It's a classic intrastate showdown between the Iowa State cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Hello, everyone.
I'm Tim Johnson, and welcome to our season debut of college wrestling.
It's my pleasure to welcome my broadcast partner.
Only a handful of ever done what these two have done as win NCAA titles as wrestlers and coaches.
Dan Gable, two time NCAA champion at Iowa State 15 National Championships, one as a coach at Iowa and Hall of Famer Jim Gibbons.
He won both his national championships at Iowa State as a wrestler and as a coach.
Welcome, guys.
The stage is set.
Look at the rankings.
Number one versus number two.
I mean, it doesn't get any better than this.
And so let's start out with that.
Iowa leads the series 55 to 16, but anything can happen.
So let's start with the number two ranked Iowa State cyclones and their coach, Carl Sanderson.
He was 159 and on a four time NCAA champion.
Does it get any better than that, Dan?
Well, it doesn't as an athlete, but he's a coach and he wants to take that record and forget about it and wants to build a new record.
So that's why he's here and he's got a strong team here and he wants to build a legacy in coaching as well.
Well, his team six returning All-Americans, Jim six returning All-Americans and a lot of youth here.
You've got five of those guys are juniors and one sophomore.
So he's got the talent to make a mark this year.
Talk about making a mark.
The Iowa head coach, Tom Brand, three time NCAA champion, Olympic champion, world champion.
Let's talk about Tom Brand.
Well, I'll tell you what, he's building a culture here at Iowa, bringing back winning ways here after eight years.
National champion coach, you know, national coach of the year here.
And, you know, he's all about focus and intensity.
He's got the type of talent that really buys into that.
Well, I know the Iowa Hawkeye fans love to hear this, but the Iowa Hawkeyes are the defending national champions, six returning All-Americans while we're in Carver, Hawkeye, and there's still the arena and they're trying to break the record.
So, you know, they have a lot to be proud of, but they also going to have a tough match here tonight.
So they got Charlie Font, they got Alex searches, they got Joey Slayton, Jay Baruchel, Phil Keddie.
They're all, you know, returning all-American.
So that led by Brett Metcalf.
So, you know, those guys follow brains around and they're still here.
Every time we get together with Iowa and Iowa State, there's some kind of surprise.
It's a history of upsets.
What do you think about it tonight, Jim?
Well, you saw that in the open.
What the all the surprises and the falls.
And we really don't know for sure.
But I'll tell you what looks like a great what.
This is the most competitive in the most difficult environment to keep competing in any sport.
And now we've got 16,000 screaming Iowa fans at Iowa State comes in here with a very talented team.
Tell you what, this whole environment makes me proud to be part of this wrestling tradition in Iowa.
Dan Gable, I'll give you the last word.
What about tonight?
Well, I think it's going to come down to a lot of things and the bottom line is that all the experts have it very close.
And the only way it wouldn't be very close if somebody won all the close ones.
So and I don't think that's going to happen here.
But it could.
So right now, I'm telling you, it's hard to predict.
Well, we're not going to predict, but we're going to show you the lineups right now and the lineup.
We're going to start at 125 tonight, £125 between Charlie Funk, returning all-American upstart Tyler Clark, two All-Americans named fan Thorpe for Iowa State versus Slayton, or Daniel Dennis.
We don't know who yet.
141 Galic versus third 649 Mueller versus Metcalf.
157 Tyler Sanderson Hails Brother versus Matt Bulwark.
And then at 165 up weight class from last year, Ryan Morningstar for Iowa versus John Reeder 174 Jay Baruchel returning all-American up against Duke.
Duke Burke, Philip Kenney, 184 pounder for Iowa versus Jerome Ward at 197.
Jake Varner up from 184, where he's twice been a national runner up versus one of three Lofthouse, Brady or Alora.
And then 285 heavyweight.
We've got Zabriskie from Iowa State versus Dan Erickson.
And what's great to see about that is all those great numbers behind both those names.
I mean, you take a look at these two teams by historical standards, I mean, is as good as it gets.
Number one of the nation.
It's as good as it gets.
And history is going to be made.
Hopefully.
But if it's not, you know, one of those things this close.
We'll talk to us about the history that's already been made tonight here with the crowd.
Well, we don't know yet.
We think that's what that one of the history of the state above us has that record.
And we have to sell you a couple more tickets and we'll find out a little later.
But we're close.
We have standing room only and I see standing room only people.
So looks good.
And what we're talking about is the all time world record for college wrestling.
Dual Meet Minnesota has a record 15,695, something like that.
Yeah.
And fire marshals have opened it up and said you can put 16,000 in here.
If you can put 16,000, I'd say, well, within a few.
And so history in the making and very appropriate with Iowa Iowa State fact has been out there.
Yeah the media center the math of course Iowa State has a new look here this year with the with the cardinal and gold uniforms.
The big one looks like kind of what they've done in football with Iowa.
Looks like a blackout tonight.
A lot of black T-shirts.
Right.
And they got some flags to fill, rags they're not going to throw around.
And they're starting out at 125.
That's right.
Starting out at 145 is the all-American Charlie Ball on offense.
Tyler Clark, the referee is Mike Haggerty from Blue Springs, Missouri, a wrestling coach and a long time official, one of the best in the nation.
Tyler Clark, a sophomore, already ranked fifth in the country, undefeated on the year.
Charlie Fall going into his last campaign and finished sixth last year.
What a tough weight class that was at 125 last year, particularly in the big Ten.
Well, Faulk, he just has come along so well.
I think he started as a true freshman.
And you just saw him gain strength.
A read your ear helped him.
And Tyler Clark is kind of where Faulk was a couple of years ago, wouldn't you say?
Yeah, I would really say that because maybe learning how to become a disciplined wrestler out there, I think that's what Faulk has done, is it has got more aggressive, more controlled, very close to beating and hell.
Escovedo and the complete supporters of the semis really close matching through it and that's to beat ends up being the national champ too.
Exactly.
He was up and he got bear hug inside trip there for four and he was looked like he was going to win the match.
He really was controlling it.
And so he's just, you know, matter of seconds of being away from an NCAA finalist and end up finishing sixth, though this is a big test for Clark May The Wrestler are really open enough yet they're feeling each other out a little bit.
Yeah.
Did you see this The setups they're mean.
I really think that Clark who likes to go to that they're a single late shot right there and that's the shot that Clark and the link to Clark leads.
So it looks like this nice job of pulling off now, perhaps situation.
This is deep road.
No back bottom.
Kyle Clark did a great job of coming off his back.
Yes, he did.
I mean, it was not even a count, even though he was thrown to his back.
He got off it in a hurry.
And that's what makes ball so dangerous.
He came in on that single leg and looked like Clark was all but out squared his hips.
But his hips were a little bit too close.
And with those long arms of his, he's able to show his range and stuff that it looks like the gentleman gets a takedown and that takedown is worth two points.
It's two zero for Falcon, I would say.
Wouldn't you?
That that's the difference between Charlie Fall three years ago.
He couldn't have done that.
Didn't have the strength.
I don't think so here.
Right.
Because, you know, that wasn't easy.
Clark looks like he's muscled up a little bit and he's got a pretty good job of stopping that for a while.
Just stayed with it.
All right.
Now, nice job of bouncing off and just limiting that to a takedown here.
But beautiful technique by fall.
Tyler Clark is a sophomore from Davenport, Iowa, went to Bettendorf High School.
Charlie Falk, a senior from Strawberry Point, Iowa, but he did his prep wrestling and Apple Valley, Minnesota, where he was a four time state champion.
I think this is where Hoff, being the senior here, wants to stay in the top position here as long as possible.
Clark's not moving too much.
He's just kind of based out.
So it's yeah, makes it easy to right somebody that way, but it makes it hard to look like you're doing anything.
And when you say basing out, you see how wide his knees are away from his hips.
He's wide bass working out.
Fork's not going to let him go easily here.
So Clark really has to work a nice job there.
Now he's back in on a shot of his own.
We're not good guys.
We're neutral wrestling.
Kind of wasn't kind of muscle in the leg there.
Instead of driving and penetrating, he's using his arms too much and you got extend extended force using a good hip leverage.
Exactly correct.
Here you get your ten.
You got in there and got his shoelaces flat and lost his drive.
That was one point for Tyler Clark for an escape there.
So the score is 2 to 1 favorite, Charlie Parker, 15 seconds left in the first period.
But Fox does have a minute for riding time.
How clearly a stalemate situation.
But, you know, being down there underneath there on that late shot for a while, that's an advantage fall here making Clark work.
Clark is really had to work hard not only to get off his back there on that takedown, but also to get out.
He really used a lot of energy there.
Right.
Look like, you know, just need a little more penetration because he in on the leg good.
But he just kind of stopped and hung on, dropped down to his knees.
And then here forgets the choice he chooses down.
There's no deferring about things.
Charlie Fox says, I want to go under and I want to take it.
Well, I tell you, this is real important.
Ten or 15 seconds here, locked out for either side to see if they can establish some kind of dominance in the match one way or the other.
Already 104 riding time here for Fox.
So it looks like you to be able to break that for Iowa State.
Coming back in on a leg here we'll scramble situation and this is wonderful with red we still riding but you know it's going to be tough to break that grip.
It's tough to break the grip, but you really make.
And Clark underneath work hard and he's got his elbows up above his his head.
And he's really working hard and look with the great job that Fox is doing, keeping his hips low and his chest up, that's making Clark work hard.
He's going to have a hard time breaking that grip.
He's getting right in time.
So it's racing that writing time.
And it's really a tough situation, actually.
If Clark if Teague is isn't a factor, you know that that helped him same way right now fatigue doesn't look like we're going to just match shorts.
Let's keep it that way.
Locked down green.
No movement set in tight.
Read it.
You, Clark.
Starting on the right hand side here.
Nice.
Trying to work the leg in with both legs in key here.
He's going to try to keep his arms underneath fox armpits right there and stretch him out.
Pens whether fall can reach down and grab a leg, which I don't think he's getting.
You know, he's got to create some hip separation here.
He's fighting it off, grabbing the inside out.
He's got to limping a little bit to one side or the other.
He's getting his head now.
He's getting high there.
All comes right back in and it's time he's not able to use his hands.
They're still getting the right time, though, guys.
Still getting the right time.
And he's going to end up trying to get a stalemate, say, yes, he's got it looks like he's got he's got that.
Leaving Marcus to continue to move up.
I just don't understand that.
I mean, when you look back, I do not understand why that was he at one point.
Now I do.
But that's not the situation.
It was that that is there's still work and there's still getting the right time for that.
