Good evening, everybody.
I'm Doug Brown with Tim Johnson.
And this is our final match of the 1987 college wrestling series.
And it's a big one before a packed house in Iowa City.
And we're going to be giving you an address later on the telecast and I'll give you an opportunity to write in with your suggestions, your criticisms or your comments on our telecast.
And we want to welcome you tonight watching on K o d in Bunker Hill Kansas or w l v t in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
It's Iowa against Iowa State, two of the top four teams.
But we can throw out the ratings tonight.
You bet we can.
And we've been talking about it all year.
Those top four.
The champion isn't going to be determined until a month from tonight in College Park, Maryland.
But there has been an interesting trend this year.
And those top four teams have really had it their ways at home, winning the means at their home crowd.
Tonight, we're in Harvard.
Hawkeye, and this is where the Hawkeyes have never lost.
39 straight under Dan Gable But we're not saying that Iowa is the favorite here, are we?
Are we?
No, sorry.
All we're saying is that the home crowd makes a difference.
And in fact, Iowa will need that tonight as Iowa State is favored in more matches tonight than Iowa is.
But the home crowd could make it a match almost impossible to predict.
And, you know, the last time we saw Iowa State beat Iowa.
23 to 12 up in Ames.
Well, up there, you saw all this power in the middle and upper wait The premier teams in college wrestling here in Carver, Hawkeye Arena.
What do you think is going to happen in the early wait?
Well, that's the key.
The early waits Whoever starts hot, it's a good thinking that it'll end hot that way.
But extra points somewhere may make the difference.
It's a big one.
It's Iowa and Iowa State.
A lot of run from Carver, Hawkeye Arena.
We're back at Hawkeye Carver Arena in Iowa City, Iowa, for the rematch between the Iowa State Cyclones and the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Those are the season's records and how the teams stand in their long series and what happened last time.
Iowa State won a 23 to 12 There's a full house here tonight.
I can see only a couple of empty rows up in the.
Back of the South stands tonight in Carver, Hawkeye Arena.
It's amazing that all this just draw because there are district wrestling tournaments around tonight.
There are a lot of people out here to see these two teams go the Match-Ups tonight and show us loaded with all Americans on top ranked wrestler.
But those in the first place are so important someone against Mark McKay.
At one 46 it's Kelly and Regan they had a draw the last time.
Here once again Cameron wasn't in there the first time but it makes a difference maybe one 42.
The two men weighed in.
But we would be surprised if we saw anybody but Carr and Kelly Randall still has the hamstring for Iowa.
Guess he's still a bad ankle for Iowa State at one 50, the top.
Two in the country, Reagor and Heffernan.
01 58.
Carter and John have won 67 the top two again three.
Matt Jackson and Alger.
At one 77.
It's Chip O'Reilly who has lost only once this year against Steve Metzger of Iowa State.
And on one night it's all here against K and heavyweight this is a different matchup to as much notoriety.
Andy Pope is still in there for Iowa State but sibling earth is him in.
His sixth match now for the Iowa Hawkeyes world heavyweight.
So if it comes down to that last match and it has so many times in this series, it'll be a different pairing than it was the first time around.
Tim Johnson.
I'm so pumped right now.
I'm just real excited.
This crowd's really got everybody going home.
Crowd is something else and I absolutely have no idea what the outcome is going to be.
This is Bill Rotes.
I think we went through the whole first meet mispronouncing Bill's name.
And if you're watching us in northeast Iowa, you knew we were wrong the whole time.
We have been forgot to put an S on Bill's name as pronounce it rotes.
And he's the official.
He saw him the first time around and he's again the official between Iowa and Iowa State.
You're at Carver, Hawkeye Arena.
We welcome you tonight all across the state of Iowa, this great crowd of wrestling fans watching the two best teams in this state, maybe the two best teams in the country.
And they welcome you on k o TV in Bunker Hill, Kansas.
And if you're in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, close to Penn State, you may argue that top two w LG TV in Bethlehem, but you can't argue with the situation here.
It is such a thrilling sight to see this full crowd, full house and an excited crowd because of the first matches meaning so much.
Right, right away.
Hurry.
Some up went in looking for that attack.
And I think that's so important.
He has got to be on the attack here in the home crowd because Martin's were.
Able to really get pumped up and go and they went out of bounds you know the first period is 3 minutes long and each period after that is two.
Minutes long in college wrestling £118 Iowa State is in the red the lighter uniform if you're watching in black and white the Hawkeyes with that ex on the side which is the Roman numeral.
Ten trying for ten national championships this year are in the black Well as we talked earlier Perry some at the last two matches has really made a big move the last two times they've met.
Iowa four victories here.
But tonight with this home crowd Steve Martin has had a month more experience.
And that's a lot of time, Doug, when you're a freshman in the lineup and he's wrestled a lot of the top ranked people, he's probably really come a long way, not only in his math skill, but in his confidence.
And as again, we have some are taking the shot, but it's come an awful long ways out.
And he's down rather flat Martin countering across the back.
And so Bill Rhodes calls it a stalemate.
That's three shots that.
The summit has taken.
Well, some it's a big meet wrestling, but I don't know whether it's in the home crowd or whether it's home and away, because the last few minutes he has scored those big victories, have been in front of the big crowd at for goal.
In the last time we saw within the last year when they beat Oklahoma State, they really stunned them here at Carver Hawkeye at that time number one ranked cowboys.
And I think after the results come in, tomorrow night's still don't go down well.
I think the number one team is going to be whatever who wins this one very.
Well could very well be Martin has to get an attack on he has to attack and get as an initiation going himself in here.
You don't see him attacking the legs much.
Some it ties up the one arm.
We like to work something off it.
He's not in a position where he can right now.
They trade rather a half hearted shots at the upper leg.
And nothing is happening here with about a minute and a half gone in a minute and a half.
Left in the first period.
Well, Smith made all the attacks.
He just needs to finish a Martin to stop those attacks.
And if he could stop spinning around and score, that would be to his advantage.
But he has not.
Been able to do that either.
A warning against Mark, that's the first time we've had any call that could affect the scoring.
Martin was warned here a shot by Martin that so much legs right on the edge.
But they were both out very quickly.
Back to the center I know the Iowa.
Coaching staff would like to get Mark on the head or act.
They want to be aggressive against Iowa State.
But if the headgear don't work, there's a good shot by someone.
He's in deep this time good countered good sprawl by by Martin well Martin stopping the attack once someone gets in on the leg, he's stopping his motion he's using the hips to force him down.
And Sam has not been able to follow through.
With his shot.
He got in deep that time and it was more actually no more difficult from the looks of it for Martin to get out.
And it wasn't the first three.
So there's still no scar middle back, but you still.
Don't see Martin attacking the legs.
And that's what he has to do to score again.
Two on one tie up by Summit.
Yeah, he's a junior from Bloomington, Indiana.
His biggest win this year, I would.
Say, no doubt, because against Martin at Iowa State.
Well, this first period seen six shots by some at versus one at the edge of the mat by Martin.
No score yet.
We're down in the last 10 seconds.
You see the clock ticking.
And, you know, this is where a lot of the action happened last meet right at the end of the periods.
Although it did take us in the second period before the big moves took place.
In the third period.
Yes.
It was in the second period when a major move was made by step, by summit on the near fall.
Throw a five point drop.
It's a little different margin.
It was last time because at the end of the first period last time, it was four to four.
The difference is sustained.
They're tied, but there hasn't been as much action as far as scoring.
Now, who had the choice get them all.
Get all the fingers some.
It starts on the.
Bottom well, Martin, once the loading up and try those killed scores.
But here's some looking for the pin right there.
He's looking to stabilize himself.
Martin got a little high.
Oh, I'll tell you.
It was almost a tough situation there for Mr. Martin.
Front headlock by summit, but he can't make the spin around as we go about 25 seconds into the second period, one to nothing in favor of some.
501 do nothing summit Martin of Iowa in the black uniform this is Iowa and Iowa State.
Just joining.
All you've missed is one escape.
Let's see what's happening here.
Martin is trying to create that over and under.
Then snap down and go around.
He's not going to attack the legs.
You've seen both go over and under.
While that's where Summit likes to be to, this will be very interesting.
Once you get something out of position so he can snap and go, here's the shot.
Now he's got to finish it.
He's staying on his knees too long, giving Martin the chance to.
Put the hips in and create the better position summit is thrown by Martin, but it's not going to work.
It's true for some.
It has a nice job.
By some, it stayed with the player.
He stayed with him high on the leg, pressured in and was able to secure the two points.
Now, for the first time, we're seeing right writing time we go back to the center with 45 seconds to go.
There's Jim Gibbons, the Iowa State coach of his wrestler.
Summitt leads by three.
Let's go.
Right here.
The secret here is he stayed with him tight to let him loosen up.
And now he just turned back in for the two points right there.
Well, we don't want to get Terry Summitt, who has had, as we said, a history of doing well in big matches.
Even though his record is six and five this year, he leads three to nothing in the second period over.
Mark.
You notice he controlled the wrist right there.
He's got a spiral, right.
Trying to keep the hips down, you know.
That, trying to load him up for a tip by.
Knocking out some.
It's a legacy likes to put the legs in.
But he's a little bit too high.
He's a little bit too high.
And the fans begin to sense that maybe Martin can come out the back door here shrugging off the top and that's a reversal Seminole Martin is on top.
And you know what I mean?
