Iowa Public Television Sports brings you the big showdown between the Iowa State cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Hello, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
And here here we go again with Iowa State and Iowa.
And it's just another of the college wrestling makes.
This is a weekend special.
We're also here on Tuesday nights at 9:00.
And speaking of weekend specials, we have a big one coming up that we didn't know about before.
We just found out that we have the Iowa, Oklahoma State and Stillwater meet February 11.
That's going to be an exciting rematch.
That'll be great because that was the best match of the national team championship we saw last week in Virginia.
And we welcome you to watch Kansas and Minnesota, Virginia, Florida, Pennsylvania, as well as in Iowa here on public television.
Well, it's Iowa State against Iowa.
These teams met in Virginia talking about that tournament.
We saw the best teams in the country.
What did you think?
Well, it's midseason.
It was a mid season tournament, but I was impressed.
And I think it just goes to show how close the NCAA is are going to be.
Well, as a matter of fact, one thing that impressed us was how closely the teams finished in that tournament to the way they were ranked going into it.
Well, teams.
Yeah.
And I see you see it right there.
The top three teams, they're right there.
And with Iowa State, Nebraska and a few others in the NCAA, these are going to be great.
Of course, Iowa and Iowa State.
Matt, it was a strange thing, but they met twice in that tournament, once in the championship round and then again for third place after Iowa State wrestled back and the second time a lot closer.
Well, it was a disappointing start for Coach Gibbons and his team.
They didn't win a match.
That's the first time that's happened in this series.
But the second time through, it was a little better.
And he's hoping for better things tonight.
Now, Iowa, on the other hand, thinks they're going to have to be going at it because they have big meats coming up.
Well, they really do.
And gave the likes the progression of his young team.
But he felt they went a little backwards with their defeat to Oklahoma State and their performance the second time through to Iowa State.
So he's looking for better things tonight.
Let's talk about a couple of the match ups.
One and £126 between.
Right of wrestlers at Iowa State.
It's Gary McCall.
Well, Gary McCall, a two time all-American, always seems to come through at NCAA time.
But in the midseason, he's usually a question mark.
And right now he's hurt.
And that question remains.
And he's going to have to be tough because Terry Brands is in there and he looked awfully tough in the Virginia meet.
Well, he really did.
He wasn't defeated at all except by the national champion last year, Kendall Cross.
And that was a 14 to 10 donnybrook Brandes is on right now.
Let's talk about £158.
I'll tell you what, be talking about these two young men for a couple of more years, Steve Hamilton of Iowa State.
Well, Steve Hamilton has not lost a match in his last 15 matches, and he's coming off a big three, two two victory over his arch rival, Mark Riley.
And he beat Mark Ryle in the last time out.
But Gable hopes it's going to be a different island out there.
And this time, well, a different island, there's a different crowd.
It's Carver, Hawkeye Arena.
He needs intensity.
What better place to have it in a dangerous thrower can really turn it on.
But it's got to be here in Carver.
This is how the last match was set up.
Well, Hamilton uses a little roll here to turn it into a reversal, which led him to his 3 to 2 victory.
And those kinds of moves are important.
And they settled big feet.
And as we say many times when Iowa and Iowa State got together, the cliche is lightning can strike and you want to be here.
When it does happen.
Iowa State have to do what?
Well, I think Iowa State has to do two things.
They have to get out fast.
They have to get out fast in the first two matches.
And they have to keep their intensity throughout the meet.
They have to go 7 minutes every match.
And Iowa, well, I think Iowa can't look too far past.
I know they have Oklahoma State and Arizona State up in the next few weeks, but they got to wrestle for today and forget about tomorrow.
So I'll be here we go, Iowa and Iowa State next on Iowa Public Television.
Be sure to watch college wrestling Tuesday night at nine as the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame meet the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Notre Dame is coming off their best season ever, while the Cornhuskers feature a host of former Iowa prep standouts, including 1989 NCAA all-American Jason Calvert of Albion.
It's Notre Dame and Nebraska Tuesday night at nine here on Iowa Public Television.
We're back at the Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City for the big intrastate showdown between Iowa State and Iowa.
In wrestling, the top seven teams represented here.
And this is what's happened through the series.
Iowa leads the series Iowa won that last match there, 24 to 13.
In the third place meet of the Virginia dual national team championships last week.
And it was very close up to £190.
And there was an injury to fall at heavyweight.
So Iowa State is hoping to improve today to make it even closer.
But those are the matchups.
Now.
There are multiple weigh ins at various places.
Martin or Zapata will go for Iowa at 118.
You don't see much difference until 150 Colt Vette of Eagle Grove might very well be in the Iowa State line up at that weight instead of Jackson.
We'll have to wait and see in the upper weights.
There are some multiple weigh ins too, for both teams, and they're at £177.
The Kelly Brothers, they represent each school and I don't think you'll see a Kelly wrestle a Kelly today.
Whoever Iowa stands out, I think Iowa State will match it up accordingly to maybe keep the two Kellys from wrestling for the second week in a row.
The two brothers met each other twice last week, the first time that's ever happened between them and at heavyweight Iowa State has two possibilities.
Cutler and Todd Kinney, the referee.
Today, is going to be Pete George of Wheat and Illinois.
And as usual, our referee has a microphone so that you can hear that and watch as he talks to the wrestlers and as he sometimes gets in these little conversations with coaches over one point or another, they discuss the rule book in a gentlemanly way from time to time, just little discussions.
And it's a stormy day, as you know, in the state of Iowa.
So there are some people who who got here after a long and difficult drive, and there are still lots of people in Carver Hawkeye Arena, as there are over and over again Now.
This is the way these teams have done over the years and NCAA tournaments, either first or second, 30 times between them.
Iowa has won 11, Iowa State has won six.
And we're going to have a question later on in our college wrestling quiz about how often these teams have finished high.
And you might look ahead to that along the way.
College wrestling quiz.
You have a coaching staff.
You see Dan Gable with a jacket and here on the front there is Mark Johnson with a nice dapper pink tie, Jim Gibbons, the coach of Iowa State, and less Anderson on his left, one of the long time mainstays of the Iowa State program, both as a national champion wrestler and as a coach.
We're in Iowa City.
It's the first of two leagues between these teams and T.J., £118.
We're going to look at zapper.
Chad Zappa has come out against Kale sponsor.
Well, I think it's really interesting because both wrestlers are not usually in this lineup.
This year, Martin has been the norm, 118 pounder for Iowa and what for Iowa State.
So both coaches are trying out new people and they're both redshirt freshman.
They both are outstanding high school prospects coming out of high school and both from Iowa.
Yeah, it's really going to be exciting right here to see what happens.
Now sponsor comes into this program at Iowa State behind Shaun.
What most of the year but he wrestled and wrestled rather well in the second meet against Iowa in the Virginia duals third place meet remember that in these seven minute matches the first 3 minutes start on the feet.
Second period is 2 minutes long.
The third period is 2 minutes long.
Zapotec All in the black against sponsor in the red.
Well we have a big hundred and 18 counter and sponsor right here and I think you can see the size difference but Zapotec is a very strong physical wrestler himself, so he really counters that length and height of sponsor with his strength.
They both have good records and are both counted on heavily throughout their careers, which are just really beginning for the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes.
That's a beautiful kneecap.
Try by Zach, utterly carted away from it.
He's carted away by sponsor and didn't score, but he's back in that headlock again.
He likes to use that knee tap, as they call it, off the headlock.
Well, be interesting here because Spottiswoode did a nice job of countering because that's one of the Capitals favorite moves, little knee tap and he does it well.
So to come out was good but I believe that as much weight as sponsor probably pulls to get the 118 the question mark is going to be how long can he keep this this pace up right here.
Well he is going to have to be putting a little more pace on because Apatow's making all the moves now.
Hey, early in the match, there is the other 118 pounder.
He's been starting a lot this year that Steve Martin, the senior and for the Hawkeyes, we're at it again.
How much of a huge we're about a minute and a half into the first period and about a minute and a half to go.
To give you an example of some of the talent out here on the mat Zappacosta with 67 a know his last two years in high school at Centreville, Iowa, and was a two time state champion in that time sponsor.
Cale sponsor only lost once he was 59 and won his last two years actually is more than that.
He is 36 know his senior year in 29 and one his junior year.
So you can see we've got a couple of talented young men out there.
They're going to here at his hometown is Johnston, Iowa, which is also the hometown of Iowa Public Television.
By the way, Zaffino trying to drop his man's head and come around behind, hasn't been able to do it.
No score here yet with about 35 seconds to go, go, zap.
It'll go in the black guys, 36 kale sponsor from Iowa State.
In the red, we're beginning the Cyclones, Hawkeyes first meet at home in the way and the pairings.
But this is the third time they've met in just about a week.
The two teams, not the two wrestlers.
As far as I know, it's a first.
This is the first time we've met.
That was Apple has been controlling the action here, but I'm sure that Coach Cable would like to see him just move a little bit more with his feet, move around, get in, keep from a few more positions right there, because he could dominate right here, but he's not quite doing it.
And that's the end of the period.
We had only a second to go when the whistle blows and Iowa State gets its choice.
Iowa State takes down sponsor.
We'll get a choice in the second period, The next meet, next match at 126, the Iowa referee will get his chance at the beginning of the second period.
And then whoever takes the choice in the second period gives it over to the other man in the third period.
So with a tie score, no score sponsor chooses down, hoping to escape four points ahead of the sponsor.
Definitely wants to be on his feet.
He wants to work it out here, try to cut off and get out of there.
But he's not.
He's got to come up, control the hands, cut away and get back to his feet.
He needs to grow here.
And no good cigars happen.
Old manages to stay behind.
Riding time can be a factor, too, as you know, if one wrestler controls the other man.
A minute more in the balance of the match in the total match than his opponent, he gets a point right in time point which is tacked on after everything else is over.
Well, I think you're seeing a crucial part of the match right here.
I don't that sponsor needs to get out.
He cannot let Zapata ride him like this, flattened him out and get the right time.
But more important, get the confidence, get the domination an audience want or need for work and get out of there.
Right now, he cannot let Zapata control his arms and his wrist like he is right now.
Got the ankle and the arm bar driving into him and the sponsor is a lot flatter than he would like to be and a lot of riding time to him.
And he's got to zap it all as a minute and 10 seconds.
And now he flattens across the back, get off the whining green warning.
The official has issued a warning to the Iowa wrestler for I suspect, for being parallel across the back.
Well, the only thing I can see is there when he pulled in that wrist, he went and he pulled up the ankle also and went parallel on top of it right there.
And that's what must be Pete.
George must have been looking at that.
Actually, he's been working pretty hard up into the air responsible with just needs to move more and get out right there.
He needs to get the one which it looks like he can if he can face out and he's got it.
Very important.
One point for him and it's one or nothing in favor of sponsor and I know Coach Gibbons would like sponsor now to pressures Apple with that warning on him take advantage of what he has right there.
