It's college wrestling today from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
Iowa Public Television presents an intrastate showdown between the second ranked Iowa State cyclones and the ninth ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Tim Johnson and welcome to our season debut of college wrestling, our 29th season on Iowa Public television.
I'm pleased to welcome my broadcast partner, Hall of Famer Dan Gable and coached the Iowa State meets always a classic today the number two ranked Iowa State versus number nine ranked Iowa.
Well, I was not used to being number ranked very often.
And so they're looking to move their way up.
And of course, Iowa State can't move up that fast.
So they have to knock off Oklahoma State first.
But we'll see what happens, though.
Iowa State was up last year as they snapped the 30 match win streak for Iowa.
It was a hard fought match all the way down to £165 this way.
And the big spirit you were talking about a of them.
Look at this.
Look at this.
Look at this.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.
Hey, Penny.
Well, it's over.
It's over.
He took it right to it.
Fell through the half.
It's over, boys.
Barcelona goes down in history.
Well, Iowa State, that was a big, big win for him.
And the big guy for Iowa State, Bobby Douglas in his 13th season.
Well, you know, Pascal was going to start this meet out again right where they left off.
But Bobby Douglas is definitely he's almost like a coach of the year.
Every year he just gets involved with international wrestling.
He he helped coach Kael Sanders into an Olympic gold medal.
You know, he just he's been around.
He's almost an institution in our sport.
So he just he's got a passion like I do.
Well, Iowa State with a young team last year they had a disappointing ninth place finish in the NCAA, but they have four returning All-Americans, well, with Gallic and Palsson and Baccus and Coleman, you know, those places there aren't quite up there.
So that's why they're trying to get him up to first, second and third.
So they have a good nucleus.
The Iowa program is led by a former national champion of yours, coach, a three time national champion, Jimmy Zaleski.
In his eighth season, Coach Zaleski really had kind of a difficult season at the beginning.
Last year they were ranked low and all of a sudden he ends up being coach of the year, Big Ten champions number two in the country.
So he really, you know, did a great job when it counted.
Well, they're one to know this year the Iowa Hawkeyes are but they have four true freshman in the lineup.
Well we got Alex the surface from Indiana, Luke Lofthouse from Utah, Dane Pate from Iowa, and Matt Fields from Iowa.
So, yeah, they're young.
Also joining us this year, my brother broadcast partner, NCAA champion wrestler and coach Jim Gibbons.
Well, I'll tell you what, I get a big kick out of hearing you guys talk about the Hawkeyes inexperience with Iowa State's experience.
But this match we're standing on today, guys, is paved with national champions and all Americans who've come in here and gotten beat by expect inexperienced Hawkeyes.
But the feature match tonight is the £184 between two ranked guys at 184 for Iowa State is Kurt Baccus.
And Kurt Baccus is a fluid wrestler here.
Here you see him in.
Yes, last year's dual meet here, getting a big inside trip.
He just operates in space a lot of times.
Makes you relax.
Here he comes in a drive through on a good shot here.
Now you see him here in more fluid, dropping back into the counter shot.
But one of Iowa State's really talented big man, and it doesn't hurt him at all.
He's working out with Carl Sanderson in the wrestling room here.
But now Paul Bradley.
Paul operates in the vectors.
He keeps great position out there.
Here you see him in that same match, a close toward a three match last year that went Bradley's are certainly back his way in here you see him in the Iowa state of Iowa.
You and I beat last year driving through and getting the points so big feature matchup but 184.
Let's look at tonight's matchups at 174.
It's going to be lot a Lofthouse Baccus and Bradley at 84, Smith and probably Pape at 97 heavyweight Coleman Fields, Nakamura and Magnani it at 125.
Moving on to the back half and Sunderland got Lennox a rematch here from high school days gala concerts this Kip and Justis Palsson and Johnston at the start and the meet Paulson probably versus Mark Perry.
Let's get her started Tim well let's get it started.
And we have Mike Allen as the official with us today.
Always an interesting official right?
And absolutely he'll break the stalemate, keeps the action going.
And it's kind of interesting that Penn's Alonzo is the guy that won this meet last year and he started it off.
There he is just like he ended it.
So we'll see what happens.
Nick Pass, L.A., a senior from New Lenox, Illinois, Providence High School, going up against the freshman from Avon, Utah.
Luke Lofthouse, one of the first of four true freshmen on the mat here at Carver Arena for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
While Luke actually had his debut last week against Arizona State.
And he came out, he got taken down like this early on.
And in fact, he got taken down again.
And then he came on himself to the delight of the crowd.
So right now it's a very similar now he's he's resting a little bit more experienced wrestling right here.
There's that early stalemate, you know, or one of the four returning All-Americans for Iowa State.
Can you let me know when you said breakdown?
Okay, you're set.
You come down.
Rep Positano out to an early start to lead with a takedown on top of Luke Loftis.
You know, he's No.
One there.
His name's Lofthouse.
He got an escape.
Actually, that's that's pretty big, that he can keep himself in a position to be able to keep the activity going.
Once.
Sometimes when you're on the bottom getting control, you really don't get yourself a chance to wrestle and do what you can do better, especially with the young guy.
I was really surprised here that Positano let him go down.
It looked like he wasn't really contesting in there.
It was it was not really a total let go, but it was like he maybe could have just a little bit of running back now.
Yeah, I'm surprised as well with it.
Maybe he's pretty confident.
That was pretty quick.
He had.
That's right.
Look, another one turns into a single leg and down for two, and that's exactly why he let him go.
4 to 1 in favor of the cyclone Nick, Pass, L.A., Been through the wars.
He's a young wrestler that took some hits early on right here.
He really is early on.
But, you know, this is the position that we saw Barcelona work in last year.
You have to think that the Iowa coaches are saying, hey, don't get sucked back into this position.
Don't let him spread you out.
Barcelona was totally comfortable in here.
And I like what his legs are.
He's got power legs in right now with his basically his belt buckle up high in the back still above the waistline.
Totally in control here.
Right.
Right.
There's only one coaching strategy that I could see here if I was the the Hawkeye right now, you know, you got to stay off your back, which right now, you know, he's doing a fairly good job, but he is getting a little bit out of position there.
You know, he's got to look for like being able to bounce back as the match goes along.
But he's in trouble right here.
He really is.
He's pretty flexible, looked like.
So he didn't go over there, whereas last year he went right over.
But he had more of a rolling type situation.
This is more of a power half here, but it looks how he gets off to the side right here.
Now he's going to pop his hips in.
He's looking for it.
Looking for what do you want the maple leaf action here?
And he got just got it.
He looks like he's there right now, but he's just not getting the same drawback.
And and in fact, he's.
Yeah.
So so far this whole period it's been Iowa State Now, Lofthouse did a nice job of fighting off and getting to his base right there.
He was in one of those situations where really Positano was waiting for him to make a move that he was going to pop his hips in and take him to his back.
You're looking at a true freshman, Luke Lofthouse, out of Avon, Utah Mountain Crest High School, where he was a three time state champion.
But he's up against all-American Nick Pass.
Alonzo Love from Iowa State, who did not get back points there.
He had one count and he almost had an escape, but he passed, not did a good job of staying behind the arm.
Staying right there.
Whoa.
That was close.
Oh, big, big.
No point, though, for Josh, for both sides.
Actually.
You read the first to block the dial.
Wow.
So went right back after it here.
That's you know, I like that.
I do, too.
I like that curry choosing where he's strong.
Well, he's not necessarily strong there, but I'm telling you, he's just he's just he knows he needs to score some points.
And that's a place that he feels that maybe he almost got out, felt a little right towards the end period.
There needs to a lot of weight forward here.
And you know, if you're going to escape, somebody's got to get him over your arms and keep him back, keep your hips underneath you.
You see how he sets that up?
He gets a lot of the weight in the hands, like you mentioned here.
And I'm not sure what referees call about being careful a little bit.
Good technique here.
Great technique, Excellent technique there.
Grab the instep.
All right.
Pop his hips out.
Was able to get the baseline off to the side.
Well, well, Lofthouse is coming into him, reaching pretty high.
I mean, that shot's there right away, but it's just a matter of whether one guy can start to take him coming back a little bit.
And it was a great, great head shot there by Luke Lofthouse.
But he is going to have a great job to counter by Lonzo.
And actually he's got a great ol locked up.
It's got to create a lock, but he's got the leg lock.
That's why they gave it to him.
That's a little bit of a tough call, but all right.
It looks like control certainly has control.
Well, that makes the score 6 to 2 in favor of Barcelona.
That was a big take.
Big on if the fans didn't like it, of course.
Well, the move was an excellent look.
I guess.
Look, it's initiated by Barcelona, so, hey, this could be you know, this is what the fans want to see right now.
A little bit of a weakness somewhere.
Well, time out for the Iowa State wrestler Nick Class.
Alonzo Lofthouse came out here to fight here in the second period.
He got dominated in the in the top position goes right back into the down position here.
And and really, it looks to me, if you look both of them stood up next to each other.
You looked at Barcelona.
He looks a little bit, right?
Yeah, a little drawn.
Exactly.
But he's not he's not even at his regular weight up the weight here.
But, you know, it's just one of those things.
Actually.
Lofthouse wrestled 189 in high school last year, and he's at 74 right now.
But he was more of a stocky guy.
He had the weight to lose and he didn't get it correctly.
And he's he's making weight fairly easy.
There's Bobby Douglas in his 13th season at Iowa State University.
And we're getting ready.
And here we go.
50 seconds left in the second period plus L.A. on top after scoring.
Yeah, out hours make you score 6 to 3 in favor of Barcelona here.
He escaped for Lofthouse with the help of the last shot.
Just wasn't a shot.
But he didn't go to the finish.
There's another good shot by this one.
Good.
Coming up.
Nice is the critical points here.
Yeah.
No match.
You know where to go deep here.
She's trying to get elbow deep around the ankle up.
Just grabs the instep.
Well, put us in a nice job.
A hand fighting there, but let go of it.
You can't die for her.
Yeah.
When you go for to put your legs together and a lot of people see the edge of the mat and they die towards the end.
That's the man.
A lot of time now right there.
I mean, it seems like Lofthouse knew what was going on and put his leg on top of him and didn't let him up.
That's interesting.
So they called they called stalling on Barcelona for not coming up.
Yeah, but he really wasn't able to come up because Out knew the situation.
I'm impressed with Lofthouse as a true freshman.
Well, 14 seconds.
You know, if he wants to win the match, he has to get out these 14 seconds.
He's got to be up to his feet with hand control and they'll calling for stalling there if he hangs there, if he hangs there, they're going to call him.
He's going to give it he had to give it because he was going to get called that kept him in the match right there.
Oh 8 to 4 at the end of the second period, going into third period.
Castellano down the stretch, we're talking about a senior versus a freshman here.
He's going to let him go, I believe it was a takedown.
And here's here's what we're talking about.
He's got the far ankle look at here.
Lofthouse basically basically spreads him out here.
Look at this.
He's he's oh, my game.
The one I thought he was calling for.
Stalling is a position where Lofthouse has to score.
Look at this.
Look at this.
Look at this, guys.
He's fighting this still.
But if he gives it to if he gets his takedown, I don't know.
He's got one little hand there.
He's not doing a good job of clearing his leg.
I can tell you that.
He's got to get it back further, get the hand off the leg.
Pozuelo is doing a tremendous job of hanging on there.
He wasted about 20 seconds.
He's dead.
I think.
Yeah, I'm not sure.
You know, he went down pretty easy.
You see the score?
Ten two six in favor of Iowa State Pass Alonzo, but locked out.
Come on.
Look at that.
Back.
Oh, he's got that good corner cut.
He's going to score again.
It doesn't work anymore.
I believe.
I believe has the one.
Oh oh, I don't know about that one.
I tell you what, when you the legs lock right there, that's a rule.
That's usually two points.
But Oh, look, I think that's what he's going to call the end.
