Is made possible by friends of Iowa Public Television.
It's college wrestling tonight from the Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
Iowa Public Television Sports brings you the big intrastate showdown between the Iowa State cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
The two premier wrestling teams in the sport today who in the past 13 seasons have captured every NCAA team title.
Last season, the Cyclones snapped the Hawks nine year reign as national champions.
Today, they hope to break the Iowa 43 meet winning streak at Carver Hawkeye Arena, where the Hawkeyes have never lost a home duel.
Good evening, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown, and welcome to our second college wrestling meet of the season.
Next Tuesday at 930.
We'll have same night coverage of Iowa State and you and I from Cedar Falls.
And we'll have more weekend specials for you later on, too.
Also, we have our second run up of the seven basic skills of Wrestling with Chuck Patton.
And tonight, you'll learn another fundamental that'll help you understand the sport just a little bit better.
It's Iowa and Iowa State.
And here's Tim Johnson with me, former coach administrator and director of the 1984 Olympic Wrestling program.
Since we were here last, the shoes are on the other feet.
You bet.
It's been a long time since Iowa State was the defending national title.
And that's what it is tonight.
Yes, the Hawkeyes are not the national champions now, but the people around here really believe they're going to win today.
You see these little buttons that people are wearing that say take it back from state.
Well, they really want it back.
And there's a prevailing opinion that Iowa can do it, even though they're ranked lower than Iowa State right now.
Now, the Cyclones got back on number one by a big week of wrestling last week at the Virginia duals.
Iowa State upset previously number one ranked Arizona State and now they're number one again.
So why does Dan Gable feel so optimistic about this, this meet about winning it?
It's the new era and he thinks his wrestlers are right where they want to be right now.
He's hoping that they can go over the top with this meet.
It's good young wrestlers and also they are at home.
And home has been a real advantage to the top four teams in the nation over the past few years.
We talk about youth.
We mean real youth because there is a man on each side tonight who was in high school last year.
That doesn't often happen at this level.
Well, Bart Schell's big he was redshirted, are supposedly going to redshirt this year and he was too tough to keep out of the lineup.
Dan Gable said to himself, hey, our line ups better with him in.
He's tough.
Let's get him in there.
And he's in there tonight.
And Dan Night, another top recruit was in the lineup from the start.
Well, nobody was surprised when the four time state champion Dan Knight, broken in the lineup early.
He came in, but he's had a few lumps lately.
And it's kind of like welcome to the big time.
But we'll see that young men progress now every match.
You know how Iowa and Iowa State are all tough, ten matches.
But let's talk about a couple that maybe just have a little edge of glamor, you know, £126.
Well, Steve Knight, he loves to wrestle, but he couldn't find his niche at Iowa City and he had to transfer up to Iowa State.
And the reason he had to transfer is a young man named Brad Penrith begged Brad Penrith, a former NCAA champion.
He's had his personal problems lately, but Gable says they're licked and he's better than ever.
And at 177, two more Iowa high School products.
Well, Mike Barnhart, stay on.
And Royce Algiers rivalry goes back to high school.
They both like to talk, but this they have not met since entering college.
Ben Ansell, a former all-American redshirted last year, and he's looking to win the Nationals this year.
But he's got Royce Alger in front of him.
And Royce Alger has moved up from 167, again to make the team better, and he has no intentions of giving up his title.
Why not?
Sometimes this meet is decided by somebody you didn't expect.
What do you think?
Well, if you're asking me, where do I think that the difference could be in 150, 850, 858 could go a long way in deciding this meeting either way.
Either way, what happens if it comes down to heavyweight the way it does so many times?
Well, if it comes down to heavyweight, we know what happened last year.
Slinger won.
But any batting coach at Iowa State says he likes the way his heavyweights reacted this year and he wouldn't mind if anything, if it came down to Andy Cohen.
Well, we're going to find out in one minute.
Iowa State against Iowa from Carver Hawkeye Arena on Iowa Public Television.
We're back at the Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City for the big showdown between the Iowa State cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And there is the record that is on the line tonight.
43 in a row, the Hawks have never lost in Dan Gable's era at Carver Hawkeye Arena since this building has gone up on this stage.
It's kind of interesting, Doug, that the last duel meet that they lost at home was the last one in the old fieldhouse against Oklahoma State.
And here we go at £118.
You see the Knight Brothers for Iowa State in the first two eights against Martin and Penrith at 130 for Gibbons, an Apple two Iowa high school product at 142 Kedzie against Pearson Iowa State on the lap national champion Krieger against Carpenter for Iowa in the upper way it's Bill Pape against John Heffernan and what Kim says is a critical match at 167 it will probably be Jeff Kelley, although it could be Tom Frederick against Bart Charles big a freshman, a big match at 77 Ventures.
Dale and Alger Voelker defending national champion against Simpson at 190 and then the same heavyweight match as last year Pope against Sinclair Sinclair has wrestled Coke twice and he's beaten him twice.
So the Hawks should be or should be favored probably if it gets down to that last match.
There's Dan Gable kicking him.
Well, that's all you have to say.
That's Dan Gable.
I'm not saying anymore.
And he is feeling a lot better, a lot better about his team.
He has an idea now how he says, I know how good they can be.
I just have to convince them now.
Right?
He said that the team last week came around Jim Gibbons, too, by the way.
Tim, before we go on, he has been just remarkably successful since taking over the reins of the cycling program from Harold Nichols.
There are the captains out in the middle.
You see Krieger on the left from Iowa State.
Voelker On the other side there is Mark Schillinger with the man they call the fall guy, Roy Soldier.
And here we go.
Iowa is favored probably in these first two matches, but Iowa State wants to keep it close and maybe get an upset here.
118 Steve Martin, a fine sophomore from a great wrestling tradition, the Martin family at Virginia Beach, Virginia.
He's now ranked 11th in the country.
His opponent is Dan Knight, one of the two, I would say, most highly recruited wrestlers in Iowa, certainly if not in the entire United States last year.
And they're both out here tonight, you'll see Mark, Charles, big wrestle for Iowa have won 67.
Knight has had won.
Lots of freshmen have when they come out of high school.
A rough introduction.
The big time wrestler, he's now ten and ten and he has a little bit of a losing streak.
So Martin's going to try to take it to him here in Iowa in the black, of course, but dark and Iowa State in the red has Mark wants to get in a tie up.
He gets there collar lock, goes to the leg and comes back up again.
Nothing so far.
Three minute first period you go two minute, second period, two minute, third period, unless somebody gets pinned.
Sarah the referee is Phil Hennig of Marshalltown, Iowa.
He's wrestled lots of these big matches and he is his referee of these big matches and he is wearing a microphone so we can hear him talk.
Both of these wrestlers, Doug, like the control, the head they get have to get their own offense going because their weaknesses are when they stand around and get defensive.
So they both coaches feel they have great offenses, but they need to get going here.
Night has been blocking off pretty well, but I don't think he's laid on the offensive line with and Mark has started a couple and then decided not to there's a two on one tie up by night you see on Mark's right arm.
The setups are also important, especially when lot of the people who haven't wrestled before, they're both showing similar styles.
They're both showing that they want to do the same thing, though their night, they said, now right here is where he has to follow through.
He's been struggling on his finishes.
He needs to be able to finish fast with this.
This is night.
He doesn't have control yet.
He's trying to turn that into a takedown that goes to the type of leg it gets it.
Well, that's a surprising move there.
He made a nice shot.
Attack the leg and followed through and finished and.
Right.
They kept him up.
And then Knight's a very strong young man.
In fact, he's a good size for 118 pounder and he's sort of like a spy.
I think he's right here.
He drives a cross.
You notice he didn't try to lift.
He drove the man across his body.
That was a very good move by Dan Knight.
I do not think we have a minute.
20 left to go.
You've got 9 seconds remaining.
Time slot, right to do nothing.
Knight will stay down and ride, but come first.
Well, of course, Martin's known for his Grammy.
He didn't have to.
You know, he's out with nothing.
Well, Dan Knight has done something very important here.
He's established a leg attack, which you just didn't know whether Dan Knight was going to be able to show how Martin's in.
But, oh, a powerful wizard by Knight.
There was a strength again whispering out strong over Huckabee.
He stopped Martin's move to the one in favor of the man in red, Dan Knight, a freshman.
Oh, he got off his face and their face.
Beautiful.
Snap down by Mark.
Right.
Dan Knight reached out there.
Martin took advantage of the bad positions, snapping down and spun around.
For now, Martin rides and Knight trying to control the hands and come up.
Martin would like to tilt it right.
Does Jim Beam over?
He's going to try to get that shoulders turn toward the mat.
He's not really a pinner, Steve.
Not a Steve Martin isn't.
But he can score points from the top.
He leads here 3 to 2 now and Knight goes back to the bottom.
Now, freshman often have trouble on the bottom, but top man you're told that that knight is pretty good about getting out.
There's the roll but Mark is controlling very well so that high half half Nelson they're like the dark knight of that Well he's keeping knight and bad position is keep his hips down working on him hard just looking for something here or there.
Period's almost over control.
Well, for his bottom feeder, the three knights deferred down and Iowa chooses down.
So Martin figures he can come out and he'll be ahead 4 to 2 if he does the bottom set.
