Their only loss, an 18 to 1 record, has come at the end of the Iowa Hawkeyes, 19 of 14.
Earlier this year, Iowa would have been ranked number one all season, had a winning streak of 34 consecutive dual victories snapped by Oklahoma their last time out, a loss to drop the defending NCAA champs down to the number two spot.
And today, a full house of 13,000 has braved a blizzard to jam the Iowa Fieldhouse to watch this rematch of national powers, Iowa and Iowa State.
Hello, everybody.
My name is Doug Brown, and here is Dr. Lonnie Timmerman, the coach of the Drake University Bulldog wrestling team.
And we're going to bring you this rematch of two tremendous national powers, which it seems to me are have proved themselves pretty much the cream of the crop in the national rankings this year.
We can attest to that.
We opened against Iowa and then followed that up with Iowa State in December.
They beat us by the identical same score.
And as they've been switching throughout the year between number one and number two, I've had a number of people say, who's number one?
I think it's what night of the week they're going to be wrestling is going to make the difference.
Dog Well, since they're wrestling today or you got a prediction, I would say that right now I would pick Iowa.
Since Kelly Ward's not wrestling at 142 and Santana probably will not wrestle one night.
This will hurt them quite a bit.
He has a knee injury, correct?
Right.
He does.
He has knee injury.
It'll be interesting to see that £150 clip match, how that comes out between a three time Big eight champion and a national champion at 177.
Chris Campbell for Iowa, going against Willie Gadson should be a fantastic Those two matches should just be incredible.
There are several others that could be really fine.
Iowa against Iowa State coming right up into from the University of Iowa field house in Iowa City.
I Eben brings you the Iowa state versus Iowa wrestling meet with Doug Brown and Lonnie Timmerman from this game.
And here we go.
Here we go with the first match, £118.
Lonnie, Johnny Jones has yet to lose a match this year.
He's a tough young customer.
He's up against Keith Mahlum.
John Miles is probably one of the more unorthodox wrestlers we're going to see this evening.
He's certainly very talented.
He was national junior college champion, but because he's wrestled so very much freestyle, we'll see him do a lot of things that might not be normal for most.
There you see the records of the two teams, Iowa 13 and one, Iowa State, 18 and one.
The Cyclones only loss was to Iowa, Iowa and the Iowa loss was just recently to Oklahoma.
And that's not easy to do, not hard to do to lose to Oklahoma down there.
Very cruel.
Meyer feels that that loss might really have helped him prepare for the Nationals as Jones taking the first shot of the match toward the leg.
He likes to get those legs.
He also likes to counter a great deal Johnny Jones, who is a junior against Keith Moeller and see Jones trying to use his strength upper body attempted a head shot there.
I'm standing in like a rock.
They're using a square match, you know, tonight.
That's interesting.
The reason for that being is there's a preliminary match between the athletes in action in the Iowa Hockey Club and this match primarily was used for freestyle type of wrestling.
The referee is Keith Young, who was a great wrestler at his day and is now a high school coach in Iowa.
And Cedar Falls High School is a fine official like I believe he's worked the last ten NCAA championships.
So I think he'll be working there again this year.
We have 40 seconds left to go in the first period.
Now Jones takes a leg shot and doesn't get it, countered right there and right to the center of the match.
You can see the 30 Iowa State in the red, Jones in the red, the scarlet Harlem comes in on the leg.
But Jones likes to counter off that single leg.
Warren has a leg, but Jones is trying to work around behind.
He has 11 seconds left.
10 seconds looks as if the stalemate calls with 4 seconds left with a lot more stalemates this year.
Rodney.
But in the past, it seems to me and that's I think it's really help wrestling just that, hey, there's the end of the first period.
Any time you go through the opening period against a good stand up wrestler like Jones and don't lose any points zero zero, you're in very good shape.
The Iowa State Boy Jones starts down him is up three minute period.
Jones stays down.
He'll try to come in for two tight waist in the arm crutch that Malek is using as a standard.
Right.
Jones likes to roll now up and around.
That's one for Jones.
The first points the the first coin Jones of Iowa State with 230 left in the second period gets an escape one to nothing.
Now they're back on their feet again and £18 Jones on your right Harlem on the left before a capacity crowd at the Iowa Fieldhouse.
Moreland 2 minutes to Carter and Jones you notice Jones start by leg off style.
He likes to leave that leg and he'll actually give the single leg to people if he can hit 40 left now.
And the second he doesn't want to do too much, they're just trying to up, You got to hit control, keep.
Now there's a warning from Kessler's young warning to both wrestlers for stalling.
And that is also a call a good deal more this year than it has been right now.
Moylan goes down.
His single leg was not very deep.
Jones fought it off on arm.
Shocked, Jones counters it for a head shot.
Still want nothing ever approaching the one minute left mark in the second period managed by one gets in deep on the leg in deep and has to let go of it more.
I'm counting it very well.
One or nothing.
47 seconds left.
Johnny Jones on the left of Iowa State, undefeated this year, ranked number one in the country.
A single leg by Moore.
Love a counter with a whizzer by Jones, all in good position, but Jones has a good whizzer and he is up the arm over the wizard standard.
Counter to that kind of a single leg of thrust.
13 seconds left in the second period.
Jones has not been quite so active as I might have thought, and he's not using reckless abandon.
I think he's he's feeling the pressure of this match tonight, his sixth match.
They've got to win.
Iowa State has to take the first two very, very important.
You got to take care of Meyer out there on his by 50 wins seven losses in five draws in dual meets in his four years at Iowa.
He was a national champion at Iowa at £177.
Now one two nothing more of them can even it up by escaping.
Jones can get those legs in.
He's a very good leg, man, but he didn't have legs.
You can get his legs and work for the Cross-Body riding with a leg over roll by.
Mahlum Jones stays behind Now the head up.
He's got Jones awfully high, but Jones gets the top scissor on This is about enough and that is good for quite a little bit of riding time.
We might mention, Doug, that that writing time in college is in opposition to high school.
Most high school states do not have that steel and that if you can tell me just excuse me, there are a lot of young hall of stalemate.
And if one of the men half a minute or more riding time, which is holding the man in control, he would gain a point for that and could win the match.
So writing times are very definitely important factor in this particular match.
Another attempt at a roll.
Jones coming behind him is up rolling as he comes.
Jones holding on all him is doing the moving sign for Graham B roll there Doug If he holds that leg and sets back through, he could end up with a lot of points, but he can come back through it.
The man Jones is in no trouble.
BE Oh, he counters with that, holding on to that single leg.
Now here's Jones finally getting out on top again.
Keith Young was very careful not to call anything too soon in that situation.