He's been more stalemate.
He's not getting those.
No, no.
I thought he was holding a warning there.
He's not getting that.
He get us because he's looking tired.
Yes, exactly.
He I think he is tired, but oh, boy, he's he's tired.
But he can if he can look at this look, he's got a good hip action, good hip, but he's got to crawl back, break the hand.
Just 20, 30 seconds is going to be wasted by just the hands.
And that's going to give him the victory.
You know, he's going to he's going to have to arm turkey, me, put him on his back or put him on his back some way to get the points back to just poise from the senior base.
Absolutely.
Boys from the senior place, he's up basically 11 six on the score right now.
He's 30 seconds to go throw the ball.
We're the first match of the Iowa State.
Meet £174.
It's Nick Pastrana from Iowa State leading Iowa's Lofthouse ten that thick.
And there's only 25 seconds left, locked out, locked house, trying to make a comeback.
He might have thought I going to pin it, but he didn't.
He fell over backward only then.
I don't think so.
Well, he did it.
What do you think?
This is crazy, man.
Look at this.
He's going to win the match, no doubt.
You know, he took off the pace was all his big mental win there.
Actually, that was a big time.
Every match is a big one.
Yeah.
Big win for Pats Illinois State.
Yeah, big win.
Just the boys, the scene.
There you go.
I would fade out in front three.
Oh, with Castellano walking off the mat.
Hard fought victory holding on there you're looking at him Went out in front, came back locked out, came back to make it close.
But Castellano takes the Cyclones out in front Three out that good match Where to get started?
Yeah.
You know what though again They just had the wins.
Yeah, okay.
You just don't get the match preparation time for that first match.
Well, you're exactly right here.
You got a guy moving up the way he should do.
So it doesn't matter.
Doesn't matter.
Doesn't matter.
Yeah.
Yeah.
There's not enough time there you need.
That's why you're saying it's a big win when it really comes down to it.
I mean, the elements that are involved tonight.
A win is a win, right?
Absolutely.
Every match A wins a win here today and pass along came out, took it to him on his feet, came back on a couple of situations from defensive point of view and wasted a lot of match time during that match.
So he did a good job of wrestling when he was tired.
Yeah, he didn't, particularly when he was tired.
Here we have 184, one of the featured matches to all Americans going at it.
Bradley Paul Bradley from Iowa up against Curt Backus from Iowa State.
Bradley in on a single here's that single possession here and look at Baccus.
Oh I don't know what he did there.
Oh, but Backus gave him the position.
I don't think he realized what was going on that allowed him to duck all the way around behind.
Bradley was looking for the far ankle.
And here's that.
Inside position.
Oh, yes.
Come right back.
A nice change off.
Nice answer.
Yeah.
Hey, there's some action going on here, guys.
The big guys are giving us a treat here in three, three score.
Well, that's what that last match ended up score wise.
11 date with riding all 12, eight, 12, eight.
And we've got it three three here in the first period, early stages, one minute, not even gone yet at £184.
It's the second match of the big Iowa state Iowa meet.
I'm Tim Johnson along with Dan Gable Jim Gibbons for the big Iowa Iowa state dual meet here in Carteret Hawkeye Arena.
This is great.
These two guys are going to give us a show here.
Might be quite a bit of fighting for position in the beginning, but their scrambles are going to just be awesome.
Bradley And Iowa boy back us out of New Jersey.
Blair Academy.
Bradley from South team South team of high school.
Look at this.
Good shot.
Good shot.
Emily gets it gets him rolling here.
Got a little bit out of position not to start roll, but he comes up in the air to be in pretty good shape.
There usually right here.
Yeah.
Bradley's going a pretty good job.
He's going to move that ankle.
Excellent job here in Iowa.
Also comes up, he comes up.
I'm not sure if he hangs on the leg.
It'll be two points.
He's got to come up in the air with it.
Bradley needs to come up in the air in the back as Hawks step back and try to show control.
There is close he looks the near leg what she's done right there that was there he hooked Bradley's right leg.
That was the two points two points for takedown crowd control.
Any time you take the man down to the mat and show control from a neutral position, that's two points.
And we've had three takedowns here in the first period in the first 2 minutes.
Well, right now, Bradley shows a little sign of hanging on the bottom, which, you know, he's not going to win the match by hanging on the bottom here.
He's going to have to get out.
And he didn't even get out there.
Well, he looked like he had a chance to get out back.
It stayed with him real tough.
Right now, so much of top wrestling is your footwork.
And that was a good example of back that's just following in here with his feet, not trying to suck him in with his arms, but just staying with him, with his feet.
It's heating up in here.
I seen Cale over there.
Cale Sanders just took off his sport coach.
You know, after that first match, I imagine, you know, fir was flying a little bit there and this is same way.
This is good wrestling, you guys, you still got your spark, go down there.
Yeah, but I'm shut down.
I don't mind sweat.
Bradley having a difficult time getting his hips away.
Last week, Arizona State, you know, he hung out on the bottom.
Get down there.
He gets a one point escape for Bradley, makes the score 5 to 4.
Bradley has one takedown and two escapes back offense to take down in one escape.
He's got a one point advantage.
Second match of the Iowa Iowa State meet with Iowa State out in front three oh after half, Delano beat Lofthouse at 174 to start the meet A little surprised by that shot there.
There's always a way long ways away and nothing really set up compared to what we've seen.
And Bradley, I thought could have hustled there, backed up and went for a goal behind.
But I don't know, Grasshopper.
Look at the clock a little bit.
But you know, that kid's looks like he's enjoying wrestling right here, right now.
Yeah, you can tell.
You know, we're past Illinois was a little bit flushed before.
Bradley looks a little flushed in that situation.
Oh, you see?
Is carrying a lot of weight, You know, keep him out wide here.
But what a great period there by for our choice.
There's the new assistant for Iowa State.
Dan brought him up.
That's Carl Sanderson, Olympic gold medalist, fresh now Olympic gold medalist in Athens.
Okay, you're in between.
Come down.
Chris Bowen on Bobby Douglas.
The brain trust of the Iowa State cycling program ranked number two in the nation at this point.
Well, we're coming live to you from Carver Hawkeye Arena, Iowa.
Iowa State.
See here with Bradley's stance position here.
He's pretty wide.
He's pretty difficult to get a deep penetrating shot out of that wide.
Both athletes moving to a wide stance.
But Marcus is looked to be a little bit more active in the match.
Now he's moving the head and that's what we saw him do so well last year at the national tournament.
Here's the guy his head and steps up in.
Look at that.
Here's where that funkiness Oh, this is going to be some double leg.
Who came back?
Oh, man, He that's where that was great Counter wrestling there.
Excellent.
And up.
Bradley actually lost the takedown to Jones by keeping his hips away.
That's a tough, tough call right there.
They're not going to get it.
They're not going to get it.
Yeah, you noticed Bradley's getting extended quite a bit.
Well, he has to try to extend himself to get that back.
This is far leg, which is so far away.
He's got particularly doing the splits he's on, trying to get to that far ankle and it's just not there.
But if your hips are not under you have no power.
Right?
That's where he lost him right there.
He had a good chance to finish.
That was the first time in the match, though.
We've seen Bradley really try to move the head from the tie up position.
He's got a collar tie now.
He's not moving the head looking Again, a go go behind that opportunity for Bradley that was missed.
Well, I think it's missed because Bradley looks like he's like slow and down.
Yeah, right now.
Looks a little warning, trying to pick his pick and choose when he wants to go.
But you start with your state wide open match here.
30 seconds left.
One of these I have feet that are nimble.
The other half feet that look like cement.
Yeah, well, that's just his style here.
He doesn't really look at that.
And that's been worn here.
We'll see how he answers this with 23 seconds in the period.
But you have it when Bradley starts moving the head.
Work on the head.
That's where he's got his best opportunities.
And Baccus has really beat them, too, by taking the shot before he's been able to work the head.
And he's focused on the clock a little bit too much.
You know, you've got to be focused on your wrestling.
You know, the clock will take care of itself.
Right?
5 seconds left.
In the second period, the score, 6 to 4 in favor of this from Iowa State.
And that's where we are.
Iowa State Park ahead here, 6 to 4.
And Bradley picks down to begin the third period, gets the opportunity to either narrow the gap or tie it up.
There's coach still asking to get down, trying to get his first win of the match, losing the first one at 174 past L.A. Lofthouse said, Go your way.
Iowa State leads three.
Oh, I think both these guys are a little bit tired, too, just because of the fact that the our way in and and not really getting to eat much.
You know, you just can't you just can't eat that much in an hour.
Yeah.
I think where you're seeing that Dan is in the writing both of athletes are really haven't tried to write the other down single leg attempt good hips by a good shot by Bradley He's got the headset extended though Yeah good defense right now Marcus has got the head up is it's his opportunity to score right here and those are the arms Ben Bradley reacted pretty well that time he faced it.
That time he moved.
Plus I think it was a lot slipperier now.
Yeah.
6 to 5 back is from Iowa State in the red and gold there versus Bradley from Iowa 6 to 5 in favor of the fight for the Hawkeyes.
This is a real crucial match to get back in.
Mike Allen did an excellent job of calling that he call what Backus is doing there.
He basically recognized he was pushing off and called him for it didn't really mean it's no call, but he just said, I'm not going to give you that staff call.
You just push him.
He got extended again, great setup, great hips, did not keep his hips under him.
Now he reached up with his arm, arms aren't going to pull guys hips and your hips have to be under you.
Too much arms, not enough drive, too much weight on top of him.
No weight should be on top of you when you drive.
Well, that's how you that's why you skied people, right?
That's true.
There was no weight there.
There was no weight.
When you're driving into what?
We're listening to Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons talking about old time wrestling, not old time, both of them national champion wrestlers.
Talk about Dan talking about Jim.
Yeah, that's one of the great Iowa State wrestlers.
And what he did to win.
Well, he picked people up like there was not there was no weight on them.
Look at that.
Look at that scramble guy who has his head up is going to win the scramble.
That's to Bradley does.
He's got it right in 25 seconds, big 25 seconds.
He's been worn.
He's on his leg.
I believe he'll call him.
They'll call him.
They'll call him.
You don't get off and they'll call him, which he did.
He call him verbally.
He gave him a chance.
He's got him right himself.
Well, they call for Stalin.
Oh, he might call it for Stalin.
They could very well.
Yeah, but he won't.
He knows better.
Well, I'll tell you what.
Bradley stayed in.
It gave himself a chance.
Yeah.
You wiggle the guy a little more in the end.
I wouldn't want to call it, you know, I wouldn't want to say because he's been warned.
Now you're not going to get to make it look better.
Now, this was in Hilton.
I think he might get the call against it.
Yeah, but, you know, get back is didn't have much emotion there.
He didn't have any bones with his hips and build base.
It's interesting, though, that that shot was taken by back has had the lead took that space double and gave it up Bradley an opportunity to win the match ties it up three three Iowa State Iowa three three after the first two now we're at 197.
Trevor Smith for the Hawkeyes, I mean for Iowa State.
Hey, what's happening?
And for Iowa?
Dane Pape This is a big match for Dane Pace.
Started last week, got pinned in his first match out.
And you know, he's right, guys, to get a freshman to make some advancement, you're going to have to have a pretty good performance.
Another two true freshman in the lineup for Iowa, Dane Pape, out of McCook at Iowa, going up against Trevor Smith, a senior out of Longview, Washington.
Well, people give you everything he has in the early stages of the match here.
I think watching his matches in the state high school wrestling tournament flat on the mat carried a little bit of weight for the weight class, but a little shorter.
But right here he was at 215, right?
Yeah, he's at 215 now.
He's down to 97.
Looks a little better.
Cory Turner is a two time state runner up for McCook today.
We're ready, guys.
Smith has a lot of experience here.
He did a lot of wrestling last year for the Cyclones Driver.
