And we just had a really successful first year, and we've been doing it ever since.
I really thought our team would like it.
Just kind of the intimacy, of the small high school gym packed everybody in there while sitting on top of each other right away from day one.
It was, in fact, it's an annual northwest Iowa tradition.
Iowa State men's wrestling coach Kevin Dresser cyclones face off against an opponent in their coach's hometown this year.
Big 12 conference affiliate foe, the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
Hop into the fray next on Iowa PBS.

It's college wrestling from humble, Iowa.
It's a big 12 men's matchup in the high school gym as the South Dakota State Jackrabbits take on the Iowa State Cyclones.
Hello everyone.
I'm Tim Johnson, along with my broadcast partner, ten time national champion coach and Hall of Famer Jim Miller.
And Jim, we've got a good one to go.
Oh man.
What a great environment in a man atmosphere.
It's going to be fun.
Both teams are coming off wins Friday night so they're hot.
They're ready to go.
And they come into this.
Oh it's the cyclones only having one loss this year against number two Ohio State.
But nothing can take away from the spark that ignited the cyclones season.
Iowa State got the ball rolling early defeating arch rival Iowa in Ames, their first win over the Hawkeyes since 2004 to beat, Iowa on a Sunday and then fly to Las Vegas the following Wednesday and win in Las Vegas on Friday and Saturday.
Was a pretty incredible six day stretch.
So, we've got a talented bunch of guys and, you know, they were excited for both those opportunities.
So a great way to start.
But that win at the Cliff Keane Invitational in Las Vegas was the cyclones second win there in the last three seasons.
And Jim, let's take a look at today's matchups.
What do you think?
Well, we got some good really good matchups.
I really looking forward to number, one and 197, especially Elam and Berkey to top six ranked in the nation.
But we're going to have some fireworks here starting right away.
Walk into deep pool in 28.
We've got the matchup between Brady Rourke and Stevie Stevo Poulin coming from North.
Northern Colorado transfer returning All-American last year.
Stevo pullin grew up outside Albany, New York, and boy did he leave a mark wrestling as a youngster.
His dad posted these videos when Stevo was eight years old and they went viral.
Maybe you remember I do.
I seen some of these moves.
And of course the Mohawk is a legend.
Great.
And so that was super impressive spread against the Denver.
All right, here we go.
100 and 125 pounds Brady Rourke, the redshirt sophomore out of Seneca, Missouri.
He's a Fargo All-American.
He's going up against Stevo Pullin out of Ballston Lake, New York.
He both started at North Carolina State and transferred to northern Colorado, going to spend his last year here at Iowa State.
Brady works been paying his dues.
He was behind Tanner Jordan.
It's his turn Jim.
Yes it is an eight.
He's a four time finalist, three time state champ.
So he he's really taken advantage of, his opportunity.
He's looking for something big hopefully for him tonight.
But Stevo pulling returning All-American.
And obviously Iowa State wants to get off to a good start.
There's a coaching staff led by hometown boy Kevin Dresser.
We're at Humboldt High School where Kevin was a two time state champion, a member of the Hall of Fame, the wrestling Hall of Fame and Humboldt High School.
There's Stevie pulling in on a good single, comes to his feet real fast.
Nice shot by pullin.
Ready to trip and he does.
Beautiful job.
33. takedown.
Great execution by pullin.
Gets to a fast start.
That's what Kevin Dress was looking for.
But they got somewhat of a slow start Friday night.
They shut out Northern Colorado Friday night.
Both teams coming off wins.
Neutral neutral.
You seen pullin when he got that leg up he didn't hesitate.
He just went to the straight finish got a quick finish.
And that's a key.
And here he is back in now a high crotch cushion cuts off to the double.
Just got a drive through.
Rourke doing a good job trying to stave off by locking up in the crotch there.
And.
But Poulin trying to step through the legs and come back for a crossface there.
He's close to.
Rourke had pretty good recovery there.
Got now got his base hands still locked up.
Think we'll get a stalemate here.
Official Craig Blake out of a Cleveland area Kent Ohio is ahead.
Official Jacob free us out of Milwaukee is the site official.
A big 12 rivalry here.
South Dakota State, an affiliate member as a wrestling program in the big 12.
That was a good job by Rourke holding off.
And that second takedown, which looked like, pullin was going to get now doing his own hand fighting staying in there tough.
And you want to go through that first period.
And if you could be 3 to 1.
And Rourke after that fast start by pullin, you'd feel pretty good.
Darn right.
What a great environment we got here to man.
It's just old school there.
He's got a seat.
It's all standing room only in there about three deep up against the wall.
It is tremendous.
Humboldt held their conference championship.
This, yesterday here in this same gym.
What a conference has been over the years or so.
It's a conference.
Why the North Central Conference?
When?
When I was in high school.
That was the, that was the conference setting.
A great.
That's a good look at Damien Hohn, the two time national champion out of Minnesota in his eighth year as the head coach for South Dakota State.
He's a builder, a builder of programs, a builder of facilities.
They've got a several multi-million dollar facility that Damien Hohn led the charge and, and got for his wrestling program and, well, ruling out.
Yeah, pulling up and out.
Rourke didn't want to let him go, but, he had to let him go after a while.
On your feet because you want to avoid the stall call.
For 4 to 1.
Both wrestlers doing a nice job of active there.
Being very active.
Rourke did get in the first time, and now he's got him upside down.
Pulling in the waterfall position there.
What's Rourke got to do Jim.
Well I think I think he's kind of stuck right here.
And pulling now trying to sit around to get his advantage.
But work doing a good job getting that get getting the leg up top.
Now he's right back in.
But we'll see.
Anybody can get an advantage.
I think we're going to hit another stalemate here.
Brady Rourke he has a decent decision over Jory Boak in his career.
The All-American at was at Wyoming and now is the Gophers starting 125 pounder.
He could scrap.
He's scrapping and he is really scrapping it now.
Man.
These guys are taking turns taking over the advantage.
But no one, can get get the, enough to get the takedown.
Stalemate.
Neutral.
Good stalemate there.
34 seconds left.
Second period.
Obviously a, 100% Partizan crowd.
The Iowa State Cyclones.
A lot of the faithful.
They don't get to get down to Ames.
They're from all over this, this country up here, North Central Conference, the Eagle groves, the, Clarens, the Iowa Falls, the Webster Cities, Fort Dodge, just right down the road, of course, I stopped in the gas station here when I got in town.
Get some gas and the first thing.
Are you here for the wrestling?
Me?
Hey, we're coming in a couple of hours early to get their spot because, you weren't going to be late.
There's no more tickets to be sold.
It's sold out.
Packed crowd here in the Humboldt High School gymnasium.
We go to third period three.
Like bottom position goes down, down 4 to 1.
Putin's really tough on top.
He is made a living.
You know, getting those extra points of writing time off and men likes to tilt and be tough on top.
So this would be really important for Rourke to, get out as quick as he can.
That would be a big win for him.
It's a little battles.
It's it's it's the battles inside the battle.
All right Jim no doubt about it man.
And so here's a battle right now.
Can I control hands and get up and of course pull saying I'm going to control his wrist and keep him down.
Right now he's got 35 seconds riding time.
And, you know, that's, the first point.
He's trying to get to the minute riding time has that ankle clipped back there with a lot of pressure forward.
Yeah.
And look at all the pressure he's putting on Rourke.
Really making it hard to get to his feet here.
He finally gets up 55 seconds riding time.
Oh.
He gets to the minute neutral one on one riding time hangs on to get that riding time.
Now it's, 5 to 2.
If it was to end like this, the riding time point would be.
But, a takedown by Rourke would, basically put him in the lead, put him in the lead, take up a few of this.
So Rourke right in this match, both these guys scrap and great way to start this weight here in Humboldt Iowa.
Yeah Rourke freed one nice shot by pulling again.
Work is kind of like this.
Keeping it close with good guys and giving himself a chance to pull it out of to you.
Gotta love Cullen's aggressiveness from the start.
And his defense right there was a nice shot into the leg.
Probably going to get another stalemate.
But work trying to work around.
He basically took off 20s from the clock there.
28 seconds left and you have a stall warning now.
We'll see if Rourke takes it.
Goes after it.
Here.
Pulling with no stall warning.
So he's just got to be real smart here, Jim.
Yeah for sure.
Just kind of play in there.
Circle in two.
Tough 125 pounders a great way to start this meet if Pullen can hang on.
Nice job by pullin.
He's looking to try to pull in that leg.
And he's going to hang on.
Good fight there.
At 125, the cyclones put three on the board with a 5 to 2 win by Steve Pullin against Brady.
Walk three zero cyclones over the Jackrabbits after the initial wait.
And the crowd appreciates it.
Next we go to 133 51st for the Jackrabbits.
Still seated and his opponent for the Cyclones of Iowa State.
The third ranked Evan Frost.
And our next match up here, Evan Frost, going up against an Iowan Kale Seton out of Iowa City High, a redshirt freshman.
City High and Iowa City, Iowa hard nosed wrestler, two time champ.
But he's got a big challenge.
Frost has been to this event in Humboldt before, and we talked to him in Ames a little over a month ago about it.
Humboldt, specifically, we do, I think, a really good job or should I say the fans do a really good job of kind of going in there and, you know, making a really, really loud, you know, we got the flames going.
It's just a really, really cool environment that they got going on and in the in the gym over there.
So very exciting to keep going back there every single year.