Johnny Jones now has a minute writing time got out of the writing time, which would be worth a point, even though all of might escape a minute 24 seconds left to go, all arm wrestling, a strong match, however, and definitely a threat.
I can see Jones up in that leg Grapevine and Keith Young very quickly calls a stalemate here.
There's a lot of mat area in the square mat and boys are going to have to stay out there and go at it a minute and 7 seconds left in the match, £118 Iowa against Iowa State.
Iowa State's Johnny Jones is preparing to set up on top.
There is more of I'm ready.
Keep you on the referee somebody.
Jones It was Jones.
Now they're ready again.
Immediately, more and more the switch comes around and JONES And the rhythm actually scores to the one the right Yes, 46 seconds left.
But if Maryland could take Jones down, he can win.
And Jones, of course, has to keep working because he's already been warned for stalling.
Harlem takes a shot.
A lot of boys have lost in this situation when actually ahead by failing.
There is a mistake by Harlem and Jones has put Harlem on his back.
Nothing called so far.
No controller yell control, no control role.
Oh, oh.
Harlem has put Jones out.
Jones is still on top and there are 3 seconds to run and 30 and up upset Keith Moreland, the winner.
Three, two, one, three two, two.
The writing time for Jones, The first loss of the year for Johnny Jones of Iowa State, and that was one Miami that the Cyclones had to have.
And they're both off on the shoulders of his teammates.
There's a souffle that Johnny Jones is trying.
It did work successfully, however, what Johnny Jones was caught on was that row right there, and that cost five and now £126.
And Iowa starts with a big advantage.
They went one they didn't expect to win.
And here it's Bob Antonacci for Iowa State against McDonnell, Mike MacDonnell of Iowa.
And this could be a very good match.
This is a this could be close, very tough win.
If you looked at the record books, you'd say that since Hannah Knox, she's been twice fifth in the nation, he should win this.
Actually, I think that an anomaly would be chosen to be a winner.
He's very good with a single leg, double leg.
He's outstanding with the Wizard, of course.
You figure right now the difference could very well come with an Iowa boy who's riding on the crest of that emotion of his 118 pounders, winning the £18 match is so important in college match, he sets the tempo.
And I have a feeling that Iowa has more than just three points.
They have some momentum going for him at this point.
This this match is going to be very important that the Bob and an Aussie win Bob added Archie as Lonnie said as finished twice in the Nationals, he seems to be a very good tournament wrestler and he's strong, strong, solid, difficult to penetrate.
Both boys sort of having at each other was nothing too serious so far.
There was an attempt at a double leg by MacDonald and Archie fights off at about 35 seconds left to go in the first period, 30 seconds, right on the left.
MacDonald On the right, you can see in the background the two Iowa State coaches, Dale Barr and Harold Nichols, are they're not too happy after that opening match, you said there was a big blizzard.
That was going to be my comment.
I think we should mention that Iowa State wasn't really sure they could get here for this match.
And there's a tremendous blizzard and not until maybe 4 hours before the match they know it was going to come off.
I think Iowa State probably arrived an hour before here in Iowa City and started about 13,000 people as I was driving or told my wife, there's the end of the first period and there's more than a thousand people there.
I'll be surprised, I guess Iowa fans and wrestling fans in general go through any kind of weather to get to a meet like this.
The match is still scoreless as the third period begins the second period and an starts on top trying to control MacDonnell and and Oshie is also considered a good rider.
He rides with that tight waist and likes to stay down low on the leg.
As you see if he can trap the leg, the ankle right.
He's all right.
But he couldn't do it that time.
And up and out comes McDonald one to nothing.
He leads one to nothing.
And he has considerable riding time and a notch.
He's going to take him down, actually, to tie the match at this point.
That's right there.
Back to the center.
He started to say, if you join us late, Keith Moore, I'm upset.
Johnny Jones, 3 to 2 with a takedown right near the end of the match and then £118 clash and I actually tried to penetrate, couldn't like I spoke of Dan Gable a moment.
I wonder if we should let our audience know who he is or if everybody in the United States knows exactly who Dan Gable is.
Well, he he has at one time represented both of these schools, and he's represented the United States gold medal winner in the Olympics.
Now there's a startling warning against an announcer, which is an unusual thing for a wrestler behind one, an athlete.
And it's the first time it's a warning.
Second time, it's a point.
There is a beautiful move by an announcer in deep and over.
And he leads 2 to 1, but actually is right in time for MacDonald.
So it's virtually a tie right now.
A minute and 23 seconds left to go and an actually has to hold him all the way out for a tie.
Otherwise he'll have to take him down again.
Here comes the boxing.
Try to go for the pin.
If he could have held, he would have taken a step out, put his arm over the head and gone for the pin.
There's an analogy now.
It's it would be interesting to know here what he's going to try to put him over, whether he might let him up and try to take him down again, because a draw here will not give him any good up.
He comes to the two, it's 2 to 2 and there is a riding time advantage.
So actually, Marlon or rather MacDonald has a virtual one point advantage here.
It's 2 to 2 with riding time.
And so with 50 seconds left, it'll be the takedown.
Besides it probably here.
Antonacci On the right in the read of Iowa State University ranked currently first and anarchy and deep countered by wizard goes for the other arm tries to use his strength on MacDonald tries to drive in the ring 24 seconds left 24 seconds and an archer trying to put pressure on it if he can.
He controls the leg.
He's trying for that to roll through that.
He's got to break that up.
He gets it down there, bring him down to the mat.
6 seconds.
He's got to bring it to the mat and he'll never, ever get it.
And that's going to mean and it looks to me as if it's with 3 seconds left that it's going to mean another victory for Iowa.
Heath Young chased a couple of the Iowa State wrestlers off the edge of the mat one second and 30.
Mike MacDonald by virtue of one minute of riding time at the point and defeats Bob Antonacci 3 to 2 and Iowa takes a second.
But I think Lee there's a set up Harris is trying to control brings the hips up turn in one point for this kick dog that's really using notches move to beat him that's his movement.
So now here we are at £134.
Iowa's differences.
This is an outstanding 134 pounder.
He's been a Big Ten champion twice.
Paul Bartlett at £134 is probably a little bit late for this weight.
There it is, a little bit light on his back on his back with a pancake right away.
Bartlett is generally considered good on his feet, but he got pancaked immediately by Suzuki, and Iowa gives the impression they want to walk away with this right at the right from the beginning, a minute and 30 seconds left, and Suzuki has Bartlett in a bad spot.
You can see that already.
It's already a five point move, two points for the takedown and three for the nearfall that Keith Young is watching.
It takes one second on the mat, the back, on the back, the shoulder blades on the mat.
Scapula.
One second.