I tell you what, those first two weight classes they got right after it in there, that's what wrestling is all about.
Well, both drivers being Iowa wrestler.
Yeah.
And they both did what they had to do to make the score 3 to 3.
I mean, two wins a win and and both teams now benefiting from one of those wins.
Oh, whoa.
That's pretty good for a freshman.
You know, getting up there.
We'll wrap them up a little bit by game paper.
I was talking about being excited.
He looks excited to be out there.
Yeah, definitely.
I've been watching him work out a little bit.
He gives guys goals in the practice.
All I know he's he's a good set of his.
And so we're talking, we're acting.
You know, our voices are acting a little surprised.
We talk about true freshman here and it hasn't happened maybe ever that the Hawkeyes have put four true freshmen on the mat, especially in an Iowa state meet and a redshirt freshman.
So there's five freshmen out.
Half your team are freshmen.
A couple others transferred in, newcomers.
I was I was only got three in the lineup that's been in it before this year.
Yeah.
Those transfers I remember I thought that you looked at the lineups what they be the next year and all of a sudden Danny would have a transfer like a Tommy Ryan or, you know, somebody like that coming in that, that Lord I.
Wasn't he an all-American for Syracuse?
I don't think he was there, but all-American.
But he became an all time all-American.
He was darn good.
Yeah.
With this run, you scoring called it.
I mean, a warning given to Trevor Schmidt from Iowa State by Mike Allen, referee from Waterloo, one of the nation's top referees, been around for a long time.
And he he makes you wrestle.
As Dan talked about it earlier, Smith has given up for Iowa State's given up that underhook on that side.
See that he likes to control with that left side of the underhook you're pushing.
Well, you know, he's got a brother Cole that's on the team.
I had a knee surgery.
I'm a Kolkata knight and it'll be a factor probably next semester.
It was at 165 last year.
I believe he's at 157 this year where Joe Johnston's already doing a good job.
And well, you'd have to say in this match so far, Pape is going to control the Middle.
Well, I'll tell you, you know, the important thing with Coach Solecki this year is making sure that the people that are in there keep their confidence and stay in there and battle.
And that's what he's looking for.
And if he gets that and I think he's done an excellent job.
The other thing, he's got new coaches this year, too.
You know, we hadn't talked about that much yet, but, you know, he's got Steiner and he's got Hartung and, you know, Minnesota and they've been on top before, right?
So Cliff Moore is in there and Mike DeRose, administrative assistant.
So he's got like five, four or five new guys in there that I think are working pretty well together there.
You're looking at the Iowa bench.
Troy Steiner, NCAA champion for Dan Gable and Tim Hartung and Mike Saddiq, my exotics, the volunteer coaches here.
That's the end of the first period.
There's no score for Iowa State.
Got the choice.
They deferred to Iowa, took the choice and chose down for this time.
This is a match favored for Iowa State, actually.
Yeah.
I don't think you have to favor almost a situation with a paper coming out here.
But really with the blood time out, you give up a chance to contribute, you know, get his thoughts together here, gets a little bit of flow so you can't control the blood thing.
They get as much time as they need to Exactly.
Take care of the blood.
I mean, it's not like he has, you know, controlled time for injury.
You're looking at Trevor Smith there, the senior out of Longview, Washington.
I think they put Iowa State back ahead.
That favors the freshman, though.
You know, they could take this thing in small increments here with blood time.
Well, look, Rick, at the start of the second period, score zero zero.
Wow.
Okay.
Well, that was pretty darn good.
That's ill run for that we saw.
Yeah, but I didn't do any good.
Ended up back down.
I mean, it's good action.
Yeah, definitely.
Oh nine lock right there.
Yeah.
I don't want to get any luck with it.
Rip it off.
You know the care for that.
Yeah.
Or the forces go.
Yeah.
I had to let that go for good.
Just that ankle there.
It makes it a little difficult.
Smith looks to be in pretty good control here.
We guys, be careful.
Well, that's what that's twisted like that, though.
That's really tough.
Let's.
This is where it got in trouble against Arizona State on the bottom last time.
So now they both have a warning.
Then Armageddon at three nine.
So I don't know about that.
He's just getting manhandled.
What do you really mean?
I just don't think he's now he's presenting himself.
He got back up.
But you get in that position, I promise you, put somebody in there and they're not going to get up right away.
Now, he gave me that leg again.
He's on his back.
There's big points.
Big points.
Oh, oh oh vertical points right there.
And this is we got at least a three point NEARFALL, if not a pin.
But he's not going doesn't look like he's going to pin him.
But it's a good ride, isn't it?
This is where you see the freshmen really having a difficult time is in the down position.
Just so Tom, be careful.
Well, he didn't have his hips under him at all.
Now, you know, I don't care where you go now.
They go right back to it.
If your hips aren't under you, you're in trouble.
Once you've gone over once with, it is going to be that much easier.
Get out of that.
Whatever Coach Zaleski should be coaching over there, yelling to get to his feet needs to get to his feet.
That's where he needs to get.
He lost three points there.
Never was doing a good job.
Coach Bone on Sanderson.
Tell him to get the same thing.
He's got something going.
Going.
Well, keep it going.
18 seconds left.
In the second period, the top man is gone.
Wow.
Good hustle by Pape.
Psychological points there.
Yeah.
Iowa State Trevor Smith out in front 3 to 1 on the strength of a three point NEAR-FALL.
Now he will go down in the third period.
There's Jim Zaleski.
Mike, that Iowa state.
Yes.
Let's go down to I would say out of the box you get down.
Well, I think if Mapes opportunity to get back in this match probably to cut in to look for something up top.
He's got a lot of running time against him, too.
145 Yeah.
So an escape here, basically 5 to 1.
So he's got to go up top.
He's going to get in the match.
And I'm interested that this is a position in the match for Smith.
If he's looking to get better here, he's got to go after him.
He's got to look for extra points here.
Well, he made a shot, but is a little bit high there right now.
What Jim means by up top is Pate needs to come in and have something like a four or five point move to take down and back point.
And you'll know he needs his position to do that.
It looks like he's a left handed thrower.
Dan and I always thought that those guys were a little bit more dangerous, so he likes to work with that left handed Underhook I right now he's just kind of camping out, not going for it.
That's right there, left handed.
Underhook.
We'll see what he has from it.
Oh, drove through real nice.
Smith did head up in the game too much.
Yeah, getting too much on that on that shot viewpoint Might take their thinking not to be thinking, major, but we're talking about the Iowa State coaches encouraging Trevor Smith to use something to get extra points at 6 to 1, 7 to 1 with riding time.
So he's only two points away from a major decision that he probably does do the same thing he did last time, keeping forward and keep breaking down.
But, you know, crank him over that leg.
Absolutely.
It keeps the match under control.
Really does doesn't give him a chance to hit that big move.
We talked about what you trying to break him down?
And, you know, this is one position, I believe that when you talk about freshman right out of high school, that this is one position that they probably have the most difficult to.
Yeah, they do.
They've never been challenger the stud of their high school and they they obviously were competitive nationally that was going to be in these rooms and they never get challenged here until they meet somebody four or five years older than them.
They can go ahead and just crank them over.
And Smith put an incredible pressure on him.
Now, he'd probably want to let it go there.
Yeah, and they're talking about it.
The Iowa State coaches are, but they're not they're not talking as fast as you.
This thought.
They're darn well was capable.
You had Paige actually try it.
He's going get another stall call again.
So he's keeping away too much weight for he's not building the base.
He's thinking about just getting to him.
At least he's got some work to do there to get the frame of mind up, especially with the first year freshman as you go job by Trevor Smith of letting the official know that there's nothing going on there.
So with all the stalling calls, the penalty calls there took the score to 9 to 1 eight point difference.
They did get the major decision.
That's an extra point where I would state four more points, makes the score now 7 to 3 in favor of the cyclones.
Trevor Smith though, Victor Well, you have to figure that Smith was favored here going against the incoming freshmen and hey, initially I thought that they did a good job of fighting first.
Their first pair was actually PACE Yeah, and that the bottom position, you know, what do you do?
It's early in the season.
You got to take your guy down.
You got to let him go down and try to fight it out here.
No experience that.
Well, this should be a real interesting match.
Coming up, heavyweight the freshman highly touted Matt Fields from Iowa going against all-American and the senior from Manhattan, Kansas, Scott Coleman, Iowa State identical records this year, they're ranked high in the nation.
Matt Fields, a freshman, ranked number six in the nation.
Coleman ranked number eight in the nation, senior versus freshman.
I think this is a great matchup, very similar to the £97 weight class, but maybe a little bit more talent for the Hawkeyes here.
Coleman, kind of a crafty wrestler here, very good in the top position.
And you're going up against a freshman.
That's where you probably want to see it.
So Fields can hold his own in the bottom position here.
This could be get pretty interesting fields from North Cedar High School.
Wow.
Now, prep career record was 137 11, going undefeated as a junior and a senior two time state champion hands down.
And his big forte here in high school was certainly just a just a freight train double you're reaching and yeah, it's going up gets a little bit bigger more experience guys here at the college level.
But still think he has the ability to drive through a man and attack both hips.
And really he's one of those guys that drives the guy down.
When he gets in there, he doesn't stop.
Well, he's actually scored against Arizona State on a pretty good single leg.
He picked up and stayed with it.
And so, you know, depending on the guy's stance.
But yeah, he has a good driving double.
But you know, it's just turns on whether the guy's in that position or not.
Coleman doing a pretty good job of just a double inside with the there was that that was a little high though yeah Scott Coleman for the Cyclones Matt Field for the Hawkeyes Cyclones out in front 7 to 3 after matches.
Not a lot of action in this one so far, just kind of a strategic match and I have a feeling that's going to be that way for a little while here.
Well, notice my my first read on this is that Coleman's beating him to the inside position on both sides.
Come on.
See that Fields is settling for outside time.
This time he fights them off with a wrist.
But look, Coleman here is double inside right there.
Iowa State's double inside.
He got to the leg.
Single leg from.
Feels it.
Coleman breaks it, lost it.
Now you got too much help in there.
You got a lot of respect in there.
Went ahead and drove off of a pretty good powerful single leg shot, lowered his hip level, kept his shoelaces flat.
You feel it again?
There's a double inside tie here.
Coleman has got really his fingers cupped over to the back of fields head, difficult for fields to get through that.
Right now, his elbows are high.
They only get really not a lot you can do.
There.
Pretty good action there.
Love both guys.
Both guys move pretty well.
Shots taken by field ordered off by Coleman.
Anything can happen in these matches here, but you break it down to a four minute match.
Now I think it favors the that that the guy who's experienced in the top position and I'd say advantage Coleman right now with Fields not getting a take that's the end of the third period right down to zero zero.
Iowa gets the choice.
He says I'm going down right now.
You step out of the box.
I think this is a good call.
This way, partner.
Go down while you're fresh.
I agree with you.
You know, unless the guy is just super dynamite on top and you take neutral.
But.
But you can't wait.
There comes a leg in there is tough.
That's going to be tough to move.
So weighted is what you're saying?
Yeah.
If you take the down position, better to blow it off particularly, you know, your rust in the rust is pretty tough in the top position and try to clear that leg out.
But he's got a lot of weight for it a little bit.
I like I like what Coleman did here.
He started on the left and worked over the right leg, come back in again, and that's good.
You know, good chance to build some right time up fields.
The big thing with him here is he can't panic.
Start rolling around if he doesn't know what he's doing here right now.
Hey, best thing you can do is get to his feet.
Best thing to do and you get to his feet.
He's got a lot of weight on his hands.
See that?
Yeah.
When you put that ball, it's got a lot of hands.
Oh, nice switch.
Here's a leg up and there's going to be a reversal.
Wow.
He hit that hard quick.
He kind of.
And he's going to put him on a roll.
Nope, Didn't get it back.
But here's really important for him to try to stay in the top position while he's got Coleman relaxed here.
