On the other side of the mat, Iowa head coach Tom Brands is seeking his fourth consecutive national title.
But graduation took a heavy toll on the Hawkeyes, who returned just one national champion from last year's star studded team.
Iowa State battles Iowa on College wrestling next from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
It's a classic interstate showdown between the Iowa State cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Tim Johnson.
Welcome to college wrestling and also welcome my broadcast partners, both national champion wrestlers and coaches Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
And guys, last year it was number one versus number two.
This year it's Iowa, number eight, Iowa State number 21.
But the rivalry still as big as ever.
Let's talk about Iowa State, Jim.
When you were coaching at Iowa State, you coached Kevin Jackson.
Well, I had the pleasure of coaching Kevin Jackson, great guy.
You know, he took over the reins of the program last year, 17 and two.
But this year is totally different.
He's totally in a rebuilding job.
And, you know, he's going to have to rely on some senior leadership this year.
And John Reeder, John Rader takes over, moves up to one £74.
Not a lot of success in the room.
John Reeder has to be the guy that the Cyclones look to for leadership on that team.
Well, also rebuilding the Iowa program, who better to talk about it than Dan Gable?
And Dan, you coach Tom Brands.
Well, I don't think he looks at anything is rebuilding.
It's like whatever was last year and how good we did if we were the national champs and we even if we graduated everybody, we want to be the national champs again.
And he's led by Matt McDonagh and he's been around only through his dad, Mike McDonough, who I coached back in the old days, but nothing better than having a national champ as a leader.
Well, your date yourself, But this whole rivalry dates itself and we know looking back, you can expect the unexpected.
It's Iowa versus Iowa State next on college wrestling.
Welcome back to Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Let's take a look at tonight's matchups for the Iowa Iowa State rivalry.
We'll start at 197 where Ward will go against locked out.
They drew to determine where they're going to start.
Then either given Gibson or Simonsson for the Iowa State against raising them.
Iowa then at 125, Hunter versus McDonough, 133 Jones versus Moore, Ramos at 141 drew in for Iowa State versus Bollwage.
Then we'll move up to 149 where Carr for the Cyclones goes against cheering for Iowa at 157 Weatherman versus Saint John, 165 Sorenson versus Kerr at 174, Reeder versus Ethan Lofthouse and at 184 Schaefer versus Gamble.
Oh, we've got a great crowd here tonight.
That's Mike McCormack, Virginia Beach, Virginia, one of the top officials in the nation.
He's our top official.
He's going to be assisted by Kurt Frost.
And we're starting at £197, the Cyclone Jerome Ward.
He's a junior.
He's ranked number 12.
He's nine and two on the year.
He's in the cyclone uniform.
And then the senior Luke Lofthouse, he's ranked number 13.
He's four.
No, this year, so closely ranked.
It should be a good match, guys.
Definitely.
And it's usually one that, you know, they probably don't usually start the meets off with because they drove.
But at the same time, it looks probably pretty even match up based on the ratings.
And as so far, neither athlete really has made any big moves and they're just kind of feeling each other out.
So, yeah, Jerome Ward kind of broke out last year at this meeting, and when he beat Phil Kenny, that was big surprise to everybody.
184 Now he's up at 187 or £197.
And, you know, you just kind of tell the the styles are, you know, who's going to be able to get to the corner.
Right now, both guys are kind of wrestling on the track, so to speak.
Railroad tracks.
You kind of draw a line between each other's speeds.
And they we'll just ended up being a straight line is who's going to be able to get to the corner ready get a good shot off as far as start in the meet.
I don't think this is a match where you're going to see unbelievable action takedown, takedown, takedown, whereas it's going to be more of a controlled type of winning situation.
So don't turn your dials, though, because they're going to be a lot of matches later on.
I think it'll have both that type of action.
And it's the 77th meeting.
Iowa leads 58 to 16 with two ties.
I was one the last six speedy guys.
I got hurt in the opening.
Iowa State has not won since 2004.
Luke Lofthouse, the senior he has a nephew that's breaking out as a Hawkeye, a freshman.
Ethan Lofthouse.
Knock it off.
Who will be at 174, which will be our second to the last match tonight as we go 197 heavyweight, then back to 125 and on up the ladder, it looks like Lofthouse like to work off that inside bicep tie.
It almost looks like both these athletes start to get to the back leg.
LOFTHOUSE Drop and level over.
But that wasn't so much competition for you.
Okay, experience wise, actually, Iowa State has experience in this in this match up here.
Yeah.
This is a match that Iowa State has to be competitive in this me that's a really a must win for the Cyclones.
I heard Kevin Jackson say something pretty interesting right there.
He said, don't work so hard and day.
What he's talking about here is he didn't want to muscle up and push the man off the mat.
He wanted to execute techniques.
And that's exactly what he got from Jerome Ward right there with the two point takedown.
Well, I lost Cape State scores, the first takedown in Tarver here up against the Hawkeyes.
But it was the edge of the mat a little bit.
Lofthouse got push in region and long arms and a double leg just kind of sucked it right up and put him down.
They go back to the middle now where Ward will be on top and he scored on this shot right here just kept his head up, kept driving down in he circle pretty well right there as well.
Didn't is dry the man off the mat he used tried and tried to get to the corner all the way through and ended up with a takedown and you could tell that he stepped out of bounds and went back in.
It doesn't matter.
Does it matter?
Because the mats as big as that with every part of your body?
Yeah.
Any part of your body of one guy's arm is doing a pretty good job.
Right.
And building some right in time.
You're hanging with him.
Obviously.
A very knowledgeable crowd here.
Partizan crowd down.
Okay, now, this is really important time right here.
5 seconds left.
You know, the ward can stay in the top position.
Two over lead is a heck of a lot better than two one.
He's got 46 seconds.
All right.
In time as well.
Sets it up three.
I might be out.
No, I didn't give it to him.
Wow.
I tell you what, that link, those fingertips kept that from happening.
It was so close.
No, Kevin Jackson, close to a hair is yelling at the score tables.
They neck at the start.
And you think it's not tense when I was dating Iowa wrestles and it's a very important beginning meet for both these teams but for now the eighth ranked Iowa Hawkeyes versus the 21st ranked Iowa State cyclones.
Well, Loftus did a good job right there because he jumped the whistle just a little bit.
And, you know, that's a nice, you know, risk reward situation.
And he's getting that minute right in time.
He's not putting his feet to the mat quick enough and strong enough that way.
And you got the one that two things going on there.
There was a warning against Jerome Ward and then the escape.
So kind of a double whammy.
It's 2 to 1, but Ward from Iowa State has been warned for stalling.
Yeah, it's a little bit of a ticky tack file right there.
A warning right there.
10 seconds into the period, rarely see that higher level.
Hey, lock us down as a single.
And whether he can get it up or not drop.
He does get a nice job with his grip.
Right.
He's keeping the weight down there.
Got to get the ankle up.
If he doesn't get the ankle up, he's not going to score here Big Matt yet.
Those are big Matt.
And he's actually, I think the way they're you know, they need to call the rule.
They need to change this rule to call a clean the hole because but it but it's not not the rule yet.
It's not the rule and they're looking at that for the future, you know, like in another year maybe.
So it's just one of those things.
Well in lock flinging them at that thing or what.
Right.
You know, you got to kind of kick towards the center because they're looking at freestyle instead of going to stepping out and losing a point, you got to transition to make it really, you know, a big change.
You don't want to go from one extreme to another extreme.
And so if you want to step out of bounds and lose that point, that's what freestyle is.
And, you know, we need to do things appropriately and make sure that we're not jumping from one style to the other right now.
LOFTHOUSE has really picked up the advantage here.
He's really working the head hard and one is really kind of allowing him to do that, slowed the pace, the match down worse.
Got to become much more active right here.
He's going to give up a cheap stall call again.
And, you know, you take a look at his upper body.
He's just kind of loose with it.
He's not really grabbing anything.
He's not really improving his position.
There he goes.
Lofthouse is really okay with his heavy hands.
Well, this really have a flashy shot, but he knows how to hand fight.
He's getting him to lean to and giving him a chance to get this the the setup.
But it's going into the third period and it's the end of the second period.
The score 2 to 1.
Lofthouse did get an escape after that first period takedown for Ward 2 to 1.
Ward will choose down to begin the third period and a Lofthouse, who seems that the pace is going his way.
And Jim, you talk about pace a lot.
Well, pace is more important score, I think, particularly in the first 5 minutes of the match.
And the pace has gone Lofthouse his way.
But we'll see if he can take advantage of that.
But that's how important at the end of the first period was.
And that five second flurry right there would be too obvious.
Yeah.
You know, down that you know and he got rid of the riding time right now.
So that's what Lofthouse his purpose was was to ride long enough to eliminate the riding time advantage Ward did have.
So it's under a minute riding time in Lofthouse in on the single now a lot of athletic ability being shown right there by ward because stop stop, stop for a minute 35 and look like he was beat.
Your heart was going to double, but he did a great job of getting his legs back there.
Yeah, he did.
And he took Lofthouse completely out of the hole, never to go back to the center after that potentially dangerous call by Mike McCormick, the official.
It's 3 to 1.
Jerome Ward from Iowa State out in front of Lofthouse, win the first match of the evening at 197 in the big Iowa state.
Iowa meet here from Carver Hawkeye.
Way too early for Moore to shut down here.
He's probably going to get a shot off on his own to show that he's the referee.
He's still in this match.
LOFTUS He really has to continue to stay heavy on the head and get that same shot he had at the edge of the match.
He just went 30 seconds without any movement.
And, you know, that's not something you do when you're behind.
There's a counter shot by you're not going to get the shot, you know, you're not going to get the stolen call.
And he won't make a difference anyway.
What?
He had him on the line there.
Yeah, he had him on the line and he just well, particularly if you can't get him out of the small circle, know words right there.
Right there in the small dark circle.