Bartlett has the left shoulder up one, and it takes a lot of strength out of a fellow to have to hold it that way to where less than a minute left we can see the strain on both of these men.
Iowa wants very badly to go into the nationals with the number one ranking.
Again, they want that momentum as they go in to Doug for all the Iowa team and the coaches and are up on the edge of the mat and their feet trying to find the secret weight over there.
Key to getting Suzuki on on the way to the pin 24 seconds and Bartlett is still in the near-fall position he's been in from the first 5 seconds of this match.
13 seconds, 12, 11, nine, seven.
Now Suzuki trying to bring the other arm over for three two and it will not be a pin in the first period, but it's a five point move.
And here's what happens.
The pancake kind of gets him to push in his back beautifully.
The score remains unchanged on the second period, and as the last period begins, the score is still 5 to 0 for Tim Suzuki.
Suzuki has 4 minutes and 53 seconds of riding time, and they've only been wrestling for 5 minutes.
Here's the first chance for Bartlett to get on top.
Suzuki shaken him out and sets up Paul Bartlett.
Two years ago, he was wrestling at 118 and I'm sure he let Suzuki up on purpose because he's not going to gain anything by trying to ride it.
610 I think now that's an extra point for Suzuki.
Six to nothing.
Iowa leading Iowa State Suzuki took a leg, shot.
He knows that Bartlett likes to use that move he tried to initiate there, which is a fireman's carry, and maybe I'll check off it onto a high crotch series or something of that sort.
He's been trained on that.
The first time Bartlett tried it in the first period, Suzuki pancaked it 2 minutes and 12 seconds later, Keith Young sends him back to the center.
£134 out of season.
How much is that money?
About 150.
Yeah, I would.
I would think so.
I don't think that Paul Bartlett really has to got that much weight.
I believe he's really a 26 £126 US.
Suzuki has wrestled at 26 in the past two.
This year he's at 134.
He leads here six zero.
There is such a thing as a major decision or a superior decision this year in collegiate wrestling.
So once you get past, you get up to eight points, an eight point difference in the two wrestlers.
You can pick up extra points for the team.
The background, you can see Gary Curl Meyer yelling to Suzuki to go for the takedown.
They want that takedown so they can win by eight or more, which would give them 14 points in opposition.
In the normal three, if you win by 12 points or more, your team receives five points.
Of course, if you clean the opponent, your team receives six points.
Well, there's still some good matches coming up here.
We have £150.
Chuck Jagow The national champion at Iowa against Pete Galea, no points guard that was on the edge of the mat.
We have a minute and 4 seconds left.
Iowa State boys haven't had a lot of lot to shout about so far.
Iowa has really come in here and one started strong.
We're less than a minute away from the end of this match, heard Suzuki reaching for a rock before the double leg.
Bartlet's really just holding him off.
He'd like to.
He'd like to be able to take him down.
But to avoid a takedown of 1.0, come on.
Bartlett tried to go under the legs.
Leg 26 seconds.
There is what Bartlett likes to do.
He gets to the single leg with 23 seconds left.
20 countering with Whizzer, not going for the other leg, and they're out of bounds.
12 seconds left.
Single leg used to be considered quite a weapon, Lonnie, but now a lot of coaches out of school, they let their boy take this, let the other fellow have the single leg because there are so many things you can do against it.
That man that was in the picture just a mile to go, Dan Gable, says that in clinics this is important.
Doug, 5 seconds and you could take him to the mat.
No chance.
No chance.
What is going to be a second?
Well, it'll be a seven to nothing victory with a riding time, seven pass.
There's no score.
And zero for Paul Bartlett.
And Iowa leads Iowa State nine to nothing.
And Iowa State hope to get 13.
Doug, here's the counter.
Here's a counter from the high crotch thing from crawling out and Brad Smith goes over the whizzer, over the arm stepping down.
That's how our £242 and Brad Smith offset Brad Smith, one of Iowa's best wrestlers, Randy Nielson at £142 for Iowa State.
He's wrestling.
Kelli Ward, a very fine freshman for Iowa State, has not been able to make weight at all at 42 for quite a while.
And Nielsen on the left is filling in for him.
Brad Smith, an outstanding £142 of Iowa.
Nielsen is good on his feet, Doug.
He's had a soft shoulder injury slowing Russell a couple times this Christmas Smith overpowered him in that exchange and it's two to nothing Iowa leads Nielsen goes on a roll.
His high school coach was Iowa State's assistant coach here Dale Barr.
And one of his specialties was a roll.
So not surprisingly, Nielsen likes to use it.
Smith, who likes to ride up high and tight with that deep waist.
Smith Attacks from the top.
He'll wear you down and try to go for the fall.
He's a he hustles every minute he's out there.
He's he's a better that is a definite possibility for a place in the Nationals.
5 seconds left here at 32 seconds of riding time for Smith.
Nielsen turns in, Smith stays with him, Nielsen goes down and tries to roll.
Cameron best stand with him up there now roll and out and Nielsen comes out with one point and it's not been given yet because he may be able to turn into a reversal out of bounds.
It's one that's game.
Nielsen Keith Young didn't call out until he saw what Nielsen did with a hold.
It's 2 to 1, Smith leaves.
He got 53 seconds of riding time, by the way, so he's 7 seconds away from a potential point.
Brad Smith is a senior at Iowa, one of an outstanding group.
He came in here to work with Gary Curdle Meyer and Dan Gable Smith countering Nielsen single leg very well.
He really just powered him off at nine to nothing Iowa leads.
They won the first three matches here and I think Iowa State hope to get here.
They didn't.
Iowa State felt that they had to have the 118 and 126.
Here's the counter to the single leg.
Then Brad goes in to the double leg.
Try there's a counter try for a counter with a whizzer.
And Brad simply powers Randy Nielsen over with a forward motion second period.
Smith starts in the bottom.
He's out right now and then goes right to it.
Nielsen counters and comes around behind and gets the two.
It's three three and another reversal.
So that was a legitimate reverse followed by another legitimate reverse.
And it's five three after that exchange, two for each man.
SMITH comes back to a two point lead with riding time.
Nielsen tries to turn in on the edge of the net with 2 minutes and 25 seconds left, right in front of the Iowa State bench, and they're out of bounds.
Jack Nielsen has a nosebleed here, and we're going to call time just for a minute, go over and mess up one of those nice clean towels injury.
Now go ahead under Nielsen.
Oh, here's the the move that Brad Smith used after he came out with the escape.
He went right back in trying to go for the takedown.
Randy Nielsen countered Snap, the bound down drug behind the arm went the opposite way for the for the reversal.
Immediately, Brad Smith comes back, sets out, reaches over the head, turns, brings his arm through, moves quickly for another reversal.
