Iowa Public Television Sports brings you the battle for state bragging rights.
The Iowa State cyclones battle the Iowa Hawkeyes in the meet, where historically you can always expect the unexpected.
And good evening to you, my friend, from Carver Hawkeye Arena.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
We're in our last college wrestling mate of the season.
Doesn't seem possible, but it is.
And we'll give you an address later on where you can write with comments.
And we've got the high school state tournament this weekend in Des Moines at Vets Auditorium.
Live at 630, we'll get a chance to see the best high school wrestlers in the state.
Now, the last time these two teams met, Iowa beat Iowa State by ten points up in Ames.
But this their success has been different.
Since then, Iowa State has had a disappointing season.
It's been a frustrating season.
They've had injuries to key veterans off and on all year, and they have the prospect of having their first losing season since 1950.
On the other hand, the Hawkeyes, that great weekend they had against Oklahoma State and Arizona State last weekend seemed to erase the question.
Marks.
Well, the question marks were there at the beginning of the year, but they aren't now.
People said, can the hawks contend?
I think they've answered.
Looks like they can.
Tonight, we want to show you some of the competitors on these two teams we think have the best chance of winning individual national championships or finishing very, very high.
And we talk about Iowa State.
You begin with our great 150 pounder, Tim Krieger.
A great one, is a three time all-American, already an NCAA champ seen here using his patented body lock for a fall.
If he can reach it, he'll use it.
He's a crusher and he's looking for another championship this year to add to his other one for the Cyclones, Tim Krieger.
And right behind him at £158, the fine freshman Steve Hamilton of Emmitsburg.
Fine freshman may be an understatement.
Steve Hamilton has developed into one of the finest freshmen and in the nation you see here, defeating with a single late takedown another fine freshman, Mark Rylance and Eric Voelker has had a disappointing last half of the season, but he's definitely the top contender at £190.
Well, last year he had a disappointing drop match with Brooks Simpson, but you can see here, he turned it all around this year and he has Brooks Simpson, Matt, back to the mat for the fall.
And that came in the first one up with Ames.
Now, the Hawkeyes are so tough with contenders at the lower weights there.
Steve Martin at 118.
You see here, he's using his patented finish to Granby finish for a win over Zeke Jones, a highly rated 118 pounder.
But can he beat Terry Brands in the wrestling room for the position at 118?
And Terry Brands will be in there tonight with his brother Tom Brands, who is now definitely a top contender at 126, seen here, destroying the position of second ranked Kendall Cross on his way to one of nine takedowns in the match.
That was amazing.
Absolutely amazing.
This is the last chance for a national title for Joe Mercury.
Joe Meltzer, he's always been a dangerous wrestler.
A three time all-American.
You see him in a scramble right here.
It's vintage Joe Mercuri when he comes out on top in a scramble situation.
And at 167, no doubt any more, John Heffernan is a top contender.
After that Oklahoma State meet John uses a high single right here against number one ranked Mike Farrell to take him down for the win.
And he always seems to come on strong at the end of the year.
Well, now the first time these two teams met, it was Iowa winning by ten points.
And now here we are in Carrboro, Hawkeye Arena, the home place.
What can Iowa State do to overcome that advantage?
Well, Dan Gable says if he loses any of the first four matches, it's an upset.
Well, I think Coach Gibbons has in mind a couple of upsets.
He's moved Jeff Gibbons up from 134 to 142 to take care of one of them.
Hopefully, if he can get another one in there.
And then three of their favorites when you've got five matches apiece.
And then the other thing we always talk about is the things you don't expect to happen.
And they happen when Iowa State wrestles Iowa and you'll see it and one minute here on Iowa public television Hall, we're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City for the big rematch between the Iowa State cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes and all that's Iowa State's record, seven, seven and one against the Hawks, although those losses have all been outstanding, teams for Iowa State and Iowa has lately won two big ones.
But in the series, Iowa leads and the last one up at arms was 25 to 15 in favor of the Hawks 000 and the matchups in this big meat between the Hawks and the Cyclones are 118.
That's what for Iowa State on the left against the first of the brands Terry Brands is at 120 that 118 Tom Brands at 126 today McCall against him at 34, Marino against Mercury Gibbons is at 42 against Eric Pearson of Iowa at 50 undefeated Tim Kreager against Doug Stryker at 58 another rematch something like the 14th rematch between these two old rivals, but they're freshmen, Rylan and Hamilton Thompson of Iowa State against John Heffernan.
It'll be Nelson at 177 against Don Finch, a freshman at 190 Bulker against Simpson.
They've had some exciting matches and at heavyweight Chris Knudsen for the Cyclones against Andy Hamlin, who is now a ranked wrestler and heavyweight position for the Hawks.
In fact, he's ranked sixth in the country.
The referee is the same man who refereed the first duel between these teams, Don.
They're of Midvale, Utah.
They go out around the country and find the best fit and get to come in and handle these major matches between these two top teams in the country, Iowa and Iowa State, year in and year out rank right at the top.
Captains are out on the center map now talking to the official.
This is what's happened recently.
Obviously, the Hawks have had the best of it over the past few years.
And in the last four meets, it's been Iowa over the Cyclones, four in a row.
There's Dan Gable, who looks like he has another powerhouse coming for the Hawks.
Last week may have settled a lot of the questions about whether he could compete at the national tournament this year successfully.
Looks as if they can add manic in front of Jim Gibbons.
Jim Gibbons, the young Iowa State Cyclones coach is already one one national title for his team.
And today he's hoping to show his team to advantage in a really tough place to go.
There's no fun for visiting teams to walk into Hawkeye Carver Arena, Tim Johnson and face this Hawkeye opposition.
They've only lost once since coming here and few years back.
So they have a tremendous record here in Carver Hawkeye.
Now, you'll notice that Terry Brands is wrestling at £118.
He and Steve Martin are still undecided as to who is going to be going into the tournament.
They could both go as high as the national championship, and they're in the same room.
Very seldom does a coach have this kind of problem.
It's really a coach's delight in one sense to have this problem and then it's a nightmare on the other because he's got two potential national champions at 118 coming down to the final week of the season before the Big Ten's probably until they decide who it will be.
Now, Terry Brands of Iowa has to cut quite a bit of weight to make £118.
It isn't easy for him.
He's 18 and three.
Sean Walker, sophomore from Ames, on the other hand, I believe is generally considered a small £118.
It isn't as hard for him to make this weight, right?
Right.
He is a small and his the key to Sean Ward is to keep the motion going.
He has got to move and keep the motion going and dictate the motion for it to get going.
Because if he gets into a power match, it's usually his opponent's advantage.
Steve Martin was in there in the first match between Iowa and Iowa State.
He beat Ward four to nothing.
In fact, if White has had a problem recently and has been scoring, he's looked stable out there, defends well, but has been unable to penetrate his opponent's defenses.
He's had his problems in the last year.
Couch ran around with a power move and he takes a two to nothing lead the first two points scored.
We'll be keeping track, too, of takedowns and that sort of thing as we continue tonight to it.
And I think Brad, looking back on what the combination of Sean Ward having trouble scoring in the last several matches and the fact that Terry Brands has been doing a lot of scoring, it's probably on the Iowa coaches mind that they would like more than a regular decision here.
And those make a lot of difference.
Remember in the first night it was 25 to 15.
Let's look at that takedown right here again.
He just stuffs the head, does a little short, little arm drag and comes around for two really getting his opponent Sean want out of position and taking advantage for the two point takedown first periods are 3 minutes long remember 2 minutes in the second and third they start on their feet in the first period.
That was a good sit out action by Sean.
What?
He cleared his hips, then cleared his hands and face.
Terry Brands for one point after having been ridden for 29 seconds.
Good riding time, of course, works in such a way that at the end of the match, if one wrestler has a minute or more than his opponent right in time, he gets an additional point.
But again, brands stuffs what comes around for what may look like an easy takedown.
Same action, same action.
Doug Perry brands the taller of the two is taking advantage of that height being able to stay on top, stop the head and come around here and he has what flat he's working on the bar on the near side, trying to control the arm and turn his man over for near-fall points.
You can go so many directions with this type of action, the bar arm and controlling the wrist.
You can look for tilt, you can look for bar arms.
You can look like you want to go a half right side right here.
Look at each.
He's looking to tell them he's going to load him up on the hips and try to get 3.5.
Good.
You are riding.
Time has gone over a minute.
Brands manages where they keep his man flat all the way to that period there Steve Martin who is his competition at £118 can you imagine that ranked second in the nation.
Well, I'll tell you what, I've got a luxury.
On the other hand, it's too bad when you have such good people, you don't have a place for him.
But the next place up is Joe Belfiore.
At 134 next year, we'll probably see the brands move up second period.
Watch starts on top up trailing by three, 4 to 1.
Head up right now.
All right.
Riding with a tight waist and like side to side above your head, that spiral ride, the brands moves in on it when the leg turns, go in and reverses it.
And so now it looks like a major decision is out in the cards and left.
What can find a means to score?