About right at the last of the period, a lot of things happen and we're right at the end of the second period.
A big move by Steve Martin from Ohio.
Well, last year, the big move came about that same time, but that was where some or last minute.
That's where Summit.
Threw his five points at the end of the second period.
Now, we'll find out what happens in the last period.
Here's where the pressure is on.
A lot of tension.
That's an Iowa State summit decides to let Martin go and let it be a tie, a 33.
There is no riding time.
Summit feels confident on his feet Surprise you a.
Little bit, Tim?
No, I think this is where Summit knows that he's not going to get hurt.
Or at least.
That's the way he feels.
It makes.
No, it's not so much that he is dominated on the feet, but Martin hasn't shown that he's.
Dangerous there yet.
And it's three, three.
Three, three, get all his all important opening matches.
We have.
Regan against Kelly.
Next.
You also got to remember that Martin has a stalling warning against him in Summit, wants to pressure him to try to get that call.
You can see Martin trying to get a front.
Headlock if he.
Can stop.
But no summit has been able to stay underneath.
Let's go a minute and 10 seconds to go to the coaching staff were up exhorting their.
Wrestlers to go here.
We're just starting in Iowa.
Carver Hawkeye with the cyclones against the Hawkeyes.
He got Martin in the black, somehow in the red and it's high.
And there's a point guard oh, heavily.
Now, Martin has to take me back, right?
He has to take his man down because he's behind.
Well, this will be interesting here because Martin now has to attack.
He's got to create some offense.
And we haven't really seen it yet.
Sometimes when that situation happens, that was a slip by a real threat by some it.
But Martin was not able to take advantage of it.
And they come out even they're getting a little tired now we have 35 seconds to go for 23 in favor of summit well some it's in a position here where he can even take a starling and here is almost to take down some it has to get his leg out and he has to control one top rope says no picked out yet and he says now.
It's a stalemate.
That's good we have 13 seconds to go it's necessary but Martin to take down the win but if Martin does take down he absolutely wins by one and there is something he puts on his back well that's a familiar look.
We're holding up the arm he gets the takedown.
No nearFall, because it is too late.
But it's six to three in favor of Iowa State.
And again, Harris Summit wins a big one.
Sam, it's been the story for the last 3 minutes now as far as starting it up, the cyclones you know, Martin just really never got going there.
No, he never did.
And it kind of surprised me.
Well, that's a good sentiment.
You know, it's hard to beat somebody, a good wrestler three times in a row.
You've really got to give every someone a lot of credit there.
Now we go to one 26.
The last time it was a draw.
John Regan of Iowa against Mitch Kelly against Bill Kelly at Iowa State.
And you know that region as a shooter, just as you did there, Kelly tends to be defensive but very, very good in his defensive ways.
Right.
We have opposite styles here and we've talked about this before.
We have a person in Oregon who keeps the pressure on, who shoots.
He eventually wears his man down.
Kelly is a master at defense master counters, and he really uses his counters They lock up again.
Kelly likes to get a.
Two on one if he can, to see him tie that arm and drop off of that or.
Else causes man to make a bad move out that combination game.
But when Kelly.
Does well, Iowa State does well.
And, you know, this is Coach Givens says he's.
A catalyst of the team.
If he can get him going, it seems like his team really gets up and goes, oh, this is what you mean for both teams.
And as Jim Gibbons points out, it's a key for the cyclones Jill Kelley in the red against an.
Outstanding young one £26 from Cedar Rapids also.
John Regan last time he was 55 and at the.
Time it looked like it might turn that beat around because Kelly was heavily favored.
Now Kelly has a front headlock and he likes to work off this well.
Regan does what.
It takes on the front headlock.
In a funny headlock situation.
You want to get up on your knees and on your feet.
Bring it.
Did Kelly's complaining about a hand, giving him a little bit of trouble here it black now standard.
They've taken about a minute and a half.
We're halfway through the first period again.
Kelly is in a position he likes, and.
You notice that he's slowed the match down here.
A little bit, and he's kept it close inside where Regan usually shoots from out.
Now, again, here's I'm pointing out what Regan's doing is good defense.
Guys.
Did a good job of getting to his feet.
No points.
You know, Kelly takes that arm or controls the head and he's been able to keep Regan away from him so far.
That's right.
He's he's mixing it up.
He's creating some action here.
And Regan's not getting his shots that he's almost patented this year.
But on the other hand, Kelly has not been able to make any offensive moves either.
And so we're 2 minutes into the match.
No scoring double left, right through by Kelly to turn up in Iowa State, something you don't see a lot.
Of and something.
That Gibbons and coaching staff will probably ecstatic about right now that the offense.
Shown by Kelly.
Right there is so out of character.
It was a nice double leg low.
It's a matter of fact.
There were some big.
Smiles on the Iowa State bench when they saw Kelly.
Go right through to Regan's knees.
Well, you could see it coming.
They had really slowed Regan down right here.
He snaps, get him out of.
Position, opens him up in double legs, controls the hips for two nice set up and follow through.
He really caught Reagan off guard.
Not a real drive.
Oh, well, Kelly on top controls the leg in this position while he tries to ride, he's going to have to move up, though, or be called off air.
He is coming out now.
He likes to be here with the legs on and he's a good Laker with the power half arms.
He's putting a lot of pressure on Reagan.
He's putting hip pressure.
He's putting pressure with that half try.
Stalemate, that.
Stalemate that takes a lot out of you when you're on the bottom.
That referee, Bill Roach, says that's enough and he brings them back up.
We have only 9 seconds to go.
This is important.
Can Regan get 9 seconds?
That makes a lot of difference in the way matches go.
That's a point right at the end.
Kelly's going back to the leg right away.
He'll stay there as long as he can.
And the period ends without a reply from Regan choice.
Well, if we're talking about how things.
Start Iowa looks like an Iowa state looks up tempo right now.
Iowa has got to turn that around.
The crowd is not.
That must be all about so far.
And John Regan decides to stay up on the feet.
He'd rather go on the field against Kelly that was what the bench told him to do.
Oh, try to get to Kelly on the beat.
If you can start taking him down, you beat him.
They say Reagan trails two to nothing.
Kelly had a beautiful double leg takedown whoa.
He'll pick.
And two points for Kelly it's.
He's turned into an.
Offensive machine here.
That's two.
Nice real takedown.
Real good takedown.
No, Maher stalemate again.
He got Reagan.
Out of position.
Created a situation where he could reach down and kick the ankle in.
Basically, full Reagan up for the two.
We're in the second period of 126 Terry summit beat Steve Martin at 118 six to three.
And here is Kelly on top with both legs in trying to drive against John Regan knock down as I'm flat now.
Boy he's got a lot of pressure on him but he's got to start turning him He's got to start working towards the back right here he's done the job of dominating now he's got to get out and try to turn him.
Kelly moved to the side as soon as the referees began to count on him there, but you can't find him if he's lateral.
Here's an attempt by Regan to roll and Kelly stopped it.
Right now, Kelly is in a situation where he's been doing everything right.
He's really taken the match away and taken the position away from John Regan and not even give him a chance.
Here's a tight and if he gets out and works to the side, he's going to stay.
Away from any stalling ball.
Also, it's four to nothing.
In favor of Kelly.
He's trying to bar an arm on the near side.
You see that man you're worried about?
Here's a warning against Kelly on top of Stop and Road said you have to use it here.
Just put the pressure on it.
You can hear perhaps the official you're maybe seeing right here at least in these first test here.
It's why Kelly isn't on second.
He's really shown a lot so far.
And when he's on, they say he's on.
And tonight he's gone so far.
So far it's hard enough.
Nothing.
Again, Kelly is hit on the leg.
Yes.
But he's been warned up there and our half.
He's tough on top.
Right?
He does a real good job of stabilizing himself with those legs.
He puts the leg down on the mat with Riggins about ready to get out.
It really takes a position away from where?
Near the end of the second period, the bottom man of the morning.
Now, they've each been worn was that an official warning?
Yes.
Bill Rojas thought that.
We should have been making better moves in the bottom.
Get out.
So there or maybe it's been worn.
And Kelly, once the bottom, this is Regan's chance on top.
But Kelly leads by far and he lets Kelly go.
Well, Regan knows that if he's going to win this match, he's got to take it to him offensively on the field.
It's an uphill battle for John Regan right now because he can't.
Erase the right.
Time.
Kelly has more than two and a half minutes worth.
Hair's a single leg.
Bye bye, Regan.
But Kelly's a good counter wrestling.
So what happens?
He has a razor he what he does, he what Regan does here he gets the guitar and it's five 50, so he's going to stay on his feet.
Oh, with the escape at six the two, the fighting time will count for Kelly.
There's no way he can lose that.
So you actually have to figure it's a it's a five.
Point lead for Kelly.
And again, we have this in this time.
Kelly's fighting hard against it.
Tremendous hit action by Kelly.
Tremendous shot by Reagan.
But the hip action and Kelly really put him out of position.
Kelly wrestled an amazing first two periods, but of course, it's a three period match Kelly's underneath here comes Regan and it's 644 and a 67 the five.
This is a solid call and Kelly is back to get to it.
What a tremendous comeback here.
What a tremendous finish to this match It's 75 but take down we'll bring it within one point take down Regan Kelly trying to control the head He's out with 30 seconds to go it look pretty tired here at this point and it's got to be Kelly he got providing time a great period around here by Regan false start oh well he just started too late there to get the tempo up it was kind of surprising because Regan really got the tempo going at the end but he couldn't get it for the first.