Top Man You're on the freshman knight.
Dan Knight, whose brother Steve will be wrestling at Brad Penrith next cap.
Keep Martin standing.
We turn him you hear the referee Bill Heffernan, saying you had the you have to return him.
So he let him go.
It's four to center.
Come on.
That right there in front of the crowd.
Here's Delon both Steve Martin stop and the whistle blows stopping the sophomore Virginia Beach wrestling Phil Herring wants to get control of the match right away.
You see Knight with a two on one that's very hard to make any shots when your arm is right.
He'd like to get right there.
He'd like to be able to control with the front headlock and do the same thing that was done to him.
Snap down, spin around.
Martin went to the other side with a try for a heel pick, and that gave it up.
And then the both taking turns controlling the head.
And there's more of a single nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing.
There's just got to be a lot of presence about Dan Knight right here.
He's got to know where he's at.
Think nothing, see what happens.
Listen to Phil Henning.
He'll tell you what's going on.
He's going to call a stalemate three, Danny boy, that was both.
Well, I don't know why Steve Martin ended up giving it up, but he's out now a takedown by Knight by Knight, Skate by Martin.
Makes it 5 to 4 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
Good scramble situation by both wrestlers right there.
Well, I'll tell you, I think this has been a tougher match than people expected here at 118.
And you know what's done it?
Dan Knight's like a heck.
Yeah.
He's been able to get to takedown, been able to lower that level and get it on the leg attack, which is kind of surprising.
5 to 4.
Martin Lee probably not the coach Gibbons and the coaching staff, they've done a real good job of coaching here.
Well told him that, hey, you're not going to be the wrestler you want to be into.
You can vary your attacks.
There is again, Knight has the two on one right tie up center but he's been able to drop off of that into the single leg.
That's exactly right.
But he wouldn't mind if he would be able to snap down.
So he's in a position he wants to be when he's on the two on one.
Steve Martin cannot let that happen.
Almost got in there again, Keep wrestling.
And when Martin reaches for that right side, then the Knight wizard's right and he's his strength gets him out of the situation.
So it's a good match here between Steve Martin, find himself a mark of the Hawkeyes and Ben Knight, a freshman for Iowa.
And it's five four in favor of Mark last period.
And let's see, he's hardy.
He decided to take up.
That's very surprised by that.
Well, if he'd like a point for escape, maybe.
But on the other hand, he didn't want to get written up and talk to Steve Martin, showed some real good writing there for a while and didn't want to get caught underneath.
And he felt feels good on his feet.
He's taken him down twice.
He was ready to choose down.
Coaches told him, Well, we like you on your feet.
So again, we're going to feel again right here is he's got to look to drive across like he did the first time to do that tonight, leading by one.
He has really established himself on the feet here.
He just reaches in and takes you.
That's not a real shot.
He just reaches down and gets it.
And then he's driving across.
He's not trying to lift immediately.
You're feet right off.
The shot is snatches.
That's a knee snatch right there.
Now, he keeps his hips in a good position, trips that back and covers himself and covers Steve Martin's hip.
All right.
Let's get back to action again here tonight.
Starting Martin has been able to get out very quickly and he did again.
So now we're on the feet.
Even though Steve Martin has established his offense right now, he's got to get back into this and go himself.
He be if he stays defensive, he's going to get beat.
And Steve Martin has one takedown for escape where he is.
Iowa expects to win these first two matches.
The crowd is tough.
And again, the fight for the single leg, that is a mismatch for tip Call.
It failed this time.
We have a minute, 15 to go in the first period of the last period of the first match still controls the arm.
User is having trouble shaking that tire and a beautiful that was a shock 104 shot by Martin and the escape is given tonight as a nice move by Martin on the takedown.
He did a nice job of getting what's right here, but he sucked in by and then he spun around and covered that shoulder.
Covered the shoulder with his own shoulder.
Dan Knight in a nice presence to catch that roll and get out is very close to two or four point move.
He Yeah.
And Mark puts it down.
That's right.
Like you said, Martin has an offense.
He just needed to get it going.
Looks like fatigue is beginning to be a factor here because Martin often likes to wear his man down.
Yes.
And Knight has run into a buzzsaw here in the last 30 seconds.
He's now trailing by three.
He has to get out.
He gets out, he ties it.
He has to get out before a minute.
A reminder, said Tyler.
That could happen.
Yeah, this is important.
What?
Knight's.
So he comes up to his feet, try to turn him.
He's really got to stand up.
He's got to be able to get an escape and get a takedown.
He's not going to be able to stay down on the Mac.
Martin's going to write it down, trying to keep Mark from putting the leg in.
Now Roll again by Knight.
Well, Dan's got the leg here.
He's going to have to catch him on his back.
Now Martin knows where he's at and tough position here.
With 10 seconds to go, Knight is unable to pull and Steve Martin is down with a 10 to 7 lead.
Has 9 seconds to go, Tom, And you're on.
Watch the clock.
And it is Martin's victory on a come from behind.
He did have riding time in the last couple of seconds there so it's Martin 11 and Knight three and the Hawkeyes lead three to nothing.
What turned out to be tougher?
I think that maybe the hundred seconds is a good match.
Good, real good match.
You got to give credit to both.
Knight came out good job as a freshman, but there's a young man that came from behind.
He's got to feel real good about the job he just did in the last period, and he turned his offense on.
And I'm sure Dan is going to say, Look at those films again, Steve.
Look what you can do when you turn the offense on.
Let's do it the whole match.
All right.
Now we go back to what I expect with a good match up in the Iowa wrestling Room at one time.
But it was one sided.
It was one sided enough that Penrith never relinquished a spot on the varsity.
And so Steve Knight had to transfer Steve Knight in the red on the right.
Brad Penrith was finished first in the Nationals.
Watson Second, no time goes right in on a single.
That's your specialty, that's Penrith especially.
This is going to be a stalemate.
Yeah, it's wonderful.
It's safe.
Look at those leg shots.
Put him at the top of the rankings on his way to here two years in a row.
We got one point.
This man illegal ten is one point Iowa illegal scissors around the head and arm one point Iowa legal scissors around the head on.
That's considered an illegal hold.
He had the legs tied around.
Petra's back.
That's illegal.
Probably saved him a point the way it was looking right there.
Yeah.
So it's Penrith one.
Here's the same situation as the last of Steve Knight's going to be in this match.
He's got to establish his leg attack.
He's got to establish his defense against Penrith leg attack, but he does have a weapon.
Darren is nice move on a single leg but Knight's out, goes in with a step in Nothing, nothing, nothing at risk counter.
These are two fine wrestlers.
Nothing.
Nothing.
Nice job on both parts.
Steve Knight showed he can just establish that low attack.
Penrith came out of it with a real nice counter You'd like to go in and that's the trip inside Trip.
And I was talking about Steve Knight's weapon.
Everybody knows it, but you sometimes just can't stop it.
That's his headlock.
It's tough.
And Penrith leads one to nothing with about a minute and 45 to go.
Now I'm sure that Steve Knight knows a lot of what's coming.
Like you said from the practice room last.
But you know, not a lot.
You know, you can know what's coming from bad Fred Penrith and it's not going to do you any good.
So a lot of pictures that picking it up.
It's Russell.
Another matter here is the Knight on the left against Penrith, the first match matchup he just joined up there is a shot, a double leg by Penrith for the trip.
Hit it hard.
He got in his leg and that makes up for the three to nothing.
Nice job keeping him out.
It's then was a double leg by Penrith and when he got the leg behind the trip it was over by an intercept right here.
He drives in, he comes up and he covers and you're on covers those hips and trips.
It takes the Steve Knight's support away by tripping his leg and restarts on top.
To me, he likes to put the legs in like that and really try to talk Leo Skate right?
He had to bail out.
He had the presence to know it was high and he says, Let me go back on my feet.
I establish myself, I'll get another takedown first.
It's 3 to 1 now in favor of the man on the ride, Penrith of Iowa, the Hawks won the first match 3 to 4 and have a free to nothing lead.
I believe Steve Knight's going to have to work in a little closer.
There's knights up behind a building in Penrith that no score.
Good quickness from Knight, but good reaction by Brad Pitt.
He picked the Knight's pocket on that one.
That night was Who is there first period?
I was destroyed.
So a lot of skill for the first he defers your choice but I would choose his down and Penrith says I'll go down start on the bottom bottom and a set top man you're on Steve Knight would like to establish himself here, keep him down on the mat, and for some points on, it's pretty good on the map.
He's just tough up here.
It's his reputation, embarrassing the role.
Well, yeah, there's let's all be serious type and there's you know Penrith Granby rivals are is even better than Steve Martin 4 to 1 in favor of Penrith of Iowa in the second period on that long single there again you see Penrith rolling with a man behind him.
Well yeah, they gave him two and one there and it didn't look any difference.
And then the last time I think it could be called either way, but I think it was called differently two times here.
So that makes it 5 to 3 in favor of Penrith.
And you heard Phil Henning's comment that he held him there and he felt that hey, he held him there for a second.
He had two points.
He had control of Penrith rolls as soon as he gets his back and he's been able to come out of that place, oh, less than a minute to go in the second period here.