So there was an exchange of two points per man.
And those moves 5 to 3.
Now we're back to live action again.
And Nielsen is out immediately after that.
Start from the center, 2 minutes and 13 seconds left in the second period and the score is 5 to 4.
And now Smith leading by a point, got wrapped in the nose.
I think on that exchange he's okay.
Smith has a minute and 23 seconds writing time Go Nielsen has been wrestling largely at £134 in his career at Iowa State.
He's had a shoulder injury this year, and since he's come back, he's been at 142.
They needed help there.
Since word is seems to be growing and having difficulty making that weight.
I mean, at 45, 5 to 4, Smith leading in the second period a single leg by Smith try to sweep the other leg out to two point takedown for Smith's seven two for the deep waist.
Nelson wants to roll or sit out or switch or something.
There's a roll comes out behind he's even young hasn't called it yet.
Now he does escape.
Look for a moment as if Nielsen might be able to go behind him.
A minute.
9 seconds left.
Second period, the score is 7 to 5 and Smith has a riding time advantage, amounting to about a minute and a half.
Back to the center, Randy Nielsen on the left adjusting his headgear.
Brad Smith on the right.
Now it's Iowa against Iowa State, the two top ranked wrestling teams in the country have each been rated number one this year, Iowa all season until just recently when Oklahoma upset Iowa.
Norman And so the Hawkeyes come here stinging at being second for the first time.
They want to be number one going to the Nationals.
Smith shoots and gets a single leg.
Nielsen trying to counter wizard putting pressure on that Whizzer and comes out ever no takedown 23 seconds left 20 seconds one We're in the second period Smith Nielsen of Iowa State on the right.
Smith on the left.
We're only a couple of seconds away from the end of this period.
But now the situation like this, where Iowa State has lost a couple of matches, they hadn't expected, it would appear that it's going to cause Iowa State to take a few chances later on there.
There's a single leg wizard attempt to counter by Randy Nielsen.
Brad just elevates his leg as high as he can and pulls or pulls that whizzer arm the tape for two point takedown.
Now back to live action again In the third period, Smith starts on top.
Brad Smith, I guess.
Randy Nielsen, a sophomore of Iowa State.
Smith had to go down to the ankle to hold onto it.
This often results in a stalemate.
There it is.
Stalemate.
They to take a little longer to call that.
It's been a good thing that the referees around the country are are thinking of the fans.
Really when they call that Nielsen gets to the sit out position by the hand fights 7 to 5 this leads it has riding time.
He also would like to get out to take takedown and there is a stall called against Smith the first time it's called it's a warning.
We had that call earlier in the evening.
Jorgensen This in the rulebook that stated it's part of the top man's responsibility to take the man to the mat, work for the ball.
He's got to try to take him down.
Oh, he'll go back into that one.
He's out.
Oh, he did 90 points escape for 1.0 points.
And now, of course, there's some disagreement there among the Iowa fans like to see Nielsen.
Call it like this has given a couple of their foul points for that Keith Young's opinion he didn't deserve them.
SMITH Again, and with a single leg leading 7 to 6, Nielsen trying to counter on the edge of the mat.
Now the Whizzer out of bounds.
No, no, not on about a 30 minute thought.
I heard a whistle there somewhere.
A lot of thought.
Randy Nielsen to tie this match up with the takedown.
He's behind 7 to 6.
His opponent has riding time in a takedown for two points.
Would tie it up a minute and a half left in this match.
This is one Iowa expects to win.
This could be a very important match for Iowa State if Randy Nielsen could come back.
However, now Nielsen behind him trying to hold on.
He's too high.
He's too high.
Brad Smith did a very excellent thing there, Doug.
And staying on the offense, the worst thing a wrestler can do is when he knows his opponent needs to take down to win is to go on the defensive.
Look good offense is the best defense 9 to 6 now Smith leads 9 to 6 and padding to win it with a riding time.
Nielsen escapes with 49 seconds left.
It's 9 to 7 now.
Really at this position, Nielsen doesn't doesn't probably expect to put Smith on his back.
So we have to take him down twice in this last 3 to 3 quarters of a minute.
But Smith can't back away much because if he gets caught for stalling, it's a point.
Single leg by Smith who went to the attack and 211 to 7 for Smith.
As Loni said, that's the way you take care of a man who's trying to get back.
16 seconds.
Another roll.
Iowa is looking to go up here by 12 points.
Nielsen escapes, but the score is 11 to 8 with 3 seconds left.
And there it is.
Iowa wins its fourth straight match against Iowa State, 12 to 8.
And the score is Iowa 12, Iowa State, nothing.
Here's that good offense of Brad Smith's.
It appears that Grant is going to counter as he sprawls, throws his leg back.
Brad Shepard goes in for fireman's.
Gary pulls his head out.
National champion and by keeping the offense on really control here's here's a match that many people would say is the feature match on this card it's the nation Chuck Yeager, the national champion £150 last year from Iowa, and Pete Gallia, who has been a three time Big eight champion for Iowa State and placed fourth in the Nationals last year.
They have almost identical records this year, one loss apiece.
Gallia is known as a tough hitter.
Yeah, it is a very solid mistake for a wrestler.
Man that capitalizes on any mistake you make on the mat.
Gallia has a tendency to be careless and he knows it.
He That's the way he that's the way he wins.
Jaguar is more solid.
I think these are his boys are about even to the last time they met was last so far as I remember was last year in the Nationals and yeah, Logan that was the first time I believe he'd beaten Gallia.
They have drawn in the past 1 to 1 and one of these dummies one minute.
Gallia They're both seniors.
Chuck Yeager on the left of Iowa.
Iowa leads in the dual meet 12 to zip single by Gallia beat Gallia has a good single like Oh nice nice maneuver there by Jacquelyn try to counter it try to counter with a with a Crossface and Gallia holds onto the other leg.
It's got to go through the back.
He's trying to go through the back that he can bring him to the mat now and he does to, to take there he goes for the cradle to cradle.
Here's Gallia has a cradle.
Oh he lost the cradle and gotten his back.
That's too far.
Yeah.
And he has Kali on his back.
That's what you mean by the way.
Gallia wrestles rather carelessly out 3.5 to 2 at the end of the first period.
That's what you'd call typical of each of these men.
I say Gallia scores on escape in the second period and at the start of the third period, the angler leads 5 to 3.
Gallia on the top is a completely different kind of rider.
He has the killer instinct.
He tries to get the cradle on everybody ride tough and pin him and yeah, showed why he's a national champion.
623 Now An escape by Chucky Aguilar of Iowa.
2 minutes and a half left in the third period here.
