It was January nine, 1981, when the Iowa Hawkeyes of the Iowa State Cyclones met at Ames in a battle between the nation's top two wrestling squads.
I was struck first as Mike.
He beat Iowa's Barry Davis down at £134.
Iowa's national champion Randy Lewis suffered a dislocated elbow.
The injury gave ASU six points and temporarily put Iowa in shock.
But the Hawks came back as Iowa's Mike Deanna beat issues.
Perry Hummel and Ed Bannock defeated Dave Allen.
It came down to the heavyweight match.
The Cyclones led by five, but a superior decision by Iowa's Lou Paddick would tie it up.
PIN would win it for the Hawks with a nine to nothing lead panicked gut turned and issues.
Dave Hosenball got a come from behind pin.
Iowa State's win was their first over Iowa since 1978.
Tonight the cyclones are one speaks and take their number three rating against the nation's once again top ranked team, the Iowa Hawkeyes.
As college wrestling's top rivalry is upon us again, it's Iowa State versus Iowa.
From the Iowa Fieldhouse in Iowa City, Iowa, IPB in Presents College Wrestling.
It's the Iowa State Cyclones versus the Iowa Hawkeyes.
The college wrestling rankings are out, and it should come as no surprise to see the Iowa Hawkeyes after demolishing Oklahoma 3213 as the nation's new number one team.
Good evening, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown.
And I'm Dave Hardy.
And here we are again for the 13th, the lucky 13th, I guess, in our IPN College wrestling series.
We're live from the Iowa Fieldhouse and it's this big rematch.
We started out with Iowa and Iowa State and here we are again.
Yes, we are dug and this should be a super rematch.
You know, this is the this is the rubber match of way between these two teams.
They're now 12 and 12.
That's right.
12, 12.
And two ties.
Well, you know, we have had such great meets over the years and we talk about that first one.
We could talk about that forever, I guess.
Couldn't wait.
Oh, I guess we we could.
And I'm sure there are a lot of them that will be doing that.
And, you know, Iowa has been peaking this year.
They have after that, Iowa state laws come back extremely well.
Iowa State just lost Oklahoma.
They've had a few flu problems and that's the only loss on the record, however.
But we know that in this meet you always expect the unexpected.
Whatever you think is going to happen is not quite what's going to happen.
Perhaps here is a face we're going to show you that you might not have expected to see.
There it is.
Randy Lewis, you saw him hurt in that first match.
He weighed in today.
He weighed in, my friends, at £134.
We don't know whether he's going to wrestle or not.
It might just be a psychological thing.
We could pick out any one of all the matches to show you as highlights.
But tonight we're going to show you 342, 150 and 167.
There is Dave Brown of Iowa State at 142.
Yeah, it's currently ranked third in the country at his weight class and the great technician, single leg specialist he could take down man.
And he won that first one.
The first boy we're going to show you in each of these weights won the last match.
Here is Lenny Zaleski of Iowa, who is now ranked at the top.
That's correct.
Rank number one at 142 super record.
He beat Andre Metzger.
And that's something Dave Brown couldn't do.
Here is the number one man at £150.
He's from Iowa State.
His name is Nate Carr.
Oh, Guy, strong, quick.
Whatever you want to say about him.
He's got a number one in the country.
The only question is, can he beat Scott Trevino, who is in there at Iowa?
He's number two in the rankings right now.
And at £167, another great one for Iowa State Perry Hummel ranked number two.
Yes, one more, West Des Moines and Dowling Prep, and he's a good one.
And his opponent is Mike, Deanna, number one.
And he won that first match in Ames.
It's college right up with wrestling's greatest rivalry.
And we're going to be back for the start of this Iowa Iowa State meet in just a moment.
I want you did you know that there's a man in Iowa whose job is to serve as the state's professional bargain hunter?

Senior King Miller £167.

A sophomore with a 21 and one record.

Mike, Deanna £177, Another matchup of one and two wrestlers for Iowa State.
A senior with a 24 and one record ranked number two.
Dave Allen for the Hawkeyes.
A sophomore with a 26 and one record ranked number one in the nation at the Haas, Manek, £190 for Iowa State.
He's a senior with a 25, six and two record.
John Forsey for the Hawkeyes, a sophomore with a 24 five and one record to beat Bush.
Brian State, one of two wrestlers.
It will either be a senior with an 813 record.
Dave Hosenball, or a junior with a five and two record.
Brian Neal for the Hawkeyes.
A sophomore with a 17 and four record low batting.
And they're some of the crowd here, 12,750, as the official is the official estimate of 12,750 people.
Think of all the players and now our national anthem and by the dawn's watching.
Oh, we highlights last one stars 3100 for us we watched and screen and the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting Great night Last night was still the night 301303.
And there are no preliminaries left except to tell you that you're looking right now at John Raber of Dahlonega, Georgia, by way of Pennsylvania.
He is the referee tonight.
And he will be wearing a microphone so that you'll be able to hear what's going on.
You know, he was the referee in that first meet.
And as a matter of fact, the two deal and I make a contract with this referee for both matches.
That's correct.
Great.
Now we're getting the public going out there after the introductions are going to make when you've got your choice of arena.
And you can bet even though they can't, then what they're flipping for is they choice at the beginning of the second period in or even bouts.
And Alan says we'll start on the either there's Randy Lewis.
I guess everybody's interested to see if he'll wrestle, even if he doesn't.
That's a terrific psychological job for the Hawkeye crowd.
23 There it is.
The records for the season.
The series is tied 12 wins apiece over the years.
And that first one well record, I don't know if a lot of the people who were there ever saw anything more exciting than that.
And these are where these teams have finished in the NCAA tournament over the last five years, Iowa four championships out of five.
And the other one was Iowa State.
And the Cyclones have finished up in the top two or three all the time.
This is over a period of 20 years before that.
And you see Iowa State was on the top of the world then.
They sure were.
That's the map and the Iowa field house, and that is Barry Davis, who has had a wonderful year as a freshman here coming out of Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids, where he was a three time state champion.
He's only lost four times.
One of the losses was to Mike Perkasie, the man he's going to wrestle right now.
And this as so many times, Dave, has terrific bearing on the meet because there have been upsets in the first match at Iowa and Iowa State, Gary Harris there is because he wears a red uniform on and Barry Davis has the black on the right, the light uniform, if you're watching a black and white set will be the Iowa state and the dark will be the Iowa.
Okay, here we go.
And away we go.
Momentum is a big thing in this duel tonight, Doug, as you indicated, their first four or five weight classes, always the unexpected, as we said.
And it's important to know what Davis has to do.
He has to go get because a lot of takedowns, because because he is very strong, physically strong as we said, and likes to he likes to use that power.
But he ended up on his own back and Davis has him in trouble for it.
Maybe a five point move, it looks like maybe a five point move out of a Doug.
That's what we saw in the unexpected.
And it happened immediately.
There's a51 score right now.
Davis leading caught him tough there for a five pointer He's in underneath on the other hooks again now that's because his position but Davis takes it right to him when that something breaks in there.
It's now 5 to 1.
A lot of wrestling left in this particular match here comes back Jose down for a Kelly carry move No point yet scored he's behind but he's not to the mat got to take him to the mat beyond normal reaction time he outside out at about well we're going to look at here comes our move right now you notice because coaches in there kind of locked in with him he's got that here that comes with a trip with it but countermove on behalf of Davis for the five pointer he had good balance very nice balance and odds 5 to 140 seconds left in this the first period Score five one again Davis winning in that underhook position.
All this first match is always so big work center here.
The referee talking about the clock but at least all throughout the night you may notice that we might give you slightly different rankings than what you saw, what you heard from the introductions.
Some of those come out at various times and whether a boy is ranked number one or two or three, that means we may have some little disagreement.
That's correct.
But those rankings change pretty regularly.
All right.
We are now down to the end of the first period and Davis is up by four and he gets his choice in the up or down position to start the second period and that they had the odds.
Iowa State had their choice.
They took the even numbered matches under the clock.
Basketball Davis wants off now normally in that and that kind of throw position that's where Pecos he wants to be.
That's right.
That's a movie he got in there for the trip and so on.
But what we saw in the replay that the Davis countered back tough, that man, that man, Bush had a caution on the top.
So very early this morning before the whistle just came off to think come on down next time.
That's a match point.
Come on down.
John Rivers telling him because his honesty, Davis in there takes him right back down again.
He leads 5 to 1.
There's a one off because his pep moves and a good play reversal and a roll at it's now 5 to 3.
Stay down, no riding time.
We've got a five at least on your down Davis on top.
If you remember Pecos, he won the first combined match between these two boys, 13 to 5.
It was a major.
But he has to come back.
He's going to get it up here.
This time he's down by two.
And Davis has looked very good.
Had that first five point move.
Davis is in that stand up position trying to get the hands, but he's got to split up and get dirty.
He's got one.
There it is.
Makes it six two, three, six two, three, four.
Barry Davis in this crucial opening match, Iowa against Iowa State, he goes single.
He's in there pretty deep on it, although there's there's still a reason for the takedown.
No point scored yet because he was not able to underhook him and really it turned it into kind of a double.
He got both legs together there and took it away from Perkasie and ended up with the takedown.
Davis looking marvelous out here for the Iowa fans.
He he got it where because he sometimes like to wrestle from on a counter but he would not let up because he underhook him and came up 8 to 3.
Now look, one minute and 45 seconds.
Understandable escape by the cozy.
Now the eight four score Davis been looking real tough here been aggressive you know you've been on the offense as a single shot by a epico easy but he telegraphed that move his shot from way out there Davis was working trying to work a counter move, snap down, spin around, type, move, block off the arm, maybe spin around behind, get your head down.
Less than a minute and a half left in the second period at Iowa City, there's Barry Davis on the right, leading by 4824 in the second period.
This would give the Hawkeyes great momentum if they got this one back.
He's pulling it.
There's your traffic in that position because he managed to keep the arm in a tight runner.
Davis been countering that real well and almost scored two again they're maintaining a good base pressure and back into him We thought all year that Barry Davis is improving improving improving.
It was going to do awfully well and the year came and he's here.
Oh, he's a good one.
He's a good one without question.
He won three state high school championships and he didn't do that by accident.
He's a good mover, good, good center, gravity, good sense of balance.
Oh, they would have recovered.
But because he managed to get back to his base again, 30 seconds, 30, 30 seconds left in the second period, no riding time to anyone's advantage at this point.
Davis has 54 seconds to 24 efficacy, so neither one has a net once in a lifetime.
But Davis has been putting the pressure on.
He's the man who's making the moves.
And that's a secret in the meet.
The that's the secret, Doug.
In any meet, you've got to carry the offense to him, beat up, be the attacker, so to speak.
Go after Davis with that Underhook situation under control of the other arm.
And that is the way everything a stall against opposing star running back opposing at the end of the second period 8 to 4.
Davis We asked Mike because he earlier how he feels about being first on the mat for the Cyclones.
Well, it makes me kind of nervous in these big matches and there's a lot of people out there because when you first win now you really don't know what's going to be the momentum of the team and you want to get the momentum going your way like Coach Nichols has.
You know, he tells me that to do well.
So start it off for the team.
So I have to go out there and try to do my best and try to win.
So the rest of the team will say, Hey, these guys are that tough as well.
But they are looking tough tonight, those hawks, it's 8 to 4.
Barry Davis is out on top and it's going to take a major rally here for Mike because at the end, he was just caution, by the way, on top, the same way.
All right, Davis, was it put together in the second period?
Far too quick a moment?
Yeah, We've got to caution boys out of caution now.
And because he has a stall warning, because he has been a good writer and he's scored points from this position, but Davis is on his feet right back down.
But that's potentially dangerous.
Puts them both back down.
Don't jeopardize the hundred either.
Contested.
Okay.
Come on down.
Right.
If Davis can keep Sarkozy out of that cross-body ride with a four point potential, he's he can do well and win this match.