That's an interesting call.
There it is.
I'm sorry, Mary.
I don't know.
I was against that.
Great.
Okay, well, State gives the scores now.
3 to 2.
Three.
That was a second stall in which is the point for Loftus.
What if he shoots three or four or five, six times?
He could hit him again.
But but, you know, he's got to have two hands on the leg there.
He missed it.
I don't think they'll call it now, but he's really got to worry.
Oh, wow.
One second to go call it.
Oh, it's an overtime match.
Wow.
Oh, I'll tell you what else Kevin Jackson says.
I knew it'd be tough to had a little bit.
Boy, Hey, I got the takedown.
You want to walk that one?
Well.
Oh, no, I kind of says it all.
So here we go.
It's over time.
A one minute period where any score even stalling any score?
Well, I mean, you know what?
I'm amazed that seems to have the more explosive move when he does it, since it is it is sudden victory here.
You know, I think he's going to try to go over now, that wasn't quite as explosive as that first one night.
Lofthouse has definitely taken a lot out of him here.
He's in a position to score here.
He didn't have much in the tank guy.
He's got a guy who keeps his head up in the scramble.
It looks like Ward has the ankle and he's dropped his head.
Lofthouse is keeping his head up.
His head is high.
He can't go there.
It is.
Just take that.
No, no, no.
If he didn't get it, no points yet.
And there's a two in an overtime, 5 to 3 win for Jerome Ward from Iowa State.
Lofthouse did a nice job of scrambling right there.
But again, the guy who keeps his head up high will win that scramble.
And you saw where he's able to get Warren was able to get his head on the mat.
That made the difference to right here head up, hips down follows with the skill to the leg.
It's three zero jacks.
He's outside Iowa.
Kevin Jackson, as you just said, Jim is very upset with the call of that match, but it does go his way.
Finally, there's coach John Jackson is we've got Kyle Simonsson, the junior for Iowa State, 13 wins.
He leads the team with 13 wins.
He's 13 and one versus Blake raising the junior from Iowa.
Let's go racing from New Hampton, Iowa state champion at New Hampton, Kyle Simonsson from Al Gony.
So a couple of northern Iowa powerhouse wrestling programs going up against each other.
Those guys run around a lot of Iowa wrestlers on this, Iowa high school wrestlers on this Iowa team.
Not so with the Iowa State team stands hunched over, stands at the right arm in Not yet anyway.
I think Jackson Rudolph would like to see that.
Yeah, I think it takes him a little time.
That's the difference between the two programs in transition going from Cale Sanderson to to Kevin Jackson.
And, you know, a lot of you having success over a long period of time is, is is having a commitment to the in-state kids.
Read the Russians give me the same goal that Kyle that both these heavyweights are juniors to the art said go girl your shot said go snap dangle run the run the shot run around the shot.
Simonsson here at Iowa State doing a nice job of basically getting to the corner and on a shot hasn't really attempted it.
There's this shot hasn't got quite to the edge but a corner but he's got his hands locked and he's lifting up on raising do a nice job of getting his hips in comes with a big step.
If he continues to drive through, he can get points right here, stays up with the leg.
Nice job by racing boy.
He's got some strong hips for those hips.
Are they bouncing Nelson?
So I just he's got some long arms there, though.
Yeah.
This is tough position here for Simonsson.
Yeah.
I mean, if you want to get around him, you got to go back and get an arm off.
You got to get an arm off.
And so you've got a way to go around him.
And if he gets the arm off then he can go around him.
But he hasn't done a very good job of reaching back to pull that arm off.
He's got the leg, but but he's got one off now.
But he's now he's in a position to stalemate.
So I'll be let go.
That ankle that's a stalemate and there's no score.
He has the advantage with the ankle and it wasn't able to knock Simonsson over to his hip.
Normally you see that happens.
So that's good job.
By Simonsson while he's 13 and one.
So he's yeah, he's beaten the majority of the heavyweights that he's wrestled so far this year.
These two met each other three years ago when they were freshmen and it was a one point victory, three 2 to 4, raising over Simonsson when they wrestled in an open tournament.
No raising but ready to shoot here.
Tell what he likes, do put a lot of pressure on the head.
He goes straight into the man.
You take a look at that, his legs and hips, very powerful end of the first period.
The score knotted.
It zeros the team score three zero.
Iowa State over Iowa after Ward a win by ward over Lofthouse beginning match 197.
We started a 197 second match of the evening heavyweight.
And then we'll go back to 125 and work our way up when Carver Hawkeye Arena got a little tired.
It's like a great crowd.
11, 12,000 at least here tonight, maybe more.
I'll tell you what, doesn't make any difference what the Hawkeyes are ranked.
If the crowd is going to show up, they and I don't think the weather's that great tonight either.
So once again, with the game and with the get go come up doing a good job of carrying the weight.
Now, keeping the weight on the hips and picking up an ankle and keeping the weight on the head.
And now he's near Risdon.
Yeah, so is it Go right, right here.
He's just right here to go all that, you know, let's be fair here.
Kevin Jackson on the offense He was a little upside first man three stolen calls to put him in overtime so he's trying to he's trying to he got to be a little careful you know might work opposite you know he'd just get the referee mad at him a little bit.
You don't want to be overboard, but at the same time, you know, he probably probably felt like he got hammered a little bit at first, that first match, you know, just because it's not in his home, you know?
Yeah.
And he wants to make sure that the referee knows that he's watching real horror out there to protect your guys.
You want to get the call, You're out there protecting your program.
Now.
It's well within the bounds of what he was about.
But I have it right here.
I think he's going to talk him into a stall call here are warning pretty soon, but don't know yet.
I mean, the one who's who stalling?
Well, the top guy, but they call it stalemate.
Yeah.
Come on, guys.
Now is a good call there in an opportunity restart there's Eric Blocker in the background there the two time national champion for the cyclones and just joined the staff and I think that's a real good call on Jackson's part don't you Jim?
Well, Eric is a guy who's been around a very mature man.
And you know, if the athletes come in to the Iowa State program, had the experience that he had while he was here, came in on a pretty much a partial scholarship and ended up as a two time national champion and had the third place finish.
Would be really nice job for the program, isn't he coming at the same time as he's got a nephew?
Maybe?
Yeah.
His nephew is also in the program.
Just came in this year forever.
Yeah.
Now, Senator Grimes.
Well, the end of the second period doesn't give him any score yet.
It's zero zero, but 2 minutes of riding time gathered by the Iowa heavyweight Blake Racing.
He'll go down the top.
Go.
Kyle Simonsson, the junior heavyweight for the Cyclones, will come on top and he'll try to.
I'd like to throw things on top.
I'd like to mention Dave Walker.
You.
We're talking about Eric Walker.
Better watch that leg to break his knee.
This is a really dangerous situation in David to get up on top, though.
Nice job.
Oh, he's heavyweight.
Russell has a good set of legs.
Yeah, he cross-body ride.
Probably not on top of raising wins the first battle, but flips off.
But there they are.
He's still got his hands knocked off.
He got it.
He's been there before.
Yes, he's been there before.
We saw him.
He got to stay back.
There it is.
He broke it.
Hips finally broken one.
And the writing time remains.
Racing's all raising, is trying to go around him without putting weight on the shoulder, one zero pulling his arm out.
He's definitely come off needs to work on on that go behind there but he's wrestling the guy that's used to this position I can tolerate.
He don't want to go down to his belly though and with the angle to lose an angle there.
He got back up there.
He got back up and got his single leg error.
But this is not bad position here for Simonsson here with the leg in, right.
I'm sure he's been there before because he went right around in there.
So stalemate, there's no points.
They'll go back to neutral.
It's one zero by the escape by raising his Travis Poulsen and he's got a quick still got right in time you got 21 seconds of Ryan time over a minute 44.
So he's going to have to take him down quickly.
Otherwise, it still be a 40 seconds left in the third period in regulation time, it's one zero.
Iowa's racing out in front.
No stalling calls at all.
There's a single there.
Simonsson will stay in on the leg, but they're close to out of bounds.
They called out of bounds by the official Mike McCormack.
Tom Brandes on top of his heavyweight in courage, Janine.
And that was his go to shot that low single, right?
You're going to go for it again?
Yeah.
20 seconds.
That time he got squashed instead of getting it Didn't get the setup.
Just the edge of the mat actually helped him last time.
Don't wait up.
Stalemate.
Stalemate.
We go to the center again.
We've got the right reason.
Protecting a10 lead.
12 seconds left.
Something's got to happen fast for Simonsson.
It's a good time to go the other side.
Oh, I tell you, I think I hit him.
I hit ratio.
So what's the difference between the last match in this match?
Well, it probably was a little bit longer between the calls.
The winner.
The way that was great was time he had done that wins 1020 over time to not the team score.
So with that after two matches the score is high all three three and Iowa State three and we'll be back with more college wrestling in just a moment.
Why Welcome back to Partner Hockey Arena, where it's all knotted at threes between the cyclones and the Hawkeyes.
And now we're at 125 sophomore Patrick Hunter for the Iowa State Cyclones and sophomore Matt McDonagh for the Hawkeyes.
Hunter from South Plainfield, New Jersey.
He was a national junior college champion at Iowa Central, transferred to Iowa State, had a Big Ten in his first match at Hilton earlier this year.
Matt McDonagh All he did as a freshman was win an NCAA title.
He's the lone all-American NCAA champion back in the lineup for the Hawkeyes.
He's the leader and he's only a sophomore.
He's from Lenoir, where he was a three time state champion.
He's quite a story, you know, winning a national championship as a freshman and not really a highly recruited athlete.
I mean, obviously he had some success being a three time national champion, but that just got he gets better and better and better, very disciplined, great conditioning, better with a better head to the outside single leg finishers in the country.
He gets in on your leg.
I'd like to know what his percentages of finishing is going to be.
Very high, 85, 90%.