Well, we see the power factor right here.
He has the leg, but now he drives in with his shoulders, gets his hips underneath, cuts across for the double and comes around for two point reversal.
Really controlled the hips of Sean what and at the power factor right now and the power factor becomes very intimidating to the person being power brands Terry brands wrestling at £118 you just tuned in.
You're in time for the whole meet.
This is the first match of ten.
The Brands Twins are in the lineup for Iowa against the Cyclones.
Shawn White needs to clear that risk and not let Kerry Brands control it because Terry Brand's key to his ride is domination on top.
It's the control of the wrist.
Oh, he's really working hard on it.
Controlling what?
Well, we have a minute and 34 seconds of riding time and a minute to go in the second period, 6 to 1 in favor of brands.
That's Dan Gable.
He he's just tickled to death about the way these brands twins, hips come into his program and hear from their call situation.
A bad situation for Iowa State back immediately to the hawk Callaway with the finish boy all right off the whistle.
It is just a matter of overpowering going for the fall he had in mind the whole time and strength won out on oh, right here.
He just let him go.
He faces they both face each other and he drives across with an underhook drives the half through, flattens him out for the fall.
And just like that, it's Iowa six and the cyclones.
Nothing.
Now, that's the kind of thing when you come in here, look at this right there.
You see that he's getting both shoulder blades to the mat flat.
And when that happens for a second, it's a fall.
Oh, I see what Dan Gable is talking about when he thinks that he he's going to win his first more weights.
And Iowa State wants to interrupt that.
Well, here and right here is where I would state would like to interrupt.
And this is one of five rematches in this match between Iowa State and Iowa from the last dual meet and last time it turned out Tom Brand's favor.
What's the score in that one, Doug?
Well, the last time the last time these two teams met, the score was 8 to 2.
Tom Brandes beat Gary McCall.
He had a takedown in the first period of that match after and then he had a takedown in each period, in fact, and an escape for each man.
And then one penalty McCall picked up for Brand's roughness.
It ended up a two to McCall and Brad.
Well, I'm sure Tom gets a little bit fired up.
And what happened with his brother out there?
Yeah, I would think that he wouldn't want to do anything less than what his brother did.
Gary McCall in front of.
He's close to home of Cedar Rapids and he wants to do well in front of his hometown.
People here so close and all-American and real fine wrestler, good young man.
You get to out Gary McCall, the brands, the freshman from Shelden, what you want.
We saw an amazing exhibition from Tom Brandes last weekend.
He had 20 takedowns against the two top ranked at that time, top ranked teams in the country.
And both of these young men, former high school state champions from our state Iowa, Gary out of Cedar Rapids, Washington.
And of course Tom out of Shelden on Columbia after work.
All right.
We've used about a minute and a half here and the first period, which is 3 minutes long, nobody's really been able to penetrate deep into the territory of the opponent.
McCall managed to block off.
He couldn't block that one, though.
Here's a nice counter by McCall, and we have a gut check here in this first situation penetration by brand counter by McCall most to the double story takedown for Brian that's three three takedowns for the hawks right here he had penetration and after the penetration McCall was able to counter but then Tom Brandes came up with the leg and drove him down for two points and out of bounds.
Brandes controls with the ankle to keep McCall from making a first move and then goes up to the tight waist.
McCall does a nice job of controlling the hands right here.
He's almost out and he is good.
And that all came from getting the hips clear and controlling the hands.
Nice job of getting the ball, but you can't beat either one of these brands unless you can take him down and nobody's taken him down lately.
So Gary McCall is going to have to come up with some offense here.
2 to 1.
Brandes over McCall The team scores six nothing because Terry Bradshaw caught Sean walked right off a referee's position whistle put him on his back with 4 minutes and 10 seconds gone at £118 Iowa and Iowa State on Iowa Public Television Setting up, set up.
Let's go get it up.
Well, McCall's right out there thinking, stability, thinking, position, but he's having to be defensive right there, Terry.
There.
Tom Brandes dropped his level real nice, cleared, created an opening.
It was in on McCall, but they were too close to the edge of the mat and they were able to get out of bounds before any points were scored.
Now, Tom Brandes is is acting and Gary McCall is reacting here.
That's the way it's going right now.
Yeah.
And there's a warning against McCall.
Oh.
Oh, yeah.
So it's 2 to 1 at the end of the first period that came that warning came at the end.
Next time something like that happens, it would be a point awarded to the opponent.
McCall starts on top brands underneath McCall, who is essentially a good rider.
Those are the spiral right here.
He's trying to control the risk and loading up on his hips and get the turn for two.
And the key, of course, is controlling the risk.
But right now, Tommy Brands is able to catch Gary McCall in two however position and come out face it in for one thing about 6 seconds of ride that's all that was after that was taken away from what brands had put in on top second period 30 seconds gone right Get it, get it, get your shot, get the shot off.
Keep brands in the black, the Iowa Hawkeye Black double leg shot right through the middle.
He stepped right in.
Couldn't get the takedown, though.
What he's doing there, again, is creating an opening by by motion and keeping pressure on the head.
As McCall stands up, Grant shoots in, see how he likes to keep that head in control.
The head door and we have a minute to go.
So then when he goes for something like a heel pick, that's a good concern.
Good central weapon.
And there is the first point on a penalty for McCall backing away makes it 4 to 1.
And here's a takedown by Brandes At the end of the Man and to the Mat, McCall put his knee down just before he went out of bounds.
Again, Tom Brandes using this stuff a little short armdrag clear and behind the arm, coming around, controlling him, trying to control him right there where the knee is inbound to point to exactly the same move that his brother Terry used twice on Sean was on it, and Brandes with about 39 seconds to go and now coming in the second period and leading 6 to 1 drops down on the ankle to block the first move and then goes up high 30 time up in on him right now Tight race for brands The Hawks have controlled the Cyclones on these first two waves and things can build when you're in Carrboro Hawkeye Arena you just feel the momentum begin to rise.
We're almost through and now we are through the second period, 6 to 1 in favor of brands.
He has 38 seconds of riding time, and this time McCall will start down, says Choice.
Iowa leads six to nothing after a pin in 4 minutes and 10 seconds in 118 by Terry Brandes over the Cyclone to Shaun White Rams let him go.
What makes it six two?
He's looking for a major decision.
If he can get up there low, low, single from way out, he's still got control of the ankle.
It's a good counter try by Gary McCall.
We're into a scramble right here.
You know, we've got to go both ankles, but a 2.8 to 2 that started with a very long low single leg and he just worked at it from there, I think we'll see.
BRANDES Let McCall go again in this.
Try for a major decision, which means if he beat him by eight points or more minutes, they're going to let him get them to try to get to a little closer to riding time, maybe pick it up a bit at a time.
Yeah, he has enough time to get it.
All he has to do is take him down before there's 12 seconds left in the match.
If that was to be the case.
But Gary McCall, in other words, has a mission right now to prevent that major decision by taking Brandes down right now.
McCall was an all-American last year.
This year, he's 16 and seven, ranked 11th.
It's 8 to 3 here in favor of Tom Brandes.
The last rankings had him right, right, left and right there.
Doug, there's Perley McCall, the mother of Gary McCall.
A little concerned right now.
You have three who look pretty calm to me, though.
Yeah, there's Gary McCall, Junior from Cedar Rapids, Washington.
It's always great to see supportive parents in the stands again.
Astall.
Another boy that makes it 9 to 3.
Well, right here is a very important sequence right here.
McCall needs to finish this to prevent the major decision.
Did it go through a takedown by McCall reversal?
And it's 11 to 5 on that sequence of move McCall was out had taken him down Right here is where Tommy Brandes gets a takedown back or reversal.
Well a single I guess he called it the single.
I call it a reversal because it is 11 to 5.
Now he lets him go.
That's important for a takedown, for a major decision by brand.
Well, it's important for a takedown for Gary McCall to keep keep from it.
25 seconds to go in the match.
McCall has to keep working because the next penalty point is to right where at 126.
Yeah, I was going to say earlier that Tom Brandes is ranked number five, but that was the last series of rankings.
He has to be higher than that.
Oh, yes, that's right.
And McCall almost had a takedown, but Lands managed to shake him off.
Well, Don Neff, the official started to call two and then waved it off, saying there was no control, no major decision.
Yes.
No, no, not a major decision because there was no riding time.
A seven point difference.
Tom Brandes, however, has defeated Gary McCall for the second time this year.
The score was 12 to 5, 12 to 5, and it puts the Hawkeyes ahead of the cyclones nine to nothing, nine to nothing.
Iowa.
Well, here comes the sequence right here that we saw between Tom Brandt and Gary McCall.
Here's Jim Gibbons talking with Don that maybe we can pick this up.
All right.
But I want to go back again.
I'm over talking to unless it's to change the score or something like that.
Well, that's an automatic I'm not trying to do.
I know I'm not going to run this automatic going to try to get clarification.
I don't want to now to win on the bench.
But but you know, this one, I think.
Yeah, that's right.
Now we do see the replay where all of this argument came about.