Iowa State has really looked flat, actually in the first four matches, although Randy Nielsen put up a good battle, 142 Hawkeyes have been stable, wrestled all right to the end and have looked good right at the end of the matches for this time of the year.
You expect them to look that way with the Nationals coming up and everybody's conditioning working up to a peak.
I think we must respect Coach Nichols for coming here tonight, having to battle snow and go through all that miserable, weathered all the hesitation and all of the match really going on or not.
Guagua in cross.
He would like to Gallia would like to.
I have a suspicion he would like to see YAG would take a chance here at Stanford, but he's not going to take a chance.
He just that was almost a wall me around again, really.
Two points for Jaguar, who now leads 8 to 3 and I think you're going to see Gallia taking some chances here.
Pete wants to go for a roll.
He'd like to have the rope and get the big the big move reverse and go right into the points.
Most apparent Chuck isn't going to allow it.
He's riding very steadily, carefully leads 823 and he has riding time.
Well, whatever the outcome here, everybody knows that the Nationals are a different story.
So many times.
And Gary, Colonel Meyer and his crew, they got to defend their national title this year and they know that their principal, probably their principal rival, will be this Iowa State team.
Gallia, unable to handle Jagger, who is showing his skill as a writer.
Everywhere his opponent goes, he goes.
Only 41 seconds left here.
You see Gallia staying down.
He wants to try to get some kind of mistake if he can roll.
But yeah, Agler was 26 seconds left, is very, very balanced.
And Pete looks just plain tired to me like Jagger, riding him hard.
I guess I could go back to that idea of not knowing you're going to wrestle until few hours long ride to Iowa City.
One second.
There it is.
Chuck Zeigler, defending national champion at £150.
The winner, 9 to 3.4 riding time over Pete Galea of Iowa State.
Here's Chuck Yeager Riding Pete.
Now have a three minute break.
Using his normal kind of control, trying to do what he goes into.
This is Pete's move actually trying to use that cradle on the far side.
Pete tries to roll.
He was hoping for some big move, but the angle is just to too sharp.
That's his way of winning, too, to counter those moves.
At 158, it's Joe Sussman of Iowa State and Mike McGovern of Iowa.
Just pan leads to zero on a takedown.
McGovern starts on top.
Mike McGovern It's a battle of two Iowa former Iowa high school wrestlers.
Doug That's when Joe's US band mate took Mike McGovern to the mat.
He used a cross body.
Right now, Mike McGovern's using that on a Joe Cross-Body ride with a leg grapevine.
And often that move is called any more and it often becomes a stalemate situation.
And that's what happened there.
They say the Cross-Body ride's a real good place to stall in where the rules are interpreted.
Now, Doug, I don't know if we really give the man it's a good leg wrestle the opportunity to show what he can do with it.
Again, you see the leg grapevine business man has his arm in there.
Now, this will be a stalemate to 216 left.
I spent on the bottom and on the top.
They'll go with the whistle.
Just bam!
Sits out.
I like to roll and come out with something.
Mcgivern working hard in the Half Nelson to try to keep us man from doing what he did.
Stand up.
Now McCarron brings it back to the mat again is Iowa boys ride?
Well, they got it behind.
They've hung on.
Well.
And then at 44, Zach Spann leads to nothing.
But how does that start?
Stalemates call.
There are about a minute and a half left.
You see the Iowa coaches, Dan Gable on the left, Gary, Colonel Meyer on the right that's been against this up goes for the head.
That's the spin on it.
But the difference stays with him.
Now suspend rolls and comes out on top.
He has a mcgivern in a potentially difficult situations and McGibbon is holding on and decides to let go and come out without any near-fall problems for nothing.
That's been on the second of two moves as it often happens, comes out on top.
And then it's 7 seconds left in the second period he has mcgivern flattened out.
I would like to get an r mike Mcgivern trailing four to nothing.
This is the first time an Iowa wrestler has been behind this far in this meet.
So far, the Hawks lead 15 to nothing.
The Hawks, the defending national champions, have come out and won the first five matches against Iowa State, now potentially potentially dangerous hold.
And so is that Aspen a shoulder let it up will start again in the center given one of the stand up just bend, grab the ankle.
You'll have to come up off that pretty quick.
And that's one way to do it.
Those into the late Grapevine and the far ankle now wants to work on the upper body suspension on top.
At the end of the period we go into the third period.
Now, neither man has writing time, although man has an advantage of about 33 seconds, about half a minute.
Harold Nichols, looking for his team's first first victory here in his £158 match up out against McIver.
Just man starts on top, manages to block McGovern's switch attempt McGovern looking for the combination.
Somebody who's using a tight waist goes to the ankle in the back and now stalling has called off suspend for going to that really guarded ankle I think for two and you're supposed to go up to the upper body and try to pin the man because of the rules.
It's difficult to pin holding on to an ankle.
Yeah.
He must move up here again to suspend, leading to afforded nothing.
He now has a more than 10 minutes of riding time given so far has not been able to get away from it.
That's been a very strong rider on the left arm, deep waist and elbow crunch on that nearside max.
There's a head lever to put his head down on the mat.
There is a lever standing less than 2 minutes left in the in the meat of the match.
Now stalling is called again on dustpan.
And that's a point for him.
Again, here's the replay of McGovern trying to come out this report from Columbus with Ohio State 64 control, 69.
Now it's 4 to 1.
Just bad will have to work a little harder, according to QPR, getting it six straight free throws at the last minute to ice.
The Iowa victory dustpan with a tight waist against McIver.
It's 4 to 1 and he's going to have to come up again.
He's going to have to come up.
He uses the ankle to break his man down, but he has to turn.
He has to make something out of it.
And again, he's going to be called for a point for for stalling, for a given and dustpan shaking his head.
He doesn't know what what that means for two.
And it's cut considerably out 4 to 2 just bad has riding time but mcgivern was given a good shot now and Dustpan is going to let him up.
Harold Nichols called in to let him up for two three.
He just figures that Dustpan can take him down.
A minute and 4 seconds left, one minute, 4 to 3 with a riding time advantage.
That's span against McIver and a stalemate.
Stalemate?
Iowa leads the Hawks lead 15 to nothing here.
They've won the first five matches by decision and en route beat a couple of pretty fair Iowa State wrestlers shot on a single just bend countering it 32 seconds left in a takedown would be a tie.
A takedown would be a draw as Aspen has to fight his way out of this, if he can help them to hold on to the victory out of 216 seconds left, 15 seconds left.
Now dustpan has to come out of here with 15 seconds.
McGovern leads on the scoreboard, 5 to 4.
Here's that single leg by Mike McGovern.
He very nearly had the takedown at that point.