It looks like Steve Knight's just waiting for Penrith to shoot and he's saying, Hey, the way I'm going to be right here in the state to take that.
There's a takedown, a state power ball down to four nine and a quick escape 6 to 5.
This is really a strategy on Steve Knight's part of the plan.
Well, he got Warren to, so he's not going to be able to lay back too much.
It's clear he's been counterpunching against Penrith.
I just don't think you can establish a match or establish yourself clearly on defensive measures and that's what Steve Knight's doing here right now.
He does have an offense, but it looks like he's kind of saying it's not going to work against Brad Penrith.
I've got to go counter and I don't think he can consistently win that way.
But Penrith has one penalty point.
The difference between them is that penalty.
There's Dan Gable.
Penrith has a take out of the first period three escapes in the second night, got to take down for that period and an escape in the third period.
So they're going to start on past.
It's going to start even.
But you've got to give credit to Steve Knight here for Russell on a smart match.
I mean, you know, he's he's saying this is the way I believe that I can beat back Brad Penrith.
It's a little bit of a race to see if if Penrith will make a shot, make a counter before referee Phil Hannan calls it football as well.
Yeah, but Steve Knight has not made a shot there as a single 1.00 stalling his call.
There it is.
Good injury time.
Iowa over here that makes it 7 to 5.
The penalty was called.
We have time out while Penrith stay right here again he sprawls right here that hip action to the hips in there now he's pushing out and right there he cut Brad Penrith in the eye on his defense there.
I don't know that there was anything intentional about it, but that was a correct call by Phil Henry.
Yeah, 7 to 5 star to penalty points are the difference.
That is interesting.
And maybe now you can always change tactics here.
Okay.
With a minute and 27 seconds to go, he's in a position where he can't do just everything he wants to do at Penrith.
He's tough in the third period and is trying to snap.
Well, now Knight's got to get back in on the leg attack.
Penrith has made all the shots in the last two and a half minutes.
There's a single leg by Penrith, that's where he wants to be and he gets the takedown 9 to 5 for two point takedown and he wants to ride for a while.
He wants to do some damage here.
He's looking for his mark.
Nelson's trying to turn him for some points with a half a minute left.
And what Steve Knight does not want to do is get turn four points and give Iowa an extra point for the team.
Stalemate.
Stalemate.
Walk away.
Knight is quite strong, physically strong.
He got one and he's not easy to turn.
But he Penrith does have a four point lead here with all 5 to 3.
So they gave another 10 to 5.
That's right.
Top man, you're on the next one's two points, 10 to 5.
Andrew Blankenship is flat on the top of that Cross-Body ride tough on the legs.
They'll meet again.
The old days.
Somebody has to get a cross-body ride in the single leg of the legs and just stay there next time.
Forever.
Forever.
If you can't improve from an on caution, this man falls.
Start his feet or on either side of caution.
I got to go inside both feet on one side of the other.
Then the favor of Penrith, who's going to win because there is no time left.
Does he have riding five?
He go 11 to 5 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
And so it's two in a row at the beginning for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Mark one against tonight, 11 to 7.
At 118, Penrith has defeated Steve Knight, 11 to 5 at 126.
Now we're coming into part of the Iowa State strengths with Jeff Gibbons at 3434.
But what about Joe?
Guess he's been out for a while at 42, you expect him to be strong.
And then national champion Tim Kreager at 150.
And this is going to be fun to watch because you're going to see three new faces in the Iowa lineup.
Dean Happel first here at 134 against Gibbons, Happel is a transfer from Edinburgh State, but he wrestles with the voice.
I'll just see him up at that.
Lisbon Right.
I saw Dean a lot when I was at Mount Vernon, and Dean's a good wrestler.
He's got good basic skills.
He was coached well by Brad Smith up there, and he's just he's steady all the way through on his feet, top and bottom.
But, you know, I like Jeff Gibbons.
I think he's coming on.
I think he continues to improve and I think he has a much as much of variety of attack as anyone right now.
Let's go back here.
We go back to the center where the first period, which is 3 minutes long, always when Iowa State wrestles Iowa.
Dan Gable has always been a fine coach for teaching his young how to wrestle against an individual, in particular individual.
So you can bet that Dean Happel has looked at a lot of film on tape.
You know, that's that's where I think that, you know, I think Iowa State really come on to the last few years because I think Jim Gibbons and his staff does a good job of just what you were talking about.
Also, you can tell in the first two matches that they both had coached well against each other individually.
No score here after the first minute, Iowa against Iowa State at Carver Hawkeye Arena, the Gibbons controlling at the top at the tackle, just keeping the arm under there as long as he is in that position.
Still eight right back in the middle.
And I think that Jeff Gibbons needs to shoot from out.
Dean is going to tie him up close and Gibbons needs to a tech to his attack from outside a single double situation, high crotch shot by Gibbons.
He's got a penalty and he does have to run a little bit.
Right.
Campbell did a nice job of countering out, getting his hip pressures, staying in good position, and Gibbons was able to block that single leg attack with the Underhook.
And now we're back to the center again with a minute and 10 seconds to go at 134, kick it out.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson at Iowa Public Television at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
The 43 match undefeated string at Carver is on the line here.
There is Gibbons takedown taking advantage of the low stakes, you know, and that's exactly what he did.
He took advantage of getting Dean Chappell out of position and he got his two points and almost caught him on his back.
So it is two nothing now in favor of Gibbons.
He's at two on one of Iowa State, very close to the edge, as you can see.
And like a man in the desert also near but yet the far white flag at center is go back to the center, you know, right here.
That's where Dean Hepple got in bad position.
He got his set.
His hips failed to stay underneath him.
Jeff Gibbons drove across him for two points at the whistle.
Gibbons maintains control the tight waist crutch, the near arm improved improve.
Appel wrestled before he came back to Iowa for Mike Diatta at that final state, Pennsylvania.
I was choice top bottom feeder the first.
That's the end of the period.
First choice top line respectful defers Iowa State uses down Gibbons takes down a reminder that it's intermission tonight after the £150 match we'll bring you Chuck patents new sports feature entitled The seven Basic Skills of Wrestling.
You'll analyze fundamentals developed by USA Wrestling.
That'll be after £150 Happel is on top to start the second period, trailing to nothing.
So give him some to his feet.
He's got.
Apple was going to stay with him as long as they were on the mat, but then he gave it up when Gibbons came to his feet.
So it's an escape making it three nothing goes in favor of the man in red.
Jeff Gibbons.
Jeff Gibbons keeps such good position, gives himself the opportunity, like I said, to take advantage when he gets his opponent out, leaving the line maker out of bounds.
Keep your back off the edge.
You get one for stalling.
That was spoken to Jeff Gibbons.
Oh yeah.
Oh, great.
I think Gibbons this period is 2 minutes long, Apple bending.
Well, trying to throw a headlock and missed it and two mistakes that crossed it to take that right And it's you know, it's not freestyle.
You don't get rewarded for what you try.
You better be sure of what you have in collegiate style wrestling before you throw something because they don't award you back to your feet on a slip.
Throw it five to nothing.
Now in favor of Gibbons riding with the near arm now gets the leg in, but happens Good position here.
He's trying to use a Granby pick up from behind and Gibbons was just able to hold that position.
It's still not resolved.
Right.
Jeff has a hold of the wrist there, so he's got pretty good position, a lot better than he might have come out with there.
It looks like it's going to be close to either going out of bounds and pulp for a stalemate.
And that's a good position right there to get a knee hurt.
Also.
And that's what he call that's what Phil Henning called.
He called it potentially dangerous because Jeff Gibbons knee was in a situation there that it could have been bad.
So Dan Gable shaking his head, He probably doesn't agree with me.
I'm sure he does in a mere beating.
It almost almost came out there.
But this period is almost over.
Second period, Gibbons leads five.
Nothing I was choice 30 time it will be apples choice down I would choice because I wasn't able to get out well if I'm going to take down well he's still shown except for a couple of mistakes he's shown good basic awareness of what to do in every position.
He's a fighter, he's tough, he's a competitor.
He says, I got to get out to win this game.
Both Gibbons just let it go.
So there's 5 to 1 now in favor of Gibbons, the brother of the coach at Iowa State Fair Game, Phil Henning starts in the again.
Gibbons has been able to reach on his own move.
He has scored two takedowns as counters circle when he's gotten out of positions.
Circle, circle.
That's the one that Gibbons has tried twice, three times.
Oh, that was close.
As far as whether Dean have let his knees in and had control.
That was a close one.
Was that no cigar?
So Harpo has a minute and 15 to get something started.
I've come from four points down.
It's going to matter.
Let's go out there to trigger.
He'll be up at £150.
He's the first.
Yeah, the Iowa State national champion lineup.
You saw Brad Kendrick walk away with an NCAA crown two years ago for Iowa and 126.
Nobody has been warned with a no penalty.
There's a single lake by happel.
Well, that's what he has to do, is just he has to establish his offense and and he's covering this up.
Well, He has good opportunity here for two points.
If he can stay with this ankle injury now, he's got to slip out his shoulder.
No, he's got to pull up on that leg and split the shoulder thing.
This is nothing very much like the way they were a few minutes ago to me.
All right.
Well, yeah, I'll tell you what happened.