I tell you, Lifetime, it's he should break it.
Our referee is really slow on the stalemates here.
He was slow on that call.
He's almost going to get two here.
There's two right there.
One, I tell you what, it was a tight situation.
I did not think that was it correctly called, but it was just a slow call there because, well, you know, he had it whether it was or wasn't, it was a tough call.
It's definitely a tough call.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Breakdown.
As a result, though, he's able to go ahead and finish that the period fall with the reversal.
And you know, it's 41 matches.
Dan you got to you know, you finish the period on top.
You really got to be all right Righty time's not a factor right now except for Iowa State that he's got 31 seconds now on the other side, even though he's down four one.
So it could be a factor if he could escape and get a takedown.
4 to 1 in favor.
Charlie Faulk, starting the third period, there's no riding time advantage for either wrestler.
Tremendous ride by Tyler Clark in that second period.
But right at the end, Charlie Parker is able to get out and score a reversal.
Well, that's the most difficult thing to do in the sport is to be able to get out from a good leg wrestler's legs.
And it looks like those legs were in pretty tight and pocket a nice job of just methodically being patient, creating some hip separation and getting the reversal.
So smart here, getting this right in time to a situation where if he does escape, the bottom line gets taken down, he can't get the minute right in time.
So, well, he got plenty of room laterals.
Clark is really no show, no on the bottom.
He blow barrier head like that, bring your hips up like that.
You're really not putting any back pressure into the man and really pretty easy to follow and drift with with your opponent.
He's up there in way.
You know, you take it sitting in the corner here, you're taking it.
And now the officials call the match.
And these are very slow stalemate situations, which means that riding time is going to extend a little bit further.
Charlie Falk from Iowa coming on top, the favorite, these are earning all-American, the higher ranked wrestler ahead 4 to 1 here with a minute, 6/3 period.
I don't know if you've mentioned the referees yet, but they're both highly ranked and there's no system for picking the Big 12 and Big Ten referees this year.
And I think it's Charlie is in charge of that great guy.
So he's probably Mike Haggerty is one of the great referees in the nation and Gary Meyer from the same area, Kansas City area, both of them from the Kansas City area.
And they do a lot of officiating And of course, this is much like you'd see at a national wrestling tournament where you have two officials refereeing a match, say, judge in a lead official.
The lead official is just, as you said, the lead official.
What he says goes, look at that.
Look at that.
He's got a chance.
Fortitude, That's an escape for Tyler Clark.
It's 4 to 2.
There is no riding time.
A takedown would tie the match.
Now.
Clark was able to get in the shot.
A nice job again by Hall, getting his hips back.
There is no warning for stalling.
20 seconds.
He's in on the leg again.
He's able to see if he's in tight.
He's in tight?
No, it's how he went to his own elbow there instead of two true guns.
The time to get it done, it's close is about 3 seconds to go.
Let's go.
Good.
Start to this match.
Tough match.
Both wrestlers wrestled harder all the way to the end.
Buck wins for the two makes the score Iowa 380. Who's coming out for the half?
We know who's coming off of the Cyclones.
We don't know who's coming out for the Hawks either.
Be Joe Slayton, the NCAA runner up last year.
I don't know what was Francis Daniel Dennis is Dennis.
I don't know either or.
Those are the two fellows and weighed in, ready to wrestle at 133.
Oh is there a junior big fan for the junior eighth ranked fifth and eight.
Wow.
Joey Slater.
Yeah.
Wow.
You've been the national runner up.
Why?
When you say wow, Dan, what do you mean?
I didn't use it?
I've been around much.
Joe Slayton ranked number one and two of the major poles, the other pole ranking.
Dennis because he's been wrestling more than Slayton.
So he wrestles spending a lot of time.
133 for the Hawkeyes and Tom Brandt sends out Joe Slayton No, no, no, against Nick Farnsworth from Iowa.
Both I think that's terrific.
Wow, That's a pretty great guy.
Joe Slayton patented.
I tell you that the elbow pass by.
He just does this consistently.
He gets a hold of an opponent's right elbow.
He passes it through, he goes right into a shot and then hold it.
Very impressive.
Take hold.
He just joined us.
Iowa leads three oh, Charlie Faulkner won 25 pounder, beat Tyler Clark, 4 to 2.
We're in the second match at £133.
Joe Slayton, last year's NCAA runner up for Iowa, out in front fast with a20 lead, a quick takedown over Nick Fan four also returning all-American, who placed fifth for Iowa State last year.
These two wrestled in the quarterfinals, I believe, at the national tournament last year, and Match went to overtime, of course, And last year Slayton was able to get up, come out and get a big win.
At that time, Farnsworth is rated higher than Slate.
And Slate just came out, shot out of a can and got two takedowns in the first period.
Much like today.
Movement recovery up.
Let's go.
So Slayton owns a20 lead over fan Thorpe in their two matches Previous, If I would have guessed, I would have thought brands would have sent out no change.
Dennis Based on just what time of the year it is.
But you know what?
Brands is really competitive, you know, and he's going to sell this.
He's got an arena here full of people.
He's going to do what he thinks is needed to win this meet.
Exactly.
That's I mean, you've got the NCAA runner up here that's get him in Phantom from Naperville, Illinois, North High School, a junior, Joe Slayton, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Kennedy High School went to Virginia Tech to join Tom Brands when Coach Brands was out of Virginia Tech, transferred back here on with three other Virginia Tech wrestlers who are in the lineup the last year and this year for Iowa.
We'll talk about that as we go along.
I think both these wrestlers do a good job of fighting for head position.
You see that slight holding position right here.
He likes to go out that elbow tie passes.
It gets in on that right leg of Fanny Thorpe.
And then Fan Thorpe is more of kind of a swing single guy.
And right now it's very difficult to get that swing single.
Wow.
Landed on his head.
Yeah, he just totally commits to that.
Once he gets that elbow tight, just totally commits to it.
I mean, it was like his head bounced off the mat and he did it himself.
I think there's another guy on the Iowa team that does that.
Mike Zadeh probably learned it from there.
Action here can be the one with 25 seconds left in the first period here of the £133 match, the scores 2 to 1 in favor of Joe Slayton for Iowa with early takedown fans or pick skates.
All right.
You know, I see what you're talking about.
Looks of a flush right now.
He does he his color is even looks like it's a weight cutting thing this earlier in the year while he probably didn't do it as early as he should have.
And so right now he's kind of he's starting to get adjusted.
But it's one of those things that red take down for Fant or puts him ahead 3 to 2.
Going into the second period.
Fan Thorpe gets a choice and he chooses down It seemed a little easy.
Yeah, just seemed a little easy.
Here we go.
That's counter shot that wasn't there.
Easy spin around.
So you know, that could be attention.
You know focus.
It could be whether he's ready to go or not.
You know, find out, I guess, whatever it is, it's a huge confidence builder.
That was a caution on fan thought.
Fun underneath.
He jumped the gun.
Mike Haggerty puts a caution on to Phantom.
That's his first one.
Escape from Thorpe makes the score 4 to 2 in favor of the cyclone here early in the second period.
Kim Johnson, along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons, Iowa State here, Carver, Hawkeye Arena and Iowa City, £133.
Iowa leads three 0 to 5 and two more prevent or it just doesn't seem to have his legs under him.
Now, this is not the same guy we saw last year at the national tournament.
This is actually actually got him in a pinning situation here.
The turn got the turkey elevated, bottom lip bottom hits the turn backward, follow.
He's getting back point and he's close to being in.
He is putting the pressure on three points back point for fans Thorpe the scores 9 to 2 Don't things change in a hurry didn't it really did and then the match isn't over yet either.
Got 3 minutes to draw Russell yet?
Well, I'll tell you what, the cyclone bench is wanting a stalling call here and we'll certainly pay a lot of attention to see how this is called going forward.
One storm warnings going on, the Iowa wrestler Joe Slayton, underneath behind 9 to 2.
And Fan Thorpe is just really putting a lot of pressure at the inside risk, trying to drive far risk going back and forth, one side to the other.
This bench has made a decision here.
The Iowa State bench made a decision to stay in the top position for only 20 seconds, left less than that right here.
Well, they're looking pretty tough there.
And they actually have turned him once and almost turned him again.
So this is not the same guy we saw last year.
You're talking right now isolating Iowa's 133 pounder who was an NCAA runner up last year behind got a stalling point at the end.
One point, Joe Slayton for stalling Nick Fan Thorpe leads tend to go going in the third period over the last years NCAA runner up Ben Thorpe of course with fifth last year two Americans going at it right there.
You see the second angle on the rear.
He's got the leg elevated, forced the hips turn the back, will follow on that near your leg.
Target set.
That's where he got all the back points.
So I think that, you know, the cyclones have got to be considering major scores already, tend to a quick takedown by Joe Slick Slayton put himself ahead 2 to 0 but it's all been Nick fan Thorpe since you're out in front tend to he's got riding time.
Well as easy as things were on the feet for fans or appears kind of strange to be able to go ahead and he's he's really working hard in the top position but you've got to be thinking bonus points for your team if you're cheering for the Cyclones.
But well, they got the bonus right now.
Yeah, they do, but the and I'll think Joe is looking like he's going to go too many places here.
Oh man.
I see what you're asking Jim, because it's like how much could Joe Slayton ward off any takedown Attempts from the feet is what you're asking.
It doesn't look like he could take a look at the strategy.
They're not idiots.
Have to take a look at the bench.
You say, Oh, this is an opportunity.
He's talking, guys.
Keep working, maybe going by the wayside and maybe they're looking for the stalling calls more.
But that's not going to happen and it's not going to take you to your 15.
They're going to get one here, but that's probably the last one.
Maybe get you might get two more, but that would be 13.
So you might be able to get it on the back end and probably get two takedowns.
Well, no doubt then this is the first big surprise to me.
This is the well that surprised me is who went out there.
Yeah.
You're obviously a little bit know a little bit more about the inner workings here of the of the program.
That was a real big surprise here.
That is this is a competitive young man here not to see him in this condition here.
A little surprising.
Well, I know that Phantom's name was misspelled a couple of times in the paper this this week.
So he's people are going to know that his name Span thought, you know, it's a big win for him right here.
A big win for him.
And he did it in fashion That didn't look so good.
Yeah, he he had in a pounding and Clayton's head still on the mat and hard to get back to the middle the score with riding time 12 to 2 a major decision Nick fan Ben Thorpe puts the Cyclones on the board.
It's all tied up 3 to 3 going into £141.
Translation to Anthony Davis or not, and Robinson won it out in the opener.
They got a wrestling team after three or two matches.
