Hi everyone.
I'm James Fox Smith joining you for the stories from the porch.
A part of our PBS's mission is to preserve the French language and culture in Louisiana.
And one great way that LP is doing exactly that is through the partnership and collaboration with Televisa M to produce La VA, the first Louisiana French news magazine broadcast statewide in 30 years.
Now, thanks to LP, new audiences are discovering the French language and LA VA is a big reason why you'll meet the producers in a few minutes.
But before we do that, there's one event that happens each year that is quintessentially Louisiana, and that's that career, the Mardi Gras and the love.
A team was there this year to capture it all.
So let's see what unfolded.

Hello everyone I'm James Fox Smith and thank you for joining us for love stories from the porch.
This is a special presentation of three episodes of Le VA, the weekly French newsmagazine produced by Taylor, Louisiana, with help.
It's the first TV program produced entirely in Louisiana French and aired throughout the state in 30 years.
Past members support made this possible, and with your support right now, you can help us to share more stories like this and preserve the French language and culture that makes Louisiana well, Louisiana.
So call us or text.
Give to eight, eight, eight, seven, six, nine, 5000.
Make your pledge online or scan the QR code on your screen.
With me now are Will macro managing editor, Drake LeBlanc, creative director and Caitlin Sharon, who's produce and writer on the show.
Welcome you all to the show today.
Well tell us, how did Lafayette come about?
So love is started, I guess, about a year and a half ago.
We're on our second season, and the first season was last year, and we had been wanting to do some French programing on LP since it's the statewide public broadcaster.
And so we met with the production team here.
We workshop the three different ideas and then we were able to go to the legislature to to get some funding to make the show a reality.
And so now we're in our second season and we hope to continue for a few more seasons with with your support.
Outstanding drag.
That's a really fun way to introduce French on television in Louisiana.
Talk a little bit about that.
Yeah, I mean, like like you mentioned earlier, you know, we haven't had much representation as far as French language and media in the state, and that was widely accessible by the people in our state.
So, you know, for the first time in 30 years, I think it's something for the kids and inspires them to continue preserving their language and our culture and show them that there's real opportunities, that people want to embrace that and support it.
So we're happy to be doing it.
Yeah, and there's a community that's still where that language is very vibrant.
Caitlin Talk to me a little bit about what the response has been like.
What's that?
It's been overwhelmingly positive from, from what we can see.
I wouldn't have expected that, you know, kind of a niche program that's in a foreign language for most of the people in Louisiana would perform so well.
But everyone seems to be really enjoying it.
We get, you know, kind of stopped on the street.
Sometimes when we're out on shoots, people are recognizing and appreciating the program and their response is coming from all over the state.
Okay.
That's fantastic to hear.
Well, we've got some challenges here to come today, which will give you the read the viewers the opportunity to support programing like this on LP and his drag.
To tell us a little bit about the first of those is Sue.
Bernie is proud to support the programing on LWB and is challenging all viewers to donate right now and she will match dollar for dollar the first $5,000 called in during this program.
And this program only in effect.
This will make your donation worth twice as much to LWB.
And we'll have out those thank you gifts because there's some really generous gifts for everybody who joins the program.
Yes.
So we have some great Merci beaucoup.
Thank you.
Gifts from Latvia and the French program on LP.

Caitlin I think that we've also got a special credit card offer tonight to take advantage of.
We do absolutely.
For the first pledge of $500 or more on a credit card, you'll receive a handmade and a cultural signed print titled Palm Canopy from a limited edition of 45.
The print is a two color hand-poured screenprint printed on toned printmaking paper with 21 by 28 dimensions.
That's super cool.
Those are the opportunities that are there for everybody who chooses to support ELP during the program tonight, and we hope you'll take advantage of that opportunity.
Now, guys, we've just had a look at the episode about Career Day, Mardi Gras, and tell us give us a little inside scoop.
What was it like filming that particular episode?
I mean, career the Mardi Gras is something that's very traditional, and I think it really shows the essence of how a tradition that is that old that has been practiced for generations and generations and well over 100 years can manifest and grow in new ways that incorporates the newer and upcoming generations and even newer practices in the career of the Mardi Gras, but still pay homage to some of those older traditions that, you know, we love to support and highlight in our Louisiana culture.
So it was a lot of fun to film and we've all been going to like our own version of Mardi Gras, as you know, as a native Louisiana.
And so it was cool to incorporate it into our day to day work.
Guys is an amazing well, thank you all for your calls during the program today and thank you to telling Louisiana for the part that they're playing in this wonderful production.
Support the programs you love on loop and choose from these thank you gifts that celebrate Louisiana's French language and culture.