And you talked about getting better and better as the match goes on.
He's just got to he's got a tank on his back is well-conditioned and he's done the cut, the weight cut.
So it's so discipline in his weight cut because it's all he's big out there.
Got to standing right here.
All right, let's go.
Stepping up.
He's he's very good at getting away from the weight when he's in on a shot.
He just does not get there and use any strength at all.
He uses all like keeping away from the weight and cuts that corner very well.
He stays away from the weight.
And with that in mind, he usually ends up coming around and he cuts Hunter and lets him get one to go back to his feet, try to work another takedown, Matt McDonough out in front 2 to 1 with that escape for Hunter go, go.
Wow.
Now he comes head to the outside again, the leg lock, just as long as the right amount of pressure and up the turf.
But it's on the edge.
There's a potential pinning situation is going to go out of bounds.
4 to 1 the score, two takedowns, early minutes, six left in the first period.
McDonagh from Iowa out in front, 4 to 1, it's tied 3 to 3.
The team score.
We started at £197 where Iowa State's ward won in overtime time that over Luke Lofthouse and then Blake racing for Iowa at heavyweight Luke John a close to zero win over Kyle Simonsson from Iowa State that's where we're at and McDonagh after another escape gets his third takedown here in the first period.
Yeah you know see this Iowa State matchup of course the national finals last year was Andrew Long from Iowa State against McDonagh White rolling through Nice job of getting out of that Dunne is going to be tough on him all day but those were some fun matches They were long not not in the line.
Scores of just some discipline issues and Kevin Kevin Jackson going to missing but he's in this to develop the young man on and off the mat and so it's tough not to have long in there and Hunter's just in a survival mode right now.
Yeah yeah that's that's the unfortunate thing.
And not being able to see a good athlete in this venue, this is what you train all your life for.
You watch these matches.
Growing up is a high schooler, a junior high wrestler.
And not to be out here competing against the best is a you know sad commentary 62 at the end of the first period that's the lead.
Matt McDonagh, the defending NCAA champion this week has gone down.
I don't know if you mentioned it, but oh, here we go, guys.
What, what is the status with Andrew Long?
I don't know anybody.
There's not a lot being said about it.
No, that being said, yeah, not we don't know if he's in school or I believe he's in school, you know, since he's been in front of up.
But again, those those battles were just epic.
You know, McDonagh came up on him but there was there was very high level wrestling going on all the way through that seven minute match.
Your Ty Hunter, 6 to 3, another escape for Hunter, a over minute 30 left in the second period.
McDonagh had three early takedown degrees.
There's this fourth up.
You notice it wasn't really the first effort.
The second effort is about the third and fourth effort that McDonagh made right there that actually got him the takedown, got him to lean.
And so it's one of those push and pull type of setups, but nothing was there until about the fourth set up.
And then he kind of fell down the head coach here and his brother Terry Brandes.
There's Mike Zedek on the other side, Tom and Terry, Brother Combo.
Tom's looking for his fourth NCAA team title in a row.
They've won three straight the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Oh, no, you what I've been impressed with here with Iowa program.
It's just that we talked about this earlier, just the depth and the in the room.
They got guys there two or three deep in some weight classes, which is really difficult to do with 9.9 scholarships.
And you know you know, I think it is.
But I think part of the thing is that there's some people that come there that are actually developing to be really good wrestlers that you that you wouldn't even think of it.
Yeah.
You know, just because of the system.
But, you know, we got a cyclone over there on the bench as well.
Kurt Backus, former cyclone, former all-American for the Cyclones, is now a former cyclone there a long time ago to me then.
Yeah, you know, that's right.
You're listening to Dan Gable, former national champion for Iowa State and then the long time successful legendary coach here at Iowa, and Jim Gibbons, who led Iowa State to their last NCAA title when he was a coach and he was also a national champion wrestler at Iowa State.
McDonough Another takedown makes the score ten two for Matt McDonough from Iowa, won a title last year as a freshman.
Now he's out in front as we head into the end of the second period, 10 to 4 or go, yeah, Matt scores on your early.
That's just a really good sign for him is he just gets better and better as the match goes on as a warning stalling on Iowa state.
So far this year, the only team to have been warned for stalling.
So in these first three matches, McDonough just simply overpowering that young man, Patrick Hunter, a fine young wrestler who's already won a national junior college championship at Iowa Central before transferring to Ames.
But getting a little experience here with the best there is Matt McDonough, 12 for McDonough out in front.
That was an interesting reversal.
Yeah, it looked like he was going to actually get some and then he kind of bailed out of it a little bit, You know, I mean, he got a little trouble and he just boom, he put his head on the mat.
Yeah.
I think he could have maybe went for a little bit and who knows where he could end up.
But if I got a follow through talking about Patrick Hunter, look like he had an opportunity to put it done, it was backed away, but he just ended up putting his face on the mat and he just can't compete in that position.
Oh, hey, it's all now up.
Lots of riding time, of course.
Build Up by Matt McKenna.
Again, coming up, just total domination here.
You know, I mean, McDonough is going to look up at the official every once in a while and say hey is installing and grip sometimes and and he does get the call one point for McDonough stalling the second call on Hunter.
But sometimes it's just pure domination.
I'm not sure about that.
He doesn't have a set of back points either.
And even if he did get the technical foul, it only still be a four pointer.
But it's a long ways to go there yet either.
But that'd be the only way if I get if he gets him on his back several times, you know, break and break it right here.
Come on, keep the stalemate.
Stop.
Got stalemate, though.
Go back to the center where McDonough is on.
He's on top on the mat and he's on top by a score of 13 to 4, looking to put the Hawkeyes out in front for the first time tonight here in the third match, it's 3 to 3.
Iowa State jumped out three oh, Iowa, tied it up.
And this is the third match in McDonough on his way to a very decisive, major decision.
20 seconds left in this match gets a five free.
And this is what we've seen most of the match McDonough dominating on top, not a back point off.
So it looks like it'll be a four points, four point major decision as we wind it down.
And that's what it will be for.
Added on to Iowa, 3 to 7.
And so the Hawkeyes go out in front 7 to 3 with a 14 to 4 victory by Matt McDonough over Patrick Cutter.
Nobody got Ramos.
And now we're ready for 133.
It'll be Brandon Jones, Iowa State, another freshman versus Tony Ramos, a freshman as well.
Tony winner Tony Ramos.
There is a difference.
Once right out of high school, I believe, Iowa State is.
And Ramos is a red shirt.
That's correct.
Ramos right in on the shot in Illinois.
Several time state champion Tony Romo.
Ramos and Brandon Jones from Valley High School and Lemoine, They had Nate Moore also weigh in there.
And you also have another wrestler that a couple of more wrestlers actually at that weight class.
Some that are still probably wanted to be in consideration.
Ramos getting his shot tonight in front of the big crowd versus the rival Iowa State Cyclones.
He's a redshirt freshman from Carroll Stream, Illinois.
Glenn Bard, North Carolina, said he was a three time state champion.
Right.
Actually, the former cyclone is that this way Tyler Clark and no yeah transferred in after Kyle Sanderson left.
Yeah he's got a broken finger right now.
He actually he's in the tryouts.
He won the tryouts, but it was real close and then he broke his hand and he's out for a few weeks here.
You guys ready?
You're ready.
That's right.
You ready?
High jump.
Ready to go.
Reynolds.
Last year, in his redshirt years, the freshman was undefeated in open tournaments at 133 12.
Another guy competing, unattached.
And there's two to make the score, 4 to 1.
Now, Ramos does a nice job on that single leg.
He kept his shoulder and almost the back of the hamstring of Jones and, you know, reached across got to that far ankle and that's always a great finish So far the meet going according to what people would think 197 even though it's they were close in ranking ward ranked ahead of Lofthouse wins for Iowa State and then racing over Simonsson post-match 3 to 3 and then of course the heavily favored McDonagh at 125 for Iowa winning and Ramos certainly the favorite here at 133.
So back inside guys out in front, four, two, one.
Tony Ramos, here's that shot again.
He gets a single, it looks like he puts his shoulder right in the back of the hamstring right there and then stretches him out, gets that far ankle, far hip.
Now, I said, man, all right, not so good technique that Ramos starts on top and he is going to let Jones loose, go back to his feet, shoots right in and gets his third takedown.
Just a little more than 30 seconds left in the first period.
Ramos out in front, 6 to 2 on the strength of three takedowns.
Well, at that, that first shot just looked like a setup to get to that head snap and move into that single leg again.
So nice action.
Get it, get it inside.
Action, guys.
Come on.
Both guys improve.
Both men improve.
Yeah.
Brandon Jones.
It's tough duty here.
Not even having a redshirt year thrown into the Iowa State meet last year.
Your wrestling the simple.
Now you're expected to go up against a pretty tough Hawkeye here that's Des Moines, Iowa Valley High School and that's the end of the first period.
Tony Ramos leads 6 to 2 Iowa State, the hot day dominating that first period with three takedowns.
That's down to Brandon Jones chooses down to begin the second period.
And this is where you never get exposed, usually as a high school wrestler in a down position.
And those are going to go he had to cut him.
Okay.
It's just I could tell by the way he got in that position is not quite coached yet on how to protect himself.
He go like that.
It's shot there by Jones but doesn't quite get the grip on the leg.
6 to 3, the score three escapes, four jones all given to him by Ramos and Ramos very active with his hands keeps good low position like that.
Hop it.
Hey, let's go see.
Go in there Now.
The sound of Euro Washington assistant coach for Iowa State.
He works with the lightweights for the sake of he's got a crater locked up their takedown and the cradle locked.
And Jones is in trouble, isn't he?
I think he's been here before, though.
He's got a pretty good level of ability to go.
He's got a high like he's in the center.
He can't really try to get off the mat too much here.
Oscar Ramos will be able to him over, but still stalemates him out.
Ramos couldn't do anything.