That's correct.
He's in good shape right now.
Eight four.
And of course, he's the down position, but he's going to have to watch the back point and he's going to have to get moving.
He's going to have to do underneath just like he did on his feet.
There is what there is what Davis is looking for.
But but because it was looking for but John Raber said no points, got 2 minutes and 22 seconds left in this period.
And he almost had something going for him there on top but was not able to get the back points.
We are down to two 13/3 period.
Davis would like to turn it.
He's trying to he's trying to free himself.
He's trying to get a free that on if he's going to do anything.
And because he's trying that I'm a real tough on him now.
He's got a free if he just continues to move but typically steps in again on in and gets up high in the hips Got that bomb over there by I'm not sure that's the side that because he likes to use a cross-body right in I suppose most boys have a pet side don't they.
Oh I think that's absolutely right.
They have a favorite side, but they have to learn to use those maneuvers on both sides because they never know what position they're going to be in first.
And Gable, he wants his young man out of there.
He doesn't like to have him down.
It's against a man of strongest because he had an injury time or because he's complaining of a knee or a minute and 40 seconds out left and right in time.
We don't think you've given it for you yet.
It's a minute and 41 seconds for Iowa State, but Kozy and 54 seconds for Davis.
We got a slight knee strain or something.
I'm Perkasie out there, Doug.
I'm not just certain what it is, but we have injury time at this point and it's not the time of year for that.
If any time of year.
No, it sure is.
We're not going into the Big eight and Big Ten tournaments and then following that with the Nationals, you don't want anyone injured at this point.
There's Doctor Harold Nichols, 87% winning average is an you coach and because he is coming up to his feet here, we have a little replay here.
Maybe we can pick up where there's a new strain or something.
It it it may not show any evidence of it.
Here he comes down on the knee pretty hard there, but it was the right knee that he was complaining about.
I'm not certain if that's where he got a strain on it or if it's maybe been progressing as the match went along.
Iowa coach Dan Gable going back again.
It's 8 to 4 here.
Davis leads over Perkasie.
And up next at £126.
We're looking ahead is Tim Riley of Iowa against John Thorn of the Cyclones.
He'll be in there tonight.
The young man, freshman from Algona, I think because he probably has taken the advantage of his fall or two minute injury time and we're probably about there now, perhaps close to it.
John River says we're ready to go.
That's what happened at Oklahoma and a big win for Iowa and then a three day to start it off again.
Davis this time unable to slip out, but he gets to his feet.
But they get up potentially dangerous position here.
He puts them back down with a minute, 30, one minute 30.
And Davis leads by four.
Iowa Iowa State Davis is coming to the stand up position.
You'd like to you'd like to split those hands here and come out for one if he can, because he puts him back down.
He's got no back being called back, Coach.
No back left, no back points, back and forth.
A referee indicates all those five point moves.
I'll tell you what, they are big.
They're tough to come back when you're wrestling to win these with this kind of talent out in the mid five point move off the court to come back on It is now because he does have riding time but he is behind by four points.
He also picked the Oklahoma freshman to start off the Iowa State Oklahoma cyclones against the Hawks because he needs he needs a lot of punch in a hurry.
You need a lot of points in a hurry.
He's got 55 seconds to get him in.
He's down 8 to 4 at this point.
And Davis needs an escape.
An escape would really be very big for him because he would put him up by four and he's moving out of there.
And that's that's what he better be doing at this point.
He doesn't want to get caught on his back.
We have only 35 seconds to run through up and he may get back on.
So now it's 10 to 4, 10 to 4, and the time is running with 2 seconds left to go.
He shook him up and took the two points drop right down here.
The double T he's working in pretty tough on top right now.
His waist was driven into stay in behind the arm.
We got a one point on top going on the bottom that makes it 11 to 4 five.
Now we'll be riding time for par cozy.
But it's a big, big win for Barry Davis of Iowa.
That was a big win for the Hawks, 11 to 4, David.
Well, I'll tell you the unexpected.
I'm not sure that's entirely unexpected, but it's an upset.
It is a big win for Barry Davis and Huxley.
Great.
And I think after the first match, Barry Davis over Podkolzin and he got a five point throw in the first period, 124.
At the end of the first period it was 5 to 1, it was 8 to 4.
At the end of the second period, Davis had a takedown and because of the reversal, each had an escape.
And then Davis had a big reversal.
In the last period.
And because he unable to get back points, goes down to the feet, 11 to 5.
It's Iowa three, Iowa State, nothing.
Well, we always say that first win is big O awful big in a meet like this awful big.
Tim Riley on the left, 126 pounder for Iowa.
John Thorn on the right, 126 pounder for Iowa State.
This is Thorn's first Iowa Iowa State meet.
Well, it's not his first meet.
His first one with the Met, say, Iowa and Iowa State.
And Tim Riley is ranked number eight in the country.
He's had another good year.
He's 25 miles a sophomore.
Both Iowa boys, two Johnny, all going to high school state high school runner up and Tim of course, an Iowa City boy, two time state champion thorn on the left and Riley on the right.
Now, it clearly is incumbent on some Iowa state wrestler somewhere to win, one that they didn't expect to win.
Well, installing guys, let's go on the run the paper and from the form charts that should have been Iowa State's math but that's why you're wrestling to find out who's going to win.
Somebody forgot to tell Barry Davis.
That's right.
Well, double warning.
Davis looked up tonight and the last time I saw him was against Wisconsin, I believe.
And he looked awful tough in that one.
And against Oklahoma State, that's the night he beat Randy Willingham.
Supposedly, the final score was 11 five.
Very good.
Oh, Dawn against Riley.
Not much has happened so far.
We're down to 40 seconds to go.
In the first period.
Riley on the left.
And excuse me, Bradley Parker was the opponent against Riley the last time.
And striking.
They're going to try their luck with freshman John Paul.
Now let's go to Exeter.
You might stay with it.
Thorne has been wrestling some of the hundred and £18, and if either man has a power advantage, it would probably be Riley.
I think so.
He took advantage of the flow of the trip.
He got the takedown.
There's a step over by Thorne for a 2.0.
Nicely done.
Two.
Good move.
The nice takedown on behalf of Riley.
And a nice reversal by Thorne.
Who?
A good move to two at the end of the first period.
Thanks, Pop.
And Iowa State gets its choice.
Let's look at that.
There comes your step over.
He got the wing on the near arm and then steps over with the high leg and almost caught him in some back point.
Nice move by John Bourne freshman Iowa State at every turn in the running for the one corner ten more.
Remember that one.
Oh he had a nice takedown there on that arm throw and trip on John so let's change the two points takedown reversal.
And now the one point escape for Riley and the riding time is negligible.
So far.
Referee John Raber is out there.
He's already worn both of these boys for stalling In the first period, out of bounds, two and a half minutes to go.
Yes, these are two young men who know the significance of this made their Iowa boys and they've followed it.
I'm sure the fortunes of these two schools long before they ever came to wrestle.
Oh, without question.
They sure have.
And I'm sure the both of them wanted to see that day.
They could wrestle for the cycle and to the hawks.
And now as a freshman and sophomore, going against one of the largest crowds to witness a duel tonight, that's that's got to be a good feeling.
12,750 people are here.
Both boys are kind of feeling each other out now, looking for a set up, the inside tie up series attempted there.
Ben Riley, both of them like to have that inside tie up with some underhook working for each other, maybe work a trip single, double off of it.
Riley goes in on the leg, but Thorne jerks out of it single and Thorne quickly moved out of it.
A good offensive move and a good counter move to negate the two point takedown.
I mean, at 40 left and then at 40 left, Riley got a takedown in the first period on a throw and trip, and Thorne stepped across for a reversal.
It's 3 to 2 with Riley leading now because of his escape here in the second period.
We haven't had much happening on the feet yet, but referee John Raber says they're working at it.
He hasn't warned anybody or penalized them.
Both boys are working, attempting to work into a setup of some kind.
A touch and go ahead, jerk, snap arm, throw as a snap.
You see a snap and oh, nice step on there by Riley.
No points yet yet He's got a nice a beautiful back under quick got in a real deep on it got around and John Thorne here it is knows how he goes underneath that arm snaps the head a little bit, comes running behind John Thorne, does everything he can to keep him losing that two point takedown.
But look at the way Riley keeps at it.
Now.
He does, right?
Keeps after it.
John almost is out there.
Almost.
You see no points yet.
You're still scrimmaging for the takedown.
And right there is where he got it just before they went out.
Well, now we have an injury time out here for Riley.
He may have been bumped a little bit.
I think that was a real scramble for the takedown after he got in there for the dunk under.
He made a real nice move on that duck under the initial move, McCoy scrambled from there, and just before going off the edge of the mat, Riley was able to turn it into two and he now leads 5 to 2 one minute left in the second period, the Hawks are off to a big start.
Gary Davis upset Mike because the next time they meet, they might not consider that.
Not such an error.
No.
Well, they both have to change when there's a step over and got it even this time.
And they got him up high and the cats finally came out for front for the one point stand up.
Now that is a somewhat dangerous move when somebody is looking for it, isn't it?
Well, if they can stick that half in, he don't do it fast enough and get down low enough with those hips.
Sometimes you can get turned over on your back.
But John worked it effectively for the two point to begin with, and almost anyone who dared did help him to get the one.
All right.
I think there is the prettiest of the 12,750, I believe 30 seconds left in the second period.
It's five three.
Riley on the right owns a two point lead right in time.
Nothing so far.
16 to 12 seconds in favor of Riley Thorn.
Hasn't been able to penetrate at all.
Riley has the only two takedowns, one on the arm.
Throw of the trip.
Allen on a duck under.
There's another duck under.
All he gets into of that on quick as he's very quick at the end of the second period.
Riley will go to the top leading 5 to 3 said this is his chance maybe to get some riding time ranked nationally eight at this time career record 31 and 12.
He's beaten some good wrestlers this year and I don't I don't for a minute think he's got a finish as low as eight from the nationals but he's a good one.
John Fournier as a freshman is looking real tough when he faces off.
We've got a54 star, but Thorne will have to figure out some way to penetrate and take Riley before he can really make something of this match.
He's behind with no riding time advantage anyway way.
At this point, Riley has had the true takedowns thrown.
He's not scored on.
Takedown has been the reversal and the two games and a warning each way.
So next time somebody slows down, it's a penalty and it goes against going out and blocking off with a hand.
That's the call.
Blocking off the head.
That's a one point hit.
Riley had his head going down, almost had it going on for blocking off the arm.
Spin around tight, move, snap down, counter, third period.
Interesting things happen in third periods.
And in the first period, as we just saw in the last minute, we're now only we're less than 2 minutes away from the end of this match run throw attempt there by Riley A moment.
Go out to the middle again even up standing up there's your duck under a single combination by Riley Thorn steps out of it.
There's a trip to get to out of control The trip.
Nice throw arm, throw, body, throw Combination with the trip gets a two point takedown.
That's three takedown variety tonight.
8 to 4 for Riley over Thorne.
He's getting stronger, and he's beginning to build up riding time.
As as of right now, there's not a net advantage of one minute three either.
Boy, But he's building it up at this point.
He has 50 seconds.
Riley has, and it's building.
Thorne has 20, such as 12 seconds and just two.
Another 15 or so here from while we're talking to you now.
And it'll be a point potentially for Riley Johnson looking like maybe you'd like to set up a roll maneuver and become into a stand up.
But Riley's the right and tough one.
Point read.
Okay, let's go.
Let's.
That's a good call.
He's been.
He's just riding on top.
He's got it.
He's got to become aggressive up there and work for some 4.1 the other way.
8 to 5.
One minute left.
Come on down.
So exactly one minute left, in fact, for now.
Well, a lot of time here for a four or five point move in the bottom.
Riley looks awful tough on top of him.
He was right with that deep waist blocking off that your arm.