Almost stalemate.
You guys came through on that.
That was a nice shot.
He just needs to finish it faster.
So it's not 5 to 1 with 20 seconds to go.
There was an offensive move by Gibbons and they shot a high cross, but half of them tying the head up.
Well, it hasn't allowed him to score yet, but he's kept Gibbons at bay.
Well, that's exactly right.
And the coaches are really unhappy with that.
So it's probably except for the fact they would like to see more offense from Hepple, but they aren't too upset because he didn't let Gibbons run away with the bench.
It is 6 to 1 because there was riding time and the cyclone got there win 6 to 1 by Jeff Gibbons.
He's a steady wrestler.
Jeff Gibbons he's coming on now.
We're going to 142.
And this is one of the ways where people really don't know what to expect on the basis of experience and record.
You'd expect Joe Garcia to be the favorite.
He's the Iowa State man returning to the lineup.
But because he has been out and is something of an unknown quantity just lately, because of that, he had a bad shoulder.
Well, and Eric Pearson, who's in there as a freshman from Oak Grove, Missouri for Iowa, hopes that he can pull an upset here.
Well, guess he's a real comeback story.
He had a total restructuring of his knee last year, and he's really mentally, emotionally, physically.
It's been a tough comeback.
Want to come back when you have that bad an injury?
Eric Pearson Gable says he's just a good old boy from Missouri is tough.
He hustles.
They expect big things from him in the future.
He's a redshirt freshman once he's gone.
Last year, he went to state championships in Missouri.
Pearson broke up at a trailer on the edge of the mat, Burton scrapping for a position up at the top.
They are very important in the sport of wrestling, legitimate.
Get the setup that you want.
Pearson decided not to go under that time, but Jesse wouldn't mind getting into a scramble.
He's shown in years past that he likes to scramble and he's good at that.
He has over the years, but better on the map and on his feet.
He's dangerous down, dangerous coming from under and a tough rider.
This time he's able to get his head out of Pearson had the control of the head 6 to 3 Iowa after three matches.
Kramer against Mike Carpenter, big center guys.
There's a whole lot of pushing and shoving.
Why not allow the taxes go open up?
You're right.
Fill Here's here's Pearson trying to get me in there with that body lock.
But Jesse is strong.
Pearson did very well to come out of there.
Well, I'll tell you what.
Jerry Pearson just showed his coaches something here.
Thousands and thousands of hockey fans.
This the first time that he's been in front of a varsity match in front of this kind of crowd.
And they said, hey, he's getting in there and going.
And that's what we want.
Everything else will come.
But some of the sometimes the hardest thing to get over, Doug, is that mentor.
Yeah.
Oh, the fear that maybe shouldn't throw it.
It's just a fear of wrestling for the Iowa Hawkeyes in front of their fans and saying, Well, will I do it?
Can I do it?
And he's saying, Hey, I know I can do it.
I got to just get out there and go motor stalling.
Both are the attendance, by the way, today.
We'll have in just a few minutes to tell you about it.
Good crowd, Great crowd today.
30 seconds to go in comes Pierce it on the leg.
There's Pierce.
Now he's got to cover and drive across.
Guys.
He wants to scramble with the Pierce.
He's got to stay with good position.
And he was fortunate that time.
Tough move and he got out of it.
Pearson had the start.
Well, I'll tell you, you get the finish.
A veteran is gassy but he's he's given Pearson maybe too many chances here.
We're almost through the first period with no score.
So the attendance is over 13,575.
A hundred.
And that's a fine off turnout here.
Almost full house, but not quite like after what, Saturday afternoon Iowa chooses neutral.
Right.
So this time Jesse deferred and Pearson decides to stay on the feet.
Why not?
But Pearson hustles and his coach, Coach Gable, says he is a hustler.
The only thing he's worried about.
Can he hustle all the way through the entire match this time?
A high crotch move by Jesse.
Nothing.
But guess he isn't able to cut across.
That's what he needed to do.
Now, Pearson likes where he's nothing.
He travels very well.
He's a fine scrambler.
And he came out with the takedow and reversal.
He's one of these people who seems to roll around on the mat.
And no, you know, he has this build in downfall mechanism that tells him where he is right here.
I think you're going to see him float around and just look for what's going to come up.
He likes to float, likes to scramble.
Pearson needs to come up and come out.
Come in.
You got to get out the side.
Now.
You got him broken down.
You got to get off the side because he's not supposed to keep himself parallel from the other man's body.
Now he's at the side.
And also Pearson is up in his base now for a change.
Yes, he's putting a lot of drive against the shoulder in the the back comes in with the leg.
Now here comes the price.
Here is a possible.
But he's too high.
Guess he was too high and he was lucky to stay in control.
Was able to come back into control.
We want the ankle We have 28 seconds to go.
Second period.
Yes.
He now has better than a minute of right in time.
Center.
We have 20 seconds to go.
In the second period, Iowa State and Iowa Carver Hawkeyes here, by the way, set top man.
You're on right here, guys.
He did not was not able to cut across from the initial move, but he was able to scramble on a roll and come through for the to took it in the next revolution hands there didn't get it on the first one state with 10 seconds to go gassy putting pressure on on top man you're stalling but that's a penalty against him here.
Just one point.
So guess he gets a little extra.
HARRIS This choice got a lot of her feet.
Iowa State was down, as he says, down.
And, you know, it's not just to come out for one.
Joe Desi, He likes to be down.
He's dangerous.
He can pin a man when he's in the down position.
If he grabs your head, look out.
I have no doubt that Pearson knows all about it.
There's the head goes for the head.
Oh, Pearson Ball scramble here.
Where is it going to come out?
Whoa, whoa.
And is that an understatement?
When we talked about scrambling, still left?
Yes.
He looks like he's just about to get the reversal here.
They got to reversal five.
Nothing.
I'll tell you.
You know, it's like he says, I know where I am all the time.
But I was impressed with Eric Pearson's press pass.
Tressel throughout that he was able to avoid the the head throw.
He knew, just like you said.
I think he knew what was coming.
But yes, he just keeps coming off.
He rarely gets ready.
55 seconds to go here in this match.
If he were to win with what he has now, he would tie the match by, I think, guessing with, writing time.
If he somehow were to get a near-fall, that would make it a major decision.
So it's important for Jesse to keep the pressure off.
Let's go top to stall.
Right Right there.
Use it.
Oh, Jesse.
Riding with a tight waist that high half by Mr. Pearson was born again.
Is the pedal at the Iowa State.
Phil had him feeling that when the top man gets a chance to position the right move, Pearson just hasn't been able to get back pressure into him.
And there it is.
That's the end of writing time.
It's seventh and I think it'll come with experience for Eric Pearson.
He's a tough kid.
Joe Gibbs He did a nice job of coming back into the lineup, scrambling his way to a victory and he was very tough on top.
He rode well the whole last period and part of the second.
So it's even here now.
After four matches, we told you that 34, 40 to 50 are tough Iowa state weights.
Maybe here is the toughest one of all.
But you're looking right now at a young man that Sam Gable thinks has a wonderful future.
Here's Mike Carpenter from Middleburg, Ohio.
He went to Saint Edwards School, where the happiness came from.
And although he's only a freshman, he's 12 and two.
Oh, yeah, redshirt freshman.
Yeah, he's a game wrestler.
He's not going to be scared of Tim Krieger.
He'll come after him.
I don't know how much good it will do, but we'll find out.
Krieger is undefeated.
He was the national champion last year.
And he is.
We said at Lehigh we saw him earlier this year.
He sometimes was a little scary.
Not that scary.
And that means that he's that good.
Yeah, he's very strong.
Carpenter for I'll work in the middle of working the setup, trying to steal each other out like keeping him away and taking long shots.
But fingers never last.
Toes seen in this kid.
Is that right?
Well, that's right.
Definite.
Yeah, I have.
Last year was the Buckeye 150 fingers but it's a couple matches this year he won only by one point against, for instance, Junior Taylor of Oklahoma State.
Oklahoma of Oklahoma has a lot of pushing and shoving.
He's going to have shot once two on one tie by a cratered off.
Well, Mike Carpenter was a very pleasant surprise for his coaches year good able to step his way.
You're going to like the single leg reach and now he puts the leg in.
He'd like to take some of the starch out of his freshman, which is really tough on top.
Boy, I tell you, he's tough.
And there are near-fall points being counted now.
He just cranked on that.
He had control of the legs in the back, really put his hips into it.
And even we even heard a little grunt there.
He's got it was a three point NEAR-FALL That's one of the problems for the wrestling critter.
You get behind so fast.
Yep.
Yeah.
Love out.
He brought it to Joe Turk in there again.
Boy, that's a choke.
So he has the arm across the chin.
That's what he just can't break.
There he goes.
He just broke the play.
Three, four, five.
And that makes it a tough near-fall.
But the think and prove it's something, isn't it?
You know, young Mr. Carpenter's wrestling a good match and all of a sudden he's behind by eight points.
Joe heading off, taking that one away from it.
Well, Phil Henning's been consistent here.
He is watching out for the safety of the wrestlers and give him credit there.
And, you know, the coaches and the wrestlers that are on top of the time don't like to see it.
That calls are known as illegal.