Fans make it fun.
The fans make it fun.
They make it fun for everyone to make it fun for Jim and I. And we're ready at 133 gym packed with 1500 cyclone friends from the, Humboldt area here.
Evan Frost, All-American from Metairie, Louisiana, finished his high school career at Dowling High School in Des Moines.
He and his twin brothers, who we'll see later.
Jacob Frost at 149, moved into Iowa and went to Dowling there last year and now are in the cyclone lineup going up against kale, Seton had a nice little behind by Frost.
Gotta get him to the mat.
No control, nothing yet.
There it is.
Nice takedown by Frost.
That's the kind of start that Kevin Dresser's looking for from Frost.
He's big man.
You get the Frost motor running.
Yeah.
And it's hard to stop it.
But sometimes I gotta give it a jump start.
He says yeah he's a slow starter sometimes.
Yeah.
So that's a nice start for Evan Frost.
He's had some big wins, had some weight management issues.
And so as we're getting into this crunch time of the year, it's always good when you get your weight under control and you look and you come out like he just did.
Yeah I think when he was younger his weight was a bigger problem than it is now.
I think he's, you know how it is.
You just get more mature and you want to, you know, you feel better.
You rustle better when you feel better.
Simple as that.
Kale Kelsey at a nice tech fall against the Cal Baptist on Friday night.
Speaking of Cal Baptist, we've talked about us losing that program, but we'd certainly like to keep it.
And if the wrestling fraternity out there gets behind it, that's our, that's our intention.
If anybody wants to know how they can help keep Cal Baptist wrestling, go to keep Cebu Wrestlinginc.com.
Yeah.
One of the few programs in California we don't.
Yeah.
And in California, they, have more participants, and they got a, you know, over 700 wrestling schools.
And they're really a tough state.
So it's hard, hard to take when they decide that they shouldn't because it's about, participation.
You know, it's about opportunity for for young men and women.
And that's what I hate to most when a program and they determine that, a school determines not to keep it.
Like you always say, Tim, America needs wrestling.
America does need wrestling.
The guts, the gumption, the grit that it takes to grind out a good seven minutes matches the same stuff, the same characteristics that it takes to grind out a good, productive life.
And and, boy, we need it more than ever in America today.
Stalling on, On Evan, on Evan Frost.
Yeah, both of them have a stall call now.
Right.
Cover.
So both with stall calls.
The official Craig Blake saying Dave and you need to work for the fall on top.
And by definition, that's exactly what you're to do.
Always try to turn your man for sure.
Well, seat.
And trying to get to his feet.
He does, but gets put right back down by frost.
Frost puts a lot of pressure on your man.
Just check this out all the way down and he's got two minutes 15 seconds riding time already.
So first period.
Really stretching Seton out there make it hard for him underneath.
Road out after a quick takedown.
Crowd appreciates it.
2.5 minutes of riding.
Time for Frost.
Frosty you guys got to see more out of both of you on top for Evan Frost gets the choice and he is going to take down and begin the second period in this second match at 133 pounds, Tim Johnson along with Jim Miller bringing you College Wrestling on Iowa PBS.
3132.
For us, getting to his feet gets an escape.
Good hustle by Evan Frost getting to his feet as Jim said oh man.
Good footwork.
And then a nice shot right into the single head inside.
Coach loves that you get out.
Don't wait.
Just come right back.
Go get another takedown.
And that's what Frost is working on.
Sharing that leg and now pressuring those hips he comes across covers him.
Three more points.
Goes out front seven zero to the delight of Kevin Dresser.
Made a living here in this gymnasium as a two time state champion.
Went on wrestled for and gable NCAA champion.
Got a lot of champions on that coaching staff there.
Coach Miller yeah they yeah they do.
Brant Metcalf, two time NCAA champion Dan Saint John NCAA champion.
One escape for Seton and Frost working again.
Similar position shelf the leg legal looking to step across.
Gets another one right here.
Close.
And there's three points.
Third takedown and taking it look like he's going hey let's get this technical fall here.
Good.
Here.
He's got some time but he probably needs another takedown this period.
Great.
Nice shot.
And there's one point for Frost.
Another stalling call against Seton.
That's after the warning.
You get one point for the next time.
It's called Frost.
Trying to finish it.
Get the three four seconds left at two when you do it.
That's the way it's drawn up.
You draw it up to score late in the periods on the edge of the mats, and Evan Frost gives it to Ayres next last takedown here all morning.
Rick White was calling for me.
Red.
So here we go.
We got, Satan going down six.
Let's see if Frost just gets rid of him here and gets after back on his feet.
It.
You talk about the assistant coach to Derrick saying John going into the Glen Brown Hall of Fame gable Museum this summer, Metcalf and dresser already in it.
And then just hanging around the rooms.
Three time NCAA champion Nate Carr.
Yeah, yeah.
You go.
Nate's a life coach there.
And of course, continues to, be a major part of the team that he led for so many years, an Olympic bronze medalist.
And, of course, David Carr, who, helped Kevin Dresser, build this program to what it is, is, vying to be the, USA man in 2028, going to Croatia next week.
And I was talking to Nate.
He's going to accompany his son, on that, tournament international tournament.
There's another shot by Evan Frost.
Really?
Really got it going here.
The energy just totally dominate in this match.
17 to 3.
Now one more takedown off.
Be the technical fall.
See.
Oh nice job by Seton.
He's still in there.
Hanging in there wrestling.
For us has been the aggressor the whole match.
And I know dresser.
He's got to really love this from the get go.
Getting Evan Frost pulling the trigger.
Oh nice shot by Frost.
Getting there.
Getting the leg elevated shelf on it.
Coming around.
No control.
Good job, Evan Cross, technical fall.
Good.
State.
Here's Kevin Dresser being awarded his second of two consecutive high school state titles.
At 126 and 132 pounds, respectively.
He then went on to wrestle for Dan Gable at the University of Iowa, where he was 142 pound NCAA champion, two time All-American and Big Ten champion.
Kevin Dresser sends out at 141 pounds.
Carter Pearson from Iowa State.
Normally they have Ketchum, India, one of the Cuban connection, but he won't be there tonight.
He got a little sick.
And so Carter Pearson steps in for him for Iowa State against Julian Pegg tags ranked.
And he deserves it.
And so he's tough yeah he's tough.
Transfer of North Carolina two time Ohio State champion Fargo champion 2007.
He was cadet world team member.
So yeah he's a warrior Ohio.
Senior.
Had a nice come from behind win versus, national qualifier Jesse Vasquez Friday night for Cal Baptist in so he, got it.
He was a little slow starting and got the motor running.
Came from behind and finished strong to get the win.
South Dakota State winning nine out of the ten matches against Cal Baptist and Iowa State, shutting out Northern Colorado and Hilton Coliseum.
On Friday night, Mike Pearson's usually won 33, so I think he moved up with, S mendieta not feeling well.
Southeast pole.
And they got her going southeast.
Polk won the state easily last year, favored to win again three eight this year.
Julian Tag, as you said, was a state champion out of Ohio.
He's actually a two time for Aim Academy and transferred into South Dakota State from University of North Carolina.
His brother Gabriel wrestled at South Dakota State.
So there was a connection there, you know, on this single leg.
Nice little drag.
Yeah, drag.
Single went really smooth.
And now he's just got a finish.
He's he's in great position here.
Just got to move him.
He's got a got to move him.
Looking for the trip.
There it is.
Nice takedown Julian tag.
Now take one of those guys.
Nobody in the country can look past.
He's he's you know he's testy.
He's he's tough.
He has some good wins over ranked wrestlers.
And, he's just one that's going to be in there.
And it's nothing free when you wrestle Julian tag.
Oh, that's exactly it.
I had to written down don't sleep on Julian tag.
And true.
Tag first on the board for the Jackrabbits.
Look at this crowd TJ.
Standing room only at the doors, man.
Yeah, they're they're, you know, kind of peeking in from the, the hallway there.
I don't know whether they're peeking in because they can't get in or because they don't want to get too far away from the popcorn.
You know, you and I had it is, you know, Shane Sparks, told me that he has done this, and it's the best popcorn he's ever had.
So we went out and did pretty darn good.
What it was.
It's, great atmosphere here at Humboldt High School.
And they're sitting in the aisles, sitting on top of each other, almost.
First book I ever read about gable heading in.
It was Got to Gable by, Mike Chapman.
And, of course we're going to we're going to see more.
We got some features.
Frank Gotch that's that's where it all started here early in.
Yeah.
Tribute trophy in this, our, statue.
Statue by the river and humble and I it's a huge statue too.
And we feature we feature him in the Dan Gable Museum as well.
Pioneer for the state of Iowa.
Man.
He was a real known worldwide, worldwide, worldwide.
And, you know, back in my day, I mean, these guys were, in your day.
Well, Humboldt won a state championship.
They got the banner up there in 1968.
Keith Havens.
He's a three time state champion.
Jeff Michaelson, heavyweight state champion that year.
Lyle Laird, three state champions.
Jeff Michaelson just got inducted into the Football Hall of Fame at Iowa.
He was a captain of the Iowa football team back in the day.
And, neutral, of course, Dave Musselman was a three time state champion.
Tony Ursuline, two time state champion, the head coach at Purdue and Purdue's, visited here in December.
Yeah, yeah, I had a guy named Justin Hanson, two time state champion.
Wartburg won a national D-3 title.
He's in the Hall of Fame.