Hello.
Welcome back.
I'm James Fox Smith, publisher of Country Roads magazine and your host for Love Stories from the Porch.
You just heard about some of the thank you gifts that can be yours when you become a member to support your public television network.
It's your way to thank help for this truly unique programing and your chance to cast your vote for more.
So call us or text give to 888769 5000.
You can pledge online or scan the QR code on your screen with your smart device.
But now let's hear again from our friends at Taylor, Louisiana, who produce love and are helping new audiences to embrace French Louisiana.
Well, Drake Caitlyn, welcome back.
Well, my goal with this today is executive producer and managing editor of the show.
Caitlyn Osborne is a producer and writer.
And Drake LeBlanc is Love, a host and creative director.
Drake Part of his mission is to support the preservation of French in Louisiana.
This makes this partnership absolute kismet, right?
Yeah, definitely.
I feel like the partnership between LBB and Television Louisiana was destined to be something that we as a team had in our sights and our vision board for a long time.
You know, early on since we started the company.
And we just kept on building the resources in the media and the libraries that we wanted until it made sense to join US forces together.
So yeah.
Well, tell us, like how many dialects of French are there actually spoken in Louisiana today?
Definitely.
I mean, it's hard to desegregate because there is such a wide variety.
But that's one of the things that's so interesting about our show is that we try to go out and feature as many of the different communities.
And so we see a lot of different dialects, variations both in Louisiana, French and also within Louisiana Creole.
And, you know, it comes up all the time where, you know, whether it's to the accent, for example, in the food parish where where Caitlin's from, they have this aspirated j thing where instead of saying Marjan, they say more ham.
And then, you know, that doesn't exist in the rest of Louisiana or it's something like a vocabulary difference.
Like we talk about that in the Troy Landry episode where, you know, in Southwest Louisiana for Alligator, they tend to say, but then in southeast Louisiana, they tend to say go more.
And there's so many other things like that.
And so we're becoming kind of experts in those in a French in Louisiana, Creole.
But we still at least a few words every every episode.
Caitlin, why do you think if you can put into a few words, why is a program like La VA so important in Louisiana today coming to telling Louisiana from the classroom, from a French immersion classroom?
My main focus was to not only provide educational resource support for teachers and students, kind of giving them something, something else besides just a written textbook or any, you know, sort of videos that they might find on the Internet, giving them something that represents more of the Louisiana dialect and the Louisiana culture, as well as demonstrating to those students, particularly in these immersion programs, what sorts of things they can do with their language, that there there is an economy for French speakers out here, even if for now it's just us.
Yeah, it's not just something you learn in the classroom.
It's something that lives in their community and in the state as well, Right?
Well, let's talk about some of these gifts that we've got for the folks who are watching today.
We've got a number of challenges, don't we, Drake, for for viewers to consider today.
Yes, some ASU Bernie is proud to support the programing on LPD and is challenging all viewers to donate right now.
And she will match dollar for dollar the first $5,000 called in during this program.
Only, in effect, this will make your donation worth twice as much to help.
That's a really that's a tremendously generous gift.
Well, there's some other gifts, too, out there that folks would get.
Tell us about that.
Definitely.
We've got some great gifts to say.
Massimo, too, for $144 or $12 a month, you can get the lovely combo, which is the Louisiana Garden flag and a Korean flag Koozie a pair of Louisiana tea towels and a Katy and a mug and then a messy LP T-shirt.
And then for $120 or $10 a month, you'll get that pair of love Louisiana tea towels.
And then finally, for $72 or $6 a month, you'll receive the Mercy Lpx T-shirts.
And in addition to this, everyone will get visions of Beebe's monthly program guide, as well as a popular member member benefit LP Passport.
And there's that.
There's a credit card offer, too, isn't there, Caitlin, for people to take advantage of?
Yes, absolutely.
For the first pledge of $500 or more on a credit card, you'll receive an original and a cultural signed print titled Palm Canopy from a limited edition of 45.
The print is a two color hand-poured screenprint printed on toned printing paper and with dimensions of 21 by 28. well, that's really cool stuff.
And we hope that everybody who's viewing tonight will take advantage not only of the opportunity to support our baby, but also to pick up those fabulous thank you gifts as well.
And thanks to everybody for your support of Louisiana French on LP.
Thanks to everyone who has helped us pull together these wonderful thank you gifts for the show and also especially to Parrish ink for their support of these gifts that are available as part of this production.
So now let's go back to see the rest of Taylor Louisiana programing.
Support the programs you love on LP and choose from these thank you gifts that celebrate Louisiana's French language and culture.