Gary McCall comes out right here for two and then he says no to.
And so it did look like there were two, but he said no control.
So no points.
And I'm not sure whether there was a warning on the bench.
I think Don Neff was saying, you can't come talk to me unless you are questioning a rule interpretation.
And we have 134 Joe McCarthy, a senior veteran from Blenheim, New Jersey, for the Hawks with a record of 24 and four, up against Mike Marino, a freshman from Glenwood, Iowa, having a tough first year 916 as the firearms carry.
Yeah Ryan now but counter for the wizard by Marino has kept the score from being made so far these are the kind of positions enough.
Yeah I like it out here.
Fishing in troubled water, I guess you'd say.
Good counter by Marino.
Stay out of a dangerous situation there with the hard whizzer.
And he kept from getting taken down by thinking that was there in tie keeping his head up.
Good job, Joe McCarthy in the black from New Jersey.
Last year he finished second in the Nationals.
He got into the finals and then lost his final match.
Here he goes with a tough pair, hard against Marino, Eddie Marino on his back, two after a takedown and a nearfall on a throw by Mel PR, a bear hug, and he turns it into a four and nothing match right away.
Joe Joe McCarthy over Mike Marino of Iowa State.
Cyclones haven't had anything really good happen so far.
Alfieri Lots of experience against a freshman who tried to catch Marino in the middle of that stack, put him on his shoulders, wasn't able to stop it for nothing.
The back look, Iowa nine, Iowa State zero after the brands won the first right here in a body lock inside trip right here, Joe Mercuri takes Marino right down to his back almost, and then he comes back with it in good control.
Four extra back points border nothing right after that.
Valkyrie with a tough ride on top.
A lot of experience there he goes across the face, crossface to the forearm and try to bring the hands together here and get across face cradle.
If you can referee around for your wrist out Now he's gonna do something else on your arm, bard up back on top and flattens his man down.
Here he comes with that forearm and he has help during the near-fall position.
Hey, guys, guys, it's a three point nearfall.
Oh, my God.
Now Valkyrie going into a half Nelson.
He tried to make it even even more.
He'd like to get a pin out of it.
07i think first period ends a big, first period.
Breaker three But I've been watching Fiore parents.
There's his dad saying thank use your head right there.
His mother to the left has not watched practically any of the first period.
I had a glimpse of her and she was hiding her face in his hair, in her hands.
And so every time they started yelling approval, she looked up and he was winning.
Yeah, but nothing.
She looked up when she heard the crowd crowd yelling approval.
It was great.
So Marino starts on the bottom, trailing by seven.
Right.
Who is losing now here?
Nine Nothing and needs to turn it around somewhere early here.
His parents are all the way here from New Jersey and they have made several, especially his dad, several of his matches here.
And I would say the last couple of years, Marino missed the long low shot, got out of position.
Now fury comes behind him, the takedown, and it's 9 to 1 all ready major decision territory.
And we have only 30 seconds gone in the second period.
I go for the weight go 921.
Iowa public television coverage of Iowa against Iowa State our final college wrestling meet of the 1989 season.
We'll have the high school championships next week.
Get out of here.
Potentially dangerous position.
Jim Gibbons is upset, and rightly so.
I saw what he was talking about.
The hammerlock was way past 90 degrees and he's saying that's illegal.
It was hard for for effective for that other day.
Okay.
With his arm in tact.
Okay.
You got to get when you can see that he's looking for out of the back, that is illegal.
All right.
And if you don't call it, I'll pull them off.
Okay, Jim, the clock.
I don't see it.
I want this guy.
He's got his ass kicked up there.
I can see that.
Hey, with this guy, I got to give you a verbal warning.
You wouldn't know it.
But listen, he had a warning first.
Now he has a verbal one.
There is a verbal warning.
I will.
I'll watch it.
I promise you.
I'll do the best I can on it.
I'll do the best I can.
Take it.
He got it down.
Okay, I'll walk.
Okay.
Look, you understand what happened there?
It's a verbal warning against the Iowa State fans.
They understand it a lot better.
If we would have tried to tell him.
I thought that they did a good job of expressing themselves right there.
All right.
9 to 1 l three over Mike Marino.
Marino goes into a row.
But now, if you managed to keep that arm, it's a two on one situation.
He fishes in troubled water.
As I said before, he loves the scramble position.
He usually comes out on top.
He's been in that situation since his high school days.
It go, hey, nine, two, one as a score.
No, Gary was a world champion when he was in high school beating Russian and Mike Marino, a junior world champion, Mike Marino from Glenwood, Iowa.
I think actually as a freshman.
So sophomore there right.
He's a redshirt freshman.
He was Mike Marino was a state champion in high school.
Now, there was a situation where Belfiore felt that he was getting hip, you know, let him go pressure there.
And hey, he didn't care for that.
Going go 9 to 1 in favor of Belfiore over Marino the team score again Iowa nine Iowa state nothing Terry Brands pinned Sean Wall out of £118 and Tom Bram's decision Gary McCall 12 to 5 under arm span like you would have preferred not to.
I would have preferred a fireman's carry, but he wasn't there when he went under.
Valkyrie controls the arm so tightly there that it allows him a lot of different setups.
But, you know, Iowa State hoped to get two out of these first four somehow.
They have not been able to get either of the first two.
And now Kiara leads 9 to 2 at £134.
Coming up at 142, Erik Pearson against Jeff Gibbons, No time running out in the second period right there, 9 to 2 at the end of two periods.
Here's a reminder that an intermission after the 150 match Iowa public television event, it's traditional college wrestling memories feature.
We have a little musical montage of some of the people and events sport fans, participants, and that will also be a chance for us.
Then, after 150 to give you an address to write to college wrestling about suggestions, comments, your third period make your starts under.
And for the first time, Marino is in the top position, the big one trailing by seven.
Lots of writing time.
The writing time will be hard to erase, but that's the type of situation Mel carries dangerous from underneath.
Anything can happen I that already he has the he has the leg trap come up golden right here.
Moreno needs to put hip pressure and sprawl into milk puree because milk here he's coming up with position now, getting his hips underneath him and looking for coming to come around for the two.
If Moreno can hang on, get hip pressure, put his weight on top of fury for a stalemate.
Now, that's what he's looking for right now.
9 to 2 a minute left.
This this is one of these.
Where is this going to go?
Situations?
What happened?
What went up yards wrestling ground.
It finally is gone now.
Says he's seen enough and calls it a stalemate.
Actually, that went on quite a long time and nothing really happened.
1339 to 2 Now Kyari has a seven point lead with writing time down to about a minute 30 in his favor.
Here's a switch.
Another three second one work, and it's a reversal from now.
Perry now has a major decision.
Now the 11 to 2 in favor of Valkyrie 20 seconds.
Joe as he's head there in that head lever trying to keep in a lot of pressure on Moreno's shoulder.
Make something out of the bar right?
Mike Moreno, We'll be seeing Mike Moreno for the next three years after this.
For Iowa State, we're down to the end of the match.
It is a major decision.
Oh.
Oh, right.
In time they could well four two in favor of El Dorado over Moreno and Iowa has gone out to a big lead over the Iowa State cyclones.
1310 at the 13 to nothing after three matches.
What have we got down for the end of the year.
And there's Mike Marino.
He'll be back for another day and we're going to £142.
Now for the Hawkeyes.
It's Eric Pearson, the sophomore from Oak Grove, Missouri, and for Iowa State.
It's a senior Jeff Gibbons from Ames who has a losing record.
That's unbelievable, isn't it?
Well, after being a two time all-American, going first to be a three time this year, it's not where he wanted to be at this time of the year, I'm sure.
But Jeff Gibbons is a determined young man, and I think this is the time of year you'll see him turn around slowly recovering from a knee injury in some ways.
And he's up at 42 because he's had difficulty with weight.
There is the takedown right at the edge of the mat Aaron.
Here's controlling the two on one situation inside.
Trip into a double leg for the two with the toes in good execution by Eric Pearson.
And good things are happening for Iowa bad things for Iowa State So far.
This is one cyclones hope to win, even though Jeff Gibbons has lost five matches in a row, 2 to 1 now after the escape from a hit in there, Jeff Gibbons is controlling the two on one right out.
Two of his arms on one of Eric Pearson's Pearson is able to fight out of it.
Yes right Yeah.
Hey hey Ali come back to the center with some of the Iowa State cheerleaders who've made the trip from Ames.
Good crowd at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Pearson channels on a leg, straight in single leg, head to the inside.
And Gibbons counters in hard.
Got the two Good counter good hip action by Gibbons.
Good counter by the senior.
That makes it three two good run and he puts the leg in against Eric Pearson are got control the ankle he's got the legs in he's trying to turn Eric Pearson.
Yeah first you must break him down hard.
Oh now we're just about halfway through the first period with Gibbons leading 3 to 2.
That's only the second kickoff at Iowa State.
Chatham is me right here.
Pearson comes in on a tight single, but right there you saw the Crossface by Jeff Gibbons.