But you really got to give credit to Kelly for that.
Offensive showing he did in the first two periods.
He had a double leg takedown in the first period.
He had a beautiful heel pick in the second, and he was up by five points with riding time before Pat before Regan could make his rally.
A great start by Kelly, great finish by Reagan in the start.
He's just too much to overcome.
Now we have one 30 more and here is a national champion for Iowa.
Penrith at a different weight.
£126 up at 34 against Jeff Gibbons.
I can repeat it on a single day this scramble is not figured out yet.
Penrith is trying to turn away.
He wants to go.
Yeah, Ben.
Pull up on the edge of the mat telling him which way to go.
You see very Davis in the background.
Boy, this is really something else.
A chess match?
No, I've never seen anything quite like that.
And both of them had a lot of presents to where they were to keep from getting in trouble.
Either one of them?
Well, Penrith knows that he.
Has to get something.
Started for Iowa.
He's another single leg again.
Given, shrug it off Good shot.
Good hip action by Gibbons.
Iowa would love to have a show a lot at one 34.
Then they would.
Have a solid showing perhaps through the bottom three ways.
They like to know if Penrith is big enough at one 34 and this match might show a lot of thought a long ways towards deciding.
Circle off the circle circle in which match up well Geoff Givens is a real hard wrestler to wrestle with.
His game is getting better and better.
He's good on his feet and he's got a single leg real low, saying that's the sort of thing that John Smith used last night.
You wonder how much the films they watch there to create that kind of attack.
And as I say, Jeff Gibbons is good on his feet.
He's get on the mat, he's getting better all the time.
He's hard to take down.
That's hard.
That's a hard person to wrestle.
And Jeff Gibbons is one of the very few people to do a good job against John Smith or even come close to him, we should say, because Smith beats everybody.
The Leg by Patrick.
They're trading single leg shots no points here, no points here.
This is like living on the edge.
Gibbons in good shape now.
Unless members can bring him back OII.
We have a lot of strategy here.
Here at the edge of the mat.
Penrith wants to keep him on and keep his knees in a warning against giving them a warning against Gibbons.
And that brings his brother to get the time to talk to officials to find out what this thing is doing is avoiding the fear.
The game is avoiding the game.
Which way too long to go, right?
We still got a wizard out of it.
But he did.
Yeah.
All he did was try to get inside for you heard the bill, Roach said.
He said Gibbons put a wizard out and he stayed in So it's a warning against Gibbons are back on their feet again.
£134 a.
Week, six to nothing.
On two.
Opening match wins.
And here is Gibbons in on a single with Henry Cavill.
That's a lot like the first time down the other way.
And here's what Pennyworth is dangerous, though.
This is not over here.
Penrith likes to be here.
If he doesn't like who he's good there and Bill pulls him off, it Penrith did a nice job and it's almost a patented Penrith move to be sneaky in there and create some action once he's in the scramble and a single leg by Penrith again.
But that one was not solid and.
Gibbons shrugs it out.
Gibbons takes a shot at the corner just in front of the official span.
We have no score, but I don't know that you could say no slacking off.
Oh, well, I'm going to say we've had a lot of action here.
Play 19 seconds to go in.
The first period Gibbons tied up, pull down two on one he wants to come in close.
And push Penrith off the national championship last year and a lower wait one 26.
Iowa State has to be.
Happy with the way it started two wins in a row summit six the three over Martin Collingwood the five and the recap no score here in the.
First period Gibbons gets his choice and takes down.
Our state first all he defers on Yeah, that's right.
That's where you're watching the Iowa Public Television.
What Gibbons needs.
To do, right?
If it weren't for Scott, what Geoff Gibbons needs to do is try to control Penrith here.
If he can ride him for 30 or 40 seconds and show some control, that will go a long ways in the match.
Evans the third and Penrith come down.
It'll just try to ride with those.
If you want to roll switch, roll and he is worried about that temper on escape Oh there they match up.
Well, I don't think it's a real interesting match because they're interesting to see There's a nice shot on the far side by Penrith and this is what a half he's trying to scoop those hips he's trying to scoot those hips and not let Penrith control it.
It just got to be able to control.
It's going to be two points here.
And three to nothing Penrith at 131 about Iowa State against Iowa.
So the Hawkeye fans haven't had a lot to yell about yet.
So I got them started with two quick wins in the lower weights and now we're coming up through one 34 to one 42.
We haven't even reached the nationally number one ranked people two of 50 of 67.
Year well he's got to be able to get out and stay in this match Geoff Givens does and this is the key right here they rolled didn't want to get caught that way.
He well Penrith might try to put lights on.
Gibbons is not mad at getting out of the leagues.
This should be a testing strategy that 134.
Pounds or riding time as in on him 9 seconds.
Or Penrith.
00 his speed starts the hand five comes down against everything to put him on is he underway now he's dangerous on top yes he is very dangerous and the longer he stays on top the harder it's going to be for Geoff Gibbons to get out it's going to gradually help Dale Roach says that was a little bit too tough on the game.
That's Barry Davies, a star of fast hockey teams up.
Adding his energy to the festivities on top again.
Patrick on top doesn't have the legs in you know, this is an important position right here that standing stand the switch.
Gibbons did turn it.
On him, but it was a nice move.
Hendrick was too much in countering him.
He'll manage to ride the period out now.
That was almost a real sweet stand.
The switch was nice action and just give needs to keep it up.
Penrith is controlling him right now, but we have the last period here to see if.
Geoff Gibbons can break into the scoring column.
Well now the question is what does Gibbons want to do?
He said he himself wanted to start on his feet.
He said, No, I want to go down.
He said he wanted to go down and then come out and go on his feet.
But the question is can he get out?
There's Jim Gibbons, who's not sure it's.
Got to be a different situation here, a crucial match and his brother on the match.
Jeff Gibbons, stands up.
The trapped members leg as they come around.
But Penrith is still looking awfully good in that leg right you know, this is where it's almost as if Penrith baits him with that leg right there.
He's Geoff Gibbons has to create some kind of different action here.
He's got to come out clean and throw the arms and come out.
There's a switch.
Didn't work and that was found working Gibbons into some kind of a position where he can put him on his back right.
To get back one.
So I'll definitely need to go to use up top.
Penrith leads by three you're gonna get what's going to happen?
What's gonna happen back Roy he's calling him back.
Yes, on the back.
But they're all what's happening again.
Two and there's two.
And now Gibbons has picked up on his back that's to go on the back.
Oh, well, and now it's my boy.
This was close all the way around.
Come out whether they got to or not, it may have come out.
Like, as far as the difference there.
Doug amazing situation.
Dan Gamble's knocking all six.
One came up with the finger.
That's right.
We had to set the back once.
So.
No.
No, wanted you to know.
I believe the second one was only a one count.
Questionable Yeah.
Well, disagreements here at our harbor hockey arena, but it's going to come out this way.
Penrith leads five, four, four, and he has riding tight.
Which can't.
Which can't be right.
Right here.
He turns that switch into four points because he keeps Penrith on his back for two.
And now Gibbons with a 54 situation has to defend against the single leg shot.
He's actually got a two point deficit here.
Leads by ten points plus riding time.
It's a three point lead, actually 4.6.
The four with.
The escape.
Right.
Oh, just rocking.
Let's go there we have just 25 seconds to go Penrith leads but Iowa State won the first two matches at one 42 it'll be Kelly Mitchell Kelly against Michael Carr That should be fun back this morning well against Penrith Panthers let's go now back in the middle back to the center 9 seconds left it up and it's got to go to higher 00 boy with riding time and seven the more Penrith over given and the Hawkeyes are on the board Well here we go £142 real estate.
It's Mitch Kelly for Iowa one 42 again wild Greg Randall takes care.
Of that Matt hamstring and Michael Carr for Iowa State.
This should be a real.
Running gun they both know how to throw they both not basketball out there I think it's going to be one of.
Those where everybody's going to hold their breath and be up in the air and whichever way it lands.
I don't think either one of them has been out there before.
A big crowd in the Big Eight.
So that should be just about even, you know, how difficult and oh, how such things does that matter?
Time out, I guess.
Kelly has a finger in the eye he came down.
Kelly came down to one 51 58 to Russell for one 42 in place of Randall.
Somebody pointed out to us this week what we could have said, too, is that there's a Michael Carr that McCallister of Oklahoma State came down to a reminder to that later in the telecast will bring him another edition of the best shot.
We Chuck Pat tonight will analyze the technique of Kevin Presser.
Iowa national champion.
Last year that's after 158 times.
Mitch Kelly really likes to control that upper part of the.
Body right there look for the underarm spin here controlling the head front headlock go resting on his able to stop the shot just a little earlier with some good hip action.
Healthy.
Let's go to that we will also have there's a throw.
A throw like guy comes back does he have a takedown do nothing.
Oh, nothing.
Well, that's the kind of thing that can happen here with these two out.
He'll go in that control .0.00, it's that again.
Mitch Kelly gets the hips in and whips him over right here, whips him over to his back.
But right here, the shoulder, the right shoulder, Will Roach said, did not get controlled.
And Michael Carr, according to Bill Roach, was on his way out the entire time.
Tonight.
It's all the same situation right here now.
He Liquor Control, you know, he says to now this would be very big if Kelly could lock it up it could be very big.