He's got one point he's got a single leg bye bye sponsor the first real offensive move he's been able to make.
Now he has to finish it and zap sprawling out nicely is able to counter that.
And he's in a tough position on top of that quarter.
NELSON Well, here is what we talking about.
The Iowa State wrestling sponsor right now has a little bit of advantage if he can get the gas to do it because he can't gas out, he's got to go forward, get his nose in there and wrestle tough last period because he has a warning on Apple and he's got one point.
But Zap has riding time.
Zap, It'll has a minute and a half.
And now the question is, it's often the case with freshmen.
They have trouble getting out the bottom.
They're not used to being underneath.
And that's sometimes the last thing they learn.
But we'll see whether Zap has anywhere near as much troubl Well, he's on the side of his hips right now.
He's down on the side.
He doesn't want to be underneath Capitol's hips.
And right now he's getting awful dangerously close to it with a leg in sponsor and a half Nelson Now let's go.
Stalemate.
Fishel doesn't think it's going anywhere.
He wants him to start over again.
How much riding time is there?
9 seconds still exist here for his capital.
He still has that potential point.
If he can get out in 9 seconds, he has it.
We'll see right here.
What sponsor did was he was able to stay and cling to him on that roll through right there.
And that's very important because he's a good swinging rider now, that fellow from Iowa, that must get out so he can race that all written right in Times gone.
Now, it's very critical for Zapiro to get out there for up to an hour, 48 seconds, the riding time.
It's 1 to 1 at the first point for Zapiro.
And it's clean right now because there is no riding time back.
And here we go into the last minute of the match.
But he still has the warning.
Who has the warning?
It's the Iowa wrestling sponsor has to know that for Iowa State and put the pressure on him if he wants to take advantage of the situations that happened on the edge of the mat, for example, was not able to score.
We have 57 seconds to go in a11 match at £118.
You're just joined us.
You're just in time to see every weight, £118.
We're in the last 45 seconds now.
Bonds were in the red for Iowa State against Chad's capital of Iowa.
A true freshman tied one one front headlock position for Zapp.
It'll give the their sponsor not able to get the position he would like either they got on the mat nothing happening here now Zapata goes for the trip the sponsor had enough power to come away from it.
Well, right here.
If that was going on top Sponsor is doing the same on his feet right here.
He's not taking advantage.
He's not going.
Now they're a sponsor and he saved himself from a warning for me to veto again.
But sponsor faced off.
And now we have 4 seconds to go and it could end up here.
One one.
Zapatero, I've done a nice job of being aggressive here on his feet, but sponsor has responded with the counters.
Oh, right at the end.
Right at the end.
Wow.
ORTEGA That's the intensity Coach Gibbons is talking about right there.
Zappos showed it 7 minutes done, sponsor wrestled 6 minutes, 58 seconds, and with 4 seconds to go, it was 1 to 1.
And Zach Little scored at the very end.
With me right there is the takedown and it's all about intensity.
So Capital had it for 7 minutes.
He took it down.
He didn't give up right here.
Watch cable.
That's what it's all about, right?
They're going all the way through.
And so in a last minute crash, it's a three to nothing Iowa scoring over Iowa State.
And now we go to £126 between the Cyclones and the Hawkeyes.
Terry Brands, the home wrestler in the black from Iowa against Gary McCall from Iowa State.
And Gary McCall is the all-American here.
Terry Brands certainly hopes to have all-American status all four years if things go the way they're working now.
Gary McCall has a whistle, something of a groin pull that was bothering him a little bit at Virginia in the national team championships.
But he's out here ready to go.
Oh, this is the first of the brands Twins.
You have your head for Iowa.
Boy, that is some that is some events there to go with.
4 seconds to go.
Well, I think it's such a long 4 seconds ago.
It's a learning situation for both wrestlers.
For Cal Sport.
There we see Zapp talking about it with Royce Alger, National Champion from from Iowa.
Now an assistant coach.
Brandes tried to throw McCall by and go behind McCall good stable solid wrestler managed just this face off with him again keep his position.
You know, it's hard for me to get that last match out of my mind to Doug because I was thinking so close to getting what they needed.
Same thing, same kind of move brands losing his upper body power.
But it happened on the edge of the mat.
No score.
We have a minute gone in the first period.
Yeah.
And Iowa, you know in a home meet like this doesn't home visiting teams don't need to have something like that happen.
Well that's what was impressive about sponsor there for almost the whole match He stayed in it.
He was tough you know, the whole bit.
The counters.
He had the crowd against them, the whole bit.
And if they could have come away with a draw right there.
But it was what Coach Gibbons had talked about, the intensity.
But also, again, this is the third time they've wrestled.
This gives coach there's a warning against McCall for backing up and Brant immediately goes in on the knee, goes to the other side.
He has the power ankle.
That's the key to this.
Now question is can he stay in?
Yes, he does.
But the takedown buffalo had to stop on a whistle.
Here's a takedown.
He throws him by.
He just gets him out of position.
He cuts the corner and gets the side.
Now he's in on the single.
But you see where he has a toe.
Now he knows he has to keep his own toes in and he does with control for two points.
So brand's leading to the nothing goes on top against McCall call cannot switch.
He'd like to have tried that move now.
Looks like he wanted to stand up but brands is very tough on top.
The brands twins like to ride.
They don't like people to get away.
Crowd Cheers as brands close McCall back on the mat again and flattens him down with the Armbar.
Well, here again, here's an opportunity for McCall to get some momentum back by escaping Carrie Brands is riding very tough on the call Got to get away right now and there's his dad and mom, Cedar Rapids, probably wearing their cycling clothing up there, cheering Gary on the mic calls.
His son is now behind to the mat back here with about 50 seconds to go.
In the first period, it's Iowa against Iowa State.
The Hawks won the first match, three to nothing in the last second.
Yeah, the elbow at the elbow, three to nothing.
Iowa over Iowa State brand still continues to ride 36 brands controls that for that tight waist and keeps the legs in there.
So McCall is not able to turn at all.
He like no success getting away.
Well, I'm sure right now Terry Brand's a very tough ride on top.
But it's also that groin pull by McCall probably is bothering him a little bit.
He's not able to explode out of there.
But with that pressure from brands, it'd be tough no matter whether you healthy or not.
Our brands go right up top.
He's going to try to turn it, man, with a few seconds left in the first period to do nothing with a lot of riding time, a minute and 22 seconds worth for Terry Brands.
If he Franz gets his choice and he defers to McCall, McCall looks at his coach, Red takes down, says I'll go down.
Well, he says down with a little bit of hesitancy hesitancy here.
But he knows that he's going to have to score from underneath if he's going to win this match.
So here's the telltale of this whole meat right here.
He's got to escape and he's got to do it fast.
He got it.
Hold it, Kevin.
Top man.
Referee Pete George sets him up.
McCall is on his base.
But you see, the explosion wasn't there.
No, it wasn't there.
And it allowed Terry Bradshaw to reach back for the ankle.
If you're going to make an impact from underneath, you got to do it with a hard pressure into the opponent on top of you that that pressure wasn't there.
The explosion wasn't there by McCall.
And I think his injuries bother him a little bit because he's not executing like he has in the past.
Now.
He needs to make that move again.
He can't get it.
He needs to get away from brand.
Yeah, he certainly didn't pick down to be written out the whole thing.
So that's certainly not his strategy.
But not only does he have to take brands down, he has to get up to take him down and get up front, then want to spend this period in this position.
We have a minute, almost a minute and 50 seconds are writing time for brands is now decide to crank on the arm cuts off the switch again.
Well, right here you see a pattern here.
McCall is really trying to perform a switch on the mat.
He's really kind of giving up the stand up as an escape.
And Tom and Terry Brands is controlling his hips too much.
Colletti to sit out.
McCall doesn't seem to have a lot of lateral quickness in this match.
I don't know if got it.
He's certainly not having much luck against brands with a switch.
Right.
And ladder in the third and certainly not doing it vertically either now so it's two to nothing here and we're on the right in time a world of writing time for brands here is here is a point charged against McCall Bell right now McCall down there next there's his brother Tom Brands, 134 pounder, ranked second in the nation waiting his turn.
Coach Gable intently watching this match right here at 126.
Barrett Davis giving him some encouragement.
25 seconds to go in the second period.
Iowa three Iowa State nothing on the team score at it's three to nothing in this Matt gets position McCall goes to the referee's position brands comes over him I hold or will there we go And again no explosion Brandt takes the angle to drive McCall down on the mat and he's you know been everything everything brands way so far.
Well, Gary McCall's a good, hard working kid with a car that's considered an escape by referee.
Pete George makes it 3 to 1, and McCall finally gets to his feet, 3 to 1, with just no time left In the second term, I was getting ready to say, Right.
Gary McCall is a good kid.
He's worked really hard in his career and, you know, he's got to be hurt for the fact that he is hurt.
He doesn't want to be hurt.
He doesn't want to wrestle this way.
And I'm sure that that injury has affected him.
Well, Jim Gibbons said that the problem he has is he can get in on a single leg, for instance, but a groin injury keeps him from lifting.
If he can't lift the hard too much to do, stand up off the bottom.
Well, I'm sure another problem he has is getting through an entire practice, you know, good hard work.
So it's a tough situation, especially when you're going up against somebody is rock hard and tough, as Terry Brand has managed to fight the hands and get in.
And now here he comes on the offense leading for the one double leg takedown.
But you go the way he did there.
He controls the hit.
He got out.
He went right back to control the hit boy.
He had control that he had.
He created the space, got in for the takedown, and now it's 6 to 1.
This is where Jim Gibbons wants to make sure that the opposite happens to what Dan Gable wants, that in the last few seconds of a meet, the last few minutes of a period at the end, you don't get blown out, right, if you don't give up the major decision right here.
Let's kick, you know, keep your respect, Gary McCall, stick your nose in there.
Let's go.
That's what Jim Gibbons is thinking right now.
Come on, you're in there.
Let's go.
Let's stick it in there.
You can do it against Terry Brands.
In this situation, in this arena, you can do it against anybody.
Remember, Brands has riding time.
It's a 7 to 2.
Start with that.
Here's the high crotch move by brands.
The Pauls gut the ankle.
It's the only thing keeping brands from not completing the takedown.
We're in the last minute.
See that in on the ankle a lot.
But even now we're getting close to major decision territory.
Let them go, making it 8 to 3.
And with riding time another takedown.
See so many wrestlers, once they get an escape or give an escape, they try to start over.
Terry Branson start over.
He just continues in on the legs.
W Look at that, Howard and down 10 to 3 and he'll you'll ride him out I think we'll try to he has to ride him out the feet to make a decision with the riding crowd because it's now with that an eight point difference that's away from ankle block up and back from here.
It will not appear that McCall is going to get away, but Ramsey's going to drive on him a little bit.