I only surprised me he was able to switch into that.
Yeah, but he was like, quick.
Yeah.
I mean, it was like an excuse.
A rocket.
Don't like this.
Look at it.
Nope, nope, No, he's going for it.
I've got the little guy, the big guy, Some credit for a freshman, but at least he's not.
You know, he's kind of surprised me because he was getting dominated from the top position there.
Yes, he was.
We're talking about where the arms are.
And we're looking at one of Iowa's true freshman on the mat tonight, a big freshman.
He's just matfield.
Looks like he's just a little more physical.
Huge.
He got the wrist there again.
See that?
He's got the wrist head in there.
He breaking down here?
Oh, he's going to let him go.
I think he's going play with the legs.
Oh, it's a one point escape.
Nice job by Coleman fighting off of that position.
Yeah, big feet.
That was a big point for Collin getting to his feet.
Once you get to your feet, you got a good chance.
Guard Get away.
You know, it was big about that for as far as Fields was concerned is because he got into a reversal situation where he was able to get into a strength, which was that doubling.
Right.
He was controlling almost led to back points.
Here's the here's the reversal.
That's what I'm talking about.
Helps him now want a double leg.
Now, if he gets in there again now he's got confidence he can attack and win in that position.
And so many warnings and he almost went up to a hip.
He had him one count.
Okay, then the warning, no warnings.
We're going to the third period.
Iowa State's on the bottom.
Iowa State's Coleman, he's behind 2 to 1.
He needs an escape to tie it up, a reversal to go ahead.
He escapes.
It'll come down to the takedown.
As far as Fields is concerned, he just doesn't want to give up the reversal.
Coleman might be looking for two in this situation.
He'll just look like he's flowing a little bit and he's just kind of playing a little cat and mouse here.
I mean, he didn't look like he really wanted to put a crunch on them.
He did, but he was like, I feel more comfortable here, but he's got it here.
He comes up well, though, nice job.
And that was set up by that that switch position we saw before.
He got confidence in that position that cut the corner.
Coleman moves well in the circle.
Yes.
And Field apparently does, too.
Yes.
Does he come out of that?
It looked like Coleman was going to come around it.
Yes, it did.
Good job by both wrestlers.
But Fields did a nice job of not letting him finish off that those points here, it's a hit.
It's going to win.
No.
Is he going to come across Got to drop the shoulder underneath or underneath the knee?
He's got to pick the leg off in the air field.
Goal has to come up in the air.
Otherwise he's going to well, this is a battle.
He's got to bring his chest up.
Coleman has much more advantage here right now.
Coleman can lock the leg right now and score good.
He locks the leg by driving into fields.
Wow.
Nice job by field.
So he ducked underneath.
And you, though, that really saved him.
Hey, you know what?
We're talking about incoming freshman here.
But all in there.
See if Fields learn something from that because Coleman really has a good maneuvers there.
Good.
Lowers his hips really well and glides around the man.
Yeah, it's 2 to 2, 30 seconds left.
No riding time.
It comes down to this head up side shot that time.
That was it.
Oh, Aditi is hit.
There's two right here.
Wow.
What a good finish by you.
He went with the finish?
Yes, he went with the movement of Coleman right there.
Great read.
And he's been in Houston.
He's going to get Warren for stalling there.
And I'll tell you.
So that's he'll take that every time.
He will take it, you can take it.
But if you want to learn for the future, you better learn tonight is better.
Lauren Dan, we don't know yet.
It's not over yet.
One and two could beat him, but he wins it a wins a win there.
You're right.
You know, the guy is really surprising.
He really is.
And he's an all-American there.
And again, like we talked about in the open, this has been paved with all America.
The national champions have come up here against six inexperienced guys.
That's a win for Iowa's Matt Fields.
That makes the score.
Iowa State seven, Iowa, six.
Look at the replay here.
This is the first time he goes inside with his head to the inside, but then his head drop.
Yeah, and he had drove it came across the far side and he got his head up out of there.
And it was nice.
Once he got perpendicular you get you get the points.
But don't you think Coleman was looking the head to the outside shot there.
I think Coleman got caught off guard there just a little bit.
On reaction.
£125 from the Big Ten, the little but no less important.
Hey, the big guys are giving us a great show so far.
We're going getting ready for £125 now for Iowa.
Lukas Mannone Mannone, Johnny Yani, sophomore from Long Island, New York.
Transfer from Brown.
Yep.
And he he's going to try to show the Iowa fans that Brown delivers.
Well, he didn't have a good opening and he's I think he's his big thing here is to show that that was not himself talking about a better Nakamura that he just is taking down.
Oh one third more points here he started all last week.
So Iowa State Grant Nakamura is a junior from Hawaii, done a nice job for Iowa.
He's ranked 16th in the nation.
He's going up against Lucas Bargnani, the sophomore transfer from Brown University, because he's looking.
Do I believe the rule says, here's the replay, the takedown.
He just puts his hips in and lifts.
Well, nice hip.
Yeah, he puts the hips and lips.
Well, nice technique there.
You know, Nakamura has had a nice career and obviously you have to favor him in this situation.
And last year he goes 7 to 5 with the number one or two ranked wrestler at that time, Luke Houston.
So, you know, this is and he's crafty down here in the down position.
He's looking reversal all the way.
There's one point escape Iowa wrestler and he's on fire right now on the outs coming I want to see if he can keep it up.
Yeah it's really keep him good low position and stalking into yeah I'm working off the elbow tie it's a long match so you know hopefully he can keep it up.
Crafty how does a young man that I believe wanted was considering Iowa in the first place and then went to Brown and then decided he wanted to be here.
Fine.
Find out what to move by both sides.
But but you can tell how many Nani's pace slowed down here a little bit and knock more.
He got on his offense.
Well, you know that ankle pick there, he actually went for an ankle pick but that was been kale kale when it went for leg tackle off that see stop one leg get the other right.
That's the difference is none of this missing stuff, you know direct hits all the time.
Right.
Keep balance off power here 2 to 1 in my position Anonymous is he's not reacting.
He's not coming off.
We'll see if that holds the rest away through the match.
He's good head and a half look lower than Nakamura as well.
That's wrestling reaction right there.
Good, good stance.
People talk about the details and wrestling here but can't get his offense off on that nice low stance.
Hey, Nakamura has got some good shots there.
Pull it down.
45 seconds left in the first period, scores mannone from Iowa up 2 to 1 over Nakamura strength of a real quick takedown for the Hawk-Eye.
Well, Nakamura's attack nicely, like several times, which is his right leg.
Iowa.
Rest of his right leg.
We'll see if he has a shot to that back leg.
Uribe showed it to him a few times, see if there's any reaction the other way when Yanni has slowed down a little bit more leg with bite poke, Russell's got that leg hook is only 7 seconds, going to be going to be tight through this guy get oh, that was a key takedown.
One second 2 seconds to go.
Oh man Unanswered points and in Carver Hawkeye for Iowa State Now that was big into the end of the period points that's that's the kind of points that are going to make a difference.
Nakamura goes up 3 to 2 at the end of the first period.
Good job, guys.
Thanks.
Okay.
Zach Randolph Nakamura has a has an appearance of some calm the sitting.
Yeah, he does.
When that match started slowing down he got on offense again Attack that lead leg.
Oh.
Getting encouraged by his coaching staff.
They're not.
He wants to keep the pace of this match high.
But it seems like Nakamura just doing enough to score points.
Well, Mannone came out, had a good hard shot.
He really hadn't had a shot after mostly a lot of good motion and possession he scored on that shot.
He needed to go back.
Here's where he got beat last week, rolling around, but got both guys good action.
Well, he's going to have a difficult time.
He goes to that believe that really plays into Nakamura's favor here you roll around like that and he's rolling again.
Yeah some guys just feel good rolling around.
Okay.
Well, you know, it starts in your practice room.
You got somebody like Barcelona who has had success with it.
And look at this, those clingy legs.
You know, I usually don't like to recommend guys wrestling on their rear like that, but for some people it works.
Well, you said some guys like to roll around like that, but obviously Johnny doesn't like rolling around like that right back point.
He lost back points last year.
So instead of staying keeping his base and trying to get his hips out there, get him over your arm, he caved in mentally and is wrong with him, right?
Yeah, he went with it.
Yeah.
When you go with it and he didn't have any arm control, he'd roll a lot.
But he's not getting the guy over his arms, not creating any space.
He got his hips on Nakamura's hip.
What he needs to do right here.
Space is his best chance to score out of them.
Yeah, of He's got to try to do more traditional stuff, stand up off the whistle, try to get his hips away.
And now, of course, the stall warning because not more than one wants to score is just as good as an skate.
You know, Nakamura he looks like he's not going to be undone by anything, though.
Yeah, he looks pretty calm, right Again, Tim, you always hear me talk about right in the right hand side.
That's where he's good.
Beltran should be able to get out this off the first.
Should be able to slip his hips out through Nakamura.
Oh, knowledge.
The thing you can do is get to his feet, roll around like that's not going to get it done.
When you guys behind your arms.
All right.
It's just a matter of guys will be glued to your back.
I'd say Nakamura will move over to the right hand side.
Now try to roll them all the way over.
Come back.
Left, right.
Okay.
Nice job of loading up the hips.
I'm not clear in the wrist.
Johnny's not going to rest when he moving.
But Nakamura is doing a great job of controlling it.
He's got right time without a lot of writing time.
Minute 30, writing time.
At the end of the second period, score 5 to 2 in favor of Nakamura and look at the pace, Nani.
Right now.
He's not this crisp as he was.
When you spend the whole period down like that, we like to go.
That's tough on you really is go.
That's a lot of weight.
You move around.
He's smart.
They're keeping him down for a little bit, trying to get that right in time.
Down because we let him go right away.
You know, it's like you're going to have to raise that right time pressed and trying to put the pressure on him out.
Nakamura doing a good job of keeping his hips underneath him, gets out, whatever that is.
Good.
Yeah.
Nice shot.
He's tough here.
Lifted, trying to Now he's right back in the match, right side going down.
He looked a little too calm there.
Yeah, he was Got beat up.
He got faked out pretty, pretty bad.
I thought that would happen to back at earlier at 88.
All right.
But the writing time guys.
Now it's time to let him go.
If he's going to get back in this match on the back end.
Well, he's got a bad shot.
Yeah, bad shot.
Wow.
Good ball.
Bad shot.
Yeah.
Almost look like he had an opportunity to go behind.
Said it.
Said he went for the counter shot.
Why?
There was nothing there, was there?
Yeah.
He didn't set it up at all.
Nakamura from Iowa State out front.
9 to 4.
No writing time right now.
But he's going to do something about that right now.
This is where this is where Johnny had trouble last time.
So now he's rolling around again.
He's hip to hip.
He's hip to hip on him where he's getting B's over the arvo.
Yeah, yeah.
He lets it back under and then he rolls there and gets danger of getting in trouble there.
Where he gets in trouble and a lot of time get, you know, gets run off the clock, yell and be smart to Nakamura.
He's out front 9 to 4.
There's not going to be a guy that has to get some back points here.
Yeah.
He gets back one major decision There you go.
Big points.
Oh, stop there.
That's done.
Oh, man.
I'll tell you, you talk about big points.
The big point, those were big points.
Why?
That's the way you end the half here.
Wow.
That's the end of the half.
That's six points for Iowa State.
That puts them up 13 to 6.
He stayed just calm enough to end it and get the ultimate victory in wrestling.
You're looking at Grant Nakamura and he's a winner by pin.
You see the score after five matches?
We're halfway through Iowa State, 13.
Iowa, six.
Here's the replay in that match.
You know, it's like it's a tough match.
It means a lot.
But all of a sudden, he just gets caught on his back.
And, you know, you didn't see the pin coming.
You saw the tilt.
But then when he came up high on him, he kept that deep half in and he pinned that left shoulder down.
And he was just able to come around and get the ball real quick.