Here's a neat Hall of Fame that they have started.
Coach Chad Beeman and the administration making sure that happens.
There's an attack by Pearson on highway that comes with that legal and legal daily tag.
Really making it hard on him?
No, I mean, he's going to probably squirm a little bit as a coach watching that knee, how it gets twisted.
But the tags coming in to the advantage here, he can stay in bounds and maybe even hook up a cradle.
Steps over that leg trying to find and line.
Now is if I go to the crossface here, get that arm off the leg.
You know there's he's cradle possibly but good job by Pearson.
He felt that coming out in front.
They'll make you throw 12 seconds left second period I mean if you do, you need a tag.
We need a big win here.
You know, just saw Chris Perry in the background.
There's a couple more state champ, our national championships on the Iowa State staff.
And, Chris Perry won a couple at Oklahoma State.
And they're stacked with national champions.
Man.
Red Joyce, third.
Tulane.
Tag him.
Runs hit four to nothing.
But, he's not that far away.
You know, he's 21 seconds from, writing time.
And I'm sure he'll get back on his feet here.
Redshirt recover.
Tag out for two zero.
Plenty of riding time coming up, but about 10s away from securing another point.
Third period and a 45 left here in the third match.
141 pounds and cyclones out to an eight zero lead with a nice win by Steve Pullin and then a tech fall three one by Evan Frost of coaches telling him to give cutting.
It's basically 5 to 1 here.
Nice shot Julian tag hey here's a head throw.
It's gotta get his right arm out.
He does.
Here's the takedown now.
7 to 1 8 to 1 with writing time is another takedown or a turn.
He does have that bottom leg trapped it.
Now he does it.
He's off.
It's going to have to cut him.
There he goes on 55 seconds left.
Escape on the bounce back in.
Another takedown with secure.
The major decision.
Nice job.
Beautiful.
Take double straight double man.
That's.
Can you show on the, videos?
Yeah.
Straight in their head in this German sternum.
He wants to do it again.
Three.
Oh.
Improve to give him takedown for asking.
Here's he still has the major with riding time.
Oh, wow.
Tag is on fire here.
Nice.
Dug down to what he did Friday night.
He, started slow, and then he just turned it on in the third period with a flurry of, points, which he is doing right now.
Julian tag going to get, jackrabbits on the on the board here.
And, nice.
Victory 14 to 3 with riding time.
Julian Pegg, the jack rabbit out of the Ohio senior gets a nice win here in this great environment.
Wrestling for the simulator.
After being hired in 2017, Iowa State coach Kevin Dresser started working on having a dual in his hometown in December 2021.
The first one was held here.
Delayed a year by Covid, the cyclones beat their first opponent, Purdue, whose coach, Tony Ursuline, is another Humboldt native.
His junior year, Tony built in a nice program at Purdue Ladies.
He put on a couple of finalists in the last three years with Ramos and Blaze Humboldt.
Very, very proud.
Wrestling tradition.
Here come Jacob Frost, twin brother of Evan Junior at 149 pound, ranked sixth out of Metairie, Louisiana.
Colin Duke Pierce, redshirt sophomore, stepping in from Greenville, Tennessee.
I guess you feel for the Jackrabbits.
He's got an interesting, bio, too, for time for state titles.
Two in Virginia, two in Tennessee.
Coming up.
We'll see if, Jacob was, inspired by his brother's fast start when he got in with that quick takedown early on, rode out for a couple of minutes the entire first period after the first takedown.
This is Jacob All-American last year.
And he's just all around every position.
He's really pretty dang good.
Really good.
Gas tank.
Unless you don't want your little brother or your brother out doing it right.
No.
Are on your side for all right now.
Neither of us having been twins.
You really don't know what that feels like.
But it's got to be.
It's.
It's got to be so much fun in so many ways.
Jacob Frost taking some shots.
But the field doing a good job.
Yeah.
It's not letting him past his, his hands.
They're good.
Good pressure from Frost digging in for that underhook under field with an underhook.
Controlling Frost's wrist.
There.
Good fight by day.
Pill.
Senior and.
There's nice to the left.
Nice little swing.
Single.
Good.
Fake.
And then hit.
Just hits it.
Here he is coming up.
And like if you're he's young and if you're learning wrestling, this is exactly what you want to do.
You don't want to sit still when you in on a leg is keep building.
Had a lot of options there.
I mean, as long as he came to his feet.
Right, Jack?
Right.
Came up.
He could have cut across.
He could have done a lot of things.
And, so it's all because he kept moving, like you pointed out, coach.
And then you get on top.
And just now I'm controlling that tone.
The wrist.
Oh.
You're looking.
There's 25 seconds left in the period.
You don't.
You want to end up on top.
After a takedown.
A lot of pressure there.
You can tell when he can't get off your belly.
Good period.
3 to 0.
Spread to legs.
Bottom position.
Second period.
Wrestlers.
I need more action than we had in those last 30s.
Damian Hahn, Cody Caldwell two hands.
Right.
Your viewing left.
Cody Caldwell I get I get an opportunity every year to talk about Morning Sun.
Now why am I talking about mornings in Iowa with Cody Caldwell?
Because his grandfather, Bill, was my coach, golf coach and teacher in high school.
And then, of course, Cody's dad.
Rick.
What a program waiver program.
Rick Caldwell and Cody, three time state champion.
And in the state of Iowa.
And Rick is dad, I don't know, eight nine state titles and Waverly Show, right?
Yeah.
Longest tenured coach on the South Dakota State, team came here.
Yeah.
He came a year before, Damian Horn, Damian hantz, the value of keeping Cody.
And it's been a nice marriage ever since.
But the Caldwell, family heritage for wrestling.
One that's known throughout the Midwest.
Jacob Frost, another go behind.
Take down now up seven zero.
40s riding time and building.
Oh, and he he wants some back points here.
In through.
Oh.
Keeps the armbar.
Looking to run it whether he gets it or not man.
He's taking it out of That is hard on the field man.
There's a lot of energy spent underneath not going over.
The crowd and knowledgeable crowd here obviously as we said warning.
I got to give a shout out from mission.
I see some Algona people out in the stands.
I didn't say outgoing.
And so my cousin Jamie Limbaugh, bronze, that's her outgoing name.
And, she texted me and said, don't forget Algona.
You can't forget outgoing when it comes to the North Central Conference.
So shout out to all these traditionally proud and tough programs.
Yeah, these towns around here and right now Clarion is a team.
Yes.
Very good team.
I think top ranked team.
And today they got her going.
Right now I was watching part of that conference tournament yesterday.
And you're right Larry how's it going.
There's sort of a top seven frost out in front going into the third period.
Thank you.
All right.
We're gonna cover optional start green.
Wait for me.
Red.
So, Jacob Frost, Jacob Frost, my my bad.
Basically great to nothing with writing time.
Basically a major.
But he wants to cut him right away and get going.
And when you get these frost kids, when they're on, when they are in and going, they're dangerous.
That's what coach said.
We mentioned that the Frost motor, it's hard to stop.
And now he's got that handle that can go in the feeder.
Now going in on that shot.
You get to the left up to his feet really fast.
That was and was looking for the trip pulling him on.
Got some really savvy here.
Limp arms out and there's a takedown really nice there I mean so many wrestlers at all levels get caught after they get a good shot in, but they don't finish, get to their feet as fast as as Jacob.
Jacob Frost having fun right now.
Just let him go.
I'm going to do it again.
Man, that was good.
That was a good time getting that single.
Now, he shoots, I shoot, I score, he shoots, I score mentality.
Well, in fact, you you and I were talking about that and that's, Jesse Mendez from Ohio State that no kid.
Of course, that's a Dan Gable quote.
But, man, every year you get different guys that you love to watch and no matter who shoots, they got a chance to score.
And right here it's Jacob Frost.
No control.
No control.
You talked about a man that, Kevin Dresser has a lot of respect for.
So much of this wouldn't even be happening except for Dan Gable.
Because you are the director.
There's another taking another take down 13 to 2, and he lets him go again, 13 to 3.
But like I said, Jacob Frost having fun.
He's not stalling it out.
He wants another takedown.
That's what you love to see.
And that's what fans come to watch.
Well and he's wrestling like he's in the middle of the man right there.
You know they're on the edge.
He doesn't care.
He's going to pull it back in.
Oh that's savvy right there.
Right now crowd loves it Jacob Frost wish more time was here.
He's going to run out of time.
But bring it out.
He just having fun.
Four seconds left 16 to 317 with riding.
Riding time one short of the, tech fall.
And he wants another.
He wants four seconds.
He wants another takedown.
Here we go.
It's that.
Wait for me to come in.
Left back.
One run.
Right.
Really nice man.
Stroke of frost.
Good energy from the start.
18 to 4 for.
And ladies and gentlemen, your winner for 40.
Jim Ross.

PBS Congress recently cut 3.5 million in federal funding, the largest one time cut in our 55 year history.
History.
In fact, the 18% of our budget.
Despite this challenge, we remain committed to our mission.
Thank you for supporting public media.
And thank you, Iowa PBS for remaining supportive of college wrestling.
Get ready now for 157 pounds.
He knocked a born going against Kale Swenson.
Kale Swenson, one of the Jackrabbits best, most seasoned wrestler, awaits redshirt junior Cain stepping in for Vinny Urban, who has not got an easy little tweaked up.
And, as far as an injury, nothing serious, but just can't go today.