He is able to put Eric Pearson out of position crossface and come around in the leg and get to on the whistle.
After we come to the referee's position, Pearson manages to get to his feet, turn in and escape.
So we're tied at three, three with a minute and 26 to go.
There's the number of takedowns Iowa eight, the two reversals, that's two points each and there falls all in favor of Iowa.
Those near Falls came from Belfiore.
Remember in the first against Marino, who broke up his pirates three three at 142 Iowa third team, Iowa State nothing after three matches up in a decision and I made decision I said Eric Pearson in the black mouse that they traded single leg attempts and Pearson managed to come out of it with good position front headlock back.
They go to the center.
Another youngster for Iowa sophomore.
We're looking down the Iowa lineup, the prospects for the next year or so and right.
It is a promising future for Dan Gable's Hawkeye team.
He's his future.
The one he's concerned about now is the next month, next couple of weeks.
And I think it's fair to point out that Jim Gibbons has a significant amount of his scholarship wrestler's redshirted this year, and he's hoping for a lot greater things out of some young wrestlers in the coming years from the Cyclones program that we haven't seen at all.
Dan Gable has several freshmen in the starting lineup and doing well.
Steve Hamilton is in the Iowa State lineup and there are a number of redshirts that haven't wrestled at all this year.
Right now, Jeff Gibbons has turned it around a little bit, putting the pressure on Eric Pearson and going out of bounds three, three, Pearson and Gibbons at £142.
They each have a takedown.
They each have an escape there at the end of the period, end of the first period, we're tied three, three.
There's De Gibbons, who is one, Jeff's mother, the down.
He's been troubled here every wrestling match that the Gibbons boys of wrestling she's very loyal fan a lot of them a lot of them coming off Gibbons is out in a hurry.
Well, he doesn't want to settle yet for an escape.
He might get a reversal out of this.
And he did five three on a nice quick move, Gibbons cleared his hips, came right back into the legs, and the hips of Eric Pearson didn't settle for one point.
Came around 4 to 5 to three in the second period.
And Gibbons is a good rider.
He's strong on top course.
He's up against 142 pounders now, and that's maybe more tough liking, though, as far as the way he feels.
So now there's a little plug for the station that gives more wrestling coverage than any station in the nation here.
Gibbons with a tight waist, Pearson turns in, escapes.
It's five four good solid match between two 142 pounders Jeff Gibbons of Iowa State and Eric Pearson of Iowa five four.
This one's long, far from over.
They want to go on 30 seconds into the second period right now, know there's going to be a balance.
He's trying to keep.
Jeff couldn't keep Pearson's shoe low.
He almost got Pearson.
He almost couldn't get Pearson.
I thought he was going to get the shoe.
As a matter of fact, Pearson is having trouble putting the back on how he's got it back on 5 to 4 with a minute to go in the second period.
And Gibbons, the man in red by one.
Gibbons is the man that's put in the pressure right now on his opponent.
Let's go.
And I think that is disturbing the Iowa coaches more than anything else.
Is that the time that they momentum has changed in that respect?
Now there's Pearson dropping in a single leg cut off by Underhook Gibbons kept good position again, the pressure right here put on by the Iowa State wrestler here, Jeff Gibbons, having 38 seconds to go second period quiet Remember at 150.
Coming up next, undefeated Tim Krieger ranked first in the country against Doug Stryker, moved by Pearson.
Again, Gibbons had the two on one and he kept the position at half back.
And we're pretty close.
Referee Don Nesbitt Vale, Utah.
Do you think Donna Pearson would against Gibbons?
And we're on the edge of the mat now with almost no time left here in the second period right here, the man who fought in the center five four at that as the second period ends and this man, Pearson, trailing by one, will go under, head up with a chance to escape and tie the score.
His just oh, that's Jeff Gibbons, who's been the aggressor, right?
No, no.
Pearson decides to go in the neutral position and not be ridden because they're too close to riding time.
That's why 55 seconds are right in time for Gibbons.
And the Iowa coaches don't want Gibbons to get it.
Pearson is having trouble with an arm and he grimaces in pain every once in a while and makes me think he hurt himself early.
Well, he got hurt early in the year and maybe reinjured that shoulder that he hurts.
Yeah, but he's a tough old boy now.
Okay, Here's Dan Gable.
I think he wants to discuss this with the official right over there.
Yeah, we got a little trouble.
Here we go.
Yes.
All right, I'll do it.
445.
Are you okay?
Okay.
Okay.
He's asking about the injury, and Don Neff seems to feel it's okay.
Well, Eric Pearson told him it was okay, and so there they go.
Let's just.
Martin for a second.
This is Pearson against Gibbons.
It's a good effort by both wrestlers right here.
Nobody's been able to penetrate in the last few seconds.
Somebody is going to get something off.
Nobody's been warned yet.
It's five four gibbons over Pearson with a minute, 15 to go in the match.
Iowa leads in the meet 13 to nothing.
They won the first three matches with a pin, a major decision and a regular decision to fight for Gibbons.
You just know the effort level on both these young men is fantastic.
It's it's really going to be an exciting last minute.
Gibbons has been going under quite a bit and he's been very good about turning in to face Pearson.
So the Pearson's not been able to counter him.
Eric has got away with a man who would be less, a less a good reactor in a situation like that, would have had a takedown in a time or two.
Now again, Gibbons has the two on one on the edge of the Mack, the 35 seconds to go, and that's Doug Stryker, who'll be up next against Tim Krieger, beaten already by Duane Goldman.
Four time all American for the Hawkeyes.
Pearson was not able to penetrate to the leg the way he wanted to.
Eric and Gabe Gibbons was out of position and he is warm for the start.
Gibbons Warren, is that him?
Right?
And that really infuriated the Iowa State bench.
Well, I don't think any warning should be given at all for these two that both wrestling and I think the referee got around 20 seconds to go.
Now we're down to 15 and Gibbons has a two on one tie up.
We're back to the center, only 4 seconds to go.
And unless something really quick happens, it would appear that Gibbons and there it is.
Gibbons has won the first Iowa State victory, no riding time, although Gibbons had 55 seconds and close to it, 5 to 4 in favor of Gibbons.
And so the Hawkeyes now lead Iowa State 13 to 3.
It's a hard fought match That was tough, very hard fought match on both cards, great effort by both wrestlers.
And that breaks a five match losing streak for Jeff Gibbons.
The Iowa state coaches said that Jeff has been coming around.
They thought he would have a good effort today and he did beat Eric Pearson.
A tough, tough young wrestler.
Now we're at 150.
Tim Krieger, undefeated for Iowa State, number one ranked.
He's 22 and zero against Doug Stryker, a freshman from Star Mount High School.
Him be strong.
Take your pick up one free, long single leg attempt by Stryker.
He got out of position Kreager trying to control from the essentially the front headlock position there buddy That's not one that Kreager works from a lot.
This is more of his liking.
In the opening, we saw that body locked it he likes to use and he's got so much power and when it is there, he'll use it.
There's a heel pick and that's two points for Kreager and two points for Tim Kreager at £150.
This is one of his positions.
He likes to load people up and go to the back.
If he can do it, he'll score on you very he'll score all night, Right?
And he's controlling the wrist again across wrist coming across and trying to load him up and he's trying to elevate him with his own knee right there.
One more.
And there's a near fall position that did that wasn't the near-fall.
He had to hold him for a counter to back there.
There's the Near-Fall point right now.
Got the porter Nelson was looking to crank.
He's looking for the fall.
You can tell that Stryker was tough enough to come out of that.
Kim Kreager is looking for the fall in this match.
4 to 1 Kreger over Stryker.
The Cyclones need it.
The score is 13 to 3.
Iowa over Iowa State.
Jeff Gibbons just won the first match for the Cyclones.
Two on one tie up for Kreager.
And look at why he's going up.
It's funny how the home crowd does make a difference.
The young Iowa wrestlers trying to intimidate on the side, which is a tactic that does just that.
You'll hear the crowd going nuts in right there.
Tim Krieger pushed a little bit in the crowd, But hey, what's going on?
You know, it depends where you're at.
Stryker now working on a two on one, but Krueger comes right back with a heel pick and comes around the takedown.
He was now up 6 to 1, right up and drop.
And immediately he goes to work trying to load his man up.
Three, four, back three.
What's that like coming back?
Here he comes again.
He's very confident in that kind of a position.
And it's frustrating for him.
Krieger goes right to his back and a lot of the crowd watching him, spinning himself, well, they've seen him here a couple of times in the last a little while where Mark Riley had that great defensive spin last week.
And they're looking for it here a minute and 27 seconds of riding time as we come to the end of the first period.
I mean, Krieger leads 8 to 1.
Hey, Krieger loves to work the tilt right here.
He controls the rest, loads him up.
As Doug was saying later, he likes to load him up on the hips, and now he tries to break that 45 degree angle for the two point.
Krieger started on the bottom.
Stryker put the leg in right away as Krieger comes to the feet.
Come on.
Here, right now, that's a stalemate.