But you know, it was surprising because of but Johnny was in the match.
Let's go to Jim Gibbons.
Thank you, Tim.
I'm here with Bobby Douglas.
Hey, Bobby.
The fir was flying in those first five matches.
I tell you what.
Great excitement here.
And how about that ball?
Well, that ball was huge.
It'll show up at the end of the match, but there's been a great five matches.
Both teams are battling like crazy and it's just good for wrestling now.
Good luck the rest of the way out.
Thank you.
David.
Over the course of the year or for the better of the country.
Well, after five matches, score is Iowa State 13, Iowa six.
We'll be back with more college wrestling in just a moment.
here we are at Carver Hawkeye Arena for the Iowa State.
Iowa, meet the scores.
Iowa State 13, Iowa six.
I'm Tim Johnson along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
And guys, it's been entertaining.
Oh, absolutely.
There's been some things that have taken place that you really didn't predict.
But, you know, you just want to run it right down the line.
You know, you can you can tell the folks.
Right.
I mean, at 74, it started out with pass a lot of winning, but he hung on.
It was it was a struggle for possible.
It was a win.
Yeah, I won And at 84 what a big win for Iowa.
Big seconds.
Yeah, big win, I think Bradley winning that match And and here we are at 133 getting started that it's a big win too.
Exactly.
Goes back to high school days they haven't met each other in two or three years or so.
And I'm telling you, this is a big one for the Hawkeyes to get back into it.
But you're looking at Jesse Sundell right there.
Jesse Sundell only lost once in his high school career.
And guess who he lost to?
This young man right here.
They lost he lost to him in the sectional tournament.
He got revenge the next week in the district tournament.
And then they didn't meet in the state tournament.
But the only loss in Sundial's career was to the Iowa wrestler.
And they both took different paths here, too, to get to college wrestling that year.
Going across, went to junior college and really wasn't all that highly recruited and finds and finds himself on the Iowa state of Iowa Mat and the big meet like this wrestling is old rival Sundial recruited Iowa State right out of college Rondale from Ogden, Iowa.
Garland Marcus from Greenfield, Iowa, same neck of the woods.
Neither wrestler are nationally rated right now.
I don't believe in the top ten or so.
It's a defining moment for Sundell.
He's been in the lineup in and out for Iowa State, and if they're going to be strong and growing stronger at this weight, this is a big match for him, Certainly.
Isn't that when you get to this level three years down the road, you can throw all those high school titles just right out the I mean, he had a fabulous career and it was really fun to watch him Russell dog in high school.
But you get this environment here and you've got almost a little bit of a target on your back.
If you haven't haven't progressed.
He's been in the Iowa State room.
Got to knock this low A little tip runs Wow Two points.
Nice move by up Mario He hit a near arm far leg type move and it worked very well.
That's the type of move a lot of times you can put people in the back and Sandell realized that and bailed out there right at the last second to keep from getting put on his back.
Suddenly he's a dangerous wrestler from this position on his knees counter and reach his back.
So, you know, he's always in the match capable of throwing somebody to his back from the even the down position.
Yeah, he's known as a good scrambler, good cradle wrestler.
I think this is a big match for Iowa as a team right here.
I mean, that's a very good job.
This is one that it's a toss up between the two, but Iowa reestablishes some sort of momentum if they can win it here.
And it takes a deep hole if they lose it, well, you have to say that from Iowa standpoint that the match at 84 was a big toss up between the number two and number four ranked wrestler.
And then, you know, a heavyweight feels pretty highly recruited wrestler and going up against all American, you really couldn't call that a toss up, maybe even an upset, but but a mild upset.
So lots of, you know, where they got dominated.
They were probably expecting to lose those matches.
I don't think they expected to get pinned there That yeah, probably.
Now there's bonus points that always factor in these big meets so far is this Iowa state for bonus points and the Hawkeyes zero taking away the danger you talking about by staying close to the hips and controlling them, keeping his hips under, staying out front, putting him in position that wasn't in trouble there.
He did that all with his footwork, right?
Yeah.
You just you've got a chance to look at that again here.
Young wrestler trying to figure out how to stay with the guy, all with his footwork scores to.
Oh, and favorite Garland knocks from Iowa and he's gathering some riding time a minute 10 seconds still 32 seconds left in the first period.
Gallinari is really having a nice first period for the Hawks.
Sundell really hasn't done enough.
You see how he's coming out there is his knees are flared out wide, his arms are out wide.
Makes it really easy path to be able to control his hips right down up is just basically let him go there with 13 seconds left in the period Yeah I didn't I don't think you know what the clock is but it takes him down.
It was worth it.
But he's not going to get him taken down in the scores 2 to 1 with a lot of riding time for Garland Marcus the score 2 to 1 in favor of the Iowa Hawkeye.
And he chooses down.
He wants to get after it.
Happy Zaleski in the white shirt and Ty Steiner in the dark shirt.
Right.
Former NCAA champion for the Hawks.
Look at this.
I'm like, Oh, good job of control.
On top the hips, son.
Del Cyclone on top.
Look into.
Oh, oh, He does get what he was looking for He covered hands Yeah he did And that that's a move that he got very successful in high school here with that inside cradle getting guys to step up into him And that's just the point, isn't it?
That was high school.
Yeah.
Now we're going to see how he's improved here in the wrestling room on his feet.
Going up is coming right after him.
That's a tough situation, though.
Yeah.
Sandell has cut the corner and he's locked in the crotch, rolling through.
Well, look, I'm not going to improve this position a little bit, but he still can stand there holding back up a little bit, but he's still out of position, so now he's doing good.
Hip position there.
Good job of following coach's instructions there.
Good.
Jesse.
Three, two, one.
In favor of the Iowa wrestler Colin Arcus.
He had a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second period.
Everything going go LaMarcus his way as the Hawkeyes try to get back in this meet.
They're down 13 to 6 after five matches all around his shot Sundell really hasn't been able to get any shot off here.
He's shooting through going up his arms.
Now he finds himself in a front headlock position.
We're pretty deep arm in there, pretty deep arm to go behind or snap down very short, easy arm up a little.
Not a lot of active play step in here.
Yeah he did keep weight on the arm when he went around He know let up off the arm there.
We can sometimes be too critical here but both Russell was making a mistake here at goal is here had an opportunity to blow this match open here deep in on the legs and it's kind of been a little bit more passive and and sundial really, you know, just trying to shoot through the arms here.
There's no setup for okay, we're going in the third period.
Gallinari is ahead 3 to 1 he's still got that riding time He could build up a little bit more here and that could come into play big time go right every second.
And riding time counts here.
When he does get up and throw, does he tell you what he's gal?
Marcus is letting a guy who's used to winning when hanging around Right now time scores 3 to 2 with that escape for Sundial.
And as Jim pointed out, a guy like Jesse Sundell, four time state champion from Iowa used to winning.
You don't.
I'll let him hang around, but Guy will knock us in on it.
Can he get the hips underneath?
And he does.
And he gets the people.
He's got a potential.
You get it later, but he missed it.
Let him build his hips back up there.
Pick him right up off the mat, make sure that there wasn't any counteraction.
And he lifted them straight up, didn't really drive into a mode where he could have.
But yeah, he's going to let him go again.
Another escape, 5 to 3 in favor of Iowa's Guy Tanaka's, but he's got riding time that almost can't erased Bandele would have to take him down right now and ride him out to tie this knee.
He's not penetrating.
He's laughing at the leg a little bit, dropping his knee down and only reaching instead of taking his hips with him.
Yeah, there's really no set up there as he's coming straight at you, straight at him.
And Kyle Knox's elbows are down pretty low.
Well, the score says 5 to 3, but it's really effectively a three point lead for Guanacaste.
He's got he's going to end up with more than a minute riding time, which will give him an extra point.
So it's really 6 to 3 right now.
And Sundell has got to do something about Come on, guys, pick it up on the green regarding this situation.
The match of your Jesse Sundell you want to put two or three moves together here, you don't get one of them, so be it.
But pick up your pace.
Jalen Atkins did a good job of snapping.
There had a potential ability to get a going high, but he came off the shoulder again.
He never really got much going.
He has not got much going at all.
SUNDELL Yeah, yeah.
He had what was probably is one of his better shots a little while ago, but pretty much the match right there.
Six three is a big win for Iowa's Mario Mario Galan knocking Galahad the only wrestler to give Jesse Sandow a high school loss, now gives him a college laugh and gives Iowa three points and brings him with 39 in this takedown.
Here's Williams up ahead.
Comes up, doubles up, really drives right through him here steps up, steps up, pops hips in, you know, didn't really run him but did a nice job of battling here, showed his strength.
Well, Dan, you think it's a big match coming up?
This is this is a big match because the searches, Alex, to search this has not lost this style of match since junior high school has not lost this style of match in junior high school.
Alex deserves this is a true freshman coming off an undefeated high school career.
I mean, I don't know what he has 250 junior, 50 to 300 wins, right.
But Gaelic.
Gaelic is favored.
Number two, ranked in the nation here.
Alex, the searches.
We're just joined by Jim Miller, the Dan Gable coach of the year award winner, presented a halftime by Dan Gable.
He's sitting with us now.
And we were just talking, Jim, the search has not lost a match, but this style since junior high.
Unbelievable.
And and so Gaelic, of course favorite and number two ranked wrestler the nation out of it and this is this is a big match at big time and one on one of the ones I'm always looking forward to see congratulations a great award I didn't break that award, did I know you didn't.
Well, you know what?
You can always win another one.
That's, you know, Miller has done an incredible job at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, ten of the last 12 years.
They finished in the top two in the nation in Division three last year.
They set an all time record for points, winning again and.
He wins the Dan Gable Coach of the Year award, which is given to the top coach in the nation of all the divisions.
That's Jim Miller out of East Waterloo.
You and I and now Wartburg College.
That's a great, great feat.
Jim thanks for the intro man.
That was pretty big.
Was really special coming from a you know, growing up in Waterloo, watching Dan wrestle just a couple of years behind him.
But, you know, that made it even more special for me.
Well, Dan almost dropped your award out there.
Looked like he broke it.
Well, it was a two piece award, so I think it scared him, but it's intact.
I'll tell this is a tough match.
So far, nobody's really getting too much position.
It pits people that have to hold up in this match.
Somebody doesn't hold up.
Then I'd say that somebody has an edge, but I'm not sure.
So far both guys look pretty powerful.
And we saw last year that Galic came out just like he shot out of a cannon.
He beat the eventual national champion in that match.
Yeah, he did beat Cliff Moore last year.
Moore just came out, shot out of a cannon.
But I think the knock on Gallacher is is he has those close matches against guys that he kind of brings them up to his level but boy he is really tough to score on Zach Roberson talked to him over the summer and fall and he says he's just really impressed with his his ability out there.
Just keep the match in his pace.
Well, you know, he's already won.
I believe he won Sunkist earlier this year.
It's a freestyle tournament.
Freestyle wrestler also for two freshmen in the lineup tonight.
Jim, that's a surprising number for Iowa.
It's a it's a coming of age for them.
Yeah, sure is.
But, boy, when you see a field and this kid come out, man, I mean, they don't look like freshmen, don't wrestle like freshmen.
I really think that's a key match for Iowa being behind by four with only four matches to go and probably Iowa State favored at 149.
So, yeah.
So what what's the conference look like this year?
Conference is tough again.
You know, we got to Luther ranked third, Simpson ranked fifth, I think six teams in the top 15.
So I'm really excited you guys are doing Iowa public television doing our thing.
Where is that going to be?
And to be the last college weekend at the end of the first period of zero zero, We're talking to Jim Miller, who's the coach of Wartburg College, and they're in the Iowa conference, the top Division three conference in the nation with the Iowa Conference Championships.
There's the award being presented by Dan Gable, an award named after Dan Gable Win magazine.
That Win magazine, Dan Gable, coach of the Year.