Control yard you can hammerlock from up down and it's over with riding time Jerry Brown 11 Gary McCall three And so it's now Iowa after the major decision seven and Iowa State nothing from Carver Hawkeye Arena on Iowa public television I'm down with Tim Johnson you're looking at one of the takedowns.
Well, this takedown right here, he's right on the buttocks, right there, controlling it, controlling the hips.
Now, if he had said to the man and brand possibly could have gotten two more points for back closure, but here the ball goes off the mat there and avoids two more points.
It was a tough match for Terry Branstad, but I'll tell you what, nobody could have had it done any better than Gary McCall against Terry Branstad situation and that was not a fully healthy Gary McCall.
Now we go Tom Brandes, who is was ranked second the last time this vote came out but he beat the top ranked man in the Virginia Duals National team tournament with moves like that.
And on Dan Knight's knee at Iowa State night across the back but Grams is the digger here.
No score yet Well that's nice counter by Knight right there and Knight has to avoid just what happened there getting letting Brandes getting on his leg so easily right there and he has to fight that off.
That's what his key to victory is.
There's Gary.
There's Barry Davis telling John Brandes how to change that level and get into those legs of Dan Knight.
Iowa State hasn't scored a takedown in these first two matches.
Iowa has five.
They've been in on the Cyclones a lot more than the opposite, and the reverse has been true on that.
You know, we saw at 118 a size difference between sponsor and ZAP.
I think we see the size difference here between brands.
Graham tonight Ramsey is much pickup drive by brand 2.4 take back here's why I would look at that little pick now he didn't get quite get the pick he got in on the single covered the hips, kept his feet in, got it points pulled it, cover him down then now Brandes comes over now leading two to nothing You got that takedown with just about a minute gone in the first period.
The first match they had in the national team championships was relatively close until the end of the third period when Brandes put it away 2 to 1 now after Knight's escape.
And it was one of those examples of how go Iowa hopes to do well all the way through.
And Jim Gibbons wants to see his man avoid those last minute problems, which they haven't been able to do so far.
Well, it's a year long coaching job.
Jim Gibbons knows it.
And every time that these coaching opportunities come up, they go back into the room, They work a little harder on it.
Knight reached under for a single.
Couldn't get it a minute and a half to go first period.
It's 2 to 1.
Brian will get it very near the edge of the mat.
Knight has his back to it and gets a warning today.
Steve Knight, Dan Knight's runner, an all-American at Iowa State.
A couple of years ago, the family from Clinton, a great wrestling family from Clinton, Iowa.
Dan Knight, one of the more highly sought high school wrestlers in the nation a few years ago, a four time state champion out of Clinton, but the freshman of the year last year from Sheldon, Iowa, Tom and fumbled himself a little bit.
He fell down and Knight got the takedown there, took advantage of a mistake.
You don't see that very often from grabs.
And now Knight leads three, two, two.
Even when GREENE tied after after the escape, three, three is a might be nothing more dangerous than a brand scoring high right here.
He doesn't like that in front of the crowd here.
We'll see how Tom Brandes first Iowa State takes on him on the leg.
So I asked about that grab that grab single of reach down by Graham from the outside didn't score.
It's very important that Knight was the man who was warned early he cannot make any back up moves in this mismatch or get caught inactive because it's a point from here on at the elbow 20 seconds to go Brandes controlling the head well Brandes can control the head.
He's got the picks, he's got the singles.
He can just pick the apart.
He can go from about any position.
He's very fluid in his position.
He's got a lot going for him and only a soft and then there's the point Knight is considered inactive by Pete George and that gives Brandes a points.
It's important in this type of matches 3 to 3 or 4 to 3.
Now with that point, it's important that Dan Mike composure and knows he's in the mat Matt state What do you want Knight gets his choice defers rally takes down leading by a point does what most wrestlers do in this position and they are leading by a point.
He takes the diving red assuming that he can get away right away and score quickly.
With that cover, it grabs and it didn't want to make any big fast moves there.
He's going to work the hands and come out that way.
Five, three.
There's a nice fit series right there.
He's set.
He cut away and got the one point escape.
Make it 5 to 3.
Brandes forcing Knight pushing him around the knight when he's in that position has is always vulnerable to being called for or stalling.
He has to find some way to make an attack.
Well, and he tries a little step through there inside Tripp.
But that's important also that he doesn't try anything, that he doesn't panic, that he keeps his basic maneuvers.
It's only 5 to 3 out of bounds.
Then I've got a finger in the eye.
So the injury time out is going to run for him another right while he's being looked at, Dan Gable comes out to talk to Tom Brant.
Here's how it happened.
All of them and every go on the edge.
Once again, Chris looks like he almost hit himself.
I'm not sure.
But he had he had the finger in the eye well before he got out of bounds and affected his vision a little bit.
That's Tom Brandes, as I was saying, freshman last year and freshman of the year.
In fact.
Yes, he did beat all he did beat the number one ranked man at that weight, Chuck Barbee from Oklahoma State.
And a heck of a man really, 2 to 1 match.
And they're number one and ranked to number one and number two ranked wrestlers in the nation.
So it's 5 to 3 here in favor of brands.
He has.
They each have a takedown.
Brant has escaped twice and he has a penalty point.
Well, here's where conditioning comes in.
We're halfway through the second period.
We know Tom Brandes is in really good condition.
Usually Dan Knight is the question mark right now, and he's got to keep his intensity and stay in there physically.
Double team, score seven to nothing.
Iowa won the first two in the last literally the last second.
They got a takedown that broke up a tie between capital and sponsor Capital One.
And then Terry Brandes got a major decision against Gary.
The knight has to circle in.
Knight has to circle in right here and make some attempts on his own or he's going to get stalled again.
He will have 28 seconds to go.
We're in the second period.
Dan Knight has offense.
He's just got to show it right here.
He's got to go in and use his offense.
He's got good defense, but he's got it.
He's got offense also.
He needs to use it right here.
Again, he tried that step in or just the first part of it.
Brandes made a shot from outside and so they're back even again after two two failures at takedowns go Grant's always moving, pushing and pushing in A knight that has two back ups.
Always.
He doesn't come up for something.
The circuit guards will follow him again.
Well, it's interesting.
Again, it is five three.
It's the last period right here.
And this is about where they were the first match.
Right?
Right.
National team.
And this is where Tom Brandes turned it on and pulled away.
And that's just exactly what Gable wants him to do here.
And it's just exactly what Coach Gibbons doesn't want to happen to his wrestler.
This time around.
Knight gets his choice, goes into the down position, trailing by two, has a chance to make it by one.
If he can escape right here.
And he definitely needs to know right time.
Brandes had made, according to our statistics here, seven takedown attempts and Knight had made two, and the But now Brandes is in a writing time search.
He has 15 seconds and counting.
Well, he's got good pressure on top of Dan Knight.
He's looking to flattening out and probably put in a few near rest and look risks and look to tilt.
So he's trying to pull that wrist in.
He's going to try to tilt him for a couple of points right here.
No, you're still down.
Knight was not able to face off and in reaction time to keep that position.
Brandes has eight balls this year.
Last year he was not the Pinner.
He's been this year.
And to expect that in a wrestler second year get a little more dangerous as they mature in that respect Caution Green caution against the top man before a lot of brands move a little bit too fast off the whistle to get it all set up again right now it's time to rock and branch flattens knight out Well he's got Brandes has a great tight waist right now and he's really got Knight flattened out.
Then he comes up tough looking for the near risk keeping.
Look at that hip pressure on top of him.
He's got good hip pressure.
He's getting completely flattened out.
Now.
He's going to have to come out to the side and try to try to pin him or he's going to get called for being parallel, as you see now.
He's got to come out, can't stay parallel.
But again, a point charge against the bottom man Knight for inactivity makes it safe.
The three play red.
Now the next penalty will be worth two points and after that it's disqualification.
And 45 seconds to go here.
And right time has been achieved by Brandes.
He just crossed the minute.
6 to 4 is the score here.
Let's go After the escape.
Given the knight, this is the important part of the match for both peoples.
Last half a minute and just a little more.
And brand came right around and scored.
It's an eight the floor.
Well, you know, he had to take the shot, but it's got to come through with it.
And there's not a shot that's going to going to work.
Now he's got to stick it in right now.
We're brands is going to run away.
Knight's got to stay right in there and get tough.
He's got it.
He's just got to show it.
And Brandes is beginning to turn it on.
This is where Iowa pulled away and Brandes pulled away from Knight in the national team championships the first time they met.
It's 10 to 6 after that flurry, and it took only about 20 seconds.
And Knight doesn't dare back up because he will be penalized.
Two more points.
Tom Branson on a nice single right here using his head to cut the angle and they got it point takedown and makes it 12 to 6 12 to 7 at the end.
He didn't get a major decision, but he had three takedowns in the last 35 or 40 seconds.
Wow.
Right inside the 30 to 7 chamber, Tom brands over Dan Knight and Marvel Hawkeye Arenas.
And after £134, it's Iowa and Iowa State.
That's a guy who I think probably the next time the rankings come out, he'll be ranked number one because he beat the number one man in town.
And you're right, Virginia will be the number one man, the number one man to go after at 134.
And now somewhere along here, the cyclones have to shut this train off before it really gets rolling down the track because it's ten nothing now in favor of the Hawks in On a leg goes Troy Steiner wrestling at 142 against Robb Lot of Iowa State Troy Steiner, another brother act with a fourth full head of steam This Iowa line up he's so balanced that'd be awful hard to shut down right now and that's what Iowa State has in front of them.
A team with a full head of steam.
Steiner has lost big only once this year, covering only once in 21 matches with four falls.
And he's only a freshman.
These are both brother acts because, Shawn, what has been £118.
Rob watch brother four Iowa State what you see right where Steiner goes.
He's a good ledger.
He likes to put the legs in.
He likes to turn you from the top and you see right where his legs are controlling the opponent's body there.
Steiner's been very tough this year, Rob.
What?
His first year at his 16 and 14 and he's had a baptism of fire and some of these big meets Steiner confident goes around the bar.
It piling up riding time he has 52, 53, 54 seconds there He sticks the leg in, try to set up what he wants to do in Iowa against Iowa State on Iowa public television here from Carver Hawkeye Arena, the Hawks cyclones side, nothing major.
Steiner has his minute of riding time and it's still counting away right here.
Takes a lot of out of an opponent when you have somebody like Steiner on top of it, uses the legs, bars, you know, the head works on you.
It takes a lot out of you if you're somebody like Rob.
What what we saw at £118, both Zapp, ATL and Delmar.
Let's start it again, guys.
This capital and sponsor with freshman on, each man had trouble getting out here.
We have two freshmen again.
I think that's true of a lot of freshmen their week on the mat.
They have a tough time getting out right here.
We have an extremely talented writer in Steiner and a freshman underneath him.
And, you know, it's just it's just something the freshmen need to work on all the time is getting off the mat and getting away.