And, so knock to burden.
Byron is in the state champion for Linn Ma going up against the Jackrabbits.
157 pounder Kale Swenson, two time national qualifier.
Four time place winner was Zeta High School, Minnesota two time champion, runner up in Junior Greco.
But he's from work on the Minnesota.
Yeah.
Why is there a high school one of the powerhouses over the years.
And, let's make sure you said it.
Two time national qualifier medical redshirt last year.
And a big opportunity for Cain knocked aboard getting the chance to come out.
Wrestled from a really great in a great environment against a really quality opponent.
Cain's got a brother Tate, who's on the Iowa State team, 84 pounder, who's had some, had a surgery this year.
See actually actually TJ, Eric and Tina active Barnes mom and dad.
I had him in class at Warburg.
No, outdoor recreation was their last class of their best.
I keep telling me that's the best class on camp, man.
I love that class.
It's tough.
And here's the recap.
As we talked, Steve Pullen came out and had a hard fought good win at 125.
Then Evan Frost with a tech fall over Seton.
Julian Tag puts the Jackrabbits on the board with a major decision.
And Jacob Frost really nice.
Major decision over to pill.
Nice shot by Swenson.
Actor born locked chest rap.
Trying to stave him off against.
Really good job of so far.
Swenson in on now upside down watching figure four as well.
He's true.
Stalemate called break.
You know we talk about Kale Swenson being seasoned and you talk about you know teaching his mom and dad.
I suppose that's the category you and I are in season with the season.
Announcers, real season in the wrestling community.
And so that's a nice I like that.
You see any old man?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Something.
You know there's something to be in season.
Kale Swenson has been in a lot of battles.
He's won some.
He's won a lot of battles.
And in the past actually has beaten reserve in a couple of times in the past.
He beats urban and the NCAA.
He's keep all the time.
In two years ago.
And so it would have been fun to see the rematch.
But not possible today.
But I'm sure they will big both big in the big 12 tournament coming up there's a nice shot by Swenson looking to complete it.
He's got to get that thigh loose.
Back to Bourne trying to hold on.
But guys good job by Swenson.
They call it bro.
Good action by Swenson jumped in there lowered his level.
Mat return mat return.
Okay.
Have to go right back up to his feet for a big escape.
If he could get it so great.
Big 21 seconds here in the first period.
Right out or escape.
So important.
And from both positions to get the escape here is, would be big for NOC.
The Bourne that recover.
Nothing yet.
He green one, green one.
And it is a ride out for the first period.
Really tough ride out by Swenson.
40s riding time.
Your choice.
Green.
Swenson goes down.
Green flag.
Bottom position.
All right, keep our hands and ties legal, guys.
Both guys keep away.
Wait for me, red.
There's a look at, Kevin Dresser again.
Successful everywhere he's been.
You know, he was a successful high school coach, Grundy High School in Virginia.
And then Christian Christiansburg High School, 30 years in Virginia.
He was the head coach at Virginia Tech before he came to Iowa State.
11 years at Virginia Tech, 30 years in Virginia, Hall of Famer out in Virginia.
Everybody knows who Kevin Dresser is because of his success.
He had a ton of state high school titles, brought home a trophy for Virginia Tech.
It's tough right here so far.
Actor born.
It's getting high.
Press.
Yeah.
Crowd appreciating a, The ride there got.
He wasn't.
I'm scared to take a little risk.
Got a little high but settled back in talking about.
Knocked the barn on top and through knocking down one at riding time and building his own.
Read one, read two.
It can be an equalizer.
And I tell you, if you're good.
Yeah, if you're good on top.
Makes such a difference.
Keeping you in the match or giving you a chance to, you know, snag some back points.
But man, he's riding tough now.
He's got almost 50s riding time.
And Swenson has not even really been close to getting out is has not got to his feet at all.
And.
Tim you know that's a big write off and active.
Warren's going to be 10s left.
Confidence builder and kept him in the match.
Going to get an opportunity for his choice.
Crowd going to appreciate this right now to get to where are we going right going bottom got Casper right celebrity PA announcer.
Out Des Moines got one of the premier PA announcers in the wrestling community.
Got recovered on the mic in the gym this afternoon.
And I got to fight back.
Back to Bourne.
Up to his feet.
He had big escape here and through.
Didn't quite get out.
And now, Swenson does have the riding time.
Under a minute on the belly button.
I watch your tight waist.
Right, right.
Set free cover.
Read one.
Active one.
Reaching around for Whizzer Green.
Ankle run.
Stay legal.
Still in control.
Look for lock.
They're all tied up in here.
I think we're going to get a stalemate.
Control or a stall call on Swenson.
As always, we.
Stop right there.
Stop running.
Guy writing time is stopped for Swenson.
Double called.
Greg.
Greg.
Greg.
Greg.
Greg.
Stall warning.
Green.
You got that stall warning.
All right, make sure we don't got a tight race on this card.
Wait for me, Greg.
Here we go.
46 seconds left.
Side three, cover south.
No riding time.
Three riding time will be involved.
They, Swenson cannot get it.
And so.
Good fight.
They knocked a barn.
He's trying.
Good return again by Swenson.
Both these guys so stingy on top is a little Jonesy killed here, but, Swenson.
By the way, loose legal improve in three, 31323334.
Over every still green.
Go green.
Nothing yet.
And it's going to end up like this.
Green.
Yeah.
He's got to get that left leg hooked inside.
And he wasn't able to do it.
Swenson.
A we're gonna do a three, 46 to green.
Follow me.
Nice win by the jackrabbit.
He's coming.
They get their second win of the night.
Three more points on the board.
12 seven.
As we get ready to go to break it going to break.
We have some halftime features.
The score 12 to 7.
Iowa State leading will be back after, this one.
More wrestling to come from humble high school gym.
This one is.
Off now back to you doc.
You're watching the state championship from a young age.
You know, starting to wrestle.
When I was six years old and humble, I took to it right away.
It was something that I really enjoyed and didn't mind the work.
Iowa State coach Kevin Dresser grew up watching Boys State wrestling coverage, then won back to back titles in high school in Des Moines.
It's very electric.
I thought right then and there I'm like, I'm going to do whatever it takes to get down on that mat before I graduate.
Humbled high school.
There's a lot of kids that had very, very similar thoughts in their head right now.
Humboldt can tout another contender inspired by his predecessors.
I haven't been from humble.
That kind of pushes me towards Iowa State then.
Yeah, having a duel here is awesome.
You get to see the guys that I mean, you can be teammates with.
Junior Brody Hendricks has racked up over 100 career match victories and already medal twice at the state tournament.
Coach dresser, when he's recruiting guys, he really wants to find out if they truly love wrestling.
Coach Chad Beeman has headed up Humble Boys Wrestling for over two decades in seeking another trip to state.
He says Hendricks makes the grade at the high school level.
We might have 5% of our kids that truly love wrestling, but he's one of those individuals.
The goals are to win a state title this year and next year, and then move on to my collegiate career, whether that's in football or wrestling.
Hendricks has been an integral part of Humboldt's defense, including their three, A state title run in 2024.
Football coach Derek Ellman praises him and other multi-sport contributors.
Last year.
Out of our team that played on the state championship, you know, we had like 16 seniors and of those 16 seniors, I think 13 of them played three or more sports success in one sport is definitely going to bring success in.
And, everything I do is based off of wrestling aggressiveness, using my hands, hips, everything together, tackling.
It's all kind of intertwined.
There's no shortage of athletic talent past and present in the area.
Coach Ellman brought in former Hawkeye and Super Bowl champion Dallas Clark, who graduated high school nearby to help on offense.
There's nothing better than seeing a kid that sees himself as this good, but you see him as this good and they look at your crazy, right?
And then that senior year they become All-State and they're just like, how did that happen?
And you're just like, you know, like what I've been trying to tell you, you know, both football and wrestling have a legacy in Humboldt.
Hendricks may have a big decision ahead, but no matter where or how far he goes.
Homecomings here are sweet for all to be able to connect with the high school, especially my high school.
I think it's great for the sport.
I think it's great for the kids in northwest Iowa.
Growing up there, that was wrestling country.
Jack.
We're back.
We've got more for you here at the break and then more wrestling right after this.
You.
All the great wrestlers of the early part of the 20th century came off farms.
They had the work ethic, the toughness they could pitch.
Hey, all day, maybe wrestling with pigs.
But a lot of them came from Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin.
So people say to me, why does Iowa have this great wrestling culture and far greater than any of the other states?
I said Iowa had Frank Gotch, who grew up on a farm in Humboldt, Iowa, the greatest wrestler, in my estimation, who ever lived.
Author Mike Chapman, a retired award winning Cedar Rapids Gazette sports editor, athlete and creator of college wrestling's Heisman Award, the Dan Hodge Trophy collects Frank Gotch memorabilia and has written several books on the native Iowan, who in 1908 became the first American to seize the title of World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion.
That was actually Cassius catch and wrestling back then.
That was I'll catch any hold I can on you.
You catch any hold you can on me.
There was a lot of elbows to your back, to the side of your head.
There are cross faces.
They take their knuckle and put them in your nose.
It was a very painful activity.
There were three ways you could win by a pin.
The other fellow.
Just saying, I've had enough.
I'm exhausted.
Or you could win with a joint lock submission.
The other wrestlers were very reluctant to go to the mat.
Gotch won 154 matches over his career, losing just six times between 1899 and 1913, then retired in his prime.