He's got a long time to go Mitch Kelly got him in up.
Well, okay.
He still had him in there.
And it's hard just trying to keep from getting him know making sure that Mr. Kelly is not choking it's been so close Oh, boy.
And it's a five point move for us.
Kelly, let's go you know, for him to go to work and that had to take a lot out of, like, the car boy.
It really did.
But the alternative was worse for Iowa State it's six to three.
Iowa State leaves Iowa.
That was you know, Mitch Kelly was able to take it right back to him on the same move.
It's Michael Carr walked right into that and both there's the first point for Carr on an escape, five to one.
He likes the throw.
So I'm sure he wanted to be in that position.
I for one at the end of the first period as well Kelly, if Kelly can do it again here, he's chosen up right here.
It's Kelly uses his hips again.
Look at this.
He elevates and uses depth, goes chest to chest.
And he was able to bring the chest back on top of him.
Great control with his hands and his chest coming back shoulder to shoulder.
He was able to stabilize and stabilize himself.
Enough to score and hold him for a long time.
Come off of close.
To six points for the Hawkeyes here.
But Michael can't really throw a gutty performance they're kept off his back and he got out, got the escape.
And now we have a five to one match going in the second period.
All that was the situation for Carr.
He lives by the sword and he almost died by the sword on that one.
And Kelly picked up.
Five on a beautiful headlock.
And the Hawks now lead in this match, five to one.
We have effort.
Adam Krieger coming up next at 150.
You know, Carr is dangerous but coach.
Kevin said that the thing that he worries about is that one mistake in a match or two mistakes.
He's very, very talented.
He's hoping that that's the one mistake that he was going to make.
He dodged the bullet has got to be off.
Let's go.
Guys.
Definitely a mistake.
Kelly doing some pushing, doing very well in this year's car, right?
Like you said, he likes the throw.
Here he is trying to get the double underhook.
Kelly wrap around there.
Here's where that hit back.
He comes in but this time, Carr has a very good blazer and they go out of bounds a lot and he scores.
He didn't have an arm trapped in that bear hug.
And so Carr was able to reach back and get the over hooks to Whizzer and stay out of the.
Bad situation with a minute and about 10 seconds to go in the second period.
We certainly don't see much lower.
Leg attack here, though.
They're really going upper body.
It's a wild match.
Five, two, one extra points make a lot of difference.
Underarm spin by Kelly and here yes he's trying to finish in here but he did a nice job getting out I think here's a warning against the car we got just as he took Kelly out of bounds in this 101.
Oh well that's pretty close.
Four points right there for car.
Yes.
Circle now our way to get under the arm.
He couldn't clear his head Kelly, looking solid in the middle, confident out there.
He needs five, four while car wants to throw.
Kelly wants to throw.
They both her there's a trick driving hard against Kelly gets Clarkson he's got 20 oh I think this is a better chance for Kelly it's it's a it's two against the clock right now it's against the clock what a 305. near fall.
Coach Gibbons has to wonder how many times Carr is going to walk into that that's down how many times he's going to let Kelly get his hips over right here.
He whips him over again.
He keeps him tight, goes chest to chest.
Another bullet dodged, but can't he come back?
He's down nine points.
But that makes a big difference because it's extra points he's this is our major decision territory.
We're in the third period and car starts now, at least this time.
He's got chest to chest on the bottom end.
The two cars reach for those legs, but he hasn't really gone after them.
I don't think he wants to be up there Kelly looks terrific on the upper body.
Scott.
Well, car better start looking way up coming to the upper body from lower leg attacks.
Something like that very ended up but not given Kelly there.
It's to get him out.
He's got to start pushing him away, let him up and score and he can't go upper body with Kelly tonight 11 the ball and to make sure the 11 the set this is the only way right now that he can get back in this match and then if he gets back in it's a possibility he can catch it.
But Kelly has been awful strong with the big move toe to toe it's been Kelly all right that makes it 12 to six tackle par is tied up in there again comes with us with a bear hug himself this time on the defender and he gets the takedown well they oh he wasn't able to clear his head until that time.
13 to eight now after the escape a minute left as long warning on Kelly you think Mitch is getting a little tired no, no, no, no.
Not about 13 to eight you think you got to look for Greg Randle who is normally at this late it's a five point lead be blocking for Kelly.
You know I don't know that this is a matter of being tired or cut weight.
I think it's just a matter of change in strategy and getting smart and staying out of what he just got into.
Again, he's lucky he was off the mat there.
Carr needs to change his strategy from his first and second period and keep with what he's been.
Doing in this last.
Period.
38 seconds to go.
It's Kelly leading by five with writing time that can't be erased.
Now, again, you see, Kelly locked it up you got to go to work.
26 seconds to go.
This if it were at this level, five.
Point difference or a six point difference.
It would be a what would be a decision than a stalling call against Kelly.
13 nine.
That could take away a major decision Kelly can no longer take him down for a major to say right unless he does what he did in the first grade and take him back to be back to 1311 and go well he saw he's won ten the three in the last period but Kelly has pile up but I think his only chance here Doug is to let him go look for the bear hug into to his back inside.
8 seconds there.
That's what he's going to do.
Here he goes 65.
He just ran out of time.
14, 11 and the victory goes to Kelly to win the boy with the big moves up north there.
So my boy throw and the winner Megyn Kelly 15 to 11 he brings the Hawkeyes back into this lead it's now 66 after £143 and here's the one that a lot of people can see well I'm still not over that last March in one way your heart got to go off of both of them Kelly came up with the big moves Carr came back what a stage set for this match right here effort against me.
You know that Hepburn and the national champion has never beaten Iowa State of the Dauphin.
Krieger's Big Hepburn and the only loss either one of them has this year and that he'll pick my trigger again.
I almost got to take down one of his pet moves these days.
The story's going to be told right here, Doug, in this first period of whoever comes out on the attack.
Well, we've got to be we know.
Springer is probably going to come out on the attack like he just showed.
It's up to Heffernan to create a mood right.
Here of action.
Definite.
A senior from North Olmstead, Ohio, Krieger, a sophomore from Mason City, Iowa, one of the best wrestlers to come out of Iowa.
And a long time to play against the Wizards from Heffernan.
Where's it going to go?
It's not much of a wizard and Heffernan hands tied it very well.
Very well.
Gregor can't get him off his feet.
Well, now, he did two nothing.
Trigger this is where Kreuger has really improved over the last year.
He has really developed his skills on his feet, and he's against one.
Of the best in the nation is Heffernan, right here on his feet.
The telling story.
Heffernan has to get up and create some.
Action if he's going to be.
In this match.
Do not trigger.
He took him down in a similar way, which set out a few people here yeah, that's Kreager and on him.
He's been up there on.
Top against people this year.
Here's a key right here.
Heffernan has to come out hard he cannot let Kreger get on top, put the legs in and control the match like he's starting to do right here.
Boy, that takes a lot out of you when you let those legs in and you start getting.
Worn down to.
Got to go to something well, top, bottom, keep out is Gregory Barnes finally has Heffernan back down off his base again.
And the official Bill Rhodes calls him away.
You know, it's hard to call either man for doing something because they're both working against the best he is.
I was just thinking about that, too.
And Kruger was really working hard, high on the side there to try to turn him.
And Heffernan was working hard to come out of it, and they were going straight.
We can make a move down, right?
And you got to get away from this.
Try to keep that leg out, try to keep the leg out and clearing.
So clear the hitch right here.
Up there, he was able to do it, and that was the key.
He cleared the hips ever.
And we're back on the feet again to the one trigger heading into Crabbe.
Right.
The key to getting out of the crowd.
I used to be able to.
Clear those hips, turn around and get out of there.
And that's what Heffernan did.
Now, Heffernan again would like to move them closer because Krieger doesn't like the tie up out here.
He likes to work in the open position, and Heffernan would like to get in and lock up work from his position.
There's a shot too far by Krieger that Heffernan couldn't.
Counter it's two to one trigger.
66 in the meet well, Krieger is one the what hands on here in this situation that tie.
Up 0221.
One takedown.
Krieger had it.
He got an outside single leg on Heffernan in the first period.
I don't think you're starting a little faster in there.
Lost last match.
Krieger is going to defer first choice Iowa Heffernan Who wants to go where?
On the field.
What's going on?
Yes, that's what they expected.
There was no score in the last time they met.
In the day, the black in fact, it took down to the last 6 seconds of the second period for Krieger to score his first takedown.
He won the match a little faster start this time.
Heffernan who is an outstanding wrestler on his feet against Krieger, who has become.
An outstanding strike.
Now you see Heffernan with the upper body the front headlock.
He'd like to shake the trigger out of this, get him in a bad spot.
But Krieger fought his way out.
Right.
I pointed out earlier what Regan was doing.
Krieger did the same thing.
He did not allow Heffernan to control that front headlock was keeping him on his knees.
He got right up to his feet.
Krieger's had some neck problems, you know, I don't know whether it's a nerve or a muscle or what.
You saw him wince a little bit on that out-of-bounds position that's affected him.
Some years on this thing and on the leg.
Now he's got to finish this single right here.
Heffernan does.
He's even going to step back and stutter, step lower his level.
He's going to drive right through.
Catch the other leg trip he's got to finish it here.
Let's go.
And got to use it a lot of time.
He has a minute to finish but he really doesn't.
He's got to finish it now.