And Steiner had that leg in a quick hurry on the whistle.
That was a fast, fast move.
And again, he has what flattened out, leading two to nothing with 50 seconds left in the first period, he takes the bar, they can carry his weight.
Well, he's carrying his weight and he's flattened him out and control and arrested off.
Hard to get up when you don't have one leg, you don't have one arm to use to get up on one leg and one arm.
Let's go bar arm now on the far side by Steiner, he's going to try to tell them up.
Don't wait up for back point.
Brought him up on his hip.
Couldn't do it.
We have 16 seconds left to go in the period to come across.
STEINER But looking more and more as if the period is going to end, just like this one, he ran to do nothing in favor of.
STEINER And right and right at the end, there was a warning.
He defers to you.
I think our next meet's coming up on Tuesday at 9:00, Notre Dame in Nebraska, that's courtesy of Nebraska Public television.
And Nebraska is legitimately ranked up in the top four or five.
They have really got a solid they really have its balance and it's tough up and down the line.
And we were impressed by them at the national team championships.
They don't have any what you'd call international superstars yet in this lineup, but a lot of balance, really.
A lot of it score is two to nothing as we start the second period on the field.
So that was the choice.
Rob, What in the red for the cyclones, all but two of Iowa State's points so far in this meet have come on a skates and Iowa State has scored in every way practically except for back points No near-fall points.
Iowa, Iowa, Iowa.
Pick it up.
What against Steiner?
Well, he's flat.
What has an opportunity right here?
Steiner is flattened out.
But what?
Let him get back to his base now, if he can make anything up, he couldn't do it.
The Steiner got his knees under him.
He was back in shape again.
What wasn't able to take advantage of that.
And Steiner did do a nice job of getting back to his base to position he could work from to nothing in favor of Steiner at £142, they started the period on their feet, both trying to control the head work for the tie up, but they like to go there.
Not a lot of action.
Let's let's face it then.
This matter hasn't been much so far, but the third periods have been extremely kind to the Hawkeyes.
They've been active in the third period.
There's not nice crunch.
He's got the single.
But Steiner now has a lot of pressure on Watch Head is doing a good job of getting wide out of position right here, picks off the hand and now has his hand up the here and he scores Steiner took advantage on a counter, got one out of position, picked his hand came around for the two points impressive counter by Troy Steiner to take a lead four to nothing going into the third period here tosses it on could green get down right here This is the tail end right here you see Steiner pick off the hand right there.
Now he's going around controlling the head just with his chest, gets his hand up the crotch right there.
And a good quick move at the end.
He's up four to nothing.
Speaking a controlling hands.
Steiner just did a nice job right there of controlling the hand and getting out.
Once you control a hand, you're out.
He started the period underneath.
Jerk it out just where he wanted to be to start the third period.
And it's five, eight up, guys.
It was watch choice in the second period, trailing two to nothing to start on the feet.
It didn't work out to takedown.
So for Troy Steiner so far ten to nothing Iowa over Iowa State after three matches, here comes Steiner in on the left.
Now he's in on Lake.
He's improving his position.
He's come around, trapped one leg, got the single leg up, limp arms out to three key point And he is in major decision territory leading seven to nothing with a lot of riding time.
Well Troy Steiner did a nice job of deliberate deliberate progression which later got in.
Improved disposition came around for the two points.
It wasn't anything flashy, Dad.
He just got the job done.
What has been unable to get to his base, get to his base.
And when he was in the one single leg move that he got in on deeply, Steiner flattened him out, counted it and scored.
So it's been a frustrating match for Rob.
What you're at 101 53 start.
There's another goal point because what is called for stalling he was warned once before it's now a penalty at 830 28 seconds to go at 150.
We aren't sure yet who's going to wrestle for Iowa State.
It'll be there.
Randy called pat artery Jackson.
I think it's going to be Rick Colt that against Doug Stryker of the Hawks down We're running out of time here in the third period two points in the first period, two in the second so far, four in the third for Troy Steiner.
And with riding time, it's on major decision.
Well, he was able to control the match.
Quite inspiring and it's now more than happened after that nine to nothing win by Troy Snyder, 14 to nothing Iowa over Iowa State there are two, Steiner is what he's saying.
Another one of those.
STEINER Quite a bit as the years go by here, too.
They're both freshmen from North Dakota.
Now we go to 150 and one, and we do see Ryan in his first college wrestling meet on Iowa Public television, Randy Coleman at £150 for Iowa State against Doug Stryker, Rick got fit.
Rick Scott, but I'm sorry, Rick Colt, that of Eagle Grove.
Sorry to all my friends in Eagle Grove.
Looks like this will be interesting.
I, I talked to Rick back at the national teams and he said he was really getting itchy to get into that lineup.
And here we have him against Iowa.
It's a great way to break in.
Torrey Jackson's been around much of the year and striker has been the regular 150 pounder He's lost only three times in 20 matches for the Hawks ranked number eight in the country.
Colt bet on the red for Iowa State.
His team is down 14 to nothing.
There've been two major decisions out of the four wins for Iowa.
They're on the edge of the mat striker trying to make this move work without going out of bounds.
All right.
Switch to the double is not quite successful.
The referee thinks that's a dangerous position.
And stop it.
It's a little twist on Rick Colfax.
Mean, that's the Iowa State coaching staff gone in the first period.
Know we have a couple of Iowa high school products right here Rick Colt that out of Eagle Grove was the state champion and Doug Stryker had a strawberry Point star but a two time state champion.
And Doug, he had 99 pins in high school.
That's a that's a lot of sticks.
So we know he's dangerous to come on wrestle down on the edge that Stryker with a single leg bringing colt that, oh, it's a new rule and only happen to have the cozy ending thrown right there.
It's also closer to Colt that goes across the back.
It's not a takedown yet, says the official.
Pete will go back to the center Rick Colt fetters from the same hometown as the Iowa 158 pounder.
We'll see you later.
Mark Rylan Striker again and on the leg, call less a scramble position.
Right.
We'll see who's the best from the scramble position.
Well, the referee says it is potentially dangerous.
He stopped it and they're going to start over.
Too much danger stays in that situation.
The striker comes off the underhook less than a minute to go in the first period wants to throw.
Come on, register.
Doug Striker's the most improved wrestler from last year on the Hawkeye Squad.
He's improved his strength.
He's good on his feet.
There's a weakness, as he had when he came into the end of the program, Coach Gable said.
And he's really turned it around.
The striker has been the aggressor here, and Jim Gibbons just went out to tell Colt that to get in there and make a move, he's had to wrestle defensively here.
So far in the first two and a half minutes of the first period, the striker sets up with a two on one, got actually brought Colt back to the right.
We've got a tough two on one right there.
That's a tough, hard nosed competitor right here.
I think we're going to see a grill scrambling the last 10 seconds now, Colt that managed to get his legs where he wanted them momentarily to.
And there's the takedown.
And there you see striker boom lights in the fall right there.
He smelled it.
He wanted to go after it.
He George, right on top of it.
It's not the angle that the arm normally goes.
Let's see that the two on one just brought him right to the mat.
Then he cuts across behind the back right there for the two points.
Okay.
Hole immediately sets to try to set into a pinning combination.
But Pete George called it perpetual games with only a couple of seconds left to carry it.
Striker went right to the leg to keep Colt first in the last second getaways.
Well, those last second 3 seconds, though, have been the difference that we saw out of 118.
Carl Kevin Striker gets his choice kicks down and Colt comes on but when Zapiro got made the most use you can make of the last 4 seconds starting to get even possession you got a takedown to put going at £118.
Well exactly You can't measure what £118 does as far as spirit and mind the motion and the whole bit and you never know what would have happened if it would have been a draw that would have got Iowa State up to a different type of start Colt back in there.
But Striker managed to make a switch out just at the moment.
He hit the mat and now he's in position to reverse.
Can he get the reversal?
He did do reversal four to nothing.
Striker Hart's Leg.
Now he's out of bounds with a minute and 11 seconds to go in the second period.
It's been all Iowa so far on the scoreboard.
That's the first reversal we've seen in this meet and we'll see it.
Yeah, coca that's in a precarious situation right here.
He's trying to hang on And there you see Striker hooked the leg, pop his head out.
Now he's going to try to come around, cover the hips he does for two point reversal.
And as we go back to live action we're where we left off striker in the position of advantage riding he has knocking for a chance to erase any riding time advantage that colt that got where he likes to be in this position look at the near risk their control he has he covers the hips well he's a mat wrestler.
You can tell he likes to be where he's at.
He's looking for the fall.
He did get 99 pins in high school without being a good mat wrestler.
Sticks the legs and down.
They're working hard.
Poke bet on the bottom.
He just trails for nothing.
Neither one of you improving that's going that's referee Pete George talking to them.
We're at £150.
Dan Gable there is watching his Yeah.
Hold it, duck Striker go to work.
You know Coach Gable said right there he just said, work hard, Work hard.
You know, that's the whole key to this.
The intensity.
7 minutes, work hard.
And yet we haven't had any near Falls yet.
No, near Falls, which surprises me a little bit.
Here is Doug Stryker riding hard.
He's now 35 seconds riding time and counting as we come to the end of the second.
Stryker leads for nothing.
Easy now, Tough ride on top thanks to the confidence building in Stryker.
You know, not only in this match, but throughout the year, there's read Jake's new draw the Iowa bench Royce out here in the middle of the white shirt, gave a lot of wrestling fans thrills over the years.
They started on their feet.
Stryker came in on the leg.
He's in a position here where they hope he's going to have to watch himself for that Fourth, And there's no points because there's no control here.
But there will be very sharp takedown.
Now, in a scramble situation, Stryker comes out and leads six nothing.
Now he can get right in time points here because he's almost more than a minute now of advantage.
Oh, that's tough.
Ha!
Goal that arm out there.
He can't go too tough, says referee Pete George.
Yeah, You can't take a limb beyond the area that it naturally goes.
But you can try.
You can try to hold it.
Kevin Stryker comes on top with it, cuts off that switch, takes him into a tilt position.
Are we going to get Near-Fall points?
Yes, we are.
We are not entitled to.
There it is.
Three.
You know, Stryker has worked every you know, every possible position here to take it to his back to point feet with what's called a tilt there by trapping the arm and getting caught.
That's Matt back towards the mat.
It's a major decision territory.
Now.
We're in the last minute.
Stryker is really putting a crutch on Rick Colt that will go like that's potentially dangerous.
And Pete George stops at eight to nothing with riding time.
I have a large Iowa state, 14 to nothing Six up.
It's a six, right?
There's a near fall.
There's a tilt.
You see his arm is trapped right there.
Now all he has to do is tilt the back, pass 45 degrees and you see it done and then hold it for a couple of second couple of counts.
And he did it.
A reminder, the intermission will be showing you our college wrestling schedule, 235, six, 35 seconds to go to work.