And it's one point.
All right.
Work hard to take the one we seconds to go in the first period and trigger roll.
And the position right here appear at eight to watch.
Whereas I mean, it's 27 seconds.
So riding time Carpenter gets his Iowa chooses charge roll and he says, I'll stay up.
He just says, I don't want to get on the mat here.
There's Chuck Pack will have his basic skills of wrestling part two coming up right after this match with our all American presenters, Ricky Stuart and Lee Kemp.
Well, Mike Carpenter, just like I was talking before about some of the other wrestlers, has to establish his own weight.
They're just not going to take the lad across.
He's got to say, I want this.
I'm going to get it.
And it's a takedown.
So nicely done.
So many times we wait too late.
If you cannot win consistently without establishing your offense.
And Carpenter gave Kim Krieger a little something to think about.
9 to 3.
Oh, he's a good, solid wrestler.
Keeps good position as you can see too.
But this time skill Krieger comes around behind nice leverage on late night there.
He's able to leverage itself around 11 to 3.
And this is not on the feet again.
Apparently, Carpenter is pretty tough to load up with that tilt.
I think he's just playing pretty tough.
So Krieger now goes back to the move that he scored with the last time, and it takes a lot of attention on there on the bottom.
Krieger again puts the way against him in on the way.
The reason they call it a stalemate.
Also, Krieger wasn't getting a spin move.
He wasn't getting the back to the mat.
Let's go.
Carpenter was unable to come up because he had one of his total braces.
One of his legs were off the mat, so he had no opportunity to come up.
So Krieger either is turning or they had to come out the other side.
I'm out for a shuteye here by carpenter.
I thought he was up a one year high school champion.
Bottom man set at the same you're.
And he was runner up in the U.S. as last summer.
No, not yet.
Nothing yet.
Nothing yet.
Nothing here.
Nothing.
And scramble by Knight Carpenter.
I got an escape very quickly.
It's 11 to 4 now in favor of Krieger Krieger, I think.
What's it for?
Personally, I think Carpenter's establishing himself as somebody tough.
You know, he's not going to go in and lay down Krieger.
He's he's a he's a tough individual, and he'll come after you and Carpenter saying, Watch out.
Yeah, he can throw the double leg.
That time at Krieger had to work everything, you know, to keep from getting this choice.
Top of the field end of the period.
How do you think Carpenter's firing up this whole crowd with a shot at Krieger?
Yeah.
He's not scared to look and look him in the eyes.
He does have make it that Krieger is going to start in the bottom.
His choice here.
Want to see if he can get out.
Mike Carpenter sets up a skate there.
Okay.
It's a four point team win here as it is, right?
Right, right.
12 to 4.
And actually, he has riding time, too.
So it's important for Carpenter to get the takedowns, to get back in this match, get it back down to two less.
The major decision is a double leg.
He's been able to hit three tires.
He clears it.
Well, now he's covering it well, nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing through.
And it is a takedown.
He's been able to reach Krieger with a double leg beautifully.
I think there's got to come right up.
And he says he's going to let him up because he knows he can.
Well, it's the only way he can.
He's on his feet.
But the next takedown is going to decide whether this is a major decision or not.
And Carpenter has looked very good on his feet against this national champion from Iowa State.
There's a heel pick, a beautiful move by Krieger.
That's one of his specialties that he had not shown so far, just endurance.
He had all these different moves in his head.
He set himself up.
He said, there's the angle I'm going to pick.
Rush, You the chair, He's all right.
Drive it with a nine point lead.
You know, I think the defender still down.
Doug, on experience.
Some time is enough.
Right here is the Reebok.
He just looked for that ankle.
He picked it.
He has so many things going in his mind.
He can he can keep him up there.
And it's a repertoire of moves.
And when you're young and you don't seem to have that many things going on at the same time, it'll come through.
Mike Carpenter Oh, he's only a freshman.
Krieger has another year after this.
And I suppose somewhere along the line they're going to think, Boy, oh boy, I've got to wrestle this guy again the next seven.
It's important now for Carpenter to get a takedown, to break up the major decision that Krieger now has.
He leads by eight.
We have only 18 seconds to go.
Single leg.
Couldn't finish it.
Krieger could not get it this time.
He picks the way he's very strong with those arms.
And now he does have the major decision.
17 to 7.
He wasn't able to turn.
That's it, guys.
Riding time makes it 18 to 7.
It's a major decision for Krieger suggests.
You know, it's a good match for both wrestlers.
This is good experience for both wrestlers.
Carpenter knows he can go.
Krieger knows, Hey, there's never a time you can't prove he knows it.
He's that kind of wrestler.
He'll be back in the room just working that much harder.
The Cyclones now take a lead.
10 to 6 here.
As we come up to intermission.
They won the three matches.
They figured to win Iowa.
One, two of that they figured to win.
And we haven't really had any upsets so far.
And we're only halfway done.
It's Iowa against Iowa State.
That's Palmer Arena.
That is the end of the £150 pack right now.
Iowa Public Television would like to present a new feature entitled The Seven Basic Skills of Wrestling with Chuck Bass and I. Chuck will analyze the second and a series of wrestling fundamentals.
It's wrestling time again.
Here we are back again at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
The Iowa State Cyclones lead the Iowa Hawkeyes after £150, 10 to 6 in the national rankings see Iowa State up on top as a result of that big win in the Virginia duals, Iowa's ranked fourth, but here at Iowa, it's at home.
And these top five or six teams usually win at home, don't they?
You bet.
And it's been that way for the last couple of years.
Well, it's been a terrific meet.
We were just talking about this such terrific talent out there that's going to be back another two or three years really gives the fans something to really look forward to.
I'm excited just looking at it and looking what's coming.
It's a lot of sophomores.
Freshman is great and we're going to see some more coming up here too.
And also £158 is going to start it off.
And we said that £158 is liable to decide this meet.
It could very well I haven't seen anything to change my mind.
Well, I believe it will be.
It's going to go a long way, decide it.
So we're just about ready to go again with our second of the college wrestling meet.
Reminder again that on Tuesday night at 930, we'll have Iowa State at you and I.
Now, you and I is one of the top teams and they're at home.
They have a real chance this year to do real well.
So that one is same night coverage.
We hope that you'll join us then on Tuesday night at 930, Wisconsin and Iowa, Oklahoma and Iowa, Penn State and Iowa State, then the all star meet where we'll see generally the number one and two ranked wrestlers against each other.
That will come from Cedar Falls, Oklahoma State and Iowa.
And then this rematch again over in the other guys place.
I'm almost speechless because of the schedule.
If you're like a college wrestling poster, which will also give the season schedule, there's what to do to get it box 6458, Box 6450.
Johnston, Iowa.
The zip is 50131.
There's the herky finger at Iowa.
And here is a look at the crowd.
Close to 14,000, the crowd Saturday afternoon here.
Where is this fantastic?
I know.
And they'll fill it up again for basketball later today.
And I wonder how many people are going to be different.
I don't want to meet you, but when you go back to back, you hopefully they don't have a traffic jam in between.
Well, let's talk a little bit about what we might expect.
Let me give you a look back here.
First of all, at the first half, Iowa won the first two matches.
Martin beat them.
They had 11 to 7.
Penn Repeat night, Steve 911 to 5.
And Iowa State won the next three, giving 6 to 1 over two and a half old joke as a seven nothing over Eric Pearson and Tim Krieger, 18 to 7 and he needed all his skills to take a really ferocious freshman by the name of Mike Carpenter, Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
As we go back.
158 it's John Heffernan on the ride of Iowa, who finished sixth the Nationals last year against Bill Tate, a senior from Waterloo who was the big eight champion two years ago and redshirted last year.
Well, they both have different styles, but there's been a lot of like this year in the way their seasons have gone up and down.
The coaches just don't really know what to expect, but they hope for the best because when they're wrestling their best, they're both, oh, they're very, very good wrestlers.
And Tate has in the past wrestled very well against Iowa.
Well, he doesn't lack any talent, I'll tell you.
He's got an athletic body, is an athlete.
He is a football player.
He's all state.
The state halfback.
He's really got a body for the sport, but he's really got to get his head together here because he's had a rough year this year and he's got a lot of talent to put out on the mat and coaches want to see him come together tonight.
John Heffernan He started strong this year, Doug, but last year guys are just pushing his shoulder.
He finished sixth, had a good NCAA tournament, but you know, at one time he had lost nine in a row last year.
Well, this year he's lost two or three in a row at one time.
And hopefully coaches are hoping that he'll come out of it again this year.
Heffernan made the shot, couldn't make it, couldn't complete it.
He's just coming off.
John Heffernan is just coming off two back to back real good matches.
They'd like to make it three in a row.
He had a terrific tournament last year at the NCAA because I've seen it wrestler in wrestling Robert Cole and it's double warning for Stallings so that makes it the threat of a anytime somebody does it again there's a shot by Heffernan and he got off his base tape had to sprawl to get away and so he was unable to counter £158.
Iowa and Iowa State cyclones lead Tampa six.
They won the last three matches at Carver Hawkeye Arena between these two National Power Wrestling teams and their first match of the year, they'll get together again over here and here's a figure left by Heffernan.
But pay truck kicks his leg off.