There's a sit out and turn in combination blocking off of that near leg by Thorne but no points it as he ducked back into the other side one point mix game Riley does have a potential riding time point so he leads by in practical purposes by about three instead of a2826.
But Thorne has not been able to score on the offense and that's the difference so far, where all his points have come from underneath.
That's correct.
And it looks like the both boys maybe would have a greater shot at each other if they would drop in off, maybe touch and go type set up for the feet they're tying up and then he trying to go from there and the other boy is negating any move they might make.
We have 18 seconds left to see the clock.
Iowa won the first match at oh, Riley in with a nice double and it's Kumar wraps it up double with him holding Donovan out for two.
There comes kind of a shoulder roll 1.8 for Thorne and it's right in time point also for Riley.
It's 11 to 7 in favor of the Hawkeye Ball winner at £126, 11 to 7.
And the Hawks go up six, dropping over the Cyclones at 126 winner 11 seven.
The crowd all excited here because they've seen the Hawks go out with two right at the beginning.
We're going up to £134.
And as I think we expected and as everybody expected, Randy Lewis will not wrestle at this late month job in the 24 because, you know, that's going to be going against the cyclones.
Jim Gibbons And I think, as you said, that anticipated from the beginning.
But it's our understanding that Fred Geno yesterday was as well on his way to ending.
Yes, he's his he's been given the go ahead.
And so he will appear, I'm sure, in the Big Ten championships and be on his way to defending not just his Big Ten title, but try to win his third national title.
That's right.
If he wins the Big Ten, it'll be four in a row for him.
Jim Gibbons on the left ranked in the top three against Mark Fresno, the first of which was Geno Boys.
First of the brother Act tonight for the Hawkeyes.
Here's your Underhook series again Boy a trip on all because you know kind of turned away passed away from him Gibbons wisely took advantage and came right in behind took him to the mat with the trip he leads to zero counter on a headlock that have been freestyle.
He wouldn't be able to get those points.
POINT There's your movie.
He's on the hook, tries a trip.
I noticed Casino turned away, tried to work a headlock of a series of some type of look.
It appeared to be that way in a way, and Jim wisely came in behind put him to the mat for two I only problem was Mark didn't hit the head.
That's right.
There he is.
Well, that's a quiet down rating at £126 for Mark Does he come on down which is bad but he's up at 134 early in the year.
He was certainly rated the better stand at the state by the casino, but the hands turned in 2 to 1.
Gibbons only casino does like to throw.
He does like to throw.
I mean, he's dangerous from that position.
Yes, he is.
He's a good upper body man.
Gibbons is good in the upper body.
He's good in singles two gets a good single with a left, takes a base out from underneath them and put them down.
This is one in the first match.
You remember where all the major sporting events happen?
Santa Barbara's in.
Oh, God.
Given based off of him Encounter When you wrestle Mark Pacino, you have to watch for those kind of fireworks things.
Well, the unexpected, as you said earlier, does happen.
Jim goes in for kind of a single High Cross series and back out wisely.
He didn't get in deep enough, not good enough penetration.
We have less than a minute to wrestle in the first period.
There's a running back, but the third, get a five over.
He went after three low move right now those are both that was it Here comes the Americans you throw right there a real quote by Mark Macedo puts him on the back to point take out 3.45. move.
Both boys had the same tie up on the on opposite sides and decided to go for it and made it work by a pancake shoulder roll by Gibbons He was allowed to go through and was, you know, kind of gnarly given that brings it up to six three comes out 4140 leads over gibbons and oh we say again those five point moves that momentum helps I'll tell you that first one at £18 match at Davis was one to put a lot of momentum out there for them back to the center where just a few seconds left here.
First period, time enough for somebody to make a throw, though.
It doesn't take long position is such a key factor position, power, quickness.
There it is, 20 seconds right in time for Trizano down for forgiveness and Fresno wanted to go down Jimmy Gibbons right third nicely at this weight class 134.
He's down 6 to 3 casino comes up his fight the split those hands he's got to have at least three fingers or more trying to get him split and still maintain his feet at ten times we can get turned in for the one.
Gibbons is not permitting him to do that.
You tap red.
But Gibbons knows also that he is trailing by three and he can't afford to say up there and let the time to play like that.
Writing time is 20 seconds for each bar.
At this point, one of 20 seconds apiece.
Again, Trevino's on his feet.
Gibbons has always been a real tough rider, Doug, and he's hanging in there, a real tough guy.
Maybe.
Haney arms tying him up.
That was a ten second right there.
You see the Iowa State bench.
That's less, Anderson.
Let's get gingerly getting up.
He hurt his back this week.
He's got come on downstate.
He's taken a little.
Yes, I understand from the beginning here, someone was indicating that at the beginning of the meet, given some of the caution against Jim Gibbons false start, gentlemen, around that time as well.
So, yeah, and Jim Gibbons said he wasn't ready, but Reno referee John Raber says, yes, he was one point escape.
That's right.
Now 73 and escape.
And Iowa's trizano is up by four.
I had and when the ball begins to roll, it can really roll.
So as we said, darn Iowa boy so long against our penalty against was, you know not a penalty point, but a warning for next time.
That's a penalty corner.
We said in the meet last time when things began to go bad for Iowa, you to look for something good to happen.
And now the cyclones are trying to find something.
They've gotten off to a bad start and Gibbons is now behind 7 to 3 at £134.
He fought that off because you don't turn on him.
Tried to get the headlock with it, maybe put him down with it.
But Jim stayed in there real tough, sprawled on top for the two point takedown.
Big eight champion, 134 Jim Gibbons.
That's twice he's gotten picked on points countering a headlock a minute, 45 second period, which he does out well enough.
Let's look at riding time, 20 seconds for casino, 41 seconds for Gibbons, negligible yet we're in the second period, about a minute and 30 seconds left.
In the second period.
There's a upper body move of the trip by Gibbons.
But no takedown.
Gibbons is saying, my knees are here, no dice.
There's the Iowa bench.
Gibbons is on the left, the far side, Trevino on the right, up on the body.
Hooker Both of them attempting the same type of maneuver.
As far as the tie up is concerned.
Now, Gibbons has a double underhook, but he can't turn it anything they both would like throws here.
I'm sure he's got that near an armbar, but not effectively at that now.
There you go.
See you.
Both boys have similar tie ups on opposite sides, and that's where we were before when the throw came.
Yes, 540 for the five point move.
That's the staff alive for Trevino and Gibbons doesn't usually get out of that position.
This time back 1.826 penalty point against casino for stalling our takedown what tie it for Gibbons we're still in the second period we're down to the last half a minute for got a five point move in the first period and he's managed to stay with it ever since.
There's a single leg high crowd cheering.
He gets a lift with it, which really is what he tried there here and a tied to end the takedown.
That's one of Jim's favorite moves with that single high Court series with the lift takes him off her feet just before he has the elbow and under to.
But I don't know if he has enough time to make points out of it.
He's in between the legs or with the period right in time.
Gibbons 58 seconds.
Trizano 20 seconds left.
Anderson Champion 1958 and 60.
I don't know if he would like to go on wrestle tonight.
He's pretty well hobbled up by the answer he's received in practice.
In fact, the one year he didn't win was 1959.
There is Gibbons out 98, and he lost that match right here in this field.
That's correct.
1958, nine national championships, 9 to 8 Gibbons is up there's a spin throw attempt by casino staved off he faced off with Jim Gibbons so we still have the neutral gibbons a big second period five points two two after going down 6 to 3 largely on the basis of that big move, it was center right in the first period, the best, the best thing.
And that's easier for me to say it than for one to do, of course.
But when Casino got that five point move now that big leader last period and a half, he has not been wrestling like he did at the beginning and consequently little difference in the match.
He's locked up back there casino is locked up over Gibbons back and would like to make a throw but Gibbons when he got his hips down, got his center gravity down and negated that position but you could see a throw off of here either boy all it takes is a little let up here there by Peter boy position.
It's so important to I think the Iowa state coaches would like to see Gibbons get into a different setup.
There is the Dutchman Dave Brown, 142 pounder for Iowa State.
His opponent will be when is the last minute and 50 seconds left in the third period scores nine eight Gibbons I look for John Raber to make some kind of a move here quickly unless he's the because you know it's not the wrestling like I thought he might after he got that lead.
Oh no no, no.
He went out of bounds.
It was very close.
GIBBONS One leg was in and one was out because, you know the start wrestling he's not he's not been wrestling here just in the last period or so.
And I'm sure that's not his intent to back out or he's not intentionally backing out, but he just not his effective on his feet as he has been.
And consequently he might get called for stalling again here.
However, it's only 9 to 8 and if Casino could put one together here, the match turns around again.
A lot of time left.
A lot of time and then a 15. Who's going to get it?
Black Flag is called the punch.
You were right there.
Well, he's not been a fit.
He's not been on the offense.
And that's been the difference.
And Jim knew what he had to do and he's been going about it, although both boys are are working tough, without question.
They're both there.
Gibbons had a double underhook and he has that points at a two or four point move.
It's now 14 to 8 in favor of Gibbons, who has come from behind.
He was once down 7 to 3 and he scored 11 out of the last 12 points takedown on a throw two point near fall.
He's got that near an armbar in there.
Pretty tough right now.
A lot of pressure on that near shoulder and that that takes the base right away from Mark Gaziano.
That's pretty tough to come up against.
He'd come to the front side of the head looking for an opening, maybe can catch him, turn him over.
But with 20 some seconds to go, I'm sure Jim is going to be more more concerned with keeping him off his pace, keeping flat out to maintain this win here that he's got going his way at this point.
Well, he has a seven point margin.
He would have liked to got some back points to make a major out of your top.
That's right.
But I don't think he has enough time now to score on the board is 14 to 8 right now and writing time will go to Gibbons but no more points there it is the winner with a in time point by a score of 15 to 8.
Jim Gibbons of Iowa State over Mark Racine.
All the cyclones are on the board for the first time and trail 6 to 3.
Iowa leads going up to 142.
We'll look at that last takedown here, Dave.
Here it comes right now.
Don't here in the double underhook right there, Jim comes in real good position, gets in post chest to chest, puts Mark as you go down for the four point move right there.
Nicely executed.
Now if it held it longer, that would have been the difference between a major and a standard decision.
There are some superb moves here by both wrestlers that last match that was, you know, five point move at the beginning was an excellent move in that last move by Gibbons.
Well, you don't think this one's going to be competitive?
I don't think you've been paying attention because this is these are two of the top boys in the country going at each other.
Lenny Zaleski on the left for the Hawks.
He's lost one time this year and he's lost to the man out there with him, Dave Brown.
And that was a score of 10 to 4.
And they will meet at Iowa State.
Zaleski in the crowd is countering with a reserve loss the loser and lost the march wasn't called to one on a string and one right.
Here comes the move.
But now he's got that single leg up there that I catch.
Notice how he comes in around behind.
Although Dave comes up, only that arm over the top comes out for the one.
So it's 2 to 1.
Yes.
That's Lenny Zaleski has a lot of savvy out there going for the legs.
That's the way he beat Andre Metzger.
Took him down three times in the last minute, 20 seconds or so by going for the legs.
And he's tough.
He's real tough there.
Brown had a bout with the flu last week, just the head of the alternate.
But I think he's back at full strength again.
So you're looking at £242 wrestlers at the top of their form.
They're both good technicians.
Dave Brown is a real good technician on that single High Court series off of an arm shock at arms.
It all went back to center.
Went back to center.
Lenny, of course, already showing us what he can do there on that single high card series.
And he keeps coming.
He comes at you.
When is Alaska?
He was a Big Ten champion last year.
That's correct.
Now they're kind of an arm left, a little shocked going down a single by Dave.
That's Nate Carr.
He'll be up for 150 25 top rank out of 50 Carter in the country Nate car.
This is a big swing match right here Doug This one we're looking at right now.