I got let's see I strive for a pinning position by striker brought his man to his feet and wanted to throw him something of a souffle, almost without any amplitude.
13 seconds to go and do nothing.
I don't twist the striker with a bar.
Oh yes.
Brings this man back to Nearfall Let end.
Get it by getting a hammerlock and then coming under a hook and turning him.
And you know, that is again what Coach Gibbons is talking about, giving up points at the end.
You know, it's got to be exasperating.
You know, he's probably saying, you know, how how how often do I have to tell these guys, don't give it up at the end?
The 11 to nothing striker over Colt fan at the intermission after £150 it's Iowa 18 and Iowa State nothing from Carver Hawkeye Arena and Iowa City where there goes Dan Gable with his team take a short intermission.
Jim Gibbons is going to come back with probably his best wrestler, 158 pounder, Steve Hamilton, who, however, does have to wrestle a man who has beaten him in the past, Mark Rylance.
And that is going to be a tough match.
Well, certainly one not to miss that that match right there.
You bet.
Coming right up after we return at seven.
I'll be back in just a moment.
Wrestling coverage continues on your statewide home for sports.
Iowa Public Television.
I just feel that there is there is this core Iowa 18, Iowa State, nothing.
Halfway through the Iowa Iowa State, meet Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City on Iowa Public television.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
We still have five matches to go.
And it's not that Iowa State is behind that is so troubling to them.
I know as that they have I have really looked so, uh, so listless and getting this far.
I think they're exactly where they didn't want to be down with no victories after the first five matches.
Close but no cigar.
At 118, it all went downhill from there.
Well, you know, I was figuring out how many points were scored in one at one period or another.
And Iowa led in first period points 10 to 3, 6 to 2 in the second period, which generally has been the most inactive for either side.
But in the third period, all the five matches so far, Iowa State has been outscored 27 to 6.
And that's the story right there.
You turn that around, you got wins.
It all comes down to the third period.
And also there is the team score 18 to nothing total points.
The takedowns way ahead for Iowa 13 to 1 reversals they have the only one the near falls were for Iowa, two of them both scored by striker in that 155 matches, one of them on a tilt, the other one on a bar arm near fall, right near the end we have coming up on college wrestling some really big ones, as the Ed Sullivan used to say.
Next week, Notre Dame against a first rate Nebraska team.
What are Wisconsin and Iowa Iowa State and you and I good to see brings this team and then we call your attention especially to that one on February 11th, which we've just added to our schedule 5:00 in the afternoon from Stillwater, Oklahoma.
We'll bring you the Hawkeyes on the road against well, I guess you'd have to say now, probably the nation's number one team most definitely right now.
And that'll be a great rematch right there.
And I know they're gearing towards that meet.
We saw Oklahoma State and Iowa tangle in the national team tournament at Hampton, Virginia, and it was probably well, it was.
No, it was not.
Probably it was the best meat of that entire go.
And the Cowboys have terrific young wrestlers, terrific prospects.
That's what I saw.
It wasn't that Iowa the Hawkeyes wrestled badly because they wrestled pretty pretty well in most matches.
It was how tough the cowboys from Oklahoma State look to be.
Now, when we start here again, we're going to have a rematch of what has become a almost a legendary duo already, Hamilton and Riley.
In the meantime, let's give you a question to ask, to ask yourself.
This is our college wrestling quiz.
Iowa and Iowa State have combined between them for 17 NCAA titles and 13 NCAA runner up spots.
Now, how many times were they the top two in the same year?
How many times in history have Iowa and Iowa State been in the top two in the same year in the college wrestling tournament?
We'll give you the answer to that a little bit later on.
I can tell you that happened at least once, very recent years.
Well, there's Dan Gable bringing his team back up in the Carver Hawkeye Arena, University of Iowa, playing Michigan here at basketball.
Later on today.
So we're going to have some good sized crowds here.
The crowd today on a stormy day, 8500 in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
That's the Iowa team.
The match ups, the rest of the way include Hamilton and Rowland here at 58.
At 67, a rematch between Big and Matt Johnson.
They've each won one, so that should be a good 177.
I don't know who's going to wrestle there.
There are three men wrestle Wade in four Iowa and two for Iowa State could be interesting Brooks Simpson against Nelson at 190 and at heavyweight one of the best young heavyweights in some time, John Austin, Dark of the Hawkeyes will go against either Jamie Cutler or Todd Kinney for the cyclone.
There's Mark Rylance.
Well, this is big enough to go.
Yeah, it's a big match for both wrestlers because Mark Rylance sees himself as possibly the only one that might not be favored on the way out for the last five matches here.
And he doesn't want to be the odd man out.
So he has a special incentive at Carver Hawkeye and then put it in reverse for Hamilton.
And he's the only one favored.
He just definitely wants to come through for his team.
There's that Duck under.
That's the one that Rylan likes.
He got a nice move out of it, but Hamilton still in a hurry.
Up until now, Weiland got the leg.
And that's exactly what Dan Gable wanted.
Was that quick move against Hamilton?
Well, you hit it right there.
It's exactly what he wanted.
Use the crowd.
Go out there, be aggressive.
He got the body lock.
And Hamilton knew he was in trouble real fast.
You got to take it.
Almost got out of it, but not quite, because Ryan was able to throw in his legs and work on the back.
Rylan leads two to nothing.
I've said it before anybody.
It scores a two point score in this match with these two is is looking good.
One red, 2 to 1 as the Hamilton comes out now Dan Gable happy with that he wants to see three periods Russell from his man Steve Hamilton has his work cut out for him because he has to come from behind.
He's won against Rylance every time, but once in the last two years, right, he's had one tie and then he lost to him in the NCAA last year in a crucial match that year.
And again, he's in on the body clock for Rylan.
And I'll tell you, he's tough there.
And Steve Hamilton does not want to get in a power match with Mark Riley.
And right now, Ryan's got his way right there.
Hamilton is a straight ahead wrestler.
He's deliberate, he's got good bloke singles.
He does not want to get in a power match.
Well, if you remember last time last week when we showed you the national team championship match between these two in the third place meet Hamilton was making all the shots right there.
He was making almost all the moves.
And while it was defensive, being worked on the head quite a bit.
And here Ryan has been moving there like that.
Even if he doesn't reach, he makes Hamilton defend on the edge and out of bounds.
Rylan To Hamilton one There's Marble Island, the longtime coach at Eagle Grove and now an administrator at the school.
And proud but I'd say nervous fire.
See that come out as he certainly was a great coach who developed a great program and even drove minute, gone in the first minute to go in the first period.
Here it's Iowa 18 at Iowa State.
Nothing halfway through the first half at home do meet of the year.
There's again Ryan Levin on a counter by Hamilton based off nothing.
Well there's a good example of not wanting to be in a power match with Ryan because the power is on Rylan's side.
And right there the scramble of Steve Hamilton was able kept him into the match enough to get him out of that situation.
Rallied right here.
You're in five arena.
The injury looks like it was just something in the eye or something on the back of the neck.
He was complaining about a muscle fall or something up on his shoulder.
Oh, there it is.
Yeah.
They're working on the back of their Dan Gable for you.
You know what's interesting?
Has to be happy about the restart.
Well, what's interesting is, I think a question mark about Mark Rylance is is his mind always in the match?
His mind has to be in the match for him to be on in it.
And I don't think we have to worry about Steve Hamilton's mind being there because it always looks like it is.
But right now.
It looks like Ryan's right in in his mind right there.
Hamilton missed on a high crotch move.
Yeah, we're back again.
Even Ryan by one here near the end of the first period, right hand here, Hamilton was cut off on his spin.
Move around in second place, 2 to 1.
There's the team score.
Iowa had several major decisions in that first half.
Three, in fact, to go with two standard decisions for an 18 to nothing roll 2 to 1 Ireland at the end of the first period.
What do you want?
Ryan gets his choice that he'll definitely go under.
I'm sure Jake's down when he does.
Okay, get it Now, neither of these men have been able to hold the other in the past very well either.
Landry.
As you can see, Ryan's out right away.
Three, two, one.
Right hand.
Do it.
Right arm, right arm.
Work like that.
Work on it.
Put your hand up like that.
RYLANCE and Hamilton, come on for the bubble.
Let's go.
Right.
Are those instructions you're hearing are coming from Mark Johnson, who is an Iowa assistant coach, and he has a particular means.
He wants to have Ryan three down set up against Hamilton, take Hamilton's cut.
Move that right there.
How Hamilton lay on the leg and he needed to do that.
That's a big move for Steve Hamilton.
He needed to have a two point to match Ryan's 2.0.
This doesn't happen very often between these two.
This is a lot of scoring three, three, six points total for these two.
And there's got to be more.
Now Hamilton comes up.
Rylance is in a good position, however, to make a stand up move.
He does make it turns in and I'm sure Hamilton didn't want to keep you in position for very long.
Go back center, guys.
All right.
Now, 58 seconds.
Right.
And he needs to get out.
But Hamilton certainly would like to flatten him out riding for a while in on this single leg right here.
Keeps good position.
Now he's behind him and all he has to do is cover the hips, both legs, and fall on top for two points.
Cover him.
Hamilton covers his man.
Oh, back alive action both all American wrestlers right in fourth in the nation last year as a freshman Hamilton seventh in the nation last year as a freshman.
Outstanding competitors tight waist by Hamilton a roll by Ryan.
But Hamilton stayed behind.
Now turns into he's piling up right his time right here but Ryan has a tough walk behind on the arm.
And that's the kind of thing that Hamilton wants to do I'm sure to stay out of, get in that kind of power scramble because Ryan is dangerous.
He's known as a pinner from any position.
Three, three.
Okay, hold it.
37 seconds to go.
Second period.
Both of these young men went to state titles in high school, Ryland for Eagle Grove, Hamilton for Emmetsburg Hamilton trying to get back points that time.
He all right?
Yeah.
He's doing a nice job on top there and he's really looking.
He's got that intensity that his teammates haven't had.
And even at that, it took him a little bit of time to get off track because Rylan now here is Hamilton putting Rylan on his back.
Oh, with 10 seconds to go in the period.
Oh, wow.
That was real close to that.
As close to a fall for Steve Hamilton, a three point NEAR-FALL for Hamilton, and it's 6 to 3 at the end of the second period right here.
Look at this.
This is a power half here.
He's got position right here, goes chest to chest.
Look how he spreads with his legs.
But, you know, Hamilton looks like a young man who won't be denied.
And it's what Coach Gibbons would like to see the rest of his team.
You know, there's a good role model for him right there, Marv.
Right.
And looking on didn't like what he saw right there.
Rylan needs to be the one right now with the intense third period, he needs to do some scoring for Iowa and Hamilton started on the bottom goes into a roll comes up look at that repetition maybe they get a reversal He did and he's got to go from back points again points right here that roll.
He gets a lot of mileage out.
He has a cradle locked up.
But they're right on the edge.
Right on the edge as Hamilton works the cradle here, take a left to put this match turned around.