Well, it's going to have to pay him back now with a shot in here or he's going to get called where?
Iowa Public Television.
Doug Brown with Tim Johnson with the play by play or the Grunt by Graham.
As we've often said, if he just made a shot to the left headlock, he tried to shuck, fade away and couldn't do it.
Heffernan was able to stop that shot and get into that front headlock, but Tate hasn't made any offensive moves yet.
Well, he that was his first even glimpse of one where he was, but he was stopped ad when things were going well for him.
He has a good low level attack guys.
Your boss going still to teach and still even and it's 1111, two, four.
Iowa State chooses down in the second period pick goes down Tommy John and Peters is out to the one All right injury time injury time injury time He joke okay now we're going back to the center again Phil Hennigan pulled up both up great the tape you saw an attempt to go to the left side seems to only be able to go to the left side.
I'm sure John Heffernan knows that when you when you're limited to one side, you really limit your offense.
There he goes, shot to the left.
Heffernan knows it's coming.
It's really shutting it down right now because an eyebrow comes up.
HEFFERNAN But Tate is quick enough to turn on him and say at the point it's 2 to 1, take Saturday.
Well, that's what he wanted to do.
Yeah, and actually to explain myself better, Pete likes to go to the left side and this right leg, leg is really slow and slowing down right there.
When Heffernan leads with the right leg, that's really slows Pete's offense eight against Heffernan in the second period, 2 to 1 take.
He goes up and gets one four.
There he was on to that man's left side.
He shot it.
Pat's right, a double leg, and it's now 4 to 1 in favor of tape.
Drew a little duck action on that.
Two with a little high crotch.
He he really threw a move at him.
Now Heffernan wants to get out here quickly and turn him turn into something because he doesn't want to let it take it.
His confidence up.
He was almost out.
The tape was able to control the ankle.
He has to hold it for a while to get maybe some riding time.
So Pace is driving at him during the second period, pacing parallel.
He's probably going to have to come around to the side or I and he's got to get him out of there.
Well, he's got to come out to the side.
Heffernan's got to throw some back pressure and come straight up and it's more one day end of the period.
I was Troy's top vinyl tape back in the lineup at £158 for Iowa State.
Yeah, he can't win the 5 minutes.
He could take it down now.
And I think tamping down, you got to go like you got to bring your hips up.
Now, when you need to get out to make it four two.
And that's going to take time to get back in the match again.
But there are only 3 seconds that need it for take to get a riding time going escape.
He didn't get it done, but the clock only shows 59 seconds and Jim Gibbons is really upset about that.
He thought he should have there should be riding time.
Here is Jim Gibbons going to the official place any time up there, Bill?
He missed the right time.
He held them down longer than that for 59 seconds.
Yeah, he missed holiday know this counts this counts of his injury time so start as you try to figure this out.
When did the takedown occur?
When did the takedown occur?
In the second period.
Yeah.
Do you have it time?
When did that takedown occur?
One on one.
Yeah.
We had we had 58 seconds up there and they had 5757.
We held them longer and 3 seconds.
Still these guys, well no, he said 5058, 2:00 there's 58.
They said 57 seconds.
He was out within 2 seconds.
So That's right.
That's pretty close right there.
Now, it could be there could be another eight, 9/10 of a second in or to cut the injury time off for change.
How much injury time is he used?
Well, I think the point 35 as far as it started, 57.
And after he got out, that's 59.
So right that 43 to go here take lead 4 to 2 and Heffernan has to prove himself on his feet here.
They've each been warned so penalties are going to make a difference.
It is both of them have to turn on their offense because the other one should get called if they don't.
It the started that way in the first period.
It shouldn't be any different.
In the third period they made a shot.
Couldn't get it.
Heffernan reaches a lot of shoving, a lot of fighting for position to win.
We always call and call here.
Pretty soon Phil's established himself.
Phil He did in the first period.
Like I said, they're not doing anything different here.
So somebody is going to get a call or two to take.
With only a minute left.
This is very important, this match, because it's one of the few toss ups we have here that everybody sees at the Portland Pepper.
You know, they want John Heffernan to get after him and get going because the points there for him, if he wants it, a shot by Heffernan take sprawls out, holds the position, but he'll have to make a shot to get called and he did.
He got call one point.
It's now 3 to 4 4 to 3 over Heffernan and Heffernan can win with a takedown because there is no riding time after he has a and he can win.
If if Pete gets called again, it could be two points.
There's a shot by take.
He has the arm across the back.
We have 8 seconds to go now.
Heffernan wants to throw it away and there it is.
And it is Kate's win by 143 Chikadze 4 to 3.
Iowa State wins it £158.
Tate over Heffernan and it's 13 to 6 in favor of the cyclo and very unhappy people are letting themselves be heard in Carlsbad.
This one ought to be fun here.
This next £167 between two youngsters, Bart Charles, who was in high school last year and may have been the best high school wrestler in America, and it won 67th Iowa State, a sophomore from Scripps, up for the same part of the state.
Jeff Kelly, important match for Iowa right here.
They really feel that they're going to have to win this match.
And I think that the way shows this shells Dick's been looking this good opportunity this Kelly is tough Charles Vic made up and a shot couldn't get it last year Charles Big was undefeated on the fact he had lost a high school match up thinking about three years, national junior champion got a lot of good technique and everybody wanted it, you know, like Gable got it and everybody wanted him because of his weight.
Doug at 167 is not that many opportunities to have someone that's able to come in and step in like Charles Big has been able to do for Iowa.
And that's a real that's a that's what you really call a blue chip athlete.
As you said, Everybody, I think, really expected Charles makes the redshirt this year, but he has shown himself to be good enough to help the team this year.
So Royce Houser's got up to 177 center.
Yellow has hit well in the Jeff Kelley from red heart of a wrestling battle with Kelly brother low single by Charles but Kelly shows toughness again company time happens with these outstanding young wrestlers the coaches want him to win but more than anything else want him to wrestle a match all the way that's sure show talent and a grip and gift.
They want him to develop.
They want him to develop better wrestlers.
It's not just about winning and losing.
It's are you getting better?
And that's a good point for coaches in high school and a good lesson for the young wrestlers out there.
You just got to go wrestle the best to get them to be the best.
Yeah, but I would say, Coach, I'm just about to go leading 13 to 6.
Kels Make it a shot.
Kelly Almost come to move away from it.
Now he comes in on a high cross but it's at the end of the match.
Oh, boy.
How much time left?
A minute.
Ten.
In the first period.
Really?
Watching these men wrestling for the next several years.
Charles Logan, Kelly, Jeff Kelly's been introduced.
He hasn't been.
And Kelly makes the first takedown.
Oh, man.
Nice counter nice move around by Kelly and he leads by Charles Big two to nothing right here it's it's Charles big shot right here but Kelly is able to really sprawl out keep out spin one motion Charles the Grammys the counter man false start Charles big movie not too fast talking about Blake going rolling out man That's a crowd of almost 14,000 people here in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Doesn't get to his feet.
Kelly brings him back.
You heard Bill Hennigan warn him against the slam.
Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
You're off.
Still down.
Out of bounds again, Charles Big scrambled from the from the feet.
Relax now.
Relax, Tom.
And you're on 30 seconds to go.
In the first period, Johnny Kelly You can just see on the ankle outcomes Kelly's big They're both good, hard workers.
They're just tough kids.
2 to 1.
We've seen some real talent here, a champ up and down the lineup of these two teams and we're going to keep seeing them.
I'll tell you, I know that Oklahoma State has the people.
Arizona State has four people.
So you and I have, some people I was choice not to.
I have to be some awfully tough teams to beat this up.
There's two Iowa State and Iowa undefeated before I would choose is down all right shelf it starts on the bottom it's 2 to 1 is his choice Hey bottom up top, man.
You're on Jeff Kelly.
It's his first match back for quite a while.
Yeah, he's had an injury.
He had torn cartilage in the knee, and so he's coming back from an injury that kept him out of the lineup.
Do and potentially dangerous time.
It's going to be a penalty that's potentially dangerous.
You get it out there again.
It's going to be illegal.
You keep it on your hip.
And in talking to Kelly about that ankle movement is dangerous to the knee.
Randy Kelly follows it around, but not quickly enough.
He tells me it's very tough on the bottom, especially in his first year.
Yeah, that's what you call not giving up.
He knows what he wants.
He went after it and he just kept going, put the moves together until he was out to.
To circle on the edge.
Now.
Circle on the edge.
Kelly got a takedown.
First period.
Charles Big escape and escape.
The start of the second period riding time 46 seconds for Kelly.
Not enough for a point.
Well, Coach Gable calls Chelsea a meet wrestler.
He says in the practice room, you just don't even know what's going to happen because things that he can do out in front of people are just incredible.
And they don't happen in the Mac in the room.
Kelly gets the whole thing off and no bell heading was not at all sure.
You know, little warning.
There's a cautious warning Phil heading against him given this is he didn't want him complaining there was no control.
Evans was fit to be tied here and given to the the okay.
Okay.
We also have we also have one point Iowa State, a technical violation for clearing Iowa for one point Iowa State.
Iowa is called for swearing here.
And I don't know I don't know who said you get four points for swearing, technical violation for swearing.