The score is Iowa three and Iowa State four.
It's not tied Iowa State four with that major decision.
We'll be back with more college Did you make an impression tonight back at Carver Hawkeye Arena where Iowa State Cyclones lead the Iowa Hawkeyes 4 to 3 after two matches, 125 133.
Now we're at £141, a couple All-Americans going against each other.
Nick Galli, Junior is ranked second for the Cyclones, going against Alex Surface and all-American.
Two years ago for the Hawkeyes, a senior undefeated ranked third.
Another really big match here for the dual meet.
These two guys I think pretty evenly matched.
You know we we talked at 133.
I think maybe he dodged the bullet at 133 where the Hawkeyes because the Cyclones had it going and Van Thor probably could have disqualify side him with the stalling if they'd gone to their feet just from an observation there.
And so the real bullet that was dodged and we'll see how it works out, because I don't think there was any doubt that Phantom was on his way to a tech fall or or better.
Good point.
Last, but take a look at these two wrestlers.
I really thought and we kind of talked about this before the meet, Dan, is that this first period here is really important for the Hawkeyes in this match.
German garlic garlic's very dangerous.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He has some stuff that's really unusual and he can usually come out, take it to you in that first period in some situations, gets down and it's not over yet, though.
It's got to start one minute of the match here.
You two highly recruited preps, Garlic, a four time state champion undefeated from Arizona, searches for a state champion undefeated from Indiana, coming into what is now the two top programs in America, number one and number two.
And it's a pivotal match here in the meet between Iowa State and Iowa here in Carrboro, Hawkeye Cyclones lead 4 to 3 after two matches.
Good move last year to get a redshirt for Alex Success.
I thought he got a wrestler in Dan Leclaire that was coming over here with Tom from Virginia Tech and had a great season last year, just only a match or two away from being an all-American, real strong Big Ten tournament.
But the one minute, one final game kind of cat and mouse here, a little bit here.
Yeah.
And I think that favors garlic right now because garlic's an explosive wrestler now position in the feet, maybe a little bit stronger there.
Garlic had a big win earlier about a week and a half ago in the all star exhibition in such a sitting next 10 to 12 months.
No he hit that he hit really hit it the right angle.
We didn't have to do hardly anything here Finish knocked him right to his butt.
Very nice.
Two zero in favor of the Hawkeyes.
Search is back in the lineup after a year hiatus.
all-American two years ago as a junior took a redshirt year escape for garlic.
And this doesn't go down 2 to 1 in favor of searches, Alex.
Searches the senior for the Hawkeyes over the junior Nick Garlic I call dispatch.
And the £65 match is probably the most too pivotal that I that I feel like ends up with with that extra bonus point for Iowa State.
I think it's really even more concern for the Hawkeyes on this one.
The first the first was the takedown.
Here it comes in on a single it does a great job to get the angle that he stops over is garlic overcommitted drop low and got the double leg down for me Red you get a guy that low with two legs tied up and holding.
All right, calf roping, all ready.
I actually look like a John Smith takedown or a Kale Sanderson takedown where you just don't have any counters.
No Wizards right here, but surges comes on top.
He deferred the opportunity to choose it.
And so garlic goes down.
We go.
Still green.
I like a pretty good wrestler on the mat.
He's got to be got to get some right in time they're down otherwise a delicate tough rider ad right now 38 seconds of riding time here for success.
I really am probably important for his stock here to be able to get over at least a one minute riding time.
And now he's got the leg and hips are down on the Gallic.
Put the leg in.
Yeah.
He's obviously pretty potent here.
Gallic perhaps looking for a reversal here.
More than an escape.
There's your minute.
He gets that leg out, he's going to be able to escape.
He gets that leg out.
He's reaching back, working hard on it.
Search is approaching a minute.
In the second period that he has ridden he's minute 15 advantage now, which is really big in this match, which he leads like search.
This leads the cyclone on the bottom.
All right.
The one search is now has a two on one wrist rides.
That's very tough here to allow this search is to go ahead and put that leg in a little bit deeper.
He's getting his hips down and his head up.
Very knowledgeable crowd wondering what's going here.
They know that arm and that leg's coming out.
That leg's coming out.
Yeah, that one goes up to one point.
A skate wisely gives up on there.
Minutes of riding time advanced age for Alex Search.
It's a good ride.
He gives up the escape.
The scores, 2 to 2 on the scoreboard.
15 seconds left in the second period.
Well, not much time left in this period, but it's really decision time for searches.
It's talking about the strength of a guy.
Like what?
Up?
Right.
What he should do here.
This is going to be a really good call for the bench to make or for Alex to make.
He goes down.
He didn't even look over to the bench he is now, but he already had chosen down three down.
Well, he stays down on the mat.
He's going to be in trouble if he gets to his feet.
I think he's going to be fine.
So that's going to be the key down here.
Listening to Dan Gable, Jim Gibbons, I'm Tim Johnson, bringing you a great interest date meet between Iowa State and Iowa.
4 to 3 lead for Iowa State.
The team no no move on the bottom off the whistle now they still pretty compact in here.
That's why I like the position he's in searches and down position here.
He's still pretty compact and even the legs all right now.
Yeah, he's blocking out but the right in times ticking down there is a committed right leg move right there.
Put the leg in.
He's got to make a movement.
Yeah.
And he's really hasn't made too many explosive moments and the right time going to be raised here shortly.
Well, he's gotten his arm right behind his back and see how he's got that set up.
Gorelick, Iowa State wrestler.
Now he's got the leg lock.
He's very tough in this top position.
The top.
Wow.
He could come across here.
Oh, he's got he's got know over the top.
Oh, boy.
The referee, Mike and the call on that.
Anyway.
Well, you got to allow the wrestler a chance to turn his hips here the back and follow.
Right now, Search is doing a nice job keeping his hips flat belly button to the mat just to want to get him in is still want a gallop does not want to stop this match at this point that is going to get a potentially official.
Well, you know 2 to 2 and that is the score.
There is no riding time advantage.
Dallas can get right to them and got it cannot get right in time.
Well, first this official got the message you can't stay down underneath here if you're going to win this match.
You've got to get out from underneath.
Fans are on the verge of who they will be, is explosive and they want surface to get to him.
At this point in the match go.
Athletes are slick.
Grab the little bit loose.
Okay.
There's the way he comes in.
Well, I'll tell you Galli came around Did a great job of Dallas to get his 30 seconds left.
Plenty of time to be able to get out.
Sorry, This is behind the galaxy, right lane.
It depends on whether garlic's behind the arms or not, but he's over the arm.
He's in trouble.
I think he's in trouble.
Look at the time Sid went up.
Time could run out.
There was only 10 seconds.
Oh, he's coming.
He's coming.
I haven't got it yet.
He hasn't got it yet.
He hasn't got it yet.
He had, he didn't get it.
He got it.
He didn't go, he got it in game one.
He won the match.
He won the match with his time.
That is one second to go.
He won the match.
He won it.
He won it.
It was tight, but it was it looked like that was the correct call.
Looked like it.
Obviously, I didn't think was going to get it out.
I really didn't either.
But it's a timeless target.
Here's what he does.
He gets up on to his feet.
All right, pops up out of there, crater angle position.
Right before that, he got up by the receiver circle.
Chuck, Chuck, Chuck.
That popped it out when you got that was obviously a much needed win by the Hawkeyes, but a tough, tough match.
Early.
I thought Catholic did a wonderful job of holding on as long as he did.
Yeah, he really did.
Good Surface was just fantastic here, coming out from the back door there, shaking him off after three matches.
Iowa goes ahead 6 to 4 with that last second win.
Here's Mitt they come out against really this is tight bottom right cradle potentially there could have followed up with the turf.
He's got that by looking outside.
Mueller's a tough kid.
He's not going to go over easy.
Brett Metcalf out of Davidson, Michigan by way of Virginia Tech with Tom Branson now back into Iowa, where he won a national championship last year, was the Hodge Trophy as the most valuable wrestler in the nation, one of America's best right now, Brant Metcalf, 149 pounder up against Mueller, who is from Iowa City wrestling for Iowa State.
And he's ranked high.
Two highly ranked wrestlers going at it.
A quick takedown for Metcalf puts him ahead 2 to 1, Iowa out in front, 6 to 4 after three matches, a last second victory for surface.
Alex searches over Nick GARLICK for a 3 to 2 win.
When I say last second, it was the last sack last half second.
I think there's another shot by Metcalf who like this.
I suppose he's penetrating this easily.
I know he's easy.
He had a tough time with Mueller in a couple of matches, but.
But Metcalf seems to be improving on his skills and his techniques.
Here's a nice sweep.
Elevates that leg it right there at the edge of the mat.
And, you know, obviously his setups are much better than what we saw last year.
And a lot of times he would just pound through and just pound through a guy here and instead, of course, much more clean and is even as you get caught with his head down after three great matches so far, guys, I mean, all six wrestlers have fought to the end.
It's been very, very close.
Well, I don't what we expected.
I don't know where this is going here as far as the meet goes.
But I tell you what, 2i2.
Yeah, you're right.
Yeah, Two great matches, of course.
Joe Slayton getting the major, but hundred and 2541.
Very close.
These are two very good teams.
And the way they're going out here, here's another potential pinning situation here with the three quarter Nelson.
I think they do that at Michigan.
He's a michigan boy from high school seven.
And those boys used to get that head up there.
You know, this weight class kind of cleared out a little bit, quite a bit from what it was last year.
So it gives a guy like Mueller an opportunity to go up here and really do some damage for your team.
And that's why he's ranked as high as he is.
I just this is a tough duty catching Metcalf at home any time.
Six two, three, three.
Takedown for Metcalf in the first period, three escapes for Mueller.
You look at Iowa City go, wow, he really cut the corner.
Well, just about in the corner.
Well, he really did.
And he came off the inside collar tie up there and he just saw Cal Sanderson do that quite a bit.
Get the corner off that inside collar time.
Great technique back side you pretty good on your finishes you skied them but you're pretty good at cutting the corners.
Well you have to cut the corner if you're going to go here trying to get down.
Yeah.
Only one count though Metcalf getting back points and we're going to decide where they were.
Two Or three.
It should be two two points because the time ran out.
You know, you don't have to count with your hands visually.
You can count in your head.
It can be the second.
You know, it's nice to do it that way, but keep it cleaner.
Now, Metcalf finishes off that first period with this takedown.
You're going to see Loctite just does a great job of cutting the corner.
There's really excellent, you know, dropping his level.
Once he's penetrating the man, he's going to head on getting out to the corner.