He has to bring them bring Joe down to the mat, bring his 40 points to the mat.
We get back to live action here, kick through now.
We have 620 seconds left to go in live action.
Here is dustpan gets away.
He wins on writing time.
But the Kevin is holding on 10 seconds dustpan trying to go.
Now Gibson has the legs in.
It's going to be a draw.
And once again, as it happened at Ames, as it happened today, Ames, Mike McGovern takes down an Iowa State cyclones in the last seconds to get a draw.
Two points for each team, at least 17 to 2.
We move to £167 with Dan Wagman of Iowa and Dave Powell of Iowa State, with Wagman leading 2 to 1 at the start of the second period.
Iowa State in the last seven years has won four national titles under Dr. Harold Nichols.
They finished fourth, two years in a row.
That's the best record of any school in nation in that period of time.
Powell starts on top, leading 2 to 1, and there is a dangerous, dangerous hole that he could have hurt the league.
That's a good call for his home.
As we mentioned, Wagman has the very, very unorthodox moves he's exciting to watch, rolling in class, to go out the back door and also difficult to wrestle.
Yes, he's a little quicker than Powell, and that situation is speed ahead, advantage to 3 to 2.
Now, Wagman leads his first two point.
It's called to the mat and Powell wants time out.
He hit his head on the mat.
He wants time injury and he is hazed here.
Wagman is a senior, Doug, and you can see that he he has the ability to control the match.
He has all the moves break that could be there to be interpreted as an illegal throw, as when you take the man from the mat, you're responsible for his safe return to the mat.
Back in many, many years ago, he used to interpret, If you had one knee down the mat, you could bring him down with all velocity You care to.
However, as the offensive wrestler, the man control you're responsible for the for your opponent's safe return to the mat.
There was, however, nothing illegal in that.
Oh oh seems to have shaken it off.
It was 29 seconds left, 3 to 2 at £167.
Waxman of Iowa riding against Powell goes into the grapevine in the leg, standing, lifts him.
Can't get the leg in this time now goes to the other side.
Powell takes the leg.
He can't fall back with him, hurt it, and now up goes Wagner into the scissors on top.
And it's just exactly where Wagman wants him to get those legs in.
It takes a lot of the stamina out of the man.
He'll be stalemate.
It used to be before it was called more tougher than it is now that a man could ride up on top for a whole period like that and not really get anywhere.
Just got pile up riding time.
Wagman has a leg in and Powell has Wagoner's leg.
Waggle is always interesting because he gets into these unorthodox situations minute and a half, 130 whack.
I'm still in a position of advantage.
Stalemate and stalemate is called by Keith and says, I'm not going to get anything out of that situation.
A minute and a quarter left in the second period, 3 to 2.
WAGMAN Leading and riding on top.
He's working on riding time.
He has about 25 seconds worth advantage here.
Lifts power, continues to ride him, counters him well.
Kyle puts the arm in there, you see, to keep that leg from going all the way in.
One of the weaknesses that Powell probably has had is that his ability to come out from the bottom.
Of course, when you're a as outstanding as he was in high school and as strong as he was, you're not very often on the bottom.
Illinois 51st and Gable, 1972, gold medal winner at 149 and a half in the Olympic rings and a two time national champion at Iowa State, coaching against his old school.
Tonight, he's been at Iowa in large part responsible for this remarkable ability of the Iowa team to win.
There's a stark warning against Wagner, warning this is going to make it difficult for Wagner now to change.
His style of wrestling is to use those legs.
He's going to have to break David Powell down.
We're working toward the ball.
35 seconds left In the second period, Wagman has had an outstanding record this year.
I'll look for him.
He's a definite prospect.
And there's a stalemate.
That's stalemate came at a very opportune time for my family.
I don't care if he doesn't care.
These men are both prospects for places in the Nationals, too, depending how things go.
Yes, they are up again, up high.
Wang spins from right here.
He doesn't see it.
He's crazy.
We're here and now we're going for three.
Carter and Byron time and again.
A point this time he calls Wagman for stalling and Jerry Turtle Myers on his feet.
One point.
That's a point.
And it ties the match at three three.
Although Wagman does have riding time.
Three, three Powell against Wagner, the £167.
Now you can see Wagman holding on at the end of the period.
Now we go to the third period at 167.
Powell Be on top.
It's three three.
But Wagman has about a minute and 48 seconds of riding time now.
That's right.
I guess it's Wagman on top again.
Let's see if he's hesitant to put his legs so I can let him up.
He let him up.
Powell calls time.
Powell is excellent on his speed is extremely quick.
Powell is 43 and wagon Waxman's that seasoned veteran out there dug it he sees not apparently anyway it doesn't seem to be cautious to that one point advantage he's apparently confident on his feet because he he let Powell up he has those counters.
He took the single leg and counted it here, trying to hoist Powell.
Powell is not quite as quick as Wagner and in a situation like this, but he's holding on in there real well.
There's no control and there's a stalemate.
It could also be this.
They expect to be a little fresh have a boys have done very well at the end of these matches.
Now, Wagner gets a set out and Powell comes in for a single leg.
Wagman counters beautifully.
He's been wrestling with Dan Gable.
You can see that comes up on top.
That's two to and Wagman leads 5 to 4 and has riding time.
That really is a good example of what it means to have Dan Gable in your wrestling in Powell turning it on and a he can get his arm through.
Wagman could have a little trouble because he's in between the legs there.
And if Wagman can't get out of bounds here, Powell could get some back points at 6 to 5 out of bounds.
We have a minute and 16 seconds left.
Actually, the score is tied.
It should be tied.
I don't know what with the score, 6 to 5.
There's riding time at best.
So in order to win, David Powell must turn any kind of escape or reversal by Wakeham and would win this.
So Powell has to ride him all the way out.
Wakeham Wagman Very unorthodox, doing all kinds of things, rolling over using the old elevator now wants to turn in Powell.
Powell decided he was in a bad situation and just turned out of that.
And it's a takedown for Wagner and rallied 7261 riding time, 40 seconds left, 30 seconds, 3026 seconds, and again, stalling by Wagner.
So unhappy people.
And I notice how those boos.
Come on.
This is partizan crowd, this match.
Earlier in the year, the man, the match previous to that win the point look, I was given 21 seconds.
If Powell could escape, it's a draw.
Wagner gets the arm, a leg up, 14 seconds and counting out 13, 11, ten.
Wagman wins this hallway.
Now to stalling and a point for an escape and oh, people are coming out of the stands now.
Somebody threw a that one flag.
In an unusual situation, Wagman has been disqualified.
Well, in a very unfortunate situation here at Iowa City.
It wasn't for what people was allowed onto the stalling.
He was not disqualified for stalling.