And of course, that £18 class was a big match.
But as we see things going right now, this has to be a big swing match.
Unless one Iowa State has to win, Iowa State has to come out somehow on top in this one or it's a long road.
Lenny Zaleski, back to the center.
Well, we asked Lenny earlier how he would wrestle Dave Brown differently tonight than the last time they met.
Well, what I'm going to try to do differently, what I did first time is I'm going to try to attack his elbows more than I did last time.
As as far as I went, more upper body, more on his shoulders and more on his head is how I want to try keep my arms low because he's tied up my elbows, pushed into me and making me look down.
He got four stand points in that way.
I was aggressive.
Lenny Solecki, you see him starting on top in the second period.
He has 13 seconds of writing time.
Dave Brown is out in the match.
His time to help turn in Dave Brown.
Well, you heard it from Lenny, how he'd like to negate those stalling calls that went against him the last time.
I like to attack the elbows and you become a little bit more aggressive on his feet for some takedowns.
They started out that way.
He got the first takedown, but we thought maybe to the last time this mismatch took place, right after Randy Lewis got hurt, we weren't sure.
Lenny says it didn't matter that much.
He was going to rob a wrestling match anyway, But we wondered if it didn't affect the Hawks in those first couple of matches right after the shot by Zaleski.
But strong by Brown and counted Rochelle feet back.
2 minutes and two odd seconds here left in the second period.
Both boys are kind of tying up in there, blocking each other with a head looking for a low key here.
There gets the other one the first time that Brown has reached Gillespie, but he couldn't hold it.
It was high Crowd series.
You like that?
Excuse me, Dave.
Well, I'm just going to say, you know, you see a lot of boys now.
The office, of course, do a lot of reach down.
Just grab that knee and pull it in.
The coaches today are just calling them nothing more, but then nipples, so to speak.
Once they get that on the outside.
Yeah, they go into the high crotch series.
From there and then up 35 and then up 35.
So that's the styling, man.
That's how I call it always.
Yeah, that's correct.
Neither one's doing much on their feet at this time.
Again, though, we must, we must say that with the kind of talent we see out there tonight, both boys recognizes the yellow one's talents.
And consequently, you know, it's a little miscue here or there, and it could be all over.
Zaleski scored his two points on a takedown.
Brown has two escapes.
You've got to be aggressive.
You've got to be the attacker.
Keep after the other wrestler stay away from those calling calls.
Nothing happening.
Nothing happening so far.
Now, second, prove you see Zaleski trying to stay away from Barlow.
They're trying to keep locking in on center.
47 seconds.
Let's go.
Neither boy is doing anything to speak of at this point.
As far as a shot for a move, 47 seconds was the call at the beginning.
Right there was the time the referee, John Abrahams, just as they started.
It's down to 35 second period.
No riding time either in this match at this point.
Iowa six, Iowa State three in the team, score three on the first two cyclones finally got one when Jim Gibbons one of the season at 134.
But Murray Davis is one of the Big Macs so far and upset over like opposing.
Still not much happening.
It's a lot happening, but it's not It's all Harry reaction we might get double There it is.
And we're just going to say we'll get another double call.
Both wrestlers, callers calling it more wrestlers penalized for stalling.
Each one gets a point now, three, two, three.
Okay.
Even up three oh.
And who starts on top?
Brown Brown's on top.
He escaped with that sit out maneuver in the last four.
Come on down, Red Harold Nichols and less Anderson, leading back into the picture there, Chris Brown starts on the bottom.
Solecki stands up, goes to the Whizzer.
He's got that over hook Whizzer.
But Brown's locked up in there on him, too.
But he comes out for to three solecki and we're back in that upper body struggle again and Obama sees some offense here.
Now we've got a one point match.
There's no riding time and everything's on the line now in this the third period, they're both in the neutral position.
Zaleski has never beaten Dave Brown.
They've met, what, two or three times and Brown has come away each time.
The winner.
It was close last year in this Iowa City.
Meet last round 1 to 10 tonight.
Zaleski went in there on a on a shot that kind of looked like it was a double double leg shot.
But the overdubbing bass wisely backed out of there.
It wasn't a very serious attempt for a takedown.
That's the team score you're looking at now at 6 to 3.
We're going to get some stalling here.
Again, maybe if something doesn't happen pretty quick.
Both boys are doing a lot of blocking off and pushing one out.
Jon Raber sends them back out.
You're looking at Dan Gable.
There it is.
BROWN But nobody's got it yet.
As long as Brown keeps the leg, he's all right.
But I don't know if he can hold up.
It looks good for Zaleski.
Not yet, no.
Still, Oscar, reason for the takedown.
No points in there.
It is 6 to 3.
Zaleski gets the takedown.
That's ahead and goes up by three here and £142.
We have now a minute and 15 seconds left to go.
And he has Dave Brown down off his face.
Yes, he does.
He's he's he's on there.
Tough on him right now, distributing his weight real well.
They get over that near lake, working him behind the arms, not exposing himself up front.
Got the deep waist right on him.
Take it.
That mere armbar.
But we had less than a minute left.
They had right in writing time.
Dave, it's 54, 55 seconds in Rolling for Solecki, Brown has only nine scores.
A potential running time point to Yes.
I thought the best thing for him to do when he got taken down or the point right there on the bottom.
As I say David Murray in the bottom 50 got picked, fought against him and it's 7 to 3 now.
Oh, wow.
And Dave, that got himself moving right after the takedown.
He was in the mat without question.
But he's kind of taken himself out of there, not with that stalling call.
And the writing came back a minute, 16 for Solecki, 9 seconds for Brown.
So we saw the potential point is there for Zaleski.
There's your set up a lot for next door for too many.
No points yet.
There's going to get a one or two in all of this.
Perhaps he's trying to get the score.
The two, if he can see what happens.
No point checks.
What?
One way contact.
4 seconds left.
Well, I'll tell you, there aren't enough.
Who would take a four point move for a tie?
And Zaleski wins it with a point for writing time.
Let Solecki, who is currently ranked number one, gets up on Last Revenge against Dave Brown and beats him for the first time.
Eight.
The whole They lead now 9 to 3.
And the Hawk-Eye Express is rolling here.
There's Dave Brown very disappointed at losing his second match of the year for the first time to Zaleski.
The other time was up against Metzger and Lenny Zaleski right there.
The happy winner has defeated both of his principal opponents, Metzger and Brown.
All three of those boys are tough for us.
We're not going up to £150 now and again.
Two top ranked wrestlers we have.
Carr ranked first in the country and Fresno second, when you start talking the rankings, you know, Doug, we start talking one, two, three and four rankings.
Boy, there's so little difference in those rankings on a given night.
It's it's who's up to Paris.
Carr has a world of talent.
Trevino has talent experience.
This will be a barnburner, all without question this year.
You said it.
He's so quick.
But let me tell you, Scott Pacino's proven himself too.
Over the years.
Big Ten champion.
Two years ago, he was out last year with a knee injury NCAA runner up in third place finishes the previous year at £150 and cars having the same trouble he had in the last match we saw him in against Oklahoma.
Can't keep his headgear in place.
Let's get another that's Knight's record in two years this year.
And last, we're going to trade headgear.
Out comes a red one minute 28 left.
That isn't going to work too well.
It's going to take too much time.
We may go with that one.
But you guys take this up here just just go with that.
If you get this going, let's go.
Okay.
They're going to.
Yeah, that's.
Let's go.
No headgear today.
Get it fixed.
Let's go.
We got to try to fix it for us.
That's the way it is.
No sense holding everything up.
Both boys are ready to go.
And sometimes you can negate the, you know, the emotional pitch the two boys at waiting out there for a head gear isn't that big of an obstacle until it was time to get it fixed.
Scott Zeno, whose brother wrestled at 134, is a senior from Joliet, Illinois.
Nice block off there by Christina.
He kept he kept Carr away and back.
We come to the center, 46 seconds left, and we're ready with the headgear or at least ready to try it.
My prediction guy, that may not stay too long because he's had problems for that in another match.
If I recall.
Of course.
Now I guess we got the red hit.
You're right.
When he had the problem with before, right, Eric Ghost was in hospital here.
Jonathan shrugged his shoulders like a blink of the eyes.
Need a good headgear.
I'm sure he's thinking right now.
I wish I had a couple in my pocket.
We have 41 seconds left here.
That's a first.
It's a light moment we've had since we started here.
Although the eye of a crowd is picking, it's going to been pretty light headed so far with the Hawks up 9 to 3.
Got 25 seconds left in the first period.
If there is no score or warning for Starling at the end of this first period, one of the boys is going to receive a stalling warning, which is by rule four as he got to his feet.
But I don't know if he was in behind, but he did not take it to the mat with supporting parts inbounds.
Consequently no takedown supporting part 9 seconds left, Supporting parts.
Doug must have remained inbounds.
There was no point scored at all.
One leg was in, but one even out.
And that's the end of the first period.
And with that moves, the difference maker goes up.
I think we asked Nate earlier what the rivalry between these two schools and wrestling Scott Verrazano means to it was first wrestling Oh, what a team.
I think right now they're number one and didn't really get us back on top.
And I think that would be pretty pleasing because we've been working pretty hard and wrestling Scotty means maybe staying on top for me, so I'm not here to beat him, to stay on my way so much as you stand up escape the overlook weather by Nate car Nice turn in or right before his one point escape.
Oh there was a nice move by Zeno.
Almost got in on a high crotch series here.
Come on arm.
Throw him down because, you know, very strong.
They're both strong, but all they sure are two of skill, gentlemen.
And in muscular strength.
Both boys are very, like I say, very strong.
I think probably a quickness car probably has a little left over on for Zeno, but they both have great power.
Well, not crazy.
No.
Managed to and keep that Underhook in there and block that off.
Karl wanted to get in a lock up with a bear hug.
That's twice.
I think that Pacino's managed to shrug that one out of the gray nicely on defense.
My understanding that car could have, could have or did, but on quite a clinic in Michigan.
But the individual match scores that he came forth with, he's a good takedown specialist.
Almost had a heel pick there.
Well, back out about with exactly 2 minutes left in the second period, Karl leads by one, but he has the warning.
Nate Carr on the left, Scott Pacino in the black from Iowa with his.
Back to you.
This is live, Iowa Fieldhouse in Iowa City.
That happened on the edge of the match.
Let me get Houston right there.
I thought this was referee's time.
Wait stands still, 30 minute, 47, second period.
Iowa leads 9 to 3 cars.
Here is locked up on fire.
We really can't put a name on that move other than he just the pressure in on him and went down on that single double combination.
Went right on first got for the takedown and he was going forward and Pacino was going backward.
That's a him on his heels, I guess you might say a minute 22.
Now turn in.
There were two quick encounters.
He lit up when he got that far.
He lit up and got the Cleveland set up turn in.
And Ferguson, as you scratch lit this up, it's now 5 to 1.
I'm not quite certain.
What's the what was the mind of Scott there when he got out?
He looked like he just kind of relaxed and let up a bit.
There was no whistle, of course, for red.
He took advantage and went in after for the two for the two and half long as Nate has kept both knees in, he was all right and he did that.
A 13 and counting down the score is 5 to 1 in favor of Carr.
All right.
On top of that, from behind, always.
You got to check the wing on him.
Now.
He's got that part in there pretty tough.
And he gets a get the elbow that makes it look half.
Now he's got the chicken wing with the parallel pressure, perhaps, and it's getting close now.
He takes it across the back.
Keep in mind, fans, that that that's got to be perpendicular.
Pressure can't be parallel to the long axis of the body.
Then it becomes not only potentially dangerous, but perhaps could be illegal.
We get that we get a twisting hammerlock out of it then, which means that the arm comes away from the back too far and consequently is injurious to the arm and or shoulder.
It's now a hammerlock.
And you got that hammerlock real tight now get that head blocked off.
He may lose.