Here we call cutting it the corner, cut in the corner and a lot of his opponents really don't have much fight left when they get when he gets on that leg break.
Metcalf finished off the first period with two point fall, and so he's out in front 10 to 4 after the first period.
Fakes an alternative start, pushes Mueller away, gives him one, goes back to his feet.
We're talking about Brant Metcalf out in front.
Thank you, guys.
Thank you.
Bye.
Knock him out on that shot there.
Hit his head.
He's got to turn the head a little more with his knee.
Otherwise it could potentially dangerous.
Miller's a tough kid, but, you know, he's he's having to take on a very, very tough kid.
12 four in favor of Brett Metcalf, the number one ranked undefeated defending NCAA champion for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And he does have that back point.
So, you know, from a technical point of view, the difference being four and five points, too, that makes a big difference.
But and that's the direction it looks like he's going.
There's an escape for Mueller not getting much of a meal.
It's not getting too much of a shot.
It's not like look like Joey a little bit.
SLATEN When he was making that shot, just a little bit.
Yeah, better than that, though, because he was bouncing off the mat.
But the difference in the two matches here is that Metcalf is basically going back up to the feet every time there's an opportunity to make Mueller look bad.
In fact, Mueller's got some fight in there.
He's taking some shots, but it's one and done That one point was a technical violation because Metcalf's hand ended up inside the knee pad of Mueller, and basically it was accidental, but he was grabbing the knee pad, so they called it.
So it's one more point.
MUELLER And, you know.
METCALF just kind of frowned.
He's seen it all.
He's undone by nothing.
Takedown 214 to 630 seconds left in a second.
Here it is.
He said he's going to be really releasing again, kind of like what you were talking about right now.
He still had the time, but because it's going to be tough to get that many takedowns in the third period, Miller is no slouch at all.
And he hasn't hit the wall yet either.
No, he's still battled down there.
That's that's the difference.
I mean, he's not flat on his belly.
He's not flush either.
I mean, you could tell that with Joe Slayton inside a minute.
Yeah.
He looked a different color.
And in the second period, the score, 14 to 6 in favor of Brett Metcalf, rival Highway 149.
He's also got a time that cannot be overtaken.
So he's actually up by nine.
Is going to it's going to take it's going to take a huge effort to get a tech fall.
But he's in a position like the Hawks over the Cyclones, 6 to 4 after three matches.
We're in the fourth match of the night in this big history making meet.
We will find the the attendance out soon to see if it's a new world record for college dual meets.
It's Tim.
I don't see any empty seats.
I'm looking around here and this is just a great environment locked down.
We're back to the center after Mueller took a time out to Metcalf underneath to start the third period nice job of getting his hips out here.
One escape and that makes the score 15 to 6.
It's a good job.
It's a swinging around here.
He able to take down.
He can't escape to take it.
Keep this up.
He's going to get it.
But he can't waste time right there.
So that's a big difference.
And he's not one to waste.
Yeah, he's just Miller is just making this shot set up like that.
That was actually not such a good shot by Metcalf.
But he did have a follow up to take down called Three Takedowns in the last 40 seconds.
So he may end up getting the tech call.
He keeps this up.
21 291 escape for Mueller Stalling on Mueller Warning Stalling takedown.
Metcalf two points.
That might be it.
One more yellow, 23 to 10 right now.
That's right.
25 to 10 masters over.
Matches over.
Brett Metcalf, 149 pounder puts five points on the board for the Hawkeyes, five points on the board for the Hawkeyes.
Technical foul.
He had the back points.
Wow.
Leveling good basketball right there in such great condition.
This can go, go, go to a tech fall for Brett Metcalf to score Iowa 11.
Iowa State four one after the first four matches are approaching the halfway point, the fifth half of the night, 157 Tyler Sanderson has that for the Hawkeyes.
It's Matt Leg, a sophomore.
Tyler Sanderson, A junior?
Yes.
Three ball.
He's a sophomore.
Sanders is in on and quickly and scoring Sanderson Thank God brother of Cale Sanderson out of Heber City Utah able to get on that low ankle pick looks just like his older brother.
They're just getting in and driving all the way through.
Sanderson with the early takedown goes out to over Matt Ball Wiggins, the sophomore from Waverly, Iowa Waverly Shell Rock High School right in that ankle top of that opposite side right there.
This ball is probably first big match time on the ball for ball week in a Hawkeye uniform, 24 matches earlier in the season.
Well, he came out of that great Well Waverly Shell Rock program here that's just really got it on a roll and getting controlled here pretty good heads down their butts up and just ankles It's just getting ridden.
Sanderson gives Baldwin a point for an escape.
Probably the smartest.
The way he's been controlling the match basically was able to get right in on that shot right away.
And so you you think that a few more of those are in the deck.
He's got that little Sanderson shuffle that he has kind of brought back some memories with Cale.
I think he's he's probably if all the Sanderson brothers will most mean Cale was consistently offensive, but he just really commits on his shot.
Cale was able to pick out here and he'll throw.
But sometimes that Sanderson, just when he gets the hips, he just really drives through.
Fun to watch.
He just got a shot there of Cale Sanderson, head coach of the Iowa State Cyclones, his brother Cody, assistant coach, sitting beyond silent now their brother out on the mat in the middle.
Kyler Sanderson, the junior, the last of the Sanderson brothers.
Nice, nice shot from the left hand side that time.
Nice.
Which switches off to a double and two points.
Take a look.
Easy, easy.
Score Four, two.
One minute left in the first period.
Tyler Sanderson for the Cyclones out in front already has right in time as well.
He's letting him go again.
He's had his way pretty easy on the field.
He's thinking, Well, you know, I'm going to think about the team here a little bit too.
But of course his coach is his older brother and he better think about it again.
Oh, here we go.
Read on.
There's the take down here again, left handed, high crotch it.
Stay in there.
Come on.
I think he's one of the few guys I've seen who can go high crotch left.
High crotch.
Right.
You know, with good power not needing some guys just duck to one side and high crotch to the other.
But he's got he's got good power.
I got one for you.
I can tell you one that can do it.
Who's that?
Penrith.
Brad Penrith could do it.
Yeah, but it's rare.
I know it's rare.
There is one escape from all.
But Jim, you've been talking to me.
I mean, your dad made you go left right drills.
I mean, it starts young or the muscle memory doesn't happen.
Yeah, and most guys are just, you know, single leg to the right, high crotch to the left.
You know, they.
Boy, just beautiful shot there again, left handed has three and got two more points.
Scores 6 to 2 now 15 seconds left in the first period.
It's the same move but you're doing it on both sides, you know, and it's like you got to move it and you never know which way the guy is going to lead.
And obviously, if you're good with the lead leg, it helps.
And so he leads.
You're good with.
And I thought that, you know, when I watch Kael Russell that over the years and he did a great job of disguising his left leg you know, he kept shooting a good start.
Hey, here's a drop drive coming through green down tight gets his head up and I'm working close.
Here we go.
We've really seen some good finishes in this match so far.
At the end of the first period, Tyler Sanderson for the Cyclones out in front, 6 to 2, a very dominating first period against Red Bull wig from Iowa.
Ball says he will choose flames.
All I can think of you end up letting go.
Matt Bowl wig out of Waverly Shell Rock High School, a sophomore in the lineup for the Hawkeyes for the first time in his career on a regular basis, Ryan Morningstar moved up to 165.
We'll see him.
Here's another takedown attempt for Tyler Sanderson.
It's a reversal or take take it down.
Got the escape takedown.
Makes the score 8 to 3.
He's really clear in the arms, getting by the arms and there's no defense there.
And you know, when guy gets by your arms, that's usually all legs unless you got your head there.
And that's why you do a drill.
Call the down blocking drill.
And obviously he's getting by the down blocking, he's getting by the arms, nothing but legs.
And it's pretty easy to finish when you're a guy that's used to it.
And when you talk about down blocking, we saw a great example of that with Metcalf here, where look like Mueller got his bell rung a little bit.
He just pushed everything down, his hips came down and his feet were exploding backwards.
So not much of a reaction for football week.
Once Sanderson gets in there, he's got to lower his head position.
That's that's real key And he's great.
Legs 3.3.
All right he looks the bottom leg gets the two takedown He's got that Got that finish down really well clean up the back 10 to 4.
Sanderson a lot of riding time advantage a lot of time left in the first or second period.
49 seconds same way right ball wig.
I think you're going to see it go down.
I think you're going to see Sanderson come out in the front here and work front.
Headlock Red kick home I think Ball We needs to think more about offense a little bit.
Maybe try to set something up guys, when he gets on his feet instead of just trying to keep.
Don't get taken down because he's not doing a good job.
Look at the communication here between wrestler and coach, brother and brother here and he come right up on a horse.
He's got the head and arm tied up right now.
He's looking for back points, definitely thinking back points in this situation, maybe try to suck ball way back and then lock a leg in after that.
Right Ball We get a nice job of hand fighting there.
One point escape, 10 to 5, 30 seconds left in the second period thing.
It's interesting, even though the score is your offense, Dan, and you need to finish.
So you need to finish because that would put you back in the match somewhat.
But he did.
He's hanging on.
He didn't have that job.
Look at this.
Cradle locked up after losing it.
Yeah, Yeah.
Always let go of that wisely.
Yeah.
Forward did a good job of the different right.
You know the difference when he got in that ankle though he was got it.
He stopped for a second and he didn't react to Sanderson's move.
And so Sanderson got a very good position on him on the side to voids there for that takedown for Sanderson makes the score 12 to 5 at the end of the second period.
To go in the third period, 12 five.
Lots of riding time.
Where are we going?
Down.
Red says down.
We need a good start, guys.
Read down.
So it's actually 13 to 5 anymore.
That's a major movement.
Green four pointer, the quick shot to elbow.
Here we go.
Ready?
Well he gets it ended like that All this position he's pretty strong and he's pretty good rider and I was surprised he didn't stay with it.
I'm surprised to see I mean one point escape.
It's a confidence factor, you know.
Yeah, it is.
And he just he was backed out of that and he's kind of thinking I'm not going to get give up the big move here.
But the meantime, you know, he did react there a little bit.
Not there, though.
Cut off two more points take down and we're getting school I was getting school there on that dumb defense.
Sanderson's thinking back point, you can tell, but the clock running here, we're out.
Not present.
Come on, gentlemen.
Let's get some encouragement from the bench.
But I think they're thinking back points.
Need another good start now?
They're going to go freestyle, start green.
No movement, Red optional start.
15, five minute 19 left in the third and final period.
Carter Sanderson, now 15 six on the single cut off from the double, ten points like that.