Well, the first minute.
Yeah.
And you notice that little roll Steve Hamilton has turned that roll the last two times in the two point reversal.
And at the time they went out, there were a minute and 23 seconds left to go.
In the third period.
Hamilton is complaining of a sore shoulder here.
That's the first time today, by the way, that an Iowa State wrestler is glad at the end of the second period, all of the roll.
But you see how Hamilton came back into the center of Rylan's body there at the hips and turn it into a two point move and it goes right into the cradle.
But he did not get the back point.
They're too close to the here comes again.
Here's a little roll.
He comes up, but he doesn't just lay there now it comes right back into the center.
And now he's got position there for the two points.
He counts on his quickness, position and a lot of flexibility.
And he leads 8 to 3 here.
He has riding time to rest.
Hamilton driving Rylan hard here.
The last two matches between these two have been low scoring by one, and this one was for a period.
But you are not on twisting you control.
That's Pete George the official warning.
Hamilton about the angle of the bar it's certainly a turn around as far as the colors and what's doing the reds out there with the hammerlock and the confidence out in front looking for the turn the blacks down on the mat right there.
That's what he wants.
He wants to try get a half Nelson with that bar arm up.
He can help it now tight race he will run.
But then what's interesting here is Mark Ryan is never out of a match with his dangerous throws.
His body and right now he wants to get in on the upper body.
Hamilton needs to stay away.
And Hamilton does not have a warning or does he know there's no warnings here and so he can afford it.
He does not want to get into a body type situation and it's 8 to 4.
Hamilton knows he has to wrestle a seven minute matchup already seeing what happened to one Iowa State wrestler tonight who was tied at £118, 1 to 1 with 4 seconds left and lost.
Well, right now, Hamilton knows where he's at, what he needs to do.
He got the high cross and he's got the takedown.
He got the takedown almost.
Yes, he did.
And then before he has to talk, hands out, Hamilton, call for locking hands.
You can't do that in that position is 10 to 5.
One second to go.
Hold it.
Cover him.
And there it is.
Even when your team is getting steamrollered, good wrestling wins.
Well, I'll tell you, he is certainly Steve Hamilton is certainly the bright spot on the cycling team.
He did win a lot of the Hawkeyes at Dunn earlier.
He showed intensity for 7 minutes.
He broke Mark Rylance.
He broke 18 to 3 as a star.
And now we have a rematch between two wrestlers.
I think that could turn in quite, quite an interesting match here.
Matt Johnson of Iowa State, a freshman Colorado against Webster City is Bart Charles, big of Iowa.
They met twice and they split in the national team tournament.
Johnson won the second one, Charles Big the first, but Charles Big was very strong.
At the end of each mat meet at the end of each match, Charles Big was the man taking Johnson down.
The second time ahead, Johnson was far enough ahead to stay ahead.
Nine right.
Talented freshman Johnson Talented Sophomore Barcelos Big nine on his head.
Charles in the black team score 18 to 3 in favor of the Hawkeyes here in Carver Hawkeye Arena.
We still have three matches after this one.
And that's it.
Don't worry so much about Charles Vick against Johnson.
Charles Vick wrestling from the outside, not from the tie up position.
Charles Big at an outstanding career of Webster City, a three time state champion.
He won the freestyle title in the USA Wrestling Junior Nationals Matt Johnson.
He was almost a three time state champion, only an injury as junior year kept him from winning three three titles, said he was rated the third best 155 pounder nationally by Amateur Wrestling News his senior year out of Colorado, Brighton, Colorado.
So, well, he's wrestling a 170 at 60 after having been at 77 most of the year.
Bobby Thompson of the Cyclones has been injured and he's kind of a day to day proposition with a bad knee all the way.
So Johnson has been down at 67 and obviously doing very well here.
There snapped down by Charles Vick, wasn't able to get advantage.
Johnson came back to his position very well.
We've used a minute and a half in the first period.
Gable Johnson on the Iowa bench.
He's levels match well they've seen each other a couple of times now head to head.
He's levels man.
They had a chance to be coached against each other.
They know what to expect going on here on the edge.
Russell Russell working guys keep wrestling back Barcelos made going back to the center.
Blake Johnson, the long single leg shot down low.
Oh, he was cut off.
They get the takedown.
Nice basic move.
Very cut off point of All right, heads up.
Basic move by Mat Johnson to two back to center to finish that off on a single so many times we got a wrestlers able to finish it off because he doesn't cut off right here in the single look as he comes through with his left arm.
And that kind of does a hook shot here, cuts off for two years to do nothing.
Johnson As in the earlier matches, Johnson gets the takedowns early.
Get him now right now get get it go by tells me well and Johnson likes to put in the legs he's got the legs he could be a little tired high right with the bar off right there he still up and Chelsea turns it in too.
Yeah.
And it's a reversal.
This was a little high.
Didn't look right where he was.
Actually, Johnson was lucky.
It was that part out about.
Look how high it is right now.
And he's.
He's trying to turn right there.
Shoulders are still in a hurry.
It's pretty close to everybody being out of bounds I don't know about.
But you can see that Charles big legs were still in and they called the two points 20 seconds to go in the first period, Johnson escapes, leads 3 to 2.
Johnson's shot in here was stopped by Chelsea.
Kind of a he just kind of hit them out and then went into a front headlock.
Well, these young men, I think, are going to be around for a while, too, and going to watch their progress in the next couple of years.
With the end of their first career.
Johnson leads 3 to 2 ladies.
That's right.
Chelsea aren't anxiously looking on saying, Come on, Bob GREENE takes down Johnson leading deferred.
Charles Vega takes down.
He can escape the tie Johnson has riding time 22 seconds worth and that's all I know.
But Chelsea comes out three and is able to get his hips out there, cut away 4 to 4 an escape.
This bruiser with a hip heist.
Three, three on the feet.
Each man has scored a two point move.
Johnson had a takedown almost, but Charles big reverse game in the first period.
Iowa 18.
Iowa State three was a shut out until Steve Hamilton dominated.
Mark Rylance at £158.
He'll pick that failed long slow single by Johnson but fail so it's locked up well.
Oh just do you know what he did Right.
There was a nice job of just straight ahead wrestling that he kept coming at both wrestlers to do that because I don't think there's a lot of difference between these two.
It's just good Straight ahead wrestler Berkovic pressure pressure little pick right there.
Straight ahead, wrestling two point takedown.
It is called toe to toe going at your man second heel pick there in 10 seconds in the second one worked break him down flat three behind you Nice job following through there following his man by Charles big break down.
Put it back down.
Johnson rolls, but he hasn't been able to face Chelsea Marks covered him pretty well in there.
Check it out.
Come on.
He can hold it there by the right arm.
Get tough on him.
Johnson underneath rolls again.
They look like they're now Chelsea.
Good, right?
Yeah.
He keep a lot of pressure on the top right there keeping Johnson from doing a lot of movement extra.
Now Johnson is a freshman, but he has been able to get out pretty well this year.
And Charles Big here is doing a fine job of riding him again.
Johnson rolls and goes on his back, Kels to cut him off in the middle and almost had him on his back, but not quite enough.
Well, now Johnson needs to bury his methods of trying to escape right here.
49 seconds the writing time at the end of the second period in favor of Charles Big Bacon Johnson will start.
I'm sure on the bottom because he feels he can get out right here.
He tries that little roll again, but Chelsea gets ready for it.
He sticks the half in, doesn't quite hold him for the needed four near-fall points.
Matt Johnson is down again.
Like I said, he needs to get one somehow, someway.
Okay, there's the sit.
Now he's got to come back to something else that was bad.
I didn't.
Well, and he is in a position here maybe to pick up a right time advantage.
It just crossed him a that's something that didn't happen in the first two matches.
Neither man wrote the other particularly well.
But here Charles Vick has taken Johnson Johnson through the last minute or so of the second period and so far behind, about a half a minute of the third, they are Johnson Johnson to get to work on the feet right there.
He's got to go toe to toe.
He's got to go straight at his man right there and get that momentum out of the hand of Charles may get wants to get back to this man.
As we said in the last two matches, no matter who was ahead.
And it was Johnson in those other matches, Charles big dominated the last minute.
You're well, Johnson has to turn to Johnson has to turn it around right here.
He you know, he's in the mat.
He's for all practical purposes he's behind by two points with that right in time.
But he can erase that if he take him down the next 20, 30 seconds.
Charles Big leading by 157 seconds to go a take go by Johnson here and a right out would actually win it for him so Iowa State can still win this match if mat would take Kels back down and write him out.
But Johnson looks tired.
Chelsea try to keep his feet in the game.
Control no point.
No point in that game.
Could you believe it?
38 seconds to go inside.
Trip catches the leg and a referee didn't call it a takedown.
And again, Charles Big, the aggressor, goes out of bounds.
There's no warning against Johnson.
And the same thing is happening here that happened in the previous two meetings between the is Charles big is dominating the last minute.
Well now if Matt Johnson takes him down, the best he can do is tie because Chelsea definitely has the right time points Charles big with a underhook and he'll pick and a takedown it just kept coming after he kept doing it the Iowa wrestler wins it here in the last two and a half or the last period and a half.
Good.
He came from behind and just kills big family.
They're going going crazy out.
4 seconds to go, leading 7 to 4 with riding time and Charles big wins the rubber match 724824 win Roddick time Oh for and at the end of £167 for seven weight classes.
Iowa leads Iowa State 21 to 3 18123 in favor of the hawks.
Now we're going to go out to £177.
I thought maybe that Iowa State might wait to see who Iowa put out and then send out its man.
But instead, we see Brad come out of Iowa State on the map.
This is the first time we've seen him in a college wrestling telecast.
Well, he was one of the top freshmen a couple of years after high school product coming out of Texas.
And not very many top high school products come out of Texas.
High school valedictorian in his class, a class of 512, number one in his class academically, he's wrestling at 177 against.
Don Finch of Brett, Iowa.
First time we've seen him this year, although he's a veteran for Iowa State.
Brad Canals gets in, get him off, you know, and gets the takedown, finishes.
Really, he's real flexible and snaky there on the bottom and he is never out of it when he's even in a position like this.
But Brad, Canals needs to know.
He says, hey, here, I'm going to take advantage of this situation.
Now, Finch decides he does have to do something a little bit different.
He turns away, goes to his base, try to escape.
Brad Canal leads to another.
That's canal coverage.
Top man is take down Finch really was maybe trying to do a little inside trip or something.
Yeah, sure And canals just had pretty good position was able to stay in that position for two points so canals got the leg in for a while.
He's he's still maintaining control here with about 37 seconds of riding time and building young, talented wrestlers here.
Finch, a two time state champion out of Brit.
He's only a sophomore on the Iowa lineup.
And on top right now, Brad Canal is a three time state champion out of Irving, Texas.
McArthur High School.