His signature move was a step over toehold.
He would wrap his left leg around your right leg, lean his body into it, your foot's trapped and the pain's excruciating.
You have no choice but to tap out once he locks it in.
Frank had a fierce pride.
He wasn't gonna let anybody beat him.
He went the last ten years of his life without losing a single fall.
By the time Frank was ready to return to his farm, he had earned millions of dollars.
Babies had been named in his honor, as had buildings, toys, farm implements, and 100 other things.
He would tour around the Midwest, taking on all comers, never lost on that level, then became champion of America.
And that's what set the stage for his championship match for the world.
This is from April 3rd, 1908.
It's catch us catch can style for the world's wrestling championship.
Frank Gotch was really America's first superstar in any sport.
Baseball was in its infancy.
Football was just barely around.
Gotch was handsome, articulate, and the media loved him.
President Teddy Roosevelt invited him to the white House.
He was going to be one of the first major movie stars ever in the fledgling industry.
There was talk about him running for governor.
He had offers to move to New York City, Chicago, Saint Louis, Omaha, Kansas City.
And Frank was fond of saying, I was born in Iowa.
Farm boy.
I was raised in Iowa, farm boy, and I'll die in Iowa farm boy.
And of course, that endeared him to the state all the more back home.
As fate would have it, Gotch fell mysteriously ill, dying of kidney failure in 1917.
He was just 39 years old.
The day he died.
It was front page news all over America to honor God.
His memory, a state park, was named after him, and his statue was constructed overlooking the Des Moines River and Humboldt, his hometown, where he once drew big crowds.
When training for matches.
Chapman says that kind of fervent fandom is a big reason for the wrestling we know in Iowa today.
Cassius catch can wrestling was just a little bit too brutal for scholastic activities, so you saw some refinements being made.
They wanted to do away with joint lock submissions, put in time limits and referees to make it more acceptable to the public.
It was the popularity of Frank Gotch that caused a lot of high schools and colleges to take up the sport.
What a legacy.
What a legacy.
We're back at Humboldt High School, ready for the second half of what's been an exciting dual meet in this incredible crowd.
That's a look right there at Marcus Espinosa Owens South Dakota State jackrabbit, a redshirt sophomore ranked 26 from woods Cross, Utah, going up against Connor Wooten Junior out of Westerville, Ohio.
And so Conner Hooten stepped in for the cyclones.
Cyclones out in front, 12 seven.
They won three out of the first five.
And now we get going Kim Johnson along with Jim Miller bringing you college wrestling on Iowa PBS, Kevin Dresser's hometown gymnasium.
That, the fifth year that, Kevin has brought the cyclones up to his hometown gymnasium.
First year they had Purdue with Tony Ursuline, the head coach of Purdue, and they've had Wisconsin and Grandview, North Dakota State, and now the Jackrabbits from South Dakota State, led by Damien Hahn.
Damien Hahn done has done a tremendous job at South Dakota State.
There are affiliate members in the big 12.
So a big 12 showdown today Iowa State out in front 12 to 7.
And Espinosa Owens a twin of Moses who you'll see later for the, Jackrabbits.
We had the Evans twins for the cyclones.
And they're zooming in on in on a good shot.
Single comes up with it, tries to snap him down if Espinosa Owens gets still with the whizzer.
And here we go again.
Iowa stays trying to elevate.
Can't stop there.
There he goes.
And that's exactly what happens again.
And they're.
That's not an accident.
Those are you number of Iowa State.
You're seeing the same techniques there.
They don't get.
They don't get caught down in the shin Whizzer because they keep moving.
They shelf the the leg and then out out and got out in front was able to pressure the hips.
Came up on top for an early three point takedown for the cyclones.
Both these guys are hard nosed.
There goes the Russell hard.
Looking forward to this match here.
Been looking forward to it.
But 3 to 0 Oden first period.
Now out of the Columbus Ohio area Westerville North High School pretty conventional wrestler.
Coach dresser says he's really, focused on the fundamentals, has had some injuries he's had to get over and he's starting to hit his stride.
Got a lot hands on, you know, 3 to 1.
Now technically.
So 3 to 1 on that locked hands technical violation.
He's.
Six.
Good job by Espinosa Owens.
And he's out.
Got those elbows in control.
The hands got the escape.
3 to 2.
Now.
South Dakota State has come to scrap.
Iowa State has been throwing a lot of punches.
And, the Jackrabbits have responded.
Winning two of the three are two of the five matches and showing up here.
Nice job.
And nice back.
Yeah.
Good movement by Espinosa.
Owens can tripped up and nice takedown again.
You were talking about the activity that came from footwork activity.
Staying on it.
Kind of rooting out front 6 to 2.
Now.
Check this here it is.
Nice.
He'll pick scramble Owens trying to turn away but you can see just comes up with the leg trips finishes.
Reset.
Read cover.
Three.
Caution.
First sergeant.
First caution.
You get two for free.
The third one.
Garcia, point reset.
Read cover.
Espinosa.
Olson.
Owens trying to get to his feet.
And he does.
Good movement by Owens.
Wow.
Great.
You know, pursuit by Hooten holding.
Just not letting him there.
I'm right in the out.
That's just determination right there.
Great.
Right out.
Kind of made up for that technical violation in the lock hands by not letting him go.
It got three cautions.
Read set neutral.
Start underneath Espinosa.
Owens comes on.
Good job by Hooten.
Right to his feet.
And there's an escape.
Coach Hahn calls Espinosa.
Owens is Sherman.
Tank.
He says he'll keep coming at you.
He'll run over you if he can.
Oh, nice job of controlling the head and dropping back into a re attack counterattack by Espinosa Owens.
Love that.
Looking to pop that head out.
Steps over the ankle.
Yes he does now.
He gets the leg off underneath his head.
He needs to get his head on top, which he does.
Pulls his elbow.
That was a great job.
Now he needs to come back.
And crossface trying to work his way through to the head.
Scott student in trouble.
Just little by little here and there.
It is a lot of ways he could go.
He could get to the, under the danger zone.
Hooten.
Good job not given that up.
And they're gonna end up off the mat.
Wow.
Fight comes to nothing.
There is good work.
Both guys had good work there, but was smooth.
And he avoids the takedown.
I've watched, Damien Ham.
They had a big win over Minnesota earlier.
Big rivalry.
He's back home two time in champion for Minnesota.
And he's just a very encouraging in the corner.
He's very encouraging coach.
And as we talked about it he's built a nice program at South Dakota State.
He would like to have them in a position where they'd be perennial.
Top ten, top 15.
Always in there.
You know, looking to finish in the top echelon of the big 12, he says.
I got along, we got a long ways to go, but that's our, that's our goal.
Yeah, that's a big deal.
When you beat Minnesota and you know that kind of rivalry and it came down to heavyweight, they want a big match at heavyweight Layton.
And there was some celebration going on there with the Jackrabbits.
Well deserved I know you've been in that situation.
But there were some disappointing losses he had early or and a coach could get down.
But it's you know he was right back into the next match and I thought about it as he won at the end, he could have got down because he had a favored mat wrestler loose late.
But he got to just come right back and get after it, don't you.
Do you got to show leadership?
Because if the leader's not thinking we can win, pretty tough to win.
So you got to fake it till you make it.
Is that right?
Sometimes I don't know, maybe you're not.
If you do it enough, you're not faking it.
Yeah, yeah.
You believe?
Yeah.
Read one.
Oh, Espinosa.
Oh.
Nice job.
Gets it, gets the escape.
It's great this you.
Have.
A third period, about a minute and a half left.
Nice shot by Espinosa.
The Thornton.
Big hips.
Big.
Oh, man.
He's got some power just ripped out of that shot.
And now really putting the onus on Espinosa.
Those ones of, you know, he's sitting there down seven, three.
Also here.
Hooten has writing time.
He does really nice job.
I like the effort by Espinosa Owens.
But, he went out and just really feeling that anchors down, down block really effective.
Has, Espinosa on stretched out and we have a stalemate, you know, and a another takedown by Odin.
You know, you're looking at a major decision here, and I he's already got writing time for.
And these guys are both.
Quit shooting.
Nice job.
And on a leg.
Found that on the takedown?
Yeah.
Another takedown.
Got the major decision now for the cyclones.
You'd have been right him out to get it.
Been real workmanlike for corner.
He's had to work hard against Marcus Espinosa.
Owens.
And he's had a lot of success working on a major now like you said.
But there's Espinosa Owens trying to save a point for, on the boundary.
His team, you get a major, it's four.
A regular decision is three goes dresser, 15 second go.
You've done it 100 times in practice, you know.
Now see?
Look what can happen here.
You got time if you go, oh, there's a shot and look like it's going to happen.
Good fight there at the end by Espinosa Owens.
But good win for the cyclones.
Three more points on the board puts the cyclones out front 15 to 7.
It's a good start to the second half.
Yeah when I was.
We talked about Damien Hohn.
Here's a look back to 2003.
South Dakota State coach Damien Hahn wrestled for the Minnesota Golden Gophers and took on the Hawkeyes and Iowa City on statewide Iowa PBS.
Oh, you.
So it was really good.
Oh, man, I love calling.
I was calling that meet.
I was at that meet and there's Damien Hart, right?
Damien Hahn right now.
Now one of the of the cyclones lot solid coaches in Division one and region guys time.