It's going to be a point for casino outside Arizona.
Here's your move right there.
He comes down here real deep.
He gets the trip with that move and there's his takedown.
He got in a real deep that time.
He managed to trap Pacino's arm against, the body for that move.
And that was, you know, couldn't make that underhook work.
Interesting to see that Pacino blocked it twice, and Carr got it in there for a third time out about 7 seconds left, coming out of the end here of the second period, five for two in favor of Carr car will start in the up position.
Here we go.
You're top the state.
We will come on down out five two.
Nate Carr out in front.
We get 3 minutes.
Tough wrestling left.
I know.
I saw 1980 big eight champion at £150 make our currently ranked number one in the country.
12,750 people here in Iowa field house for this rematch of the Hawkeyes in a side close and out comes Pacino.
It's 5 to 3 number one and number one against number two car is a minute and 30 of riding time and Pacino has 2 seconds.
I should have pointed that out.
Oh, Ben gives you an idea.
The car has a potential point ahead of him here if he can maintain that difference.
Again, you see Carr trying to get under for that lockup, not £150 at the end of this match.
We're going to have a break.
They take a break in Iowa City before the last five matches, have time to catch our breath and look back at a few things and ahead of a few others.
And a profile on Randy Lewis and Eddie Banach.
Here's what you're seeing.
The Iowa State coach, Harold Nichols, on his feet.
Time has called here.
I think it's got Pacino as a nosebleed.
You know, I don't know if it's a nose or a scratch or something on the chin edge right now.
When you show blood, you don't run the time out clock, right?
Well, on a nosebleed, you would not coach.
But this may be some of the time and I really can't tell Why is that?
Because it's you don't it's hard to fake blood.
That's correct.
The night after that's Jay Robinson.
This will be the final race.
And Chuck Yeager right behind him, two assistant coaches at Iowa wrestling in the middle of a marvelously successful program after the 1980 and Iowa team physician is out there looking over Scott.
All that's Chuck Yeager.
We've got a two time national champion.
A world champion?
That's correct.
Freestyle one.
Just look at the team.
We're ready to go again with 2 minutes, 5 seconds to go.
Third period.
It's car 503.
Me car is so quick and Trevino is very solid.
There was no technician.
He got it on the leg and they got the two not yet been driven yet.
I don't believe they're lucky.
Well, let's work out right now.
He gets in there real tough on and I can't get he gets the lift with it takes me to the mat but they're neat supporting parts go up and they're facing off the points was close but they were all at 30 minutes, 30 left and we're talking to the end again here, right to the wire again.
He locks up and for the third time in four tries, Pacino manages to shrug it out of the casino.
Made a nice move on that last one and almost made it work for the two.
It was a tough judgment call, but you can see for yourself there on the screen, never got a bounce situation took place.
Here comes start talking to John right back out to third warming contact a temperature That's right I just I think car doesn't get a bit.
Okay.
All right.
Here we go then.
Watch.
John are able to take a look at car on the whistle to see whether he backs up 5 to 3 to start there.
But yes, a car does have a warning.
He locked up in a bear hug, but at about a two bear hug with the trip three point takedown, that's the sort of thing that he wanted to get in there.
That hand, that upper body moved Doug and Kyle thing that I was used to that because that's what the Banach boys do.
Oh, without question.
They're all just sit out, turn in by Scott.
But I think he goes back down.
Let's get that fixed.
Yeah.
No points were scored there.
I think he goes back down.
Let's see it again.
Here comes your move.
Right.
And then he got the other arm under you got underneath, got his lock.
He isn't really locked, secured but he's done another double hook, so to speak with the bear hug.
Got that trip on that near leg.
And Scott, of course, wisely goes belly down so he doesn't get caught on his back for some four points.
And it's car 7 to 0 three.
He has car has a minute, 47 seconds of riding time.
Trevino has 2 seconds right now.
Then we've got a73 score card out in front.
Must be a split lip now, Scott two zero beat Oklahoma's talented Roger Frizzell.
You it there?
Oh, he's a good one when you don't you don't win there's Chris Campbell to back in the field house where he was a great wrestler for the Hawkeyes football game between the Minnesota or just got to on the Iowa state side.
I just want to mention here, Doug, that, you know, having played second third, that national tournament on two different years, that tells us a great deal about what kind of talent we're looking out here.
And he came as close as you can come to a national championship without actually winning one because he went to a referee's decision after an overtime.
That's correct.
In his sophomore year against the boy from Oregon State, x 6 to 7 was, needless to say, a disappointed loser, Dan Hicks.
And that was it.
Iowa State, right?
44 seconds I left here.
There's the team score.
I hope we're giving it often enough for you people.
I know you might come in late and not know what the score is and wonder when we're going to say it.
Iowa nine.
Iowa State three oh.
So why the get out?
But that may be a white point.
Red white play red flag down a shoulder hole attempt there by jorginho.
But he may have indicated if necessary roughness kick I think a kick when you probably know.
Okay.
Oh, there he got into a battle.
There comes a through as a counter move by con no point scored two nice move by both boys nice double shot by Pacino and a nice counter move on on a on a body blow by Carr 23 seconds left.
Carr does have the potential right at time of day 8 to 4.
You know you just shudder when you're looking at two boys with the ability that we see out here tonight because one little move and it's 5.0, it's all over who I share it with a four lead, the kind of move you'd expect Nate to make.
But he was willing to do it.
A little head chuck body thrown there by Carr near the match edge.
Yeah.
You know, you look at an 8 to 4 score, you think you're comfortably ahead and got things under control, but not in this kind of competition.
We're down to the end and it looks like an Iowa state marker.
This time.
For the second time this year, Scott Trevino goes down to defeat against Nate Carr of the Cyclones with riding time, the score is 9 to 4 in favor of Carr.
It's three points for the Cyclones now, and at the end of £150, Iowa, nine and the Cyclones six.
I'm not sure where the two teams hope to be at this point, but I know the Hawks have to be happy that they got victories from Davis at £118 over Mike Buchholz and at £142 where Lennie Zaleski beat Dave Brown.
Now we're going to have a break here.
Let's look back on this is an intermission here at Iowa Fieldhouse in our live coverage.
And we're going to take a look back at the first five.
There are £118.
Boy, that was a big one.
Oh, it sure was.
Doug, with that five point move right off the bat by Davis over because he put because he down where it was catch up wrestling the remainder of the match for.
That's right.
And because he had no takedowns in that match 11 to 5 then at 126 it was another big one there was Riley.
He got a good effort from his opponent, John Thorn.
But again, there was a there were a couple of fine takedowns in there.
Four of them, in fact.
For Riley, takedowns were the difference in that particular match, and it was 11 to 7 then.
Jim Gibbons, after being thrown for a five point move in the first period, came back and defeated Mark Fresno, 15 to 8 to put the cyclones on the board.
And then in the big rematch at 142, Lenny Zaleski got all the takedowns, two of them, and beat Dave Brown 8 to 4.
That was a major swing match and revenge for the last match they had against each other.
And you just saw that 155 match between Nate Carr and Scott Fresno with Carr with some flashy work, got all the takedowns, three takedowns, one escape and a penalty point to his fourth escapes, 9 to 4 with right in time.
And that's what we are halfway through as you look at the Iowa cheerleaders right now, tonight's Iowa Iowa State meet Dave Marks, the final dual match for both teams prior to their conference championships.
It looks like Iowa is going to go pretty well for that Big Ten season because I believe, don't you, that that not any of the other Big Ten teams are really up in their class this year.
I think you're absolutely right.
I think the probably the logical contender would be Wisconsin Badgers.
But they're young They're and of course, these hawks are so physical and they're so dominating and they and they're talented and they've proven that in past years.
And they've got the same material.
So I think you'll see the Hawks real tough in the Big Ten.
On the other hand, the Big Eight meet, which is actually the Big five, because the two Kansas schools and the Colorado team are no longer wrestling the big eight is going to be a real dogfight among the two Oklahoma schools at Iowa State, which is an annual affair, of course, a tug without question.
But I think it looks to be more so that this year than any previous year, because of what they've done with each other, Oklahoma comes in and beats the cyclones when they were then at that time ranked number and Iowa State dropped Oklahoma State.
So we've kind of had a turnabout.
They're the three now.
They go down immediately.
Other on the map, the tournament set up.
Anything can happen.
12,750 people here.
And we hope you're enjoying this little affair.
That is the rematch between Iowa and Iowa State.
As you know, we've been having our off the map features this this year at tonight's Iowa Iowa State meet marks the final dual match for both teams before they go to the conference championships.
And at the Big Ten, we'll see the wrestling return of Randy Lewis, the defending national champion at £134 who weighed in.
I think, for crowd approval tonight, some moral uplift for the Hawkeye fans.
And he'll be ready next week.
Tonight, let's meet Randy Lewis and Iowa's other national champion antibiotic off map.
We that both Randy Lewis and Ed Bannock are outstanding.
Iowa Hawkeye wrestlers.
Randy Lewis, a senior from Rapid City, South Dakota, was a member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team and also competed in Russia with the U.S. All-Star team as a high school wrestler, Randy compiled a three year record of 93 wins and no losses, including 85 pins.
And he holds the national record of 45 consecutive pins.
His Iowa accomplishments include three Big Ten titles, and he's won the National Collegiate title past two seasons.
Here is awesome Iowa sophomore Ed Barnett from Port Jervis, New York.
Ed set a new Iowa record by winning 41 matches in his freshman year.
He also won the Big Ten championships.
He's won the Midlands Open two times and he is the defending national collegiate champion and also holds the record in the Big Ten by pinning an opponent in just 47 seconds.
Randy and Ed are extraordinary wrestlers, but just what is it that makes them national champions by hard work and by battle?
You know, you have to be confident that you're going to be you can put in all the work in the world, but if you don't think you're going to win, you're not going to win.
You know, you have to.
Yeah, that's what the whole thing with all this confidence, you have to not think you're going to win.
Dan Gable as head coach of the Hawkeyes and is the model of confidence for Randy and Ed Gable was labeled by many as the greatest amateur wrestler in the world, and he compiled an unbelievable high school and collegiate record.
He also was the 1970 Olympic gold medalist and just recently was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Dan Gable has been called the best conditioned athlete in the world.
You and he made the statement this year that he's going to pin everyone and well, he hasn't.
But, you know, I'm not going to doubt him because everyone doubted him that he was going to win Nationals last year and he went out and did it.
I always want to have those high goals.
And Lewis goes, I can't believe you.
He set those goals.
You Saw you know, your feet are never touch the ground, your goals are so high.
And I go well I don't think they are.
You win through confidence and you gain confidence through working out and through success and, you know, and it's it's paid off for me.
And, you know, that's that's what how he wins to he he works real hard and he's confident and he knows what he can do.
We're going to go back on the mat here in just a moment live from the Iowa field house at the halftime break.
It's nine for Iowa, six for Iowa State.
If you enjoyed this made and you had a friend who was hoping to be able to say it wasn't able to get another chance on Monday night at 1030, we'll have a rebroadcast of this Iowa Iowa State meet.
That's 1030 on your IPB Channel.
And we'll have the Iowa High School Championships next Saturday night at 630 Live.
Well, that's what this one will do without you Dave.
Except you run the tournament.
That's correct.
But we're looking forward to it.
You'll see some of where these outstanding wrestlers are coming from.
Iowa's best our annual high school championships, beginning with the award winners at 630.
Let's pause now for a station ID Now, Tim Arena for the Hawkeyes, Iowa versus Iowa State from Iowa City.
Hi.
The fieldhouse, there are the Iowa cheerleaders.
They've had a lot to cheer about.
Iowa leads 9 to 6 at the end of the first five.
And we're going to the upper way.
It's where Iowa is probably strongest of all the cyclones have a lot of power in there, too, but the cyclones have got to have some things happen here.
I think they really had feel they had to be better off after 150 than they are now.