Doing what Metcalf did to Mueller, two more points.
Looks like a replay here.
And the last except there's no back points, except there's no back points.
And that's what they're talking about here from the sidelines.
You got to have back points.
That's a difference of a 1.1 ten point drop.
You don't start to give him space.
He's got to get it before he gets 15 points ahead.
What I mean, he's got to get the back points first.
Now, I mean, it's kind of like 19 to 8 now right here.
Sanderson is thinking, how can I turn him to his back?
Right.
Right.
Ooh, that's in there hitting the ball leg.
If he can hold on to this.
Here, have a little bit more clock.
That's really all that's happening at the head.
An arm tied up there has to pass to two points.
Takedown one escape, 21 to 9.
Do three.
That's the first all the way from Iowa.
One for stalling.
Just listen.
There's been so much action and so many quick finishes on this.
That's the first all learning in a normally you don't see that in a 21 two to actually 22 of writing time 22 to 9 match.
So Sanderson looking to get the next termination with another takedown two style points at this point that was the first time he actually kept his head equal with Patterson's.
He wasn't able to penetrate.
That's what I call that down blocking.
Oh, there's that last 15 seconds is something to build on right there for Baldwin.
But that match was all Sanderson, 22 to 9 was riding time.
Advantage gives the Cyclones four points, tightens the meet 11 to 8 in favor of Iowa after five matches.
Well, one minute intermission, 12 minute intermission.
And after five matches, the score is Iowa 11 and Iowa State eight.
We'll be back with more college wrestling in just a moment.
But for all the reasons why this is the right note, all that stuff out of the range that any time a winner declared in that match will be determined by a best of three ready, no one, I think Ryan gets 1.1.
Ryan is the winner of this one.
$400 in the high end gift card for Ryan, one of the best No.
$100 for winning the contest.
Thank you for many thank you to hire me for your support.
I were back at Carver Hawkeye Arena, where the Hawkeyes lead the Cyclones 11 to 8 after five matches.
And guys, what do you think Carl Sanderson is thinking right now, Jim?
Well, I think he's got to be pretty pleased.
I think he'd like to have one more second back and this might be a little bit different.
He'd like to see that 41 mile match go into overtime.
But as we mentioned in the call, I think Gallagher did a nice job holding on as long as he did in search of a wonderful job getting out from underneath.
But he's probably happy with four of his guys out there that went out there, competed and won 25.
It started real close.
And Charlie Falk won a close match against Tyler Clark.
Then at 133, of course, Nick Fan Thorpe did a job on Joey Slayton at 141.
You just talked about it.
And that's where Surface won a very close match against his galic.
And at 149, Metcalf wins big, Sanderson wins big.
What do you think Tom Brandes is thinking right now?
After five matches?
Dan Well, I don't think he's analyzing those matches right now.
I really don't, because it's nice to analyze that about Slate and then everything else has taken place.
But he's thinking about the next five matches, and if you're not, you're thinking about the wrong thing because you're going to have to win some of those matches.
This is too close, too good of a meet, and somebody could get pinned here or somebody could lose by major like we've already seen.
So you just don't know.
You know, you've got the number one ranked wrestler by a poll out there at 133 and comes out and gets that first takedown and then that was it.
I mean, so you just don't know exactly what's going to happen.
So you got to get your next five guys as prepared as you can.
And I'm sure that's what Sanderson's going to talk a little more about what's ahead.
And we'll be right back with more college wrestling in just a moment.
We're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena, the great rivalry between Iowa State and Iowa.
Iowa leads 11 eight after five matches.
And we'll take a little bit of a look at the highlights from the first five.
And we talked about it earlier and right here, we're taking a look at 125 one Charlie Falk here.
That was probably the big move when the match here came on a single leg up to the bear hug.
And Mark, nice job of fighting back in the match, but it was pretty much ball play.
And then this is the big match here that, you know, the big decision to bring Joe Slayton out here.
And it was one and done as far as takedowns and it became all fan Thorp and not the guy we're accustomed to seeing a 33 and then the big match here you see time running down here right at the one second mark, two point reversal, not much question there.
And you've got Brett Metcalf here to scoring at will be able to get back points would lots to that ball situation 510 points or the same then at 157 Tyler Sanderson does the job and brings the cyclones back up to a 11 eight score look like a lot like that course match but no back points or points for the cyclones there brought him from 11 to 4 to 11 to 8.
We talk about surprises, a couple of surprises.
What's the biggest surprise in the first five matches for you?
Well, I think the surprise, obviously, is the 133, right where the Iowa state bench did not go for the throat.
You know, basically trying to you got a guy who's down there and got a situation and we could get an extra ten point.
You already had the back points and let the match flow out there.
And that'll be pretty big here as far as that goes.
And we saw work 149 It did happen, Yeah.
Yep.
You know, I agree with you the same way class, but I agree I agree different agree different on, on your on Slate.
Well after five matches the score is Iowa 11 and Iowa State eight.
We'll be back with the start of the second half in just a moment.
Same thing.
We have some we're back at Carver High Hockey Arena.
The Cyclones History Trail, the Hawkeyes, 11 2805 And tonight's attendance.
There you have it.
An all time world record for collegiate dual meet tonight, 15,955.
Well, we bracket by half to 300.
So, you know, it's not bad.
I was getting nervous but without a proper on that day that wrestling record was big show here where were the 45 other people we could have visited here for 16,000?
I've got to leave a little room here for another time.
We're ready for £165 for Iowa State.
The sophomore, John Reeder, he's eight.
No, he's ranked third right for the Hawkeyes.
Ryan Morningstar, a junior.
He's eight.
No, he's ranked ninth.
This is the match that I along with 141 that I felt like with the big matches though, I'm a big these two I think are swing matches.
Hawkeyes won the 141.
I was really interested to see Ryan Morningstar and we spent a lot of time at the hundred and £57 weight class and he looks bigger this year and filling out in that way real nice.
You're just on first glance they have not wrestled because Ryan Morningstar up to 157.
John Reeder was at 165 last year, an all-American, returning all-American, only a sophomore, also out of Davison, Michigan.
Zarco same as Metcalf, same as Metcalf, or teammates.
I think Nebraska's Gibbs I only transferred to Donahoe.
Right.
And Davis and Davison, I think is another one from Indiana forever.
Perry Powerhouse high school programing Michigan and these two guys are going at it here ear to ear.
A little tough to get through that head hands, defense like that.
Both wrestlers like to go, you know, get on the attack.
Morningstar, I think really good probably the best Iowa wrestler from attacking from from the knee down here likes to go to that low single leg shot Ryan Morningstar not unfamiliar with winning big matches here against Iowa State as a freshman.
The upset Iowa State's Paulson, the eventual national champion that year.
So redshirt freshman being an eventual national champion.
Those are the things that happen here in this have happened here in this duel over the years.
I just a little surprised he's getting there in their ear to ear so much because he has a motion from the outside to to set up some swing shots and some low shots.
Morningstar.
Yes, but, you know, Rader seems to be getting that tough collar tie.
Yeah, he doesn't mind being in there.
He likes to battle.
Here's a half shot there by Morningstar into a new wrestling position here.
Now with the over and under almost 2 minutes gone in the first period, the score still zero zero.
There's very subtle change there where Morningstar was able to stop Raiders head down.
Now he's got a scoring opportunity potentially moves into a front headlock, hand fighting, both guys having a difficult time getting to the corner and in really having attempted that at this point, just trying to lower their level.
Here's an attempt by Reeder.
It bounced him pretty good.
Yeah, good.
Here's a situation where Reeder does have the advantage inside collar, tie in the wrist and feel comfortable with it.
So get tired.
If Morningstar seems to be getting caught up in the positions that he isn't in, I don't believe.
I think he bobs around.
We drive a little more.
I think probably why he's having a difficult time, you know, doing any penetrating right now, readers really hanging on his head.
I mean, he's really making Morningstar work and Reeder likes being in this position ear to ear.
He really makes his opponents work.
That's the end of the first period.
There was no score.
Zero zero.
You're just joining us.
The score is Iowa 11, Iowa State, eight after five matches.
This is the sixth match, £165.
Ryan Morningstar looking at him right there.
He's coming on top of John Reeder, the returning all-American sophomore for Iowa State, Scores zero zero right now as we enter the second period that's coming in.
Iowa State wrestler just coming up with that heavyweight stand up again and Morningstar fairly easily to stop that by, just drop it in the leg and sweep in it, roll through the situation Good Hip action by Reeder.
Yeah, this is pretty tough in here.
Morningstar has obviously got a pretty good grip on that leg.
He's got his hips in.
It looks like repeat of Clark and yeah, all the singlets have changed up and forth and we had it back in there.
That hundred £25 match.
The official really took a long time to call a stalemate.
He's doing the same thing.
Well, yeah, not quite as long a little shorter now he's warmed up.
Well, that work to Morningstar's advantage.
39 seconds of riding, maybe build up, maybe depending on how much strength it took out of their head to pull it up.
You're all in on this day.
In that caution on top, Ryan Morningstar jumped the gun free hold.
No movement again.
Now he's dangerous here.
Reeder is dangerous.
Yeah, he's got the leg in good morning Star does is getting a little bit high I think readers doing exactly what you're talking about here coming out the back door.
Green Wow that was pretty pretty good.
By Morningstar to keep from getting reversed there.
Potentially dangerous.
They're going to put Ryan Morningstar back on top.
No points.
No way.
I think Morningstar learned a lesson there.
We'll see if he does it again, though, maybe not put his leg in.
And he just didn't realize how dangerous this guy was.
Reeder Reeder was is really smooth with some legs on top and on the bottom.
Well, that's why he just comes up with his but just brings his butt up the advice that leg to come in Dan because he wants to get that reversal monster all through here right now you're going to see now it's game on.
Here is the guy who keeps his head up in his scramble position.
He will end up winning it.
And I think has got that like cross tight.
So we're just burning clock here, right?
He's going to break it up still zero zero.
Morningstar building a minute 22, right time advantage here in the second period Green I look at green he's been cautioned on top so he's got to be a little careful Morningstar jumping that gun yet two cautions.
The third one is a point.
Brian Morningstar from Lisbon, Iowa.
His dad, Scott and four time state champion Ryan, himself a three time state champion Powerade program right up the road here from Iowa City.
Ryan's doing a nice job of just basically hanging on in there in the make it the other way, really out of position, not really solid.
He's just can't do anything, can't really do anything there.
It's hard to call guys stalling when you're if you let go all the guys out.
5 seconds left.
Ryan from Ryan Morningstar riding out John Rader in this second period.