Because the longer you stay up there, the longer Tim Kreager has to get that hip action in and the wings are in.
And he was able to dodge a bullet.
There all right.
To the one Krieger leads.
Oh, they've been tough.
Every match.
You're beginning to look a little tired there to go.
I've been in every one of these matches.
It's unbelievable.
Our our viewers have to be just getting a kick out of this.
This is great.
US and I look up at the top of the south stands, and I don't see any empty seats anymore.
They packed it in the night.
What a great tribute to this meet.
What a great year for college wrestling.
In the stands.
Iowa Public Television, it's the hawks against the Cyclones in Carver, Hawkeye, and it's 66 after two after four matches.
Now, Iowa State, one, two, then Iowa, one, two.
And now we're against the top two wrestlers in the country.
By everybody's standards, at 100.
And 51.
Let's go circle back to the one in.
Favor of Traeger, the man in the red.
You got to take down first period it started this period on the feet.
Nobody scored joining the red light.
If you'd like to write in with comments and criticisms about our 11th season of college, wrestling coverage, here's the address.
Iowa Public Television Box.
64 50.
Johnston, Iowa.
That's our new address.
Round 5013150131 We'll show it to you again later.
We'll have a little memory.
Welcome to our college wrestling season at the end of our telecast tonight, too.
So stick around.
All right.
Finger starts on the bottom.
Heffernan is out.
It's now three to one in favor of three.
You know, there's a lot of action by Gregor there.
He stood up.
Controlled the hands.
So they wasn't going to go anywhere.
Went into a standing switch.
Was able to get the skate there for one point by continuing in a series of action.
It's very important here on the feet now on to settle it Trigger arm in the collar is able to kick his leg away from Heffernan You know, it's got to be weighing on people's minds.
Heffernan has never defeated an Iowa State wrestler.
To dual meet.
Doug and it's coming down to the last minute and 15 seconds for his last opportunity They both took shots bigger one and Heffernan followed.
Now Heffernan has hit on the single but a good result of good power with a little more mouth by Heffernan and a takedown 33 that was pretty.
He did what Krieger did to get out.
He didn't stay with one move he got.
In wasn't able to complete.
It and he went right into another series snapped him by spun around for the two points.
Nice job by Jim Heffernan right here.
He went in for the single leg lift it up.
Wasn't going anywhere.
Right here.
A sign right here and goes around for two.
What a snap down.
He just got him out of position so much that it affected him like that.
Now, for two, three All right.
There was some speculation if if Heffernan could take figured out why he or she could beat him, that would be the only way to And we have.
Plenty of 7 seconds to go.
Yeah.
All it's coming down to a barn burner finish Here's a warning against Krieger Heffernan has a leg, but can he keep it?
8 seconds to go.
8 seconds.
No, he can't.
And it's got to be trigger again.
And for three you know, you watch him, and you.
Wonder if they've settled anything.
But it's trigger for Iowa State.
And we come to the halfway point between Iowa State and Iowa with the cyclones in Iowa City leading by 39 to six and another thriller between those two.
Always low scoring.
Always tough Nine more Iowa State and six for Iowa.
Really look like they both had enough left to go another period.
It's just just like shooting in on two rocks right there.
Here we go at £158 John Heffernan who just saw his brother lose against Stewart Carter of Iowa State, who has been a remarkably improved wrestler, one of the most improved wrestlers in the country.
When you say to him oh.
He's he's really developed into a solid wrestler.
He starts slow.
You don't see him really, really get going on full temple until that second and third period.
He's good at stalking off his opponent, figuring out where the openings are and then just creating a mood of dominance.
I remember at one 67, it'll be Alger against Jackson.
Nobody going to go away from that one.
And Chip Morelli and Metzger then came and Volker and Sinclair and Coach know no place for anybody to relax And Heffernan has a hard time.
Every time you pop in the mouth, I think.
Well, let's when we're through this £158 match.
Remember, we were going to come up with Iowa Public Television's special feature called Best Shot Pattern.
And tonight Chuck will analyze the technique of Kevin Dresser who was Iowa's 1986 NCAA champion.
And right after they meet tonight we'll have our wrestling memories presentation look back over some of the high points of the season 158.
Heffernan in on the single-A Potter Wizards and they go on about a lot of difference in physique here because Heffernan.
Is very tall rangy and Carter is more compact.
Carter really probably could wrestle 150 of fellow by the name of Tim Krieger in the glass now but he has really developed himself and put himself in the lineup at one 58 and you know that.
He's going to be in there for high all-American honors There he is on the single right here.
He's able to really take everyone out of position and get the two points.
He was a strong really fighting self in there, controlled that leg, didn't have much of a.
Chance to recover attendance.
14 here on this single here he just drives.
Through shoulder, drives through covers the leg on the other side comes up for two.
The attendance tonight Tim 14,759 Great crowd tonight that you're seeing co-owner of Iowa State after his first takedown riding Heffernan he puts him down.
Flat right he's controlling.
The wrist looking for the arm bars here he's going to look to try to try to kill the guy to get out the hip and go to work oh Heffernan can't get to his eyes.
Carter brings him right back down again when he can't really look strong.
He started out even earlier and he.
Usually does here in the first period.
He's really showing a strong.
Performance right here is controlling Heffernan as the army hind his back and his hips down needs to come out now try to put him on his back.
Heffernan needs to come up, get his hips off the mat.
Got to use it.
Work for fall now, needs to get his chest up.
As a matter of fact, he got to get off the hips and work with ball now.
You heard the official Bill.
Roach talking to Carter Rodman got a good word.
And again, Carter flattens him out, takes the arm.
Underneath two on one right there.
Carter is really trying to use that risk, get the arm behind and.
Go chest to trust to try to drive him over.
It's not being overly risky, but he's still trying to turn him on.
Now.
Carter has the arm.
Bard going to bring in base.
Bonds, really not.
Giving him any reason to worry about coming out front because it's not coming up.
Tough ride by Carter.
He got a minute and 53 seconds worth of riding.
Time out and we will announce the winner or the sense of time in attendance again.
14,750.
Which will be held.
And you see some of the people here in Carver hockey arena fan a little shot over the right so it looks like a blank spot that's crescent row and hopefully that's not a blood winner that there are a lot of people here to see this May 2001 of those paper magazine and another.
Lot of them ready to write about that next match coming up.
All right John.
Heffernan starts on top.
Right right or right against Carter.
He could call him unable to stay behind the arms.
Carter got good position and came out fast.
I didn't see them make up their minds there to Carter.
Defer.
They were both looking away.
We're looking at the crowd.
Carter 80 for half rock circle.
Carter and Carter went down.
Yes, right off Powell makes the difference because you look ahead to the next match, next period, only through.
You have to say that Iowa State really is in a position we want to be in as far as where.
The media is, what they have left and ahead in this match.
Carter very active two he's one of the more active on the second wrestlers on his feet works out a good high crotch switch to a double duty.
What he did so well he went in on that high crotch.
He controlled the leg and then he cut off the double, stayed close, stayed tight and drove in the opening.
Now they're trying to get extra points here because they're some tough.
Wrestlers coming up from Iowa later on.
They'd like to be able to pick up a few extra John Hepburn and a sophomore against Carter, Iowa, guarding against Heffernan.
I'm looking at one of the more improved wrestlers in the nation.
Really.
That's guard of the.
Year to the end in Stuart Carter out of Columbus.
Coach Young, he gets even more.
Let's go out of Waterloo.
Columbus had him in high school he's been around for just 53 years, senior.
And he's found a spot for himself this year.
At £158 cycled.
Well he has lost a couple of matches earlier but he's in almost everybody that's been there and he drew with he beat the man from Penn State Michigan beautiful single leg from central Texas.
And it's 71.
Hey, you know, Carter, Mitch Kelly, some of the others are good example of persistence.
You stay in a good program long enough.
You're going to get your opportunity.
More than likely.
It's Kelly Stewart Carter.
They're getting their opportunities this year and they're taking advantage.
Yeah, that's a neat story.
If you're just joined by in the six in favor of Iowa State, the winners for Iowa State, all three points, victory so far.
Summit, Kelly and Krieger, the losers for Iowa State, the winners for Iowa, Penrith and Kelly it's Mitchell.
Well, Heffernan's in on the shot.
You know he didn't look like he was really convinced he was going to get it right here and I'll Carter's looking on the.
Leg across and this is going to be a stalemate stalemate five point lead riding time.
Yes, almost 2 minutes.
It cannot be erased yet again.
There he is in on it now.
He's got to finish it.
He's got to convince himself that he can get the takedown here by doing it.
It just comes down to whether or not you're going to take advantage of the situation you're in and score well, you have the opportunity or if you're going to sit there and let the other man create a situation where the stalemate comes in, you've got to take your score when you have.
And now Carter looks like he's in a good spot.
That's why he gets a stalemate.
Out of it.
At stalemate.
He got the other he got the far leg again.
He reached across and managed to hook it up.
Good night time.
He got clutch.
We've got to get it cleaned up.
He may come over.
It's a blood, that's all.
We have a little mop up job here.
Just wailing with John Heffernan right now and Bill Roach is going to clean up the bat a little bit.
You see Dan Gable there on the left.
He knows he has ahead of him.
He has Royce Alger.
Coming up against Jackson.
That's the Iowa State crowd, by the way.
It's not injury time and Rico Kimberly's still ahead for Gabriel game at Iowa State has kept them all close and has won that battle for three out of five so far and is leading here Carter seven of two over John F for that third period.