Hello once again from the LP studios during this special presentation of Love Stories from the Porch, I'm your host, James Fox Smith, publisher of Country Roads Magazine.
You can probably tell that I'm not from Louisiana, but is sharing stories like this that make me so proud to call myself a Louisianan after so many years here?
And aren't we all lucky that we have help to tell Louisiana's evolving story?
You make this possible through your membership, and if you're not yet a member, join us to support the programs you love.
Right now, let's continue our conversation with Will Drake and Katelyn, the talented team that brings us the first Louisiana French program to air statewide in over 30 years.
Will managing editor executive producer tell us the experience of working with Troy Landry?
That was a big episode of La VA, wasn't it?
Talk to us a little bit about working with a real, like, bona fide minted star was like, Definitely, yeah, that was the finale of our first half of the second season.
And, you know, we're all so proud of him.
We were all fans of him before because, you know, he's really put Louisiana culture on the map, especially French culture, Cajun culture.
And he showed that it's possible to really make a living and create opportunities through sharing our culture with the world.
And so it was really an honor.
Meet him.
He was so nice.
He was so friendly.
Derek, I think I'm going to go squirrel hunting with him and and a couple blocks, ideally.
And what was so great is that he really spoke perfect Louisiana French.
And for us, you know, he's a huge symbol of Louisiana culture but also he represents something bigger of how there are so many people like him that are relatively young and that still speak French perfectly.
And it was their first language.
And that just shows that the work we're doing is not just about preserving the past, but it's keeping alive this existing it and living in material cultural heritage.
Yeah, that's super cool.
Okay, so guys, we're seeing three episodes here today.
That'll be a lot of people's introduction to it, but there are a lot more episodes than that, aren't there?
Troy, Tell us, like, give us an idea, what's one of your favorites that people are maybe not seeing today?
Well, one of my favorite episodes is definitely the episode that we're doing on Footwork, which is a documentary about black and Creole cowboys in Louisiana that we just finished producing.
And I think that's something that a lot of people haven't saw or have been exposed to in Louisiana.
And that's one of my favorite parts about Lafayette.
And our partnership with APB is that we get to show people in Louisiana.
But also people outside of Louisiana, these staple parts of our culture that don't often get the exposure that they deserve.
So I'm really excited for people to see that episode and get their feedback.
I can't wait to see that episode.
Caitlin How about you?
What really jumps out?
As a research parish native?
I would have to say that the butchery episode that we shot down in my hometown of Golden Meadow was absolutely my favorite.
I, you know, I just feel like Louisiana cuisine is so indicative of our culture and it was really a special thing.
Be able to go down to my hometown, to a butchery that I've been to throughout my life and be able to showcase that not only to the whole state, but in our in our native French language.
And to tell the whole story, like let everybody see what they miss.
And then factory.
Well, look this is obviously we have the programing and that's gift enough but everybody who chooses to support the program tonight gets a little something else done.
We there's a challenge, isn't there, that we have to tell people about.
Yes.
The issue, Bernie is proud to support the programing on LPI and is challenging all of us to donate right now.
And she will match dollar for dollar the first $5,000 called in during this program and this program only, in effect, this will make a donation worth twice as much to LBB.
That's fantastic.
Super generous.
Well, how about those thank you gifts?
The gifts are pretty cool.
Like I say, broken gifts for $144 or $12 a month.
You can get the love combo, which is the Louisiana Garden Flag and Acadian Flag.
Koozie a pair of Louisiana tea towels, an Acadian mug, and then a male C ltb T-shirt.
And then for $120 or $10 a month, you'll get that pair of love Louisiana tea towels.
And then finally, for $72 or $6 a month, you'll receive the Mercy LP t shirts and all others will come with Visions LP B's Program Guide, as well as the LP Passport, which is the streaming platform.
Super Cool.
And there's a credit card off for Caitlin too, that people need to know to take advantage of, right?
Absolutely.
For the first pledge of $500 or more on a credit card, you'll receive an original and a cultural fine print titled Palm Canopy from a limited edition of 45.
The print is a two color hand-pulled screenprint printed on toned printmaking paper with dimensions of 21 by 28 inches.
That's amazing.
LPT is a frequent collaborator with Codicil as well, so you can look forward to lots more programing exploring French in Louisiana coming up on LP day.
Caitlin There's another exciting new project, isn't there, that's been waiting in the wings.
You want to tell us a little bit about that?
Yes, we had the opportunity to work with TV Sync recently on a live globally broadcast event, 100% in French.
We had some of our All-Stars from the past seasons of Love of Year.
Come on and sit on the panel with us.
And that was broadcasted in December globally through TV sync and is now available on all of their streaming platforms.
So that's on TV Thanks programs, broadcast network all around the world.
It was here about TV studios.

Exciting partnership.
So what a what an opportunity to be a part of this Louisiana bringing Louisiana French to the world.