Maybe I'll vote him out, but he's used a lot of energy.
Oh, Oh, exactly what he wants to do, though.
Here's good period for Morningstar.
How do we got here?
2 minutes of riding time, but no movement.
I got remember Reeder pinned 54 guys in high school in a row.
This is his strength and probably a one of Morningstar's.
He does he doesn't have any weaknesses but that's two as two cautions are Morningstar.
He moved his elbow before the whistle was blown That's his second one more movement and that evens up that all that right One day time I'm working a lot closer green red on now that's red.
You balanced him well we don't like this going back and forth because you know, points like this are pretty tough to come by, whether they're two points.
But, you know, it's part of game.
People have lost national titles by jumping the gun and starting a third period.
The score is zero zero on this score with the long way, with the right in time.
So they're going to have to straighten that out.
Big Escape by Morningstar there.
It looks like front one zero is tough as Rieder is in the top position.
He didn't look like really wanted to be there through the course of the match.
So I don't think he wants to take a chance.
He wants to get out there and wrestle a little bit.
That's why the clock run on.
He is making shots that are he's bounced backwards.
He's hitting and bouncing backwards.
Instead of hitting and going forward, he's going to have to get an angle.
They're going to figure out the right time here.
And it should be about two or three more seconds, 4 seconds, maybe 4 seconds more down.
I notice both of these wrestlers actually ran back to the center.
I mean, I know Shawn Rieder did.
So Ryan Morningstar, they both are ready to go, ready to rumble.
And now we're in the third period, a minute 20 left.
The score is one zero in favor of Morningstar.
And he also has riding time in Oh, Zach, what was that about there?
We're basically concerned about Rieder moving forward here with his head button or something.
Yeah, but Morningstar, there's only one way to win this match for him and he's got to get a takedown.
There's only one way for Rieder to win the match.
He's pretty much got to get a takedown to it because you just it's too tight right now to count on anything but your own skills.
Well, if you're Ryan Morningstar, you've got to keep your feet moving.
And particularly that left foot, because that's where readers go on here.
Most of the shots have been to that side of that lead leg.
He's not moving it right now.
He's got to tie up the reacting and that's about it.
I knew that call was coming.
That's a warning.
Starling with 39 seconds, 39 seconds.
It's going to be hard to call it because he's going to get down to 15.
That doesn't mean you can't call it 37.
But there's really it's just Matt position here.
It's just Matt position.
Yeah, he makes a bad shot.
You know, he's in trouble, too, so he's not going to make a shot right here is can wait Rieder to go ahead and bring this is defensive which Rieder can't do really is having a difficult time really penetrating right here he is really is really having a difficult time and it doesn't deserve a star card to say that right now.
Morningstar So Match is getting down towards the end here and read it, really setting up in the end he often he didn't go through that he didn't stop the hands and I'm just like, you know what big win again for Ryan Morningstar and for the home crowd, The record crowd.
Ryan Morningstar wins two zero with riding time put the Hawkeyes up 14 eight after six matches.
This is a weight class that Ryan Morningstar looks like he belongs here.
I tell you, he looks like good size, except he's washed all the way.
I know there are some tight calls here in the second period, maybe given up.
A potential reversal on the pitch actually held up well, but he held up very well right there.
In the end, he was still strong.
He stepped right up.
Yes, but still, look for the well that puts the cyclones behind the eight ball because the next four are definitely their favorites.
The next two are favored for Iowa.
The next the last two are favored for Iowa State.
Right now, Iowa leads by six.
Iowa State's got to change one of those next two matches.
The favorites here.
We start at £174.
Duke Burke, the junior doing so, ranked eight, going up against Jay Baruchel, the junior eight, no rank.
Second, this is the first time I've watched Burke wrestle.
We know anything about it.
Transfer from northern Illinois.
He was ended up in the round of 12 last year.
There was one win away from being an all-American.
These two wrestled last too.
And the Morsell major decision Burke 10 to 1 at the Midlands.
So they've seen each other and Bortles had it his way and he started out that way too pretty easy.
He knew where he was.
He kept the foot in head to toe, right in bounds.
Two points real fast for Jay Baruchel.
Elbow last and hold it.
Okay, here we go.
Red state, green at you.
You know, we've seen very few you know, those faced a shoelace type scrambles that end up taking a minute minute and a half or two these a lot of very clean technique once these wrestlers get in on the legs here, that's good style.
And those finishes only take 2 to 3 seconds.
And that tells you the quality of wrestlers that we have out here today.
Morsell, a junior from Marion, Iowa, Linn Meyer High School, he's also left the state and go to Virginia Tech.
When Tom Brandes was out there, came back all-American last year in his first year in the lineup at 174 for the Hawkeyes classic Lenoir High School coach Doug Streicher, former all-American here for the Hawkeyes, breaking down.
Hold on, Stella, Give me a second here.
Hold on.
All right, let's try this.
Go.
Ready?
Let's go, Let's go.
Burke from Notre Dame High School in Peoria, Illinois, Started.
Started.
Northern Illinois transferred here green to Iowa.
Out to Iowa State that ready Green on course has always been really tough in the top position is nice job at controlling the hips drops back he's got room control in the hips working has been pretty good at that.
I had an opportunity to watch him through his career.
Quinn Marr Marion And what amazed me about him was that he went from £103 to 171, I think four years, four years.
And so he won the state four times.
And you very I've never heard of that from going to 103 and all the way up to in winning that 171 and yeah, being a four time state champ just amazing.
And he looks bigger this year, you know, out there, Hey, we're going to hold it.
Hey, get in there.
I probably could hold up pretty well at 184.
Well, I've actually been around a lot longer than you guys, so I've heard of it before.
But that I think it was Don Jr Buzzard.
I think he wrestled, won 20 now and won four state titles.
Oh, no, no, that's no, that's not the way.
No, no, no, no.
To win four titles.
I've never heard of it.
Going to jump that far.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He, I think he's won 20 out of like 189 his senior year.
His total real Well a little bit.
This is a little bit like what you're talking about earlier, where you come to a point in time where you think you're not going to score them bad points right away.
You going to get some more takedowns go down for me.
But just on cue here, ball goes into the red.
We're going up to options start right hand green.
Think he heard you?
Well, I was thinking that you were talking.
Oh, that was a 2 to 1 in favor of Morsell.
Now he gives birth of escape here at £174.
Big meet between Iowa State and Iowa Carver Hawkeye, setting a world record for college.
Dual meet attendance 15,995.
Never before have this seen and viewed a college wrestling meet up Morsell just smooth out there again.
He had an opportunity to break the grip of grip was broken and quite spin around but there he's in a position yeah missed it Missed it.
Look at this.
Come back.
I don't know how he did that.
You know, he's just got that knack.
He's just smooth, good hits, but he knows when to lower his hips and drive through the back.
And that's what he did.
Looked like he just fell off down.
And there was a chance where a lot of younger wrestlers will throw their rear end out and try to get out of that.
He dropped in drive.
It was hard to see it from this angle.
Here we go.
Say good spin around situation.
Both athletes reacting lively here, but spin around caught him on his heels dropping drive, rolling those hips right.
Hey, elbow left, elbow last and hold take.
Let's go now the beginning of the second period Marshall from Iowa out front four, two, one two takedowns the first period Jay Baruchel had one to show three duper escape for Marshall.
That's it.
That's it.
So first off, the Hawkeye also has a lot of writing time, a minute 40 built up, not a leg again, but kind of a a squashed on that one.
I'll be hard to come out of that one here.
Good.
He puts his head down, but just keeps on moving in when he has the opportunity to score here.
Wasting a lot of time here on both sides.
Actually.
Yeah.
This is a scoring opportunity for both men.
And hey, see how much action there to come back up to the feet level there by Iowa State's Burke spin around came back in on the leg again Morsell just never gets flustered out there he just needs keeps the same expression almost the same expect the same pace all the way through the match, keep improving it.
This is not it's kind of a not a scoring position Mike Haggerty.
The official put them both back up.
Stalemate, real important.
35 seconds for both both teams here.
Let's go.
Once thinking about a major in the other, you've got to be thinking about getting back in the match.
Oh.
Oh, well, at this point in the match, what do you drill your go to shot?
You know, sometimes you have to wait till the end of the match to hit it.
But this is a go to shot situation and what is it?
And oh, and really for both both wrestlers.
Yeah.
For what they're trying to accomplish.
If you're going to if you're going to win this match, you need to score here.
If you're Burke and Burkhead double inside tie there.
It didn't go to anything faux pas and we're at the end of the second period.
It is 5 to 1 in favor of Jay Baruchel.
Got both his takedowns in the first period, got an escape in the second, buried nothing much more.
Now Burke goes down down.
Here we go.
Lock down another Good.
It would have been a different match if Burke would have been able to score there in the last 35 seconds, as Dan puts it you alluded to.
And then to have the bottom position 5 to 1, though, is Bortles lead up.
As we enter the third period, it we're still looking for it's like he's looking for some back points good old fashioned head lever right there which forehead and back of his back of his arm grabbed the wrist.
So head Burke's doing a really good job of keeping his left arm out of position for a chicken wing or armbar whatever.
But he's getting in there.
He's pulling it under so good hands.
Right, guys?
A smothering arrived by Jay Baruchel, who's out in front 5 to 1.
He's got riding time.
It can't be erased.
So he's got a five point lead right now.
Content, it looks like with Ryan Burke out, there's another one of these that he's dominating the match but he's not going to get a major.
And what tactics do you use to get one?
Right now I'd probably need to go for a back point's warning stalling on the Iowa State wrestler, but that's the first warning.
No points 30 seconds left in the match.
The three point nearfall would allow that to happen, but I think Burke knows that you're not going to see this up.
The Court But yeah, he'll take another stalling.
Mark Not much of an effort to get out and hold every option.
Option start, take, hold 5 to 1 in favor of Jay Baruchel who just lets go now.
It's 5 to 2.
Burke Back in on a shot.
Great defense by Baruchel looking to try to put him on his back.
But Duke Burke felt that too, so he hung his leg up by his head too long.
So the guy was able to reach up because he was definitely in position to get the takedown early.
Still nothing but keep that head.
You keep that leg by the guy's head.
That's what these guys at.
Scramble real good.
They're going to keep you from scoring at late.
Has to be with your body.
He leaves his legs behind him a lot in from there to take up most of his glory in.
The first period, two takedowns were achieved by Jay Baruchel.
You're looking at him right there, 14 feet down from Lemar High for the pride of Winmar comes off the all American last year.