They got to the edge of the mat with that cradle.
But he did get the takedown.
It's 8 to 3 his fourth takedown, a minute left in the second period.
Ramos from Iowa out in front, 8 to 3, the Hawkeyes over the cyclones.
After three matches, 7 to 3.
We're in the fourth match of the evening.
If you're just joining us, we started at 197, went to heavyweight down to 125 and working our way up 133 center and our nice switch back in the single leg again.
I got set up there and now he's back that single leg again.
He needs to go back further without getting his ankles exposed.
Good job putting the foot back to the mat.
So I was able to get off the mat, got his foot back on the mat and go back neutral 8 to 4 and Ramos is encouraged on there.
Zero.
Washington Assistant coach works with the lighter weights at cyclones He's encouraging.
Jones is really nice presenting himself he has he's really doing the job that they're asking him to do but that's a lesson for for a lot of people is that Ramos is trying to drag him back to that.
He should have taken him all the way back to the center of the mat and then going ahead and going after that.
It better if the end of the second period, the third period with Reynolds out in front 8 to 4, he could set the top go, hey, hey, good that Jones starts on top Ramos Jones down single and he gets an escape and Bravo Ramos does he adds to his lead 9 to 4.
Rubio get on the attack and Ramos really dominated the head hands tie right here.
Then he starts putting his weight in those hands, either pushing away or coming down in the collar, tie going right into shots.
Very active here, guys.
I got warning, red warning on Iowa State College.
That's a good call.
Well, Ramos putting the pressure on and Jones, what about guys trying to keep from being majored?
It's 9 to 4.
A major decision is when you win by eight points or more.
You've been warned and lots of writing time.
So it would be 10 to 4 right now if the match ended.
But that's only a six point lead, which would keep the team score only a three point victory going.
That is head gear.
Get out of here.
He's got a single like finish to both sides of head gear.
It's pretty good.
Wow.
One minute left, two points, takedown, 11 to 4.
And if he was to ride him out with the writing time, it would be a major standoff.
No.
Hey, stand up.
So far, the two dominating matches up by Iowa have been no back points.
Lot of right time, a lot of takedown get ups, No back points.
Yeah, it's obviously a little bit overmatched here.
But, you know, you walk into a program, seven guys, 37 seconds, you get put into a meal like this in your second month of being on the end of the program.
And, you know, it's a great learning opportunity for you.
You have no doubt now what it's going to be like.
So the rest of your preparation should dictate that one escape.
And it's 25 seconds left because he actually cut him.
So he needs to be on him if he's going to get it very low.
And they're limiting.
What was timing there?
Yeah, both guys were actually shooting.
Ramos was a little bit lower.
Iowa crowd not only cheering for the points, but they know that just made it a major decision for Tony Ramos.
And that will be the extra point.
And with writing time, the final score is 14 to 5.
That's four more points for the Hawkeyes.
Tony Ramos for the first leg, right over Brandon Jones, the freshman.
There's your winner, Tony Ramos, 55.
Wow.
This guy's low center of gravity.
Yeah, Drew.
And after four matches, the score is Iowa 11, Iowa State three.
And we'll be back with more college wrestling in just a moment.
Welcome back to Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Young and old, everybody enjoys this.
Interesting rivalry and we're at 141.
Number 11, Chris Bruin versus Mark Bowling.
Drew in a transfer.
He was an all-American at Arizona State two years ago, and he transferred in from Arizona State.
He's a senior.
He's going up against Mark Boag, a sophomore, one of three brothers on the team.
He's from Waverly Shell.
Raquel was a two time state champion, three brothers, Jake, Matt, Mark, all on the Iowa Hawkeye team together.
It's only the fifth time ever happened in Iowa history.
So start making a name of Dan three brothers at the same time on your team.
Zaleski.
Zaleski.
Is that for a purpose?
Banner Yep, Like that.
And those are the ones that are.
And then other contenders?
Yep.
Two others that had three.
And then one more and UConn and the UConn's.
You guys are good.
You guys are good.
We had to think a while.
Yeah, I didn't even coach him.
I ran into I ran into Ed Beneke on the way and he says, Did you hear the story about Dan?
I just heard it.
It was back in 71 or 72.
He was in India wrestling and.
He got bit by a cobra.
And after five days of excruciating pain, the cobra died.
But Ed told me, is that true?
Oh, I got bit.
Yeah, Yeah.
You know, Eddie, sense of humor.
Oh, Eddie Vedder, the three time NCAA champion here at Iowa.
When you say that side shot in by drooling on Mark Borthwick, he got his head down.
People are hitting him over.
Deep water came up good.
All right.
Come out the backside and he come up.
He should have just let her let it go right then.
Yeah.
He's going to go ahead and try to carry that ankle out, try to keep some square.
You don't want to get in his face, too.
Shoelace position if you're drawing a break in there.
Yeah.
Any time.
Any time you go to your finish immediately, it's just better than trying to control it.
But some people can learn to control a little bit, but that clock can run out on you.
Stalemates can happen and you know, the guy can can wrestle out of it as well.
Drew an a very good student to a law student going to go to law school.
He says, I'm going to do my I'm going to put the gloves on, my fighting on another mat and the court.
Yeah.
So it's his last rodeo and he's come to Iowa State for shot at a national championship.
He was an all-American at Arizona State two years ago.
And yeah, there's a drag into a single leg.
Looked like he was unable to knock him down, cracking down to his hip.
But I've always had a nice job of keeping his hip up off the mat.
Now with another scramble right here, he's got pretty heavy hips around him.
He's using too much of an arm short time.
And it is short time.
It's the end of time in the first period.
No mark ball away from Iowa.
Chris Drew and Iowa State view all knotted up ball would deferred his choice and so Drew and chooses down to begin the second period zero zero drew in trying to now draw first blood trying to get out, get an escape here or a reversal that egg thrown up through it.
You're out now.
Nice job by Drew and basically getting his hips out.
But tell you, if always does not give up anything easy, Drew and gets the escape.
It's one zero for the cyclone ball wig out of the outstanding high school program Waverly Shell Rock over the last several years, one of the top programs not only in the state but in America, coached by Rick Caldwell.
Guess where Rick's dad back in the day coached?
You'll never guess.
Learning Sun.
Oh, it's another one.
There you go.
Morning, son.
Got to get that in once a year.
So give me here is my golf coach.
Not that he made me very good, but we had fun.
One zero.
Chris Drew in Iowa State out in front He's in on the leg here.
Head to the outside, cut across them, play nice counter heavy hips by Mark Baldwin and Campbell.
He followed with a shot of his own.
He's almost hit it proud.
Likes Ashley.
Yeah, his best wrestling he's been on defense so coming out of home it of getting his own offense going a little bit maybe that is where he creates his offense but now no score so far off it.
I tell you what though, he had textbook scrambling there, keeping his hips down his head up back.
Do it for 30 seconds.
He got to hit one now.
And when it ends up happening, a lot of times as you gain the respect of your opponent, then the shots don't come as freely and go Good things that go to seconds left in the second period is still one zero Drew, and was in on a shot that looked like it could turn into a take down that ball, which scrambled out impressively to the delight of this Iowa partizan, Iowa crowd and as we said, very knowledgeable.
They know what's happening.
There's a buzz every time an Iowa Hawkeyes is able to score or keep from being scored on in a difficult situation.
One zero and ball away now from Iowa will go down underneath a good look at Mark Borthwick, the sophomore from Waverly, Iowa, undefeated this year.
It's not me that he can't touch, you know caution to either in the backyard athlete I sat no Mike McCormack says that's on me I'm going to say that drawing made it all the way to the semis a couple of years ago of the NCAA championships ended up sixth and all-American.
So he has been at that today.
That close, Mr. Turk there.
And good job.
His skin.
Nice little switch and hip heist away 1 to 1.
Well, the lesson I think here for Drew and if he's going to score is he's got to shoot for two legs.
Right?
Basically, ball leg is an expert at cutting the corner If he's going to take a shot, not not reach for one, but try to get to both legs.
He's trying to get to one and change over.
And really it's not necessary ball leg.
He's going to take this action and get a shot.
His own.
One, two, one a minute.
20 left in the third period, the regulation time of four tied.
We've already seen one 197 the beginning match.
We'll go to overtime at that what does it 50 seconds left in regulation time the score still one one neither wrestler gets a takedown in the first three each got escapes and they started down in their periods set two and three and double There's a shot and he comes up and does he have both legs, Jim Yes, he does.
But he end up grabbing the whole guy.
Nice, nice save by new Bruin.
Had it all the way there and now is going to come out on top two point takedown and it's with less than 10 seconds left in the third period and both leg is going to come away with a big win at £141.
Whoa.
What a way to begin your career here in the Iowa State.
Meet the judges.
First time in the lineup, the sophomore Mark Moehrig gets a big win for the Hawkeyes.
Three two, one.
There's your winner over Chris Bruin.
Pretty impressive there at the end, Dan?
Well, I'll tell you, he had him all the way off to Brown on his, but they just he went for one of those things.
You leave your legs behind you when you're finished, you got to keep your feet away from the guy's reach.
And the guy was able to reach, grab and roll under, end up.
I know what he was doing there all week.
That's the end of five matches in a match.
I got to get up and go, We're going to have a little halftime here, but here's what you're talking about.
The end of it.
He got the two.
We didn't see the whole scramble there.
But what a win for Mark Bogue, the sophomore in the lineup, made the varsity lineup for the first time, paid his dues.
Here he is, his third year in the program.
He's a redshirt sophomore and a great, great crowd tonight.
We'll get to the numbers here pretty soon.
But I know it's it's close capacity and the weather outside is frightful.
But the Iowa fans are so delightful.
We'll go to Jim Gibbons with the leading coach.
I'm here with Tom Brands.
And Tom, boy, what an exciting match that was.
Talk about that.
Always toughness there.