Now we got Moses Espinosa Owens going up against MJ guy con and talk about a scrambler guy con a junior 92 out of Temecula, California going up against the sophomore out of Woods Cross, Utah Moses Espinosa Owens oh yeah, MJ Gaitan.
He's fun to watch.
Look in the pen.
Yes.
Dangerous.
Usually comes out on top in the scrambles, but Espinosa Owens here will put a lot of pressure on him.
He's a he's a go early on when he's focused.
Coach Dresser said guy con he's really good.
Miller.
And good.
Dual win versus Kennedy when they wrestled Iowa City.
Oh, that was a huge win for Iowa in, in Ames.
He was second at the Cliff Keane.
Likes to just get himself in wrestling position.
He feels really good when he's wrestling his way.
And that's, that's a scrambling, chaotic way of wrestling that he seems to find a lot of opponents backs to the mat.
Yeah, I think he has a lot of joy doing just going being free and just being wide open.
Moses having a solid year.
He's got a victory, in his career over Cam Steed from Missouri and All-American.
Had a win over Bo Martin, owner who is highly ranked from Michigan.
He also lost to Mount Mona at the Cliff Keene.
So they split, you know, over the weekend in Las Vegas earlier this year.
Action.
Good scrap here.
They get even.
Better.
Marcus or Moses Espinosa Owens putting some pressure on, you know, keeping the head pressure, staying out on the elbows and and, staying solid, putting pressure on Gaitan.
Under a minute.
Yeah.
We're dead.
Even two minutes in.
The time.
Doing some good fakes.
Change in levels is having pulled the trigger.
Fans are so close here and they get, a little, If one decides to get loud, everybody hears.
It's a tremendous crowd here at Humboldt High School.
What a what a really cool venue.
Cool, cool opportunity.
There's a shot a little, single leg head to the outside.
Looking to try to cut off.
But here is where Guyton Hill will make you pay.
Yeah, he's locking in there.
Makes it hard to get to the double.
Guys are rolling through.
Oh, then.
Oh, man, this is a scrap here.
Espinosa.
Owens trying to get to the double, but time runs out.
Zero zero at the first period.
174 pounds.
Third period.
Crack the bottom to wait for migraine.
25 second period.
Reset green cover.
Little roll out by Guy Kohn for an escape.
First point of the match California.
First on the tour 2020.
Seemed like that's kind of surprised that Espinosa Owens seemed like it was a little easy for Gaitan to come out.
Was sure did.
But look at Gaitan.
He finally takes a shot off.
Off the fake.
Oh, does he get in tight, Jim?
I'll see if he can come up.
Espinosa oh is trying to spin around.
Nice little, get paced over there.
And the crowd who watches the cyclones?
They'd be disappointed if they didn't see, you know, a little chaos like this Jay guy.
Com.
Yeah.
Broke his grip.
Oh, man.
Both these guys, they're not giving up anything.
They.
You say they're.
A good time in on that chest wrap.
Trying to put his knee there so we can try to go right.
Oh.
It's rare.
Good chest wrap pulls him over.
Nothing happening though.
Still neutral.
You know what?
There's a lot of good wrestling going on.
Just not much going.
I was waiting on to see if I could read Coach Dresser's lips there because he wanted Gaston's, attention.
But that comes focused.
Walks back to the mat.
That's one thing, to talk about it at another time, but, you know, the better that the wrestlers are at peeking over at the coach to see if they have something to say this time.
Gets in on the double.
Lifts him upside down, hoot and rolls him through.
All.
He's good here.
Time runs up, time runs out.
Man under him two.
Still nothing.
One zero.
Both wrestlers at the end of matches.
Both of them have had opportunities to have something happen in their favor.
But that time ran out.
Now Espinosa Owens will, start underneath.
Try to even up the score going into third period one zero.
Guyton with that pretty easy escape as he rolled out early in the second period.
Now on top.
As for the rolling Stone, once us.
You got the hands on Owens squares up, gets his escape right back into the shot trying to cut across.
You see the left elbow of, Guy Ty keeping him from cutting off to the double side.
Tyler likes this roll through his situation and he sometimes come up on top and score.
Yeah, we're a danger neutral.
And there it is.
He's good there.
Got the three.
Put a three point takedown out in front 4 to 1 a little over a minute left in a position right here.
Splits the legs.
Not a position that Espinosa Owens wants to be in.
Both wrestlers and crews here both three and.
Oh.
Damien Hunt felt like they should have been a stalemate.
They're both, little start over.
That's what I'd be wishing for if I was in his seat.
Now you got to move.
Espinosa.
Owens?
Yeah.
Guyton.
Just just getting to the minute writing time.
Doing a really good job on top.
Controlling the action.
Yeah.
Using the whole body.
Talked about that pressure.
Keeping a lot of pressure forward when he can.
Into the lap.
Back on top.
Really good job.
And it's these last three second clean guys.
Finish finishes lead.
Espinosa Owens.
Pretty stingy until this last minute.
And, brought a little frustration out of Guy Todd.
Red.
Wait, wait.
I can in good shape here with three seconds left.
Going to win a tight one.
One here.
And the cyclones.
Five one with riding time.
Three more points on the board.
Is your winner.
The appreciation from the, Humboldt Gymnasium crowd.
Here we go.
Here's the roll through.
That time.
Really loves doing this.
He roll two, then he'll get his hips up and end up in a scramble, but ended up in a scramble, winning the score for the sage Jackets.
Here we go.
So here's a look at, brought Fedex truck across state.
He's a redshirt junior.
Ten nine record out of business Mark North Dakota going up against Isaac Dean.
Gentlemen ranked number 12 out of Medford new Jersey.
So this is a rematch from last year when Isaac Dean was at rider Rock.
Steady has a win just a little over a year ago a 4 to 1 sudden victory win over Dean in a dual meet Bismarck.
We know a couple of twins that, pretty tough out of Bismarck, North Dakota and, Terry Steiner.
They women's USA wrestling, freestyle coach just went into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
You're the director, Jim, of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Dan Gable Museum in, Waterloo.
And it's the 50 year reunion.
We're going to have no dues.
50 year, 50 great years.
You know, if you celebrate.
Yeah.
If you haven't been to Stillwater, go this, the last weekend of, June to Stillwater, Oklahoma, for that 50th celebration.
It is going to be special.
So if you've never been to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater or Waterloo, you have to visit those places filled with heritage and and, just such a celebration of the sport.
But, that last week or that first weekend in June in Stillwater, they're going to have a special celebration.
And, yes, it's something any wrestling fan should, mark their calendars and there ever a time that Stillwater is and still it's them.
Well, you walk into either Hall of Fame and it's, you get lifted up just walking in, seeing the images of all the champions, men and women love having you as the director there.
You know, ten national championships at Wartburg, one of the great coaches of all time.
And then now your, refired as the, director at the Dan Gable Museum.
Wonderful.
And they're spreading.
Yeah.
They did.
That was a great takedown there.
They did.
They give takedown.
A replay you got got his leg up.
Nice trip.
Oh that looks like a takedown to me.
But he didn't give it.
They're gonna they're going to review it.
Roll it.
You know.
Who are we.
There's Derek Saint John NCAA champion for Iowa on the staff looking at, Isaac Dean, one of his guys, Isaac Dean is fitting well here on, has his senior year transferring from writer, getting the opportunity to wrestle in, arenas like Hilton Head, places like this.
And and I'm sure that he feels very blessed to be in this situation.
But right now, they're looking at what they called no take down is.
And yeah, Dean is extremely hard to take down.
Yeah.
So defense can get this takedown.
That's a huge statue and getting over way to start.
It's a picture taken with history right.
Got they are reviewing their call.
And they have to decide whether they're going to overturn their own call.
And there's really nothing wrong with that.
If they see it now in slow motion and feel like, hey, maybe we missed it.
Yeah.
And I always respect the officials if they do that and if they decide, nope, we got it right and then we move on.
Cyclones fans here would like to see him remain the way it was.
It was called no takedown.
The Jackrabbits fed it, went in, got it on a single leg.
They're taking a look at our feed.
One second of riding.
Time for green.
Okay, listen, in the call, the mat is going to be changed to three.
Green takedown.
And he's going to get one additional second riding time before he went out of bounds.
All right.
So we're going to have a takedown.
Yes.
They they overturn their own call.
They hand the brick back to Damian Horn.
It was a successful brick thrown by Coach Horn.
They took a look.
He got the takedown with some riding time.
Yeah, that was nice execution.
And Dean hardly ever gets taken down his.
Maybe if there was a defensive wrestler of the year.
It's Dean is he is so hard to take down now to find his own offense right.
That's another challenge for him.
You know it's not easy to teach after years of habits, coach said.
But you got to get offensive.
And that's not been, you know, his forte but his defensive ability has been.
So that's a big time takedown by Fedak to start the match 3 to 1.
Now with the escape on deck.
After head and that's it.
You know Fedak who has beaten him before last year even though hey your guy comes in, he's the number 12 ranked guy in the nation.
You know, you know you got to ability to do it.
And he's wrestling like it.
Head 3 to 1.
And South Dakota State they want to get back in this match or down 18 to 7 team wise guys.
It's been the kind of match meet that we thought it was.
You're always going to get the fight from the Jackrabbits.
And Iowa State's very good.
And they've come out a couple of their starters out human.
They're not wrestling at 141.
And then, Vinnie Urban was not at 157.
50.
Six.
This is where you have to think about.
It's a domain.