You're looking at 158 coming on the right there.
King Mueller And that's Jim Farina Yeah, I think without question, Doug, a lot of things had to happen in those bottom four or five to get the cyclones out in front there.
Whether they would like to have been going into these upper weights because the hawks are are even more physical in those upper weights than they are on the bottom.
And they're scary.
They're a scary lineup.
Well, £158.
Jim Farina wrestled Jim Zaleski.
The last time the two two teams met came Miller, who had a knee, is back and back in the lineup again.
He finished third in the country last year at 150.
And he's tough.
He's without question.
Sophomore Jim Farina out of Franklin Park, Illinois, is going to have to wrestle above expectations tonight to get into this match.
But he can do it.
I'm sure he has the ability to do so.
A lot of people here now settling down again after this intermission tonight in the Iowa Fieldhouse.
A minute, three left in the first period.
A lot of people we've seen tonight from all around the state, you figure there were 13,000 and some in the first meet between these two teams and Ames.
And the crowd has been listed as 12,750 here.
And of that 26,000 and some there were some who were at both.
But I think really not many big lot of people have seen these two teams in action this year.
Not a great deal going on at this time.
On the feet.
Doug King has made hot shots.
There have been so 25 seconds left.
And you're right, not much more, not much to be a tough one to call for the Warren, too.
Well, I think at this point it have to in favor of the hawks, because he's made a few shots in there and is kind of blocked off in that neutral position.
Mueller's strong he likes to throw in from the feet upper body stuff too.
There's the end of the first pretty actually the time the clock says zero, but the third is here when it goes against four in, when it goes up against the Warriors, the Scarlet.
Now King looks good.
Well, we earlier talked with him and asked him about his injury last year, how he adjusted to it.
Injury was a cartilage operation at the end of last season.
And since then, they've had to go back in at the beginning of this season and clean up some other damage I did to it.
And I've been going up to the wrestling room and after that operation has been going up like half heartedly a lot of times not working like I should and still working to be a national champion.
I just been working to get through a practice, but he's out there tonight.
He's managed to win the position from Jim Zaleski.
Yeah, big.
Now he's he's tough and he's proven himself before.
He just needs to get some matches under his belt and get in the kind of condition that he'd like to be in and get the confidence he needs back off that knee.
And he made a very good move off the whistle that time.
Sure did.
Stood up and turned in for a quick one.
One to nothing in favor of Mueller of the Hawkeyes.
Out of bounds is your time, both of you.
That's very humble.
He'll be up next.
£167 for Iowa State.
He'll be looking for revenge.
His only lost this year was to Mike Deanna in Ames.
Jim has got to get some offense going here and everyone's made the moves and he makes another one.
Jim has not made an offensive shot yet of any kind.
He's going to have to get moving win there.
It is only one possible point to move it to four.
You're in back of the world and it's early in the match.
Referee indicated he was blocking with a had or under 2 minutes left second period.
Gentlemen, it would appear to me that there could be a takedown attempt there by either one of the two boys.
Both of them appear to have given opening once in a while there and a double or single attempt.
But Miller is the only one that's penetrating thus far.
And consequently we had the stalling call go against Farina.
You see, Farina picked that leg up out of there.
That's the one that Mueller's been shooting at.
Yeah, but when you're doing that, you're not attacking again.
Miller is the man is putting his head in there but he's but even then King's not seriously going after that takedown, but certainly more so than Farina a minute 22nd period to do nothing.
Mueller with an escape and stalling point has the lead there.
He comes in, but again, he's reaching.
Oh, there's a single it's the first move for Farina.
No points off of it.
Yeah looks like familiar going to come out the back door and score, but Jimmy's got that leg to make it a potentially dangerous situation here.
Not moving out either it or stalemate or go out of bounds I guess any whatever combination of the No I don't want out of all well I wanted one of those three things to happen in here.
He gets in there real deep on that single high crotch.
It looks like he was going to get him turn for the run.
But Mueller keeps moving through.
He comes out the back door.
But you see there, that's why I thought we were going to get the potentially dangerous because going against that knee.
And yet we didn't get that law to the stalemate.
We got it out of bounds.
And Mueller kept his hips moving and it looked as if the best thing Farina could do was get out of bounds.
Yeah, I think so.
Well, there are 53 seconds left, 53 seconds left.
There is a that the time is running on.
Okay, here we go, gentlemen.
Who leads two to nothing?
That was Farinas best best chance yet that yes, he was in deep on it and he just needed to turn it in for the two nil.
Mueller scrambled off of it real well, and I saved the takedown again.
They're locked horns out in the middle.
Farina has already been penalized once for stalling.
And he he particularly doesn't ever get caught back on his heels.
He's got it.
He's all on that.
Mueller's in there.
Wiener sprawling.
And he may counter it.
Yes, he does counter it.
Got his hips back legs backs, ball to counter Miller really shot that takedown up from a distance more or less telegraphed his move and he had been a little closer in with good position.
He may have gotten a few force and they are back to the center for the beginning of the third period and Mueller's up leading to the Iowa State third period, gentlemen.
Well, at this point, down to zero, there's no riding time.
Jim's best bet is to come out of there for one, two, if possible, but want to maybe go for the takedown.
But he doesn't want running time against him because then he's down three.
Oh, Farina got 21 seconds worth in the second period down there.
It was quick underneath the arm and shucked out, so to speak.
And he's got the one, 2 to 1.
That's good.
That was a two second drive there.
David, You're telling me in a nice way there is no riding time to this point.
So a takedown is going to win it unless it stays like it is, it'll be two one.
MILLER These are two young men from suburban Chicago.
All right.
That's right.
Lockport, Illinois.
And Franklin Park made that trip out of here to the wilds on the other side of the great Mississippi.
Try their fortunes in the West.
Jim Farina of Iowa State manages again to take the leg away that Miller has been striving so persistently to reach out of bounds and again, Farina is in the dangerous position for activity because he has already been warned and penalized one point it's been around the snap, kind of a snap down counter by Farrell, but not quick enough.
Miller kept facing off on him and they're back into the neutral position.
A lot of time left.
Lots of time.
2 minutes, 2 minutes.
Iowa leads in an 89267.
Cyclones are looking for one that maybe they thought originally they could get one stolen Call on Miller going no penalty next time excuse me you know that was not a penalty point next time at the penalty point, that was the first call for stalling against Miller.
Next time on the edge of the mat here, John Raber.
I'll look it over carefully.
Send him back in.
137 137.
This is one of the Iowa State team.
Those they have to have.
They really have to have it go because the Hawks are up 9 to 6 coming into the Iowa power minute, 25 left in the third period.
Miller still out in front, 2 to 1.
There's a move on the way to get back to it.
What will the counter be nice Oh body throw counter what an uncle and Farina got.
He's got a good shot.
I mean I think that his head hit.
I'm not really yes it does look very comfortable.
He's in there real deep on that high crotch.
He gets a lift with it.
Almost got him all the way off, comes down and there comes the body.
Throw it under control by Mueller.
And somewhere in there.
Look, I'm sorry.
It just got jarred loose when he hit his arm.
My head on the mat coming down.
It looked like it was in the forehead area and.
It looked a lot like he was going to.
Here comes our move here in the air.
He comes right now.
I'm going down.
I'm looking for that maybe right there, going against the side of the head on that right there.
Hang right there.
Right there.
There it was right there.
The head came to the mat just a moment before that.
Just before it get to the mat.
And that's where he got it.
And so Mueller maybe just turned into him just a tad.
And I don't think Farina wanted to take his head all the way to the mat.
That was Farinas best shot of the night.
Yes, it was him.
Did he see some of those thousands and thousands of people?
Him That was a football field house.
That's a pretty good blow to the head after you could catch there.
The way it happened, the team physician is out there and get it over here.
Let me get this.
You hear John Raber talking.
He's with the referee.
KING Mueller leads 2 to 1 with a minute and 10 seconds left, and Farina goes rain has got to keep after him.
If he keeps after him, he may get the stolen ball again.
But I don't I don't look for Mueller to back up in there, although he may get it pretty quick if he gets another.
Makes it a couple of shots against Mueller, he may get the stolen call.
Oh, there comes Numa now in for a shot that keeps the wolf in the door for a few seconds here it is out of bounds, I guess.
I thought maybe he blew the whistle for the starting zone.
51 seconds left.
He looked like maybe he's favoring that knee a little bit more than I thought he might after he doesn't have that real good balance at this point yet.
But he usually down to the end.
We're getting close here.
The crowd at the fieldhouse.
Let's go.
Okay.
They had is with all of his every minute of the fieldhouse with a big crowd.
It gets pretty noisy in here when everybody's Jim tying up.
And I think his best bet is to get on that double or single thing.
So working on the upper body maybe moving in on double he's been able to reach him.
Is 25 seconds left no riding time either by the way 22 seconds.
Farina went all the way and tried to get a double.
Couldn't make it.
You were holding on has a one point lead that right here.
Yes.
It's a takedown.
445 for inbound because he's an easier inbound there.
It was a fair takedown right at the end of the period with 8 seconds to go but down with the stack Miller four for Reno on and another swing match goes apparently here to the Hawkeyes.
Both boys are pretty well fatigued in this match.
No riding time.
The winner for two one is Iowa's Take Miller The Hawkeyes now take a 12 to 16 lead.
There's King on that guy.
He looks like he is.
He is still not in good shape.
You'd like to be in.
Oh, I'm sure of that.
I'm sure feels that way, too, because of the injury he's had.
Here comes our move here.
Now, notice that Jim comes in on the Wizard.
A foul maneuver.
He's got a hip toss, but they're comes Miller on the backside with a kind of a over and under Cornell ride type maneuver pushed him to the mat for the two supporting pass.
Stay inbounds and There's you see the delayed call by the official four point takedown.
Well whatever the teams GA this is going to be a heck of a match.
Here are the two best at the weight.
I don't know very many people who don't believe that's the case.
That's right.
Kari Hummel on the left of Iowa State, Mike Deanna on the right of Iowa.
Deanna currently holds the number one ranking and Hummel the number two, whatever that means.
Doug Yes, whatever it means.
These two boys are just excellent wrestlers and just good technicians.
The big competition in that weight, apparently, according to people who look around the country a little bit, was Mark Schultz of Oklahoma.
The Sooners made a trip through Iowa last week and both of these boys beat Mr. Schultz knows it.
Last outing again these two had against each other.
Five three, I believe.
That's right.
Yeah.
That was a little you said many times, Dave.
Wow.
What a slick technician that like the artist.
Yes, he really is.
He has a lot of, a lot of good moves.
And Hummel is a very real pumper.
A worker stays out all the time.
You see him always working early.
He protects his legs well too.
It keeps those elbows in, keeps those hands moving.
And he makes them.
He's a good single, single double wrestler from the feet.
He works in there real close, gets good position.
You see him riding two on one on that arm.
Deanna Deanna tried try to spin around and it didn't work.
25 seconds left.
First period.
Some of these moves where points are gained.
It's pretty hard for us to put a name on them because there's no name on it.
But I know that we're coming down to the end and.
Somebody's going to have to be warned here.
Yes, there's a chance to go down.
I don't know where this will go.
I would guess I'm just guessing now at this point it might go against Hummel.
I think so.
I get ran.
That's right.
9813.
So that's the automatic warning.
There's no score down.
Kurt Hummel will go up went at it and Deanna got the choice I believe he did come out of it.
Yes he did.
And he took down quite a career there for Deanna NCAA finishes so she's had some super years D.A.
out the other coming out of the first escape move and not the second one to nothing.
Deanna.
I don't think either one of these boys are going to keep the other one down any time for a very long period of time.
Oh, my.
Deanna three time champion of the Big Ten.
He could become a four time champion, previously only accomplished by four other wrestlers in the history of the big ten.
So that's quite an accomplishment.
But man, both ways.