There's Jim Gibbons.
He's hoping for big points out of Krieger.
Major decision, at least.
Although Stryker's, a fine young freshman from Arlington, Iowa, star Mount High School.
Yeah, well, he's got a major decision now.
If he gets out in to second round, pick him up.
He didn't make it.
So the seven point lead with 59 seconds of riding time up eight points, actually, because that was his point.
It makes it 9 to 1 right now.
Gibbons with a front headlock and a strong one, but he doesn't want to use that one.
He'll pick again.
Over the years, that's been one of the best offensive tools in the Krieger arsenal that he'll pick from tie up positions that could have helped Johnny Krieger in the Red was fifth in the nation.
His freshman year.
He won a national championship two years ago.
He finished second in an overtime match, a tough one last year at Ames.
How official Don Knapp is.
I don't know why he called time, but he did.
Those are the Krieger's from Mason City, Redding, Karen and Herb Krieger.
They've had an exciting wrestling career with their sons and is now on cloud nine two.
One is the score.
We have 35 seconds to go in the second period.
Iowa 13, Iowa State three.
But Krieger leads here for the second, and we have one period to go after this one.
Let Rick give me one.
That's Doug Striker long single carried easily by Krieger.
Come on in for two and it's 11 two one good quick move by Krieger That time he was able to sprawl didn't even hit the ground went around for two Now he has a build up to right on time again he has a minute 12 and it's counting.
There's the end of the second period.
Again, a reminder that after this match, we'll show you our traditional college wrestling memories feature, a montage of people and events, and also give you the address to write to comments here.
And Stryker bailed out.
He was going into a body lock and Tiger knew it was coming and went down to all fours.
Yeah, that's Jeff Stryker credit for knowing what was coming.
You don't want to get in that one.
So it's 13 to 2.
After the escape, we get down, straight down.
Because if Krieger can reach you, if he can go chest to chest with you, then you're in deep trouble.
One of his best boys shows of dominance with people.
And you don't want to be one of those people who he can reach.
Well, the only good thing out of it is the pain won't last long because he usually gets it done faster by working 13 to 2 in favor of Krieger over Stryker here at 150 Stryker.
Now it's getting dominant.
Krieger under the arm again.
He's giving up 15 to 2, 15 to 3.
After the escape, he'll pick 17 to 3.
All it takes is one more takedown, and it's over.
Because that would be, it seems like Stryker's more worried about getting from his back than he is getting technical from him.
Oh, again, he would like to get a technical fall here.
If you beat your man by 15 points anywhere in the match, it stops.
Here comes Krieger here.
But it and there it is.
So the takedown makes up 19 to par, a technical foul by in favor of Kevin Krieger.
And now it's here.
We come to intermission with the score 13 to 8 in favor of the Iowa Hawkeyes over the Iowa State cyclones.
Another big win for number one, ranked undefeated.
Jim Krieger.
We have five matches yet have to go.
We want to tell you to about what we have left in the season.
It's not just over because we have college wrestling today, but next week is high school on Saturdays.
No, it's great.
I was at a district tournament yesterday and saw a couple of good wrestling teams on Lisbon and Morningside and New London and some other boys High school wrestling championships this next weekend, Live at 630.
I'm really looking forward to it.
That's going to be a lot of fun.
And if you're interested, too, in writing to us, here's the address or comments about our college wrestling series.
And that post office box is 6450 of Johnston, Iowa, 50131.
That's the address right there for Iowa Public Television, our college wrestling series.
Now we have something new to talk about to this.
We're really happy to tell you about.
Iowa Public Television is going to have special coverage The Drake Relays in 1989.
That's the first time that's happened, The Drake Relays.
So you can look for that later as the season goes on.
We will expect this premier track and field event to go to the state wide audience.
It's going to be held April 28th and 29th, as usual, in the Drake Stadium on Demand and 1989 Drake Relays coming this Friday, rather watch only here on Iowa Public Television again, the score at the halfway point in Iowa against Iowa State is the Hawks 13 Iowa State eight.
The Hawks won the first three and then the Cyclones the next two.
Well, nothing really unusual has happened in the first five.
We've had some good matches.
We had an exciting start with Perry Brandes at 118 and at 126.
Then Tom Brandes followed up his brother and at 134, Milk had vintage male carry.
He was turning his opponent every which way but lose at 142.
Then Iowa State got in there and Jeff Gibbons got a win after a few losses in a row.
So that was good for Iowa State.
And then they came back with a strong performance and a technical fall by Tim Kreager.
So that's where we are right now.
And we have one of the best matches we think of the night coming up as the very first one on the second half.
That will be the two freshmen, two redshirt freshman from these teams, Richland against Hamilton.
And they've been going to bat each other since about fourth grade, 12, 13 or 14 matches.
They've wrestled each other.
We know what happened the last time Steve Hamilton won that match.
But any time you wrestle somebody that that many times you know each other's best moves.
And it was only 5 to 4.
Hamilton is the ranked wrestler.
He is he is sixth ranked in the country right at this moment.
He's talking with his coach, Eddie Mannix there.
And the first time that Hamilton had lost in a good long while was against Dan St John's, who is a premier wrestler from Arizona State.
If you were with us on Tuesday night, on our Tuesday night, 9:00 Iowa Public television broadcast of the Hawks against the Sun Devils, you saw Hamilton Ah, you saw the St John of Arizona State.
And you know how good he is because he really took it to Mark Ryan that night.
But Hamilton is in his first year of varsity competition, and so is this young man, Mark Rylance, from Eagle Grove.
And you don't expect you wouldn't call it even though the record is looking at them right there.
Quite a difference.
I wouldn't call it an upset no matter who won.
No, I think you've got the wrestlers that have almost equal chance to win here and they both know it.
So it's going to be a great match here.
Again, 13 to 8 as we start the second half of matches in Iowa against Iowa State.
The Hawks lead the Cyclones £158.
Richland in the black and Hamilton in the Red Hook Cup, at least on the match on the mat out there.
I don't think there's any love lost between the two of them.
And that's the way it should be.
Out on the mat.
Two tough ones at that time.
Now, here's what happened in the first half.
Iowa State, because of Krieger's seven takedowns, now has more takedowns than Iowa behind and reversals even in near Falls, the pin was a big difference, a major decision on each side that the Hawks won three matches in the Cyclones, only two all time.
But Mark Hamilton in the red, Rylan in the black, we have coming up next happened and against Bob Thompson at 167 finish against Nelson at 77 and a rematch between Simpson and Voelker at 180.
And then Andy Hammond wrestles Chris can out of Iowa state at heavyweight that's better than that one of those sun elbows out so far Mark Rylan right there a little temp to the outside single dropping down has made three or four attempts there with not much success.
I know they both wrestle £158 all year, but you look at him, doesn't Mark Rylan looks bigger than well, I think he's a 158 pounder.
When you say where should they be?
And him on to 150 pounder.
But I think the reason is pretty evident why Hamilton isn't 150 in the cycling lineup, but I think Hamilton will grow into and we will see him at 158 next year.
That's just my opinion.
Rylan and Hamilton, we saw Ryland beat West White of Oklahoma State and then from the bottom, thrilling finish for Drew a match up last year.
It was a week ago Saturday night at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
There's no score here.
They've gone through 2 minutes so that a lot of exciting wrestling happens in front of that child.
And they're going to get in that car someday.
This will all look familiar to that young person and they'll wonder why Mark all stored away somewhere and one's unconscious.
Now we're 45 seconds from the end of the period.
Right?
Right.
So far, neither has been able to make penetration into the midsection of the other.
And that's been the story both men been trying to control.
Ahead, head and look for the angles and look for the takedown.
So Hamilton gets a front headlock position now right on the edge no score.
It's interesting.
In the last match they had, they went the entire first period without scoring.
Also, why now come on, come down and get one.
Well, as you say, 14 matches since junior high school.
They have seen each other on the feet a lot, lots of freestyle.
I'm sure Mark, 15 seconds and less now, as you can see by the clock up at the top of your screen.
Iowa, 13, Iowa State, eight.
Good luck.
It was a familiar sight at any match that Mark Rylance is or has been for the last several years.
His dad, Mark Rylance, a long time great coach at Eagle Grove, very big supporter and mentor for his son.
Sit here, read, Cut.
Rylan takes the bottom position.
It was his choice comes right to speak at the throw.
You got to start out there.
You're going to get Give me a defeat.
One on the way.
But no idea hasn't quite faced Rylance yet.
That was Hamilton back there.
Both wrestlers had good position in that if Hamilton had his hips underneath his control in the head.
But Mark Ryan was able to hook in with his leg and keep from being thrown down to the mat, brought in 24 seconds.
Steve Hamilton comes on top.
Go.
Come out here now.
Go and hack across the rail and finally manages to get up to his feet.
No, no.
But Hamilton has been a good rider all year, and he's still in the top position.
Well, using that spiral ride pressure up on the head with a half now, you'll see him stick the spiral right in and do what he has to do to keep the pressure on up high.
