Newark council member pleads guilty to bribery charges

A Newark city council member has pleaded guilty to conspiring with an associate to shake down companies, take bribes and kickbacks from contracting companies seeking development and construction projects in the city. Joseph McCallum Jr. admitted to participating in a scheme that included a $16,000 bribe from a contracting company and a $25,000 bribe and kickback from a developer’s company.