A minute left handed a red go away he's got riding time not the race so it's eight to two and so a takedown.
We're making an eight point victory which would give the team for well Heffernan there's the first time there's a single leg he needs a cut off right here.
He used to be able to cut off or come around and change and attack the angle conversions in a decent.
Situation to continue for a stalemate.
And now Carter lifting up goal two.
No, not to there.
He has snatched a single there.
But Heffernan's able to put the leg straight down.
And get out of it.
Seven The two Heffernan has been able to keep Carr Carter from scoring, but he has not been able to score himself.
This is an important last 23 seconds for both teams because Heffernan surely doesn't want to give up a 4.4 points to the other.
Team gets a takedown for Carter, makes it a major decision.
That's very important, but it's only about 13 seconds to go after I don't know, five.
And so it is eight to two 43 a standard decision for Stuart Carter just about the same as last time it was nine.
The two they left the first man and Stuart Carter wins after Iowa State takes the lead.
The Cyclones are now up.
12 to six going into the last four matches at the end of the £158 match in.
Iowa public television bringing you Iowa against Iowa State with four matches to go it's the cyclones 12 the hawks six and we're now up against looking at the two top wrestlers in the £167 class Bryce Alger of Iowa and Kevin Jackson of Iowa State they were rated the other way around until out to beat Jackson up in eight 12 to six.
The Cyclones lead they have decisions by summit and Kelley and Krieger and Carter and Iowa has decisions by Penrith and Mitch Kelly.
That's the way the scoring has gone.
All decisions were three points allowed you wants to stay up high if the underhook here create is on offense because if you open it up if Kevin Jackson for his double leg like he did last time he's hardly any stop and I called him a freight train and if you saw it you know what I mean and you saw lights out your last time really down in the think tank.
Glenn Latham of Oklahoma State, he pinned him early Harris Jackson especially a leg shot as we scored.
Yep Al Gore has a wizard to to come out.
Or something like that, which started.
The last time.
Jackson on top as a nice shot, nice single leg, and he is able to stay with it.
Roy tried to kick out.
Jackson was able to stay with it for the two.
One of the big crowd favorites in Iowa City, as you know, Royce Alger from Lisburn just up the road.
He's been undefeated this year.
Each team has an undefeated wrestler, Al.
For Iowa.
He just got off the rock and trigger state, undefeated for the cycle before you let him in to get him to the middle.
To the question sir, full circle back.
Jackson has been a three time all-American officially.
I was here last year.
It was a one 50 and I wish we got him in the leg but couldn't hold.
Well, technically, Jackson probably has to be.
Considered a better.
Wrestler.
But as far as guts determination Royce is hard to equal.
This is going to be really, really interesting.
Saw Jackson lock up.
He's not afraid to throw.
That's what he's one of his specialties.
He's tough.
Make it easy.
Brings the crowd blasting and yep, I got it.
I got to see Barry Davis behind the Iowa bench.
He's always.
Up kind to carries people on to the one.
Jackson had a single leg takedown in the first.
Minute.
It must be tremendous.
To have somebody like Barry Davis enthusiasm you know, you've got to be enthusiastic.
You got that enthusiastic Mike Good with Barry Davis in the room.
How can we all help with the.
Enthusiastic and Iowa wrestling.
Al Alger and Jackson?
Last time, Jackson got way ahead and Alger pushed him and pushed.
Him and pushed him saying that maybe Jackson got maybe got he said he had a funny Gary Alger was pressured pressured and pressured, and eventually that was stalling.
And Al Gore, one great comeback single day out you know, it looked like Jackson gaining that leg.
So he had something in mind.
You like getting up there by the tail.
He said it looked like he said, come on, let's take this pick this leg.
Well, and it's two to one.
You don't give voice Alger that many opportunities like that.
But it was able to do it that time and get it got Reagan let him in.
Referee Bill Rhodes was telling Alger to let Jackson in.
And so he does.
He comes out to the middle again.
Jackson has not made a good offensive move here.
In a few seconds.
No, in a minute.
And Bill Roach is watching him very carefully.
Rick Jackson leads to the one I was three weeks down.
Iowa State takes down.
Down in Jackson.
His team leads 12 to six.
We have Jim Morelli.
And Metzger next, rollicking against Voelker at one night he certainly Gary Coleman heading right now the cyclones lead by six 12 to six time.
How would you like to control Jackson here he'd like to keep him down and show some control gets him right in time you handle him very well with a tight leash that's definitely a lot.
Not what Jackson had in mind.
When he chose down, though.
I'm sure he had in mind exploding.
Out and getting one point you're on Iowa Public Television.
Dr. Tim Johnson Duncan and Carver Hawkeye are in fact, Al Gore on top.
He has 20 seconds of riding time I think.
Right.
A man stick bottom man.
Yes.
Jackson has cautioned that in on it.
Jackson gets to his feet, but Al Gore's forces him back down again.
That tight race let's go hustle back.
So that Algiers really proven right now that he was no fluke.
And that last match force is 25 and that proves that.
But this is his second opportunity with Jackson.
And I think he's really showing that this is an even man.
Harrison can reach back to the head and got himself loose.
The state makes it three to one in favor of Jackson will be on their feet again with a minute to go in the second period gone right time headgear.
Here we go.
Repair all again.
They lock up Algerian on the leg Jackson under.
Hooks, fights him off and again the headgear comes apart 12 to six Iowa State over Iowa.
Jackson here by to.
Show him we haven't seen Jackson really go for the legs that single leg shot was about what we saw the first that's kind of surprising the one by out there hugging he came out on top Big move by Al Gore makes it 33 right here Al Gore gets the bear hug covers the hips well comes around and doesn't let him give.
A chance he doesn't give Jackson the chance to throw the Whizzer in because he's so tight with the chest.
15 seconds to go.
In the second period, Al Gore has been very tough on top Boy, was he tough there.
Reacted just so well.
That was a real important move or series right there for Al Gore because Jackson wanted that last 12 seconds to get one point and he may have given everything he had for that last period now.
And he got right.
He tried one dominant to Al Gore gets his choice.
Al Gore wants down.
Let's go oh, it's a big one.
It's a big one because Iowa has RICO temporarily next would.
Like to get some big.
Points out of him.
Going into the heavier weights when they're home.
They're hard.
But Jackson was able to throw his weight in there just at the right time.
You know, right to get him to look comfortable at 67 when you're saying, I think Roy South does not believe that anyone can beat him right now.
And that's the difference right out there.
His belief in himself and he knows where he's at really put the pressure on him or the three that's not the double leg after this game that Jackson was so good at right there that was a a feeble attempt at his best move was hurt by Jackson.
But again, it's Al Gore in the commanding position.
Well just got control the arm right here he's got the trap.
Nice job by Jackson.
Coming out of that.
That's a nice job by Kevin Jackson.
He really, really dodged the bullet right there because Al Gore had the answer.
Jackson was able to come out and face it but Jackson has been doing that on.
Defense and not.
On offense.
And that's the difference here in the last two periods.
It's surprising the match is four, two, three right now.
It's really been all Al Gore for the last game period since the early single Take Takedown we are at one 67.
Jackson has been worn and unless he makes a move, I am quite sure that something is going to happen.
Is and also the right time is right.
Wait a minute.
It's 54 seconds.
It's not a riding time points.
So a takedown by Jackson could still tie it he's in on that.
But Al Gore is able to control the underhook and put the hips in body to avoid takedown package.
Well, now they called Iowa for stalling.
They're calling Al Gore for blocking with the elbow.
No.
6 seconds to go.
No.
Right.
Nobody time.
53, a takedown to tie it.
Kevin Jackson but can he do it on Al Gore in 6 seconds?
I don't think so.
And he can't oh, right.
Oh, the winner for the second time in this match up, Roy South So the battles of the top two in 50 and 67, the same way they did last night.
Right in the number one ranked people kept their number one rank kings this time.
Now here comes Rico Jim Morelli against Steve Metzger you know, they're looking for the fall here.
They're looking for big points.
But Steve Metzger is about where he's a fighter and he'll be the last one to give in to any kind of extra points.
So it's going to be real, real interesting.
It's a three point team lead for Iowa State after seven matches in the black Chipper L.A. who has lost only once this year up in an intriguing call to Booker Bedford on the all-American from Southern Illinois out here.
Now, stay there.
And separately has had no close matches this year.
Circle round 17 wins it up by fall.
You saw him hit my gut earlier.
Oklahoma State last week.
Jeff Rice out of you out here winner again tonight over Kevin Jackson.
He's an intense young man he really keeps the pressure on.
You know, Rico Chip really has that national championship on his mind.
He just wants to get on that Raleigh.
He wants to get to the Big Ten's win and he wants to get to the NCAA.
You start rolling through.
He wants that gold medal for the.
First time in his career.
The last time these.
Two men met 14 to five was not the overwhelming score of some of the people thought it was 14 to five, which was a major decision for chip around James.
And it took two and a half.
Minutes in the first period last time the chip really to score his first points.
So this is not a typical year you got a minute and a half with no.
Bob no score I have it off here he's a very strong Connery you know you've seen him enough years now you don't have to be told there.
I guess got you get out there.
And put yourself right where he wants you.
I got a hold of a few guys like that when I rest.
No more than I'd like.
Let's go.
Both men are one.
Of those guys.