You got one point on that.
We're both up.
That was no takedown.
I can't see.
And it's a slow start.
Kelly, thank you both.
Thought there was no control over there.
Brittany, 1.3 to 2.
I'm sure the crowd doesn't know what happened, but apparently Chelsea said something when they were on the edge there that the coach that Bill Clinton called center.
Things get emotional in Iowa State.
Iowa go.
And it doesn't it doesn't have to be wrestlers that have been around for years.
These wrestlers that say, you know, they've known about the rivalry for 15 years since they were a little boy.
Kelly manages to counter gels making stuff center whirling dervish in there.
There's Carlos, though, doing a nice job of countering each other's moves down a lot of talent.
Kelly leads 3 to 2 second period with 29 seconds left.
Kelly has 46 seconds of riding time, so the circle Circle, this is real dramatic.
Coming down to the last few matches, the streak of 43 and it's a close match as well.
Every move, in fact, is important.
I'll tell you, I don't, I think, have to win this one.
I do, too.
They have to win this one.
They figure that maybe they think is going to beat man hours deal.
But you would hate to have to go out there and try to get extra points.
And then they face a national champion at 90 and they don't want to lose too many points to make up by simply I know he swore he swore really loud.
That's a technical violation.
One point that Gable asked what the point was given to Iowa, for Iowa State, for and he was just told by Phil Henning, go tell that remark, Kelly.
It starts on the bottom, a third period.
He has 46 seconds of riding time.
Charles Big is not a man who likes the ride much.
So Kelly gets loose.
Two here we are in the second, third period and, Kelly manages to defend against the intensity of Carlsberg's attack out of bounds, no cupping third period.
Who can suck it up and go?
That's right.
You said it best.
You said the last word.
Go.
They've got to put the offense on.
Somebody got to make it happen.
I'll circle.
I'll think the show so far, they used about 30 seconds in the middle, 4 to 2.
Kelly, A takedown, a penalty point and an escape.
CHARLES Big escape, twice.
But he hasn't taken Kelly down yet.
And he's going to have to do it to win or tie.
Here comes Charles big blocking off.
He out of out fortitude and also Kelly will have to stay active Yeah right but we're getting down to the point, Doug, where it's not going to make that much difference.
Does he have a warning?
No, he doesn't even have a warning.
And, you know, the whole match is different than the one before.
And it's not going to be stalling, is not going to come into it.
Doesn't look like Jeff Kelly of Iowa State, a sophomore, really his first year in the lineup.
Mark Charles, big of Iowa, just come in the second semester, his second semester of school as a first year.
Al Starling has been called against Kelly.
Stalling has been called oh no on about Kelly's feels very comfortable where he is as far as fighting off coasting right down for backing out.
But if he can get a fight off the clock, that's a penalties and Kelly's big is tough.
If he gets a takedown, he ties it.
And a tie is a lot better than a loss right here for Iowa.
Yes, but I still think Iowa needs to win this match or Iowa State liable to pick up a pretty good margin here.
It's going to have to be an awful slick move right here, Kels.
Big is going to have to throw it.
He does, but he can't turn it around.
Well, that's it, guys.
And it is now 4 to 2.
Jeff Kelly of Iowa.
Big win by Jeff Kelly.
It was a huge win for Iowa State because Iowa State now goes up 16 to 6 at the Hawkeyes home arena.
And I think it's possible that the it's possible that this time as a ten point for you because of that after the match right now something is going on here between the referee and Jim give us an idea.
The doctor unsportsmanlike conduct after the whistle was blown in Iowa state for swearing deduct one t point for unsportsmanlike conduct, deducted a team point and that really hurt.
Instead of 16 to 6, it is now the 15 the same procedure after they shake hands, he comes off to me and says, that's bull#*#*#*#*.
No, no.
I penalized Joe Smith for swearing after the match.
So if I also had to penalize your kid but occurred after the time was up and before him, they are now showing what happened here.
There's a Van Dale, as you're out there waiting and it is a point deducted from Iowa State for an after the match technical violation.
Well, here we go with the big and this is a big match.
It becomes even bigger for Iowa with Alger here.
He needs to really turn it on and to like and it's 15 to 6, nine point difference.
But I'll tell you right now, if Bowker expects to win at 190, Iowa is going to need to fall to pin and that are failing.
Alger are really after each other.
Men are about to have to get a pin.
That's right.
And that's what it's come down to.
If that's what's happened now, if it were a 16 to 6 center, let's go back.
Yeah, I mean and point you know, it still leaves Iowa open to to win this meet with two with two pins but you wouldn't expect it with this match.
But Grace Alger does the unexpected.
Of course, you can Can't say for sure who's going to win in 199.
Nobody wins until it.
That's right.
So we will to tough 177 pounders man hours deal of Iowa state finished third in the nation at 167 two years ago.
Alger won the £167 national title last year.
Now they're up at a higher weight.
Alger just recently.
He feels very comfortable here.
Vanguard sales rank second Alger from Lisbon.
Come on, boy just beat Apple and our sales from Waterloo West those great wrestling tradition all over town is pushing All you're doing is holding on.
That's opening up talks to both wrestlers are out there trying to jerk the man's head around.
And he almost got behind quickly with that.
Alger is very rangy, has a reputation as a tournament.
Yeah, he does.
He has a reputation to win in the big matches.
He's not scared of anybody intimidates.
He's an intimidator all the way.
The ten people, Alger, Intimidators, everybody knows there's the first pick out.
Now take out Go Thunder Escape, both out and after the escape, it's 2 to 1 and our steals are real.
It's real hard to wrestle.
I mean, he's he's lanky.
He's and, you know, he kind of has the same attitude as Alger.
I don't think he really doesn't think he can be beat either.
Alger doesn't think he can be beat.
You lose, Mike.
That's on edge, on the edge, 2 to 1.
And Ansell goes to the leg, just keeps coming up, Alger wrestling up at 177.
He began his career at Iowa at 158.
And you know he's not so much heavier.
He's just bigger.
He's got more muscle on him.
He's got less body fat than he did down it.
167 Must be fun to eat, too.
Yeah, probably having a little bit more.
Make the crowd Here come Iowa State's been backing off and here they think man feels good again.
But he's got this now.
He's got a follow through.
He did at that knee, follow through for two technically nicely done there by Al Jerry follow through extremely well or one right here.
He had the knee up, but he's got to finish it.
And he took him away from where he had a base cooking towards his the leg that he had up was able to dump him for two.
It is 4 to 110 seconds running time.
While it might have been a set top man, you're on.
Al Gore was the winner between these two in high school go and for five years they haven't met in college.
And it's kind of appropriate that they meet here in the big ones.
Al Gore wrestling very well on top.
So so now Rice, Al Gore.
Let's go quickly.
One of the best and some of the most intense wrestlers that Dan Gable has ever had.
He's really never had another one like him.
That's the end of a period of 24 seconds to right in time for our man hours.
Bill gets his choice, takes down.
Very few wrestlers are able to lead a team like Royce Alger.
Just that presence.
They go out, they worry about the way the things are going now.
That's where Royce is right now.
He's probably about the way things are going for Iowa.
And he says talking is not going to do any good.
Now it's just wrestling with Feel Away gives him the escape or to figures.
He can probably take that last nail down or certainly maybe getting some solid outer underhook with his right arm keeping man hours deal away.
What's up?
Out of out.
Back on their feet.
There's Dan Gable.
It's going hasn't gone the way he wanted it to go.
Those two matches at 158 167.
There's a nice big tall Yeah he's got him in the single now and again.
He wants to finish it.
He's got the leg up, he pulls him out.
The fella cut across that cross for the double and then our bail bail out.
Alger had a lot of ways he could have gone there.
He could have come step back, lowered his level for a dump or cut across for the double.
And that's what he chose really in control there, if you want to be when you had that leg up.
Well, Al Gore wants to turn back after El over, if he can.
He'll probably stay down there and try to turn it now that our sails on his feet and our escape, that makes it 6 to 3.
Alger scores, Iowa State 15, Iowa six.
Iowa State did have a ten point deducted here just a few minutes ago, but they lead by nine with three matches to go at that hour.
Dale is called out for calling it the wall in the middle, getting close to a snap match here after they're just slapping it up.
Alger, you've got to circle the post.
He goes, are you going to lose a penalty point now?
He goes straight at you and you heard Phil Henning tell that our Phil, how he's going to have to avoid the penalty circle.
Don't back up.
A.L.
Scott got in a body lock from Alger to he call it two to no and immediately at bat it gets up and grabs him.
The two other coaches Jim Gibbons left Patterson and he before they got coach Gibbons is caught after Phil heading good lesson he just wanted to tell Vanderbilt what he wanted him to do right there.
One point unsportsmanlike conduct by Christie State.
One point I boycotting but that was great right here we can't hear the horn.
Oh is another point another point here for a penalty I think unsportsmanlike conduct on Iowa State.
Listen, that's against better judgment.
I felt your hips hit right before the buzzer went.
Now, that's my judgment period.
And you can't and you can't argue with it.
Okay.
That's the way it is.
You're down.
Let's go down here.
Run.
And it's now 9 to 3.
Alger starts on the bottom.
He's out.
And the free Oh, Pat, ours.