Well, there's toughness at the end.
You know you're the guys and he's rolling and you score from defense but we want to be on the offense.
He's not showing his offense and that management do what you got to do at the end They're good great match here a lot of here but talk about the previous four matches I think done a good job getting the major rebounds.
Good job good job coming right out, hitting holds and finishing.
Lofthouse had the guy in the ropes with the stall call.
He got to finish though.
That's a big one.
But we got five matches to go and a lot of wrestling, a lot of rest.
Good luck wrestling out.
Thanks to Mike's like hero wrestler.
There's a familiar face and he's my partner tonight.
And there's the brain trust for Iowa and for Iowa State.
It's been an exciting first half where the Hawkeyes have won four out of five, and after five matches, the score is 14 to 3 Iowa.
We'll be back with more college wrestling in just a moment.
back at Carver Hawkeye, where we're having a special presentation, special recognition for the legend of our sport.
Dan Gable, two time NCAA champion for Iowa State and a long time coach at the very successful Iowa Hawkeye program.
Let's go to the public address.
ANNOUNCER Holy mackerel.
It's only natural that his name would be directly attached to the great Iowa Iowa State wrestling rivalry of all time.
From now on, Iowa and Iowa State will be wrestling their regular season duel every year for the Dan Gable traveling trophy.
Let's hear it for former Iowa State wrestler and University of Iowa coach and wrestling's number one son, Dan Gable.
He's at the center of the battle now in control.
Shell and Gary Bada are recognizing his great accomplishments and what he has meant to both of these fine institutions and to the sport of wrestling.
Thank you.
Dan Gable.
What a stunner for Dan Gable.
I do not think he knew He knew he was being presented something, but he did not know that what they just presented was that every Iowa state, Iowa dual meet from here on out will be vying for the Dan Gable traveling trophy, a trophy that will travel to the winning team every year.
The Dan Gable traveling trophy, recognizing his championship career at both Iowa State and Iowa 355 wins and only 21 losses.
His dual meet record as a coach.
But this was a surprise.
I think Dan DeWeese will be back and we'll get some comments from the coach when we come back with more college wrestling in just a moment.
And Welcome back to Carver Hawkeye Arena, where the Iowa Hawkeyes are ahead 14 two three of the Iowa State cyclones.
We're at halftime intermission time where Dan Gable just received a special presentation to the Dan Gable traveling trophy.
And there's Dan, our broadcast partner out there, kind of greeting his fans.
I think he is stunned.
It was a surprise to him.
It was a it was a surprise to Dan.
I we were standing right next to this is why I think they're going to honor me at halftime.
But he never knew what it was about.
But what a tremendous honor and inappropriate and what he meant.
It's meant so much to all all of wrestling, of course.
And certainly these two programs.
I when I was doing well, Dan Gable, Jim Gibbons, those are synonymous with Iowa State and Iowa national champion wrestlers and coaches.
It's my privilege just to be the two of you as we begin another year of college wrestling.
And what a big meet to start with.
Great crowd.
And it's not even the greatest weather in here.
We've got a crowd.
It's near capacity for this meet that started out at £197 with Iowa State getting a win.
Yeah, Jerome Warren was able to fend off a late rally by Lofthouse here, got the match, got tight late and and really that's what we like to see.
We like to see the emotions of the coaches go right off right in the first match.
We had it there it was good.
So and then Iowa went on a roll raising winning a close match at heavyweight But McDonough and Reynolds, as we expected, dominating at 125 and 133, but a real close match.
And that was a back breaker for Iowa State with Drew and going down to the all-American two ball way.
First year in the lineup.
Well, tell you what ball we did, what he had to do just to stay in that match.
And then what a great scrambler he is.
Probably most athletes get nailed on four or five of those takedowns, but he was able to scramble, keep his head up, and you can tell he's gone against top notch competition in the room because he was he was competitive all the way through that match, was able to score in the end.
And, you know, that's that's what the hawks like to see.
14 to 3 is the score.
The Hawkeyes lead the cyclones.
And when we come back, we'll have more highlights and more college wrestling.
We're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
Everybody enjoying this meet where Iowa wins or is winning 14 to 3.
But Dan Gable, my broadcast partner, honored at halftime and stunned, I think, with the Dan Gable traveling trophy, which will be a part of this particular interstate rivalry dual meet for the for the rest of the duel and it's pretty neat honor and congratulations.
Well, that was pretty much a surprise.
It was I never even thought about it, but but I wouldn't even listen to what they were saying.
So I had to pick the ad to pick it up a little bit after after they said it.
But, you know, I'm very honored.
And for me to be gone that long at Iowa State and then to agree for me to have that traveling trophy, that's unbelievable.
Well, let's go to Jim right now.
He's with Kevin Jackson.
Thanks, Jim.
I'm with Kevin Jackson and Kevin Rudd.
The quite the start that you'd like to see here with your guys and tell us about the first five matches.
Well, I mean, you got to win the close one.
We had to close with that heavyweight and 141 every time Chris Drew and attack the kid he got in his finishes weren't as fast.
They probably should have finished the work to finish division a lot quicker.
Very disappointed with the way Chris into that match.
He had to get the win and got out Scramble heavyweight guy to kind of big man up late on us and we couldn't get off the bottom but you got to find a way to win the match.
Curtis what do you expect from your guys, the back half of the meeting to compete?
I think the hard right line that's coming up, I expect to get started at 149 and I expect everyone else after that to compete.
All right.
Good luck.
Thank you.
And we're ready to go here at £149.
The second half of this dummy stage where Nate Carr, c r Jr number 16th rank eight one record for Iowa State will go up against Jarrett Curry, Nick Carr Jr.
The son of three time NCAA champion and make Carr senior an Olympic bronze medalist.
So he comes from great stock cherry from New London, Iowa.
Neutral neutral sophomore in on the leg right away for the Hawkeyes this is I didn't quite expect this in this match year maturity getting right after his shot.
That is much more of a scramble type wrestler.
I think if he wants to finish sooner, he's going to have to go back down what he's going to call a play.
Yeah, but he did a nice job.
He's got a pretty good shot at finishing their degree.
Yeah, that is a surprise.
That is a surprise.
Two points for cheering and just seemed like Nate Carr was asleep at the wheel there.
Terry got right out there and went after it.
Carr from Gray, Georgia.
He was a three time state champion in Georgia.
Cherry from New London, as I said, was a state champion himself.
Get it back.
Now, This is one of those situations again where pace in the early part of the match is more important than the score.
And even though the scores in series, he wants to keep this a high paced match.
Nick Carter Junior hasn't done a lot of, you know, spent a lot of time down at the £49 weight class here.
This is new for him.
So you want to test his conditioning light him, Nate, stop waiting on him.
You think Nate Carr was a £157 national champion, National Junior College champion, Iowa Central and sees the opportunity at this weight class for his last rodeo his senior year, first time in the lineup on a regular basis.
Carr, as it is for Cherry, the sophomore for the Hawkeyes.
Sure.
He actually started out probably in the second position behind Dylan Carew, who ended up getting injured.
And Cherry has been back in for the last two matches and won both of those matches.
It quite a scramble with the University University of Tennessee Chattanooga wrestlers, and he end up getting a fall.
But he did a great job of staying in the match.
And so far he's come out and he's kind of controlling the match So far.
And it's two, two, one, two, two, one.
Lead.
Yeah.
Really?
The only shot so far taken by cherry.
And it was successful take there's the shot low and in that Carr fans were showing himself takedown and Carr goes ahead 3 to 2 up right at the ankle and right the farney not a lot of counters there Dirk I always easy Wow taking it right to his back right there that's potentially no back points right now but getting a you got one count that was a nice move had Doug nice job of cheering staying off his No Corey he's got the one count everything good point by you Jim three two to the score Nick Carr ahead.
I don't think I've ever seen this down.
There's a nice little low single leg shot.
Oh, I'd like to see that other sequence before where he tipped up underneath his.
Yeah, he just came up.
It's kind of like a body.
He came up dunk and then it was more his chest, a chance to keep him.
I don't see anybody That's who won contest.
Yeah.
Back touch You guys didn't get on easy Stay six easy Thanks.
Right back to your neck.
Easy.
Get it.
Doing a good job of taking him back to the mat there and putting him in close to be in danger.
Now he's got an element.
He's got that bottom leg lock.
That's dangerous.
Mine is right there.
You think he got to there?
Got back points.
Five count Nate Carr going to work referee in the secondary unlocks that play 30 left in the 33 two more for Carr a back points there and you all four fingers hit all four with that follow up Hey keep doing power get it here junior up the 1001 to 1 count Here you go.
Perpendicular forward right now back here it is another 1000 1002.
Here he got setback points again.
He hasn't one.
He's going to come up with two.
He's got the two count.
You can see doing a good job of controlling is his risk.
They hold the whole crew.
Two more are near red makes the score 7 to 2.
Now, for Carr, this is how Kevin Jackson wanted to start out.
I'm sure he's disappointed in a couple of his wrestlers in the first half.
Just not winning the close matches right over it.
Do it.
Go do it.
25 seconds left in the second period.
CARR Total Domination in the second period.
As he began on top, Cherry came out with a quick takedown.
There to begin the match.
Carr came back with, answered with an escape and a takedown.
And now to Green two point NEARFALL Gordon Green warning.
That's the first warning on an Iowa wrestler tonight and it's warning on Kyrie the end of the second period seven two to you Nick Carr now reaches down right now I'm sorry what you say down bottom basically you just saw the quickness there and the lift the Turk and he eventually got two points Near-Fall with that and there's Nick Carr Jr set let's go top He's a senior but a junior you see I would say set said okay guys you set the show up.
I'm I say set, don't jump set Carr it's nice job coming to his feet get this helps out Daniel hand fighting escape neutral state Carr extends his lead to to two there He's in a position here to look for an extra 15 points here lyric here like you mean it you're Kevin Jackson seeing a hit like you mean it.