It's about winning.
Now all of a sudden.
Fedak it took him, sudden victory to get the only takedown he got in the last match with Dean just a year ago.
So now you get the early takedown.
And does it change your strategy, Jim, when you know that you have a defense, opponent that doesn't have a lot of offense?
Yeah, but you want him to stay, right?
Set on the attack when he can get in on a good attack.
Don't hold out.
Hey, it's 3 to 1.
We got we got four minutes left and we got over half the match left.
Don't shut down here.
I take an escape.
Makes it 3 to 2.
Now.
It certainly does force the issue for Isaac Dean.
Dean being a little more offensive.
Slide.
They attempt a couple single attempts.
I love the shot.
In the past.
And I'm sure Coach Dresser in the staff is saying hey at some point you're going to be behind.
You know, that's not a I mean, it's just inevitable sometimes.
Now what are we going to do about it?
And you can and that's probably what he's been working on.
Great opportunity right here again it is a dual meet.
It's not the it's not the tournament there.
You seen a nice shot by Fenech.
But the big hips and power of Dean.
When we say he's hard to take down that's part of it man I mean he's really good people all year has gotten in but but has really struggled to finish on him.
Another nice shot.
Really nice.
Hey this is when, they'll remember this.
And coach, coach Dresser says, hey, when he finds his offense, he's going to be hard to beat.
Yeah.
And, it's, January 25th down.
There it is.
He shot a couple of times earlier, but this time he snags the leg, comes up right away, hits his trip, shoots in on the elbow.
And I'll tell you, coach dresser said it's not easy to teach after years of habits, but, I think, just shows you that Isaac Dean is wide open.
Trust his coaches, trust his offense.
And, not a bad time to find it late in January.
Yeah, this is the one you count after the match?
Yeah, that's what we're talking about.
Here we go.
Now.
5 to 4.
Dean.
Yeah, he.
Dean will be down to start the third period.
It's going to come down to a takedown.
Three tries, third and five for to take one.
But.
Reset.
Read cover a gun underneath.
Escape will tie it up.
We're all tied up.
The only difference right now between their last match a year ago when Dean was with Ryder is it was, no takedowns.
All regulation this time.
There's five points apiece put up each, have a takedown.
And more likely than not, a takedown is going to make the difference.
Whether it's in the next minute and a half or two more in sudden victory.
Nice shot by Dean.
Oh main shot.
You know that he's been he's had some reps in the room with that one.
And he's got to hit twice this the second one this time Fenech does the splits and fights off.
He's trying to fight off the single.
So far he has.
He's on the he's on the floor.
Yep.
They got to stop it when you.
Yeah it's on the floor.
His knee was on the floor.
And they called stalling for fleeing their or stalling on fatigue.
But I think the, the brick that was thrown by the coaching staff is a good one, especially 284 pounds.
Also, did he have that ankle before the, any part of fatigue went off on to the gym floor?
Right.
And I think there's a case to be made, but I think there's a case to be made that he had that ankle and that that might be overturned as well.
Sports information.
This is second nice single shot that Dean got in on and was scored on one.
And we'll see if this one this counts as score or not.
Yeah.
If you're the cycling coaches have you got to be pretty excited if yeah.
You know as you see pieces come together and already a really good team, a team that could, there's not a weight class that they have that could be on the podium.
And so Dean, who's already tough to beat, get an offense going because that outside to to his left, that outside, single.
Pretty lethal there.
He got to a pretty easy a couple of times.
Yeah.
Early in the match he shot it.
But it wasn't.
He didn't penetrate right these last two.
He was right there and then immediately elevates right to the feet.
Gives himself a chance to score.
About 184.
Holy cow.
What a oh 184.
You got Sinclair from Missouri.
You got, McKinley from Minnesota.
Number one right now is Rocco Welsh out of Penn State?
He's undefeated.
And, Ferrari on that of no take down is upheld.
However, the call is being changed because we're out of bounds at 115 rather than 113.
So Iowa State will retain their breath.
We are taking off the stalling against green and going action out of bounds.
So they uphold no take down and they take away the stall call unfettered because he went out of bounds before they called the stall call.
And so they give Rick back.
It's every yeah.
There you go a replay here.
Watch.
Now watch the left one doesn't get it right here.
But right there.
He does really nice job of hooking in that ankle.
And I think that it could have been called a takedown but they did not.
They uphold no takedown call that engaged of when we went out of bounds.
It went from 112 to out of bounds on the gym floor.
At 115, the stall call is taken away to an action call.
We are still neutral.
Neither wrestler has a stalling warning.
Yeah, the crowd doesn't like that one.
Jim.
Hey, that's way into it.
It's a very, very knowledgeable crowd from old to young.
Everybody is grown up.
You're born into wrestling.
When you're in Humboldt, Iowa and the surrounding areas.
Well, now we're here.
We are a minute left, third period, 5 to 5 dead.
Even.
Both both guys have had a takedown, but, Dean.
Dean is not wondering anymore if he can.
Yeah, he knows he can get to it.
Dean trying to keep the cyclone, streak going since half time.
165, 574 victories for the cyclones.
You're out front, 18 to 7.
Hard fought duel with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits where there's that single, gets in again coming out the outside.
Oh, 25 seconds left.
Dean trying to sit his leg out.
Or he does.
He does.
He comes around.
Whoa.
It's almost a full head.
It gets the leg scramble.
Oh, now he's big scramble here.
Oh, no defensive points.
Finnick hanging on for dear life here.
And time runs out.
They go to sudden victory.
Oh.
That was a good scramble by Fenech to save the takedown.
Three shots that Yeah.
Dean has gotten to the leg the last three shots in a row and they're there.
Fenech takes one.
Nothing doing.
Oh nice shot.
Really great effort by Dean.
Talk about kind of a misdirection and a change.
He steps over very offensively trying to get that right arm through.
Benning locking up.
He does get his hand through Fed and China.
Oh come up on top and leg.
Nothing gets a three.
When he Isaac Dean he earned it here.
Earned it on.
Isaac Dean has to be real excited but not as excited perhaps as his coaches are for the way he came back.
Put that offense together.
The crowd loves it.
Big win for the cyclones.
And he says here it is.
Here's a six.
Here's the scramble here.
And that's the end.
Overtime takedown.
Good good effort by fanning the demons just a little too much at the end.
Looking forward to this one.
197 from Kansas City Missouri.
So Bennett Berkey Cyclones All-American.
First freshman All-American.
History of South Dakota State.
And here comes Rocky Elam, transfer from Missouri.
A four time All-American, ranked number two going up against the fifth ranked Bennett Burgi.
The match of the night.
This is the kind of match that could be a quarter semifinal in the NCAA.
That is for sure.
They're going to meet first, though.
When it comes to the the big 12, Noah Rocky Elam out of Kansas City, Missouri.
Staley High School rent birdie.
Here we go man.
Bill Minnesota redshirt junior.
He's a five time state champ shot by Elam right off the gate.
Drags in for the takedown.
So pretty Mackey Elam coach to admit this guy is the real deal.
And he has been all year.
Grant that man his long arms.
He's undone by nine.
I'll tell you.
He's been he's seen it all.
Rocky Elam.
He is unfazed.
Probably the best wrestler on the team.
Read word.
Three surgeries, overcome a lot of adversity.
Issue with his back and his knee.
Like I said, a four time All-American at Missouri had another year of eligibility.
Oh, the last of the Covid year, guys.
Medical redshirt last year.
He did not wrestle, at the second half of the season last year due to injury.
Read cover.
You know one thing I noticed, Jim, he's always matched or bettered his NCAA.
Si.
Wow.
As always, matched or better his NCAA seed in his four, All-American read one, read two.
Pretty amazing to be a four time All-American now.
Hey, you got another?
Yeah, another shot at it.
Yeah.
You know what?
He's not wanting anything except the top of the podium.
And that would be big for the cyclones.
He's been at the top of the podium and everything.
Two time state champion, big 12 champ, a math champ, Mac conference champ, junior world champ.
But I think he almost traded all for an NCAA title.
No kid grants that read cover.
His brother Zach was a heavyweight two time All-American team.
Mater Hills and Missouri Redwoods.
His brother Brady is an assistant coach, the head coach of the RTC, the regional training center.
He wrestled for Penn State, his two time national qualifier.
You know Bergey, he went up a weight.
He was 84, goes up to 97, coach said.
Really thinks it was a good move.
2024 All-American at 84.
Got a world silver and U20s.
He actually excels more at freestyle.
You have people like, Tanner Sloan in the in the in the room for a few.
You know, first, your first few years, you're going to get better under Sloan, a couple time All-American or South Dakota State, one red, two.
Talk about a guy hard to get away from.
That's rocky island.
Both these guys have shown a lot of moxie in their career.
Both have been, back.
Good successful backside, bird knee to when he got fourth.
He won six in a row to get back on the back side.
And Elam has had to do the same thing.
Neither of them would choose to be there.
But if you're there, that's where the guts and gumption and grit comes in.
That is man out mad.
Respect has to do that.
That's a one of the mat one, you know, match of the time match.
And here's the next one.
There's the next one.
Yeah.
And usually they're real close.
You know it's not unheard of that those kind of, streaks you win one overtime after another overtime.
So warning red stripe returns and full, you know, gets us.
Back.
Scal call.
He's got two minutes and 14 seconds writing time.
38 seconds left in the first three set.
Red cover on his side on top in this one.