Dale is allowing himself to get a loose ball.
You pushed him to me.
It's even now let's call it JR wants him to get in.
You don't want to lose your temper on the other guy's turn.
And the three here Iowa State leads by 19 points with three matches.
This one included young undecided.
What the fans are brought about here is that Nadal is just on the edge all the time here.
He's there now to push him out, whether or not he's stolen or not, he is allowing Alger to push him out.
He's got to have more presence.
And he didn't.
He's got a circle.
That's right.
This is the line now to oh Alger is doing what he wants.
That's right.
That's exactly what he wants to do as a defender.
And our bill is not really on the back center.
Seattle just taking care of business right here and is thinking too much about how things aren't going his way.
He's got to get in and take his offense.
Don't pick the first two or three steps backwards.
He's got a lot of talent that needs to take it to him.
I'll just just going about it in the workmanlike fashion.
Let's put the tremendous pressure on the £180 match.
Every one of these matches is tough.
Now on circles.
The Iowa State wins one of well, yeah, and Iowa has got a great young wrestler and Brooks Simpson.
And, you know, you never know.
You never know.
He knows he's the underdog.
You'd like to be able to show everybody watching tonight in the stands it reinforce it.
You never know again how to be able to get back to Van De La Salle.
Can't win standing there.
He can't score points standing there.
He's got an eight point victory against him and he doesn't circle.
He's not pushing.
All you're doing is holding on.
That's not stalling.
That's Russell in the middle.
The point is bananas.
They all need to get to eliminate that eight point by coming in there four points and hours.
They'll make a shot.
But here comes out there on the counter for the single leg with 2 seconds left.
And it is no riding time this no riding time.
But a major decision for Royce Al Gore can take over Mike, better still, one of the toughest competitors he'll have to face this year at £177.
And the team score is now 15 to 10, 50 to 10.
And here comes a very important match for Iowa State, because Iowa is favored by heavyweights.
The last time, suddenly our men cope with him and he beat them here in a decision last year.
And Iowa State's Voelker is up against a fine sophomore from Iowa, from Newton, Iowa.
Brooks Simpson There's no doubt who's the favorite here, But I have a feeling that Simpson's I've got a young man and says, okay, this is where I'm at and I'm going give it my best shot.
And in his mind, he's the type of person he's a winner because I'm going to beat him.
And that's the kind of attitude you have to have both up again.
Two Iowa High School products.
Voelker Kansas Dallas Center, he's a junior, won the national championship last year.
Simpson won the state title two years ago at Newton.
That's right.
You know, Dallas Center, Newton small town Iowa is so much a part of wrestling here.
We have a lot of small towns that contribute to the major college stars.
Stalemate.
Lisburn woke up rent you bed Webster City it's it's it's great I come from a small town in fact there are 50 people from the Lions Club with morning sun up up in the stands tonight we love our wrestling at morning said it's a proud heritage of wrestling there.
50 people.
Well, that's over ten.
That's right.
That's over.
That's a big percentage of our town.
It's Simpson against Falkirk was critical mass Iowa against Iowa State because the Cyclones lead off the Hawks turf after 43 straight victories.
Dan Gable's winning record here is on the line.
Let's ride over to Simpson's controlling the Volker's head so we are able do quite what he wants to do.
Volker won the national championship last year after a fine season, the only lost twice now this year he's lost once to a colleague of his, Mike DAVIES of Arizona State, for blocking off both stalling.
And he won a return match.
They were both warned for how stalling will be up a point offense.
A lot of tension here on the on the two benches watching this last year walk aro since recovering Howard Simpson and very well, nothing to show for it right here.
Simpson needs to put his hips down and Booker gets the takedown.
He just covered it well.
He covered it very well there.
Simpson gave it a good fight, though.
That was one of those scrambles where, you know, everybody in the crowd is twitching around in their seat.
Clearly, you and I know we were not to do nothing in favor of Voelker.
You know, still down is a lot of Mark and Gable says that Brooks is very talented.
He has great potential.
He is coming off a knee problem, however.
And so he's probably not of the kind of shape he's going to be here and he's climbing here, you know.
Oh, yeah, potentially dangerous.
You in on your neck like that.
You're down.
Well, Simpson probably feels that it was taken away from him there because he feels he was starting to Granby roll from the standing position there He's tough a lot I mean it's just a little off He's a roller Whoa boy I'll tell you a lot of a lot of excitement here He's got a good the crowd was up for a second.
They thought Simpson might be putting Voelker in some real trouble.
I was choice.
I was choice.
Top bottom feeder tougher I would choose is down.
Simpson will start down Voelker up.
All right.
Let's see that right here.
You took him right down the top, man.
You see, this is Brooks starting.
What he wanted to think of was some type of Grand B series and in Granby, look, all right, Bulker hits on the whistle and flattens Simpson out.
Good move by Simpson.
He's not fighting.
And he's like, oh, fun.
You know, he had control of the hand.
And when you have control of a hand, you're out.
Eric Voelker of Iowa State against Brooks Simpson of Iowa.
Voelker knows very well that he's expected to win and that he has to win.
And Iowa State is then going to take Iowa at home in two and the hands take down.
For Voelker, it's a12 guys with a lot of heart.
I'll tell you who could look really impressed with these two teams up and down the line.
Yeah, this is a I think some of the best top to bottom talent we've seen.
I agree with you there.
We saw him competitive Simpson trying to come out but Voelker had him on his back for a two point near-fall to near fall he put himself there was Hill Simpson through the middle.
Oh, Walker's in trouble gophers in serious trouble here.
Gophers in serious trouble.
Oh, oh, oh.
He's got a lot of room to modify play A lot of times this is a serious problem for Iowa State.
30 seconds left.
Hey, Brandon.
Oh, can you believe it?
Well, I think the crowd scene at best is something about that 43 match streak.
Something always happens in Iowa, Iowa State, and I don't think anybody could think of anything more surprising then that right here, chest to chest, he had him.
Phil Henning says he caught him for a second with both shoulders down to the man.
And now Iowa is probably in really good shape because they now lead 16 to 15.
But, Doug, it's not over yet.
Just like we said before.
Of course, the favorites marksmen linger.
But like I said, Eddie Banning says I feel good about my heavyweight.
This thing has come down to the last minute and you're not going to catch me at I'll tell you, Boca was ahead 6 to 1.
He's just got a two point here for oh, and Simpson made his mark as a hawk.
This is team personnel.
You can't penalize a whole team for spectators.
Oh, we're allowed to say that conversation is because a lot of people came down.
The crowd out of the crowd.
The pin point was taken away a while ago or it would be 16 off.
And then back down, take down for settling early, trying to protect his team.
He's trying to put the cradle on right here.
He's really looking aggressive.
The Crossface Crossface, if he can get it settling early.
We've had wrestling this year to think about it, but not play football is electability in football is used up.
So he's been able to concentrate on this sport.
How many times, Doug Now, who would have called this the fall by Brooks Simpson or a win by Brooks Hanson?
Not us, no.
And I said, you know, Brooks Simpson, love to prove everybody wrong.
Boy, did he want to.
There's a burning desire in his heart.
It happens every time in a big match like this, somebody unexpected comes out top in his hand.
Walker was leading 6 to 1 when he got caught on his back.
Think that there has been serious trouble again and it's going to end right here.
It'll end right here.
And there was an amazing that's has to rank as one of the great comebacks of damn cable's teams.
That is something he's got to be proud of his team after that.
And Iowa State is just absolutely stunning what happened in the last two matches.
You look at the stretch.
Well, I know it is 22 to 15 at the end of this and it's in the middle of the £177 match.
There it was.
It was Iowa State, 15 and Iowa, six F with three matches left to go.
And one of them had Iowa State's national champion.
And it really sets the stage for the next one.
Oh, boy, oh, boy.
You know, it's it's it's unfortunate.
Everybody should be relishing this victory, and I'm sure they are.
But know what's in the minds of the Iowa State people.
They're saying, hey, I can't wait for the next one and neither can I. I'll I'll tell you, Dan is got a lot of very fine young freshmen and sophomores and the next time they meet, they're going to be tougher.
So, oh, Dan has to be happy about this and has to make it very happy.
This crowd of almost 14,000 people, nearly all of Iowa fans are celebrating here at the end of a stunning turnaround.
Penn at 190 by Brooks Simpson over national champion Eric Walker.
He was down 6 to 1 when he caught Walker on his back.
And Then a fall by Mark Seliger over Andy Koch the other matches.
Let's go back really very quickly before we have to leave you, Steve Martin, beat them night three to nothing for Iowa.
For Iowa, Brandt, Penrith, 11 to 5 over Steve Knight, then Iowa State won the next well, they won the next five matches.
They won five matches in the middle.
Kevin 6 to 1 over Hapoel gassy, seven to nothing over Pearson.
Krieger 18 to 7 over.
Carpenter.
That was an extra point with a major take, 4 to 3 over Heffernan And that looked like maybe it was a big break for Iowa State and then it won 67.
Kelly beat Chelsea 4 to 2 and Iowa State was up by nine by ten, and gotten ten points deducted.
And then up here came into the hundred and 77.
And what happened then is just people are going to be talking about it for a long, long time.