Takedown for the major takedown for the team.
They understand where they're at.
They need every extra point they can get.
Talking about the cyclones who are down 14 to 3 after the first five matches, they started at 197.
We're at 157.
We'll work our way up to end 184 tonight.
Near-Capacity crowd here at Carrboro Hawk.
I am Tim Johnson along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons, and there is Nate Carr Junior with another takedown.
Quick explosive move.
Well, he answered the coach's call there.
He said, That's said we need one.
We need one for the team.
And, you know, a lot of this is just trying to go ahead and look good, look competitive all the way through the match, which is which the cyclones haven't done to this point.
So he's really controlling the hips.
Well, and yeah, you still got score.
Even though I let him go, he still has the major because the right time it's 10 to 3 Carr out in front he dropped behind two zero to start the match but he got a takedown.
But then all Carr said right not only in takedowns but control on the on top position and near Falls Set it up set it up You know we've been talking about wrestlers going up a weight.
Jerome Ward went up.
We're going to see John, who went up but Nate Carr to get in the lineup for the Cyclones, went down to 149 and he is looking good so far, looking like it's the right weight for him.
15 seconds left in the match and he's got the point move and he wants to make it more so He's like to most guy a little confidence.
Yeah it is confident.
Yeah he is it's the crowd here at Carver Hawkeye and Nate Carr Jr in his first Iowa State dual make operating game as a senior.
He he wins it in very convincing manner 15 to 3 and that's four points for the cyclones to make the score 14 to 7 Iowa after 157.
So now we're ready for one five for Derrick, Saint John and Trent, whether that two freshmen will go at it to Saint John in Iowa City West product just up the road here, two time state champion Trent Leatherman, another Iowa native from Balad High School, Maxwell, Iowa.
He's going to Huxley, Iowa.
I'm that paper.
What single you go, boy?
Saint John just really has a lot of range for this weight class, doesn't he?
Just he looks like he could start early, move up a couple of weight classes as he grows into that frame Nice ankle pick there by Leatherman wasn't able to follow up Kind of a classic example where you take the shot but you keep your shoe laces flat so you're not able to go ahead and follow through.
What's the way you guys have wrestled before?
Saint John A pretty convincing victory over Weatherman last year.
This is an advantage here for Saint John is this you don't get all the way around on him here.
Stay up, square up, build up and then run the power walk again.
Just about having him up in the air.
He just got three quarters away and he did a final 25% today.
I'll make the move work, guys.
Low scratch you, man, you.
Good job, Jai.
Here we go.
Back door.
Ready?
We ready now for an ankle.
Better set.
So far, Wedeman's been more aggressive.
Yeah, I'm actually in the position that was the first shot, and he's in on the leg.
Is Saint John's from Iowa.
He returned to Saint John.
Yeah.
Didn't hold that leg long.
Hit the corner.
Well, came up, Looked pretty solid in there, Coach.
Nice.
Good single leg.
Finish.
That's the difference in the match so far.
One guy was able to finish and the other one wasn't.
He Got it.
He's got good.
I would say set twice.
Okay.
Don't think not guys say said.
Okay, go ahead.
Come on.
Three follow up here.
Up.
It's out.
George.
Back, back inside.
Right time.
Tax break with Kevin Jackson's asking Trent weatherman to do is to change sides but you can't.
What he wants them to do is put enough pressure back into him as the force of Saint John to be able to ride on the other side of the body.
And he's not getting any back pressure at all in order to be able to accomplish that technique.
St John's getting that armbar, but he's not getting the elbow back and so far he hasn't been able to get control.
Now that's the first time he's got the elbow back there.
30 seconds left In the first three opposite arm is still a post and it's hard to turn from there with a lot of riding time come out.
15, 15 seconds left here in the first third, 160 Iowa State coming off a big win by nate carr jr.
Trying to get back into this.
It's 14 to 7.
The hawkeyes full of matches left.
That's the end of the first period, Iowa.
Everything here.
Derrick saint john out in front of Trent weatherman there's coach Tom Brand's on right now happy with his freshman thousand 885 1108 35 to 11 9895 strong tonight house.
I got the call and very interesting stat in the book where this is probably the 21st largest crowd ever to see a dual meet and out of the 25 every one of them are involve Iowa and 21 involve Iowa Iowa State only two other schools, Minnesota and Oklahoma State, are even in the mix.
Minnesota versus Iowa twice Oklahoma State versus Iowa.
But 21 out of the top 25.
Dual meet attendance, the highest and the highest the numbers ever are Iowa, Iowa State Duals.
Iowans love the wrestling and they show up and they follow it.
And I would say a lot of them came when they're 8 to 10 inches the snow on the ground.
Well, I think they're showing up north today, so, Fred.
But you know what that means.
We've got a long ways to go yet.
We got to have some of the rest of the country has got to catch up a little bit, make this more universal.
Well, there's never been a time, I think, where we've had more access to college wrestling on television.
It's on the Internet.
You look at the commitment here, media Comm, Iowa Public Television, that partnership, the Big Ten Network, all the Internet broadcasts that we have, things like this or whether it's on TV or radio shows.
That's correct.
Scott Casper take down Radio and others from Corner.
Drake, you drop this off, 45 seconds left.
In the second period, the escape by Saint John puts him out in front three zero here in the second period.
He's also got riding time of a minute 23 It's of hope they got that same shot.
Whether he can finish it again, he's really tough on this.
This is neutral.
Neutral.
Oh, there he got it.
Cool.
Saint John's up five over here at £157.
I'll tell you that.
That shot kind of reminded me.
I don't know if it was exactly that, but it's just Borg show, like, Yeah, good long single leg shot about the same amount of time they finish it.
I missed that guy, coach.
I mean, he was fun to watch national champion last year.
He's just a cool customer.
End of the second period.
Saint John a cool customer himself out in front five zero as he heads into the third period, he went down.
I know other coaches don't miss him, but I enjoyed watching him and we went down to Saint like well we didn't get his full eligibility in the Mac show last year there along with Metcalf and some of the boys that transferred in.
So, you know, they were in there quick and they were out.
So then you lose a year.
It's you know, it's so last year but they did well while they were here.
They made their point as they transferred from Virginia Tech, where they were recruited and went out to join Tom Brandes when he was the head coach there.
But when Tom Brandes took the head coach position here at Iowa, they followed.
Coach Brandes lost a year of eligibility, as Dan was just pointing out.
Let me, Jake.
Jay Russell, one of the most exciting matches you'll ever see in the semifinals.
We'll never forget it.
921.
Yes.
Now nine two, one and wins.
Amazing, For sure.
Yeah.
And takedown Saint John.
Now he's got head on Graham says let's let's put it on to go Let him go Notre game you know Jay Baruchel and Matt McDonagh from Marion two national champs from Marion Iowa in Ma high school Oh no dunk striker for coach the former all-American here at the Hawks along with him and his brother Kent Russell here right away shot there by Weatherman but he wasn't able to drive through and finish it.
They all have all of weatherman shots.
We've been kind of predictable with the lead leg.
And I think, you know, you'd like to see it maybe go to that back leg.
You know, it's a long ways away, but maybe your finish might be a little bit better.
Oh, the thing is, there was no finish.
Yeah, you know.
Right.
And there's a finish by Saint John goes out in front 9 to 2 but he has to holding down to get the major 30 seconds left in the third period and he doesn't hold him down.
Now Weatherman needs to know where he's at.
Saint John certainly knows where he's at.
He needs a takedown to get the major decision in on the leg.
That's the difference in range here that makes it look easy.
If guys got two freshmen going at it.
One certainly the upper hand tonight here at Saint John, the Iowa City West product successful in his first Iowa state dual meet called the three with riding time 1212 to 303.
So the score now 18 to 7 in favor of Iowa.
We'll be back with more college for I don't know.
We're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena, where Iowa leads Iowa State 18 to 7.
And the crowd, if they're Hawkeyes and most of them are, is loving it.
The attendance 11,895, the largest crowd ever, 15,955 here at Carver Hawkeye versus Iowa State a couple of years ago in 2008, Kerr 11,895, Andrew Sorenson ranked number 16 165, versus Jay Kerr ranked number 15.
They've wrestled before Kerr winning a very close match between the two of them.
I think it went to overtime and Sorenson comes out and almost gets to take down neutral, but no score yet.
Kerr is very flexible, right?
He's not in a good position and it was not a good look.
There's pretty much should be two there.
No, I don't know.
Wow.
As I think I've got a game two there when I had my eyes.
But I think I thought, you know, you got both cheeks on the mat.
That's usually two.
I don't know if he did, but it was quick.
I mean, and again and again, when the new rules get some new rules about playing the match, that would have been least was one point.
You know think that's good technique no points that Sorenson Jr from Wooden Crystal Lake take Tonka those triple header high schools in Iowa Jake Kerr a junior as is Sorenson from Oskaloosa Oskaloosa high school Well back to Drew shot a good and afterwards Jake Kerr is a senior not a junior Sorenson a junior.
But we don't have.
Hey, Hey, guys.
I think Kerr's one of those guys that stepped in a couple of years ago for an injured hawk eye and took his lumps.
And he just gets tougher and tougher.
He knows he knows what tough is.
Seems a little more confident.
And I think that's what you're talking about.
But, you know, it's what you hear that's kind of where he ends up after this season.
Yeah.
A couple of three years ago, he finished as high as third in the senior Nationals while he made the junior world team, actually, and competed in the world championships in freestyle.
He's good with stuff like this where you can get tilt pounders and stuff like that, but neutral could be neutral.
And talk about a wrestler that the coach is happy with.
Sorenson just keeps getting better and better.
Does.
Yeah, he does.
It looks like it looks to me.
I mean, I'm impressed with that first shot he took and then he came right back into his shot to the other side.
So he's looking for something?