Now a winner tonight against Iowa State gets three more points for Iowa the score is the Hawkeyes 17 the Cyclones eight quarter.
Now we head to £184.
Real hitting freshman Jerome Ward for the Cyclones up against junior film.
Kitty Kelley, an all-American ranked third in the nation right now.
Jerome Ward being the freshman, not ranked 84, really a tough weight class.
And you've take a look at Katie's improvement over last year.
He just really came on in the back half of the season.
He just started, you know, getting tougher and just competing and competing.
And, you know, he's in the quarterfinals of the national tournament last year and he's got a lead against national champion.
He was that close to beating the national champion in the quarters and lost it on a takedown with about 20 seconds, actually with about 10 seconds left.
Yeah.
And if you watch that, he actually did hip hop up out of that.
They gave the takedown on the landing and you do that on the edge.
But he went his season went from probably, you know, ended up being a low place all-American event.
His season went from being a not an all-American to being with the NCAA champions and and and to being in the all star meet this year pre season.
I mean, his improvement has been steady and winning.
You know and beating the guy that a beating five old two years ago.
So exactly what you're saying it's heavy heavy over 30 So now has he got an opportunity he's never won in a match in this Iowa State duel.
He had to go against Varner.
Does it Jake Varner, two time NCAA finalist, is up at 197.
We'll see him in the next match.
But Phil, Katie gets a chance to not have to wrestle Jake and go up against the freshman, make his mark here in this historic and always exciting showdown between Iowa State and Iowa.
We're here at Carrboro, Hawkeye Arena.
I'm Tim Johns along with Jim Gibbons and Dan Gable bringing you the showdown between the number one and two ranked teams in America.
Iowa, number one ranked out in front, 17 to 8 over the number two ranked cyclones were at £184.
And this is where it will be a little bit different for Phil Keddie here in this season.
Now he's the top higher rated wrestler and you've got wrestlers that are going out just basically like what Warren is doing here, holding good position, keeping it close, was doing what he had to do his freshman and sophomore year to get competitive.
And now you really have to try to break through a guy's head, hands, defense and wards keeping pretty good position, right?
He's having trouble.
Yeah, Katie is having trouble with ties.
I can see usually he has a little stronger tie than his opponent.
And so far in this match, he's had difficulty with getting control.
Ward was a two time state champion, Illinois, from Evergreen Park at Saint Rita High School.
Redshirt freshman, Throw your shot, throw.
That's it.
Or pretty well schooled here coming inside of a get his tie.
So each time it comes to the inside, he has an opportunity to drive through good action.
Keep it going.
However, as we're getting strong here, when he gets the underhook with that left arm, that's where he really gets confident.
The drive through so good period for Ward was only neutral on the feet into the first period, another zero zero first period here forward the first over green ward defers an Iowa caddie chooses down to start the second period.
You're looking at him Phil can't even hold Reddick out of Vernal, Utah.
Nice job.
Wow.
That speed action there that he comes out for the escape, he goes up one zero.
I like this game.
I like to see that, Tim, When you get a guy that just blows up out there, it's right up to his feet.
He's up to his feet.
By the time he gets to the the middle part of that black circle drives all the way through.
And that's it's tough to stop.
It's really large, really keeping the head position on it.
Yeah.
Which don't think that used to just came right up to his feet kicks out he's moving right or keeping his head right in there and he's not moving his head out of the way.
Well, if you notice, Dan, he's just coming inside a caddy's tie every right now.
He's got the guy, He's on the outside on the tie.
So he needs if he needs to get to the inside, that would help a little bit.
But get he reaches see see how it comes underneath.
But it's one thing to be able to keep Katie from getting into.
It's another thing for getting in to caddie.
So he's got to do a whole lot more because I think he can hold his own against this style any time of the day.
No doubt.
It's just so tough.
It's except Ward does have a good double leg, which he shot one time earlier, which, you know, you know, you're not ready.
He could catch you off guard there.
So there hasn't really been a lot of moves except for just a lot of flow.
Nice.
The first move in the match, single leg.
Wow.
Nice battle.
What a move by ward.
But it's the first time that Kenny was able to get on the inside.
Well, once he got on the inside, he got to his shot.
Well, he showed what he could do there.
Yeah, I think both wrestlers showed what they could do there has a good flurry, 0010 on the escape by Kenny Ward will have his chance.
Warning for stalling on Iowa State's ward.
I think it's mostly the head baron, and he's just a little bit of inactivity as compared to Kat.
He's doing a little more moving with the head like that was like Jerome Ward, just a tough guy to get off of his feet.
Then in the second period, one zero in favor of Philip Kenny, the Hawkeye over now Jerome Ward for the Cyclones.
But Ward goes down for the first time set red green in the mix to have a sense that he might have a little bit of explosive himself.
We'll certainly find out here what came out like Gettys.
Well, he came up with his butt a little bit and all Iowa State wrestlers have been doing that.
They come up with their rear end first and then now they're in a situation where your hand fighting here really conceded the hits one point escape.
Petty gives it up when he sees that he was in danger of actually being reversed.
The switch switch.
And here's where that 15,995 9955 head up really having an impact three three.
This match has gone quick.
Really has.
I can't remember much of it Why he can't fight off his own move shot a low double whipped into his butt and he kind of lost track of where he's at and he kind of give it to me if he to kick it out like he scrambled for it.
But he just kind of he looks down.
Yeah, he looks stunned.
And it's because Petty stopped him in his tracks is a great turn to offense by Kenny.
Well, that's it.
That's strategy wise.
You sit there, you get that for stalling, calling the guy your marksman back, you know, he's got to come, you know, got to come with his best shot, especially when he got a warning.
Yeah, you get that warning and and be aware of that.
You got an opportunity for some short offense won or takes the shot.
It's those comes down to a takedown for ward to win it for Iowa State.
Does he know where he's at Kenny does he's 3 to 2.
Well if he's thinking I'm not sure.
You know, he's got to be thinking scoring again and stay in good position same time.
But double shot he's got an opportunity Got it Got in there and stop it.
This is a scoring position for Kenny Locks up the Cradle potentially, but 15, where does that drift?
Oh, I don't know.
But you damn good.
Ward showed me some athletic ability out here.
He's been three.
He's presented himself, spent most of that match in the center since Kenny was Kenny.
He wins 3 to 2 and he gets his first win.
As you talked about him in this big series.
Yeah, maybe not the way he would have liked it, but he goes for it all the time.
He's got a lot of guts.
It's able to stop him here to spin right around behind him and get the two.
And that was the difference in the match.
Yes, Hawks, that makes the score Iowa, Tony lake tonight, Iowa State eight.
We'll be back with more college wrestling in just a moment.
But we have a long night outside.
No Holden hotline Thursday.
If you were a loved one with like a birthday display and by a friend where wrestling.
We're back at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
The score is Iowa 20, Iowa State eight.
We have two matches left.
And here's where we stand.
Two pins, Iowa State's favored these two matches.
Two pins in the meet would be tied.
But Dan, you mentioned it.
You got to get one thing first.
This is a guy that can do it.
Jake Barner for Iowa State are 200 and he'll be wrestling a stand in for their regular Chad Baty.
Luke Lofthouse for Iowa.
And Jake Varner is the type of guy that's really good.
The top position matter if he gets out early and gets that escape, he knows kind of like we saw with the Caddy match to take down to four Varner gets good power.
Half Nelson and Caleb Lofthouse is coming up.
Broner junior from Bakersfield, California Bakersfield High School.
As a freshman and a sophomore.
He's been second in the NCAA as a finalist the last two years at 184, just moving up to 197 this year.
In last year, Tim, of the national finals, he's probably about 6 seconds of riding time away from being the champion.
Here's the replay on it here.
Lofthouse Coming up.
I like that.
I like those double overlooks.
I didn't see that overlooked and I didn't it that way lifted the regulation.
He did that pretty easy.
Yeah, he did.
He first move over there pretty easy autograph poster of the 2000 and nineteenths when he speaks to Mark Lofthouse, a sophomore from Avon, Utah, at Mountain Crest High School in the middle elbow last you going on a mission for a couple of years.
And he saw that sort of last year.
And really this is his first time in the big show.
That thing went on for a long time.
Actually.
He was here as a freshman and Russell won 74 and had a lot of matches there.
But been a while.
Two zero, The takedown, early takedown for Jake Garner over Luke Lofthouse.
The score is Iowa 20 Iowa State eight, but you get six points for a fall.
And if Iowa State can get two falls, it'll be 2220.
And that's the way it stands these days.
There's no criteria regular dual meet action.
It's a if it's a tie, it's a tie.
He's he's really controlling the wrist and ankle and all the hits and what he wants to get coaches he usually likes to get up a high on that head to get a good half Nelson with that and really works the head this time he's going with the elbow and maybe looking for a far side cradle He's got that no not quite trying to get the point of the shoulder down the left shoulder of Lofthouse down and gets that left shoulder down and he's got a chance to turn him.
So he's really working that hard.
That's he really put in with Jake Varner on top here, really good hometown show against Hudson Taylor from Maryland in the all star meet turn turning him tilting him and winning by double digits And it just looked like the Jake Varner that we thought we were going to see a couple of years ago.
But it seemed like he kind of shut it down and made everything close the last couple of years.
But he certainly has it in his arsenal to go open it up and score a lot of points.
LOFTHOUSE Do an okay job of hand fighting down there, so pick it up corners very tough in this position.
He's got that shoulder pulled down again and he's he's slipping out of it there with his left arm as he Varner has gone to maybe about ten or 12 times now.
See, I can pull that off there.
That's going to he's going to lose that technique.
Varner is going to lose the technique here because of the hand fighting there by Lofthouse.
And it's only going to be two zero lots of riding time.
The takedown happened when inside the first 15 seconds for Jake Varner, he rides Lofthouse out and it's two zero after the first period.
Talk to me.
Lofthouse will get the choice.
He defers.
Jake Varner I'll take down, Down.
They locked down for me tight, red.
No, I really difficult to pin it elbow last and hold it here scholarship college wrestler you know when when he knows it does what he's got to do for his team to stay off his back.
Get it on there.
Come on, love.
That's ready.
Get in.
Try it again.
Get tight.
Escape for Jay Garner Drops for tie.
Kyle three zero for Varner over Lofthouse 28 for Iowa over Iowa State after eight matches.
Really nice takedown, just nice ankle pick from two more for Jake Varner makes the score five zero again here's the battle again he's got that elbow tied in and Lofthouse is going to probably peel this off again the right arm there trying to peel that grip off.
Check it out, the headset off.
Take a look at what we know what Lofthouse is doing there.
He's pulling it off of that.