Paul Well, we haven't decided it yet.
So 40,750 people.
Friend of yours there, Tim that is the Ricoh fan.
He has Ricoh, a number.
One on his shirt.
14,000.
749 people play really Jim really has the singular oh he looks like it's right on stood down and I take that 2 minutes and 20 seconds into the match 100 went looking ahead.
Wally Kane against Walter.
Scott here on this single leg he was just able to pressure Dale and stay with him and they called the two because they showed control with all his supporting all Metzger's supporting points on the.
Mat hit a hit Jim really likes to cross fans at that cradle to do it and just right now.
This is an important.
Match for Iowa to win by extra points.
Rico knows it.
Everybody in the stands knows it.
Out of.
Bounds.
They've used all but 17 seconds.
Of the first period, the quarter, and they come over.
Metzger has run cut him in the eye.
I don't think he knows it.
Oh, go.
You have a ticket.
For section double, a roll section 45 or section.
Rather.
In the long history of Iowa against Iowa State, there have been some streaks in Iowa, one ten in a row up until last year, and Iowa State won six in a row in the early years.
But you can see that was over 18 years.
They were there were a lot of breakdowns in the series there were some recently before the 1970s.
I just can't imagine the series never happening or being stalled or whatever.
It's just good to have them wrestle good wrestling.
When you look up to see all these people no.
No, no, no, no.
14,760 here tonight typically leads to the one where all the three to.
5 seconds to go.
Know pile up your choice Joyce goes to temporarily.
I would.
Be first he defers red down and so Metzger goes down that.
Metzger is a really hard worker.
He's got limited skills but he's a he's a real good man.
And Coach Gibbons calls him the kind of kid the kind of guy he'd want his daughter to marry.
You know.
I met his wife who he just got married to in December, and she's from around where I grew up.
She's from Minneapolis, Iowa.
So that's good.
Her parents now know that Coach Gelman thinks that their daughter married a real top class guy, so he was awake.
I hope they're watching and feel good about it.
Yes.
It's in the middle of it.
Feel good about the score now.
It's 22.
After Metzger escapes.
Chip O'Reilly hasn't put the thunder out yet.
There's a nice snap down to Florida.
Two now in favor of Chip O'Reilly.
What do you think it and an injury here?
Metzger is hurt.
That's great.
Stuff his thumb.
It's a thumb.
He has a thumb wrapped up, snapped him down, and it did.
Land on his thumb right there.
And a pre injured thumb, as we can tell by the tape.
He's coming back in.
18 seconds.
To go in the second period Iowa 12 Iowa State, 12 Iowa guys.
After seven matches you know one of the keys.
Tonight was that the Iowa State team would not be intimidated by this big crowd and by wrestling here at Iowa.
I don't really feel that they have.
Looked like they've been intimidated now none of the big four has lost against any of the other big four this year and in a home heat home team has been able to face prevail one outs.
Well so far Metzger is doing what I was state.
Really is expecting him to do or want him to do.
I want him to stay out of scrambles.
They want him to control to stay out of any type of Fleury situation because Rico has a habit in the floor.
He putting them on his back and keeping him there.
That's key.
And a takedown again, this is the first time that Rico has been ahead by three.
Good again that snap out.
Snap the head down.
And then spin around behind the top man in.
38 seconds to go second period Metzger gets to his feet trailing by three.
One he lets them go 6.000.
Get a pencil between periods We'll give you that address again but right into.
Your comments or anything like say about our college wrestling series you have that between periods you see the time left and.
Six time or going temporarily over Metzger.
Now here's the address.
If you'd like to make a comment some way about our college wrestling season, a repeat here college wrestling wow.
Iowa public television box.
64 50.
Johnston, Iowa 501311.
The situation we're in right now.
Metzger would like nothing better than to get a ride of about 30 or 40 seconds to keep this thing close if they get back to their feet.
When I got.
Him he's stalling.
On top.
What I've gotta call a penalty against Chip or Chip or Ellie Metzger was called the stalling on time Push it away.
You don't know when he's pushing.
All he's doing is locking them off.
Okay, Coach, in on him on top.
Jim Gibbons went out there.
Nothing came of.
That.
He got the speaker's peace of mind.
Give them Chip O'Reilly is out, at least to the mat.
That's where he wants to be.
thereAnd and it's a pin for Rico's chipper, Ellie.
That's what he does best to counter what I said.
Hey, Coach Gibbons did not want Metzger to get in a scrambling situation, and that's exactly what happened there.
He was in on this single chip, really was able to hop, skip, jump, go into a scramble.
And he ended up with a neck wrench and a pin.
And that's worth two decisions.
And so hold on Hawkeyes lead 15 to 12 and Iowa State has to win both of these last two matches tied into that fall they have to win them both Saturday.
But they could do it Bulger takes down.
Kane right away okay go up.
Roy we come to heavyweight again I think.
In Jim with it this is going to be an interesting match here.
Kane's a goal and that really.
I think helps Bowker out because he gets going if the if if the slow match, sometimes it hurts.
Okay, that's the escape.
Here comes Kane.
Walker was just able to horse it up Walker got his head, but Kane's very aggressive.
He didn't stand still.
When he got taken down, he came back up and really put the pressure back on Let's see what happened.
Right here.
Walker was able to stop, but he hit his chin.
Came up really?
Jarvis neck right there.
Now he stays right now.
Those guys these days, that's what Bill Rhodes is saying.
He's dead.
He practically got knocked out there.
But he had his.
Chin on the spine, right?
Right in the center of the back.
Got it.
But here comes Walker.
It's two to one.
Three years ago, Walker against Cain, Iowa, now leads 15 to.
12 those extra points, just as people thought they might have made a difference.
Kimberly's fall the circle in that one 70.
Seven year Frank a takedown of the spin around back to him and there is a back point he didn't call it two yet he got two there at the last but it looked like he had called too early but he did.
Okay so it's three to two.
I look down at the right down three I look up and I see him Cal is looking for two on a reversal.
He gets it for the three now in favor of okay all these have been tussles.
Every one of them Al Bowker has changed flat where he wants them up and gets to his feet and like the hand fight him if he could.
But Bowker takes him out of.
Bounds instead.
We have a minute, 3 seconds to go in the three minute first period.
43 Voelker plays.
Cain's feisty Voelker really knows he's in for a fight here and he's got to concentrate and look for good position and good attacks.
15 to 12.
Oh, really?
Oh, Iowa has come back.
And the big one was a fall by Chipper Lee.
Well, now they're even escaped for four out of the face.
Now Walker ties up two.
On one a little better to run that's what Colter does best.
He's in on the single here.
He's looking to finish it.
He's got to stay tight up, and that can counterintuitively, he kept the opening there came did open, did not have to tighten up.
Now he's got to finish and he looks to come across the double leg.
The finish on either hooks with his leg will come across with his right arm.
There he goes by.
But time is a back to go.
He'll never get it before the period's over.
And it's 441 a strong first period Gable's really into this match.
I asked him if he was going to.
Wear the same outfit bidding war against Oklahoma State.
He says, I don't worry about that stuff.
I just put on what my wife tells me to wear.
She lays it out for me.
I was thinking he might be superstitious, he's superstitious, he just wears whatever his wife says.
That's pretty good deal.
I do the same thing.
Volkers starts on the bottom.
With a 44 tie and comes out with Herschel Walker Eric Volkers ranked second in the country.
Raleigh came out and then finally had a chance.
To wrestle, and.
He's looking so tough.
He's an old newcomer.
Yeah, he's been in the Iowa program a long time.
He's been out of high school for about five years now, really getting his opportunity you got you got to get out these guys before it's your out of bounds.
The minute.
12 seconds left.
Second period, both around town.
Here's the woman that lays out his clothes right there.
His biggest fan, his most loyal supporter, Kevin Gable.
Wearing the black and gold tonight.
Did you get through something else, Doug?
Yeah, no, not at all.
Do you think Dan laid that out for her?
What a man's more than what a man Robert can say now.
And was crushed behind you 64.
Volcker overcame him.
Really?
Iowa State has to win both these last two matches in order to beat Iowa.
Hawks need to win one to make it really interesting.
You already knew he was he'd like to have that three point lead.
And so many times it comes down to him back in Iowa against Iowa State.
Over the years.
So many times well, you know, it really comes down in game all night long, guys.
This is an important meet for a lot of reasons.
But winning 39 in a row never losing.
And Kyra Hawk has to be on our minds right now.
And on all the fans minds.
62504 by one.
I got to be an offense, guys.
Let's go.
30 seconds to go on back out of the now when we block it in the real you know he came but you know he's been wrestling some.
Tough people and they're vocal wasn't he not a single cane had an underhook there it was able to ward him off did a nice strong job late.
In the second period.
20 seconds.
To go but now.
Neither wrestler is really setting up for a very offensive move right now they're kind of.
Leaning into each other there's the end of the second period when he reached the end of the meet tonight kicks down we'll.
Have a look at the season pass with our wrestling memory set.
That'll be after the heavyweight match the chance to.
Listen to the music as we go in.
I'm back and look over what happened this year on Iowa.
Public television coverage.
Raleigh can can tie it right out.
And he did six, six it is now time.
But Iowa State does have riding time only by 5 seconds to add poker.
Got a double leg and now that writing time is right you go to work you got to get off the hips, get the hips the.
That's the second take.
Down for balls.
Your game has won.
Yes.