Yeah, he looks like knows what he wants, that's for sure.
He's looking for a potentially get the head.
He can catch the head with that left arm.
It'd be trouble for Kerr, but the official says it's stalemate going nowhere.
So they put him back to the feet.
It's zero zero, 25 seconds left In the first period.
We're at £165, seventh match of the evening The Hawkeyes lead 8 to 7.
This first period really belongs to Sorenson as far as close scores, but at the same time, still zero zero.
So it's close really isn't what you're looking for unless you can continue to chip at it right in a little more activity by Sorenson, perhaps he gets a stall call Iowa State into the first period, 002.
You I misspoke.
It's the eighth match of the evening.
We've had seven matches in Iowa out front of the Cyclones, 18 to 7.
We're at 165 and we'll finish out with 174 and 184.
We started the evening here at Carver Hawkeye at £197.
Escape Quick Good quickness by Andrew Sorenson.
He goes out in front one zero pretty good there.
He faked one direction, came back, the other was some nice back pressure and got the easy escape was a double leg attempt to do that It's neutral.
Neutral, neutral.
Neutral.
Oh, like how I can see partially.
I really don't know how you don't call that before, but that's what Kevin Jackson wasn't.
He should have been, too.
And sometimes you just wonder how long they're going to let him go in these scramble positions.
But he's going to look like he's going to score here.
Yeah, there's two finally.
And so the score is three zero.
The cyclone out in front.
just approaching one minute left in the second period.
Well, eight.
The difference is they're certainly giving the benefit of the doubt the guy who's not being aggressive.
And that's been a trend, you know, from the standpoint of the drop through.
You know, and it seems like you're able to hang on a little longer.
Hey, good.
I like to give it the benefit of the doubt, too.
I don't care what uniform he's wearing to the guy who takes the shot.
Right.
And I think that's what we're talking about on the edge of the mat.
You can the same philosophy.
Yes.
Oh, with back scoring.
Where, when, where they're at, where they're located, how hard they're working.
Yep.
And you know, that's a good.
That's a good rule change to be looking at.
We'll be back right after the break.
Let's go through it.
Boom, boom, boom, boom, action, guys.
They're actually going to get out of control.
And in there, Kerr and Sorenson wrestled twice, Kerr winning both.
And one overtime, 11. in the Midlands.
But it's been a couple of years, guys who have made a move yet on the bottom so.
Oh yeah, apparently he's forgetting some people forgetting about their matches before I can come up, I guess one guy is hanging in back and I think Kerr keeps looking for the big move.
Nice job that one escaped there.
I think.
I think he got one.
But maybe he'll give him.
It'll give him the benefit of the doubt for hustling.
Yeah.
No change, no change.
You know, I think that was an escape.
Yeah.
Oh well, they're trying to even it up a little bit.
Right.
Think 10 seconds left in the second minute for right in time.
There, too.
Makes a big difference.
It's a huge.
It's a huge call.
Big, big call.
Yeah.
You're in good times and the right out by Sorenson's Iowa minute 14 right in advantage for Sorenson from Iowa State he's also up three zero with Kerr going down on your point Jim it would be 3 to 1 less riding time, probably 104 writing time.
Basically, get out and get a takedown you only need to take down basically wins it if you can keep them down with anything 5 seconds or 4 seconds.
Yeah, that's Larry.
Look for the future.
Look for it back to the head neck.
But you're really wasting a lot of time there with his legs tied up.
High waisted.
Yeah.
You know, what I'm noticing is these guys, 15 wrestlers or so that we've never seen before, but there's no way these teams don't finish higher than where they're ranked right now in the NCAA later in the year.
What do you guys think?
Get through it?
I mean, wow.
I wouldn't think so.
I mean, I mean, I don't think I would think both these teams are, you know, looking for trophies, you know, team laughs.
Yeah, that's my point.
And so decimated by graduation.
But Jim talked about it, especially in the Iowa room, the stalls full of horses shot and stopped.
Yeah.
Let the guy react.
Right.
He kept his shoelaces flat.
We saw that earlier with Weatherman and Right takes a nice shot, but his shoe laces are flat.
He's not in a position to be able to follow through, but when he shot, he was in deep and just hesitated.
The other guy a chance to score instead of going right into the cut in the corner are left and right.
Then, you know, it's a lot more difficult.
Can't be one and done out there at the college level plus it's you know and then another shot by Sorenson he's in the FedEx Cup and Sorenson looks like he's respecting Kerr's of the ability here to be able to go ahead and throw some flunk at him.
But double he got Carter Carter does a good job at the minus but yeah we're neutral looking like you guys in 30 seconds starting up, up up Saric a little separation has got that head into the knee They come across the double and cast a cross to keep his butt a little bit lower.
The Iowa state guy does it look he's neutralizing that knee and cutting across he's in pretty good shape here.
No.
If for nothing else to stay right where he is with a 3 to 1, he's going to win the match just by.
He's got riding tying.
Even if he gave up the takedown, I'm going to take it, you know, a near fall, take out a Nearfall Sorensen did the job of reversing victories here from before.
That's the end of the match at £165, a very good, steady win in the first time in three matches that Sorensen comes out on top of Kerr.
The score 4 to 1 in favor of Sorensen from Iowa State puts three on the board for the Cyclones and now it's 18 to 10 and they rise.
They go in that £174 where John Reeder think he's finished third two years ago at 165 for the Cyclones, he's up at 174 and leading the Cyclones and he's going against freshman Ethan Lofthouse.
He wants to get that arm, he's looking for that tie take down there.
You got it.
Lofthouse knows where he is in this position.
Two points takedown.
You got to go back points.
So does Raider.
Yeah.
You're knows where he's at Two.
No, two points.
The great job of coming out of there, actually.
Very good work.
He had him tight.
Yeah.
In going back to that last match I'm a little surprised know that was pretty workmanlike and Curtis one sided.
Yeah.
Kurt really didn't put himself in a position at all to score any points.
You know, John Raider coming off the season last year were really a tough weight class at £265 weight class.
Andrew Howe and the rest of that gang were really solid physical.
Ryan Morningstar Arena Moving up to a weight class, I think that maybe might suit him a little bit better.
And yet a very good international wrestler himself, he was down at 163 here, just a few weeks ago when he went to Italy and wrestled in the especial.
We're talking about reader.
Reader.
Yes.
And so he had to build back up.
And so he's really excited about being at 174 because it's just a different game.
He says he understands where he needs to be at the end of the year, and in eating and preparing for those NCAA days, he may have just ran out of little gas last year, cutting to 165.
Definitely control in this match hit him with a fireman Kelly And then now he's got that leg and control in that wrist and it's one sided The whole first period here.
A minute left in the first period.
John Reeder, the senior from Davison, Michigan, same high school Brett Metcalf used the boys to get net wrist road user Reeder you down is pretty tough for Lofthouse down there.
I mean he's really not doing very much staying pretty parallel.
He's really getting his rest Road Yeah and readers doing a great job with that hit weight they let him up there but he's looking for a minute maybe a tilt or something nice Just keep really that right arm that knows that the left arm bard run it.
It's not looking to run it, though.
As it stands pretty parallel to right in time on this.
The whole period 10 seconds cut them up kind of shows domination on one side here so far.
But even though the match is 201 Poindexter on the right in time and in first period scored 202 minutes and 43 seconds of riding time advantage for Reeder Green.
The first takedown coming 17 seconds into the first period.
Right.
John Rader, the senior 12 and up and looking to do a little bit better at the end of the year.
He ended up not being an all-American last year after being third as a sophomore for the Cyclones right away.
I hadn't a solid escape right in front of all you is drop down on him.
Yeah, he's got a drop down on it.
But I.
He wanted to go on the feed anyway.
Raiders sitting there on his rear end going when are you going to plop on.
He, when are you going to come and escape.
Puts Reeder out in front three of her to go.
It seemed like Raiders had a quicker pace until just the last 2030 seconds.
Looks like Raphael starting to pick up his own movement a little bit.
Otherwise, Reeder was really the making all the quickness on for down a little bit.
Lofthouse It's going to come from Avon, Utah.
Hartz Mountain Crest High School is a four time state champion in Utah.
His uncle, we saw, wrestled the first match of the evening.
Luke Lofthouse, a senior.
He was a three timer in Utah.
We'll see another Utah wrestler and he'll be have the cyclone uniform on at £184 to wear a takedown to make that look easy.
There.
Takedown.
Thanks the score five zero for Reeder I tell you this this really?
Yeah.
Come on, guys.
Come on, boys.
This work works, but they're crazy.
Oh, hell.
Even his, like, back here.
15 seconds left.
In the second period, Grieder dominating this £174 match.
Our ninth of the evening will finish at 184.
Iowa out in front, 18 to 10.
And the Iowa State's going to have not only win these last two matches, but extra points have a couple of majors to even tie the score for the fifth going down.
A pin would be huge here as they go into the last match, only a freshman, Ethan Lofthouse, went up against the senior Green Adrian out.
Remember?
I say caution, don't jump on a subject that you're good on.
Lofthouse set.
Let him up to your tie.
Go to work.
Come on, guys.
Let's go.
Action neutral.
Go to work now.
Reeder looking for a major.
Had him up doing all the hand action himself and Lofthouse just settling for a double outside tie.
He did not even make an attempt to control anything.
There.
He's just at a different pace than Reeder is now know he's trying to sleep.
Not as fast as these three Daniel are.
Good.
Great angle snaps, big shots now minute Freedom was all.
And now you know, Tim, I want to make a special shout out.
We talked about Erik Voelker here a little bit earlier, but his dad Dave, is he's been battling the health condition is in a in the late stages and I just want to let him know that I'm thinking about him and we mentioned Alison Grimes and grandsons there and he's in the late stages of battling cancer and well, no, I'm thinking about him very vocal.
One of the great athletes in the history of Iowa State wrestling.