Oh, that's a point.
Don't just huddle.
It's work, man.
That's right.
He was warned at the end of the first period, so let's put you up to nothing.
Deanna.
He said, Somebody's going to have to take a chance here.
Somebody is going to have to have a look and roll the dice.
We're looking for a setup here of one another of those tie ups.
So a Hummel trying to drop in on the leg from the outside, a move that he's been using more and more lately.
But it was these two more successful.
These two boys are not the upper body type of wrestlers as some of the others are, even though they're both very capable of doing it.
These two boys are basically singles, doubles, Dutch gunners.
These kind of those kind of combinations, something's going to have to happen in their style.
They go one, there's Dave and then let's happiness it.
No way to go with £177 slot against Eddie Mannix.
Now that's a next time against a pyramid.
Let be a 2.3.
The for Deanna of course it will be a one point run the next time he's called for stalling.
So Hummel is going to have to make some shots.
One minute.
One as it's.
Those two players are tough.
55 seconds left in the secondary drops in on that single.
See what the counter is.
Here comes a wizened overlooked by Deanna keeps that leg in the inside, keeps Hummel from coming around and take to the mat with a triple of some kind.
Deanna Hummel would like to get it out front.
Larry got dropped into the double combination, but that work didn't work.
He's back out to the single again.
So we're back where we started now.
A bear hug.
Let's see where this goes, see where it goes, Even.
Yeah, that's that's tremendous Wrestling fall single again tremendous counter wrestling and tremendous position on behalf of Hummel they're both staying in a real tough but look the time it's ticking away and got away and now he's in on a leg.
Get that far into some super wrestling for about 30 to 40 seconds work on the part of both.
Wrestling wasn't that slick?
Isn't that an injury really nifty imagine Deanna has injury time out is he's complaining about his left knee That's the one he's got the knee pad on but Deanna's up over Hummel 5 to 1 and I believe that's the farthest that Perry Perry's been behind in quite a while.
Oh, it sure is.
But you know, those so much happened in about 40 seconds area, so it's just some super wrestling.
Maybe we'll get a chance to look at it here.
Some of this.
There he comes in on the start, the end when right near the end came in there on that on that single high cross, but then come up over the top of the back to finish it up just before the period end for the two point takedown.
Prior to that, of course, Hummel was Very effective on that high crotch single series, but was not able to make it work for the two.
Yeah, yeah.
He got part one, but not part.
That's right.
And Deanna did some super counter wrestling like Deanna.
He's back out, ready to go.
There's Perry Hummel.
Regardless of who wins this match, the fans have seen two excellent wrestlers.
I don't care what that score is going to be.
There's some super wrestling.
There's what happened with Hummel, Russell Schultz, The 7 to 4 Hummel was the first man to take Schultz down this year, and then Deanna was the second man.
You heard Deanna writing.
He'd like to get a little time here.
There's no riding time of the way to speak up.
What's to keep Hummel off his feet?
Battle Oh, I thought he was out almost.
Deanna is just looking so good in there on those chain wrestling maneuvers.
He he stayed at it.
He's a good, serious wrestler.
He has a lot of technique.
There's the one stand up escape.
My humble no riding time.
Five two.
It's Deanna by three.
2 minutes and 21 seconds left in the third period.
Again, bring you up to date on the stalling situation here.
We have a right to points have already been awarded Deanna for Hummel stalwart that one has gone to Hummel for Deanna stalling pay and that's what Deanna did to Schultz 14 eight and down to 11 left Yep heads up.
Good.
Neither man likes to shoot from that far out, but there's no choice here.
Really.
Broken work from arm throws head.
Chuck's body throws drop into the singles and doubles These two kids are both just I use the word technicians, but they really are.
They could put on a quite a clinic from the feet.
They both have so many good moves.
I mean at 40 oh oh just a counter Right.
But again Hollow had to make a move from somewhere.
He had to make a move and that was a super one.
That's beautiful for the fans to watch.
I'd say Deanna is giving a clinic on defensive wrestling here tonight and he's making those counter moves.
He's putting the kind of moves, some type of offense and the score, and that puts him out in front.
73723.
It's by for now the Hawks have a 12 to 16 lead you got nothing but three three decisions that have been three points for the team so far but four out of six have gone to Iowa humble against Deanna Perry and on the leg this is where Hummel he's in there if you get it locked up, this is where he was before Deanna countered.
You got that loose whizzer in there on Simmons now.
So you see Deanna look at the clock.
He sees he has 35 seconds left.
How could you get the other leg?
And so Deanna comes up even what a sense of balance he has out there.
And of course he he's in there now on Hummels head control in the head and that form over their 20 seconds.
Come on back.
That's the time left a four point lead for Mike Deanna over Perry Hummels Deanna's had the only two takedowns and both came out of situations where he at some point during the maneuvering was on the defense.
That's correct.
Almost over and that is for the second time this year.
Mike he got a decent chance at Curry Hollow this time by a score of seven three and it's Iowa 15th and Iowa sixth after £167.
Is the crowd gorgeous?
They say they're on their feet.
And here we go, £277 to Iowa State.
Right.
Top one record they gave him is.
But I'm up against that man right there, Eddie Barrick, the defending national champion.
Eddie.
And we asked him what his strategy was for wrestling Dave Allen tonight.
Well, the last three times the rest of them, he's taken down in the first period.
So I want to stop and turn the tables on him maybe and take him down instead.
Control the match more in the first period toward my way, the three matches before this, I've always beat them later on in the in the period first match exploded and then I put them in the first three.
But I basically I want to control the match more coming back for important and I'm open immediately on that single and panic was able to counteroffer as well as they went off the edge of the mat back in the middle neutral position early in the first period, 136 left in the first period.
Well, it seems from what we have seen and heard, that the only other man in the country in this in the class of, these two is Colin Kyle Ryan of Lehigh, who I believe in the last rankings is ranked number one because he did defeat Eddie Panic this year.
I believe that's.
Correct.
That's the only I believe that's the only loss he's had.
And then kill Ryan, by the way, while the boys were scrimmaging.
Here is a familiar one to people who remember there a warning against Alec Styles that 9 to 5 was a score kill.
Ryan won.
But there used to be an old heavyweight fighter.
The last Bareknuckle Heavyweight championship match was between John L. Sullivan and a man named Jake Kill Ryan.
And you're and column kill Ryan as his great great grandson.
Well, now, here.
I'm glad I learned that today.
Yes.
You won't go away empty Alan against Banach.
Alan Eleanor Head has had the warning for stalling.
There's no score.
Well, Vanek said that he wanted to keep away from that first pair of takedown.
30, 30 seconds to go.
In the first period.
Thus far, he's been able to do it.
They was going in for the cover and arm left duck under combination might have gone down into a single or whatever off of it, but he got no further.
Again, same result.
What about again?
You're looking at two of the best.
Those are the Iowa State cheerleaders.
First period ends with no score takes top.
Allen gets his choice.
He wants up.
All right, I said, come on down.
And I've stayed on the whistle.
He's a captain.
You remember back there at the beginning, he could pick where he wanted to be when the time for his match came.
That's correct.
I don't know if that entered his head.
Vanek is out a lot of power.
There's a lot of power.
That was just a seven second round.
Like to put a name on that particular maneuver, but it's kind of a strong end.
Stand up power move.
Yeah Iowa.
Iowa State, The Hawkeyes, 15 and the Cyclones six.
We're at 177.
Allen And Advantech is very physical, very strong.
Dave Allen is very strong and it makes real fine move.
But that actually has the power over a guy that's and Allen went out and got off balance.
He was on his heels there.
He dropped it into a heel single pick.
He may turn that into two and there it is.
I believe he has not yet.
And Manek is awfully strong stuff.
See what happens.
That's nothing happening.
But I have a lot of time left in our system.
You'll have to count him and work up on him.
Shoulder up on him.
The stalemate call.
And I think that Harold Nichols has got to come over and have a conversation with the official about that position.
So what is this man going to take down there as long as he got control?
The other guy still in the crotch, no control stabbing, like how three guys, I guess you heard the interchange, but nonetheless, no takedown.
One, the nothing is a score back blades on an escape here at the beginning of the second period and we have a minute 40 left Dave Allen, a senior for Iowa State and he backs only a sophomore, quoted, I got you all your offensive set.
That's a warning against Bennett.
So we're even in that department.
That's right.
Both boys and now had the warning for stalling.
You know, sometimes I'm sure a fan who is not real knowledgeable about wrestling, when they hear us talk about all the good moves these boys have and how powerful strong they are, get around.
Why isn't something happening?
But I have to realize they are respecting each other's abilities and a little miscue here or there off the base balance if you wish.
Here, there.
We'll set up a maneuver for one of the other wrestlers and consequently a takedown.
Four or five point moves out of bounds.
Oh, boy, that's That's just a little thinking about that one right out of the wood.
Yes, I think the head looks like maybe the head or something hit up in the floor.
We'll see here on the replays.
There was a microphone out there, too.
Hope he didn't hit that.
But let's see.
Let's see.
Well, there's the microphone.
I hope he missed it.
He did?
I think he did.
Yeah.
His head goes down, right?
Looks like maybe.
Yes.
Well, he'd never hit it.
Maybe the shoulder or something.
Well, he's had a bad back this year.
I don't know if that was a strain on something that's been sore.
He's ready to go in any case.
Here you go.
Manic leads one to nothing.
Each man has been warned.
Allen is in quickly on the leg, the single to the high crotch.
He's got to lift with it.
Now, Banneker course, he's the whizzer on him and chest in on him.
45 seconds left for the second third.
He's going to have to get a trip with it, get it out in front, get a lift higher.
Larry.
Thank you.
Did that for to do it.
And it's Allen's first point.
So he gets the take and leads 2 to 1.
But Maddox immediately out to two, 29 seconds left In the second period, scores two to go.
I think the place for Dave to wrestle it is on his feet.
20 seconds.
That's where I think he has the better chance.
Dave Allen has wrestled antibiotics three times.
Well, is a nice takedown.
Very nice.
He got him awfully good.
Double hips in there, real close.
Got the two and it's 4 to 2 in favor of Bannock with just the there nothing left in the second period and here comes the move Now notice he shook that arm gets in there deep right here Allen is coming to head in there right next to the hip and pressure Dave to the mat.
And when I indicated earlier that Dave's best place to wrestle him is on his feet is that that's where Dave has generally scored the best is on his feet with the in with it.
But at this point at least four two on that takedown and this is where Manik is very tough on top He's a strong powerful wrestler.
We're at the edge of the mat now.
You don't want to turn it on and to carelessly pick up, you get in that bear hug down.
He goes back down.
No escape out of bounds situation.
He had to lock in on him for that He wants isn't it that.
That's right.
He gets a lock and gets a trip with it of some kind of to the back you go turn in and lock because he's a pinner.
You got that in your arm Bard.
Pretty tough right now.
You notice on the wrist scissoring that near leg, taking it out away from him, keeping the base out from underneath.
It puts a lot of pressure on in your shoulder through Dave is trying to get the feet up with some kind of a shoulder roll straight down and it's 4 to 3 now Banach 45 seconds of writing time 12 for Alan one minute net writing time is needed before the one point is achieved for either opponent.
Each man has been warned and he got hostile.
It's they're headed for the crowd, but he's back.
2 minutes to 2 minutes to go.
177.
They couldn't make the move.
There you see Barnett countering.
And if you shoot from too far out against him, he can make you make you sorry.
Alan's been very active on his feet once he has a minute and a half now they're back is so physical, he keeps his legs back well out of the way and able to protect them very well.
Oh, there they've down on that leg.
Go, boy.
Anything can happen from this position.
Barnett's got a pretty good lock on the body and this got a stalemate.
And it was good counter wrestling, good offensive wrestling.
They've had a whole lot of that leg on the bottom there.
That's right.