Varner probably needs to be a little more active with his legs and get great, you know, bounce him up and down, get him moving.
Got it right.
Would you like to show?
I don't think there's any doubt in Jake Vernon's mind that he can control this match.
Right now, there's nothing less than a fall or disqualification that will help your team win this dual me escape one for LOFTHOUSE.
Score 5 to 1.
No stalling warning so far.
There it is.
There's your first or that was the second one.
So stalling warning came earlier 1.4.
Jake Varner makes the score 6 to 1.
Varner doesn't look like he moved up away.
Weight looks actually the bigger the two here he's very nice in that weight class there.
But and I think this is a better weight class for him too because he tends to wrestle a little bit high and he doesn't, you know, bend his legs very much.
He kind of walks right in here.
And I think that it'll be easier for him to get in on shots in those 97 pounders as opposed to £84.
Always been a tough wrestling in top.
That's way and the slow way end in the second period.
The score 6 to 1.
One of those points is a stalling point against Lofthouse going for Jake Varner ready?
Yeah, I don't understand that call either.
I would have went down.
Lofthouse chooses up and neutral but he did a pretty good job the last 30 seconds, and maybe that's what he's thinking.
But Varner is a little bit limited on his motion.
His point.
Yeah.
But again, scramble situation here, double over hooks.
Varner stays.
Stacy, That is in the mat.
So you got to stay tough on the edge.
Two more points for Varner.
8 to 1.
Not much time for Jake Varner to try to win here, somehow get six points for his team if he can disqualify or pin him.
But he's three stalling calls away from disqualifying.
And so it's it's not going to happen in the last minute.
Two more takedowns somehow he's going to have to take Lofthouse down to his back and pin him for Iowa State to get those six points.
Well, I think the Iowa coaching staff would like to see probably their wrestler just go in there and maybe, you know, challenge him a little bit here with a with a shot in any way.
He needs to go in there.
But he's backing off in that on that Whizzer situation.
Yeah, Edge of the mat.
Two more points the scores 12 3a9 point lead with riding time quite a lot for see here getting some instruction from the corner here Tom Brandes is on a roll of blood time out there so well coach is going to get some instruction give some instruction here for wrestling fans with 35 seconds left in the third period here at £197, I've got one more match to go.
Heavyweight.
Iowa's out in front 22 eight.
Iowa State's Jake Varner is on his way to winning this match.
But whether it would be by lock down three for you, wrestling ten or more is yet to be determined.
But not much time left.
Go do it.
Oh, okay.
These two teams could easily meet again here later on in the year at the National Duals, which are being hosted by University Northern Iowa, ranked number one.
And to build it, let's go back on it.
Joe Red.
I don't see anything that has changed that.
No tip.
These are two elite programs right now.
Yeah, that's a big win for Jake Varner.
He takes on writing time.
The score is 13 to 3, just a ten point win, which is four points for the team.
Now it's 20 to 12 in favor of Iowa, with one match left, a few people leaving.
But this this really could came down to two heavyweights.
And now those heavyweights are pretty good wrestlers.
Iowa State I mean, yeah, you take that £141 match and turn it around and be 17 to 15 going into a heavyweight match.
And so it was down to seconds that made the difference.
Well, that's what I as a fan of wrestling, that's what I like seeing, is that, you know, both these teams are very competitive.
And, you know, you talk about being in a tournament, then, you know, you don't really know who has his hands up, nice single leg attempt there at the edge of the mat.
Zabriskie doing a nice job of fading back into his own shot.
We've got Dan Erickson, the heavyweight for Iowa versus Zabriskie from Iowa State Zabriskie, one of the top three guys, the heavyweight wrestlers in every poll.
Dan Erickson up from 197.
This is the first time in heavyweight this year, undefeated on the year seven.
And no, he actually worked on it last year in the offs, you know, during the redshirt year.
Put on some pretty good weight.
I didn't see what he weighed in it today but I think he's pushing to 40 junior from Eagle, Idaho Eagle High school Zabriskie from New Jersey Branch ville New Jersey High high School Zabriskie, a junior.
Richard Junior.
Erickson also a junior driver, was shot by Frisky, but basically coming through Erickson's underhook And under the Underhook, Erickson's forcing right down the right hand side is the first guy, probably more so than a lot of heavyweights.
Once he gets into a tie, he likes to circle the circle he comes down and then he just blows right through.
Guy has had some good, powerful, powerful shots of he problems early in his career.
He's going up against quite a few guys that were, you know, really heavy but known for keeping a high pace in the match.
And this looks a little bit slow paced for what he's used to.
He's risky already has a really good win this year against he's from Wisconsin ranked number two and two.
Good look at the heavyweights here.
They look a lot alike.
And Erickson really built himself up into a viable heavyweight here.
Doesn't look light at all.
Does he have a big set of legs?
It's actually not been in his hips enough.
These are his knees a little bit high.
The risk is kind of a, you know, not a real tall heavyweight.
So he looks like he's in pretty good position to score just about at any time.
Decent shot by Erickson, but a lot of weight there.
Low a lot of low here.
So is just we were talking about here circling off the tie and drop it in on a shot.
Both teams here would like to pick up this last win, walk away, feel a little better.
Whether he lost the meet or won the meet.
David Zabriskie, as we said, ranked number two heavyweight.
Every win's important for him as he positions himself to make a run at the NCAA championship.
A couple other heavyweights, Rochelle from Oklahoma State, Nancy from Wisconsin.
That's right.
Now, Dan Erickson is going toe to toe with David Zabriskie, the favorite here for Iowa State zero zero after the first period down red Zabriskie from Iowa State Cruises down, Erickson will go on top.
You're looking at Dan Erickson right there in the middle elbow left.
And hold it.
Here we go.
Red found green on right back up on his feet.
Here's Zabriskie and Erickson doing a pretty good job of following them here.
But you said it.
He's following.
So he's kind of reacting to Zabriskie.
So I don't know how long that can happen.
He's got to actually take over the action on the top position if he wants to really control and keep him from getting to his feet.
But I think there's the bloody nose right there on his tail.
You're right.
Dan, you were talking about this is important for Iowa State, for Zabriskie right here to just from a mental standpoint, because Iowa has really wrestled well in many, many matches here.
And so they don't want to have their favored wrestler walk away getting beat here.
Well, you take a look at favorite wrestlers.
The green at Gallic was ranked higher than search.
This guy is ranked number one.
Yeah, right.
One got Rieder obviously ranked higher than Star.
So you know adding three.
That total would not be a psychological advantage for Iowa State.
John Paul is doing a good job with it.
Yeah, he just keep it as it is, right?
Boy, the crowd likes that great ride by.
Dan Hanson, He has a good sense of his own weight on top of Zabriskie.
Well, I really believe in that in the top position.
Don't give up any uncontested escapes like that.
Really understand that, Paul.
I don't think you can be out of bounds until you're both out of bounds.
Isn't that right?
That's correct.
But you know what?
He could have called a potentially dangerous Made it look a little better.
The crowd didn't like it, of course.
Dan Erickson, in answering the question, how many how good is it?
Because he's kind of the unknown and he is answering the question right now as he not just rides and follows, but he is putting a lot of pressure on Zabriskie.
He's got that wing tight.
He's got to get back in.
They've got to get it back yet.
He doesn't have a good right there.
He'll lose it.
I don't know.
I won't lose it if you don't have the heads on the mat though.
Well, he's got with the shoulder is he's got the wrong weight on the wrong side but he's good enough to ride.
And that's probably important as anything right now.
And he's wearing Zabriskie down.
Yeah.
If he gets his hit, if he gets his hips down he can, he could turning out rougher.
He's got to be okay with that.
He's got to be fine with that.
But again, milking the clock here, 33 seconds, it's a risk of coming up.
Hard pops his hips out and goes, Yeah, but see, he didn't fight after he got to his feet.
I mean, he fought all match.
24 seconds left in the second period.
One escape for Dave David Zabriskie and puts him up ahead one to nothing.
The match has been dominated here in the last minute 40 by Erickson until that escape.
What a top position question is what did that take out of Zabriskie.
Well you know it looks like he's working pretty hard to it.
Look at his ankle right there.
It's pretty close.
Good call, Daniel, with 3 seconds left.
And you saw it.
So did David Zabriskie.
He gets what could be a match.
I'm saying it the first time I really saw his stats, you know.
I do.
I Yes, And I. I saw it in the first period, but I.
You could react to the first period better.
Three zero.
Now, what was zero zero with Erikson riding Zabriskie and almost turning him except they went out of bounds is now three zero in front in favor of David Zabriskie over Erickson and he's not going the right time down to minute 15 writing time advantage for Erickson from that second period comes up and fighting got an opportunity to score and he keeps the writing time a minute seven 7 seconds is better than two.
I mean, he keeps his right foot out there.
He's the best.
He's going to be able to get it again or his left foot.
Zabriskie straight later.
Zabriskie is not the type of.
Russell Just try to hold on to a lead here, a takedown with when and if he's fit to hold Zabriskie down because of riding time in favor of Dan Erikson.
Zabriskie Out front minute ten left Iowa State wrestlers right.
Just kind of waiting to walk away with the win and salvage there's that ankle are cyclo psyche hey get that shot I just the energy levels this was I could tell that you you know you felt like you take a ride on the bottom guy.
I think it took a lot out of the top guy.
Yeah.
Good point.
Where it looked like it just wasn't moving like he was in the first period.
Made a couple of good shots there, but just the last shot wasn't so good.
David Zabriskie stuffed in right around him.
5 to 1.
The score right in time.
No longer for Dan Erikson, 25 seconds left.
And Zabriskie looks like he's in charge.
Head outside shot when you're when you're tired is is dangerous.
Bring it up down there.
Come on.
So you just got to suck it up.
You just got to suck it up a little bit.
He's calling on Dan Erikson.
Here's the first few seconds left.
Cyclones are going to get a win, but Iowa had one, two, three, four, five, six, six wins tonight.
The Hawkeyes hit Iowa State had four wins.
Iowa State will go back and they will, as Jim, you said, they will see some places where they could have had those wins.
Well, any time you lose a meet by less than six points, you're sitting there going, okay, how could I how can we turn this around?
And it's always one match, always one match.
And you saw two matches there that were going to go in either way, 41 and 65 in response to the toss up matches.
But Iowa came out here and got the best of those matches and comes out with the victory.
Well, once again, the final score is Iowa, the number one ranked Hawkeyes 20, and the number two ranked Iowa State cyclones 15.
Thanks for watching.
Now for Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons, I'm Tim Johnson saying goodbye from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