Iowa State really got a top recruit when they got Brad Canals, but we really haven't had an opportunity to see him wrestle and see what he can do Now, Finch caught the hand.
He comes around for this game and he captured canals his head under there.
He was able to man up, post it, make a move out, get away.
It's not 2 to 1 in favor of canals, canals and on the leg.
His team trails 21 to 3.
Steve Hamilton was the only winner so far.
No takedown yet.
Good offense working across the back canals has the single leg and finch fences trying to work a bar on a pipe.
Here comes canals around added just to stay with him.
Just oh, down there.
Bring it back down, man.
Stalemate right now.
No takedown.
It's 2 to 1 in favor of canals.
It has been very active here in the first part of this match.
But at 177 and Carver, Hawk-Eye Arena, Iowa Public Television College Wrestling Series with Tim Johnson.
I'm Doug Brown.
Again, the single leg right there.
You throw Hanson skills a bit.
He had good shot to now set a good shot and nobody's turned it into anything yet.
It'll be interesting, but I was in good shape.
He has got his back too.
He's got boards right there.
This is the one He has been on his back float after the right after the takedown.
Time is running out in the first period due to the impressive debut here by Brad Canals.
Well, I think the impressive part is that he does he appear to enjoy that?
No good position.
Compete.
Good position right here.
One pitch comes down, he sits right on his hips and look analysis, writing on that leg, taking the position away from Finch and is able to put him into a lot of trouble right there because he knew where he was at play.
Okay, hold it.
So cover him.
He got to the first period of a three period match, 7 to 1 in favor of Brad canals against Johnson.
Let the guy up and canal turns.
And after at one point red, I think we're adrenaline starting to boil here in Brad canals he feels and he wants to get after it.
But I'll tell you what, Finch is dangerous coming back.
And so, you know, he's got good defensive skills and but so far, canals has taken it, taking him away from Finch.
TANNER Well, so far, there's no doubt about it.
Jim Gibbons seems to have picked the right man out of the people that weighed in today.
This is freshman Brad Canal.
So £177 for the Cyclones, leading 8 to 1 with riding time 30 seconds into the second.
But there's a long way to go and I think Don Finch from Grit, Iowa, another great wrestling town, those small towns in Iowa that produce year after year outstanding teams.
And then every once in a while, a super kids that really make it big in the college root canals on a double leg or you wonder where shape is going to come in here.
We're seeing Finch for the first time back and you're seeing canals for the first time and you just don't know what the conditioning factories.
And it certainly could be in one of these two races, possibly both.
But Kansas, again, reaches the legs.
And, you know, for being a scrambler like Finch, he is has been successful canals has been winning this game.
Yes, has.
And he looks like he's likely to win this one, too.
Well, he cut off nice again and knows where he's at.
C he's got a headlock he's trying to get ahead on.
He has been helping him out here, almost allowing him through.
He took Randall right there for the two points.
So Finch won that scramble that's up and goes in hard and he's good on the legs.
He's tough on top with the legs right here.
He gets to go to work where he likes to be.
You know, in this position earlier, when canals had the situation.
Let's go back to center man.
Finch was able to get like that, get right, get the head hit hard and come out of that situation.
It didn't happen.
It was very Davis Jim Zaleski on the right, your screen.
It's good to see Jim's face back in the lineup as coaches.
He's been at Minnesota for a few years and he's back here as a recruiting coordinator.
And sure, he and his wife and family are happy to be back and back home again.
So there was a little time left in the second period.
Canals.
The man on the bottom, Iowa State, leads eight three.
He doesn't have riding time anymore because Finch has cut it down to 42.
41 is ticking the other way.
We're going to answer the college quiz, by the way, PJ, you're out of here.
It's 8 to 3 in favor of canals at the end of the second period.
How many times have Iowa and Iowa State finished as the top two?
Whatever order in the same year in the NCAA tournament?
And there's your answer Five times 1987, 82, 79, 78, 76.
Quite a few.
Quite a few.
What a heritage.
Now we go to the third period it out.
Finch starts on the bottom, trailing by five.
Kansas had two takedowns in a big near-fall in the first period Canal scrambled for a takedown in the second period.
Well, here comes that third period.
Here's what's going to be told right here.
And I think this is as good a match to watch and see what happens as any, because this is a real important, pivotal match for canals.
His debut for Iowa State.
We'll see where finishes and conditions in both wrestling.
Both of that matter warn you, be both, maybe a little tired, possibly be.
That's Don Finch.
Pat Kelly's been in there the last few minutes for actually for much of the first half of the season so far.
Four for Iowa That way they also wade in Keith travel.
But Finch is in the lineup here at 177 against Brad Canals and canals with a big first period.
Come on Mike good first rate opening show leads 8 to 3 a minute, ten to go.
That's his best canals is now back in the scrambles as well.
That's great.
You really need to put himself there so they'll start over.
Yeah, there's Brooke Simpson.
He'll be at £190 for Iowa.
We back down in a rematch against Jim Nelson.
They met twice in the national team championship last week, and Simpson won both 52 seconds to go.
Iowa, 21, Iowa State three.
Steve Hamilton beat Mark Wright.
And that's the only victory so far for the second position.
But Brad Canals has been doing the job so far here with about 52 to go.
Okay, hold it sets up gonna be a long 52 seconds.
Finch captured the head for a second but gets behind, stays right in there with that spiral.
Well, he needs to keep the pressure on to stay behind the arms at the same time.
Right here.
He needs to know where he's at.
Goes to the legs right back in a scramble.
Now, here's where Kansas has done a pretty good job of cutting across.
Now come in.
Now.
He needs to get to his base or he's going to get in trouble.
Nelson needs to come up right here.
Now.
He's Got trouble right now.
Put it away.
It's 8 to 4.
After this game, I need to throw 50 to throw.
Kansas needs to keep the good position that he has most of the match 14 seconds to go right in time.
Yes, Kansas has riding time so he leads by five back in.
Let him in red and win.
So it's a good day for you.
Mike Nelson, for example.
It was also a debut by the guys.
They may be seeing each other again.
Good win for Iowa State Brad Canals Ryan 9 to 4 for Canal 21 to 6 for Iowa with two matches to go Brad canals by district and all the to the scores are quite even in the first period now as a result of all canals good there he was ahead 7 to 1 in the first period Iowa leads Iowa state in first period points 15 to 40 second 12 to 8.
But in the third period, it's been Iowa.
They've scored 33 points to 12 in the last 2 minutes.
So like we said, you know, there's just a little bit too little too late when you have a balanced lineup like this.
That's why Iowa State needs to get out faster at first and get the time to performance that they've gotten from Hamilton and Kansas earlier in the meet from some of their other wrestlers.
Then you never know what can happen.
Then the adrenaline gets going and the momentum gets going.
And I'm sure that's what Coach Gibbons will be working on in the next several weeks.
£180 now between Jim Nelson of the Cyclones, Brooks Simpson of the Hawks Jim Nelson, coached by the man you were just looking at, Jim Gibbons.
Nelson, who started as a walk on, worked hard, wrestled some matches at 177 this year, stepped into 190.
It's weight.
It's his position.
Brooks Simpson has a lot of talent right now, ranked up in the top four in the country.
Hey, Hey.
Rick Russell, a diver, not so far.
Even a national title.
The most exciting win he probably has ever had was that ten of that number one ranked Eric Walker of Iowa State here a couple of years ago that so many people were stunned by on both sides.
There's Mark Johnson, assistant coach for a long time and had a great career at Michigan, a great career internationally.
And I'm sure that's why Brooks Simpson has learned and improved as much as he has, because he has to go with Mark in the wrestling ring.
All right, great.
We've used a minute elbow in the first period.
We can say that, Jimmy, these two wrestlers know each other pretty well, too.
Go.
And they have been very close in the past in their matches.
Again, up until the last period.
And then Simpson has pulled away a little bit now has won in both wrestlers.
George says we're not going to have it this time.
There's Brooks Simpson's daddy's postures down there.
He's kind of saying, okay, Brooks, come on, don't make me get nervous.
Just get in there and do it.
And they did.
He did.
He went right at Nelson with a single leg and got it.
Turn it up.
It Simpson in the riding period riding position with one minute to go in first period Iowa, 21 Iowa State six and a half we'll have Georgia.
The winners for the cyclones have been Hamilton and Brad Canals, who stepped in at 177 against Don Fisher.
Even when he did a good job, he was able to turn it, get the one point escape there.
It's 2 to 1.
Very important for Nelson here to get right back in and initiate a takedown attem Pick, get up at the edge of the mat here.
Right to it.
Remember to on February 11th, we have a match that has been added to the schedule.
It's Iowa against Oklahoma State.
I'm sure the next time the rankings come out that the Cowboys will be ranked number one.
They were one and two, Arizona one way or the others throughout the early part of the year.
Go to John and those two teams, Iowa and Oklahoma State match up very well.
Here's Simpson and on the single leg again and he gets the underhook and that's right where he likes to be.
But a good power reserve is not quite enough.
But Nelson at the end of the period doesn't he got the takedown making it 4 to 1.
Well, Nelson just got beat right here on this single leg.
Simpson was able to get in from the outside, didn't even use an underhook like he likes to set it up.
Then he got the underhook with that single and was able to execute.
Here it is right here.
This is the takedown right here.
Second, take it.
Come in three right there.
If the bell had and it sounded, there could have been big trouble for Nelson in that scramble, Nelson had his choice trailing 4 to 1.
He took down took the down position, two minute second period at £190.
It's Simpson from Newton.
Let's see Nelson out of prison has been able to initiate the takedowns here and Nelson needs to stop those attempts by Simpson and create his own offense right here.
Working, working.
Let's go.
Let's go again.
A high crotch move by Simpson cut off.
Well, slow this time is the Iowa State Group Joe Gibbons on the left.
Let's Anderson in the middle.
Head coach Jim Gibbons on the right.
Iowa and Iowa State, which started all Hawkeyes tonight after a first match which could have gone either way and was settled on a takedown in the last second that broke a one, two, one tie between the capital and sponsor Zap.
And it's got Iowa out three to nothing and it will soon roll up all the way to eight teams backing before the Cyclones got back on the board.
There you go.
There it is.
It's not 21 to 6.
Oh, less than a minute to go.
Now, Nelson hasn't been able to get anything set up the way he wants it to go, and he doesn't want to make a move until he gets himself set up.
And that means that he's vulnerable to being called for stalling.
And he just was.
There's one of Gable's girls.
His wife, Kathy Gable, never misses a match.
5 to 2.
Simpson.
He's kept Nelson out of his game really well so far.
Strong, so easy on that underhook right there.
And that's what Nelson has to keep him doing, because there he gets in on the single because he set it up with the double with the Underhook close for the two points right there needs to keep Simpson out of that under the three shot Brooks Simpson leading five two with 20 seconds to go in the second period now right there you got him down he got Nelson was able to get Simpson out of position just for a second.