That's a good shot, Dan, not bad right here.
It's also a magazine that helps out sport, a great magazine, Win magazine.
We appreciate their coverage of the sport.
And look, just to finish it, located Newton at the WIN Institute, the Wrestling Institute Museum, finishing a thought about the Iowa conference that's being held at this year, the Conference championships, Lawrence College at Lawrence College in Iowa.
Public Television is covering same night coverage of the Iowa conference championship bouts.
And I love doing that.
I think that's one of the more fun meets that we get to do every year because those guys are going wrestling for a title that's important to them.
And we really love that type of the repetition.
Well, this match up, we put that link in there and he's getting some control.
That's a big, big four for writing time for next period or whatever period.
Galic impressed me with his strength, though.
Come to his feet.
He came to his feet.
That leg was in there tight.
He just flexing and it straightened out.
Now 1 to 0 in favor of Galic on the strength of that escape that happened with just about a minute and a half left.
In the second period, the score is one zero.
It's a little injury time.
Variety says, Nope, I don't want it.
I'm ready to go.
No, he doesn't want it because if he does get injured, then the other guy gets his choice.
After the second.
So that would be the next time around.
So he doesn't want to get this free.
Went away and it wasn't really too bad.
He felt forces doing a nice job of keeping good low position here as he always got his elbows drop gear working the head.
And I was really impressed with him in the top position even though he gave up that escape.
I mean, he still he's got some power up there.
And normally when you have a freshman wrestler that comes out and does pretty well, he's usually pretty good in the top position.
He looks pretty schooled up on wrestling.
GALLAGHER Right now, really, I tell you, it's just it's kind of like there's not a lot of action, but there's a lot of tactics going on.
Yeah, I mean, this is just it's a Gallic match.
I mean, he's, you know, have a control.
The inside portion of the match on the mat is good that you mentioned.
Jimmy's really schooled up on him here.
He's had his whole redshirt year to get ready for this match and Yeah, well, he's in coming year to get ready for this.
He's watching the national terminology in Gallic.
He hasn't seen him yet.
Fresh down three.
Oh, yeah.
Well, behind you.
All right, I'm behind you.
Okay.
We're Jim Miller, the coach of the Wartburg College National Championship team of Division three and Dan Gable, coach of the Year.
And it's really good to have you part of this broadcast, but I have the opportunity to present the award here at halftime of the Iowa State.
Iowa meet.
Now, what a great environment.
And now it was my pleasure.
Bladen would like to have you do the commentary again for the for the for the conference tournament.
Yeah.
Maybe some of the other coaches might have a little difficult time with that.
I hope maybe they don't get busy.
Then he wouldn't be in the corner at one point this game hall got a great match.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I did not know that you know, that was going to happen for sure.
I mean, I thought, you know, garlic would possibly keep him down, but Coach Douglas, I believe, stepped up and kind of told him, let him go.
No writing time 1 to 1 the score minute 20 left in the match regulation time there big match for the Hawkeyes down by 413 to 9.
Yeah well coming down to the last minute it's wow this is going to be interesting you see how Gallic one of the they are that position and as the freshman went right after.
Yeah he stayed in tight with it he got a good good deep right arm there.
Good powerful deep right arm.
Yeah.
If Iowa could pull this out and then, you know, next match I think I maybe misspoke.
Obviously, Eustace is the favorite right at 49.
So they could pull ahead then a couple of toss ups and really set up for the two toss up.
Yeah, Awesome.
Pick it up.
It's big right here.
He got 43 seconds left.
That hasn't been any warnings.
No, I don't believe so.
No warnings.
And really, can you tell who has the advantage.
I haven't been able to tell too much yet.
Well, we'll see what garlic's trying to set up.
He's trying to get to a surface left leg.
Look at this guy setting up the inside trip.
He's looking for a position.
However, he's actually coming out a little bit too deep.
He's got that deep right arm in there.
It looks pretty strong.
He gets another arm, he can neutralize it.
Gallic search is blocking off pretty well.
All right, I stop.
Look at this.
Well, get that shot.
Look at this.
Oh, man, Look at this.
Where the searchers is tough.
Wow.
Look at this, guys.
We're going to go over time.
Well, I'm telling him this is the this is the right number one rated wrestler and the other guy fight for the loss of his record.
Impressive debut for justice.
Let me go with that was anybody's match with that.
With that over and under lock right there, you have a feeling that the surface says this is just where I wanted to be out.
Well, I'm not so sure, but what I wanted to be this guy.
I mean, it's all for him.
The search is right now.
He looked like he had a shot there, but he didn't take it.
Yeah, he looks like he wants to.
The searchers can shoot it.
You know, I think he's underestimating himself there.
But because he had to come out of that single leg, I mean, he was pretty much dead cold.
So he got that whizzer in there.
That's right.
20 seconds left in the period.
It's the big match, folks.
It's the big match.
A takedown here would end the match otherwise we go into the second period of overtime and they're not they're not sudden victories either.
The second and third periods, they will wrestle second, third, unless somebody gets pinned.
It looks like they're going down to the second period.
Here they are.
And tell us about that.
Damn well they're going flip a coin and somebody is going to get top and somebody's going to get bottom.
And Right.
You got to keep track right in time a little bit now.
But if they go through these next two periods and there's still a tie, they start again.
Now, keep track of the line time, guys look pretty good, though, but the writing time would come up at the second time period after the second write out.
Each one gets up and down after the second one.
Right.
In times of fact, keep it actually starts now.
I believe it starts now.
Stars now.
30 seconds to go.
Don't stop those guys.
There's a little smile on his face right there and he gets on the right hand side, gets a nice Oh, boy.
That was quick.
That was a quick, quick point.
I don't think he didn't move like that when he was underneath.
So that's that's a big quick escape.
That was very good tactics for Garlock right there.
And Dallas is holding on right here here.
You know, I almost got reversed here.
He certainly did a good job of scrambling off his.
But there I don't know if people understand all the scoring here, but they probably do.
That doesn't matter.
They're going crazy how they're going to figure it out here shortly.
They probably haven't had a match like this for a long right now Night win in a right wants to give one and two.
Let's go.
He wants to give me a skate.
I'm Not so sure I let him go.
No, I was right in time if that was one.
Yeah.
Was the 30 seconds.
Yeah.
If we write him out, he wins.
Yeah, I think that's what he's looking for.
So what he's looking for now is going to depend on his heel there.
So he keeps getting his heel up, keeps getting his heel up.
It's not doing a good job.
The search is not doing a good job of keeping his legs underneath him.
He's got that ankle hook shot, come back, hook that ankle and he's on the bottom.
Is this what we talked about?
The true freshman.
Yeah, exactly.
He's got hit quick switch got hit a quick switch.
The only chance he could get out he got beat He got beat on the position.
You're looking at the first loss for the surface in this style since junior high five years ago.
Wow.
What an by boss.
But that's a pretty good representation of his skills out there going against the top rank.
Russell Absolutely.
He did a good job in the march Gone no wins a win for Rivers State.
There.
Now you got a seven point lead.
Well, we got three matches now that matches all winnable by Iowa.
Yep, all winnable.
And obviously that's why we wrestle.
I mean, I'm not giving this next one away.
Aaron Scott from Iowa State, a freshman certainly not favored against Ty Eustace, the junior four Iowa.
This is one of the few matches that is a favorite.
And Iowa certainly has it here.
And Ty Eustace then got a couple of toss ups.
The first 16 to 9 in favor of Iowa State.
As our guest Jim Miller pointed out, it's a seven point lead, three matches left nobody out of this thing.
Iowa State ahead.
But I was not out of no, not at all.
Three wrestlers coming up here, three wins makes it a two point victory for Iowa.
It's just as simple as that.
But Iowa State has a couple of tough kids coming up.
That Baltimore boys.
Yeah, Joe Johnsons really look tough early on in the season.
LAMB set him in that.
You know, everything I hear about Perry, I'm looking forward to seeing him.
I'm scared to see him.
RUSSELL Yet So that should be a great matchup.
We'll let you enjoy, sit back and not try to, you know, work us out of a job as Jim Gibbons said, you know, we leave you here too long and you'll have our job.
I will.
Public television.
I appreciate you guys are the best.
And you guys do such a great job.
Thanks for everybody in state watching and we appreciate it.
Jim Miller, Wartburg College national coach of the Year, one of the great wrestling ambassadors, too, involved with the National Wrestling Coaches Association on the executive committee.
And it's a great, great award that your name is on National Coach of the Year, Ty Eustice against Aaron Scott, zero zero.
Eustis from Iowa.
Scott from Iowa State hits terrific.
You know, and this is a great situation for Eustis here to get it on his offense.
And he's had a difficult time, you know, blowing matches open here.
Everything's been pretty tight.
He's kind of controlling the mat position here, but he's not able to open anything up yet.
And, you know, so again, you can't take any matches for granted, but we're down lots of ice.
Iowa State seems to control the mat pretty well.
Well, you know, he's just keeping a good low position here and he's not really giving Eustace anything to shoot at once.
They get to the back of the mat, the outside third in low position and trying to get angles on Eustace.
You know, again, it's attacking with one arm shot.
Yeah well you only have one arm doesn't got pushes the athlete away so that left arm was left up high there.
He pushes him away when he's really trying to get him to come towards him.
He's getting one arm in, but he needs to get the other eye on the trail.
Arm?
Yeah, he does get Matt position that probably wears on the shot and keeps active.
It would wear on the referee a little bit here, but he would want him to stay towards the center there, there, right there hip I want him now next time he will take Coach Douglas.
He said you got to take a shots on space and take him down.
But that's not the answer.
You know, he's in this match mentally.
The answer answered.
The coach's call here came on a little low slap shot.
It's only five, 12 seconds left, no score.
So that's uses his position to score with nothing.
No good.
Not great job by Iowa State.
Wow.
Great job right there.
It was gone on the edge.
Good fight.
Got some blood and looked like that.
That continuing wrestling look like lot like Bacchus.
You know Bacchus is really good with that and never concedes anything till the last second as go score 6 to 9 and bagels by Iowa State over Iowa zero zero here at £149.
We're down to the final three matches of the ten match.
Iowa State Iowa.
You'll meet here at Carver Hawkeye.
It's going to probably take three victories unless there's some major decisions here.
But Iowa, to get back into this, me here, you know, three victories would win it for Iowa.
Roll it.
It's as simple as that.
One point escape for the Hawkeye ty Eustace Blue Earth, Minnesota, wrestled for his dad, Jack.
His brother Luke wrestled for the Hawkeyes for the past three years, graduated this past year.
A great wrestling family out of Mankato, or the old blue or blue.
If dad wrestled, it mattered.
His dad, Minnesota State, now Minnesota State.
There you go.
Now, you could have done it for yourself, Scott.
Doing a good job and he gets the edge there.
He circling back in, but kind of forced this bad shot and forced a bad shot.
Panic.
Yeah.
Got Warren on the edge, got worn panic, made a bad low shot.
That was the first opportunity the guy had to go around him.
Otherwise he was doing a good job for.
Call Aaron Scott from Iowa State taking his position.
He's a redshirt freshman out of Oskaloosa, Iowa.
Nothing, nothing.
Get out of 101 is a tough position position for Scott to be in here.
Big meet.
You know, I'm sure he's paying for the majority of his education.
So coming out here, being part of the team and put in a tough role here against heavily favored, heavily favored Houston here.
Oh, no, no, no.
It's good to be a pretty tough referee to come in.
They're doing a little did a little wrestling in his day.
I don't know what he said, but we all got the point.
I think he said, hold on there haha.
Subject to interpretation.
I have to go through me first.
Take the set together, got to get it out.
Yeah, he's kind of kind of dropping in, dropping down instead of penetrating.
But he's not getting scored on.
No, he's doing a good job there, but he is on the edge quite a bit and I'm not sure that he's going to let him stay there.
Much more.