It would be he was disqualified for something that he did that he said, yes, it would have to be flagrant misconduct and.
That was hockey.
6.0.
And that's a six point.
That's right.
That's a six pointer.
Makes the score 17 on the mat.
Will have to be cleaned up here.
Keith Young called Wagman for stalling.
Again, the Iowa crowd is very unhappy about it, and so is Wagman.
Now we're going to have to set up here for 177 and try to put this behind us.
There's Chris Campbell, one of Iowa's outstanding wrestlers.
Please refrain from doing anything other than the wrestlers.
Here's a switch.
Here's a definitely a very switch.
Done.
Yes.
Danson's on the mat.
The whole team has put their man on the mat first.
Gadson was to face Campbell.
Campbell's on the mat now and the Iowa State's going with without them a youngster who has wrestled exactly one collegiate match stamp a small Iowa town and Leave Trace Center has won one match.
He wrestled against Mankato and won a PIN.
Chris Campbell finished second in the nation last year.
He is generally considered the outstanding 77 pounder.
And here come the Iowa people of Iowa State coach and the team physician.
And they want that mat cleared because there's ice all over it.
Staff being sent out here.
Now after the matters has been dried off against Chris Campbell.
And Chris Campbell is one outstanding wrestler.
I don't think he expected to see this boy against staff countered very well.
The score is 17 to 8, Campbell.
Again, staff that means that Willie Gadson will probably wrestle at £180 for Iowa State because he Santana is hurt will not Dave staff against will be Dave staff against Campbell they're going Edwards story about the snap he was in school for a year and never came out for wrestling and then finally someone asked him why he didn't come out and so he showed up as last year just to take down.
Campbell takes the leg down, turns it into a two pointer.
Doug, I've got to admit, I tried to recruit Dave Stamp to Drake University.
He wanted to go in veterinary medicine.
He's now changed his major.
He has little more time to give to wrestling.
And as I understand, that's one of the reasons he's now out for wrestling.
Why Steve and the crowd unhappy with what's happened in the last match.
Y'all saw sarcastically, Here's the high crotch move.
When we get to a single leg, Gadson picks it up, brings to the outside, brings hip pressure down on Dave Stamp, takes it in that tries to go right into the cradle.
That's where he was trying to bring pressure down that hit back to live action here at fine point athlete ad at the end the first 6 seconds of this second period as we see the coaches Harold Nichols on the left and Gary Colonel Meyer on the right.
We just missed Campbell's third point and escape.
He stood up and turned out immediately on the whistle and so on his feet.
It's three to nothing.
Campbell, 177 pounder on the right from one of the Hawkeyes, outstanding wrestlers looking for a national championship a week or so NCAA tournament in Arizona this year, Chris Campbell arrived Iowa, rather unusual way, dug it.
Dan Gable was out in New Jersey giving a banquet speech and the man food stamp, Mr. Move, Campbell countered.
And it's another two five.
But I think for Campbell, Chris didn't have a place to go to school.
And Dan said, I think we can find a place for you at Iowa.
And it was you bet he had a matter faith that Chris Campbell ended up at.
I want to he had just seen him do, I think, in a freestyle meet here at Iowa City, which he won Campbell riding leading 5 minutes to game stand.
His opponent from Iowa State of 17 to 8, Iowa won the first five matches.
He got a draw in the sixth disqualification in the last one at 167 minutes, requiring scale.
And if stamp's first point 5 to 1, if Iowa State lose this match by a normal decision, the score be 20 to nothing.
If Iowa State then could come back with pins at both 190 and heavyweight, they win.
Here's Campbell's quickness.
He does this.
I watched him wrestle last year against Lieberman from from Lehigh and he used he wins by a score of 6 to 3 mostly on countermoves his quickness is just simply outstanding Stant made a move on Campbell counter.
It's also apparent he has some strength.
Yeah those arms.
A lot of people came here tonight expecting to see Campbell against Gadson that Willie Gadson of Iowa State's going to go 180 replacing injured Frank Santana team score Iowa 17 I ask you eight we're in the £177 class.
One minute one We had a drop here last year, Doug When I think January 3rd, Iowa State was tied in the heavyweight match, 19 to 19 was the team score.
And that was the only blot on the whole Iowa record.
That's too quick.
Two by Campbell.
And now he's trying to drive for the Half Nelson.
He puts staff on his back.
And I would suggest that staff is in a considerable amount of trouble.
30 seconds left, 30 seconds stamp trying to fight his way out of it.
It's already a three point situation, but he has the reverse half in a real serious straight ahead for pound that shows it up.
There's a high crotch movement deep down in the air.
We're going to take the pin actually goes right into Half Nelson elevates inside the league brings snap shoulder.
The thing that Campbell does here is be patient Bolton was on his back.
He knows he only has about 30 seconds left, keeps the hips low, raises the head Start price to hook up with the legs to be able to give him some support for the fall.
Half Nelson and the £190 match.
It's Willie Johnson of Iowa State and Bud Powell of Iowa.
At the start of the third period, Johnson leads 2 to 1 on, an escape with both wrestlers being penalized a point for stalling.
But Palmer in the bottom, he trails 2 to 1 here.
His Iowa team, the Hawkeye team, leads 23 to 8.
Gadson goes down to the lay.
Jackson sweeps the other one out, comes back to the matter.
Bud Palmer.
We have Indiana and Bud Palmer from Indiana and really from New York.
Yes, Jackson's leading 2 to 1.
He's Red and Palmer through the first 50 seconds of this last period.
Out of bounds.
Used to be when you saw the Iowa State teams, Doug, you expected him to be from Cresco and Algona and Eagle Grove and all those schools.
And now we see them from Bay Shore, New York, and from all parts of the United States.
Wrestling has certainly improved coast to coast, and I think it's a tribute to directly to the outstanding high school coaches that we have.
The United States, Larry, turn it.
Turn before Campbell could go, before Gadson could go down in the leg.
And it's even up to two.
But Power is looking for him to drop down the leg.
And yes, that was the very move that Willie had used before to counter that Stanley Gadson did not pick up a minute advantage either.
He doesn't have any riding time for a point prospects yet.
A minute and 35 seconds left to 2 minutes at £190.
Iowa already salted away the meat and we have this one coming up.
And then what looks to be a really strong heavyweight match between Bob Fouts of Iowa State and Doug Burns, Goater of Iowa, a talented freshman.
Fouts is a very talented junior college wrestling, and they're both Iowa people.
Here is a £690 set running back out to the center again.
We're in the last minute of this match and again, a double stall called by Keith Yoder, a point for each for scoring a again, 3 to 3 after there's a one point awarded another one point award, the next time it would be two.