I'm sure his dad, Dave, has always been very proud of his sons and traveled everywhere to watch his son really be the champion he was.
And I'm sure he couldn't be prouder to see his son back on the sidelines coaching for the Cyclones and and so it's a real important down 10 seconds for shot in by Ethan Lofthouse but Reeder coming around and more often got his head up and it 5 to 1 6 to 1 with riding time three more points for Iowa State narrows the score at 18 to 5 oh our 18 to 13 five point difference.
So after nine matches, the score is Iowa 18, Iowa State 13.
We'll be back with the final match in just a moment.
Thanks a lot of all our Welcome back to Carver Hawkeye for our final match.
Iowa State trailing Iowa 18 to 13.
But anything can happen.
We're technically still undecided because a six point fall for the Cyclones could bring home the win for him and learn to expect the unexpected.
When Iowa State and Iowa meet.
How often has something like this happened where an upset the end won it for their team?
Great gamble.
Grant GAM Gambrell for the last win in the for the Cyclones December 5th 2004 six years ago.
I guess you last one in Carver Hawkeye Arena and Grant Gambrell the sophomore for Iowa in Iowa City west two time state champion, kind of like it's turned into a tremendous feeder program for the Hawks, led by former NCAA champion Mark Rylance, Iowa City West, up against Cole Schaffer, the freshman from Wasatch High School.
Kyle Sanderson dad Steve still coaches out there in was so this is from Heber, Utah.
If that sounds familiar that's why watch the ankle pick That is it.
Heber City.
Heber City actually, you talked about cancer and I got a good friend of mine watching the meet tonight.
He's in university hospitals here, and he's I drive his car as a courtesy Pat McGrath.
He's getting some surgery and he's watching unless unless he's got too much dope in him right now, you know, excuse me.
In the if that's the case, he might be sleeping, but I bet he's watching.
He's one.
He's such a great guy.
Pat McGrath And we wish him speedy recovery and know he has enjoyed following you, Dan, and your coaching in Iowa for years and all of Iowa athletics.
So we wish you well.
Pat and I had so few other people fly back, you know, for the for the football game and into this meet.
I didn't even realize why they were flying back because they were going to honor me and I didn't know it, you know, but let's just take off.
Gamble goes out and five to nothing and about a minute left in this first period.
My buddy Big Bob, when he came down here, Bob Almighty came down here.
And one was you don't come back this time of the year.
He usually in Phenix, but now I know why he came back.
Nice tan.
Yeah.
Anything can happen.
I think I've been in this position before.
Where?
Up by five and, you know, maybe lost by a pin and then lost a dual meet, but not off and not off.
And I know I have.
So.
But this is one of these city boys on West High boys here.
I actually was city to Yeah.
He started this city and transferred over to came to West High School here so he had both Brad Smith and Mark Rylance That's Eric Voelker right there, all time NCAA champion Travis Polson next to him.
That the Niro Washington and Kevin Jackson will handle that.
Gambrell very dominating here in this first period after his takedown and that'll end the first period out in front two oh and right in time advantage shot by game Boy everything you read, the first shape defers down to scramble.
What do you if you're Kevin Jackson Jim what are you thinking right now the second step.
Well you're not thinking anything but the next move right now, Kevin hasn't stopped coaching for the all ten matches.
I mean, he's been in to him and says a lot about what he's thinking.
He'll collect his thoughts a little bit later, maybe talk to the media a little bit and But he's all into this match.
Well, he's hoping that there's a big move that this guy has.
That big can get near it.
Right.
You can smell it and take it that, you know, that's what would have to happen.
Yeah.
And you saw him lock up in the upper body position there.
Bear hug earlier to match.
And Gambrell seemed to respect that move away from that position.
He got to a low shot so he can come back to something like that.
We might have some excitement, but other than that, it's been all.
GAMBRELL three zero in favor of Gambrell They've wrestled a couple of times before that losing with Gambrell winning big decisions 14 to 6 and 18 to 7.
And they got over that nice little exchange there.
That's neutral, neutral, no hip in the takedown for Gamble, a gamble was looked like it actually was going to lose the leg and get a nice little get away from the weight and cut the corner and ended up with the takedown.
No horsepower there.
Just good technique.
But I'm sure he's got some horsepower in the 450 grant.
Gambrell was warning Green for the Hawkeyes.
GREEN And he has been warned for stalling.
Back up, back up.
Got to get up.
Now, you mentioned earlier, Team Tim.
What does it take for these teams to do well in national tournament?
You know, it's so different.
You get that there's so much of a premium placed on the top four places and and you look up and down the lineups here, you don't necessarily see a lot of guys that pop out right away and say, hey, I'm a top four guy.
Matt McDonough, of course, retur us.
These guys got a lot of work to be, you know, top eight your move top shelf and so maybe have a lot of 5 to 8 guys and a team that has maybe four people in the top four.
Can you really score some points in the Nationals?
So it's tough duty.
Yeah.
Knowing where the end of the second period to score five or whatever you want down.
You know one thing we haven't seen a lot of back points tonight Nate Kirk Jr had a couple sets but other than that that I'm not sure if he has optional optional start you're saying also got score to a back point.
I don't think so yeah I don't think I was going to back point you know but you see that a lot of times with young teams you know they're just worried about getting the takedowns and escapes and in there, you know, I actually talked to Jeff not too long ago, pretty good little double shot, but he didn't follow through.
But and he was talking about what you were talking about.
Actually, Cornell's got a certain number of he's got, you know, really good guys here, really good guys there.
And, you know, guys that are, you know, supposed to be placed in the top three or four.
And and so far we you know, we don't know on these teams yet that nice little duck.
And so you just don't want it go neutral neutral.
It was one of those positions of Iowa State can come back and get a whiff over turned his back and it would quiet the crowd.
But of course, Jeff Kerber, former three time all-American for Iowa, his son wrestles and Cornell wrestles.
Cornell 165.
Cornell ranked number one right now, a lot of potential place winners and former three time all-American Greg Randall, the head coach at Boise State, has the boys and state wrestling team in the hunt this year.
While they're all out in Las Vegas right now, Cornell University, Boise State, University of Wisconsin and Gerber's son had won the first two rounds today, but going how exactly are things going?
But.
GAMBRELL And another take down out in front, 9 to 2.
He's got plenty of riding time.
But the interesting thing about all that is that there's a couple of programs there where they've never really been in the hunt.
You know that the hunt for the championship.
Cornell is a newcomer to that.
And so, you know, you've got teams like Oklahoma State and Minnesota that that have had that experience and coaches that have had that experience.
And so there's a little flopping around it almost got out almost at the back point.
I think Iowa has not scored back points in this entire match, but the crowd comes to their feet.
This black out.
Carver hockey crowd of almost 12,000.
They get what they pay for a win by the Hawkeyes.
Gambrell wins 12 to 3, four more points for Iowa, and they're out 20 to 13.
Another Iowa and Iowa State dual meet in the books.
The 77th version.
My question is, when does the trophy show up?
I don't know if that's starting right now or not, you know, but I just find out about it.
I hope they're not expect me to design it.
But yeah, could get my input.
But, you know, I think what you said earlier was really important.
It's like it's early.
Hey, and who's going to develop, you know, and keep getting better?
Who's going to bring those kids up to where we sit here and watch them?
And that's the kids, the top four or five instead of five through eight or, you know, whatever.
That's what's going to have to happen after both these teams now.
Absolutely.
So we're we're going to come back and talk about some of that.
And so we'll be back with more thoughts in just a moment with more college wrestling back at Carver Hawkeye Arena, where the Iowa Hawkeyes have defeated Iowa State 22 to 13, their 66 straight dual meet victory.
And gentlemen, some final thoughts about this meet sighting made.
I think, you know, Iowa State probably looked at this.
They had an opportunity, maybe win five matches.
They won four and maybe a chance of stealing this thing.
But the Hawkeyes seem to win a lot of scrambles.
And then they're just, you know, dominant performances here.
But yet at 25.
Yeah, you know, I, I looked at the Cyclones and they come in and they faced an undefeated team tonight by no losses in that lineup.
And they put four one losses for the first time in this year.
So, you know, that's a that's a move forward for the Cyclones a little bit.
Yeah.
Look the highlights of the evening here Nick Carter Junior got Iowa State going after the break and had the only near-fall points of the night.
Pretty amazing.
And then get a good job.
And then as Derrick say John here ended up getting a major four for the Hawkeyes come right back right after cars and then Sorenson actually did a good job of winning for the first time against the Hawkeyes, against Kerr.
He'd lost against Jansen Reeder from Iowa State, you know, pretty much dominated the match and ended up with Campbell winning after the meet was within Iowa State's reach by one by five points behind.
But, Campbell, end of winning.
And there's your results.
Iowa State started with the big win by ward but then rising McDonough Ramos Ball gets Iowa State into the halftime and then Carr sink John Sorensen and on and on where Iowa wins 22 to 13 once again, final score, Iowa, 20 to 13.
We're going to come back and wrap it up in just a moment.
just a moment.
We're back at Carver Hawkeye, the Iowa Hawkeye Band, wrapping it up with their walk around the the the park here.
And Jim Gibbons, a final thought about the meet.
There's a lot of youth out there in both these programs, a lot of potential.
You know, I see bits and pieces of future national champions out there.
And it's going to be fun to watch these teams develop over the course of the year.
Dan Gable Well, that's the key.
There's Cornell and Boise State and Oklahoma State and Minnesota that has some of those real strong competitors out there.
And for the state of Iowa, whether it's the Cyclones, the Hawkeyes go up in there and challenge, those four teams right now are more they're going to have they got a lot of work to do yet.
So we've got an exciting year ahead of us.
It was a great start.
Once again, our final score is Iowa 22 and Iowa State 13.
Thanks for watching.
And now for Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons.
I'm Tim Johnson and saying good night from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