He's already written him longer this time around than he did in the last match when Rylan was able to escape 27 seconds into the second period for a 40 seconds.
Up to now, Rylan needs to escape.
That writing time could turn out to be very important.
You see the pressure up high, throws the half in.
He's got to spiral in, he's out on his toes putting his weight on right on.
And now he's got the risk on the edge of the mat.
Oh, yeah, Things are going well.
Hamilton is trying to keep.
Then he ran off in a minute and 13 seconds of writing time for three men that Steve Hamilton down stays that way for the whistle rip.
He's been the best of the really young Iowa State wrestler so far.
When stays in control.
He's 39 seconds to go in the first period Now frustration among the Iowa coaches.
They want their man out of there and sit there and up.
Oh, oh, look down.
A spiral ride still from Hamilton now on the feet switch and finally riling this out.
Took him a minute and 42 seconds to get out, but he's gone.
And it's one nothing in favor of the Iowa wrestler.
All right.
Lucky, lucky.
We're at the end of the second period.
We're doing well as we continue to compare to here.
We have the replay and he's able to switch.
It's almost a standing switch, a diving switch.
He switches for the two, but opt for the escape comes out for one more cautious ahead.
Now one to nothing but Hamilton has riding time.
Last time the match was 2 to 2 and Hamilton had a minute ten writing time.
So Ryan's really got a better advantage than he did in the last match.
Hamilton wanted to roll, didn't come out of it, but he has 30 seconds to escape to erase that point.
And there it is, a minute 25 Writing time for Hamilton is now 115 and we're back on the feet again.
Good match.
And this should be an interesting last minute and a half.
There's some of the crowd calmer Hawk-Eye.
We're at £158.
Iowa leads Iowa State 13 to 8 coming into this match.
And it's one one here down again, you know, guy down by nothing so far, they haven't settled anything on the feet yet.
The last time Hamilton had a takedown in the second period, that was the only takedown between the two, he got it with a single leg this time.
Now, Hamilton counters for the fact that pressure put on a front Porter Nelson But we're under a minute single leg by Hamilton But Rylan's in good shape.
Rylan has the single leg now, but they're on the edge of the mat.
Nobody will score.
That's the big point here, is that if nobody is taken down, Hamilton would win because he has riding time right in the middle seconds to pull it out.
Rylan comes in on the leg, wasn't able to keep it.
One of the slide under the arm.
Hamilton could take the stall in one.
And right here also he could have 20 seconds to go.
But Hamilton will probably have to make a move here to avoid a warning.
But it's getting late enough and I'll take it.
He'll take it now.
He has to be.
You saw Rylan across the back.
It's getting to the point where he may have to take that throw if he can get if he could get it, maybe take a chance on it.
Oh, 6 seconds.
There is the warning against Hamilton, but there's not time for Rylan to Win and it's over with right in time again.
Steve Hamilton thinks his Iowa opponent, Mark Rylance by 1.2 to 1, bringing the team score within two points.
Teams are two points from each other now Iowa 13 and Iowa State 11.
I have a feeling there won't be many matches that are anything to close between those two young men over the next four years.
There's Hamilton.
Looks like he's got a sore ear there.
Why?
People wear air protectors 2 to 1.
HAMILTON Over.
RYLANCE And we've come to 167 here.
It's John Heffernan, rank number four.
He's been coming on strong lately, and his opponent is Bobby Thompson.
Bob Thompson, a sophomore from Ames who has stepped into this 167 spot.
He just won another wrestle off against Jeff Kelley of of Iowa State, and he's been in there quite a bit of the year Heffernan in behind him Thompson to his knee and gets the takedown.
Like I said earlier John Heffron has seen the last few years to always come during this time come on enough to become an all-American this year.
I know that he has his sights set on the NCAA title.
Ha ha ha ha ha.
Heffernan Leading to nothing and writing.
Thompson, who is quick, faces him for this game to one.
It's not like that.
John Heffernan You see the big wrap he's wearing because of an injury to his knee.
Do it all, John.
You're going have to do it all.
But the injury and all.
He's been tough lately.
He beat the number one ranked man Mike Farrell of Oklahoma State and they do meet here about a week ago.
Thompson's been a real workhorse for Iowa State, moving wherever they need him, whatever weight they need him, you know, wrestle once or twice this year, 290.
The real team player, he's out of Ames High School.
That also tells you something about the kinds of injury problems the cyclones have had this year and they still don't have Jeff Kelley back, who, as it turns out, a pulled leg, turns out has a pulled ligament.
He injured that in the match against wrestling at Arizona State.
They think he'll be back in two, three weeks, maybe in time for that pull in.
The tournament's go.
Oh, thank you, Mark Heffernan, good tall, lanky 167 pounder, senior from North Olmstead, Ohio, the hotbed of wrestling at Saint Edward's high School.
That's that's Dan Gable and score on the board is 13 Iowa and 11 Iowa State and we have this and three matches to follow up in Iowa public television coverage from Carver Hawkeye Arena and Tim Johnson and analysis I'm Doug Brown.
Well, it seems like, Doug, that John afternoon is a little shy of going under and probably because of that leg.
And Thompson's a little shy going under because of the size difference possibly.
And so we have a fight in a public match.
And for control of that, arms up at the top, 36 seconds to go.
Jim Gibbons, he has his jacket on the second half.
He had his jacket off for a little while.
The first.
So Heffernan scored a takedown in the first period, got about 8 seconds of riding time before Thompson got away.
And that's where the score comes from.
It's not 2 to 1.
His position has come back to the center.
There's not enough time here for anybody to score.
Okay, First period's over 2 to 1.
HEFFERNAN The choice goes to Thompson.
Thompson's going to go under.
That's what Iowa State goes under.
He just could just finish up slow, slow.
John Heffernan Tough takes the top position.
Our number four ranked £167, but that was before those rankings were made, before Heffernan beat Farrell and now Thompson comes out, Tyson scored a Hanson came out nicely and he says, Hey, what an hour for director Roger Clemens has been keeping statistics on how many of the escapes these wrestlers get are earned escapes where they were not just let go.
And Iowa State has 15 escapes, of which eight were, I might say, effort.
Iowa State had five escapes, and all of those were times when they were let go.
So right the other way around, it was all hard work escapes.
Okay.
Seven escapes for Iowa State were earned and all of the Iowa 5 to 2 Thompson against Heffernan again, while we had a feeling through the first half of this, even though there were some there was up here a couple of major decisions, some emotion here in there that nothing highly unusual happened.
Nothing really highly unusual has happened yet, except for the closeness of this match right here.
And that's it.
It might not be highly unusual, but we're approaching.
Unusual.
Yeah.
And this is why I bring it up, because the Iowa fans are a little restless here.
And the Iowa bench, I know, would like to see them put this meat away here one.
There you go.
I like to see the Hawkeyes do something.
They're favored definitely here, of course, with Heffernan over Thompson.
They have Finch against Nelson coming up next.
But Thompson has been able to keep good position.
And really that's because Heffernan really hasn't forced the issue that much so far.
28 seconds to go in the second period.
Two, two, one Underhook inside.
Let's go take down in the first period by Heffernan.
Remember that Heffernan will get the bottom spot in the third period and you would expect him, even if nobody scores here, to then take a lead.
Peter Stein walked in both manner.
Call both men.
Don Neff is a board observer here.
Apparently John Heffernan comes back into position.
We have 8 seconds to go.
In the second period.
So it's two two.
Each man has been warned.
This match takes on an important character now because it is so close that right here it looked like Heffernan got injured slightly on the knee.
That's all wrapped up there and I think it's probably because his knee hit the hard floor and it was on the open part of that pad.
Again, as we said, Heffernan is on the bottom and he is the man who would expect to pick up the escape point here and go ahead.
Thompson Cut him off there and they go back to the center right back up.
Bob Thompson, former state champion in high school, his senior year undefeated senior year, now sophomore for the cycle in this position and expects Heffernan to come out and he did one point okay.
Heffernan leads 3 to 1.
Thompson has his eyes on winning this match and of course Heffernan doesn't want to give it up.
It's going to be an interesting last minute and 40 seconds.
Thompson is shaking his head.
He got bumped.
I think he thought maybe it was a finger in the eye, but no, it looks like he got bumped on the forehead.
He says he's okay.
Okay, stop time pretty quick.
Three, two.
Heffernan Thompson.
Oh, maybe a small one.
67.
But he is quick and he's game for the situation.
Now.
Heffernan drops it on the leg and gets the takedown.
It's a little distance for Heffernan.
That's what he had to have got in on the single head to the inside right here is just able to take the balance away from Thompson, lower his level for the two five to now.
He goes up, back up on top again.
Here's Thompson clear in the arms quite well again.
Now Heffernan is trying to keep the pressure on top, but he did so successfully with the Half Nelson looking Heffernan putting on a good deal more pressure here than he was in the first period right yesterday.
We'll watch the rising tide that comes out with 28 seconds, 30 seconds of riding time.
For Heffernan.
