having long conversations with my characters, and the long I work with them, I understand them better.

- Mending is such a beautiful word, isn't it?

(upbeat music) - No one leaves their land without struggle.

(upbeat music) - It reminds me of like being a little kid and this kind of sense of wonder that we lose sometimes as we become adults.

- [Maggie] Being curious about things and ask question about what I see and how I feel.

- It's all in the interest of learning more about the pattern and perhaps coming up with a new pattern, which I have come up with new patterns based on old patterns.

(machine whirring) - This is typical for making a rug, but I make mixed media artworks with it.

- Even though I like to explore the shadowy part, you know, of humanity, always with a positive outcome because I think that's what we need right now.

- [John] Part of it is like an exploration and sort of discovery, right?

You don't even know what you wanna do until you did it and you go, "Ah, it looks cool."