Yeah, Yeah.
And I think that was just that's a good call we're making now.
That's probably dog stuff.
I think it's a good call.
But, you know, he does I think he's mad at his wrestler.
I think he's is upset with Byron Scott because he just keeps getting better.
Oh, that'd be good.
Yeah, that's the way it should be.
He's competing in here, though, right up until then.
Yeah.
He's giving up a little bit on that little final few inches, which means at the end of that was a big, big takedown.
Unanswered points.
And I think that at this point in time, with 2 minutes left in the hour, Coach Douglas wants this fight.
That's what he just told us.
Wrestling.
I just want you to fight Gore 6 to 1 favorite I used to score in a third period, 6 to 2.
He gives him a run.
He gives him a escape, make it a shot, putting his head down.
But, you know, he's from a good wrestling town.
Oskaloosa.
Yeah, and he should have had a good coach.
He can't keep backing up the now, I guess, way off the edge.
Yeah.
We're talking about Aaron Scott, who's got himself in a pickle here.
It's 84.
Yeah, he's he's leaning.
I think they smell major here.
Yeah.
And they're going to make up that extra point that Iowa State picked up earlier.
Riding time really isn't much of a factor.
So he's at least get two takedowns or he's going to get another nod.
Stockholm if he goes out again.
Yeah, Bobby's out on the mat.
Well, Bobby wants him to control his wrists.
You see that?
You control the guy's wrist.
He's not going to have a difficult time scoring.
You just see him.
What, To his wrists?
Scott's not really responding here right now.
7.10 now is a shot with a head down.
Yeah.
Panic again?
Yeah, we've seen this several times, so, you know.
Oh, boy.
Look at that guy.
Oh, if you only knew how to be a dodge.
It was all it.
Yeah.
So Scott says I'm not getting pinned.
Well, he rolled through, but now they may get disqualified, but yeah, I don't think so.
What is it?
A two pointer?
Yes.
To an end?
Yeah.
He's not going.
He's going to stay in there.
It's only 30 seconds.
One he gets after though.
You never know.
Guys on the edge.
Yeah.
It would behoove Ty used to maybe push for that.
Here's the roll.
That right there Just happened to get his right arm through there.
He used to go there.
Yes, he did.
He kept his elbow in the other side.
Good.
There it is again.
He showed some power here by Scott because that could have been tight action.
I drive down to it trying to go out of bounds again.
I'm not sure that I come up high to a wizard.
Wow, that's pretty high points to get a major here.
Hey, get up.
I will.
Right back in.
There's going up to two matches that everybody was waiting for, 57 and 65 feet from the Paulson twins from Iowa, I tell you, and Joe Johnston and Mark Perry from Iowa, tie you roll your winner, 15 to 6, four points for Iowa makes the score.
Iowa State 1613 anybody's me, Anybody see still had a difficult time you know setting up his offense there maybe that got most of his points on the go behind and won £157 up for Iowa state a sophomore running off Grant Paulson, Council Bluffs, Iowa, There you're looking at it.
Joe Johnson, Junior out of Kansas State, couple of closely ranked guys, ranked number six.
That's Boston ranked number seven.
That's Johnston.
Big match for both teams.
Paulson up from 149 last time they wrestled.
They did wrestle before and Paulson won a couple of years ago in an tournament in overtime.
So Paulson coming right up years ago, he came out of them coming right up about a year right away.
Oh, look at that.
Nice shot, too.
Nice shot.
Good takedown.
tOe.
Two points for Trent Paulson.
He looks real physical right now.
Took a right to Joe Johnston.
Break it down and set up a position here.
He's setting it up.
And if he hooks the leg, Nothing, nothing, nothing.
Wow, He's going for it any.
Yeah, he did.
He spread a spread.
Johnson out though now allows him put both legs in the Franken look at this nothing and he's got a lock on it if you put the legs doing inside some wow he's put a lot of pressure on him You know national finals rodeo out there in Las Vegas here.
Now, let's remind you of it.
Let's get building up some good bull rider.
So far, it looks it looks to be a good bull rider in this one.
Patrick.
I mean, has to take it out of you if you're Joe Johnson underneath there now, he's got his elbows out, away from his body and sports and he got the stalemate call there.
Gives him a chance at a new start already a minute of right in time he looked over to the coaches says you want to go freestyle.
They've just about came out of chairs, fell off their chairs.
You stay on top of them if you can.
This type of riding your pace big dividends later on in the match.
Yeah he's building up minute ten already.
It's just the physical nature of it you're making.
Johnson work off of hard and the fact that Johnson is really a goer and is positioned is really on the feet to be able to get people going.
And so he's really neutralized Johnson's ability to win this match right now.
Remember, a guy named Bruce Kent said that he used to wrestle for me, that when he got on the bottom, he had a tough time getting out at the beginning.
But once he learned to get out, he could utilize his conditioning and his takedowns.
And then he went on to be an NCAA champion and outstanding wrestlers.
But he had to learn how to get off this bottom position.
In one of the two positions.
You have to master.
Yeah, you have to.
Exactly.
And know he's been down there for a long time.
Well, also, it makes you go it's a matter of survival for him right now.
Right.
And I think what happens is if you can't get out from underneath here, then all of a sudden it affects your aggressiveness on that.
When you do get on your feet, you know, you could say, well, gosh, if I can take it down, it can be pretty tough on you.
Wow.
Back and forth here.
What's the reasoning there?
I went from underneath the top with him, painted it with because there wasn't much action going on either way.
Well, it shouldn't affect the match, you know.
But I don't know, I guess that no later on.
But he's just kind of clinging on.
I guess if you're not being successful turning around, you're likely going to get that call.
The way they're going nowadays, my heart is going to break down 37.
So but you hear Chris Bono talking to his wrestler Trent Paulson's, and the Iowa opponent, Joe Johnson, is going to come out hard.

Johnson able to get to speed 1000.
That was pretty quick.
But he got it at once.
He gave it to him and he's not going to change.
He's got something by now.
So he gave it to him and Paulson's been going for that.
Yeah.
And he just held up the ankle just long enough, you know, by visual start.
You know, he didn't wait till he got down.
He started counting when he was up, which you can.
Yeah.
And Mike, Mike was in a good position to call that and he just, he saw it.
So I was, I one of the reasons is because he saw Paulson almost do it a couple of times before and he's rewarding him.
I mean, here we go.
Let's count.
We don't have a good view here.
Let's it.
Oh, well, well, yeah.
We can't tell him.
Yeah, let's go.
I thought it was quick, but like you pointed out, Dan, I mean, I guess he had it.
He had him past 45 coming down.
Well, once he did, yeah.
I mean referee a lot of times, hurries down, gets down at the bottom and then start making their call.
He's, he was making the call which you're supposed to really, really where you see one.
Right.
Why stay on top five.
Go right back on the offense Paulson you're looking tough.
Look going right in the Underhook goes the inside trip.
If he doesn't, he's looking for the single leg.
It's the first time Joe Johnson's been able to get his penny kind of motion.
Yeah, I mean, I mean, well, nice legs way, but didn't quite get it, but it picked up the single leg there.
But it's five.
Nothing in favor of balls.
Yeah.
It's second period.
It'll be tough to come back.
But riding time going to have to start pretty soon.
This is where I thought the real battle would be in this match.
I think I would up right there.
Look at this.
Look at that.
No point.
Yeah, there's Jimmy to kick it off.
Hit it.
He loves that baby.
Johnson waited.
A lot of that baby Johnson way out, his right hit left leg again.
Very strong.
Boy, there's 45 seconds going to call a stalemate.
Not going to give it to Rosalee.
And I'm going to go look at this.
Look at this.
He's got a pain.
There it is.
He allowed Joe Johnson to get it because I think Joe Johnson is going to give up.
He's going to have to get another takedown this period.
Johnson wants to get back in the match.
He's got to come back right this minute.
Now it's time to go.
I miss it there.
Paulson needs to stay on his offense, to be honest with his defense.
Keep Johnson from attacking.
Yeah, that was pretty easy, guys.
That was, like, taken.
That was too easy.
A lot of time left I'd write him out.
Rest is very tough.
We talked about this big point right here.
Pause is not really it.
He's going to have to pick him up.
Look at this pause a little slow.
Go.
Wow.
Oh, here we go.
Yes.
Where's he gone?
Woodrum can't go down.
He cannot go down.
He got Houston.
Oh, look at this.
Oh, this is going to give the crowd a little chance to get into it in it.
Well, you know what?
Johnson's not going to take the down position here, but here's the replay here.
Glass takedown here.
I we caught him coming right in.
Right.
We talked about this when you and I got together here and we thought that Johnson had to go for two.
Right?
Right.
Like The scramble situations when he just went for the high crotch, when he went for the two legs, he's able to get him up off of his feet.
Right.
He had to wait a minute before he got the other takedown when he with the high cross.
But he did get it back, I think was going to get it.
But, you know, he did a good job of kind of putting him on his back, making him scared.
And he your danger put him towards their back and they get scared.
They let up a little They are listening to these are the things we talk about over here, you know, before the meet, who's going to go to the high cross.
You're going to get how you have time to talk about this stuff when you're doing all that cooking.
Yeah, You know, you're pretty, chef.
We got to get you a TV show.
We also talk about food.
Yeah.
Make wrestlers.
We like our food.
Here we go with this.
Well, we're going with your gym.
Give me.
Hey, Dad.
Gable.
Ira Johnson.
Yeah, and it's exciting.
Iowa.
Iowa State.
The replay that brought Joe Johnston back into this match, that kind setup match, stepping up, driving through.
Here we go.
You throw how many takedowns indeed in hitting?
Three at least.
Probably can't afford many years.
But Paulson's a tough kid.
He could score to at any time.
You get out of position.
Yeah.
Paulson is not going for his underhook so nice shot.
But he kind of came on his knees.
He's going to get called for stalling.
He backs up.
I don't think there's any stalling calls yet, is there?
Yeah.
Against Johnston.
Yeah, I missed that one.
A lot better.
Stronger hip there.
Look at this.
There's a big, big, big move on the edge plus time consuming plus time consuming.
Both of them warn.
I tell you what I tell you all these doing a good job there he ball both for Baltimore.
That's big that means the next next warning to stall.
Well Paulson's taken two shots he could only need one takedown He can only need one takedown There's three shots.
Shots is pretty strong right here.
Has a great shot his knees and you know, and the takedown could tie it up with the stall call.
But we're down to final.
There's the double knee.
He's got to get the hose on there.
Let's go get put.
Yeah, it could be put on his back.
You better not like his hand.
He locked his hand.
I don't know why he would say he's like his hands.
He can still go through his size.
You can hold on there.
But I obviously didn't think was going.
Yeah.
That's the way they call it and I'm not too sure on that call.
Yeah, I don't like it because all of a sudden you got a chance to bear hug him.
Well know the rules said we've talked about that.
If you can still go for your bear hug you can hang on there.
Yeah, it's just hung on too long.
But I don't know if it's the right call or not.
I don't know.
I think it lets him go here.
It's just as good as an escape and he'll get a stall call If he can get after it.
He's got to be just a heck of a match here.
And he's installing Paul to make this match with him and reach really, he's got him laying around.
He's going to because he's got to he's got to let go of him.
This is tough there.
I think you got one now.
He's going to have to go.
Well, we're going to run out of time here.
He does him.
What's going on?
You call him for stalling?
No, no, he doesn't know.
His score.
Doesn't know how many points.
Only takedowns he needs for three.
He's going to beat him one.
Wow.
He didn't know.
He just admitted it.
He just said, I think I know he should look good.
Yeah.
Yeah, you got it.
Horner.
They're going to tell you how many takedowns you need.
Yeah.
After the break, Paulson got his poise, took three shots, and when he waits, ten or 12 seconds there.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah, Yeah, He could have got another one.
Could have got a stall call.
I want to say this man answered the call here after the break.
Here.