It's 532. lead for Heffernan in the black Iowa leads by 13 to 11 after five matches.
Six matches go an in-state wrestler, Bob Thompson of Ames for Iowa State.
John Heffernan, from a great wrestling high school in Ohio, sent Edwards there.
This is the third match of the night that's come down to the final seconds, really with the determination in doubt and the takedown needed to make something happen.
Thompson Won it on the leg, but he didn't have the possession.
Heffernan is able to get counter him.
They go out of bounds without a score.
There are only 4 seconds here to go.
It would appear that John Heffernan, with a takedown in the third period, has managed to bring this line to the Hawkeye column.
A tough little five foot three Heffernan over Thompson.
And so it's now 16 for Iowa and 11 for Iowa State.
You're seeing the Iowa coaches getting Don Finch ready to go out at £177 against Iowa State's Jim Nelson, a freshman against a senior, also Nelson, a senior from Ashland, Wisconsin, is having his best year for the Cyclones.
Don Finch, who had a slow start this year.
He's looked like a tough a real tough competitor his last two times out.
Well, I don't think he's scared of anybody.
I think he's loose and just kind of loosey goosey.
And to his advantage sometimes because he's got a lot of talent.
This is an important match, very important that Iowa would be favored in heavyweight Hammond pinned in the last time out, Volcker would probably be favored at £190, although the he and Simpson have traded pens the last year or so.
So this one is an important match.
Nice move by Finch, almost pancake Nelson that time.
But it was Nelson's original move.
And then you're right Vince Carty with the Underhook head to chin and a half.
And it looked like he was going to cranking, but Nelson was able to come out and face no score agreement at first period here.
But at £177 out, you said earlier another Iowa State, 177 pounder, Mike Kelly, wrestled against Arizona State's Jim Grassley and was injured in the match.
And he's he's been on one out of the lineup.
Nelson has wrestled all the way from 177 to 192 share.
Finch, a freshman from Brit with a Kelly has come from Nelson's got this high crotch drops down to a low single he dropped that scramble position just where they started.
Well Nelson can pull in and clear his head.
He has to pull the pin has got a lot to say about it.
With his spunky style and being able to stick the whizzer in right there, which he just did.
But here's there's the double leg because Nelson was able to cut off.
It's a good lesson right there is hanging on to a single leg.
As soon as he cut off to the double, he got his to you can't just sit.
And he came in, but you saw his arm come around, cut off for the two points.
Good scramble there with up one of those positions where each man has chances.
And Nelson came out with a two to nothing over Finch.
We talk about scrambles At the end, Finch was able to almost run out for an escape.
Nelson dropped down to the single legs.
Now they're scrambling to come out.
No point.
So far, it's still two zero.
NELSON And he has control failed.
It back to the center the first time and the first beat.
Finch won that one over.
Over.
NELSON 6 to 3.
He had two takedowns on counters go on.
Countermoves against Nelson here.
NELSON leads by two with his first takedown of the match.
And now Finch turns into it.
But the period ends, and there was quite a bit of writing time there for Nelson.
55 seconds for quite a bit of action, too.
There sure was.
Mid takedown, lots going on, ten takedowns for nine.
Iowa reversals and Near Falls are even are Each team has two near Falls.
Kreger had both of them at 151 them for a three point NEAR-FALL and the same was true with Mercury 134 for Iowa.
He the two pointer in a three pointer £177 Here Iowa leads Iowa State 16 to 11.
Nelson is underneath.
But coming out of this 1000 well, he does have Finch a little bit high here.
He has control the instep right there and he's trying to throw it over his back.
Course, Finch is trying to score back points, but here we have the situation that if Nelson grabs the head right here he did, which he's doing, he's going to come out and he has an escape.
So it works with Finch as well.
You know, some years it seems that the exciting moves on our series come in with the same move.
And this year it's been that it's been that head Graham with no underneath against the second leg right Well they've come at big time for whoever got him in the setup and this would be a big time for Iowa State if it happened for the cyclones three nothing is the score with a minute and 5 seconds to go.
Nelson over.
Finch.
Yeah.
Sorry.
You say Finch won the first meet between two Iowa leads here over Iowa State, 16 to 11.
Well, Finch is the Iowa High School product.
Among these two out of Iowa.
And Nelson comes to us from Wisconsin.
High crotch from Nelson.
Good solid move.
But he scored on it in the first period.
But this time, Finch appears to be in pretty good counter position.
He seemed to be that way in the first period, too.
So where it going to go?
Stalemate.
Oh, Don Neff has made a couple unpopular calls in the same position.
When Finch was looking to try to score his control.
But Nelson had the leg, but he called a stalemate instead of letting it go on.
Three nothing as a score in favor of the man in Red Nelson from Iowa State with 20 seconds to go.
In the second period, Iowa has a five point lead in the team score 16 to 11.
Nelson gets a single leg pickup and he's looking to cut across that double again.
He's got the double and he's got the chance.
Got two points now.
Don Neff gives him a two, makes it five.
Nothing.
All the difference between this match and the first one between these two at the end of two periods has been Nelson's ability to work offensively, which he wasn't able to do the first night.
He's dropped in a couple of times.
Nice five nothing Nelson leads So Finch, who's been so strong the last couple of meets, is going to be having a rally here with 2 minutes to go.
I think the key to Nelson's right here is to stay behind the arm so that Finch can't turn in, grab the legs, turn in, sit out, get behind, get in front of those arms and catch Nelson High.
So far, he's got control.
The risk that Finch reaches the head.
He's also approaching riding time.
Nelson is.
He has 57, 58, 59.
One minute later, Nelson's doing awful.
Nice job.
Very tactical match.
Doing a good job keeping his position.
And Finch is not going to get anywhere when he's looked like Tommy is flat on the mat a minute.
12, five.
Nothing.
Nelson Finch turns and reverses five to.
Well, he did get high and he gave up the two versus something worse like two and two or two and three.
He didn't want to give up that point.
So now Finch is going to have to work to turn his man.
The crowd and calmer Hawkeye Arena cheering to get him to tilt this man, put him over on his back again.
You come down to the last 30 seconds and an exciting man, Finch, working on the arm.
The referee, Don Neff, says that angle is tough on the shoulder.
Here is where Finch came out.
You see him?
Grab him for the leg.
Get.
He got it.
He's got the leg.
Before Nelson's able to secure it.
Now he gets the pressure and he is going to back, back in and get Nelson's hips down below his.
And that's the secret.
He's able to come out.
He got Nelson's hips lower than his own from the referee's start.
We have Don Finch on top trying to put Nelson on his back with 20 seconds to go leads.
Finch trails 5 to 2.
Nelson had two takedowns, one on each of the first two periods.
Finch reversed him here to start the third period, but hasn't been able to get him on his back.
And he has to get Nelson on his back in order to pull this match out and he won't do it.
That's a big win for Nelson.
It is very big right in time.
Of course, disappeared in that long ride at the end by Finch.
But they are now one and one this year after a tough series, 5 to 2 Nelson over Finch and at 16 to 14 again, the Hawks lead only two.
But I'll tell you, this puts a lot of pressure here.
This is a big match here.
You know what Volcker's looking for?
And he's looking for the pin again.
He put a pin on top of this.
If Let's just take a hypothetical.
All of a sudden, you've got a four point Iowa State lead going into the heavyweight match.
Well, I'll tell you, we all remember, too, what happened last year when Brooks Simpson was able to reverse Eric Walker in a tough position and pinned him.
And one of the biggest wins that people think about down here at Carver Hawkeye.
So these two rivals are at it again at £190, two Iowa High School products, two stand out, 190 pounders in a meeting That hasn't been decided yet.
Right.
And of course, Brooks Simpson can put it all the way for the Hawkeyes right here with a big win for himself.
And so, you know who's going to win that?
No, I know Iowa has scored only two more match points than Iowa State through.
The first eight matches 45 to 43.
But the difference was that Iowa got that fall down at £118.
That's a big one.
Jerry Brown's pin, Shaun White, he was leading 6 to 1 at the time.
Out of there, Brooks Simpson of Newton, Iowa, junior against Eric Voelker, senior from Dallas Center for Iowa State.
Voelker was ranked number one.
We haven't seen the the latest rankings yet.
Voelker was defeated by John Gunther.
These men have both been defeated by John Ginter of Arizona since then.
Arizona STATE You bet he's cut.
It's a good weight class and anything can happen.
We've seen that between these two young very great men at 45 to go first period.
You know they go Voelker went down low on the leg, ran into a rock, though Simpson was right there, stood and stood right up.
And it just keeps you under center.
I can hear the referee is Don Neff came in from Midvale, Utah, to handle this rematch between Iowa and Iowa State.
He was there for the first double leg by Voelker.
He changed off from a single but a wizard by Simpson say that, well, Booker came in on a strong double as a grip.
Simpson knew where he was.
He's on the edge of the mat and was able to avoid the takedown on Iowa bench, showing concern, as you might expect with a team score 16 to 14.