And he could disqualify five worth Coast.
I've never seen that occur.
That happens in a freestyle.
Yes, we'll certainly freestyle it.
Both boys have to be careful here that their aggressive one gets caught being passive.
It costs the match.
26 seconds left.
Keith got John watching very carefully.
What will take out of those men.
Go to the defense.
It's a two point call.
Yep.
12 seconds.
And here comes one.
He called them both.
He called both of them.
Two, two.
He could describe them in his last nine.
That's right.
Is 5 to 5 with 6 seconds left when they catch it and there is the end of it inactivity, Mark, that when I would say 5 to 5, largely on stall points, it's a draw.
Here's the battle against Gadson.
Here's Bud Palmer throwing the hands.
Gravity really tries to bring the arm in when you drop down the leg.
Bud says, I've been there before.
You're not to do that This time gets it out in this game standpoint.
Let's go here.
And now you're looking at the Iowa heavyweight, Doug Ben Stoner.
He's replacing John Bolles Gray, who was the third place finisher in last year's Nationals, but was injured earlier this year.
And Ben Scudder, who came to Iowa to play football but was an outstanding high school wrestler, has stepped in and become a really tough character, really fine wrestler.
Bob Fowlkes from Waterloo, Iowa, coached by Bob Siddons.
It was a very well known not only high school coach, but official experience.
This is one of the most he was a junior college national champion and he's a good rider and he'll catch a person he's a fine pinner.
He's an outstanding wrestler.
Ben Scudder got Ben scar time here.
Fouts wants to an examination apparently he's got hit in the nose.
Pause for a moment We move to further action in the second period with Doug Ben Scooter leading 1 to 0 on an escape.
And here is going to be a stall warning.
It's against both men.
This often happens, and I think it's going to be seen more and more against heavyweights who often don't like to go underneath the weight of the man opposite them for leg moves.
Or maybe they're sometimes not really built to go for leg moves and they're likely to get called for stalling when they're actually working very hard at each other on the upper body, perhaps trying to pull Ben Schroeder in now.
And they're out of bounds.
What he had was one arm, but they wanted to pull him in enough to kick kick it out from under.
It kicked the Lego bear hug, bear hug by Fouts.
If he can get Ben's motor down.
It was trouble.
But Ben's got to managed to shuck out from under it and just shrug out what you call a close call one to nothing.
And Fouts again wants time coming in to tell you got hit in the head somewhere and it was ranked number one in the country.
The ratings come out again next Tuesday.
We can guess who's going to be number one public address announcer here, exhorting the crowd a little bit.
You might mention, Doug, that for an injury time out, the Wrestler has 3 minutes.
If he is not ready to report back to wrestling in 3 minutes, the match is terminated and given to the other man.
Fouts is out.
It's 1 to 1.
Really.
It's it's more than that.
He he got out in 4 seconds.
He had a minute, four writing time.
So he does have a minute of writing time at this point so he could win by writing time.
I'll see if he can avoid stalling.
I can see Fouts talking to Ben Scotter and he's complaining to the official about something time Off runs three in Iowa State was revived in 1973.
This is the first time that the whole team has won.
The first time the whole team has won one, two, one as a score.
The public address official is just pointing out an interesting thing here, that this is the first time in this Iowa Iowa State series, which has been resumed now since 1972, that the home team has won the first time last year, Iowa State.
The closest it came was when Iowa tied Iowa State here in Iowa City.
One, two, one.
Fouts on the right against freshman Doug ben scotter fouts getting a little bit anxious here.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh oh.
Oh.
Oh.
Oh.
1.4 or 504 Ben Shorter.
And that's for unsportsmanlike.
You can see the bar in the background touch sportsmanlike behavior with 2 minutes of 6 seconds left is entirely possible that entirely possible that Ben's got.
Who can win by that score?
I haven't got the crowd stirred up.
We're less than 2 minutes left in this match.
And in the meet, Bob Foust lost his temper a little bit.
There, and it cost him a point.
I think what he's complaining about, Doug, is having his fingers held and feels like it.
His opponent is stalling 1.4 each, another double stall.
Unfortunately, so many of those wrestlers now makes it 3 to 2, 3 to 2 five to try to leg sweep there.
And I think some of the crowd in the crowd misinterpret that, interpret that as a kick that'll hasten.
Foust has done it before, so it's not unprecedented in his repertoire.
A minute three to hear the Rumble.
Now, as the Iowa crowd gets ready to enjoy this, Ben Scott against bouts of heavyweight and again, double stall.
Now the next one will be two.
It's 4 to 3 now.
Hey there.
One of them wants to give up that upper body moves and really try.
They think we have 36 seconds left in the environment.
Let's go to our leads, 4 to 330 seconds 30, the freshman against the experienced veteran and Ben Scott, who hasn't by a point although it's actually a that's actually that's right for the writing time it's actually four for the writing time clock shows 44 seconds for the Iowa man and a minute and 4 seconds for the Iowa State Moon So that would be a one point writing 11 seconds and Foust goes for the leg, but I don't know if he has time enough to take care of it.
4 seconds.
He has it behind 2 seconds.
He had it, but it was too late.
And so it's a draw.
It's a draw at one and heavyweight quick dog Ben starter and Bob Fouts, even up at the Iowa crowd, in effect, takes over the number one ranking again by defeating Iowa State 27 to 12.
And here's a man who's number one again, Gary Curdle Meyer, coach at Iowa.
I know it's nice to be number one, right?
Well, we certainly won't turn it down.
We'll Have to paper people put that connotation on it.
I think the big thing now is the tournaments are coming up and we're going to have to get our mind together and worry about that.
You assess this one tonight, Gary.
Well, I've said all along that I thought a team that gained momentum could probably break it open.
I don't think that's taking anything away from Iowa State.
We got the momentum going.
I think the same thing could happen to us.
You've got some kids in there.
They're evenly matched tonight.
It was our night.
I think you can take another night and you can give it to Iowa State.
I think, you know, that's very important and is close matches and the teams situation.
So to start it out right away with Maryland beating Jones, that's the first loss for him.
Did you expect that?
Well, we thought that Maryland very definitely stick in with Jones.
We thought 26 we could stick and win with an energy.
You see, this is the type of thing we need to get the ball rolling.
And I think it took a little wind out of Iowa state sales.
Those guys have been winning form and they were supposed to win.
So that's I think that was a break in the dike.
Mahlum and McDonough coming on and getting the job done.
Well, Gary, congratulations on a very big win.
I know that pleases you.
All of this national tournament is coming up and you're defending national champion and that's when the marbles are really up for grabs.
And again, congratulations tonight.
Lonnie Timmerman, thank you for being with us.