Red one.
Two of the best in the country.
Number two versus number five at 197.
Right here in the Humboldt High School gymnasium in Humboldt, Iowa.
Red one's hometown of the head coach, Kevin Dresser of Iowa State, red.
Green set.
Red.
Cover.
Not to go to practice the other night.
Watch Kevin dresser.
Hold court, run the practice.
Inspire his wrestlers for a couple hours.
An hour?
That's not funny.
I know they get it right out.
First period.
Man, that's a long right out.
Two minutes and 49 seconds.
Right at the first period.
Green.
The first choice.
The third red flag.
Bottom.
Guys we're going in.
Birdie deferred.
And All right.
Ready of a warning.
Rocky Elam chooses down to begin the second period.
Read that green cover.
Him up to his feet.
McGee.
His hands lock.
Looks like, Elam going to get his escape.
There it is.
Escape?
Four zero.
With a whole bunch of writing time for Elam.
Berg.
He needs a he's a sneak in a takedown.
Get back in this.
Not a great shot by Elam, but he's so long, he's still trying to pull that leg in.
You know, it look like he's out of position.
Both of these guys All-Americans.
Elam for Fedex or Burgi, one is a freshman.
There's another shot by, Elam.
He really draws that in tight, man.
He he shot from kind of far away.
But there's Burgi trying to get around.
Yeah.
Kind of sit the corner, watch the line.
Getting a good know trying to get that leg over his head.
Not allow.
And you don't want your leg to be straight okay.
If you're birdie.
Oh.
Out and they're out of bounds.
Good guy good effort there by Burgi looking for you.
Just get a there's a little blood run.
You know, you just get the sense.
And I said it.
Rocky Elam is undone by nothing.
He's been in every situation, you know, in the NCAA four times.
Big time matches with when he was with Missouri Junior World Championships.
This environment here is a new environment.
And one could get nervous intimidated by it.
This the the the, the crowd is on top of you, but he's he's unfazed.
He is unfazed.
And even every, every, every time there's a break, he just casually walking back to the middle, you know, taking his time.
And then when the whistle blows, boom, he's on it.
I read it the second whistle on the second third read.
You got a caution and a warning.
Warning here.
34 seconds left.
Second period.
Both these wrestlers.
About a month and a half time.
About six weeks from now, they'll be wrestling in the big 12 at Tulsa.
Sure, they'll be seeing each other.
Good opportunity that they'll probably see each other in the big 12.
They'll see each other at the NCAA.
You have a every match counts.
Every point counts.
Right now, the point favor Rocky Elam as they do now.
Number two ranked 197 pounder.
Burton takes Berkey takes neutral.
And why wouldn't you?
You've been rode hard.
Venomous is so good on top.
When your best chances is snag a takedown here.
Get yourself back in it.
What about the stuff in there is you take it.
Okay.
Keep the tie clean.
Tie sleeves.
There's a shot by Bergmann.
Oh, really?
Nice job of, evading.
And, the home crowd.
The coaches from Iowa State want a stalling for birdie, trying to get out of the bounds, and they get it in.
Everybody accomplished their goal right there because, Berkey didn't get taken down, but he did get the stall warning.
You notice how Elam the arms are so long when he puts his arm on the shoulders, you're so far away from his legs.
And oh, shot by Berkey and Elam really just kind of reattached their almost scores when those hips drop for Elam.
Yeah.
Is incredible speed.
Good technique.
Really nice job by Elam.
He just has the feel he.
Just a little earlier birdie was in on a close shot and I was also, Look at Ellen's arms.
Yeah strong too I mean he used he used his arms to, lift up burgi and make sure he didn't get any tighter.
So you got the quickness, you got the strength, you got the savvy, you got everything going for you is Rocky Elam protecting A40 lead with 15 seconds left seconds.
Bergey trying everything he can to get through the head hands defense.
Just not going to happen tonight.
Red one.
Green gets to the leg, but time is going to run out.
And a nice victory.
The crowd appreciates the one that was to get their first, look at Rocky here and Humboldt.
Rocky appreciates them.
And for the cyclones it's a win for Rocky Elam 33 more points on the board, 21 to 7 as we head into 285.
Next up, where else?
Impressive.
Iowa State has three native Cubans on its roster.
And younger Bastida and Osmani versus Ackerman.
Dion Bastida, who won big 12 titles in 2024, trained together from ages 9 to 18 and recreated the childhood photo as cyclones.
That's really cool.
That's we didn't get to see Anthony and he has really improved.
He's going to be trouble this year.
Anthony Diaz and then talk about the number one ranked heavyweight 285 in America, younger Bastida had to sit out last year because of injury.
Goes up against ranked Luke Rasmussen.
Always gained Luke Rasmussen had a big win in the Minnesota meet for the win South Dakota had over Minnesota.
Rasmussen, a junior, ranked number 24 out of Brookings, South Dakota.
He's not your typical heavyweight, Rasmussen.
I mean, he needs to get on top.
He's really good on top.
But Bastida is so good on his feet, that might be a tough chore.
How good is he on his feet?
I mean, are they with the NUM?
He's probably had in his career over 100 takedowns and that just doesn't happen as a heavyweight.
Well we're going to see some right here.
I think.
Nice shot by Rasmussen.
Oh beautiful job Rasmussen going for it and gets a ticket to throw.
Whoa.
That's why I said those jackrabbits came to him.
The rest came to wrestle.
And big takedown gets the number one ranked wrestler in his class, Luke Rasmussen, and prove he is one of those guys that, you can't you can't take it for granted.
Oh, no.
The crowd just said whatever money we just made, that was worth it.
Holy cow.
Talk about explosive grit.
You know, you want to make a younger man.
Obviously for the for Triton, two takedowns early in this first period.
The last match of the day pairs younger in on an ankle pick.
Drive through another takedown.
Yeah.
And he said let's do this more.
Yeah we're going to one point.
We're going to make sure you know that was a mistake.
That's his intention.
But Luke Rasmussen, he's tough.
He's going to make some noise all right there.
The junior yeah he was a two time state champ.
South Dakota third in the big 12.
Yeah.
Younger an All-American in 23.
Already showed us a couple of his shots.
He has shots from both sides.
And his ability to lift was already shown to the entire crowd.
To their delight, he was out of danger and up.
Another takedown.
10 to 5 with only two minutes into the match and we have had some fireworks.
Started out with Luke Rasmussen surprising Bastida with a nice takedown and Bastida answering with three more takedowns.
Here's Rasmussen's takedown.
Nice job.
Drove through the hips really nice and then found that far knee.
But oh, there's the answer.
Yes sir.
That is an answer.
And there he goes.
Snap down.
Go behind.
Just like that 13 to 6.
And let's try that again.
Right?
I saw him look over at Coach Dresser and said, coach, I said, okay, just keep him down.
The he says, no, I want another.
I'm having fun out here.
23 seconds left.
The first.
How much fun as a coach to have, 285 pounder like younger Bastida.
Wrestles like a 174 pounder.
Well, you know, you always want a good closer to having the best guy.
The number one ranked guy in the nation.
Your last match.
That's always nice to have that number in your back pocket.
The state of.
I was part of the, Cuban.
Are you want neutral early in his life?
Their their national program.
Not a lot of folk style reps.
And so, he can get her done on, on the feet, but, that's where he's going to stay because he can dominate.
Yeah, he's came into his own this year big time.
He's gotten better every year.
But this year he's just really solid in almost every aspect he doesn't like.
He doesn't like to ride ride much, but then hasn't had to.
Control another takedown by big data.
Just lowered his level, attacked the hips, went around, read one like look at Luke Rasmussen, a couple time qualifier, redshirt junior actually has a victory over Lance Runyon last year.
NCAA and Lance Runyon is the strength coach now.
Yes he is.
And Iowa State and Iowa State for the cyclones after, great career at you and and Doug Schwab, a wonderful young man who is now in charge of, the strength training, coaching, these guys in this area of their life.
So.
Under a lot of uncertainty.
And lost in high school.
30s left.
Second period 16 to 8.
Younger.
Bastida.
Nice.
Single by Vestido.
Okay.
Go to get his head out.
He's close, but.
Very, very quick.
Here it is.
Five.
Right at the end of the period.
And set the grade.
Your third for eighth this fall.
I got a feeling younger Bastida going to be taking a lot of pictures and signing autographs after this.
Me.
We got great coffee.
Green takes up green.
You have a stall warning.
Okay, wait for me.
Green.

We're going to be joined by the head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones, Kevin Dresser.
And I think that, we've got him here right about now.
You know, coach, what an atmosphere.
Talk to me about, the atmosphere here in Humboldt High School.
Well, it's wildcat country, baby.
Wildcat country show.
They came out today, man.
You had to.
Craig.
I looked in here about 20 minutes before and there was no seats.
And there was a bunch of people out in the lobby, and I said, well, you're all gonna have to figure it out.
Well, but what about your performance tonight?
How'd you feel, coach?
I thought there was a lot of good things.
You know, obviously we had a couple guys we didn't have at 141 and 157.
Some young guys that got some experience.
But, you know, I felt like our starters across the board, we talked a lot about going out and getting after guys and scoring points and entertaining.
And I thought we did a good job of entertaining.
Okay, coach, we, we love having Iowa PBS up here.
It was a tremendous event.
Thank you for the opportunity and great win.
Thanks a lot, coach.
Yep.
Thanks for being here, gang.