Had his head down right there is where he needed to take advantage of it with a front headlock, spin around, something like that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Hey, bunt heads or Nelson got poked, but I heard the officials say he got poked in the eye.
So here's the injury.
Time out.
Clock is right for Nelson.
I love this party and the union follows.
Let's take a look at this shot right there is where he needs to take advantage.
But he came back in and I don't know where he got both.
Somewhere in there.
Up next week, college wrestling features Notre Dame ranked 13th and number four powerhouse Nebraska.
On Tuesday at 9:00, a couple of teams from outside the state, Nebraska really is a fine team this year or you haven't seen them yet.
I think you'll be impressed.
The coverage will be provided by public television and announcers Bill Dorman and Jeff Culprit.
I'll bring you the action that's on Tuesday night and our regular college wrestling spot at 9:00.
Notre Dame versus Nebraska and takedowns in this Iowa Iowa State meet.
Now Iowa has 19 and Iowa State has six near Falls or even two two and reversals 2 to 1 in favor of Iowa.
Those are the rankings of the teams around the country.
The last time out, Oklahoma State will be on time next time, I'm sure we're back at it again at £180.
Brooks Simpson leads Jim Nelson of Iowa State 5 to 2 and Iowa leads Iowa State.
The team score 21 to 6 second period as history.
That's Todd Kerry, day one of the Iowa State heavyweights.
Johnny Cutler is the other.
And I think that's fitting it.
I think that Kenny will be wrestling against John Austin Dawkins.
Nelson starts on top.
But look at this.
Simpson is able to get his arm through there and come out pretty easily for a point escape and then comes riding on the outside looking to get that other leg and stay on right there just like that.
He has his toes in that.
But Nelson still has got to take down a whizzer there, but not enough to beat go single inspection.
He signaled two points, 8 to 2.
Right.
And time is 40 seconds for Simpson.
Okay.
Yeah, it.
Hey.
Okay, hold it.
Him and Simpson has been able to score in the third period a good deal against Nelson in their previous two moves cut off the first move.
Now he moves up the body to try to break Nelson flat and go.
Nelson rolls, get out there with that let's go to the Simpson's working hard trying to get the Half Nelson in there trying to find a way to turn Nelson to his back not quite getting out even for the takedown.
He lets Nelson go because he wants to pile up some points and get a major decision here.
It's 8 to 3 with riding time 9 to 3, all he needs is takedown rides out and he has a high crotch move again by the clock double to take takedown and its ten three down here now he's trying to get back to the 33 with that prospect he's getting near four points here.
Oh he has a three point NEAR-FALL Let's see.
This is where that third period comes in right there with Simpson.
He's done the job in knowing where he's at, saying, I want more than a regular decision.
That's what it turned into.
You can see the clock ticking away.
Simpson with a 13 to 3 lead in this nearfall position.
That's how it's going to end.
And a big win for Brooks.
Yep.
Down with riding time, 2 minutes of riding time.
It's 14 to 3.
A major decision for Brooks Simpson over Jim Nelson.
So it's 25 to 6.
Iowa over Iowa State, an impressive performance there by Brooks Simpson and impressive performance made it 25 to 6.
And now we're coming on to the heavyweight match and there's a staff reaction right there.
And that big move that Simpson's dad reaction at heavyweight it's going to be Jonathan Dark for the Hawkeyes was one of the most impressive young heavyweights in the country.
And for the first time, he is in college wrestling meet.
This year, we see Todd Killian wrestling for Iowa State Jayme Cutler wrestle Austin dark in the two national team Championship duals.
And in the second one, Cutler had a neck injury that forced him to default almost as soon as the match started.
Well, I am impressed with just the looks of Austin Dork.
I mean, he's a good looking heavyweight and Slim and Strong and he can move.
We'll see.
First time we've seen Kenny.
Well, he's got one of their here in the back and this is all standup.
He's off right here in the first minute.
Got the crowd on its feet 3.405 to nothing impressive heavyweight Austin Dark 25 to 6.
The Hawkeyes lead cyclones after nine weight and Oates.
The darker hometown is Nichols, Iowa.
He wrestled at West Liberty.
You Todd Kenny out of DeWitt, Iowa.
He was a state runner up in 1988.
Only a freshman back to the center with about a minute 44 to go in the first period.
Todd Kinney in high school also won a state discus title.
So he is a track man and a wrestler and.
Yeah, yeah.
Well, Austin Garp has the capacity to make the home crowd.
Who are you?
And oh, as they say, they call him Big O Driver.
Kenny manages to get to his feet from here.
Austin autograph one stand up in a slightly different position there.
He had a feeling about what was going on behind it.
5 to 1 he was conducting on the leg, like the ocean door was 31 and no his senior year, with 29 pins on his way to the state title at West Liberty, he allowed just one point that was a penalty point at the state meet well, recruit.
The two guys that lost to him didn't get pinned.
He was recruited by several Division one schools for football.
He was a dynamite football player, a top recruit, and he chose the sport of wrestling.
And we're the better for it as wrestling fans were.
By Austin Darby Austin Dark leads 5 to 1 got see Royce Alger on the right there's Jim Gibbons the Iowa state coach watching his heavyweight Todd Kenny go out against John Austin.
Dark room car.
Come on, move it.
We're almost at the end of the first period.
There's that duck out here again for a nice eight out score most of all.
Well, you see what I mean about being able to move Now, it's not a heavyweight move right there.
The defender up with you see it.
You know, we saw Chris Burns from Oklahoma State do a little clinic with this new neutral right here.
Here comes Kenny.
Pressured in and that was the finish right there of Austin Daubs duck under his heavyweight ducking hold They start in the up position.
I didn't see whose choice but Austin Dorp again ducks under this time.
Kenny was not there when Austin Dorp arrived, which is the way when you're on defense, you'd prefer to have it go, Oh, look, I'm on it was Austin Darby's choice.
He prefers to make something happen from the feet.
You'd like to get a throw 7 to 1 in favor of Austin Darby.
It's 25 to 6.
There's a double leg.
Try up.
I know he would have liked to win in the middle of the mat for that one double leg.
Work up into a body lock.
They are trapped.
You would love to have in the middle a minute gone dead.
Good.
Second period.
Let's go.
Iowa State has won two matches of nine so far.
Kenny really has pretty good position.
He's been able to stay in there, you know, better than a lot of heavyweights can win open door good low single but that was again low single double body knocks So far we've seen a clinic put on takedowns by the heavyweight from Iowa.
He's very quick.
He just looks athletic.
What do you figure the weight difference is here?
His head?
Well, it's ironic, I guess.
I never thought he was a heavyweight.
£55, I think Kenny, I believe, weighed in, was somewhere just over 271.
He had one warning against Kenny on the bottom for inactive.
Watch it, fellows.
They right in front of us.
Go right to them, to the bare bones in the basketball court.
No one.
Yeah.
Ran one point.
I'm sorry.
One escape and escape.
Both up guys for Kenny makes it nine two.
We have 8 seconds to go in the second period.
Most adorable Takes a peek over Kenny's left right shoulder of the clock.
Sees that he is not going to really be able to do much at the end of this period.
So he down goes to the basket.
Kenny gets his choice, decides to take down trailing 9 to 2 right.
Austin DA has riding time even one round pretty well locked up by the three from the feet again where Austin Dauphin successful in three takedown shots he had two in the period one in the second he's in on a double leg and this time he got caught under you know Kenny was able to use his weight real well.
That's what I'm saying earlier about his position.
He knows what good position is.
And right there, when it was the door post door came in and got a little flat out, he was able to put the pressure on top of his head, spin around for two.
So Kenny gets a chance to work from the top o clock for Jesse while he the ankle.
Iowa leads Iowa State 25 to 6, the largest margin of victory that Iowa ever had against the cyclones in Iowa City was a 1981 21 points 27 six loss to Dorp wins here it would be greater defense and here's a warning against Austin dog and Courtney Cod.
Kenny needs to get behind the arm right there and he wasn't quite able to do it.
He looked like he dropped out 10 to 5.
But right here, he can anticipate low shots by Ocean Dorp right here.
And if he uses his his weight and his hips right there, he can get that around again.
And that's what he needs is points Kenny from Iowa State Austin DA leads 10 to 5.
He has riding time even after Kenny stayed on top for a good little while here in the second period.
In third period, Austin Dorp led 7 to 1 after the first period because he got a takedown right to a near fall almost immediately.
And that Oh my God, and Austin.
But in the match, ever since, Kenny has been market.
Kenny Yeah, it's not very well 4 to 3 since the first period is Kenny favorite right here And Kenny look, you know, let's have a fresh second.
He's impressed me right here with keeping good position.
Seconds Go ahead, do it.
So get out and it's going to end right here with riding time for the match goes to Austin.
Gone by a score of 11 to 5 over Todd Kenny of Iowa State.
Well, there's no doubt about that.
Austin, your is a spinal looking heavyweight specimen wise, talent wise is in the nation right now.
I don't know whether experience wise yet he's there, but I don't know what he's got ahead of him.
And the team is good on the line to shake hands with each other.
Wrestlers all wrestling with each other.
Coaches.
Iowa has defeated Iowa State 28 to 6.
Let me tell you very quickly how it happened.
The wins for Iowa were at 118 on a major.
It was not a major decision, but it was a big victory because up until got a takedown with a score of 1 to 1 and 4 seconds left over, cosponsor Terry Branch had a major decision over to call Tom Brandes beat down night 13 seven.
Troy Steiner had a major decision over Rob White nine to nothing.
It got to be 18 to nothing when Dutch striker beat recalled that 811 to nothing and then the Cyclones got on the board with Steve Hamilton.
He started out behind because Rylan took him down.
But Hamilton then had one of the best matches I've ever seen him have against Ireland.
Actually, it has to be the best match.
He beat him 11 to 5 at 167 Mark Charles Big was impressive against Matt Johnson winning 8 to 4 that the Cyclones got another win from a first timer Brad canals out against Don Finch and canals with a big first period, a couple of takedowns and a near-fall one 9 to 4.
Then Brooke Simpson beat Jim Nelson a major decision, 14 to 3 and Olson Dark won a heavyweight, 11 to 5.
So there we are, 28 to 6 with Iowa State down by 22.
At the end, they have the greatest margin of victory that Iowa has ever had in Iowa City, anywhere.
Well, as in the open field house as well as here Barber Hawkeye Arena.
Well, I think you're a bright spot for both teams, but obviously more bright spot for Iowa.
Yes, they Got out much better at the beginning.
They were much stronger in the lower way.
They had a lot more prior things.
But it was a good second half for the cycle was better.
It was better.
And you got to look at how you did, you know, just recently and recently.
Now is the second half of this mate for Jim Gibbons and he's a doozy as a coach.
That'll take the positive back and put it into the wrestling room.
I want to remind you to, before we get away about that Iowa Oklahoma State meet, we'll be bringing you from Stillwater in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Sunday, the 11th of February.