Let's go.
Well, not really.
You know, you said Iowa State needs to win these last two matches.
We figured Iowa State would need to win six matches to win this.
Me if they win the last two matches, that's number six.
Flood, a warning against poker tomorrow night.
Well, particularly because of the threat of a pin.
Bye bye, Chip.
Earlier this hour.
And we saw it face you.
It was an excellent match even.
For Metzger at anyway seven to four.
And then he got into a scramble.
Down and temporarily pinned.
He killed himself.
Eight to six motor.
Leads.
But he's been warned it's just about work.
The writing time clock here comes change.
I call.
It potentially dangerous.
On the night there I tell you, the beginning of the year, Raleigh Kane.
Wasn't even talked about.
You heard about Martin, you heard about Sherritt.
You didn't hear about Raleigh came.
And here he is.
Two points difference right at this moment.
With Eric Holder.
Oh, one point.
Hey, it's a toss up now.
The writing time front cannot be erased.
Am I right?
You're right.
Well, Mark could be right.
Needs to get the take down here if he wants to reset it.
Voelker of Iowa State against Cain of Iowa.
Volker again in on that.
Powerful double that he has.
But it's on the edge of the mark.
They are you know they are here.
51 seconds to go.
It's eight to seven.
Okay.
He has writing.
Time single leg lost and got he's got the leg.
He has the leg now it's whether or not he can stay which he did with the okay.
Just rolled through and it's now ten to seven.
You know what's interesting I mentioned it earlier to you both coaches feel confident going into the final match if it came down to heavyweight we ask pressing question to both coach and they said we feel good enough for a heavy group well Eric Holder let's just call for stalling on top with 25 seconds to go and that penalty.
Point makes it ten to eight Volcker leads.
But he does have writing time now for sure so it's really a three point lead.
Well if he got out he could take down all time June and there's a takedown and then now and it's 12 nine with 9 seconds to go but now.
This is going to tie the match and we're going to go to heavyweight my friend our don't go weigh in on him I'm not gonna.
11 too often go back down and right at the end with the white flag flying and that makes it with right on time 1015 to ten on writing time for Welker and here we go at heavyweight as we have so many times between Iowa and Iowa State it's time to end the calls from Iowa State and mark number of highlights this one it's all about oh they got everybody on their feet here let's stay in that dog I think we're we're the only ones not on our feet the.
Hawkeyes have never lost here at Carver Hawkeye Arena and they won't unless they lose this one and similar against Andy Cole simply to look awfully good against Erickson even though he lost he took Erickson down the best heavyweight in the country twice in the last period.
All right.
We have a couple of different styles here.
In the year you don't want to go toe to toe with.
He's strong going straight forward and backwards.
He's got good hip action he's he's just a real good heavyweight.
But just so what I was going to say about Andy Cook, he creates he angles, he goes to the side, he has his arm drag and hits the single it's different.
He wants to create that.
Oh, all right.
Why?
He simply you're almost locked up in that lock up in a bear hug.
And he's aggressive.
Well, he what you say is true hope.
If he's to score, has to go to the corners as they say.
Right.
He has to get away from settling his charge and move to the outside.
Well, you know, I felt like he had a chance came off the ball the other night.
Football team for three years at their center of what a good center he was.
Locked up for a second and then decided he didn't want to be there.
It's a time where.
This is for the marbles.
Senior and black for Iowa against Andy Cole for the Iowa State can't just be pushing go let's go a minute gone they're saying here's the push and he's got to have that offense I'm looking at cap eagles straight across crosses right.
My line of business he's about ready to fall out of chair well.
Iowa State has won.
Five matches.
Iowa has won four.
But one of those four was a fall when I wasn't talking about oh, it's good bye by Elizabeth Smart Salinger's There's Dad you're there to cut down with a spin around.
Let's go, let's go.
And it's quarter nothing Iowa nice hand.
Control by.
Any coach to get out of there he did a nice job of getting up control in the hand ever watching.
Kevin Salinger Mark our mark I can certainly say Kevin but Mark Salinger.
Tipping off is good is back in high school Charles City that is a state champion you'll see the news get them all let's go Marshall here is next week we bring you the Iowa State High School Wrestling Championships.
But tonight here we go with about 40 seconds to go in the first period let's go guys.
Let's go.
Coach has not been able to avoid the similar charge.
Oh no.
He's got to step aside.
He doesn't want to go straight on Kofi's quick and his two to.
One said they are going to take down on the spin around copperhead one really good shot over in the side and sending her.
Countered it now coach locks up across the back thinks better of it and backs away We're usually when you come down to a heavyweight match you kind of have in your mind somebody that you think's going to win you said usually that's not this even why not here.
Not here no this is it's down that's the end goal with 195 national champion last year he.
Finished second three times in a row and then finally won the title and one of the best 190 pounders in the country now an international team member at one 90.
Eight colt starts on top settle here on the bottom we'll talk about hand controls the year get in there and he's out there one and here we go again on the feet settling our driving hard coach has not been able to counter it yet particularly well similar keeps him from going outside 15 on a stylistic note we play in the end zone to play in the air block he got a running back in back to the center you're looking at Andy Kopel the Iowa state whose team at one time left well to six blocks left six to nothing they won the first two match at summit and Kelly Hendrick and Mitch Kelly one man for Iowa Reagor and Carter one for Iowa State, then four in a row for Iowa.
Steve Metzger and.
Rice Alger and Jim Morelli, but Chipper.
Ellis was the ball and that's the difference.
And then Eric Voelker won for Iowa State.
And here we are in heavyweight Ronnie Red.
Here's a warning against red coat I'm going to be stepping in and trailing three to one.
He doesn't need that.
Oh, we win.
There is no 00.
We have 40 seconds to go in the second period and settling our leads three to one.
He has the only takedown.
Black.
You can't be black with your hand.
40 to 15 seconds to go second graders a warning against him to with his head blocking off one by going one point and there's a point here makes it for two up and now it's a three point lead.
Well but honestly I don't see the call there I felt that neither one of them was doing anything I that it's questionable given just going over to the referee warns the guy got back got Iowa New York Iowa was born at the same time that I've come down to heavyweight here if this lead for settling or holds status in life I think that's basically double warning up there I'll about one more there is there's a time where there there is a warning taking against the Iowa State coach you're like this one shot one shot this one quarter one.
I would say if this were to hold up the record of would remain of the top four teams Iowa Iowa State Oklahoma State and Penn State all winning when they're at home.
And you know the neat thing about it is Maryland isn't home to anyone and that's where the NCAA is.
And so there's really no home advantage you might say.
Well, the Eastern School, Penn State won the advantage.
No way.
Not in Maryland.
It's a hit.
This whole thing's up for grabs this year.
Both had the shot, didn't get it.
It's more to do with a minute and a half left to go.
At 30 oh, coach of Iowa State in the red.
He trails by two and his team is tied at 15 all and heavyweight.
Let's go this no 00 and they threw but outside they were all out of bounds and that happened a minute and 4 seconds to go riding time is not a factor You have got to be out you don't be blocking off.
It is 422 in favor of Sennelier.
If he wins his team.
Wins in what he for 14,750 feet hope Friday's shot didn't really reach it Now we have 40 seconds to go Sennelier maintain his position In effect he comes close to the wall.
30 seconds.
30 seconds 30 periscope and cylinder counters have at least six to two.
Oh and at six to three after the escape.
But there are only 5 seconds to go and send them a whimsical and the winning streak stays alive.
The Kabir Hawkeye's screen goes to 40 as the Hawkeyes come back and defeat Iowa State.
18 the 15 and I'll tell you the difference, as many people thought it might be, when the extra points scored at £177 when we go check the rally and look at him Steve Metzger.
5 minutes and 28 seconds.
Screen women helped each team won five matches but one of them for Iowa.
Was a fall Well, that's something, isn't it?
Iowa State 15 Iowa 18 people are 14,750 people.
Here's what happened to the winners for Iowa where Penrith and Mitch Kelly at one 34 and 42 Alger at one 67 he beat Kevin Jackson again Jeff Morelli on a fall at 77 and certainly here beat Andy Cohen at heavyweight that was the winner.
And for Iowa State they started out the way they wanted to.
They had some of the no Kelly win at the first two weeks They got two wins squeaker over Heffernan again at 50 and Carter at 58 and for Bowker at 90 but it was not enough.
Well I think that the one thing that came through here tonight was Iowa was able to keep their string alive and the home teams were able to keep that string alive of home team victories.
But as far as what.
This does for the NCAA picture, I talked to you about it beforehand.
I don't think.
It decides anything.
A lot of both teams will be there in the end.
And in Maryland, you're going to see either one of these teams win in the national championship, quite possibly.
Well, we've come to the end of another college wrestling season here on Iowa Public Television with a big Iowa Iowa state.

It was a big one when Tim Johnson, he said if anybody won the first two matches, they might go away with.
It didn't work.
It didn't work that way.
But it was a really an exciting made.
Tell you the enthusiasm in this crowd got me all pumped up and we really had a good time here tonight.
While you were saying, you know, too, that this doesn't decide a thing for the NCAA.
No, I really don't think it does as far as the doomy finale here.
It just decides that the home crowd made a big difference.
Along the four teams that are at the top of the list this year.
Iowa, Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Penn State, none of them lost against each other at home.
It was a really, really neat season in the fact that there was no dominant one team this year like in the past several years by a.