Well, all it was worth, we got to stalemate until made being simply a situation where either boy could gain an advantage one minute without forfeiting the position he was in and giving up some points.
We're in the last minute hundred and 77 Miss 8 a.m.
I was sitting Alan is in on the in the leg trying to turn into something oh oh some power a lot of power.
He got in there pretty tough on that that that would work on most people.
Yes.
I was about to say, Dave, you can't get much deeper than that.
30 seconds left to go.
30 000.
That's like Alan, this guy playing, he doesn't want to get locked in on them.
20 seconds to go double.
You'll see Banach holding on, holding on, holding on, holding on.
No points yet because Alan still has the legs.
Now they got him and there it is at the end.
Six, three and excellent match.
That was the one that I like.
A super match.
Just a super match.
Two excellent wrestlers.
Alan Russell.
Tremendous Offensively tonight without question Fenech did some super counter wrestling.
Well I'll tell you that gives the Hawkeyes Eddie Bionic knew he was in a match there.
It was a tough one and it's Iowa 18 and Iowa State six as we go to £190.
And I think maybe that might, in spite of the loss, indicate to Dave out again that he can go in there with that cross.
He had control.
But now we're we're having a little chat again here at the bench.
A senior on what Harold Nichols thought was a takedown that Alan should have had for the look at it so far away and wasn't given for it.
Don Draper from Dahlonega, Georgia.
He's pretty well in control of things out there.
That's not good.
Yes, he is.
He takes charge now.
£190.
That's it.
It's 18 to 6.
It would take two pins here by Iowa State to tie the meet.
Good luck to him.
Iowa can't lose.
That's pretty tough orders right now.
And it's Pete Bush looking for revenge against John Forsey of Iowa State, who has in the past few weeks been rated as high as number one.
But in his last five matches, he's lost three and had two draws.
He's had some physical ailments.
He's said he had the bronchitis last week.
Yes.
Whether, you know, the flu combination of several things.
And they're kind of hoping maybe he's gotten rid of the bigger share of it.
But Pete Bush wants to go out there and even work inside to score.
He's ranked number five and forces number four.
Well, you always look for the unexpected in the individual matches.
And I think we had them tonight, too.
They sure did, because it started right off at 118 with Barry Davis, his big win over Michael Kozy.
And then Lenny Zaleski beat Dave Brown for the first time at 142.
The only win so far been for the Cyclones have been by Jim Gibbons at 134.
He came from behind to beat Mark Zino and Nate Carr, who beat Scott Frosinone 9 to 4 with a warning against caution, calling of caution.
Remember last week he had against Ed Carr Thomas He had lost already two penalty points at the end of the first period for inactivity.
No, a minute left duck under by forcing so didn't get around on it to get a lift and to go off the edge of the mat.
It's one of his pet moves all day with this then to get in there.
Pretty good on it.
Now he dropped down in there and a kind of a Nepal single high crotch series push as far as his leg in the air thus far, of course, he's been able to stave it off, but Pete's pulling him back to the mat, hoping he can get a trip with it.
A lift, perhaps.
You got him on if he gets a lift off him, but he might be able to put him down.
But for sure, he's still counting.
And it's even, again, 27, very humble on the left.
He was defeated tonight by Mike Diana for the second time this year.
Seven, two, three and a heck of a match for the connoisseurs.
I'm sure they're just getting some real super wrestling out here tonight.
Part of the wins and losses has been some great effort.
They've got a tremendous exhibition of talent.
6 seconds are left in the first credits for C against Bush.
No score and the first period ends for she was already one.
That's Brian Neal.
We don't know yet whether he'll be the heavyweight or whether de Hosenball will hard for Iowa State.
They both I announced yesterday at San Gabriel.
He's got to be happy.
Yes, he's sitting pretty, pretty good right now with 1816 lead force.
He starts the second period up.
John generally is a tough writer.
Of course, he's rangy just as Pete is, but he rides tough on top guys up the, arms come down.
Right.
One Iowa field house the night of February 21st, just about a month and a half after that first dual meet between these two teams you recall here for she had some 4 minutes, I think, in almost 41, 47 seconds writing time on Edgar Thomas.
If you recall, when they went through the feat, he was only down one point and was really in the match, ended up on his back.
It was all over.
That's Dave Osborne, who is the other candidate for heavyweight here.
And the way the two boys are looking, I'm not sure that that Carol Nichols has told either one of them which one is going to go.
Know for she against Bush peaks in Iowa.
Boy, as you know he's from Davenport assumption that year he won the national at the state championship.
You could see that he had all the makings.
He was strong and rangy.
And he's turned out just to be that.
When you're in the room with the two backs and Dan Gable, the coach and a few other guys, you're going to get tough after a while or wish you were.
I think you're absolutely right to 15 left in the second period in 50 seconds riding time.
Of course, he has a it needs ten more seconds to get the net one minute time advantage for that.
Now red fast.
He starts again on top.
Bush has been able to get to his feet, but he's not been able to get free.
John's locked, locked in there, pretty tired.
He's trying to get a lift or a trip or some kind of put him back to the mat when you get 10 minutes.
Right in time.
Now come this gentleman.
Let's go.
Let's go.
There was the what happened in the third period that gave Oklahoma the meet over Iowa State.
That's right.
Spin 7 minutes, 2 seconds.
And he was in the match up to that point.
He went in on that what looked like the high crotch of the duck under Morales and Edgar Thomas sits out there with those under hooks and waits for that kind of thing.
And then he pancaked.
John Fawcett And that was it.
A minute 53.
Let's go.
Come on down right there.
Two quick bottom and we'll put caution on.
Let's push false start caution for the referee, blew the whistle, scooped.
Yes, of course, he has to bring him down.
And I don't think he was doing it fast enough.
And that's the point.
I was going to caution it's top man's the responsibility to put the defensive wrestler back to the mat.
He's got to make an attempt to put him back down.
That was a point Bush leads one that nothing was going on.
Closing minute 39 left in the second period.
Come on now Red.
First time they met, it was five 2 to 4.
She was the winner once again.
Four.
She had to take him down, but he's not able to get push up.
He's making an attempt to take him down, but beats having a lot to do with that.
He's put out.
He's got good balance on his feet and he's trying to get the hand split to get the one.
Getting a lot of encouragement from head coach Dan Gable and assistant Jay Roberson.
At 24 it's been forces ride Oh which is not before of course he got one minute and 42nd but 26 seconds ready time however Jack back to the feet this takedown is a big one for she of course doesn't want to get four points behind and Bush would like to get four points ahead.
Needless to say, that's a penalty point.
One point against 40.
Next time he gets called, it's for two points.
And John's digging a hole for himself here.
He's got to get on her knees.
He's got to get underneath and go for the takedown.
Singles are doubles.
I think he can get a use a touch and go set up and score.
But both boys like the upper body tie up 35 seconds left.
Second period, they let him back.
30 seconds here.
John Roberts asking for still let 40 back to the center.
Still not too much happening here.
Bush tries to lock up no man or she is simply not getting out of there.
And how he's reaching he's doing a lot of reaching there from his feet, not getting in penetration.
He's not getting good position.
High tide.
6 seconds.
Our last quote, Iowa State has scored only 16 points so far.
They've won two matches out of 34 and 150.
John is just not finishing his moves.
Of course, there it is.
It's three nothing at the end of the second period, Bush over 40 like wrestling.
Now Bush comes up to the security a minute and 46 seconds is the amount of riding time that Bush would have to make up, Actually, if he took 40 seconds off and 46 seconds off, he would erase the potential punch.
But he's not I don't think he's going ride the john that long, but one never knows there in one point shape.
Stand up turn in 15 second right now Pete dropped down in that single tied off the match it's three two on Bush over four she at £190 Johnson Johnson to get more intense or got to go after him Same with Pete.
In order to salvage a win here, he's got to get more intensity and both boys got a little bit more offense, a little more aggressive there.
Pete dropped down in on a single.
But again, they're telegraphing that move to the outside and not too difficult counter.
No warnings against Bush so far far she is the one in the hole and he's the one that's got to be moving at this point.
The about 2 minutes left.
Quick center men.
Give it 2 minutes to when you're down 3 to 1, you better be moving in and fast.
He has one point for an escape.
He has been penalized, wanted and penalized twice.
He's not been able to get under with the authority that he was doing, let's say, two or three weeks ago.
That's Correct.
And Pete Bush has made an escape and had to get through it two penalty points.
So we haven't had any offensive points so far.
Nothing to show on either side, really, in that respect.
Minute and a half left.
Neither boy is putting any thing together here right now.
Like that's a warning against Bush.
What is this going on?
But he's got to get moving, too, because another point, a penalty point against him would would tie the match, actually, because there's a riding time going for Bush for 40.
It just appears to me he could drop in on a single or something.
But John doesn't seem to want to get in there and feature kind of tying up in there push a little.
But he's not really intent with going after a takedown either.
Both boys are tying to the front side and not able to get underneath for a takedown.
We're less than a minute away from this period.
Yeah.
Than him, Sautter said.
Look at that.
Right in time, Clark said.
You got to get moving, so I'm going to beat Bush.
Bush leaves 3 to 1 little Armdrag tried, but not really much.
A 40 again did not go under.
He's not finishing his moves.
He got in there but wouldn't didn't finish his move.
So don't want 30 seconds left.
I believe Hosenball is going to be the heavyweight.
He's the one who's warming up and then goes Bush on the leg with only 25 seconds left to go, 2010, nine, 9 seconds left to go.
And it's going to go to I'll it's another win for the Hawkeyes riding time Point does go at a four point and it's Bush three and 42 three the winner of three two pick Bush and it's now the Hawkeyes 21 and a second six.
As we go to the heavyweight match and the Hawkeyes, steamroller has won four straight.
No, it's gone right through the front.
158 2 to 1 nine eight.
And there is little Barrett, the heavyweight for Iowa.
This is his chance.
He wants a little revenge here because this man, Ames, against Dave Hosenball, was the decider.
And you all know what happened there.
When I was involved, I got to pin while trailing nine to nothing and Iowa State won.
But you see Bennett going right after him again.
Yes.
He'd like to make revenge over that last showing inside the home country where he would like to see when he was well ahead and then got Penn to now he's got a pretty good bar in there.
He's got the takedown.
He's going for the boys at the half level.
He's got a deep got the outside leg.
There's an up there, almost our shoulders still up a little bit.
But he's got a whole minute and 17 seconds to flip.
Got a lot of time here.
Lot of time that I'm stressed out.
But to get that far shoulder down, he's going to score in the fall.
He's got a 5.4, three point move without question.
We've got to get that hitman half Nelson to really get the head up off the mat.
Give him for bridging the gap for that shoulder down.
I'm taking a little earlier.
Okay.
It was worth a minute and 22 seconds.
Harris The only match of the night that wasn't a three point decision.
It's up to.
And a little revenge for Lou.
Back.
And it's Lou.
Back in a minute.
And 28 seconds.
The winner by fall over.
Dave Hosenball and the Hawkeyes.
Roll it up.
A lot of revenge in this.
Their last duel meet of the season heading toward the tournament.
The final score is the Hawkeyes, 27 and Iowa State six.
There you see a lot of happy Hawkeyes tonight.
Oh, yeah, 12,750 people here in this auditorium, this big old Iowa Fieldhouse.
Where been?
Lots of noise made.
There's Lou.
There are the happy Iowa mascots.
They're going to meet again these two teams in the Nationals year and never know who's gonna be ready.
They're here tonight.
It was definitely Iowa ready to go and absolutely in charge.
Well, let's look back on what happened here.

Well, it's been another great season for wrestling here on APB.
At its fifth consecutive year, we've had an opportunity to see many of the state's college wrestling programs, not only Iowa State and Iowa, but also Drake and you and I.
And right now, the end of our season here, we'd like you to sit back and relax and enjoy some of those memories with us that and and and and and get and and and and and and and and and bye bye, she says.