Hawks just broke it down the map down to one one tie up by Parker penalty put it down got now made it Simpson has got Volcker's chin under there that now holding on for dear life center back here in this group and again back to the center watch Eric Volcker's wrestled only 16 matches this year.
Yeah injuries in some respects having difficulty with weight and then does that work again over there?
Well, it all comes down to being ready at the right time of the year.
And we're approaching the right time of the year when everybody needs to be ready because they have a very tough assignment in the big eight, in the Big Ten before they get to the NCAA here.
Eric Walker in red and Brooke Simpson in black.
We have only 13 seconds to go.
In the first period, there is no score right?
First time these two met, it was a first period fall by Harper after he had a takedown and an escape.
And in going for the takedown the second time, he was able to catch Walker.
Now, there was a lot of focus traveled across the state from central Iowa to watch their son wrestle a Hawkeyes, and Audrey gave an odd vocal takedown.
Single first period ends without a score.
It's the second time we've had that happen in this meet.
The first time was when Rylan and Hamilton wrestle.
Walker starts on the bottom.
Simpson On the top right now.
Come here.
Now go.
Oh, Volcker switches little reversal switch.
He puts his hips into it.
He put it, got his hips out.
Really power and puts Simpson there for two points.
So they cut it to me 20, 25 years ago.
Doug still right now, still was 0.1 to nothing.
Volcker has the arm bar, you see.
Has he has Simpson flat.
Isn't Bargnani on what you like If he can get a Nelson which is what it looked like he was trying to force himself into.
There was just the possibility that he could turn center.
Now Brooks is up to his feet and out to the wide.
Eric Volcker two years ago was the national champion.
Last year he was defeated in an early round of the NCAA in an upset and wrestled all the way back to third.
Brooks Simpson has yet to place in the NCAA championship, but he has this year and next to do it 2 to 1 focus in about 16 to 14 Iowa.
That's the way it goes in this individual match and in the team single looking good looking good.
2 to 1, Volcker 25 seconds to go The big crowd, Carver, Hawkeye Arena.
We'll give you the attendance after this period is over 3000 go.
Nothing happened on the feet between these men in the first period in the back.
You're up.
6 seconds to go.
Yeah.
And 2 to 1.
Volcker You can expect the crowd to get into this one shortly.
Well, here we go into the final period, 2 to 1, and Simpson will start on the bottom line.
There's the crowd at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Today is a tendency 11,391, a good crowd, big crowd.
And among them, the over 60 Lions Club members from the Morning Sun, the kind of morning sun from your own hometown.
And a big day yesterday.
And their coach, John Segal, brought them to second place in the district.
Eric Fulker trying to get right in time.
Simpson trying to commit prevent this, but it's a long ways to go for that minute.
3738, 39 That's worth counting now.
Volker Trapp in the arm, a 2 to 1 score right now he's also approaching and something else very important out.
He didn't get it right in time.
That was very important.
Marian Simpson got out before Bowker could get right in time.
And so it's two two with about a minute and 15 to go.
This is very important.
Big match right here.
And it's just so predictable that it can come down to 190 between these two because of the last few matches they've had.
The crowd is into it.
Doug Simpson of Iowa has two escapes.
Voelker of Iowa State got a reversal at the beginning of the second period.
Now Volker is in on the leg and he gets the takedown.
His toes are in and he leads 4 to 2 with 39 seconds to go.
Very good sense of presence for Erik Croker.
We knew where he was right here.
He drops in on that high crotch right here.
He's right where he is, the black and yellow.
He wants his toes in the yellow.
And you see he has it with control and now he has right riding time.
So he's actually leading by three and flat.
And Simpson with 27 seconds to go a real tough match Volker showing his all American in the last period when he had to do it and we have 10 seconds to go 4 to 2 Simpson rolls but is unable to come out.
And there it is with riding time.
It's a to two victory for Erik Walker.
And now look up on the scoreboard and you'll see that the score is 17 to 16 in favor of Iowa State.
And it's coming down for the heavyweight men.
How many times has this happen in Iowa and Iowa State?
I don't think a lot of people expected it to come down to heavyweight today, but it did well, tell him, tell them what I said in the middle before you go.
He said it's going to come down to heavyweight.
Oh, let's not call this.
Let's let the crowd call this one duck.
Okay.
Andy Hammond ranked number six, wanted a fall in the first period against Christian Olson the last time out.
And he definitely is favorite He's 26 and for can Olson is seven and 12 but connection has been kind of tough lately he's he's dangerous he can throw and although Hammond is definitely favored, we've seen things happen here before.
I got to say hi right now to someone who's been a big part of Iowa wrestling.
One of his wrestlers from Hillsdale, Oregon, came in, the former coach at Cedar Rapids, Perry run James said a special high to me to be one of his wrestlers who wrestles for Buena Vista.
He's going to get a tape of this match.
Hi, Ron James.
You're seeing a great match.
Andy Hammond in the Black against Chris Olson in the Red.
Hammond would love to get in there, get under the arms.
He wants to have a double underhook and then foot sweeping.
That's what he did in Ames.
Here comes a high crotch move by hammer and wait for the bell right through the back.
And it is.
Yeah, there he is with his family and his girlfriend.
He said it was his sister.
That's his girlfriend right there.
And they're very happy group.
Well.
Oh, Andy, Heaven can join the ranks of wrestlers who've gone through Iowa.
Iowa State meets who said they want to meet It went down to them and they ever ready.
And so Andy, having wins on a fall in 48 seconds.
Let's look at it again.
Look at this high crotch right here.
Gets the hips underneath him.
Let's see and try to cross the opposite arm right down to the mat, shoulders to the mat.
Wonderful execution by Andy Hammond and the fall right there, cut oats and came up with his up like a bloody lip or a bloody mouth there.
And I think he got stopped just for a second.
But Hammond had him on his back and won this thing for the Hawkeyes over Iowa State 22 to 17.
There you see the final score again.
It was a tough match all the way.
And although it started out with Iowa winning the first three matches in big quick order, it looked like it was going to be maybe a steamroller today for the Hawks and the way things started out, especially with it here, Carver Hawkeye Arena, because of There was a pin by Terry Brandes over Shaun White, and then there was a 12 to 5 win almost a major by Tom Brandes over.
Gary McCall.
He made it look easy.
Joe McCarthy had a major decision against Mike Marino.
I don't know what you thought at that time, but even with the strong Iowa State people coming up ahead, it looked like Iowa might really steamroller.
But then the hawks had a little trouble.
Jeff Gibbons won a one point match for the big national psycho, Eric Pearson, then ten Krieger, who doesn't let anybody beat him these days, won a technical foul over Doug Stryker.
Another tough match to the one Steve Hamilton over Mark Riley and Iowa State was suddenly three points behind.
Well, John Heffernan had a tough match today to win 5 to 3.
I think that did a lot for the cyclones right there.
How well Bobby Thompson stayed in bed at 177.
This was a reversal from a match in the first eight.
Jim Nelson beat Don Finch today, five 2 to 1 of the most impressive matches for him this year that Eric Walker, with that last period, rallied Brooke Simpson 5 to 2 in the game to heavyweight.
Well, it's just one of several great matches this year.
We had all three.
We didn't have a dollar.
No.
Some years we had a 43 to 3 and things like that.
We've enjoyed it this year on college wrestling because we've had these good teams, right?
Great teams and terrific stars.
But it's great fun to be with you.
Well, it's great fun to be with you.
And it always makes Doug Griffin a lot happier when we have exciting.
Yeah, we have a we have a few people that we want to thank here if I get the list.
So I make sure I don't forget anybody's names along the way.
People who've been awfully good to us at the University of Northern Iowa and Iowa State and the University of Iowa here at Carver Hawkeye Arena, for instance, Bob Elliott, the athletic director, and Larry Bruner, his assistant.
Rick Clapp, director of Promotions.
Phil Hatty, who is the wrestling sports information director.
Dale Gursky, who's the facilities manager at Carver.
Kelly Gray is assistant manager.
And then Dan Gable, of course, what you're seeing right there and I'm sure he's excited about the Nationals in the Big Ten's coming up, T.J. Iowa State Max Jurich, athletic director, and Dave Cox, assistant A.D. Tom Purcell, Sports Information Wrestling.
Randy Baumeister of Helton and Jim Gibbons and his staff then and you and I, Bob Bowls B, Ed and Kevin K and wrestling sports information director, the dome manager up there, Jim Begley and Dave Coors and Don Briggs and his and his staff.
And we aren't through with wrestling at we know we're really looking forward to that high school meet this next week.
The best high school not only in the state, it's the best high school wrestling in the nation.
And we're really looking forward to it.
And that'll be next Saturday night starting at 630.
We're going to have that for you live.
Tim and I will be there.
So again, that to score tonight between Iowa and Iowa State was 22 for the hawks and 17 for the cyclones.
And it ended at heavyweight the way we I guess the way we like to see it.
Do we really hope you enjoyed this 13 series of college wrestling meets this year on Iowa Public Television and you'll join us then Saturday for the high school meet starting at 630 high school championships.