He took three shots in the third period.
All right, You got to give credit.
Yep.
That's a big win for Trent Paulson.
He wins 10 to 8 over Joe Johnson.
He puts Iowa State out front by six.
It's not over yet.
It's got to be you've got to look for this one who has won the most matches.
If he gets a fall, well, most victories would win the tiebreaker be petty.
We've got two majors.
So he goes to most victories and in most I think even it's all up because Iowa states got a fall.
Yep, you're right.
So now we go to the next one.
Here we go.
Mark Perry, a freshman back from Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Travis Paulson, double Vision twin brother, Trent Paulson, who just won against Joe Johnson last match of the evening, Iowa State out in front, 19 to 13.
They felt it's as simple as this.
Mark Perry needs to pin Travis Paulson take it to a 1919 meet and then try and then the criteria for a tie, which we'll try to figure out for got scrawled out there.
Not a good shot.
Well, I'll tell you what, this is where he likes to be, though.
He locks low.
See where his lock is.
I know it's not.
He comes up.
He's good.
He comes up there over the barrel.
He's good, but he gets caught out area gets extended and waits a lot of time and effort.
But but he does have the ability to come up.
Paulson got good hits nice low shot there by Perry Paulson hangs in there with all the way.
I let his head go back down.
He got to keep his head up.
Yeah, but I think he's looking for the cradle and I think he's thinking fall away.
I wouldn't like to.
Yeah, I'm sure of that.
No point yet, though, even.
Yeah, look at that.
Oh, good move by Perry.
Just kind of hung on there like that.
That's probably the best place for him to get the ball and I don't think it's out of it for Mark Perry to be thinking about a fall here.
Oh, my gosh.
Well, I'm sure he's thinking about a fall, but but Paulson's not just a guy said, I'll say, keep on.
Keep off your back.
Yeah.
He's more of a guy to go out and win.
Yeah, he showed me.
What?
He's an all-American, I believe.
Yes.
Travis finished seventh in the country last year, again, trying to get a trade but didn't get it.
Strong is getting to his feet.
He gets to his feet.
It'll be fine.
He stays on the mat.
That's Where you get right here.
Look, it's locked.
Oh, oh, Oh, no.
You got a little work.
You think?
Hey, I'm Bobby Douglas.
I'm concerned the way he's trying to come up out of those legs.
And you see how Bobby just got in a crouch position right there with his knees up by his chest.
He's raising his rear up here, and I don't think that's the way you want to go at it.
Doing a pretty good job there as you got as you would be warned, he warned Paulson.
Really?
Yeah.
It's going to get a reversal here.
Wal Mart, look at the moment.
He's getting choke.
Look at the coaches.
They're all on the back.
It wasn't worth it for you.
Come on, let's go.
He gets reversed through Lonzo and he's kind of a Rockefeller.
You see, Paulson didn't like the way he got choked out there.
Then I get a whole bunch of criteria.
It's interesting.
These guys are going at it pretty well.
Paulson gets Warren for stalling, gets a little bit too high, and they coach Douglas a little bit concerned about the stalling cause.
Listen, I'm going be warning right?
So the rule states, okay, the first time he comes up and lays out in a stalemate from now on here, he's already here.
There's warning.
Okay.
Good explanation.
And Bobby accepted it, but it but it looked like he was coming up for an escape.
You know, I'll try to get a reversal situation, which he did and that got him hot put it to the score first period takedown for Perry, reversal for Paulson.
But no, no, no, no, no.
Can't put it out there.
Can you?
Put it out there.
Easy, guys, now.
Hey, rolling.
Yeah.
No, they do not want Paulson rustling with the legs here.
He drops down on the ankles.
So we've just checked it out.
And in a not advancement do meaning it's not the national duals.
It's not a tournament going forward.
You can't have a a tie.
And so the only way for Iowa to not get beat here is for Mark Perry to come up with a fall.
Don't tell you what Travis Paulson is really.
I'll take it.
All right.
I'll take that one.
I'll take that one.
He stays still.
I'll take that.
Got the takedown reversal.
All right.
I'm out here with 17 seconds here, but puts himself back in the match up to put the front runner drops in L.A., comes up high on the ankle.
Doing a good job of controlling is a cool customer.
Yeah.
Nice job he's got and it is a good job.
That's what the coaches are yellin doing right there.
And 2 seconds, guys.
2 seconds, three states.
Deal now.
Stay still.
Stay still.
Can I go rap?
Go.
Good job defended first period.
Score two to Iowa was a choice.
He said he defers to you.
What do you want to do?
What do you want to do?
You make the call.
Paulson says, I'm going down.
Yeah, and he made that decision here.
The coaching staff were saying, What do you want to do?
Go give them some ownership in his decision.
Here, switch right off the whistle and watch them.
Now, be careful there.
Be careful there.
Be careful there.
What Is he talking to you for there?
He's talking to Paulson about his need.
And they don't understand here that that car Perry is probably one more flexible for rustlers that are out there today.
A lot like Tyler Knicks last year and you'll appreciate this he's got the Smith flexibility.
Yeah he does.
Is that pretty good?
Mark Perry's uncle, John Smith is the one.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I head coach at Oklahoma State of course two time Olympic gold medalist and mean great great And that's another way this meet could in two Let's listen in Princeton thank you for thinking about that second one.
Okay well I think Bobby's concerned about the safety of his Russell don't think he's out losing two points after that.
Now.
Yeah, I love that.
Bono.
It says you go over there one more time, you lose a point.
And this is bottom out there.
Yeah, I think he's.
Director, you got to be concerned about the safety of your Russell Mark Perry.
Right and tough this is got him right in that really tough physical ride Paulson's in survival mode trying to keep his head away from his knee writing time now in favor of Mark Perry warning Rick one green That's the second warning to him.
Does he do?
Yeah.
What do you do?
Oh, pretty tough to move.
Oh, gosh.
He's being dominated right there with that high.
Right.
So he got hurt.
That's hurt.
You got to do it.
Close the gap.
You got to close the gap.
Mark Perry's dad, Mark Perry, was a two time all-American for Oklahoma State.
That's going to come back to create a lot of high flexible passes, really flexible for as strong as they are, because you actually get a locked cradle there.
But it's very difficult, the very heart of it all.
He does very difficult.
Good.
I could tell he has good flexibility.
He's got a wide base.
It could be hard to roll him off that base.
I can't believe most guys would least their hamstring.
You know, that's a that's subject to a real high hamstring pull the way he's trying to muscle out of that.
Oh he's got good flexibility still Coach Mack big ride for Mark Perry 2 minutes and 7 seconds writing time also stalling call Perry up 3 to 2.
They call timeout early every time or not something going on with some blood in his mouth.
Oh so it's not injury time, right?
Okay.
We going to take Coach.
Let's go.
Touchdown Down, down.
Mark Perry from Iowa takes down.
He's up 3 to 2.
Iowa is down by six points.
Perry from Iowa needs to pin his cyclone opponent Travis Poulsen, to tie this meet.
Well this is your last match in the Iowa state dual meet here Carver Hawk I'm Tim Johns along with Jim Gibbons and Dan Gable, bringing you another classic Iowa Iowa State dual meet.
Well, I tell you, cyclones have never beaten the Hawkeyes over here in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Hey, go, right?
That's correct.
Wow.
This is history in the making.
Two years in a row.
Yeah.
Last year, Iowa State snapped a 30 match win streak by Iowa.
And they're on the verge right now, but not sure who's going to be the the guy who stepped up there.
I think in several of them.
I mean, Trent Paulson came out at 57 and, man, yeah, I mean, he didn't end like that, right?
And neither did Passado, but he did the same thing.
Well, I'd say that he did end pretty solid here.
Three shots in the third period.
He answered that pretty well.
So did Paul.
But all eyes now on his brother here, whether he can get the job done against the skilled freshman you got it Is.
I think he's looking for a win yet.
And I don't think he's just trying to win the meeting in there.
No, no, no, no, no.
Hurt Right.
Quick shot title shot covers right foot, but Darrell blocked.
Good showing some slickness there.
Well, there's only 50 seconds left for Perry to take Paulson down and put him on his back.
And pretty that's that's the only way Iowa come out of this without a second loss in a row to Iowa State.
Give this look at this.
Yeah.
We're going to see some more of Perry's flexibility.
Look at this crotch work here.
The locker room crowd getting all excited because they want to see, you know, he puts in force his back, but there's no control yet.
You know.
All right.
Look, much fun head bro.
Drew Griffin.
Oh, well, Mike Scott, I understand a lot of these situations are because Perry's putting himself there.
He's totally comfortable.
Oh, good.
Well, hey, you know, and it all happened at home.
I know.
So I don't know it.
Well, it's kind of matches winding down on one hand, I'm afraid.
Another milestone.
Yeah.
Mark Perry wins the match.
Iowa State wins the meet.
As Jim Gavin's points out, the first time Iowa State's ever beat the Hawkeyes here in Carver, Hawkeye.
And this is the second win in a row, his second win in as many years for Iowa State over the over the Hawkeyes, Iowa State ranked number two in the nation, Iowa ranked number nine.
And the final score is 19 to 16.
And I'll tell you what, Dan, like you said, some Iowa State guys stepped up enough and got the win well up the ball at 25.
And Nakamura, you know, that's an extra right there, you know.
And then again, like in overtime I wrote him out there, I had to go overtime.
So that was the difference.
Yeah.
And then, you know, the Red Bulls coming out and getting a big lead on Joe Johnson.
So, you know, those were all very big.
And also Trevor Smith, you know, coming on was even match for his very came on won by major.
So you know you have to give Iowa State some credit they came in here and they didn't take a back seat and they did a good job.
But I also looked pretty good.
Well, let's talk to Iowa State's Bobby Douglas.
He's with Jim Gibbons.
Thanks, Tim.
I've got Bobby here.
And Bobby was a hard fought victory here.
Now two in a row for the Cyclones here.
You start your own streak.
Well, I think we need to talk about the way those guys wrestled tonight.
I thought both teams wrestled.
Outstanding.
It was a great match.
It's not a streak.
We want to.
We're still in the hole big time.
I think our guys wrestle.
Well, I always got a good young team and they're going to be tough later on.
They really do.
And it was entertaining right from the start.
They came out here and battled you pretty hard.
They had some, you know, inexperienced guys come out here and give some of your All-Americans.
Some pretty good goes well.
I think it was a great meet.
I think that it was a battle of will and a battle of skill.
And you can judge for yourself who had the most.
Well, big, big job out there by Trent Paulson coming out there.
That match against Joe Johnston.
That was a great match.
It was a terrific match.
Could be a semifinals or a finals in the national tournament.
They wrestle like that.
Well, we're just getting going here for the season.
We're excited about it six more meets and well, we'll see you the rest the way out.
Thank you.
Go, cyclones.
There you have it to.
Thank you, Jim.
Thank you, Jim, and congratulations to Bobby Douglas as a battle will in a battle of skill.
And that's what the sport is all about.
Damn.
Yeah.
It's it's funny.
That guy, you know, he was at Arizona State for many years, the Sun Devil, you know.
And of course, he was back at Iowa State when I was there, Coach Douglas.
But then, you know, he's he's out there.
And that was a matt I mean, that keeps you in the sport right there.
You know, there's a lot of great wrestling.
And, you know, here I am, I'm on the sidelines, but I'm in the sport.
You know, I'm calling the match with you, but I'm also promoting the sport.
But that's why right there, this is the reason why we're promoting it.
It's a great entertainment.
You know, I just hope that both these teams continue to make good progress because, you know, knowing better, this is their number one and number when they're going against each other and every weight has top guys ranked, that's one thing better.
That's what we got to look forward to in the future, hopefully.
Well, I love being with these guys.
Hall of Famer Dan and Jim Gibbons.
We're all in it because we love this sport.
Once again, the final score is Iowa State 19 and Iowa 16.
Thanks for watching.
