- Oh, hi!
You know, Sparky here.
He just had this really good plan.
He's helping me with my addition and my subtraction because it's something I still struggle with.
And you know, Sparky, he's really helpful around the house.
He's always got all these ideas.
And so he had this great idea where we have locks that have answers on them.
Here, I'll show you my lock up close.
That one says two on it.
- Ooh, cool, two.
- This one says one.
And then what Sparky did is he's got this bowl here and then there's different keys.
And each key in the bowl has like a different problem on it.
So for example, this one here, it says, 4 - 2 =, right?
So I go 4 - 2... Do you know what that is, Wimee?
4 - 2.
- Yeah, 4 - 2 is 2.
- 2, okay, so I take the lock that says 2 and then I put the key in it.

- 3, all right, Brody, let's try 3.
All right, let's see, 3... 3... You're right, it opened up!
And it was pretty fun, I always like locks and keys.
I think they're kind of fun and fascinating.
And this is just kind of a fun way to learn.
But you know, we got some other examples of things you can do because you don't have to just use the same thing.
You can reuse the locks all the time.
This one Sparky was helping me out with letter sounds so, he had little pictures then on the card.
So then we'd say, okay, well, what letter does that start with, right?
So we had our letter sounds.
He did one for coins where there's a penny and a nickel and a dime and a quarter so I was learning like what the value of each coin is.
And then we did another one just to match letters so we would have lowercase and uppercase letters.
But really, anything that you wanna learn.
You could do rhyming sounds or really, it's up to your imagination, colors, shapes, all kinds of things.
And it's fun to do it with the lock.
And then if you're right, whoo!
Lock opens up, it's pretty cool.
- That is an awesome idea!
- Yeah, it was a good one, Sparky.
I'm telling you!
He doesn't get enough credit.
He's such a hard worker.
He's very clever, he's always got these great ideas.
So that was a good one, Sparky, nice job.
And I appreciate the help.
He's always helpin' out.
- Well, Jim, Sparky, thank you so much for today!
- We'll see you later!

It's time for today's "Check Out This Book".
(upbeat music) - Hi, I'm Ms. Basya with the Los Angeles Public Library and for today's key theme, I've got Peggy Rathmann's "Good Night Gorilla", published by GP Putnam's Sons.
This is an oldie, but a goodie.
I love it.
It's a classic bedtime story about a zookeeper with his zoo, a gorilla, and a colorful set of keys.
Well, it's bedtime at the zoo.
And the zookeeper's job is to make sure that all the animals are safe and sound for the night.
He quietly tiptoes to each of the animal's cages with his flashlight and says goodnight to them.
The zookeeper starts with the gorilla in the red cage, making sure he's all right and then tiptoes on to the next animal.
But what the zookeeper doesn't know is is that when he passed by the gorilla's cage, the gorilla slipped off his keyring from his belt.
The keyring is a special circular ring that holds lots of keys all at once, and the zookeeper's keys opens all the cages in the zoo.
Each cage is a different color with a matching key.
So a green key unlocks and opens the green cage.
Now that the gorilla has all the keys, he can open all the cages of the zoo of all the other animals and guess what?
He does!
Read along as the gorilla with the keys, and a growing parade of animals, quietly escape their cages and gently follow their beloved zookeeper.
Watch as the zookeeper says goodnight and then walks to his own house for his own bedtime but he has no idea what's going on behind him.
(chuckles) How will all the animals get to sleep if they're out of their cages?
Will the zookeeper ever notice all the mischief that the gorilla has gotten everyone into?
Will he get his keys back?
Check out this adorably funny book from your local library to find out.
(upbeat music) - (laughs) I love the thought of an animal parade.
