Kounte was a senior at Auburn High School whose character is defined by both academic excellence and extraordinary courage.
Not only did he receive an Alabama high school diploma with advanced academic endorsement, he also received an international baccalaureate diploma and a testament to his intellectual curiosity and drive.
- He is easy to work with.
He is very courteous in class.
He is equally contributable when it comes to classroom discussion.
He has a wide friendship group.
He's actively involved in our campus, and Kounte seeks greatness in his academics.
- While Kounte's academic achievements are impressive, his act of selfless bravery in 2020 sets him apart.
At age 13, Kounte ran through flames to save his family when a fire broke out in their home.
- On the night of the fire, the dryer in the hallway had been engulfed by the flames so I had to maneuver around it in order to reach my siblings who were sleeping at the time.
I grabbed them and I went to my room in order to open the door so that I can drop them off outside.
But I had to go back inside the house in order to get my youngest brother who was still sleeping at the crib at the time, grab him, and then leave the house by the window.
I don't ever wanna like coerce them to think that I saved them and they owe me, 'cause that's not what being a young hero is about, it's about acting when it's appropriate.
- [Narrator] Kounte Threadgill is an exceptional young man who's dedicated to academics, commitment to his community, and extraordinary active heroism make him truly a deserving candidate as a 2025 Alabama Public Television Young Hero.
